FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK The District III YAD at Lodge No. GB, Elm Mott was a huge success. District III YD Wilma Nesuda stated that there were 225 craft entries in that department. We will have more to say about this day, later, however, our sympathy is with the DYDs and Youth Leaders, especially on YAD dates. Sister Nesuda could hardly wait to give her sore feet a rest, and we do not blame her. • • Fifty-Year Members — Over the years, we are sure that our lodges and districts have held various functions, honoring those brothers and sisters who have reached the 50th anniversary of their membership in the SPJST. It has been a pleasure for the editor to join with our units in honoring these members present with a 50-year pin symbolizing a half century of membership. To each of these brothers and sisters the SPJST is deeply indebted, for it has been through their loyalty that our Society has grown and prospered. These members have witnessed many changes during the years of their membership, possibly more f ar -reaching changes than any of their predecessors, for the Society had to maintain pace with the rest of the insurance industry. As they approach the best years of their lives, we want each of our 50-

OPPORTUNITY By Walter Malone They do me wrong who say I come no more When once I knock and fail to find you in For every day I stand outside your door And bid you wake, and rise to fight and win. Wait not for precious chances passed away, Weep not for golden ages on the wane! Each night I burn the records of the day; At sunrise every soul is born again. Dost thou behold thy lost youth all aghast? Dost reel from righteous retribution's blow? Then turn from blotted archives of the past And find the future's pages white as snow. year members to know that he or she is held in high esteem by the entire membership and we extend congratulations and the very best wishes for a long and fruitful life. More than 140 million Americans now have some form of life insurance protection. This means that the lives of two out of every three men, women

and children in the United States are insured, according to the Institute of Life Insurance. Different Plans People included in the 140 million are those covered by individual and group plans with private insurance organizations, as well as those under government plans. Most (nearly 140 million) are insured by legal reserve life companies. More Coverage Although most families have some life insurance protection, statistics indicate that many could well have more than they now own. For instance, the average amount of life insurance today would cover only about two years of disposable income per family. The average life insurance protection per family for 1970 is estimated at $21,000. Financial planning experts advise families generally that they should have at least enough protection to cover four or five years of income. Although the nation's protection level still can be considered low in relation to needs, life insurance is increasing faster than family income. Insurance Doubled The average amount of life insurance per family has more than doubled during the past decade. During the same period, disposable income per family (that is, after taxes have been paid) climbed by more than 60 percent.
