FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Dedication of Lodge 25, Ennis — the formal opening of the new lodge home on Highway 34 East in Ennis will be held on November G and 7, it has been announced by the local ledge president, Johnie Hrabina. The flag and building dedication will convene at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, followed by open house and dancing in the evening. Sunday, there will be a building-benefit dinner open to the public, to be followed by a program and dancing will be the concluding entertainment of the occasion. The members of Lodge 25 are still accepting contributions and any amount will still be greatly appreciated. Details concerning the program will be announced later.

Dedication for Lodge 40, Hillje — preparations are still underway for the official announcement by Brother Paul Sablatura. In response to the letters, phone calls and personal inquiries, especially those from Lodges 0 and 130, parents and youth leaders, about the delay in publishing the royalty pictures: At the YAD Rayalty contest in Houston September 12th, your editor spoke to Brother Janousek concerning the pictures. He advised me that a commercial photographer would take the "official" photos, the same as had been arranged for by SL President Morris and himself the year before in Temple.

He stated that I would receive the photos. As we know, by the letters in

the Vestnik, Bro. Janousek was asked to resign a few days after our conversation. On October 1, Brother Morris called me and stated that the proofs from the developer in Houston had arrived and that he would make the selections and return the proofs and then it would take about ten days to process them. Therefore the pictures should be here soon. We, of course, regret this prolonged delay, which does not do justice to our youth.

Parents have many dreams for their children. One is that their youngsters will be bright enough to win an allexpense-paid college education. However, as brilliant as they may be, chances are that even a scholarship won't be sufficient to cover the full cost of a college education.

The all-expense-paid scholarship is no longer in vogue. Colleges are now offering combinations of grant-andloan or grant-loan-job arrangements.

And the grant or scholarship portion is shrinking as more students seek financial assistance.

Thus parents Who are conscientiously planning for their children's education have good reason to be worried about how they will meet the spiraling costs of college training.

Fortunately, there are several ways to reduce expenses, suggests the Ins-

For instance, although many people think that youngsters get more out of attending college away from home, remember that living expenses are often a major part of the cost. If your child can attend a nearby college and live at home it will save a great deal of money. New colleges and branches of state universities are springing up all the time, which increase the likelihood of having a college in close proximity to your home.

Relatively inexpensive schools Such as community colleges have burgeoned throughout the country. Many are twoyear institutions, with regulas college courses from which a students an later transfer to a four-year college. State and city colleges and universities are generally less expensive than private schools, although some smaller private colleges are worth checking out.

There are many methods of borrowing or saving money for a college education. Loan arrangements can often be made directly through a college or there is the possibility of an installment loan through a bank in your community, Regular 'savings, begun when a youngster is in his early years, is another answer. So are investments, provided of course that they appreciate in value as hoped for by the family.

Life insurance provides another means to assure college funds for children. One approach is for the father to have a straight life or other cash value type of policy whose proceeds are earmarked for a child's education, if he should die. The policy would accumulate cash values that could help with college financing if the family head lives.

President Bartek appointed the following members to serve on the nominating committee: Jerry Valcaar, chairman, Louis Marek and John Coufal, Jr. I would like to take this opportunity to announce that our very first president of Lodge 87, Joe Zvolanek, Sr., was honored to be "King for the Day"

at the 31st American Czech Day, 1971, at the State Fair of Texas. He received a beautiful gold trophy for being the oldest male member at the fair; he is 88 years of age. Mr. Zvolanek and his wonderful wife, Marie, arrived at the fair in the early morning and remained all day arid she stated that her husband was happy as he could be and not at all tired when they arrived home. It is great that Mr. and Mrs. Zvolanek can participate in these nice activities. We do enjoy their presence so very much at our lodge meetings. They are both an inspiration to all who know and love them!

At this writing Mrs. Milton (Martha) Zavodny is reported to still be in the intensive care unit at Scott and White Hospital. She has been very ill and all Of us have been concerned about her. Our prayers and thoughts are for her to have a very speedy and complete recovery.

That's about all the news I will try to have a little more to write about in my next letter.

LODGE NO. 4, IIALLETTSVILLE

Dear Members, Lodge No. 4 met on Sunday, October 10th. President Erwin Holy called the meeting to order, followed by the pledge of allegiance led by Marcie Holy.

A resolution of sympathy was read for our departed brother, Ed Chovanetz.

Assistant Secretary Helen Zabransky read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved.

Treasurer Johnnie Zak gave a financial report on our fin-I-lily day dinner.

Sister Leona Miculka, youth leader, said that the youth club is planning to take part in the program at our District VI meeting on Nov. 7. The youth will also have a program for the mother lodge at their November meeting.

Sister Miculka also mentioned that the November and December birthdays will be honored at the next meeting.

It was announced that the next meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and there will be election of officers .

Premium refund checks were given out and the meeting adjourned.

The afternoon was spent in playing games and in conversation. Refreshments and lunch were served.

REMINISCING

The other day as I was cleaning out my bookshelves, I ran across an English play, "Hullabaloo." It brought back memories of days gone by when we were presenting plays, both in Czech and English and producing beautiful operettas — at least three a year.

This particular play, "Hullabaloo" had been played on Broadway for a number of years. It was a hilarious comedy and our editor of the Vestnik, Brother Rudy Sefcik, and I played the comedy parts, he being the freckled-faced, barefoot country boy, and. I, the country girl with pigtails, pantaloons, and high-button shoes. We really romped through that play.

This brought back memories of still another era, when our lodge was still in its infancy. In those days we had the pick Of the crop, so the members formed a dramatic club and also a choral club. Many of those fine and distinguished actors and musicians have passed on but we shall always remember them for their brilliant performances.

There was Joe Kalousek ® his portrayal of Havlicek is unforgettable.

Then there was Joe Anton, who could be a typical W. C. Fields in one play and A princely nobleman in the next.

He was an experienced actor, having played on the New York and Chicago stages. His sideline in show business was that of a magician, and besides acting, he would entertain his audiences with his magical tricks. The decision to make this performance of "Muziky, Muziky" the last appearance at this time was made because of the generally unknown and unpublicized endless work and responsibilities we have with this large scale production, and also because of some technical difficulties.

We received letters, requests, and comments suggesting an English translation of this operetta and other projects, so that these could be enjoyed by the whole SPJST membership, young and old, most of /horn, born in America, have difficulby understanding the Czech language. For this reason an English dialogue for "Muziky, Muziky" was recently completed, retaining all the beautiful songs of the folklore and the popular songs Of the operetta. These will be sung in the Czech language together with the beautiful choral arrangements which you applauded so enthusitistically as performed by the special chorus of villagers assembled and trained especially for this production. If a cast can be assembled of actors-singers, perhaps it may be possible next year to fulfill the requests for presentations of this operetta with the English dialogue. The cast of the beautifully harmonized singers of the special chorus and the very effective dancers of this production will continue and remain the same in the future productions of both English and Czech presentations.

So, if you don't want to miss this year's final performance, mark your calendar and come to Lodge No. 29 in Taylor on October 31st at 2' p.m., when the whole cast will again bring you the best performance they are able to accomplish, for your entertainment. You will be glad you came and don't forget to bring your Englishspeaking friends because there will be a complete English synopsis of the play in every program.

The show will again open with a garland of melodies from the operetta written and arranged in a special concert overture for the organ by our music director. With our musical director's permission, I would like to share with you the lyrics of a new song Brother John J. Pech wrote and dedicated to the folklore of all people and copy of Which he gave us in our last rehearsal.

Since our operetta "Muziky, Muziky" ,deals with the folklore of the lands of the Czech Crown: Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia (joined in 1914 by Slovakia, under the official name of Czechoslovakia) from whence came our pioneer forefathers, who established the great SPJST and many other fraternal societies came; to these founders, of our SPJST, Brother John J. Pech wrote and dedicated the following touching Czech lyrics of this song, perhaps so very pertinent now with this last presentation.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, Now that we don't have to worry about dry and hot weather, we may as well start getting the blankets out and ,see to it that the heating units are put in working order. Especially due to the fact that cool weather is working down our way earlier than ever. On October 10th, the temperature dropped to a record low for that date, a cool 45 degreed, and the squirrels are unusually active and busy putting away nuts in their hiding places. Nevertheless, how wonderful that we have the evolution of seasonal changes; wouldn't it be monotonous and dreary to have one continuous season, year after year?

Coming events at Lodge 88 — Saturday October 23rd, we have a dance to Lee Roy Matocha; Sunday, October 24th, we have our big annual Czech Day, with a good country-style chicken dinner served from 11:30 on, and I am sure that the good sisters will again (please do) bring some of those good baked goodies. From 12:30 to 2:30 we will have a live radio broadcast over KFRD, plus good singing. There is also a promise of some good game entertainment out patio way. The Birthday Club Sisters will again supervise a bazaar booth. Some of our special guests will be Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris, and our invitation certainly goes to all the other dignitaries as well as rank and file members and guests. Locally we have a promise of having Mayor Louis Welch, Bishop Morkovsky, and possibly Rev.. Nutria from the Houston Brethren Church.

The mayor will proclaim this day: "Czech Day in Houston." There will be a short program after radio time, and presentation of plaques to honored members. At 5 p.m., we will have the grand march of Czech costumes, so ladies get them all ready and let's strut, right from the grand march, followed by a free dance for the evening, to Clarence Baca's versatile

On Saturday, October 30th, the Vrazels Band will be back for a good polka dance, and they have all the other numbers too, to get everyone on the dance floor.

Remember social night every 'Thursday, supper at 6; games at 8 p.m. There will again be a free movie shown on Friday night, October 29th. This movie is in three parts, half hour each, of Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Spain.

These movies are very Interesting, so take advantage of them.

News and comments ® Pearl and Ernest Hanka attended the National Fraternal Congress in Denver, Colorado. Brother Ernest gave a report on it at our meeting. When they concluded their visit to Denver, he still had a few green backs in his pocket, so, with Pearl's coaxing, they flew to Las Vegas.

Looks as though Ernest didn't know their rules and regulations too well, but anyway, they did' not have to hitch-hike back home (luckily he had purchased round-trip tickets).

Joe Elzner and Jene Janca took in a dove hunt near Eagle Pass. I don't know how many they got, but Joe brought back a bruised, blue arm on his shoulder from a gunkick. Ed Kadlecek, A. J. and Gary Zalesky were left out of the "thank you, for setting up the chairs" at our movie, and Ed also failed to get recognition for his 39th birthday last month.

The Blumes dance was just a big crowd of people having fun. Among the Bay City Dutchmen's dance crowd were a few happy celebrants. Marian and L. A. Mikes drank to their 33rd wedding anniversary, while Rudy and Angeline Miculka celebrated their 34th. wedding anniversary. Erlene and Quentin Hoffmann celebrated getting one year older; we wish you all many more such occasions. Tanta and John Hilsher, Gladys and Milton Eloff, Almeda and Franklin Bravenec, Lora Bell, Royal Warnasch and Ornel and Karl Hassebrock went to see the TexasOklahoma game in Dallas. After the game, they took in the Sokol dance in Dallas; I cannot blame them because sometimes you need something to calm your nerves after a game like that.

On Sunday, October 10th, many relatives and friends witnessed the beautiful wedding of Cynthia Gay Dutka and Ronald Lynn Havemann. They were united in holy matrimony in the St. Charles Borromeo Church. Cynthia

Wednesday, October 20, 1971 is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete B. Dutka, and Ronald is the son of Gladys and Warren Havemann.

The reception, dinner and dance were held at the Lodge 88 Chandelier Ballroom.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith are the proud parents of a baby boy, named James; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fusig, Jr., are the proud grandparents, while Brother and Sister Joe Fusig, Sr., are the beaming great-grandparents, — it's their first. How time does fly! Mr. and Mrs. Jeral 0. Gillen are the proud parents of a baby girl, named Deborah Ann, born on September 9th; she is already signed up to make the Gillen family 100 per cent SPJST.

On the sick list are Sister Mary Faltysek and Brother Otto Mikeska, who are both in hospitals. Betty Poston, Mary Johnson, John Mikolas and Agnes Miculka are all among us, but still not jumping too high.

We have also lost several members lately. They are Brother Garnett Frazier, Sister Marie Bily and Sister Julia Zajicek. Sister Zajicek passed away while visiting her brother in Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Zajicek; two sons, Bobby Lane, and Larry Joe; one sister, Mary Kalousek and three brothers, Andrew, Anton and B. C. Kalousek. Her sister, Mary Kalousek wishes to thank each and everyone for their acts of kindness, especially the ladies who prepared food. for the family and out-of-town people who came to the funeral.

Dear Members and Friends, Our regular meeting opened at 2 P.m. October 10th. The pledge of allegiance was recited by all present and we all stood in silent tribute in memory Of Sister Agnes Neuman. Our sympathy goes to the bereaved family.

The minutes of' the previous meeting were read and accepted as read. A report was given by the treasurer, Adolph Mucka.

We were pleasantly surprised by a visit from Mrs. Evelyn Mikeska, District V Organizer. She pointed out many important things we should be thinking about before the coming convention. She also mentioned about her father and her husband being ill. We sincerely hope that they are recuperating fast and soon will be well again.

There was one conversion from juvenile term to adult and that was Wanda Elaine Oberhoff.

Get-well cards were mailed to the following ailing members: Sister Vlasta Stransky, Frances Macek, Louise Lubojacky, Frances Palat, and to Brothers Joe Michalec, Tom Kolaja, and Arnold Reichle. Our wish for all these good members is to get well soon. Just this morning I have learned that Brother J. J. Tejkl had an emergency operation but is doing as well as could be expected. We are very happy he's doing well. Brother Tom, Kolaja, however, is still confined to the hospital and may be there several days before he will be able to come home.

Auditing of the books was set for October 22 at 7 o'clock. Refund checks were given out. The secretary would appreciate it if more members would come to the meeting to pick up their refund checks. The door prize was won

by Brother John Kalisek.

Sister Bryson gave a brief report on the Royalty Contest held last month at Lodge No. 88 in Houston. She said it was very good and that it is regrettable that more of our members did not attend to enjoy it.

On September 29, another fine couple, and good members of our lodge Sister and Brother Charlie Horelica celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary. Congratulations are extended to this fine couple by the entire membership and may they be able to reach their 50th anniversary in good health and happiness is our wish.

Thank-you letters and cards were received and read from Brother Sablatura, Brother Joe Michalec and the family of Sister Agnes Neuman.

Our November meeting will be rather a lengthy one because this will be our annual meeting. It will start at 1 p.m. instead of 2, as usual. I'm sure you all know November is the month when we elect all the officers of the lodge for the coming year, and this year we shall also elect the delegates to the 1972 convention to be held in Houston sometime in June. This is an important meeting so please make an extra effort to attend.

Dear Members, Our regular meeting was held October 5th and all officers were present, with the exception of our flag bearer.

The guest visitors were Supreme Lodge Vice President Joe B. Hejny, District V Director Ernest Hanka and District Organizer Evelyn Mikeska.

A motion was made and seconded to have every other Saturday ® alternate Saturdays — as family nights. It passed. We would like to have more members to attend the socials. We also had a very nice turnout at our last meeting.

October 24th is the date, and 10:30 a.m. is the time. I hope that all members and friends of District VII are planning to attend the district meeting at Lodge , 56-79, Corpus Christi.

Craft is being planned for all the youth who attend. Try to arrive by 10:30 so we can get started on our craft before lunch. All those who were at camp can assist in the teaching of the other youth. We want everyone to take home a finished craft item. Be there, you are needed.

The next thing for the youth will be the youth program. This will be in the afternoon as soon as the business meeting is over. You will be the entertainment for the day, so let's get a good show lined up. Many of the people will have traveled for miles, so let's put on a good show for them. Sign up with your youth leader so we will know what you are going to .do.

Most important to our Youth Department is the cake walk. This is being sponsored by the district, therefore it needs all of us to be a success.

Our problem seems to always be money, now we have a good chance to do something about this. Let's all bake a cake and come to the meeting. We will have a real good time and the

LODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Members, On spending an evening at our new lodge hall one becomes aware of the many people involved in its building.

It is amazing how many different trades and talents our members have.

Seen on the scene, doing what they are skilled in, we find a very long list.

From the beginning the financial and building committee had to lay the groundwork for membership approval Of what the new hall would be like.

Heading the committee is Chairman G. Louis Kudrna; Edwin Trojacek, cochairman; Neicylene Vitovsky, secretary, and Ernest Haskovec, treasurer.

They carried the load of planning and procedure. The funding committee, headed by Alvin Nesuda, consists of Antone Cikanek, Bob Trojacek, Al Furecky, George Trojacek, Tony Vitovsky, Francis Rogala, Edwin Haskovec, Joe Martinek, Milton Martinek, Johnnie I. Krajca, Marvin Martinek, Joe Ben Macalik, Jerry Venable, Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy Kudrna and Joe Jansa has a job to do that will continue for a long time. The kitchen committee, headed

by Dorothy Kudrna, planned the work area for convenient serving of food.

In charge of general construction we find Antone Cikanek, working tirelessly. Helping him in general carpentry as their time permitted were Joe Martinek, Charlie Trojacek, Milton Nesuda, Joe Trojacek, Frank Gurecky, all working many long hours. Ronnie Vitovsky has spent as much time as anyone seeing about many details and presently he is completing the construction of a building to house the

9 barbecue pits, donating not only the material, but the labor required. That is great. Another steady man who spends nearly enough time in the new building to require an ID in his own home, located a fine set of booths for the bar center, and they were purchased very reasonably. He has spent over twenty hours in reconditioning and upholstering them. Besides this he has looked after the needs of the area and kept supplies available.

As contracts were let, we found our air-conditioning and plumbing contract let to our member Edwin Trojacek, an installation that is now almost complete. Another member/ Edwin Haskovec, is a local cabinetmaker and his fine, work shows up beautiully in our spacious kitchen. Not only this, but the generosity of the use of his manufacturing plant and equipment for the assembly-line construction of fifty banquet tables by a bevy of members has meant much to the lodge.

Presently our floor work' is nearly complete. Donating labor for the tile laying, we found Adolph Zaidle, Adolph Jr., and Raymond busy more nights than we can count. Let us be reminded that all these people are working people who come to work these extra hours to see a hall built. How proud we are of what they are doing!

For instance, our local patrol was investigating why someone was waiting around the hall in the wee hours of the night. It turned out to be Ronnie and his crew starting on the subfleoring for the dance floor. That happened to be their "off" hours from their jobs.

The ceiling contract went to our neighbor, Bernard Betik. He has been doing a beautiful job, with the help of his young sons. His suggestions and cooperativeness have given us a fine appearing building. The walls, covered in a fine looking accoustical material, the purchasing chore done by Sisters Louis) Kudrna, was installed by a bevy Dolfie Hrabina and Dorothy (Mrs. G. of couples: the G. Louis Kudrnas, Charlie Dubecs, Antone Cikaneks, Ernest Haskovecs, Bob Trojaceks, and Sisters Elizabeth Moucka and Dorothy (this is Miss) Kudrna.

Even the youth club under the leadership of Dorothy Prachyl entered the picture putting 'in many hours of clean-up. Since school has started they have let up on this never-endin; chore.

10 Some of the contracts not in the SPJST family were awarded to good tradesmen who have cooperatively orked toward completion. Woodwork finishing done by Dick Harrison and Elliott lends a fine warmth to the interior. Clay tile work was done by Jack Moore of Kaufman. Roberts Electric is doing all the electric installa, 'Aim. They have cooperatively worked in the changes needed to complete the work. Of special note and adding interest are custom-designed chandeliers and entrance light fixtures by Wescraft of Dallas and manufactured

by Ruhl Manufacturing here in Ennis.

Another unusual feature seen from the entrance is the panoramic landScape oil painting on the dining area wall. Dolfie Hrabina and Wilma Nesuda estimate there were 110 hours spent in the painting of this four by seventeen foot composite scene depicting well known areas of Czechoslovakia. You may note a familiar area if you have traveled or lived in the old country.

Thus, as we visit the hall we find not only workers but visitors. Among them, a group from Dallas from KJT, who are planning to build and were well impressed. Then a busload of touring folks from Chicago stopped by.

They could hardly believe that our locality has three fine new halls supporting a Czech heritage, and that young people like Ronnie Vitovsky still fluently speak the Czech language.

Another visitor, Agnes Houdek has been our constant publicity woman, and we certainly appreciate it.

We now come to the helm of our ship — our lodge president. Johnnie F. Hrabina accepted the presidency one year ago knowing that there was a big job ahead. He not only had to oversee the entire activity handling decisions that were made by the various segments and the membership, but taking care of the indecisions to speed things along. Using his purchasing sources of H&H Hardware, he found needed material through many calls, trips, and pleadings with suppliers. He searched out the best at the least cost. All this at wholesale has meant a better building at a smaller figure. Frequent consultations with the building committee, the best decisions followed, he along -with the building chairman, G. Louis Kudrna, have spent many hours of work and concern. Never underestimate the power of a woman for behind each of

Dolfie and Dorothy have been along the entire long road beside them, and we not only owe these people our thanks for carrying out the wishes of the membership but seeing to it that the job was done, that every nail and screw was in place and the completed building would meet with our approval.

All the hours of work have carried out the plan. Now it is up to the membership to obitain full use of the hall. Much cooperation and many more donations can be our part. Much labor can be enjoyable if we realize that cooperative effort has brought us to the "Day of Dedication." Be there in full force. This belongs to you!

Dear Readers, We still need more items for our Library, Archives and Museum to make these departments as outstanding as some of the Texas museums are: We, in our SPJST, should make ours even more outstanding than other museums over the state.

I will be at the District; Three meetdng in Dallas on the 24th, and '1 will be happy to accept anything you can bring to the meeting for our fine SPJST LAM Department. There are many things among us in our homes that should be placed in the l,-.JPJ-ST Library, Archives, and Museum. 1 have recently straightened out my garage and have found a number of interesting items for both our library and museum and many of you, if you will just check through your garages, storerooms, and closets, will find items that you didn't even know you had that would be interesting for our LAM Department. Check through your storage places and sort out the items and bring them to the District 111 meeting for placing in our LAM De7 partment here in Temple. You will be glad you did when you visit this department and see them on display giving you full credit.

Up to now we have had visitors from 16 states and two foreign countries and all have left with praise of our LAM Department and we will keep • adding and improving the .departanent until such time as it will DO the most outstanding in Texas and with your help we can accomplish this much sooner.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Current Report Dear Members and Friends: I am enjoying being back at the office and working with my colleagues.

We have been working pretty hard here putting together our recommendations for by-law changes and recommendations. These will appear in the Vestnik in due time. We know the ByLaw Committee and the delegates will give them their open-minded consideration.

My traveling activities are beginning to pick up a little bit. My trip to the District I fall meeting at New Tabor a couple of' weeks ago was my first official trip to an SPJST activity. I enjoyed being with the members there again and the visitors that were there.

Three of us Supreme Lodge officers attended that meeting and gave infor-

mative reports on SPJST official business. The youth department of some of the lodges in the district put on a fine program, but I excused myself prior to it to DYD Alvin Vavra and District President Carlson Jakubik.

I am happy to report that our Vice, President, Brother Joe B. Hejny, was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Fraternal Congress for a two-year term. We are proud to have the SPJST represented and we know that Brother Hejny will bring our Society honor in fulfilling his duties.

Brother Sid Pokladrft was elected to the Executive Board of the Fraternal Section. Incidentally, next year's NFC will be held in Dallas, and we are all looking forward to attending that event.

We were also represented in Denver by Mr. Richard Urbis of Robstown, Lodge No. 117, who gave a splendid performance on the piano with two selections, Chopin's "Fantasy Impromptu" and Lecouna's "Malaguena." He did our Society much credit in appearing and playing at the Fraternal Spectacular in Denver, and we are grateful to him and his mother for making the trip, under the auspices of the SPJST. His picture and article will appear in the Vestnik soon.

Attending these conventions (also the convention of the newly-named Western Fraternal Life Association formerly Western Bohemian Fraternal Association) is a valuable source of information for all of those who attend, and we always learn by attending such meetings of other fraternal organizations.

We will soon be holding our Texas Fraternal Congress in Abilene, October 21, 22, and 23, and some of us are planning to attend that. We will be represented there by delegates and two talent numbers, a couple from the Temple area, Lodge No. 47, and the other one is from Lodge No. 130 in Dallas.

Two lodges, who have recently built new lodge halls, are planning grand openings — Lodge No. 25 Ennis on November 6 and 7, and Lodge No. 40 Hillje who has not, as of this date, set the date of their opening. We hope many of you will be able to attend one or both of these functions.

LODGE. NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members, The announcement that our State Youth Director James Janousek had resigned came as quite a shock to me.

I have worked closely with James and his wife, Kathy, through the years, and I know of the many countless hours both of them have devoted to our youth activities. I have worked the District II and many other camps with James, and I have seen him up at 6 a.m. and he stayed with the youth till midnight. I often thought of the Many countless hours, he put in his day's work. No wonder he got sick; no human could keep going like he did without getting sick, but he loved the youth and his job and never complained.

I think our Fraternal Order helps others when they are down, and I think the least we could do is stand by him while he is ill. Surely our Society could find someone to take his job

Dear Readers, The East Bernard SPJST Youth Club held its last meeting on October 3rd, in the East Bernard SPJST Hall, beginning at 2 p. m.

The meeting was called to order by our club President, Jeanne Hlozek. She led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club Pledge. Next our secretary, Billy Hlczek,jailed the roll. We were short one ember of having a perfect attendance. The secretary then read the minutes from the previous meeting and they stood approved as read. Our Treasurer, Gregory Valigura reported our bank balance.

I explained to the youth about the program we will be presenting on November 7, in Taiton, for the District VI fall meeting. We will have practice on October 30 and Novemiler 6 at 2 p. m., at the East Bernard SPJST Hall. Be sure to be on time and know your parts.

The youth meeting was then adjourned. Following the meeting, the youth made door stops out of old catalogs.

until he was able to return to work. I know how much James loved his work and was interested in our youth throughout the state. Anyone could see that by the way our youth activities and number of youth members have increased since he was in office. I do not think the SPJST can find anyone to replace James or to fit into his shoes. I only wish something could be done to help him. Anyway, James,

you will be missed by all the youth members and youth leaders. Thank you for all the help you gave our youngsters, and myself. We also wish you a lot of good health and the best in the future.

Our club is busy painting litter cans, which we will donate to our lodge, the teens are fixing and painting our barbecue pit. We will have a Halloween party and wiener roast. The children

Dear Readers, The youth club held their meeting October 3rd. We had a good attendance. We had a guest speaker and his wife of the McLennan County Blood Center. Mr. Mefford showed us an interesting film which we all enjoyed very much.

We also had Brother and Sister Alvin Nesuda as our visitors. They each gave a talk. Brother Nesuda initiated our new members. We are always glad to have you visit our lodge. Come back again.

The youth club had their game party after the meeting. They did real good moneywise and also working. All you boys and girls did a fine job. You will be in charge again next meeting.

LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers, A long-planned fun project was realized recently when the Hillje Club and La Salle Club joined forces and fulfilled a long-planned trip to AstroWorld. We missed going on a beautiful day since ours was cool and rain, but the togetherness of the two clubs made it a day of sunshine. It was great and I feel certain both clubs enjoyed the trip equally. Our sincere thanks to the Hillje Club for planning the events of the day.

Members of our club to make the trip included Anita and Molly Ward; Diane, John and Mary Anderswi; Melany, David, sand Tammy Drastata; Diane and Keith Dyson; Larry, Don, Jeanette, and Steve Hlavaty; Janice Henderson; Leona Raybon; Sally Sembera; and Marilyn Vincik. Wednesday, October 20, 1971 LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear District II SPJST Members, I would like to express my sincere appreciation, First, to my mother lodge, Lodge No. 47, for the great honor given me when they selected me to 'represent them as queen. Their support and good wishes enabled me to go to win the title of District II queen.

The generous cash award given to me during the local talent day was also greatly appreciated.

Next, my thanks go out to all the District II members for their support and kindness shown to me. I m very proud to have represented oucldistriet in the State Queen Contest. During the day, I was pleased to notice several of my lodge and district members, who had made the long trip to Houston, to see the competition. My only regret is not having won a title for all the people who were behind me.

Dear Readers, On October 10th, we went to the Fort Concho Museum.

First, we had our meeting and discussed old business and then new business. We talked about a rummage sale for the old business but didn't decide when to have it. For new business we talked about horseback riding, for November, and our fl , for December.

After we adjourned the meeting, we toured the museum. EVerybody thought that it was very interesting. The boys thought the animal and bird sections were very interesting and the girls and ladies thought that the dresses were pretty that were on display.

After the club was through touring, we went to the Dairy Queen.

Under old business was about charity. Each member should bring some type of item for charity to the next meeting.

The new business was about the district meeting, which will be November 7 in Taiton. The mothers and members are asked to make pillows, stuffed animals, or any item l they wish to make, and bring it to the district meeting at Taiton. These will be sold to earn money for our club.

Every member is also reminded to pay their dues. The door prize winners were Rosann Dorotik, Larry Krpec, Jean Ann Dorotik and Chris Krpec.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee, in behalf of the entire membership of Lodge No. 17, New Tabor, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, CHRISTINA MARY CHARANZA, who passed away Saturday, September 11, 1971 at the Sweetbriar Nursing Home in Brenham, Texas.

Sister Charanza was born April 27, 1892 in the Prairie Dale Community and lived her entire life in Burleson County.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening, flowers, and cooking. She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Frenstat.

Surviving are her husband, John Charanza; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Supak, Mrs. Rosie Greater, both of Caldwell, Mrs. Christine Hovadik and Mrs. •uddie Gold, both of Houston; one sister, Mrs. Adele Hudec of Caldwell, 21 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Wednesday, October 20, 1971 She was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, three brothers, and two sisters.

Services were held Monday, September 13, at 1:30 p.m. from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at Frenstat with the Rev. Steve Paul Montenegro officiating. Burial was in the Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.

Karel Cerny se narodil v Brne pied prvni svetovou valkou jako nejmlac1iI ze etyr deti cukrare. Brzy se cella todina prestehovala do Prahy, Karel Cerny se vyueil mechanikem a ph zamostnani navaevoval kurs kresleni a ma° lovani na veeerni delnicke 'Skole. Pokusil se studovat na Ukrajinske akademil, musel toho vS'ak nechat z nanenich clUvodt. Ale nevzdal se. 0 rok pozdeji se zapsal na Akademii vytvarnych umeni ye Skole profesora Jakuba Obrovskeho. A stal se malirem. Uz od pood,tku jeho verejneho vystoupeni jej kritika prijimala jako vYrazneho, osobiteho malice. Nezklamal. Od skoneeni studii se natrvalo uvedl do eeskehe vYtvarneho deni opravdovosti toho, co namaloval.
