Sunday, June 11 -- We attended the District V YAD which was hosted by Lodge 88, Houston and this lodge has naturally increased since the construction Of their new building and swimming pool; also one could not but notice the large increase of scheduled events on their bulletin board.

Since this was a district YAD, we found the children happy and with smiling faces. The program convened on time and nearly everyone was seated except the judges and tabidating committee, still working. The youth. presented their talent very well. The 120-craft entries were displayed beautifully, and the highlight of the evening was the royalty contest. Each contestant presented a sincere and fraternal speech; however, if they would have had more competition, it would have been more exciting. Of course, this being DYD Geraldine Mikolajewski's first YAD, there are always a few exceptions and she is trying hard to make the district activities successful.

Several of the district members have recently alluded to the situation regarding our YADs, more specifically, the scant attendance. At any given meeting, there are always good reasons why some people are unable to attend due to other obligations, ill-

Just a box of old-fashioned pictures Taken so long ago But in memory I can see again The friends I used to knout. ness , etc.; however, it must be stated in all candor that the participation and attendance at the YAD was not what it could have been. What is needed is a careful study of just why the situation is what it is. In any event, it should be pointed out at all levels, that these activities are vital to the members as well as to the Society as a whole.

Decisions are made in district meetings that affect all the members in that particular district. The districts represent a certain amount of autonomy granted to the districts. Unless we exercise that autonomy, the district

structure will fall into a state of ineffectiveness. It must be used to be effective. Your DYD definitely needs everyone's moral support to stimulate more interest and participation. Every district youth director devotes many unselfish hours making preparations for a YAD, nothing is more disappointing than a small attendance.

Of course, there is always a tomorrow to look forward to, so let us not falter or give up.

• Jealousy is the mark of the poor loser. It is the defense mechanism we hide behind to avoid facing up to the fact that we have lost. Jealousy is, especially, thwarted pride. Never be jealous of a person who moves ahead. He or she had what it takes. They generally deserve it, and probably sacrificed a great deal to accomplish a step forward. Remember, for every step up, you must give up something. Climb slowly and surely with grim determination and success will be yours.

• • Consistent readers of the Vestnik will notice that the names of the contributors to the paper are names of people who have long been in the habit of contributing to it. They are members who are doing their best to make the Vestnik serve its purpose.

VESTNiK Brother Jaroslav C. Kulharick, age 77, passed away June 18, 1971 in Waller County Hospital, Hempstead, Texas. Interment was held in Waller Catholic Cemetery, and Brother Kulhanek was a member of Lodgd Svatopluk No. 132, Waller.

Brother Emil Urbanovsky, a g e 63, passed away July 1, 1971 in Cameron.

Burial was held in Cook.'.; 1'01 1. Brethren Church Cemetery, and la' was a member of Ledge HozL y et No. 116, Cooks Point.

Brother Vince Mikulas, age 75, succumbed July 9, 197:1. in Temple. Brother Mikulas was buried in Ocher Brethren Cemetery, and he was a member of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. r.1 , Seaton.

District VII Director Joe Koliha, Jr., notified us that Brother J. L. (Johnny) Dornak of Jourdanton, Texas, age 58, Succumbed Friday, July 2, -1971, in a San Antonio hospital. He was a member of Lodge No. 78, formerly, and was a member of Lodge Progressive No. 168, Jourdanton. Funeral services were held Monday, July 5, 1971 in St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Jourdanton with interment in the church cemetery.

Miss Agnes (Anezka) Houdek, our valued Czech correspondent and friend, her brothers, William (Lodge 84) and Joe Houdek, all of Dallas, and Mrs. John Honza, of Ennis paid us a very nice (and too brief) visit Friday afternoon.

• Sister Elsie M. Chalupa, age 51, succumbed. July 1, 1971 in Temple. Burial was in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Taylor, Texas, and she was a member of Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor.

Interment was in the Snook Cemetery, Snook, Texas. Brother Skrabanek was a member of Lodge Slovan No. 9, Snook.

Especially, the older people who were born soon after the turn of the 20th century; can you remember? (If you do), you are as old or older than I; when all the travel was on foot. or by real, live horsepower,

It was about this time that science began to wake up and miraculous things began to liannen, Ttiat enabled our generation to witrieS,, the develops merit of ct-trs, radios, TVs, airplanes, etc., from tile early or experimental models to the present-day "tonder:machines." Of course, at tl'Int time, tile moon was considered completely out of reach of man, however, science moved rapidly forward and 'finally came the men Lien of a space program and the possibility of a trip to the moon. This was indeed a controversial probleirt fin many. Some faiths strictly forebade the probe into the heavenly region. In China or .1.m14 China, there was a sect. \y Inch reveared the moon as 'their God, therefore, they looked with horror on the first moon mission. In fact, they termed it the most impossible thing that a man ever attempted to accomplish; however, science moved ahead, made and perfected plans and the moon mission was a reality, accomplished by our astronauts.

Perhaps some day our younger generations will truly use it for honeymoon trips. Of course, the perfection of machines and ventures calls for errors and sacrifices and such was the case of three of our astronauts losing their lives in a moon mission capsule fire. The whole world felt the loss, and extended condolences; however, one country, also interested in the space program, according to a daily publication, took occasion to chide our government for needlessly sacrificing lives for useless projects. But, as it usually happens, things generally come back to us and so it did, to that particular country, they also sent three of their men into space and unfortunately, they lost their lives, too.

Although, it was very regrettable and sad for these dedicated me n to lose their lives, it may serve some. good purpose by setting an example, whereby the governments of all nations may realize the importance of cooperation and pooling of knowhow and research rather than criticizing.

Those on our sick list are Mrs. Marcella Zavodny, Jerry Cabla, Sr., who is in the VA Hospital, and Marvin Wilde who is also reported in the hospital at this writing. We wish them a very speedy and complete recovery. Wetwere sorry Marvin was unable to attend our picnic after working hard and preparing to make the barbecue. Thank you for your help. We all appreciated it very much.

We were happy to see Mollie Zavodny and Leona Schiller up and about after their recent hospital stay. May they continue in good health.

Our deepest sympathy is ,extended to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Groseclose, Jr., of Rosebud. Funeral for their baby daughter, Marsha Leigh, was held in Rosebud on July 10. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Herring of Lott and Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Groseclose, Sr.; of Fairmont, W. Va. May God comfort all of you during this time of great sadness.

Yours truly was elected as a new organizer for Lodge No. 24. I want all of you to know that I'll do the very best I can for our lodge and the SPJST. Also, during the meeting, reports were given by the chairmen of the ;kitchen committee, ticket committee and bar committee. We were pleased with their reports. We 'discussed purchasing lumber that was needed and mostly made last-minute plans for the annual picnic.

Congratulations to the new owners of the old Flag Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Luska. It's nice having them purchase the property and we thank them.

We would like to send out a big thank you also to Edwin and Nelda Marek for advertising our picnic in the Cameron Herald. That was very thoughtful of them.

Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. James Wayne Gidley who were married on July 10. Mrs. Gidley is the former Barbara Doskocil, daughter Of Mrs. Frank Doskocil of Cyclone.

New members accepted are Nancy Lynn Stefka, Carrie Ann Schiller, Lee Roy Henry Fuchs, Hank Lee Fuchs, and Joyce Roach. We are so happy to have these fine people join our growing lodge family. Come often and take part in our lodge activities.

The youth club members are planning a swimming party July 29, so you children get ready and mark that date on your calendar now so you won't miss it. I already have it marked on my calendar and if I'm able to go with my children, I'll probably be the first one to hit the water.

Our next regular monthly meeting will be on Sunday, August 8, at 2 p.m.

By now most all of you know that our annual picnic was held on Sunday, July 11. We had a swell attendance and would like to thank all of you for coming out and enjoying the day with us at Flag Hall. We had people from far and near and were happy to see all of you.

Those of you who helped work. prepare food or helped in anyway, for the picnic deserve more than we can offer. Without your cooperation and willingness to take part and help we could not have even started such a task. Everyone seems to have enjoyed the day. Thanks again to all , of you.

The next meeting will be held on the second Sunday, our regular date, at 2 p.m. Those members who get a card from the secretary informing them that their refund check has arrived, please attend our meeting to receive it, so that the secretary will not have to eventually return the checks to the Supreme Lodge.

The lodge wishes a complete recovery for Sisters Carolina Kostelnik and Anna Kocurek, and also for Brother Bohuslav Sebesta.

A lovely daughter was born to Sister Margaret Sury and her husband, Jimmy. Congratulations to the young parents and to the grandparents, Brother and Sister John Kalisek, and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Sury.

Jim Scoggins was the winning pitcher; he hurled a very fine and courageous game. He allowed 6 hits, 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Leading hitters were Wiley Beesley with a home run, a double and a sacrifice, Connie. Brennan with a double and a single, Albin Vrana and Lawrence Honza with singles, and Leonard Drozd with a walk. It was a wellplayed game, both offensively and defensively and we are real proud of the win.

We played our last league game Thursday night, July 15, agaiinst James Art Studio. The City ClOmpionship Playoffs will probably begin next week, either Thursday night, July 22, or Friday night, July 23. A meeting was held July 16 to finalize the playoffs.

Wednesday, July 21, 1071 Association, who in turn introduced Dr. Tom Denson, Dr. George Wahle, Jr., and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Simmons, all associated with King's Daughters Hospital in Temple. They are conducting a drive to secure one million dollars in pledges so they can start construction on a new 3.5 million dot'kir hospital. Dr. Denson showed slides and explained all aspects of the new structure. We thank them for visiting our meeting and hope their drive is successful.

Other visitors at our meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Othold and sons, James and Kenneth of Lodge 88, Houston. The boys visited the youth club.

Sister Mihatsch is looking for an assistant to help her, so if you enjoy children and working with them, volunteer your services.

Are you making plans to attend Lodge 47's annual picnic Sunday, July 25th? If you are hoping to spend a Sunday afternoon filled with fun you must come to Seaton Star Hall on that day. Festivities start at 2 p.m. with a variety program. The concert band, consisting of young people, will play your favorite type of music.

Games will start at 3 p.m. for all ages to participate in. A barbecued chicken and sausage supper will be served from 4:30 p, m. until? for the nominal price of $1.25 a plate. The old fashioned auction of new and old items will be 'held at 6 p.m. A free dance with music: by the Temple Rhythm Masters will start at 7 p.m. and conclude at 11 p.m. Awarding of prizeS will take place about 10 p.m.

We are asking the lodge members for the pastries: pies, cakes, kolache, etc., to complete the barbecue plates.

Volunteers are still needed, because only a few cannot put on such a large project. Call any of these chairmen: Kitchen — Leon Zavodny; Bar -Leslie Mesecke; Gaines J. L. Vanicek.

Dear Members, Lodge 175, Fort Bend held its monthly meeting at the Rosenberg Civic Center on Tuesday night, July 13.

We wish to compliment Mrs. Lee Ilausler on the excellent job she is doing on our scrapbook. We all enjoyed looking at it, Mrs. Geraldine Mikolajewski whs a visitor at our Meeting. She has been working with our youth leader to get our youth club organized. She gave a report; on YAD which was held at Lodge No. 88. Lodge 175 wants to congratulate the king, queen, duke and duchess who were selected at YAD. Our ,e‘v youth leader is James Stavena, assisted by his wife, Martha.

We would like all the youth to come to our next meeting, on August 11, at 8 p.m. in the Rosenberg Civic Center.

There are many activities planned for the youth so please come out and take part.

This is a last-minute reminder about our District VII YAD which will be held at the American Legion Hall on Kostorya Road, Corpus Christi. The location is approximately 3 to 4 blocks from the SPJST and Sokol Hall. This hall is air-conditioned for your comfort.

Kindly invite your friends who might be interested. We have a good pitgram in store for you. Let's strive for as much participation by as many members, in as many contests as possible from each club. Your district will offer prizes to the clubs to encourage you.

Brothers and sisters, let's give our Society's youngsters a boost and our loyal support to encourage them for the future. They need our support.

Won't you give it some 'thought? A cordial invitation is extended to the entire membership, and food will be available for everyone.

The registration starts at 1 p.m. Let us all be on time so we can start and finish as planned.

I would like to remind all leaders to arrive before schedule to take their posts. You will be handed an envelope containing all the necessities. Those areas of craft work must be manned at all times. Do not allow visitors or contestants into the display area until judging is completed. Only contestants who can set up their own display are the ones who have scientific and technical entries.

Our camp program give you swimming, horsemanship, archery, craft for which you should bring a clean white or light colored blouse or shirt, unstarched, but ironed if needed.

Bring along a cigar type box.

The program allows for a thirty minute break and two hours and thirty minutes at noon for the meal and for rest time. Flexibility of the schedule to allow for relaxation will be explained at camp. Meals and curfew must be adhered to for health reasons.

Camp fires and cook-outs will be by groups rather than the camp. Leaders have been trained in camp arts at training class and will have the help of older teens. All leaders should bring materials needed for flag ceremonies such as the usual meal-time rituals.

Arrival time is after lunch Sunday, departure at 6 p.m. Thursday.

This is the cake recipe that Bernard baked and entered and which you ladies wanted.

Sauerkraut Cake 2/3 cup butter 1V,, cup sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2/3 cup sauerkraut (rinsed, drained and chopped) 21/4 cup flour teaspoon salt cup cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon soda 1 cup water, Cream together butter and sugar.

Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in dry ingredients, alternating with water. Stir in sauerkraut.

Icing: 1 box powdered sugar, 3 tablespoons margarine, 3/4 pkg. of 8-oz. cream cheese, enough to make a creamy icing.

LO D G E NO. 4, HALI-FTTSVILLE Dear Members, Camping is over and what a wonderful time we had! We had a safe return home and arc very grateful that we had no major accidents to report.

We want to thank the SPJST, the state and district youth directors, and everyone who made camping possible.

The club members and I want to especially thank Patsy and Helen Za• bransky fcr being such good chaperones. The children were just a marvelous group to be with and work with.

I also enjoyed meeting and spending some time with Sister Maxine Pavliska and Brother Sid Pokladnik. They are two wonderful people.

We hope the SPJST continues having summer camp because it is riot only recreational, but educational and fraternal. This summer they were able to participate- in craft work, which included foiling, painting, and high lighting plaques. There was dancing, hiking, swimming, singing, games, nature, two cookouts and they even made underground ice cream.

To top things off, Wednesday night was declared Czech night and for the evening's entertainment, the children put on skits made up from Czech song

of the up-coming District II YAD. The members decided to enter a poster at YAD, so after the meeting everyone worked on this project. However, not being able to finish it that day, it was decided to meet Tuesday night to work on it. Camp forms and pledges were completed and have been sent in to the district youth director. Five people indicated they would be interested in taking swimming lessons at camp.

Some discussion was held on what type of ID tags could be made for camp. This year each club is to make

Under old business, we were reminded by the president to pay our yearly dues. A discussion followed on the talent and craft entries for the District YAD to be held next Sunday, July 18. Final plans were also made for our hayride.

Under new business, a discussion was held on our activities for the Family Day to be held at next month's meeting. Persons who attended camp, also reported as to the activities at camp. With no further business, our meeting was adjourned.

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY Brother Henry V. Loeve of Route 1, Granger, died Sunday morning, July 4th, in Johns Community Hospital. He was born September 14, 1885 in Ellinger and had lived in G!ranger since 1925. He was a retired farmer, a member of the SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and the SPJST, being a member of Lodge Komensky No. 20.

On November 14th, 1921 he was married to Miss Mary Martinets, who survives. Others surviving are: two daughters, Miss Velma Loeve of Taylor and Mrs. Earl Bryan of Fort Worth; four sons, Clarence Loeve of Granger, Leonard Loeve of Orange, Henry J. Loeve, Jr. of Taylor and Edward Loeve of Austin, and ten grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday,, July 6th, at 8:45 a. m, in the Condra Funeral Home in Granger followed by services in SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Rev. George Tydlacka officiating. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

• A native of Bell County, Brother Mikulas was born on December 6, 1895 and spent most of his life, farming in the Seaton Community. He was married to Miss Maxine Martinec of Red Ranger in 1920. He was a member of Ocker Brethren Church and of our Lodge, SPJST No. 47 Seaton.

Surviving are his wife: two sons, Jerome J. Mikulas of Seaton and Major Jimmy Mikulas of Of tut AFB, Nebraska; one brother, Charles Mikulas of Seaton and one sister, Mrs. John Ku2e1 of Buckholts. .Two sons died previously.

SKRABANEK, who passed away in the Goodnight Memorial Hospital on June 21, 1971, at the age of 86 years. He was born on October 5, 1884 at Wesley, Texas. He was married on November 6, 1905 to Miss Frances Bravenec at Snook and lived in Snook most of his life. He was a retired farmer.

He was a member of the Snook Brethren Church (Independent), serving on the board of elders for many years.

He was a devoted community servant and served on the Snook School Board of Trustees. Mr. Skrabanek was 'a member of the SPJST Lodge No. 9, Snook for many years holding various offices and being one of the oldest members of our organization.

Funeral services were held at the Snook Brethren Church and burial at the Snook Cemetery. Survivors are two sons, John R. Skrabanek of Highwood, Illinois and Robert L. Skrabanek of College Station; two daughters, Mrs. Ed. (Ella) Mikeska, and Mrs. Charlie (Clara) Orsak, both of Snook; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, and one granddaughter.

Items of Interest STUDENT IMMUNIZATION LAW SIGNED BY GOVERNOR SMITH The recent Legislature passed Senate Bill 27, ammending section 2.09 of the Texas Education Code and it was signed into law by i. uvernor Preston Smith on April 26. This law is now in effect and requires that all children entering Texas elementary or secondary schools or institutions of higher education must nave been immunized against six diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, and smallpox. The law states thait "the State Department of Health shrill provide the reqttired immunization to children in areas where no lo,m1 provision exists to provide these services."

An amendment to the bill enables the State Board of Than to modify or delete any of the six required immunizations, and allows the provisional admittance of students if the required immunizations have ,been begun and are continued to he received "as rapidly as is medically feasible," and requires the State Department of Health to promulgate rules and regulations relating to the provisional adMinistration of persons to an elementary or secondary school or institution of higher education."

All students will be allowed to enter 'their respective school systems during the summer and fall 1971 terms, with the provision that their immunizations against at least one of the aforementioned diseases will have been started

by January 1, 1973., and all completed as soon as medically feasible.

Exclusion from Compliance Exclusions from compliance are allowable on an individualized basis for medical contraindications and religious conflicts. Students falling into these categories must submit signed affidavits as specified in the law: Medical The student must present an affidavit signed by a physician duly registered and licensed under the Medical Practice Act, in which it is stated that, in the physiiiian's opinion, the immunization required would be injurious to the health and well-being of the applicant or any member of his family or household.

Pevetc Tom Krause (Finsko): maj prvni dojern se setkani s f'rahou byla krasa Ceske- fedi, kterou j:;ein slySel v ulicich, ale jit nerozumim. Rad bych tento jazyk blite pronikl a poznal a ptiblitil se tak tivotu a duchu deskeho lidu. Myslim, ele finska povaha ma mnoho spoleeneho se slovanskou. Citil jsem to i pri urneleckem vystoupeni v Dome umelce, ktere protivalo obecenstvo se mnou. Je to takove zvlaani neviditelne jiskteni, kdy Nov& poznava, to si s nekYrn vYborne rozumi.

Klavirni virtuos Alfred Brendel (Rakousko ): Zamiloval jsem se do kras Frahy tak, ze jsem se rozhodl stravit zde dovolenou, kterou venuji studiu ba,rokni architektury. Podivam se i na dalSi pamdtky v eechach, zejmena na Sporkav Kuks. Z Frahy cestuji koncertovat do Portorika — a vabec se mi odtud nechce.

Provedeni Mablerovy symfonie nine v Praze inspirovalo k nejlep g imu vYkonu, protOSe vidim hlubokou souvislost mezi stavem Mahlerem a Franzein Kafkou, rovneS zdejSim rodakem. Velvyslanec Vladimir Koucky vzporunel ye svem projevu take doby poruby za druhe svetove valky, velkych obeti, ktere priries1 lid Oeskoslovenska v boji s fag ismem. Dale ve svem projevu pripomnel, Se naSi krajane se vScly hlasi ke sire stare vlasti. Po oficialnich projevech vyhravali a zpivali nisi hudebnici ze Svitav, rozproudila se velmi srdeena zabava, jsme se vg ichni citili jako doma mezi syYmi.
