FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Every serious undertaking requires thought and planning. Such is the case with a Youth Achievement Day, which has become a source of pride, inspiration and enthusiasm to many, both young and old, members. This was the case at the District III YAD on June 27 hosted by Lodge No. 66, Waco. The youngsters of District III are a fine and energetic group who have faith and initiative in life and progress. What is so admirable about them is that they recognize the responsibility of our organization which now calls upon us to make possible the effective operation of a program designed to better and to expand the fraternal activities within our Society. The 225-craft entries were indeed a beautiful display in several categories. The talent contest was also a rich part of the program with a broad skill of talent. The highlights of the evening was the royalty contest which proved very beneficial. They had seven queen contestants and five king contestants. All candidates had inspiring speeches and were presented without notes, making the competition very keen. This day seemed like a state contest with many happy winners. All who had any part in the day are to be complimented. • • We must accelerate our pace. Several months have passed since the

DANDELIONS I spied them in „the early dawn — I know they danced the whole night through A golden host upon the lawn. A silver sheet of shining dew Of fairy weave lay on the ground. And, oh, the tunes were high and sweet. And eerie, with a haunting sound. I heard the trip of (lancing feet And saw them bow in stately grace Before a partner's courtly smile, And pirouette, and glide a pace .. I stepped indoors the merest while To do a task. As I had feared While I was gone they disappeared. —Nancy Richey Ranson ance sales contest started for the free trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress in Abilene. We hope the results are satisfactory, however, we must gain momentum. We must improve our efforts, accelerate our pace for the goal is still ahead of us and time is passing rapidly. Securing new members is one of our most important tasks. An organization as any organism, cannot be dormant. To move ahead and function properly, our Society must be strong, energetic, and purposeful. It is, therefore, the duty of our members and lodge fune-

tionaries to consider fully all the conditions and favorable circumstances for the future enlargement of the organization. Remember, that our organization does not draw its vitality from some miraculous source; the organization lives only by the activity, enthusiasm, and personal sacrifices of its members; grows and gains strength by the influx of new members and by the development of practical and workable ideas. The increased activity in the past years undoubtedly is an encouraging and desirable phenomenon. However, our endeavor must not terminate here. That is, all our SPJST lodges should participate in the task to expand our ranks. The signs of lethargy must be eradicated and replaced with the spirit of new achievements. Participation in the current membership contest is evidence of faith in the organization and its future — of confidence in the importance of its program for the family, the community and the nation as a whole. The Society deserves this trust and confidence because in the 74 years of its existence it has never failed to fulfill its responsibilities to the individual, the family, and the youth whom it has helped to develop into loyal sons and daughters of American democracy. Remember, your lodge president, district organizer, as well as local lodge
