FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The Hlahol Dramatic Club of Lodge No. 88, will present a Czech comedy play entitled, "Teta, Fany Postrach Rodiny," Sunday, November 21st at the Chandelier Ballroom in Houston, curtain time starts at 1:30 p.m.

Under the capable direction of Sister Harriette Allison, the play has been in rehearsal for some time and all actors have been working diligently to make this venture a success. Your editor is well acquainted with the play and assures you of an enjoyable day. Every actor in the forthcoming presentation is entitled to high commendation and we should encourage their efforts to retain this cultural heritage in our midst and for the future of our country.

In the course of the fine work of these actors, composed of, men and women, they have served as a cultural bridge between the old world and the new — between Czechoslovakia and America.

Let's give them our heartiest support and try J:o attend this comedy, because they always are giving of their time and talent.

• Our SPJST Society has been fortunate in having young people who distinguish themselves in various achievements, or another . way to put it would be to say that our Society's principles have attracted good young members.

—Lon Woodrum in Lighted Pathway The latest young member whom we salute for his outstanding achievement is Richard Urbish of Lodge No. 117, Robstown, and the son of Brother and Sister Jodie Urbish.

In acquiring distinction for himself he has also brought distinction to our Society. Richard attained prominence in his home, community and state, as a result of ability. He is a versatile young man, energetic, weld-read, carefully informed and keenly concerned and interested in the music field. The Society is very proud of this fine young man and we wish to congratulate him for his outstanding achievement, and wish him good luck in his future endeavors.

will find a. letter which as sent to Supreme Lodge Secretary R. A. Urbanovsky from. Mr. William J. Moir of Royal Arcanum Supreme Council, who was Program Coordinator at the recent NFC at Denver, praising Richard's outstanding performance. .

• We are endebted to Youth Leader June Stewart of Lodge No. 172, Pasadena for the pictures she secured for us for publication during their recent dedication of their lodge, home which was held Sunday, October 18th in Pasadena. Congratulations to the membership for their courage and we wish them a continued success.

• Youth Leader Thelma llrncir of Lodge No. 117, Robstown proudly announced that their youth club was most grateful and delighted to hear its poster had won first place in the Poster Contest sponsored by the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention, held recently at Abilene.

We are certain that Carol and Rita Kamas of Lodge No. 130, Dallas, who danced a modern dance to "Blame it on the Bossa Nova," at the TFC at Abilene were well received, and they captured a lot of fans as well. Good luck and keep up the good work, girls!

Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and 7, was the dedication of the new, very spacious hall of SPJST Lodge No.

Your editor requested Brother and Sister Alvin and Wilma Nesuda to obtain pictures and information connected with the Saturday program, which they very fraternally and obligingly did. The pictures and inforytalton will appear in the next issue I wish to thank them for their kind and rraTema' spirit.

Brother Pokladnik was the main speaker on November 6, and I asked him for a copy of his speech and he gladly obliged. It appears in this issue.

At my request and expense, two technicians, both fine young men agreed to go tape a 1 1/2 hour program there at the new lodge for broadcast the following day on the American-Czech Hour broadcast each Sunday on Radio Station KHBR Hillsboro. Hodge 25, Ennis President Johnie Hrubina, and District III Director Sid Pokladnik addressed the radio audience. There were also six SPJST organizers in the vicinity of Ennis named during the program. Charlie Adamcik's orchestra played for the taped program.

• And now your editor would like to call something to yout attention. In our Vestnik, dated May 19th, were the uncorrected minutes of District III held on"April 18, 1971. The same minutes were published again (per District III by-laws) in the Vestnik of September 22. In those District III minutes (column 3, page 11), it is stated that District Director. Pokladnik mentioned that the Supreme Lodge made a new contract with the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. for the printing of the Vestnik. Director Pokladnik then stated that under the old agreement, the SPJST was paying $4.42 per copy of the Vestnik plus postage and that now under the new contract the SPJST is paying $3 per copy of the Vestnik plus postage. Director Pokladnik went on to remind the members that the Supreme Lodge is saving them money, that the Supreme Lodge is doing something, and that there are 13 men serving as the Supreme Lodge.

Brothers and Sisters, I have had this statement, or misstatement, brought to my attention and have answered that this will very likely be corrected in the District III fall meeting. It was not.

If the Cechoslovak Publishing Co., with Brother Jos. Holasek as president of the corporation, wishes to publish the Vestnik free it is none of my concern; however, I do like to see the record kept straight. The Cechoslovak

Wednesday, November 17, 1971 Publishing Co. paid the postage for mailing the Vestnik to the date of February 1, 1971, on which date the SPJST Supreme Lodge began paying the postage for mailing the Vestnik.

If we look at the reports from. Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik which are always on pages 16 and 17 of the Vestnik, once a month, we will find that in the Vestnik dated March 10, the postage was $580.72 for February; then in the Vestnik, April 14, for March postage, $846.25; Vestnik, May 12, for April - $700; Vestnik, June 9, for May - $700; Vestnik, July 14, for June - $900; Vestnik, August 11, for July - $900; Vestnik, September 15, $1,000 for August; and the Vestnik of October 13, $1,000 for September.

Therefore, we have a total sum of $6,626.97 from the 1st of February through September; a total of eight months, so far this year. This shows that the postage has always been a considerable part of the cost of the Vestnik. The $4.42 previously paid to the publishing company included postage, which was passed on to the Post Office Department. Thus the $1.42 difference in the contract price is not all saved.

Sister AneZka Leskovjan, age 79, passed away October 2, 1971 in Dayton, 'Texas. Interment was in White Cemetery, Highlands. Sister Leskovjan was a member of Lodge Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard.

• • Sister Johana (Janie) Krasucky, age 75, passed away October 22, 1971 in 'Terrell. Burial was held in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Seagoville. Sister Krasucky was a member of Texasky Kvet No. 158, West.

• Brother Anton J. Mikeska, age 44, passed away October 25, 1971 in Waco.

Brother Mikeska was buried in Seaton Cemetery and he was a member of Lodge Cesky Prapor Lodge No. 24, Cyclone.

Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Janek of Alvarado and Mr. Frank Helona, Sr. of Abbott. The Willie Helona family hold membership at Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Brother August Kolar, age 60', passed away October 21, 1971 in Victoria. Burial was in Woodman of the World 'Cemetery, Rosenberg. Brother Kolar was a member of Lodge Pokrok Benview No. 153, La Salle.

Mr. Chairman, your honors, the Mayors of Ennis and Sonoma, Officers of the SPJST Supreme Lodge, Officers of Neighboring Ledges and Societies, My Sisters, Brothers, and Friends: It is a great honor and privilege to be asked to be your speaker at 'this grand opening ceremony of your new and beautiful lodge home in this great community of Ellis COunty.

At a gathering, and celebration of this type many thoughts come to a person's mind, especially thoughts of the past and our great heritage.

For many years before the turn of the century your forefathers and mine immigrated from what is today called Czechoslovakia, and settled in many parts of Texas to make it their new homeland. Most of these newcomers joined a Czech fraternal society called. in Czech - ceska slovenske pod purne spolky - known among the members as CSPS. This old-time society had 25 active lodges in Texas, one of whom was Ennis.

In 1896 the CSPS held their national convention in St. Louis. Several proposals by the Texas Delegates were presen;ted 'for modernizing the Society. These proposals were rejected by the convention. The Texas delegates being disappointed at the national convention actions returned home and called a state meeting in La Grange, during the month of June, 1597.

At this meeting, 22 lodges were rep-

4 resented. It was here that the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas — the name in Czech being Slovanska, Pod Porujice, Jednota Statu Texasu — and known as SPJST was founded. Three additional lodges were given their charters as of July 1, 1897, and Lodge 25, Ennis, was one of these. Thus in 1972, the SPJST will celebrate their 75th anniversary.

The progress of our Society has been truly amazing. As of December 1, 1897 we had 25 lodges with a membership of 875. Today, we have 135 lodges with a membership of over 45,000.Today our Society has over $65,000,000 of insurance in force and over $18,000,000 in assets.

Recently SPJST dedicated new State Quarters in Temple, and on behalf of the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge, you are invited to visit us whenever possible.

Today, our Society has expanded its fraternal services into many fields. A few which I would like to mention are our homes for the aged, our university scholarship program, our physical fitness support, and our state-wide youth program, and many other fraternal activities on local, district and state-wide levels. ' This brings us to today, when Lodge 25, in its 74 year moves into its third and finest lodge hall. This edifice is a great monument to our forefathers — those great men who had the foresight and the courage to pioneer our way for us. It is because of them .. that we today can have true fraternal fellowship and association with our families and neighbors. It is that type of courage and foresight that built this great community and made a strong city and state. This is what we must never lose. Each of you should stand erect and say with pride: this is my lodge.

In 1897 Lodge 25 had less than 25 members; today Lodge 25 has nearly a thousand members.

Your lodge is blessed with outstanding leadership. In your president, Brother Hrabina, and his fellow officers, you have a great team, fully supported by all the committees and the general membership. I am confident of the continued future success of Lodge 25. Remember this edifice belongs to every member of Lodge 25, and every member is important.

This community is also blessed with other fine fraternal societies who have recently built or re-modeled their

VESTNfK lod g e halls. I am thinking of KJTKJZT, Knights of Columbus, and Sokol whose facilities are shared with a sister lodge,'Lodge No. 135 SPJST. I was delighted and impressed that in your ceremonies today you began your dedication with a presentation of the flag of our country. Our allegiance to this flag must never, never waiver, for this is our country.

Mr. President, Brother Johnnie Hrabina, officers and members of Lodge 25: On behalf of the Su p reme Lodge officers and directors may I salute and congratulate you for this great achievement and wish for you continued success in this beautiful new lodge home.

May I also add my personal congratulations and best wishes for a job well done.

110/A0 CROSS IL/51Th'a,s n John Douglas Stasa, Ill, claimed Miss Gayle Lanette Marburger for his bride in a single ring ceremony in Holy Cross Lutheran Church Saturday evening, September 11, 1971 at 5 p.m.

Pastor D. I. Dolton officiated before an altar adorned with an arrangement of white gladioli and blue mums flanked by altar candelabra. White satin bows marked the family pews.

Gordon Marburger, brother of the bride was alcolyte.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Marburger of this city. She is a May, 1971, graduate of Yoakum High School. Prior to her marriage she was employed in the office of Hochheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Ins. Association.

The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Helen Stasa of Route 2, Hobstown, and Mr. John Stasa, II, of 1924 Green Grove in Corpus Christi. He attended school in Banquete, Texas, near Robstown.

Mrs. Norman Neeley was organist.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was lovely in an Empire styled bridal gown of white silk Organza and heavy cotton lace. The entire bodice of heavy cotton lace, featured a wedding band cellar, and the lace extended over the shoulders briefly, and joined Organza Bishop sleeves that were caught to matching lace cuffs. The organza skirt was A-line and an organza bow at the Empire waistline in back introduced the chapel length organza train. Her headdress was of the matching cotton lace of land cut

Wednesday, November 17, 1971 flowers and petals trimmed with pearls from which floated her three-tiered veil of silk illusion.

She carried a bouquet of white tulips and carnations and ivy leaves, centered with a yellow throated orchid.

Preceding the bride down the aisle were her feminine attendants attired in charming' peon de soie gowns of aqua blue over-laid with matching blue lace. They were fashioned along' the empire silhouette with tiny puffed sleeves. They wore their hair pinned in curls accented with aqua blue bows.

Their shoes and gloves were white and they wore pearl pendants, gifts of the bride.

They carried bouquets of white daisies and baby's breath with swhite satin ribbon strpamers.

Mrs. Allen Stasa of Robstown was matron of honor. Miss Karen Jirkovsky was maid of honor. Miss Teresa Lockstedt and Miss Marlene Pfuhl were bridesmaids. Little Miss Connie Rab, hi the role of flower girl, was attired identical to the maids except she wore a white dress.

Michaei Pustka was ringbearer. He carried the rings on a lace covered white satin pillow.

Hest man duties were performed by the bridegroom's brother, Allan Stasa of Robstown.

Groomsmen included Gary Marburger, brother of the bride, Donnie Loving and James Smith, cousin of the bridegroom.

Ushering were Gary 1VIarburger and Allan Stasa.

For her daughter's marriage, Mrs. Marburger wore a blue double-knit street length dress, black patent accessories, and white carnation corsage.

Mrs. Stasa attended her son's nuptials wearing a blue double knit streetlength dress, beige accessories and white carnation corsage.

After the wedding ceremony all motored to the Morris Center Community Center for a reception.

Miss Elva Behrens presided at the wedding register.

All the tables were laid with full skirted white ruffled net cloths, over white satin. The bride's table was centered with the four-tiered white iced colonade cake, detailed with blue roses, and featuring a sweeping stairway from both sides with the diminutive bride and bridegroom on the top tier, and a replica of the feminine attendants descending on one stairway, and a replica of the g roomsmen de-

Wednesday, November 17, 1971 scending the opposite stairway. Flanking the cake were candleabra holding white tapers. The bride placed her bououet on the table for floral decor.

Ham salad, and cheese sandwiches, sausage rolls, a variety of delicious homemade cakes, were served from another table. The tea table held iced tea, and the coffee table, coffee. The , bridesmaids placed their bouquet on the main table at which, the wedding party was seated.

Miss Carol Holik served cake, Miss Sherral Behrens, served tea, and Miss Janet Hagans served coffee. Miss Carol Rab passed out napkins and plates.

Other members of the houseparty included Mrs. Fritz Barre as chairman, Mesdames Edwin Regner, Daniel Jirkovsky, Jim Rab, Alvin Hagens, Milton Behrens, Matthew Pustka, Arno Pfuhl, Joe Hanzelka, Wilbert Hagens and Alvin Schroeder.

The Rudy Kurtz Orchestra provided music for dancing that night.

When leaving for the wedding trip the bride was wearing a gold bonded knit safari styled dress, with which she wore black accessories and the orchid lifted from her bridal bouquet.

The couple will be at home at 4634 Green Grove in Corpus Christi, where Mr. Stasa is self-employed as a subcontractor.

Out-of-town guests came from Corpus Christi, Hallettsville, Seguin, Austin, Flatonia and Shiner.

-SPJSTLETTERS FALL MEETING DISTRICT III SPJST, UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 24, 1971 AT LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS, TEXAS District III President Bob Oates called the meeting to order at 10:40 a.m. The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was led by the president of the Lodge 84 Youth Club.

Lodge No. 84 President Adolph Salac extended a cordial welcome to all present, followed by a response by District III 1st Vice President Johnnie Krizan.

Roll call of lodges by District III Secretary Albert Bann( revealed six lodges present. Those represented were Lodges 6, 25, 35, 66, 84, and 130.

District III 2nd Vice President John Kutni paid tribute to the deceased members of District III. The minutes of the spring meeting

V2STNt/C of District III, held April 18, 1971, at Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth were approved after one minor correction. It pertained to the youth director.

District III Treasurer Robert Urban presented this report which was approved as read: General Account — $1,128.04 Youth Camp (Certificate of Savings) — $2,087.50 Youth Camp Fund — $214.40 Youth Camp Fund Total -®. $2,301.90 District III Youth Fund — $231.08.

President Bob Oates called on District III Youth Director Wilma Nesuda for her report. Sister Nesuda began with a report on the Youth Achievement Day, Julie 27, 1971, held at Linden Hall Lodge No. 66 in Waco, with 143 participants who entered. Only one contest had no participants, this being Individual Talent, age bracket 15-17.

Unclaimed in prize money — $21.00 Total cost of awards, ribbons, flowers, and supplies — $660.51.

District Youth Director Wilma Nesuda reported that 123 youth members and 24 adults attended camp at Camp Val Verde, August 1-5, 1971. With additional staff, total meals charged for were 152. Average cost of camp per per,son — $23.50.

Sister Nesuda continued her report and said that she was shocked and dismayed, when she received the news that State Youth Director James J. Janousek had resigned. She gave a copy of the following letter to District III, Director Cyrill Pokladnik. (Copies also to District III President and District III Secretary). She further stated that this would give District Director Pokladnik time to consider these questions from the District III Youth Department, before he made his report.

The letter is as follows: SPJST District III Meeting October 24, 1971 On September 20, 1971 the District Youth Director received a letter of notification from Brother James J. Janousek that quoted his letter submitted to the Supreme Lodge stating that he will resign from his position as State Youth Director effective October 1st, 1971. This notification was followed by a notice in the Vestnik, September 29th that this notice was submitted September 16th. The Supreme Lodge president's letter that was published in the same issue stated that the State Youth Director was asked to resign.

We recall from excerpts from the minutes or the July Supreme T..edge,

meeting that a special meeting was called to make recommendations to the By-Law Committee on by-law changes and recommendations for September 8th and 9th. Was this meeting postponed and held September 15th and 16th?

Did the July meeting schedule any other business for this special meeting?

When was the requested resignment (request for resignation) proposed?

Were all members of the Supreme Lodge present at the time? Was the decision to ask for the resignation unanimous?

When was Brother Janousek notified of the request for his resignation?

When was his resignation expe4ed?

When was it received? To what. .ate did he remain an the payroll?

Was severence pay given? Did Brother Janousek request a letter of recommendation? Did he receive it? Who signed it?

President Oates asked the District III Organizer to make his report.

Brother Alvin Nesuda reported that the district needed only $18,750 to make its quota of $1,500,000 in sales. He asked all the organizers to stand and congratulated them for their fine work.

He spoke cf his efforts in the inactive lodges to obtain organizers and promote new activity.

Next order of business was the report of District III Director and Rest Home Director Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik.

Brother Pokladnik spoke of the problems of Moving into the new headquarters building and invited anyone who wished to, to visit the Supreme Lodge Headquarters. Brother Pokladnik stated that the Board has many obligations. Some are pleasant, others are very hard to make. As to the letter, he felt this should have been sent to the Supreme Lodge. He said some of the questions were hard to answer, and that it was the decision of the entire Board. Director Pokladnik stated that the resignation was strictly as announced in the Vestnik, for reason of health. That the Board had received a letter from the state youth director's doctor (sent at the SYD's request), stating that the duties of his job were too strenuous for his health. Director Pokladnik said he based his decision en the fact that he felt the man's life was worth more than his job. Brother Pokladnik. that the state youth director is hired by the Supreme Lodge and has to answer to the same. He felt this was handled in the proper

e manner, and stated that, if anyone had any questions about the resignation of the state youth director, that they should write to the Supreme Lodge. He said that he believed that the members of District III: know the position he was in.

Director Pokladnik reported that he had attended the Western Fraternal Life Insurance (WBFA) Convention; also the National Fraternal Congress at Denver and the Texas Fraternal Congress at Abilene.

As a member of the Youth Camp Committee, Brother Pokladnik said that the committee had visited many camps of different organizations as well as SPJST Camps and that the committee was compiling its information, to present its report to the convention.

Director Pokladnik said that he had enjoyed working with the youth at the 'different youth functions. He congratulated the organizers for their fine Work.

In his Rest Home report, Director Pokladnik stated that at Rest Home No. 2, at Needville, there were 53 guests with a capacity of 58. In the past month, the home had netted $2,181.

Rest Home No. 1 at Taylor is full and is netting from $1,000 to $2,000 a month. Balance on hand at Rest Home No. 1 is $17,247 and $7,201 at Rest Home No. 2. Of this $12,000 is due ' for interest on loans. He felt that the homes should be able to meet their obligations in six months.

President Oates asked if there were any questions in regard to any of the reports given. Sister Wilma Nesuda said that . the questions in the letter Were not personal, but represented the Youth Department. These would have been directed to the Supreme Lodge president had he been present. She said that the motive is to determine if the provisions of Article 39-e of the SPJST By-Laws were followed. Sister Nesuda stated that inspite of his health, Brother Janousek always had his work done on time and that he always was prompt with his reply and aid if she asked for information or assistance in her youth work. She said that the work of the state youth director could not be measured in a 40hour week. She felt that Brother Janousek was a top man for this job and his leaving would be a great loss to the youth program. She thought that it wasn't exactly fraternal to dismiss an employee when he is ill, that he has

V2STNfIC earned a recommendation, should receive severence pay, be given a 20-day notice as provided for in Article 39-e and other considerations as provided by the Fair Labor Practices laws and Texas Employment Laws.

Director Pokladnik said the Board did nothing against the law, that they are aware of the law, that James received certain privileges, that everything was done properly and repeated that the Board received his personal resignation, plus the letter from his doctor.

Sister Helen Oates stated that she understood the feelings of Director Pokladnik, but also those of Sister Nesuda, who was not speaking for herself, but for all the youth leaders of the district. Since Brother Sid is the district's elected representative to the Supreme Lodge, it is his duty to inform the members of his district. Would he PLEASE answer the questions?

Director Pokladnik said that Brother Janousek was asked to resign, he was not sure of the date of the meeting; he thought all members of the Board were present except one, that Brother Janousek was given two hours to consider. He stated that James called and asked for time to consider until Monday, which was granted. That the Board received his resignation postmarked the same day it was asked for, that Brother Janousek remained on the payroll until October 1st, 1971.

He did not comment on the severence pay. He did not know Of a request for a recommendation, felt James should receive one. According to Supreme Lodge records, James had been absent the following number of days: In 1969, 22 days absent, 10 days granted; 1970, 291A days plus 461/2 days granted; 1971, 38 days absent, 9 days allowed. That the by-laws were consulted, and that the resignation was best for all involved.

Brother Emil Petr urged everyone to keep a cool head in discussing the matter and that two very fine persons were involved (namely Brother Pokladnik and Sister Nesuda) and there was no need to cause hard feelings.

The meeting was adjourned for lunch at 12 noon.

President Oates reconvened the meeting at 1:30 p.m., with a youth program featuring the District III youth winners of the State Royalty, Craft, 'Talent, and Points Contests.

The afternoon roil call had a representation from eight lodges: Nos.

President Oates recognized the following dignitaries: Honorary Supreme Lodge President Brother Edward L. Marek and Mrs. Marek, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik and Mrs. Zabcik, and Supreme Lodge Treasurer Leonard Mikeska.

Under old business, the Rules and Regulations Committee, consisting of Brother Albert Banik, Jerry Milan and Sister Wilma Nesuda presented this change to Article III, Section 1. The officers shall be: president, 1st vice president, 2nd vice president, secretary, treasurer, flag bearer, outh director, and substitute youVi director, who will act as assistant youth director.

Rules and Regulations Committee Chairman Albert Banik moved that the change be accepted as proposed. The motion was seconded by Brother Otto Harms. Motion carried.

President Oates opened the floor for new business.

DYD Wilma Nesuda reported that District VII camp expenses had exceeded their allocation by $197.19 and requested that District III pay this until they receive their next allocation.

A motion by Brother' John Kutin to this effect carried.

Sister Nesuda asked for a volunteer to keep the scrapbook, reported that her books are ready for audit, and arrangements for the next year's camp are underway (probably at Camp Val Verde). Training classes for youth leaders have been postponed, and those wanting pictures Of the State Royalty should contact the Head of the Youth Department at Supreme Lodge.

Brother Robert Urban moved that District III donate $50 to the American-Czech Foundaition. Motion carried.

Sister Helen, Oates asked District III Youth Director Nesuda to explain with information on hand the procedures followed in the resignation of the state youth director. She felt that the whole thing was a discredit to the fraternal spirit of the organization.

Brother Robert Urban Offered an amendment that two members of the Executive Board be selected to which the members could send or call in their questions.

President Oates called for a discussion of the motion.

Brother Pokladnik spoke in favor of the motion.

President Oates appointed Brother Arnold Vrla as parliamentarian.

Sister Wilma Nesuda said that the District III Executive Board did not have the power to act if not authorized by the body.

Brother James Janousek said he and his wife, Kathy, came to the meeting because they have missed so many of them in the past years. He expressed his feelings that both Brother Pokladnik and Sister Nesuda had been a great help to him and he considers them to be his dearest friends. He hoped things could be handled in a fraternal manner and did not want this to be a long and drawn out meeting because of him, but that he did want the truth about the entire affair brought out.

Brother Rudolph Zalman asked for the question. Motion with the amendment was approveci.

Brother Jerry Milan reported that the By-Law Committee would meet at Temple on November 27th and 28th and urged members to send their changes to the committee.

Next order of business was selection of a nominating committee. President Bob Oates appointed Ben Jarma (84), Henry Breitkreutz (35), and Aubrey Uptmor (6). First Vice President Johnnie Krizan appointed Don Steinman (154) and Eugene Parma (130).

Lodge No. 25, Ennis was selected as host lodge for the spring district meeting. Lodge No. 25, Ennis, will also host the District III Youth Achievement Day on June 25, 1972.

Brother Johnnie Hrabina, president of Lodge No. 25, Ennis announced that they would have their grand opening of their new hall on November 6th and 7th and invited everyone to attend.

President of Lodge No. 84, Brother Adolph Salac, said it had been a pleasure to host the meeting and invited

District III Organizer Brother Alvin Nesuda announced that he had learned that Brother Emil Petr had sent in an application for $35,000 which will put well over its sales quota.

District District III 1st Vice President Johnnie Nrizan reported that Ettil or Sefeik could not attend the meeting because of a commitment to the Czech Day in Houston.

Brother Otto Hanus reported that the museum has had visitors from 17 states and two foreign countries, and urged everyone to bring, or contact him if they have items for the museum.

President Oates called on Supreme Lodge Treasurer Leonard Mike:;tet for a few remarks. Brother Mike: -.1:a said he brought regards from the Supreme Lodge. He congratulated District III for a very successful year in youth work and in insurance sales. He further stated that the youth leaders and the organizers are the life blood of the SPJST. Dear Members, At our last lodge meeting it was agreed by the membership present that New Colony Lodge No. 69 would disband by the end of calendar year

1971.

The present lodge officers were instructed by the membership to take the necessary steps to accomplish this action. This freedom of choice was decided upon rather than the alternative of merging with another lodge and therewith automatically transferring the total membership to one single lodge.

LODGE NO. 40, BILLIE I had the pleasure of seeing our new Hillje SPJST Hall building two weeks ago. It's a big, beautiful brick building with mahogany finish and central air conditioning and heating. The building committee is very proud of the long awaited Italie although they added that they still have much to finish up around the hall.

The building committee consists of Brothers Albert Kresta, Jerry Polasek, Paul Sablatura, chmn; and Charlie Kulcak, who are all doing a fine job.

LODGE NO. 40, HILLJE Vestnik • Box 85 West, Texas November 11, 1971 Dear Members: My examination of SPJST Bylaws leads me to believe that former State Youth Director James Janousek lost his job recently in direct violation of Article 39. If this is true, he was deprived of his constitutional rights to a fair hearing and should be reinstated to his post.

I refer to a Bylaws paragraph listed under Article 39-e (page 58) stating: "The Supreme Lodge has the duty

and authority to investigate all irregularities, disorders, incompetence in office of any member of the Supreme Lodge, medical director, state youth director and editor (after consultation with the Publication Committee); and after a thorough investigation and after. TWENTY (20) DAYS NOTICE TO THE ACCUSED, and AFTER a HEARING OF SUCH CHARGES, may discharge Die accused from his office by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of members of the Supreme Lodge."

I have seen no official report that these procedures were followed and ask that an accounting of this requirement be published in the Vestnik immediately by Brother Nick Morris and the Supreme Lodge. The official Supreme Lodge statement published after the special called meeting that considered Brother Janousek's employment gave no indication that constitutional procedures were followed. Especially distressing to me was that this action came only a few days after Brother Janousek had successfully conducted the State YAD Royalty Program.

The official statement in the Sept.

29th issue gives the impression that undue pressure tactics were employed completely contrary to the aims of Our fraternal and benevolent organization.

9 This attitude deserves to be discussed in detail at the state convention and election in June for the good of the order.

Supreme Lodge officials attending the District VI fall meeting at Taiton, November 7, 1971 left members with the impression that they were out of order" in asking for an explanation as to Brother Janou&7 c's departure after years of service and devotion to the SPJST and close friendship to all of us.

Heirarchy cannot hold rank and file members in low esteem especially at our democratic meetings where SPJST matters should be •i!?;htfully di3c/ssed.

This also applies to our °WA' organ Vestnik, which must continue to be the forum for metabcrs to be able to speak out freely on SP.IST matte rs.

Brother Joe Hejny suggested at Taiton on November 7 that if someone wanted to know circumstances surrounding Brother JanouselV leaving that they should have contacted the Supreme Lodge in private.

I feel obliged to stress to all officers that SPJST is not a private insurance corporation to be run as a dictator would.

SPJST must always strive to live up to its mottoes published on the masthead of this Vestnik and to take seriously the meaning behind our organization's name, "Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas".

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Once again the time of the year is here when it is time for me to write this important letter, so please take your time and read it carefully.

First I want to inform all of you SPJST members of Lodge ,Stefanik No. 142, Houston, that Mr next meeting will be our annual meeting of the year and the time is here. We will have election of officers for the year of 1972. We will also elect our bar manager. Also beginning on June 18, 1972 our 21st Convention will be held in the Rice Hotel in Houston, so we will elect 4 delegates and 4 substitutes to go to the convention. Please try to be present and vote for the one you think will be best qualified for his or her position.

We will also discuss and vote on a very important special subject.

In our October meeting we discussed purchasing the land northwest of our lodge. It was voted on by the members present and the majority recommended to try to purchase the land, but we decided to let this be brought up in our December (annual) meeting and to publish this at least twice in the Vestnik, so each member of Lodge No. 142 would know about this meeting and try to be present and give his or her opinion, so we can proceed with it.

This meeting is scheduled to be held on the first Sunday in December; that is the 5th of December, beginning promptly at 1 o'clock.

We could never make it without our kitchen committee and I would like to mention their names because sometimes our most important people never get the praise they so greatly deserve; they are Liz Meyers, Mrs. Klechka, Mrs. Rutherford and Mrs. Hlavaty, and without the supervision of our "Papa" Hlavaty, the girls could never make it.

I couldn't help but slip up on the Bennie Matusek family; it was apparent they were enjoying the good sausage dinner.

I will not attempt to detail the minute procedure of the meeting because these details will appear in the minutes of Lodge 88 in the subsequent meeting, however, I wish to call to your attention, the highlights and the most important issues discussed and reported in the meeting.

Chairman of the Board Louis Hanus 'reported that the Harris County Historical Society will sponsor a program at the lodge on December 8 and urged the members to attend and participate.

He was followed by District V Director, E. J. Hanka who further elaborated on the Society and informed the members that the Society was founded in 1923 and the basic function is to record the history of all nationalities and ethnic groups in this country. Supreme Ledge President Nick Morris will be the guest speaker at this function and the program will commence at 7:30 p.m. Music will be furnished by Brother Clarence Baca and his orchestra, the Lodge 88 Choral Group will participate, picture slides of activities in. Texas will be shown, attendance prizes will be presented and last, but not least, kolache and coffee will be served. Sister Frances Olexa will make the kolache, so there you have it. Remember, Lodge 88, 7:30 p.m., December 8, 1971.

Another event to remember is the traditional maintenance of the presentation of Czech plays which has been a tradition for so, many, many years at Lodge 88. Dramatic Club President Tim IS.Ostorn informed the members that a comedy, titled "Teta Fany Postrach Rodiny" will be presented on November 21, 1971.

Congratulations to you members of Lodge No. 25, Ennis, Texas. District V Director Hanka returned from visiting your lodge with nothing but glowing remarks about your beautiful building and facilities.

Congratulations are also in order for Editor Sefcik and wife Maxine on their 19L11 wedding anniversary, which. was celebrated at Lodge 88 on November tile 8th.

Wednesday, November 17, 1071 LODGE POKROK NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members, Just want to let all our members and friends know that our Czech Bazaar held November 7th was a great success. It took a lot of planning, hard work and cooperation. I, personally want to thank the entire entertainment, kitchen and house committees, the youth leader and all the assistant youth leaders, the teenagers, junior youth, the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra, the Four Plus Five Group, The Beseda Dancers, the very popular handwriting analyst, and all our members and friends who helped in any way.

Also special thanks to our many members Who brought such nice donations. Such teamwork and cooperation goes to show that it was and is true fraternalism, Our next meeting is set for Sunday, November 21st. Please mark your calendar, so we can start promptly at 3 p. m. a family social,; is being planned right after the meeting, so plan to stay and enjoy visiting, a hotdog supper and games. I'm sure our sisters won't mind bringing their favorite dessert.

The October minutes were read by Sister Bolton, and after a few corrections, were approved.

These members were reported on the sick list: Sister Frances Vanicek, Brothers Tom Mikeska and Vince E. Lesikar. Since the meeting, I learned that Sister Lesikar, (his wife) is also hospitalized. Brother Albin (Butch) Sodek became ill during the meeting and was taken to King's Daughters Hospital by 'ambulance. At this time, he is still a patient there. We are hoping you all have a quick recovery from your ailments and will be able to be back home with your families.

The chairmen gave glood reports for the month of October.

Wednesday, November 17, 1971 Next item of business was to have a workday and general clean-up on Saturday, November 20th at about 10 a. m. In case of bad weather the alternate date is the following Saturday, November 27th.

The lodge annual Christmas party was discussed. The date is set for the second Sunday, December 12 starting at 2 p. m. social from 4 to 5 supper at 5 p. m. with a youth program at 6:30 p. m. The sisters will be asked to bring sweets, as usual. Brother Frankie and Sister Irma Klinkovsky and Bro. Johnny and Sister Vlasta Hruska volunteered to be chairmen for this party. They will be needing help in the kitchen with the preparation of the meal. This party will be for Lodge No. 47 members, only!

We proceeded with the elections of officers. The results were: President — Dan Balusek Vice-President — Leon Zavodny Recording See ry — Ruby L. Bolton Financial Sec'y — Willie E. Kohutek Treasurer — Clarence Sodek elected after being tied with Jerry Mikulas, Jr., but Brother Mikulas withdrew and Brother Balusek didn't have to make a decision.

Brother Frank V. Spanhel was reelected as parliamentarian.

Brothers Ralph Kohutek and Donald Pechal, teenagers were elected as flagbearers.

Sister Marie Mikatsch was re-elected as youth leader for another year; we have confidence in her work. Sister Annie Jakubec was elected as the Czech reporter and I as the English reporter. Brother Sefcik, another year to put up with my scribbling. (Keep up the good work — Editor).

Election of two trustees resulted in Woodrow Marek and Frankie Klinkovsky being elected for three-year terms.

Brother Anton Motl was elected to a one year unexpired term, in place of Brother Clarence Sodek who becathe an officer.

The delegates chosen to serve as our representatives to the 1972 convention were in the order of selection; Jamie L. Vanicek, Dan Balusek, Willie Kohutek, Woodrow Marek, Frankie Klinkovsky, Anton Motl, Clarence Sodek, Ruby Bolton, Jerry Mikulas, Jr. and Leon Zavodny. Alternates are: Leon Sodck, Jerry Pechal, Lillian Kosarek, Frank Spanhel, and Butch Sodek.

All of the committees and chairmen were postponed to the next meeting.

Noodle soup and sweets, that the ladies brought were served after the meeting. Brother Sodek's becoming ill shook up everyone, and some left to go to the hospital with Sister Georgie and him. Not many stayed for the soup prepared by Sister Vallie Zavodny. It was good.

ROBSTOWN, LODGE NO. 117 Dear Readers: Robstown Youth Club's theme for the rest of 1.971 is "Grow and Help Others." To carry out our theme many activities are being planned. On October 29, our Club toured the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi - ARADMAC, the largest helicopter overhaul depot in the United States, is housed

Wednesday, November 17,,19`71 there, and we saw bullet-riddled heti, copters straight from Vietnam, being overhauled and returned to active duty, as good as new. What a wonderful educational tour it was! And to make it easier on us, we were taken on a mall train to the various hangers and shops. The trip ended with a sack lunch enjoyed at Cole Park overlooking beautiful Corpus Christi Bay. Our bus has made all the out-oftown football games, taking fans who do not have transportation. Fathers of members are our drivers, and with the profits from these trips, we plan to put new carpeting, upholstery, and a paint job in our bus. We could fill two buses on these trips!

A skating-bowling parity was held Saturday, November 6, at the Gulf Skating Rink and Bowl in Corpus Christi. About 00 members and guests attended, which made us loaded to capacity.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Hrncir Farm Building (so called until t4,6 winning name in the "Name-theeHarn" contest is chosen). A new contest, "Coins for Chen Shr Jing," will begin between the juniors, (1-5 grades) and the seniors grades 6-10). More details of this exciting contest will be given in a later report.

Our friends all over the state are invited to attend our annual lodge meeting and Christmas program on December a. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Robstown Community Hall, 5 miles west of Hobstown. Party and Youth Program will begin at 3:30 followed by a spread supper. All youth who participate in the program will be entertained at a Christmas party at the Hrncir home on December 20, so if you want to be in on the fun, do plan a trip to our area December 5.

The Robstown Youth Club was most grateful and delighted to hear its poster won first place in the poster contest sponsored by the Texas Fraternal Congress. We consider this a real honor and plan to use the prize money to purchase something special for our "fla y ing club house."

Mrs. Mary Schenburn has agreed to bring some smaller ceramic items to the Youth Room on Thursday, November 18th so that club members can make a gift item which will be ready for Christmas. The cost will depend on item selected. Want to make a gift for Mom or that favorite aunt? Come to the Youth Room about 8 p.m. (after choir rehearsal) and paint.

Donations for our Thanksgiving basket will be accepted until 'Wednesday, Nov. 24th. like to thank everyone who helped and especially Weldon Galler and Henry Slovak who went after the trailer for us and a big thanks to James Pavlicek for loaning us the trailer and cotton and to you, Weldon, for driving for the kids. LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Youth Clubbers, Since our last regular monthly meeting, we have had many fun and exciting activities. After the meeting we went to the Arts and Crafts show here in Robstown. There we saw many pretty things that people in the area had made. We also saw a talent show.

On Sunday, October 24, we went to the District VII meeting in Corpus Christi. We also had dinner there.

Then many of our district youth participated in a program. After the program there was a cake walk and tickets were sold for a drawing of a clock.

The money from this proj ect went to the he district youth fund.

The next thing was our trip to the NAS in Corpus Christi. This was educational for all of us. When the tour was over, we went to a park and had a picnic lunch.

The night before Halloween we had a "Halloween Howl" at Hrncir's barn in the country. There were many scary and spooky things, then a lot of good refreshments.

We have many more fun things planned for the rest of the year.

NitSTNf 11 LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, Well, the grand opening of SPJST Lodge No. 25 is over, but that's not the end. It is just the beginning. It is like a whole new life starting all over again. Back in July of 1970 when our lodge hail burned to the ground, that was the end of all of our regular activities, but we didn't stop there. We had to make plans for a new building, a better building for everyone to enjoy and be proud of. On November 6th our dream became a reality, with the impressive ceremonies . . . the flag ceremony, the guest speaker, and the actual ribbon cutting. The Saturday evening concluded with music by Johnny Mensik and his playboys.

Sunday started off with a delicious meal of barbecue, fried chicken and the trimmings. Then at 1:30, the program began. From then on there was music for everyone to enjoy and dance to.

I know that everyone is proud of their new lodge hall, I know I am. Let's put forth a special aim to keep our new lodge hall, SPJST No. 25, in perfect shape for everyone to enjoy. OK? We ,discussed having a Christmas party on December 10th. There will be a supper and, instead of exchangin,g gifts, we decided to play games. After the meeting was over, everyone enjoyed refreshments which consisted of sandwiches, cookies, potato chips, cakes, cupcakes and soda pop.

At the District VI meeting, Taiton had a country store where pillows and arts and crafts were sold. The people who participated in the district meeting received $2. They sang "Kumbaya" and "America the Beautiful." Everyone had refreshments after the meeting.

called to order by the president, Glen Kahanek. The pledge was led by Maurice Dluhos. The prayer was led by Diane Diuhos. There were no minutes because of the absence of the secretary. The treasurer's report was given.

Funeral services for Bother Fojtik were held Tuesday, October 19, at 2 p.m, , at Holy Cross Catholic Church in 13,ay .City. Interment was in Roselawnlyfemorial Park in Van Vleck. Taylor Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Praha, Texas on the 4th day of July, 1893, he was a retired carpenter, and lived 32 years at Van Vleck. He was our SPJST lodge member for 48 years, and was a good member.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sophie Fojtik of Van Vleck; a son ,Victor Fojtik of Houston; six daughters, Mrs. Jim (Bessie) Sindel, Mrs. Eddie (Gertrude) Tallas of Van Vleck, Mrs. Joe (Edna) Matula, of West Columbia. Mrs. Frank (Sophie) Biezenski, Mrs. W. C. (Evelyn) Schmalriede, and Mrs. Murl (Joise) Warren, all of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Eastman, and Mrs. Frances Eastman of Cedar Lane; four brothers, Ignac of Beasley, Albert of New York, Phillip of Schulenburg, and Edwin of East Bernard; 15 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

MIKESKA, who passed away in Waco Monday, Cctober 25, 1971 as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident in Waco.

Funeral services were held in the Seaton Brethren Church with Rev. Albert Michalik officiating. Interment was Wednesday, October 27 in the Seaton Cemetery.

Brother Mikeska had lived most of his life in the Red Ranger Community and was engaged in farming. He also had been employed at the Veterans Administration Center in Temple the past 16 years. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Surviving are, his wife, Mrs. Lola Mikeska.; a daughter, Cathy, and three sons, Mike, Patrick and Johnnie Mikeska, all of Rt. 1, Rogers, Texas; three brothers, Joe Mikeska of Dallas, John J. Mikeska and W. E Mikeska, both of Temple, and four sisters, Mrs. Liilie Hrachovy of Cameron, Mrs. Annie Klecka of Buckholts, Mrs. Della McAlester of Grapeland and Mrs. Mildred Crawford of Dallas. He was a nephew of Mrs. Frances Mikeska of Taylor.

Activities planned include .statewide publicity through newspapers, magazines, radio, and television, bill bvards and special displays in supermarkets.

A speakers bureau will take the story to garden clubs, civic clubs, etc.

On the county level, the county judges have been asked to appoint a committee of local leaders to spearhead countywide observances of the special week. The purpose of all these activities is to "implant in the public mind a positive image of Texas agriculture by drawing attention to the abundance, quality, variety, and value of Texas agricultural products."

In pointing up the importance of the observance Chairman Scruggs said, "In this day and age of confusion and confrontation, drugs, pollution, etc., all of us tend to forget that through the unparalleled efficiency of agriculture, America is the best-fed, and at the least cost, of any nation in the world."

It's that week (Nov. 15-21) just before Thanksgiving when special emphasis is being placed on the blessings of the abundance of food and natural fibers that come from the farms and ranches of Texas.

"Texas Food and Fiber Abundance Week" represents a concerted effort on the part of virtually every segment of the vast agricultural industry to gain consumer appreciation for the abundance, quality, variety and value of Texas agricultural products.

Involved are, representatives of farm organizations, agri-business firms, commodity groups, federal and state government agricultural agencies and institutions, universities and their re-

Fresh Salesman Shopping for a studio couch, Myrtle followed the friendly salesman to an obscure nook at the back of the furniture store. Suddenly, while they were talking about fabrics, the salesman seized her in a violent embrace.

Myrtle was so outraged that she not only had the man fired but also sued the owner of the store for damages.

"This was clear case of assault and battery," she charged in court. "And every employer is responsible for the acts of his employees."

But the court disagreed and rejected her claim. The judge said the owner was not responsible for an act that was

18 o completely separate from the job of selling furniture.

This is a general rule of law, that an employer is not liable for an employee's personal misconduct outside the scope of his job. Thus, the owner of a bar was held not liable when a mischievous waiter gave a customer a painful hotfoot.

It is a different story, however, when the employee's duties do include a certain amount of physical contact With the public. Take this case: At a movie matinee, a noisy teenager was ejected from the theater by an irate usher. In doing so, the usher used considerable more roughness than Was necessary.

This time, when the teen-ager sued the management for damages, the court pointed out that policing the customers was part of the job of ushering. Even though the usher overdid it, the court said that the theater, as his employer, would have to pay damages.

Furthermore, certain employers may be held liable because of an extra duty they owe the public. For example, a railroad had to pay damages after an amorous conductor forced several kisses on a reluctant woman passenger.

To be sure, kissing passengers was not within the scope of a conductor's job. But the court said that the railpad, as a public carrier, owed an extra duty to protect its passengers from harm — a duty which in this case it had clearly not performed.

INTERNAL SECURITY — HOW'S YOURS? Your department of the interior — your mind and spirit — may be harassed by frustrations and revolts of its own. These disturbances, particularly in young people, can cause their numerous victims to participate in civil strife which is triggered and led by individuals or small groups whose motivations are more drastic and dangerous than their own.

Erupting with alarming frequency in cities and on college campuses, involvement in such riots by the larger number may be little more than venting the steam of one's own personal frustrations.

While external conditions such as

VESTNf social injustice and war may precipitate violent reaction, these are merely effects of the underlying cause. Inner conflict between our private spiritual and physical drives could be the real culprit. The confusion about the necessity of disciplining ourselves can open the door to the beast in any of us.

Helping us to begin to understand ourselves, Emanuel Swedenborg, the 18th century Swedish philosopher, scientist, and theologian, summed up the oneness of things when he observed that man is an immortal spirit who has a body; a soul which animates an otherwise inert physical organism his earthly body.

Elaborating on this conviction, Dr. Robert H. Kirven, minister, writer, and editor of church publications, recently wrote: "Man is spirit — not will be — and he has a body; he is not imprisoned by it, nor limited by it, but it is a necessary aspect of a crucial stage in his personal development. The spirit and body make one man, living one life in one world that is both natural and spiritual in its make-up."

The goal and business of our physical life, he pointed out, is the transformation of our inherited egos into something more compatible with our spiritual essence. Swedenborg called this concept regeneration — self discipline and fighting temptations. Violent behavior can be a way of succumbing to them.

Dr. Kirven continues with an annlogy to a coin. A coin has two sides; in most cases they are not alike, and in any case they are not the same. You cannot look at one side of a coin and say "'This is what the coin really is; the other side does not count, or is not as important." Moreover, you cannot have a coin that does not have another side.

"The coin I am talking about is life," writes Dr. Kirven, "and one side is what we call 'physical', 'material' or `natural': the other side is what Swedenborg and much of the hebrewchristian tradition calls 'spirituals" Arising out of selfish dissatisfactions, temptation is 'derision between two conflicting desires, the material and the spiritual. Psychologists term this the integration of the personality. Man regresses when he submits, but rises into a higher level of life when he fights these weaknesses.

The world, good or bad, mirrors the spiritual state of mankind. Thus inner

Man's external actions will be directed towards others in a spirit of true charity and love only when he recognizes that all truth and good flow from the Divine, to whom he must look for the will and understanding to overcome the evils within himself.

Helen Keller offers sound advice in her book My Religion for those harassed by internal conflict:, "Truly I have looked into the very heart of darkness, and refused to yield to its paralyzing influence, lit in spirit I am one of those who walk the morning : . . It is by fighting limitations, temptations, and failures that we reach our highest possibilities," Can the revolutions and riots afflicting our society be alleviated in our lifetime? The effort is our reason for li ving. Each individual must work towards this voal by himself.

The material-spiritual gap will be closed only through this difficult process of regeneration. As Swedenborg so aptly stated: "Thought from the eye closes the understanding, but thought from the understanding opens the eye" (Swedenborg's Divine Love and Wisdom).

Letos vystupovaly na ge soubory pisni a tonal hlavne pri slavnostnich akcich k 50. vYroei.

Ureitym vyyrcholenint sezeny byl celostatni festival folklernich soubort, kterY se konal 17. — 21. zati v Popradu. Z 57 eeskYch a 28 slovenakYch souborti bylo vybrano po deseti ApiekovYch skupinach. V CSR se k soutai silo mnohem vice souborn ne2 na Slovensku a neni jiste zanedbatelne, ze ye srovnani s rokem 1965 vzrostl v chach a na Morave poeet souborn lidovYch pisni a tancii asi a Ctvrtinu.
