FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK All members of Districts II and VI should take note of their district meetings on this Sunday, April 16th — District II at Cyclone Lodge No. 24, and District VI at the new Lodge No. 40, Hillje hr u in Hillje. These are important -- meetings especially now just prior to the convention.

• • Once again you will have an opportunity to witness an enjoyable Czech operetta; a production entitled "Babicka z Moravy" or "Grandmother from Moravia," on Sunday, April 16 at Lodge No. 88 in the Chandelier Ballroom, 1435 Beall, Houston, beginning at 2 p.m. ReMember, all of you readers, it is airconditioned for your comfort. What more could you ask? This presentation will be, performed by the Hlahol Dramatic Club of Lodge 88. It is a production filled with many beautiful songs and dances which all will enjoy, and all the performers, who are taking part, have had many years of stage experience, thereby assuring you of a promising outstanding entertainment, to the fullest.

The story of the operetta deals with the everyday lives of the Moravian people and their quaint customs and a plot for a play filled with the laughter and tears. Yours truly wishes to emphasize the impressive story of the Hlahol Dramatic Club. This club is well-known throughout the State of

Texas as well as out of state — not only among Czech people of all the SPJST lodges, but also the American public who has attended they many productions staged by this organization. The name "Hlahol" is a Czech Word meaning "beautiful sound." This club is the largest in the SPJST fraternal Society and is one of the oldest dramatic clubs in continuous performances in the City of Houston, and indeed, the State of Texas — now in its 53rd year — having been organized in June of 1919 by Jindra Grossmann, a Czech immigrant who was the founder

of the "Hlahol Dramatic Club," and who wanted to introduce some of the old Czech culture into the American way of life and thus help preserve the traditions of the homeland and perpetuate the Czech language. Their present director is Brother Tim Kostom who has performed in over 100 plays; he also takes great pride and interest in the make-up and costumes of the male actors whether he directs or just performs in a production on a large or small scale.

The club' is well organized. Every director and his assistants are responsible for selecting a suitable play for each occasion, selecting the proper cast and directing the play. This club has produced over 300 productions to date. It has sponsored musicals and programs for special occasions during these years to the delight of its patrons, not only in the Czech language, but also in the English language. Most of the actors are real troupers in spite of being busy with their daily tasks.

Hlahol Dramatic Club has traveled throughout the state and performed in every city and community where people of Czech origin predominate.

The club has its own library of several hundred Czech plays (dramas, comedies and operettas) originally printed in Czech and 'bared on scenes or incidents in Czech history. The wardrobes are well stocked and kept

This club also owns its own scenery made by the renowned artist, Brother Frank Dvorak (88) — an accomplished actor and singer himself.

This famous dramatic club is composed of volunteer amateurs, who willingly sacrifice their time and talents to entertain members and friends through music, dance and drama. Today we are proud of their participants on the stage, not only in the second generation of some of our charactermembers enjoying this work, but the third generation as well. ' Since this dramatic club is the only surviving club in Texas, let's pilserve its culture, and to those of yal. who do not have 'a commitment pending on that particular day, try and make an extra effort to attend this 3-act production. (In this issue refer to its pertinent information in the Czech and English languages).

We are certain that the actors will be rewarded by your presence and inspiration. We salute the /timbers of the "Hlahol Dramatic Club" for their continuance in the Czech culture.

• • Wouldn't it be nice if we could find other things as easy as we find fault.

Not long ago, a man took stock of himself. For years he had awakened in the morning feeling none too good. He was quite likely to be displeased that it was time to rise. He would frown because the children were noisy and full of life. He never had much to say to his wife until he had eaten his breakifast in silence.

Then he began to notice that his days were colored by that first hour.

If that was the case — and he believed that it was — the logical thing was to change the character of the first hour of the day. He thought he would try out that plan.

He made out a definite program.

When he first awakened, he would enumerate all the good things that had . occurred the day before. Then he would think Of the care of the night, and • the opportunities of the day which awaited him. He would think of himself as oager to do a good turn for someone.

He would start right then to determine to be good-natured the first hour of the day. He would try to make it pleasant for someone. It might be to write a note, just a cheerful line or two, to some lonesome soul.

So, the morning of the first day of the new program he went downstairs

Wednesday, April 12, 1972 and remarked cheerfully, "My, but that coffee smells good! There's all the difference in the world in coffee, and, Jane, you've certainly got the knack of making it."

To the man's surprise, the days became more interesting, his associates became more considerate and friendly, and his business grew surprisingly, even in the face of difficulties. Everafter, the man saw to it that his first hour of the day was spent worthily, and he found it easy to spend the hours that followed in the same spirit.

A dime held close enough to the eye 'will shut out the whole world. The small duty close at hand may shut out all vision, all ideals. The small duty is always with us. There are always things to be done. In order to achieve the greatest which is within each of us, we must balance between small duties which could never be completely done — had we ten times our present time and strength — and the distant ideals. We must be able to say to the hrimediate and small, "Stand back!

That is your place! This is the time for rest, for margin, for assimilation, for growth."

Sister Karolina (Carrie) Vanduch, age 84, passed away April 3, 1972 in a Waxahachie hospital. Interment was in Tobola Cemetery near Penelope and she was a member Of Lodge Penelope No. 167. Aderhold Funeral Home of West was in charge of arrangements.

Features JUREN RETIRES AS ELLINGER POST MASTER ... BUT HE WON'T BE IDLE D. A. Juren, who became postmaster at Ellinger on October 27, 1941, when the office was in the fourth class, retired the last day Of March after having served more than 30 years.

The Ellinger office was advanced to third class status from 1945 to 1949, and again in 1956-57, and Mrs. Juren, who was his assistant, was appointed clerk. William F. Jurajda was appointed clerk in 1968, when the office was

vtSTNIK again delegated to the third class.

The post office was moved to a new building — and its present location — in 1965, the structure being owned by Mr. and Mrs. Juren, In 1966 the Jurens received President Lyndon B. Johnson's "Natural Beauty Program Citation of Merit" with a rating of superior for maintaining the grounds and exterior of the postal unit "in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the community and the Post Office Department." Ellinger's was the only fourth class post office to receive this merit award in the Dallas region, which has 2,200 post offices under its jurisdiction. A "Continuation of Excellence" award was issued in 1968 to the Jurens.

Mr. Jurajda, who has been the clerk for over three years, has been appointed as officer-in-charge and Mrs. Juren, who has served in the office over 27 years was appointed as his replacement.

Mr. Juren said ha will continue with his tax accounting service, his notary work, and will operate his barber shop on a three-day-a-week basis. He will also devote required time to duties to the other offices he holds: secretarytreasurer of the Effinger Sewer and Water Supply Corporation, secretarytreasurer and financial secretary of SPJST Lodge No. 51, secretary of the Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department, president of the Area Brethren Church parish board comprised of Nelsonville, Fayetteville, Wesley and Industry, president of the Fayetteville Brethren church's board of elders, president of the Mutual Aid Society and president of the Fayetteville Brethren Church's cemetery committee.

On any remaining "idle days" of the week, he plans to go fishing and try for that big one which usually always gets away..

(From the Fayette County Record) Cadet Herman Robert Yezak, Jr.,a yearling (soph.) at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York was home for the Easter holidays. Robert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Yezak of Bremond. Mrs. YeZak is also a member of Lodge 66, Waco. Robert's late grandfather, Thomas F. Supak, was a member of SPJST for nearly half a century.

Cadet Yezak is the first Robertson County young man in recent times to receive an appointment to West Point.

He was nominated to the USMA in

WEST POINT CADET ROBERT YEZAK the spring of 1970 by Con gressman W. Poage of Waco.

A 1970 honor graduate, of Bremond High School, Robert was also an outstanding athlete in school athletics as well as CYO sports. He participated in. numerous school and church activities and won a speech contest which entitled him to a two weeks tour of the nation's capital in June of 1970 sponsored by the Texas Rural Electric Cooperatives.

Robert is a member of Army's varsity baseball team. He is a catcher. Another Yezak son, George, is a second baseman on the Texas A (3,-, M freshman baseball team. An eider daughter, Patt, will graduate from the University of Dallas May 21st. Daughter Jennifer is a fifth grader in Bremond.

April 5, 1972 To all Delegates to the XX.I SPJST Convention and Brothers and Sisters from District IV: After giving the matter a great deal of thought and consideration, I would like to become your Supreme Lodge Director of District IV., I have been interested in our SPJST for a long time as I've been associated with it all my life. I became a member of Lodge No. 160 in San Angelo in 1943.

I am married to the former Martha Bubenik and have 3 children, Gary, 16; Debra, 13 and Carl, 9. I am the

son of Mrs. Lillie Broz and the late SPJST Director R. E. (Bob) Bros. I have held various offices in community, church and Veteran organizations. Presently, I am Commander of Rowena Post 9196, VFW and on the Concho County ASC Committee. I have been engaged in stock farming for the past 25 years, and have lived in the I,owake Community in Conch° County for the past 13 years. I am a member of the Catholic Church.

I feel that I am capable of handling the position of. Director of District IV. I can assure you that if I am elected to the position, I will devote the necessary time and attention to these duties.

I have been interested in our SPJST since I became a member several years ago. My wife, Thelma, and our four children, are members also. I am serving my second term as president of Lodge No. 117, my fourth year as „a di-

rector on the Board of (he S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, and assistant youth leader and bus driver for our local youth club.

I have been farming in the Robstown area for twenty years and have made several real estate transactions in this community. I am eager and willing to learn whatever is necessary to help me fulfill my duties as a director should you desire to elect me to the position.

I am an elder in the Presbyterian church and feel that my respect for honesty, dependability, and concern for other people's needs qualify me for the position of director of District VII. LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members, Our last meeting was held on March 30th, at 7:30 p.m. with President Dan Balusek presiding. Flag Bearers Donald Pechal and Ralph Kohutek led in the pledge of allegiance.

All officers were present and the March 5th minutes read by Sister Ruby Bolton were approved as read.

A visitor at this meeting was Brother Lad Zatopek, District II Organizer, Who spoke briefly about the lodge organizers who sold the most insurance and most members secured, making our Lodge No. 1 in the district. Sister Georgie Kotrla was introduced as a first-timer. Come again, both of you; we enjoyed your presence.

The following were accepted as new members: adults, Bill D. Thornton, Charles Marvin Thorp, David Louis Johnson, Joe Edward Johnson; juveniles: Christopher Lynn Mueller and

Kimberly Robin Watkins. Additional insurance was secured by: Leon George Zavodny, Jr, Edwin Kohutek, Mary Kohutek, all adults; and juvenile, Brooks Marriott Gist. A warm welcome to all named and here is hoping you take interest in lodge activities.

These members were reported on the sick list since the last meeting: Brothers Robert W. Vasicek, Jr., Jim !Snodgrass, Gus Schaefer and Bill Barba. Hope you have regained your health, but if you haven't here's hoping it has improved a lot, anyway.

Brother Jerry IVIikulas, Jr., gave the audit committee roport for the first quarter of this year. All of the officers who had reports gave good reports. The chairmen also gave their reports for March.

Board Secretary Frankie Klinkovsky read the board minutes of March 21st.

The kitchen cooktop has been agreed upon; to have five burners instead of four and a griddle. The Bell County unit of the TB Association had requested a donation from our lodge. A motion to donate $25 to this cause passed.

The PA system has been explained to the board by a Mr. Gross from Austin, and the board recommended to the membership to install this system. This Will include 30 speakers in the right places to distribute the sound, a 200 watt amplifier, near wiring, a remote control in a conrenient place to control the volume, two new microphones for the stage and relocate the present microphones. Brother Johnie L. Vanicek explained all these requirements to the membership. We voted to go ahead and start a study of all these needs.

Sister LaVerne Vanicek gave the youth leader's report, because Sister Mihatsch had to leave early. The juniors will go skating on April 11th, from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. The teens will go to the Go-Cart Track on April 9th.

The district meeting will be on April 16th at our neighboring lodge, Lodge No. 24, at Cyclone, and she reminded everyone present to make an effort to attend this meeting. Sister Janette Hruska has volunteered to be the lodge representative in the Miss SPJST contest. We know she will represent us well and here's hoping she will represent District II at the Houston Convention in June. Good luck, Janette.

The youth from Seaton lodge will have is booth set up, so support our youth with a donation to the booth or a purchase.

President Balusek announced that the new five-member planning comanittee will be presented_ to the board 'before they are announced Lo the membership in the next regular meeting cn Sunday, May 7th, at 2 p m.

The lodge concert band directed by Reggie Ludwig had set a public concert for April 30th at 3 p.m. A political rally was discussed and was set for the same afternoon. The orchestra will be playing some of your -favorite music ,for your listening plensare. The candidates will be allowed to speak after the concert. We have a lot of candidates running for the local, district and state offices, but how niftily show up will determine the a moitYit of time allotted each. Brother Calvin C. CherVenka has consented to be the master Of ceremonies and publicity chairman for this event. Make pOois to attend this event. The date is Sunday, April 30th, starting with the band concert at 3 p.m. until ? The kitchen will be open, serving food during the evening.

Sisters may bring pastties, cakes, pies, kolache, etc., for the cake auction that will be held that evening.

Brother Alfred and Sister Martha Klusacek donated a beautiful pot plant 'of Easter lilies and a lucky recipient this door prize was Brother Bill Kosarek. Vice President Leon Zavodny won the other prize, a free pass to the dance.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: We had beautiful springtime weather for the Easter holiday weekend, and I hope that everyone of you were able to enjoy the holiday to the fullest.

No doubt the youngsters enjoyed it best of all, with all the Easter egg hunts. The lodge's picnic ground was ideal for an egg hunt and the young fry really enjoyed looking for those pretty colored oval balls.

Many of the neighbors of Lodge as enjoyed driving nice clean cars on Easter Sunday, because our youth leaders had the youth group washing cars at our lodge on Saturday, April 1st; and, no fooling, they washed many cars and they did a fine job on them.

Besides all of this, they also had a cake sale. This project went over big.

Especially gratifying was the fact that

6 the cakes were the creation of the enterprizing youngsters' own effort, However, I don't mean to slight you mothers, who peeked a little over the young lasses' shoulders while thy were baking those cakes. Which mama wouldn't?

Corning events at Lodge No. 88 — Friday, April 14, the SPJST annual Princess Ball will be held. Ray Jurecka and his orchestra will furnish. the good music for this occasion, from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The dance tickets are only $1 and you can purchase them from the youth of our lodge. Where else can you get such a good bargain and at the same time support the youngsters?

Saturday, April 15, we have a semiformal dance to the good music of Gil Kautz of Taylor. On Sunday, April 16, there will be a big barbecued chicken dinner and surely the good sisters will again bring some goodies for dessert. Serving begins from 11:30 'till ? At 2 p.m. the Czech operetta, "Babicka, z Moravy," will be presented by the Hlahol Dramatic Club; admisSion only 81.25. The play will be followed by a FREE dance, to Henry Tannenberger's Band. Saturday, April 22, Harry Czarnek and his Texas Dutchmen (some are not so Dutbh) will be back here at Lodge No. 88, for a good lively dance. And the last dance of April will be on Saturday the 29th.

This will be a semi-formal dance, to the music of Blumes Orchestra of La Grange. Other activities include a social every Thursday night; homecooked supper, serving starts at 5:30 ;p.m., and this is one place where you 'get a good home-cooked meal away from home; games start at 8 p.m. The singing groups practice time is on Tuesday nights from 7:45 to 9, and the Czech classes are held on each Wednesday night, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Ray Jurecka dance was a happy affair, for those who were able to attend. It was evident that many people had- other plans for the Easter holiday weekend; therefore, the attendance was less than usual. Nevertheless, there 'were quite a few happy celebrants just the- same. Tish and Jim Goodman, celebrated their 35th wedding anniverlsary; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dietzschold, their 28th; Pearl and David Falks, their 26th; Louise and Johnny Paylik, 24th; and Bonnie and Stan Spaeth, just an anniversary without my knowledge as to how many years. Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt and their '.son, Larry and his lovely wife had charge of the dance, due to Harley Cox's absence (who is doing fine but still is taking it easy after his recent illness).

Shirley and Donald Busker are the proud parents of a baby girl, Lisa Ann Marie Busker. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heckler of Crosby, and the great-grandmothers are Mary Sebesta and Rosie Heckler. Shirley, Lisa's mother is a member of Lodge 88, and I hope that Lisa will become one, too.

There was a very nice bridal shower given to Bonnie Cox; daughter of Viola and Harley Cox, and a previous SPJST State- Queen. Several of the lodge sisters from our lodge sponsored the shower. Bonnie received many beautiful and useful gifts. The sisters prepared so much good food for the occasion that thely had to call in the men folks to help them eat it up.

I have one correction to make. Joe Vrazel who passed away recently, was not our member, 'but most of his offspring are. I guess my last letter was a bit too long, and the press evidently ran out of wind, and thereby distorted the last lines about Mr. Vrazel's death.

We have been working out regularly for some four weeks and should be ready to go when the season starts the week of April 17.

We will again play two nights a week in two different leagues:— on Monday nights at Samuel Grand Diamond No 1 and Thursday night at Samuel Grand No. 4.

Wednesday, April 12, 10'72 LODGE NO. 84 CHORAL GROUP Dear Members: On Saturday, March 25th, the uzech Choral Group of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 84, Dallas, had their annual banquet and social get-together. Over 100 persons attended and a happy hour was enjoyed by all preceeding the festivities.

Speakers for the occasion included Lodge Chairman, Adolph Salac, District III Director and Choral Group member Sid Pokladnik and Committee Chairman, Lloyd Baker. The speakers were introduced by MC Bob Liska.

Afterwards Brother Liska introduced Brother Frank Henzen, the orianal director of the Choral Group, vOo once again came out of retirement to take over the reins of the Choral Group.

Brother Henzen paid tribute to four outstanding members of the Choral Group who have contributed greatly since its origin of 11 1/2 years ago. They were: Brother Frank Vodicka, Brother Robert Duron, John Baleja and Sister Baleja.

Dear Members and Friends: We hope all the students who were home for Easter vacation and everyone who left town, arrived safely at their destination.

We had a large attendance at the Easter picnic; had folks from New York, Dallas, and a large group from Waco. We had the pleasure of meeting Kathy Gallagher of De Kalb, Illinois, who attends St. Mary's University in South Bend, hid.; and is the fiancee of Tony Alhohn , who attends Notre Dame, and was home visiting his parents, Brother and Sister Roy and Lydia Alholm. Hear wedding bells will be ringing June 24.

Everyone enjoyed the day and most stayed until the last minute of daylight. It was a big day for the children, as well as for the grown ups, so to you — 'Brother and Sister Tick and Brother and Sister ,Alholm, a big thank you from us all at Lodge 154 and Sokol for making this occasion possible. Sisters Anna Milan and Rose Steinman went by to see Sister Anna Kartcif who is still in Northwest Nursing Home and her condition remains the sane.

It was good seeing Brother Frank Prochaska at the Friendship Club toclay. His wife, Sister Bessie, is still on crutches:, and hopes to part with them in another month.

Sister Anna Milan donatedt$5 to the Building Fund and $10 was 'Ionated by an anonymous donor in the memory of Sister Albino Bunker. We thank you.

Dear Members and..Friends, Our District IV spring meeting will be held April 23 at VFW Hall on Farm Road 422 at Seymour, Texas. We extend an invitation to the Supreme Lodge officers and families, Brother Editor Sefcik and family and membors and friends from the other districts.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. All youth clubs in District IV are to have booths with craft, pastry, canned goods or anything they wish. There will be a noon meal served consisting of fried chicken and trimmings.

12 LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO Dear Members: Our March meeting was one of the best well-attended of the year, and we celebrated our 55th anniversary of our lodge.

A corsage was given to the three charter members: Sisters Sophie Maly, Agnes Dressler and Agnes Graff. Sister Graff was unable to attend, so I took the corsage to her home and enjoyed a little visit with her.

Brother and Sister Alois and Agnes Dressler had their golden wedding anniversary in March. The members had a cake and gift for them. There were eight March birthday celebrant members present. The social was enjoyed by all.

The attendance prize was won by Sister Agnes Dressler, first; and Brother Emil Matula, second.

DISTRICT V YOUTH DIRECTOR We had our spring district meeting on March 19, at Lodge 88. We had a good attendance. The youth were also in good attendance that day.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for having confidence in me and re-electing me for another term as your district youth director.

The poster contest was entered by Lodges 118, 172, and 175. First place was won by Lodge 88, second place by Lodge 175, and third place by Lodge 172.

Our meeting was called to order by Geraldine Kalina. Christine Holmes led the song and pledge. The roll was called and minutes were read. The treasurer's report was then given.

Under old business, we discussed the craft we did after the meeting. Under new business, we discussed the district meeting which will be held in Hillje on April 16.

Then we sang "Happ y 13irtnday" to the members who had birthdays in March.

We drew door prizes, and the winners were: Sandra Spacek -- junior; and Geraldine Kalina, senior.

The body was taken from Kubena Funeral Home to Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home at 12:30 p. m. Monday, March 20 for services at 2 p. m. The Rev. Vaclav Bily officiated_ with burial following in the Sweet Home Parish Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons; Julius of Baytown, Eugene of Yoakum, and Hubert of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Sitka, and Mrs. Frank Bujnock, both of Hallettsville, nine grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

May he rest in eternal peace.

She was born in the Ennis Community January 29, 1892 to John and Marie Hosek Kudrna. On August 30, 1010 she was married to Anton J. Nekuza. She joined the SPJST June 17, 1923 and has been a loyal 'and faithful member.

Funeral services were held February 4, 1972 in St. John Catholic Church. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Ennis.

Surviving are her husband, Anton J. Nekuza; 2 sons, Anton H. Nekuza and.

Raymond B. Nekuza; 4 daughters, Mrs. Stanley Liska, Mrs. Adell Svehlak, Mrs. Louis J. Zabojnik and Mrs. Mildred Vitovsky; one brother, Louis J. Kudrna; 2 sisters, Mrs. Frank Vrla and Miss Emily Kudrna of Dallas; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

We, the undbrsigned Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 24, Cyclone, in behalf of the membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our doparted lodge brother, FRANK KOHUT, who passed away March 28, 1972 at the age of 79 years.

Funeral, services were held at 2 p.m.

March 30, 1972 at the Buckholts Brethren Church; the Rev. John Baletka and the Rev. Henry Beseda officiated.

Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery.

Brother Kohut was born in Milano and had lived in Buckholts since 1925.

He was a retired merchant. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and joined the SPJST on September 14, 1919.

Surviving are his wife, Albina Kohut; a daughter, Mrs. Agnes Rubach of Houston; five brothers, J. D. and Joe Kohut of Temple, Anton Kohut of Barclay, Louis Kohut of Houston, and Henry Kohut of Lions, Ill.; two grandchildren and a great-grand child.

(Continued from page 15) Funeral services were held at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Michalka and SPJST Honorary SL President Edward L. Marek officiating. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Sister Bartek was born in Czechoslovakia and married Joe M. Bartek in 1909. They came to the United States hnd settled in Milam county in 1911.

They had made their home in Milam and Bell Counties all their lives. She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Sister Bartek joined the SPJST on July ' 10, 1921.

Surviving are two sons; Charlie Bartek of Zabcikville and W. J. Bartek of Baytown; five daughters, Mrs. Paul Zucha, of Burlington, Mrs. Annie .Doskocil of Westphalia., Mrs. Janie Jecmenek of Temple, Mrs. Harold Kleypas of Marlin and Mrs. Wilma Younts of Cyclone; 20 grandchildren and 30 greatgrandchildreh. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1963 and three sons.

Items of Interest ACCENT ON HEALTH Rabies in man doesn't happen too often, but the disease still is one to be reckoned with because of its presence in wildlife and the increase in the number of pets owned by Texans.

Those who believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure should guard their pets against rabies by having them vaccinated, says the Texas State Department of Health. It is a good way of protecting your pets — and yourself — against the threat of rabies.

Rabies last year was on the increase after a record low number of cases in 1970. Following a low of only 226 cases, laboratory confirmed animal rabies rose to 322 cases in 1971.

Surprisingly, cat rabies cases outnumbered the number of dog cases last year. This can be interpreted two ways. First, it could be interpreted to mean that the vaccination of dogs is showing results. Or, it could mean that cat exposure to rabies is increasing and that cat vaccinations aren't on par with those of dogs. , Whichever reason you choose, you'd be correct.

Of the 39 pets which came down with rabies, the cats outnumbered the dogs 21 to 18. Dog rabies cases showed a decline by one case, but the number of rabid cats increased from 16 to 21 in one year.

The Veterinary Public Health Division of the State Health Department instituted a bite surveillance program during 1971, and the nine-month results showed the need for more pet protection. Of 5,119 dogs involved in biting episodes, only 34.1 per cent — or about one-third — were known to have been vaccinated. The percentage was much worse for cats. Of 835 cats involved in biting incidents, less than 10 per cent were known to have rabies protection.

As usual, wildlife rabies cases took the spotlight in 1971 with 252 cases.

Rabid skunks headed the list with 186 of the 252 confirmed cases. Thirty-one cases of rabies were confirmed in livestock last year.

To protect the public, the State Health Department furnished 689 antirabies treatment series (14 injections) to bite victims last year. This treatment is doing the job, and the last human fatality to naturally-acquired

rabies in Texas was in 1962.

The record is good, but Health Department officials believe that the odds against rabies can be better if all pets — -dogs and cats : -- are protected against rabies.

Bylo mi tedeno a jsem ptesvedeen, ze tato opereta "Babidka z Moravy" se rovna operete "Muziky, muziky", ba v nekterem ji i pkedei. Moji spolupracovnici, ktere jiste v gichni znate z minulSrch divadel a kteki jsou odbornici na slovovzati jak v kizeni tak i jako herci nikdo jini ne2 br. Milo Karel a br. Jan Schroif. S nimi se v teto operete od srdce zasmeje chcete-li nebo ne. Oba progli tvrdou gkolou divadelnictvi ye stare vlasti v Praze v Brne a na ma11-/ch scenach tehdej gich moderniho divadelnictvi. McLennan County. He was born and reared in Waco, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy B. Johnson, Sr. His father is deceased. He was married in 1945 to the fOrmer Mary Beth Chadwell of Mart, Texas, and they have six children and one grandchild. He and the family belong to the Service Memorial Methodist Church. Mr. Johnson is a Mason and a Shriner.

Johnson graduated from Waco High Scheol; joined the Air Force and served as a tail gunner in a B-17 Bomber while with the 8th Air Force over Germany.

After his discharge he attended 4•C Business College.

In 1951 he joined the Waco Police Department, where he worked as a

dispatcher, car patrolman, motorcycle officer and sergeant of the identification departnient. While a Waco policeman, he attended the Keeler Polygraph Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He resigned in October, 195'1 and went with the Texas Department of Public ±Safety as a polygraph examiner and interrogator at their Region No. 6 Headquarters, located in Waco. subjects through the use of comparative photographs and making up composite pictures of these wanted subjects, while he was a member Of the Waco Police Department. His pictures have lead to the capture of many suspects throughout the State of Texas.

He has written and published a book entitled "Official Police Comparative identification Manual" now being used in connection with the technique in many agencies including the United States Customs.

Mr. Johnson has lectured and attended homicide seminars held jointly by the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas. He has completed standard finger print and identification schools at the Department of Public Safety Academy in Austin, Texas. He has attended numerous FBI training schools throughout the State of Texas.

Johnson was one of the organizers and first president of the Brazos Valley Peace Officers Association which holds quarterly meetings in and around Waco and now has over 300 members from 29 different law enforcement agencies. He was one of the organizers of the Conference on Armed Robbery which is held in a major city in Texas once a year and attended by police officers in various departments throughout the State of Texas.

Mr. Johnson resigned from the Texas Department of Public Safety in March, 1966, and went into the industrial security business for himself. He is licensed by the State of Texas as a polygraph examiner and runs criminal cases as well as civil cases for law-

yers, district attorneys and law enforcement agencies as well as private cases throughout the State of Texas.

He also does personnel work for several major cOmpanies.

The sheriff's job is the top law enforcement job in the county. I feel that I can offer the citizens of this county the type of law enforcement that is essential to maintain a fine place to raise our families and feel secure on the streets as well as in our homes.

Fourth Polka-Waltz Celebratian. April 16 At Mov.17 Texas The 4th Annual Czech-German Polka and Waltz Celebration which has beefl drawing huge crowds in past yeav , will again be held at the air-conditioned VFW Hall in Moulton, Sunday, April 16th (rain or shine).

Continuous music of ten Lavaca County bands will start at 12 noon, With admission to the all-day and night affair only $1.50 per person.
