FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Saturday, August 14, a.m. — SL Vice President Joe B. Hejny called your editor and stated that he had been to Dallas to see SL President Morris in the hospital. He reported that President Morris was still in intensive care and that he was not permitted to visit with him. He said that Sister Morris had informed him that the operation was a success and that her husband was doing as well as could be expected. • • Our members are advised to please read the report of SYD Janousek in the youth section and also be sure to save •the map which is included. o • State YAD August 22 in Temple — Are you making plans to attend the State YAD at Temple High School Auditorium this year? Refer to the map in this issue. This is the climax of all youth activities for the entire year. There were lodge eliminations, followed by district contestants and eliminations and now the competition on the state level. The youth have all worked hard to get this far in the various contests. It is now up to the adults and parents to support this state function. First of all, let's be there. Secondly, give the contestants your careful and quiet attention. Let's not have the people in charge pleading repeatedly for your attention and silence.
WANT TO DRIVE, DEAR? When he asks me politely To get at the wheel Of his handsomely polished New automobile And he doesn't complain Of the signals I'm making Or growl at my turns or The chances I'm taking; When lie's sitting beside me, Almost contented, As though I can't possibly Damage or dent it Or bump it or scratch it Or scrape it or nick it — That is the day He has gotten a ticket. Why is the State YAD so important? The State YADs have always been of prime importance. Competitions, participation in the activities, for which they were justly known, social gatherings, opportunities to compare notes and learn to know each other better all acted as a cement to make the SPJST stronger. The enthusiasm and inspiration both working toward those happy days and as a long lasting aftermath had a value that could not have been secured in any other way. They were the spur to renewed beneficial activity.
The purpose of youth camp — The SPJST Youth Camp program aims to develop a well-rounded child by contributing significantly to his physical, mental and social growth. Educational experience in cooperative community living in the natural surroundings, good health through carefully planned activities, sufficient rest, good food, and wholesome companionship, are all offered to attending campers. Children receive experience in citizenship through democratic participation, in group living, decision making, planning and carrying out activities on his or her own level; experience and instruction through which he or she gains knowledge and skill necessary for their well-being. Your child has the opportunity to have all of this provided as long as he or she is a member of our Society. Through a summer camp which is sponsored by the SPJST, our children are brought closer together by Means of introducing fraternal spirit of brotherly and sisterly mixing together no matter what part of the State of Texas they are from. Although the youth camp days have come to a close for another year, the children who attended camp this year have reported having spent an enjoyable time and they are anticipating another year of exciting activities. This is when we owe the leaders a lot of gratitude for taking time out from
