DECEMBER 8, 1971

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK PLEASE NOTICE! To all of our contributors and correspondents: Your editor cannot stress urgently enough, the need for you to please MAIL EARLY. The Christmas rush is beginning to reveal itself in our mall delivery already! Letters mailed as early as Wednesday and Thursday do not reach here until Sunday in seine instances from as close as Temple. The dates in the letters show that they would be worthless if held up for one week. Please bear this in mind; you will be assuring yourself that your letters are printed, and be helping us, also. THANKS! • • In this issue your editor has chosen to hold back a large part of the editorial due to the fact that space is at a premium this time. That can readily be seen by the length of our English section. • • Beginning in this issue, are printed proposals for changes in our SPJST by-laws from our Supreme Lodge, local lodges and members. Some may have to be postponed until later. We are trying to get ALL of the letters in each issue.

The Excerpts from the minutes of the fourth quarterly SL meeting of 1971 are also in this issue.

THE TONE OF VOICE It's not so much What you say As the manner in Which you say it; It's not so much the language you use As the tone in which you convey it; "Come here!" I sharply said, And the child cowered and wept. "Come here," I said — He looked and smiled And straight to my lap he crept. Words may be mild and fair And the tone may pierce like a dart; Words may be soft as the summer air But the tone may break my heart; For words come from the mind Grow by study and art — But tone leaps from the inner self Revealing the state of the heart. Whether you know it or not, Whether you mean or care, Gentleness, kindness, love and hate, Envy, anger, are there. Then, would you quarrels avoid And peace and love rejoice? Keep anger not only out of your words, Keep it out of your voice. Read all of these carefully and save this and other such issues because you will wish to refer to them from time to time.

A photo of the new ,SYD, Sister Dorothy Massey and write-up are in this issue. The rules pertaining to the 1972 Miss SPJST to be chosen at our convention in June, 1972, in Houston are also in this issue. Do you like dealing with people? No quality is more important to an executive. The opinion others have of you is often a reflection of what you think about them; if you like them, they'll like you — and work for you! This doesn't mean that you must be friendly to the point where you fail to criticize poor efforts. It does mean that your criticism should be aimed at helping your subordinate, never at just making yourself feel important. Are you ahead of the competition? The best way to time your speed in the race for success is to keep •a record of your performance. No matter what your job is, note how much you accomplished each week or each month. After a while, you will find yourself automatically setting goals, concentrating on beating your most important competitor — the "you" of last year or last month. In the process, you'll have developed a vital leadership quality, because you can then help others improve their performance.
