FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK CONVENTION ISSUE Time is rapidly approaching for the publication of our convention issue. We could still use some additional material for that issue. Contributors should try to have their copy in no later than June Gth. Thank you. • • If you have a notion that life insurance is strictly for males, a lot of people who call themselves Miss, Mrs. or Ms. could prove that you are wrong. True, the typical buyer of life insurance is masculine. But last year three out of every 10 new "ordinary" policies were bought to insure women. These are policies bought through a life insurance agent. As a group, though, women did buy proportionately less life insurance than men — 14 per cent female, compared with 86 per cent male — but that mainly reflects the role of men as principal bread-winners in their families. One thing that may come as a surprise is that a sizable number of pollcies were bought for youngsters under the age of 15; something like 10 per cent of new policies were issued to boys and girls in the age range. What motivates these purchases? Many parents, following the example set by their own fathers and mothers, apparently feel that it makes sense to start a person's

HERITAGE There's never a rose in all the world But makes some green spray sweeter; There's never a wind in all the sky But makes some bird's wing fleeter; There's never a star but brings to heav'n Some silv'ry radiance tender; There's never a cloud that inurks the sky But crowns the sunset splendor. There's never a robin but thrills some heart, His dawnlike gladness voicing — Nature gives us all some small, sweet way To set the world rejoicing. There's nothing like our Heritage, That stays with us in our daily stride Let us cherish it forever, For it is the basic ingredient. of our pride. life insurance program at a youthful age, when annual premiums are at their lowest, and it is perhaps easier to establish good thrift habits. What comes as no surprise, however, is that the bulk of policies were acquired by people who fall into the young-family age range. By the same token, most of the policies were bought LIST OF DELEGATES IN THIS ISSUE

by individuals with incomes ranging from $5,000 through $15,000. Nevertheless, 12 percent of the policies purchased last year went to persons whose incomes were less than $5,000. If you were asked what size policy people bought last year, and you thought $10,000 or more you'd be pretty close to the mark at least half the time. Life insurance can be bought in all denominations, but in 1971, 50 per cent of the new policies were for $10,000 and over. About 20 per cent were between $5,000 and $10,000, and 29 per cent below $5,000. Of course, in many instances these were policies being added to insurance already owned by the family. • • Every sweet has its sour; every evil has its good. Every faculty which receives pleasure has a penalty put on its abuse. It is to answer for its moderation with its life. For every grain of wit there is a grain of folly. For everything you have missed, you have gained something' else; and for everything you gain, you lose something. If riches increase, they are increased that use them. If the gatherer gathers too much, nature takes out of the man what she puts into his chest; swells the estate, but kills the owner. Nature hates monopolies and exceptions. The waves of the sea do not more speedily
