FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Your last reminder — Be sure and attend the tax workshop on the Tax Reform Act of 1969 Law by IRS, which will be held in Temple on Saturday, April 17, 1971, from 1 to 3 p.m. It will be held in the Community Room on the second floor of the Texas Bank and Trust Building, across the street from the Supreme Lodge Hdos., on North 1st and 3rd Streets. Please read SL President Nick A. Morris' letter on "Important Tax Information," which you will find in this issue. Be sure that your lodge officer (s) or any interested member is present at this workshop. This is your last reminder!

other dedication of a new lodge, Lodge No. 175, in District V and the SPJST. Then she introduced SL Vice-President Joe B. Hejny. Brother Hejny congratulated and initiated the local lodge officers and members of the new lodge into our Society. He, also expressed ,greetings to the membership of Lodge 175 in behalf of the other Supreme Lodge officers, who could not be present due to previous commitments. Then the local lodge officers were recognized who are as follows: President — Charles Janke; Vice-President — Leonard Steglich; Secretary — Johnnye Howell; Fin. Secy. and Treas. — Patricia Parma; Reporter Frank Parma, and Youth Leader — Gloria Janke.

Brother Hejny introduced. SL Financial Secretary Ben Zabcik, who presented the Charter, signed by 105 members, to President Charles Janke. Next on the agenda, District V Director Ernest Hanka presented the lodge's emblem to President Janke, and expressed his congratulations. Yours truly was also introduced , and expressed a few words of encouragement. The other sister lodge presidents were introduced from their respective lodges: Charlie Matcek (81), Tillie Helmcamp (88), and Gordon Hrabal (172). Among the other district guests present were: Sisters Stacie Hejny and Regina Zabcik; DO District 1, E. R. and Sister Jakubik (9),

tended a warm and hearty welcome to everyone. The festivities started promptly at 11 a.m., and the dedication convened at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony was broadcast live over Radio Station HERD, Rosenberg. There was the presentation of colors by Charles Paris and the pledge of allegiance, led by Brother Stephen Janke. Mistress of Ceremonies DO Evelyn Mikeska was introduced by radio announcer. The guide was Norbert Stavena, and the gueSt speaker was Mr. Berk Gubbels, chief of police, who represented the City of Rosenberg. Their lodge also has a nice group of Organizers who are always ready to sign up a member into their lodge, and they are: Charles ;Rinke, Leonard Steglich, Frank Parma, Judy Holub, Olena Stavena and Noi"oert ,Stavena.

We were inspired listening to the speakers at the dedication who gave stimulating messages and greetings.

'The program was enhanced with a carefully selected number of youths dancing the Beseda both by the junior :group and intermediate groups of Lodge 83, under the direction of outgoing District V Youth Director Wanda BizThe two youth groups made a hit with the audience. Those Who were present came to have a good time.

They came because they wished to be counted among those who are showing respect and appreciation to our great Society. They came because they wished to be among their fellow fraternalists. Many genuine friendships have developed among SPJST members who live far distant from each other and rarely get together except on a rare occasion.

The conunittee planned to make the dedication a very enjoyable one and succeeded all the way. They contributed a great deal of time and tireless effort for the venture.. The dedication was above expectation. How can anyone forget the tremendous job done by the committees, who spent long hours planning this occasion. The plan-.

Tiers and the lodge were certainly helped by the many nice gills given for the occasion to be auctioned off.

More important than anything else, let us make sure we extend our hands to them in the spirit of brotherhood and real. fraternalism! Fraternalism is the foundation of every lodge, as a. major objective of the SPJST. Let us rededicate ourselves to its precepts and put renewed enthusiasm into carrying them out

The District V meeting on March 14 was not too well attended, however, those who were present were very

Wednesday, April 1 , 1971 attentive and took an interest in the proceedings. The district business was dispensed with in orderly fashion and the youth program and meeting proceeded right along. The details of the meeting will be reported by the district secretary, we are sure, so we will not go into too much detail, however, we will again note that it is very desirable that District V meetings be better attended. About the most interesting detail of the meeting was the explanation of the Tax Reform Act of 1969 by SL President Nick A. Morris, which will affect some of our SPJST lodges, and then his fielding of some questions pertaining to same.

We attended the District VI meeting in Moulton April 4 and were glad to renew many friendships. Here we will also let the secretary report the details of the meeting. The youth program was good and there was quite a number of lodges represented and the audience rewarded the youth with well-deserved applause. We were glad to hear Brother Paul Satilatura announce that they had the foundation laid and were ready to go "up" with their new home for Lodge Cechoslovan.

No. 40, at Hillje. Good news to hear, also about Lodge Ennis No. 25.

We regret we could not attend the District IV meeting in Wall, Texas on their date, however, we were requested to be at the dedication.

ewsbriefs Brother and Sister John Simcik of Lodge 66 paid us a visit at the printshop. We enjoyed their visit very much.

• Pavliska Family Reunion All members and friends of the Pay° liska family are most cordially invited to attend the annual family reunion on April 18, 1971.

We will gather at noon with our basket lunches at Weid Hall. This is the same place we met last year, between Shiner and Iiallettsviile on Hwy. 90.

There will be a. band playing in the afternoon for your entertainment. The committees have been working hard to make this one of our best reunions, so let's all come out and see that their goals are met. As in the past, all you

Maxine Pavliska, Reunion Sister Laura Lee Haffner, age 53, succumbed March 25, 1971, in Corpus Christi. Interment was in the Seaside Memorial Park, Corpus Christi, and she was a member of Lodge No. 79, Corpus Christi.

Karmies Balanies, age 77, died March 12, 1971 in Gainesville, Texas. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery, GainesVille, and membership was held in Lodge Pokrok No. 101, Gainesville.

Brother Tom T. Sofeik, age 81, passed away April 2, 1971 in King's Daughters' Hospital, Temple. Brother Sefeik was interred in the Seaton Cemetery, and was a member of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton.

Sister Carrie Furth, age 79, died March 31, 1971 in El Campo, Texas.

Sister Furch was a member of Lodge Vlastenec No. 45, Shiner. o • Sister Charlotte K. Hulen, age 27, succumbed March 24, 1971, in Houston.

Interment was in the Roselawn Cemetery, Bay City, Texas, and she was a member of Lodge No. 81, Needville.

Brother J. Olsovsky, age 60, passed away March 16, 1971 in San Antonio.

Burial was held in Mission Burial Park, San Antonio, and be was a member of Lodge Anton Cermak No. 56, Corpus Christi.

Brother Rudolph Dana, a.ge 61, died April 2, 1971 in Temple. Interment was held in the Taylor City Cemetery, and he was a member of Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor.

SPJST for outstanding service and contributions to the citizens of Texas and congratulate the organization as it celebrates the dedication of its new headquarters; and, be it further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution be prepared for the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas as a token of the appreciation of the Texas Senate and as an expression of pride in that organization's accomplishments.

LETTERS DISTRICT I TENTATIVE RULES AND REGULATIONS The duly appointed members of the R and R Committee for District I has proposed and respectfully submitted for examination and adoption the followas by-laws for District I, subject to the approval of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, and members of District I: Article I. Name Section 1. District One (1) of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, SPJST. Section 2. The purposes of this district are as outlined in the by-laws and constitution of the SPJST. Section 3. The fiscal year shall correspond with the installation of the newly elected officers. ' Article II. Membership Section I. Membership shall consist of members of current and future lodges in areas as stipulated by the by-laws of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. Section 2. Time of spring and fall meetings shall be designated by the duly elected officers of the district.

Place of meeting shall be by majority vote and/or designated by the current officers.

Article III. District Officers and Committees Section 1. The elected officers for the district shall be the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, flag bearer, youth director, and substitute youth director.

Section 2, Duties and qualifications of elected officers shall be as prescribed

by the 'by- laws of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. Section 3. Election of officers shall be by nomination from the floor and type of balloting shall be optional.

Section 4. Standing committee appointments shall be made by the president and vice-president as deemed necessary in the district.

Article rir. Dues SectiOn 1. Annual dues of five (5) cents per member of local lodges shall be assessed for support of district activities.

Article V. By-Law Amendment Section 1. By-laws may be amended at any regular meeting by two-thirds majority vote of eligible voters provided the proposed amendments are re, viewed and accepted by the by-laws committee and published in the VestMk four consecutive issues prior to a scheduled meeting.

Kutni, Secretary UNCORRECTED MINUTES OF THE FALL MEETING, DISTRICT III SP.IST OCTOBER 4, 1970, AT SPJST LODGE NO. 35, ELK, TEXAS President Vernon Wood, Jr., called the meeting to order at 11 a. m. called upon the youth club members of SPJST Lodge No. 35 to lead the membership present in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. Then came a. welcome from host Lodge No. 35 President Henry Brietkreutz followed by a response from 1st Vice-President Bob Oates. Next, President Wood called upon Secretary John J. Kutni for a roll call of lodges which revealed 9 lodges present for the morning session. Those present included Lodges Nos. 6, 25, 35, 66, 84, 92, 128, 130, and 158. President Wood then appointed Sister Helen Oates to serve as parliamentarian for the meeting. Following, President Wood called upon 2nd Vice President Johnnie Krizan for the tribute to departed members. Next, Secretary John J. Kutni was called uppon by the chair to read the minutes of the previous meeting. After hearing no additions or corrections to the reading of the minutes the chair ruled that they be accpeted as read.

President Wood then called upon Treasurer Robert Urban for his report.

Brother Urban reported the following: Balance at the beginning of the year — — — .859.94 Expenses for the year 707.79 Deposits for the year — 1,095.25 Balance on hand as of October 4, 1970 1.047.40 District III Permanent Youth Camp Fund $2,180.48 in saving.

In concluding, Treasurer Urban stated that he has collected district durs from 16 lodges and that only 3 lodges have not paid as of the meeting. date.

Following, President Wood called District III Youth Director Wilma Nesuda for her report. First, Sister Nesuda stated that so far this year the youth program is meeting with good success will). everyone cooperating and with

the youth club memberships growing.

For example, stated Sister Nesuda, that District III had the best participation at its District Youth Achievement Day as ever before with all events being contested with the exception of one and that at the State Youth Achievement Day, District in had 235 participants. Furthermore, stated Sister Nesuda, that at Camp Val Verde, District III had 173 campers comprised of 148 youth and 25 .adults. Sister Nosuda then stated that at camp this year many new ideas were tried which included junior counselors offering euggestions to the adult leaders, sharing camp with District VII, and expetimenting with the idea of having comp for just certain a ge youngsters instead. of everyone from just one eiistrict going and participating together. Sister Nesuda stated that this last idea would be more beneficial to the youth in that they would receive more attention channeled. toward their specific interests. In the youth club program, Sister Nesuda stated that all youth clubs in District III reported a gain in membership with the exception of one: that the youth leaders who attended the Longhorn Training Session learned a. great deal, and that the reason for stressing membership in the youth clubs was because all monies allotted from the Supreme Lodge to the District and Local levels was based on active membership. Next, Sister :Masada stated that the next training seminar will be held on October 24, 1970, at SPJST Lodge No. 135 in Ennis, Texas, and stressed the importance of attendance of all District .youth leaders and assistants. per youth for this year.. Furthermore, Sister Nesuda stated that overhead is the main expense or factor affecting each district in its youth activities allocation, and that with more participants the cost or overhead goes basically down. Sister Nesuda then went on to say that our youth program is expensive, but that she considered the money spent for the youth as an investment and not an expense. Furthermore, Sister Nesuda stated that youth investment is the best investment we can make for our lodges, and that if we don't continue making these investments our local lodges will be a sad picture in a few years due to a lack of interest from our young members. Sister Nesuda then stated that we can spend money on buildings and other things, but she felt personally that the best place is on the lodges and the youth. Next, Sister Nesuda stated that the youth have a contest going at this meeting on the construction ad design of a sales booth which shows how each club is making their money for their various activities. Sister Nesuda then urged everyone present to visit each booth and purchase something from the youth. Next, Sister Nesuda stated that she had conferred with the District III officers and a decision was reached to award $10. to the first prize booth, and $5. each to the second and third place booths. Also, Sister Nesuda stated that after lunch a Beseda contest would be held and that it was decided by the District III officers to award $16. to the first place group, and $8. each to the second and third place groups, President Wood then called upon District III Organizer Alvin Nesuda to present his report. Brother Nesuda reported that production has been real good thus far this year as evidenced by $1,181,000. worth of life insurance sold by District III to date and that only $19,000 of life insurance is lacking to make this year's quota. Furthermore, Brother Nesuda pointed out that he has had ten new organizers since his last report and that seven of them are producing. In line with this, Brother Nesuda mentioned that he has 25 organizers who show no production, but Brother Nesuda stated that most of these have been with the SPJST for a long time and have shown production in the past and that he and the SPJST are proud to still have them on the team. Brother Nesuda then expressed his desire to have more new organizers in the Dallas and Ft. Worth metropoli-

V ESTNXIC tan area, and that he had talked with lodge officials in that area and he stated that they had agreed to work in that direction. Brother Nesuda then stated that there are a great amount of contacts to be made in this area and sometimes there just aren't enough organizers to make these contacts. In concluding, Brother Nesuda expressed hope in adding at least ten new organizers to the Dallas and Ft. Worth area within the next year.

Following, President Wood called upon District III Director and District III Rest Home Director Sid Pokladnik to present his reports. First, Director Pokladnik congratulated the District III organizers on the fine job they are doing and stated that we should be proud of them and new business is a must for our Society. Next, Director Pokladnik stated that he had attended the National Fraternal Congress in Atlanta, Georgia, and that this same point was stressed by several high officials at the meeting. Director Pokladnik then expressed thanks to the youth and teena gers for representing their respective local lodges and their district at the State Youth Achievement Day. Furthermore, Director Pokladnik stated that we have some future leaders in our youth and we don't have to be afraid of leadership in the future.

Director Pokladnik then stated that his rest hOme report is similiar to his last report and that he would not go into detail on it at this time, Next, Director Pokladnik stated that there is fine cooperation in the Supreine Lodge between the 13 men who are working for you and that they always put the members first, Going back to the National Fraternal Congress, Director Pokladnik stated that we shoud get prepared for taxation- from the Internal Revenue Service because it is a coming thing. For example, stated Director Pokladnik, by July of 1971, the first of a series of taxes will be put into effect. These will pertain to income earned by local lodges from their public functions, stated Director Pokladnik.

For example, Director Pokladnik stated that any local lodge which exceeds $5,000 in revenue excluding life insurance .nremiums should report this to the Internal Revenue Service. Director _Pokladnik then stated that more information w;11 be furnished about this at a later date and that since this form of taxation has come into effect that we should all do our little part at

home and comply with the regulations and maybe we can escape with as little regulation as possible. Next, Director Pokladnik stated that the Taylor Rest Home is still full and that a new administrator Mrs. Vickery, has been hired. Furthermore, Director Pokladnik stated that the rest home directors had tried to hire an administrator of Czech descent but that none were available who would be qualified by the State of Texas. Director Pokladnik then stated that the laws force you to do thin,gs and that he and the other directors did not have any say-sa He stated that the administrator at the new Needville Rest Home is not of Czech descent either but that he was qualified by the State. Director Pokladnik then stated that it was not our intent to deny people of Czech descent for serving as administrators but that they were regulated by the State. With the State regulations, Director Pokladnik stated that we have to watch our money to a 'T'. Director Pokladnik then stated that the new Needville Rest Home is finished, that it is occupied by 15 guests already, that October 11 will be grand opening and ribbon-cutting, and that there are still memorial rooms left to furnish for $400 each. Following Director Pokladnik's report, President Wood recessed the meeting for lunch at 12.05 p. m.

President Wood then reconvened the meeting at 1:30 p. m. with the Beseda performance being the first item on the program. Following the performance, Treasurer Robert Urban presented a check to Sister Bessie Petr for $10 in recognition of the Beseda performance turned in by the Teen Club of Lodge No. 84. Sister Bessie Petr then stated that it had been her pleasure to teach Beseda to the youngsters and that she was real proud of all of them. Next, President Wood called upon Supreme Lodge Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky to present cash awards to the youth for their youth activities and participation at both the State Youth Achievement Days. Following, Sister Rosemarie Banik announced that Father Johnson, Sister Carlene, and Ruth Ballow as the judges for the youth sales booth contest this afternoon. Then, Pres. Wood called, upon Secy. John Kutni for another roil call of lodges which revealed 12 lodges present for the afternoon Session. Next, President Wood asked all fifty-year members of the SPJ ST to stand. Following, Sister Wilma Nesuda announced the winners of the

In the order of the agenda, President Wood opened the floor for old business and called upon Brother Albert Banik, chairman of the Rules and Regulations Committee to present his report. Concerning Article VII, Section 1, Brother John Murphy moved that we recognize adult members as the Supreme Lodge does in determining delegates for each local lodge, seconded by Brother Otto Hanus, and passed by a show of hands from the membership present. With no further corrections or additions to the Rules and Regulations Committee report, Chairman Albert Banik moved that the recommendations submitted by the committee be accepted with the exception of Article III, Section 7 (b) and Article VIII, Section I, seconded by Brother Otto Hanus, and passed by a show of hands from the members present.

Next, President Wood opened the floor for new business and recognized Brother John J. Kutni. Brother Kutni moved that District III place its old records on consignment in the Supreme Lodge Archives with the stipulation that they may be viewed by any member of District III upon request, seconded by Brother Otto Hanus, and passed by a show of hands from the membership present. Next, President Wood recognized Treasurer Robert Urban. LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear. Members and Friends, Our last regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, April 4. President Eugene Ilaisler called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. and led in the pledge of allegiance. All the officers were present at that time. The minutes of the March 11 meeting were read by Secretary E. J. Bedrich and were approved as read.

We discussed the old hall property and then our committee chairman for the bar, Mrs. Dan Hoelscher; chairman for the ticket committee, L. B. Haisler; and chairman for the kitchen, Mollie Zavodny gave a three month report on the income and expenses.

We were pleased with each 'report. At this time may I add that if anyone 'weuld like to help out and work in either the kitchen, bar or help in selling tickets at our dances, please contact those mentioned above. Or if you would like to help Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Luksa with the clean-up committee please notify them. They would all appreciate your help just anytime.

Our attendance was good for the meeting, but we hope to see more members coming to our future meetingâ&#x20AC;˘s. The weather will start getting pretty and warm now, and let's hope "wet" soon. Please do your best to attend, since we need to discuss plans together as a membership. We also need your different ideas and opinions to keep a growing lodge in action. Conic and bring several friends with you and show our officers we are behind them all the way.

Please mark these changes on your calendars so you won't miss anything.

First, we plan to have our next regular monthly meeting on Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m., instead of Mother's Day, which is our regular meeting date. There has also been a change in our Friday night social for the month. It will be a 'giblet supper social on Friday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. Hope to see a big crowd out that evening. I'll remind you of it later on.

There will be a board of trustees' meeting tonight, April 14, at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a District TI meeting in Holland on Sunday, April 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Hope many of you can make your plans to attend.

For a project, our youth club will have a booth set up selling cookies and candy for a short white to raise a little money for their activities.

Members also voted to install the two recently acquired air conditioners in the hall and to refinish several table tops for the upcoming District I spring meeting, April 18. This is a reminder to all lodges and the general public that barbecued chicken and sausa ge will be served from 11 am. to 1 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at $1.25 per plate. The meeting will begin at 1:30 pm., and a dance will follow the supper, immediately, with music by the Rhythm Tones.

Work committees have been set up and each sister member will be notified which hourly shift she will be required to help serve food. If for any reason whatsoever she cannot or does not want to serve at that particular time, it is up to her to trade or find someone to replace her. A serving list will also be placed in the lodge kitchen to this effect. We are depending on your assistance in this matter and any volunteer kitchen help will be gratefully appreciated.

Mrs. Lucille Kutseherousky, one of the co-workers of the West Hospital Festival, which is going to be held at St. Martin's Hall in Tours on April 18, asked if collie of the members could help work in one of the booths at the festival. Lodge No. 6 donated $25 to the West hospital Festival.

The Disctrict 11 organizers' banquet will be held at Lodge No. 6 on April 25, at 1 p.m. The kitchen will cater the meal.

Get-well wishes went to Mrs. Joe Dulak, who had eye surgery, and is doing just fine and was able to join us. Brother Frankie Lee- Uptmor is suffering from a swollen foot from drop-. ping a cook stove on it.

Brother Alvin Nesuda reminded everyone to try and attend the District meeting at Lodge 1h4 in Fort Worth.

There will be election of officers. Sister Nesuda reported that the youth clubs will be able to have booths at the district meeting.

LODGE NO, 54, WEST Dear Members, Our March meeting was held last iSunday, and, the meeting was called to order by Vice-President Frank II. Soukup who presided due to the absence of President August Pustejovsky, The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Sister Wilma and. Brother Alvin Nesuda of Lodge No. 25, Ennis, visited us for a short while; they did not stay for the entire meeting because they had to leave earlier to go to another lodge. Brother and Sister Nesuuda made brief talks, complimented the enlarged facilities that we have since adding on to our hall, and said the District 1II organizers will have their meeting at our lodge (54) on April 16, at 7 p.m. and District III will hold its spring meeting in Fort Worth, at Lodge No. 154, on April 18; any member may attend this meeting. Brother Kacir stated that it would be nice if the members of our lodge would attend this meeting and represent Lodge Nu. 54. Sister Nesuda, also said she would like to see members from our lodge visit in Ennis during the time of the Polka Festival.

Brother August Pustejovsky, who has been on the sick list for some time, is improving nicely and is able to get around.

The meal will be served for $1.50 per plate; carryouts for those who cannot stay.

During the afternoon there will be entertainment, some forms of games.

Brother A. L. Boudny read the minutes of the previous meeting and they were approved as mud.

The members voted to donate $500 to the Community Hospital and it passed. All members were in favor of it,.

This month will be a busy one with the Easter holidays, district meeting on April 18 at Holland, and a wedding on the 24th. Let's all go to Holland and have a nice turnout from Taylor.

Then on May 2, our May Fete will be held. The details need to be worked out at our special meeting April 12, so let's all come to the meeting.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Brothers and Sisters, A reminder, our next convention will be held next year, 1972, which, by the speed of time is not too far away.

Therefore, it is important that all of us do some serious thinking so, that we may come up with some sound ideas to be prezened at our next session. I am sure that some of us already have ideas that we feel would be beneficial to the further progress of the SPJST. But I am equally sure that everyone will not agree with them.

Therefore, it will be necessary to hold local meetings at a not to far distant time so that by convention time, we will have these ideas boiled down to some sound proposals to be presented, from our lodges.

Coming events at Lodge 88: Wednesday, April 14 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Sisters' Birth_ day Club meeting, luncheon and games, prizes. Thursday, April 15 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Social ,night, spaghetti and hamburgers served at 6, games start at 8 p.m. The annual Princess Ball, crowning of the new princess, and dancing to the good music of Ray Jurecka, will take place Friday, April 16, at 8 p.m. Let's make it a family affair, at a bargain, dancing only $1. Saturday, April 17, dance to the good music of Lee Roy Matocha's polkas, waltzes, cotton-eyed foes, snow balls, and others. Saturday, April 24, dance music will be provided by Rudy Kurtz's band from oomph-pa-pa land of Shiner, Texas.

Martha and Waldo Kalich celebrated their 20th anniversary at the dance, and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Urbanovsky celebrated his birthday. The Vrazels and Hi-Toppers battle dance was very well attended. Margaret and Gordon Hra,bal enjoyed the dance by celebrating their 43rd anniversary. They have celebrated their last 10 anniversaries at a 88 Pokrok dance. Mr. and Mrs. Robinette celebrated their 29th anniversary while the Johnny Caniks celebrated their 12th. Mrs. Delores Berckenhoff celebrated her birthday. There were also two good sisters who appeared on the scene. Sister Frances Olexa and President Tillie Helmeamp. They prepared some salads and good cookies and date bars to sweeten the tooth of pastry lovers. There could have been a bit of psychology used there; for the women to be present . . . men always perk up, have more spunk and work harder when there is a woman around. Nevertheless, I missed out on all this, just couldn't manage a garage sale and be there, too. But to those who helped, many thanks from us members.

The operetta "Muziky, Muziky" which was presented at Victoria, brought out many of the citizens in and around the Victoria area. They seemed to have enjoyed it very well and. so did the actors, in spite of a death of one of the ticket seller's relatives. The sound system man stated that he hasn't seen as large a crowd in that auditorium hi a long time.

FRolli THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE Important Tax Information Dear Members: For some time now, we have been telling you of impending changes in federal tax laws and how they might affect previously-exempt organizations, such as fraternal benefit societies.

We decided to take the "bull by the horns" and try to find out just what we will be faced with and how we should proceed. Brother Urbanovsky and I recently met with officers of the IRS in Austin. We were cordially received and commended on our efforts to cooperate.

After a short while, it became evident to us that neither of us could retain all the complex information and did not trust ourselves to pass it all on to our lodges and membership.

Consequently, we suggested that the IRS District Office furnish a speaker for a tax workshop for us and representatives from our lodges. The gentleman we were talking with agreed, and the District Director, IRS, has since granted such authorization.

The tax workshop will be held in Temple on Saturday, April 17, 19'71, from 1 to 3 p.m. It will be held in the Community Room on the second floor of the Texas Bank and Trust Building, across the street from the Supreme Lodge Headquarters, on North 1st and 3rd streets. There is plenty of parking on the two parking lots.

Who is to attend this workshop?

This is the part that took a good deal of study and examination, primarily a close look at the amount of premiums

Wednesday, April 14, 1971 remitted to the Supreme Lodge by the local 'lodges, since gross premium receipts are to be included when determining income in excess of $5,000. Remember, we are talking about the tax year 1970. The law, the Tax Reform Act of 1969, was passed by Congress in 1969 for the year 1970. Deadline for filing is May 15, 1971.

Based on the above, we have concluded that the lodges that MUST be represented in the workshop on April 17 are as follows: (These Will have to file both Forms 990 and 990T).

Who is to come? We will leave that up to the local lodges. HoWever, we feel, and we're sure they will agree, that the financial secretary, treasurer (both for insurance premiums and those who handle income from all other sources), should definitely attend, plus anyone else the lodge wishes to send. We do riot wish to exclude anyone who wishes to attend, however, the Supreme Lodge will pay only mileage (10c a mile) for only one car from each lodge. Thus the concerned individuals should get together and come in one ear for maximum economy. Mileage will be paid from the home of the driver. Forms will be sent out for the necessary information so that we will know how many will attend.

The following lodges need not be represented in the workshop, even though they remitted in excess of $5,000 in premiums to the Supreme Lodge during 1970. This is because, as far as could be determined, these lodges had no other sources of income, related or unrelated. These lodges will be required to file Form 990, which is on informational return, and they will be contacted by the Supreme Lodge soon. If anyone from these lodges wishes to attend, they may Co so on their own and at their own expense: 56-58--63-79-89-91-- 139-143--148-153-157-160-170.

The remaining 85 lodges do riot fall into either of the two above categories and thus do not have to file any returns or attend the workshop. (They may have to at some future date, if their gross income increases, including that of premiums collected).

Every ledge, repeat, every lodge in the first group listed must be represented in the workshop on April 17. No exceptions will be made. Plan everything else around this date. Remember,

all of this is for the equal benefit of the local lodges as well as the Supreme Lodge, and it behooves the local officers to be present. If they are not, the lodge will be pretty much on their own, and the IRS knows which lodges are involved.

Bring whatever lodge records you feel you might need to work up a pencil-working copy of the required forms, but don't load yourself down with too much material. Bring a pen or pencil and plenty of paper to make notes on.

In conclusion, I will state that the new tax laws and provisions are here to stay and it will be our responsibility to cooperate and to try to live with them. The passage of the law is not being debated; it IS the law. Congress passed the law; the IRS enforces its provisions.

In the final analysis, the law . will not cripple us. The federal government merely wants to know more about where we're ,gettin,g our funds, how they're spent, and mainly, that if there is income from non-member sources or unrelated activities or functions, the federal government wants an accounting of such funds and, if warranted, their share of the $$ in the form of taxes.

Some of this might be a "blessing in disguise," in that better and more accurate bookkeeping methods will be required, and a more efficient system of accounting of lodge funds to the membership will evolve. So, there will be some benefits derived from all of this, if we will only recognize it as such. There are some other things that are not as gloomy as they first appeared, and you will hear about these on April 17.

V 2sTwix -SPJSTFROM THE DISTRICT YOUTH DIRECTORS DISTRICT III YOUTH PROGRAM ACTIVITIES Dear Leaders: Your district officers hope that you will again take advantage of the spring district meeting April 18 at Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, to raise funds for your club with booth sales as we had in the fall meeting. Everyone was pleased with the results and participation.

The rules will be the same. Use a card table with a skirt on three sides.

Fasten standards on the front legs so that your sign will be 65 inches from the floor, the width of the table and twelve inches high. Decorate to please yourself and sell whatever items you wish. No soliciting will be allowed outside the booth. The booth shall be in place by 10:30 a.m. so as not to interfere with business, and to take advantage of the noon break. Two youth members will man the booth at one time. The prizes offered will be based on the above rules and the neatness with which the booth is constructed and operated. $20 will be offered in 'prizes awarded on decision of selected judges.

Keep in mind that our training class will he held in Ennis in the old Sokol building April 24, beginning at 9 a.m.

This is a very important class and if you miss it your club will be at a disadvantage all year. This year's class will bring you some new and exciting ideas and a bit of relaxation from your usual routine. Come, there is much in store for you and your assistants who are being expected, too.

Fraternally, alala Marcell Youth Leader LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Members and Readers: At our April meeting, we had 12 teens and 28 juniors present and five visitors. The visitors were: Larry and Susan Green, Mollie Bragewitz and Chris and Susan Ing. The children live in Dallas and they are the grandchildren of Brother and Sister Bill Kosarek. We were very haply to have these visitors with us and please do come back to visit us again, We had two new me Gibers who joined our club, and they are: Wayne Hanusch and Paul Christian. We are happy to have you as members of our club and hope you will etone to all of the meetings and soci,ds.

The teens will go bowling on Friday night, April 16, and will meet at Parkview Grocery, at 7 p.m.

Our District II spring meeting will be held this Sunday, April 18. Lodge No. 80, Holland will host this meeting.

This year, instead of having a youth program, we have booths set up for one hour in which we can sell something and also we are to bring beautiful dec orated cakes that will be judged for prizes and also later will he auctioned off and the money these cakes bring will go to the youth club that brings them, so be sure you have your lodge number on the plate. Let's get busy and bake a take and come to the district meeting, Sunday.

We changed our next meeting date to April 30, at '7' p.m: This is on a Friday night and will shirt with a covered dish supper and this lain be in honor of all of our 1971 high school graduates.

We will then have a short speech for them and then we will go into the regular monthly meeting. In our youth meeting, we will be electing officers for the new year which will start on.

June 1, so let us rememb r this change and plan to come to this meeting.

I would again like to relaind all of the youth that our talent elimination will be on Sunday, June 6, and I would like for the parents to encourage your children to participate, because they have a chance to win prizes and if they

Fraternally, Frank Klinkovsky, Youth Leader -SPJ STLODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members, Our regular youth meeting was well attended. We had a guest speaker, Mr. Wood, who is our District III president. Thank you, sir, for your enlightening words.

One of our charity projects decided on at this meeting was a $20 gift to the McLennan County Rehabilitation Gen_ ter.

Also, we chose a duchess, Sandra Deltrich. Sandra's mother was our first queen candidate to enter in a queen contest at a District YAD. This is really following in mother's footsteps. After our adult meeting, we had a kite-flying contest. Winners in the following categories were: Highest kite — Vernon Wood III Largest kite — Lisa Foyt Smallest kite — Glen Gamrnage Most disappointing kite — Debbie Dulock.

Our judges for this contest were: Sisters Dorothy Banik and Lois Camp, and Brothers Adolph Berlak and Billy Bordovsky. Thank you kindly.

The youth club will have an oldfashioned picnic on May 30, beginning at 2 p.m. at Brother John and Sister Edna Mach's farm. Here and now, special thanks go to the Machs for letting us use their facilities. We decided at the adult meeting to make this day a combined mother lodge and youth club clay.We will have a fatherson fishing contest, or mothe •-son, or .mether-daughter, or father-daughter teams, a sack race, a three-legged race, a wheelbarrow race, an egg throw, etc., etc. Just a plain old-fashioned picnic.

Circle your calendar for May 30.

Next month, our meeting will be held on May 16, at 2:30 p.m., during the mother lodge meeting. We will have a short program for our mothers.

LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD Dear Readers, The youth club held their meeting Sunday, April 4 at 3 o'clock. The attendance was good .

Our visitor was District III Youth

Director Mrs. Wilma Nesuda. We were glad to have you, come visit us again.

We also had a guest speaker, Mrs. Dorothy Hykel. She talked about traveling by air or on sea or making plans for tours. She also told the youth about her Agent Tour to Mexico City.

We had election of officers, The new officers are: President — Anton Kaluza Vice-Pres. — Henrietta Lander Secretary — Carol Dobecka Treasurer — Debbie Uptmor Reporter — Margaret Lander Youth Leader -- Willie Mae Schuetz Asst. We are happy to announce that Carol Dobecka will represent our lodge -at the YAD as queen. She is the daughter of Brother and Sister Robert Dobecka. Her duchess will be Lisa Uptmor. She is the daughter of Brother and Sister Frank Lee Uptmor. Anton Kaluza will represent-our lodge as king.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kaluza. His duke will be Jimmy Uptmar. He is the son of Brother and Sister Frank Lee Uptmor. We are very proud of you. Do not forget to start working on your craft items and talent routines; YAD will be here real soon.

The Brazos River Festival needs egg shells. The youth club is saving some.

Bring them to me as soon as you get some. We are also saving Betty Crocker coupons for an iron lung for two small children; bring them to our next meeting.

The youth club is going to the rest home Saturday, April 10 at 3 o'clock, bringing cookies and candies, and they also will have a program.

The hayride will be April 16, between 7:30 and 8 p. m.

The youth club was going to the Zoo and Baylor. Campus April 25, but this will have to be at a later date. The of banquet will be at our lodge on that day.

The spring meeting of District III will be held April 18 at Lodge No. 154, Fort Worth, so all of you try to go if you can.

Cur cake walk turned out real good.

3rd Polka-Waltz Celebration April 18 At Moulton, Texas The 3rd Annual Czech-German Polka and Waltz Celebration which has been drawing huge crowds the past years, will again be held at the air-conditioned VFW Hall in Moulton, Sunday, April 18th (rain or shine).

Continuous music of ten Lavaca County bands will start at 1:00 p.m. with admission to the all day and night affair only $1.50 per person.

Dinner, consisting of delicious picnic stew and all the trimmings will be served continuously by the Moulton Volunteer Fire Dept. beginning at 11 a.m. Various entertainment will be available throughout the event.
