FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Sunday, February 20, the West Community Hospital was formally dedicated and was in operation that same night. Another milestone in the history of this little Central. Texas city; photos and information are in this issue. There are many SPJST lodges in this area, and many members welcomed this progressive addition to this thriving community. • • On a recent trip to Lodge No. 88, Houston, Brother Albert Bristik asked your editor if he remembered a young man standing next to him. After a few words, the realization dawned from out Of the past that this was the same young man who had been well-known by yours truly a few years ago while he was active with our youth. He has 'grown up to be a fine young man. Lo and behold, last week we received his announcement as a candidate for the Texas House of Representatives. How time flies! • • A Real Man A real man never talks about what the world owes him, the happiness he deserves, the chance he ought to have, and all that; all that he claims is the right to live and play the man. A real man is just as honest alone in the dark, in his own room, as he is in public. A real man does not want pulls, tips and favors; he wants work and honest wages. THE, SPIRIT OF SUCCESS. It's the coward who quits to misfortune, 'Tis the knave who changes each day, 'Tis the fool who wins half the battle, Then throws all his chances away. There is little of life but labor, And the morning may find that a dream; Success is the bride of endeavor, And luck but a meteor's gleam. A !real man is dependable; his simple word is as good as his oath. A real man does not want something for nothing, so the get-rich-quick people cannot use him. A real man never ,hunts danger, and never dodges it when he ought to meet it. A real man is — well, he is an honest man, the finest, best, noblest, most refreshing thing to be found on all the green earth — Are you one? • • Nature keeps a one-price store. She lets you take what you want, but you pay the price, and often leave that which is infinitely more valuable than what you take.

There. are .men who spend the greater part of their lives in accumulating money, intending some day to settle down and enjoy life. To their great disappointment, they find they have lost their ability to enjoy many things Which appealed to them when they were young. They are past learning to enjoy travel, books, music, or art, because their sense of beauty was dulled from lack of use. Friends are lost in the same way. The faculty of making friends has been expended in the making of money. The way to enjoy life is to live as we go along. Being "too busy" to cultivate friendships — even by such simple acts as the writing of a cheery note to a sick friend, will most surely result in everlasting regret. Men think they are making a great success of life because they are getting ahead faster than their neighbors, but they are losing something far more precious than they are gaining. • • The trouble with a lot of us is that we want to accomplish many things; but are not willing to pay the price. If life were a game in which the rewards Were handed out on a silver platter to anyone who happened to ask for them, lots of folks would sleep in rose beds. But, unfortunately, we have to reckon with the thorns. "He who would climb a tree must grasp its branches — not the blos-
