Sometime semi we \till out long enough to 'Len cur readers about the experiences of our past wnile participating in stage productions, both Czech and EngliSh. Often, the actors enjoy the play as much as the audience, or more, however for other reasons. It is always what happens backstage and, even on the stage sometimes. Today, we will mention only two. In one case, the prompter told

On stage yours truly and another actor adlibbed: "Where is she?" "Oh, she'll be right back," to take up time. Backstage,

someone whispered to her, "Get back on stage, they're waiting for you.' The lady, remembering that indeed she was supposed to be on stage, rushed out onto the stage with her dress around her waist, petticoat showing, and finished pulling her skirt down on scene. The audience nearly split their sides. Why the above lines? Remember that the operetta "Muziky, Muziky" is being repeated Sunday, February 28. You will not regret seeing it. An ad is in this issue. You can follow it even if you do not understand Czech.

Unlike the older and more familiar standard annuity, which guarmtee3 an unchanging retirement income for the life of the annuity holder, or for a specified period of time, the monthly payment under a variable annuity may fluctuate. The amount of payment depends on the current value of a fund of equities, such as common stock, on which the variablye annuity is based.

Most plans provide, for a fixed portion and a 'variable portion.

With some variable annuities. payments are based instead on ar economic indicator, such as the cost of living index.

According to a life insurance company spokesman, the major attraction of a variable annuity plan to consumers is the likely possibility of increasing retirement income through the satisfactory performance of the equity fund. The fixed portion of the plan assures the retired employee of a minimum monthly income, even if the performance of the equity fund does not meet expectations.

Most variable annuities are sold an a group basis. The number of groups which had set up variable benefit plans by the beginning of 1970 more than doubled from the previous year.

There were a total of 277,0(10 Americans participating in 3,849 equity-based group variable annuity plans with U.S. life life insurance companies at the beginning of 1970. These included 4-3,100 persons enrolled in 2,317 group plans who had the fixed or variable benefit added during the year.

In addition, the Institute's report showed that there were 129 group plans covering 140,700 , employees which were geared to a cast of living index.

Even greater numbers are expected to become evident once final figures for 1970 become available, according to the Institute.

Reserves built up behind group plans with some equity funding totaled about $1.4 billion at the beginning of 1970, usually reflecting changeovers from standard annuities to at least partially variable plans. During the year, $170 'million in payments toward group variable programs was received by life insurance companies. zIg t-

Brother and Sister Holub are longtime members of SPJST Lodge No. 95, 'Seymour, both .being members over 55 years. Sister Holub, nee Mares, is an aunt to SL President Nick Morris.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Holub were honored January 17 with a reception observing their 50th anniversary. The reception was from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Community Center, 500 East Belknap, Seymour.

The couple was married January 18, 1921 in St. John's Catholic Church, Bomarton, Texas.

Mr. Holub is a Veteran of World War I. They lived in the Cache Creek Community for three years. In 1924 they moved to the Shady Community where they now reside.

Mr. Holub is active in his community, having served on the school board as trustee for several years, at Shady and Bomarton, when they were consolidated, and where the new school was built. He served as chairman on the building committee of the new Catholic Church from 1935 to 1939 in Bomarton, also serves on the building committee of the New Sacred Heart Parish Hall of Seymour, completed in 1970.

Mrs. Holub was born in Cistern, Texas. Mr. Holub was born in Fayette County.

Host and hostess were their three children, George E. Holub of Seymour, Mrs. Charles A. Harris Of Seymour, and Mrs. L. D. Horn of Fort Worth. There are 11 grandchildren.

CELEBRATE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY Machinist Mate Second Class, United States Navy for service as set forth in the following: Citation "For outstanding performance ct( duty while attached to and serving in USS Hancock (OVA-19) as Petty Officer in Charge of Auxiliary Machinery Room from Sept. 1, 1969 to 26 March, 1970 during combat operations against the enemy. Petty Officer Wachsmann consistently performed his duties with skill and resourcefulness enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the ship's distilling plants.

His thorough technical knawiedge was a major factor in enabling the evaporator group to meet the ship's fresh and feed- water demands, without resorting to water hours. His devotion to duty, as represented by his many free hours spent in helping his men learn their rating ; was an inspiration to all.

Petty Officer Wachsmann's skill and judgment contributed significantly and directly to the successful accomplishment of the ship's mission and to the United States' effort in Vietnam."

MRS. jUl1 7 TA JANOUSE Mrs. Juanita Porter is one of those rare individuals who seem to succeed at whatever ` she attempts — from skydiving to computerized bookkeeping.

She has mastered the ARC automated accounting system so well that she the third bookkeeper to receive the exclusive ABC Merit Award for her outstanding abilities.

Chairman of the Board, Mr. John T. Brooke authorized the award for Juanita after she had been nominated by her regional manager, Mr. Don Swiggart and area account manager, Mr. Bill Webb.

When ARC's automated accounting system was installed in the insurance agency, the owner, Mr. Jesse V. Amber, predicted to Juanita that it would take about six months before the new system would become routine for her.

Juanita says that he was right. It took that long for the procedures to become easy habits, and now she says her bookkeeping efforts "have been cut almost to zero" and that "it's a breeze."

The insurance agency has an unusual setting for its place of business: the modern terminal building of Redbird Airport in Dallas. Mr. Amber has his private plane hangered there.

From her desk, Juanita can watch the planes taking off and landing on the airstrip outside, and she is reminded of her skydiving days. She and her

HON. GUS MUTSCHER can achieve greater objectivity — through history we can find inspiration to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

The structure we dedicate today is more than an office building and headquarters for the SPJST. It is a tribute to the early Czech Texas Pioneers, including the far-sighted men who conceived this organization and led it out of its beginnings in La Grange in 1897.

This building consecrates their sacrifice — shows the unending rewards of their work — serves as a constant reminder of our duty to future generations — but above all else, it perpetuates the dream of past generations.

So, here today as we pay tribute to the deeds and dedication of the8e stouthearted Texas Pioneers, who played a significant rode in carving out the destiny of Texas and of the living shrine that is the SPAST of 1971 — as we pay tribute to 41-teir dedication and to their deeds, let us also pay tribute to their dreams. For the dreams of those early founders are the ones we must cherish today if we are to continue to prosper and serve as a monument to humanity, brotherhood, and benevolence another 74 years from now.

The chief aim and mission of this organization — the provision of survivors' - benefits — has never been neglected. And far more important, the purpose and mission of the lodge has extended much, much farther. For the benefit of living members it has a potential value that can hardly be mea-

sured. And that value lies in the mutual acquaintances and firm friendships engendered by this fraternal association, not to mention the cultural and national, as well as benevolent, endeavors which have grown out of this organization.

During its 74-year existence, the SPJST has gone diligently about fulfilling its mission, reaching out into many avenues and over a large territory. It has paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars in death benefits — has extended its help toward the saving of numerous homesteads for the orphans — Has helped its members by lending them money on their properties whenever they have been in need of this assistance — and always the organization, through its personal Agencies, has been interested in educating its members in the duties of citizenship, Consequently, SPJST lodge members rate as substantial, respected, lawabiding citizens in their communities.

Through their lodge affiliations, they have come to feel the responsibility of the duty they owe to this State and this Nation. The distinction of being members of an organization which ranks as one -of the largest Czechoslovak fraternal benevolent societies in the United States, is within itself an inspiration for the highest ideals. And it is therefore no surprise that the SPJST has produced some of Texas' finest patriots.

By dedicating this building today.

We are in part paying tribute to the men and women who had the dedication, courage, and true patriotism to see this organization through its early and most perilous years. As individuals, they were Great Texans. But I think the point to remember, and the main point to be emphasized in this dedication today, is not who these men were (although that is certainly important), but rather what they have done for us.

So I think it is more than fitting that we pause this afternoon and reflect on the energy and dedication of those early Czech Texas pioneers who helped carve out the destiny of Texas, and who sensed a need and had the courage to fulfill that need — by creating the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas.

Radical social and economic changes have occurred in our State since that founding year of 1897, yet our basic principles have remained the same. We still worship the same God and seek the same freedom. And the people

themselves have not changed, either.

The flavor of Texas and the character of our citizens has not been altered.

We are still living in the traditions of courage and individualism established by these pioneering people who went before us. And despite the fact that the SPJST has grown to 132 lodges and over 43,000 members, now including all nationalities — members are still vastly more than numbers on a card, the Society is still able to maintain intimate contact with the individual and despite all this, we are still able to receive unequaled service at minimum expense.

This new Headquarters Building of the SPJST is a credit to this fine city — it is a credit to the members who will use it directly or indirectly for many years to come — and it is a credit to the stalwartness, the dedication, and the very lives of the Czech Texas pioneers whose toil made possible in large measure everything we enjoy and cherish today.

And I can think of no finer testimony to the fact that — at least in the case of the SPJST — history is indeed definable as "the story of things worthy of being remembered." May the history we write be as worthy.

Or was it just Mother Earth shuddering over the behavior of her earthly children? Talking about behavior, when we observe what some people will do to gain their end, we can rightfully begin to wonder about the ancient prophecy: "Brother and sister shall turn against each other."

The February meeting was very well attended. We were honored to have Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris with us. Sister Tillie Helmcamp, our newly-elected president, conducted her first meeting after being introduced by cut-going President Tim Kostont According to reports she presided very well. She turned the meeting over to Brother Morris for the initiation of many new members, and did tie

do it! I bet they know they are in.

I am sure that our new recording secretary, Sister Mildred Holeman; covered the meeting in detail, but there are always items that will somehow escape a writer.

The Birthday Club sisters were honored. Sister Lucy Sostak rated a corsage for being the oldest sister. Sister Helen Hegwood rendered them all a nice song with Sister Estelle Kelly at the piano. The sisters' club was or•ganised 25 years ago by Sister Frances Olexa and several other sisters for the purpose of fellowship; charity and to help the lodge in general. They are doing an outstanding job.

Anyway, there were so many at the meeting that the beverages didn't ga as far. as usual, but Dean Ev,etts by his good deed saw to it that the glasses kept,' on sparkling. Joe's remarks, after he was fortified with some of that golden fluid were "Mama was boss for 45 years and it's time for me to take over now."

Corning events: Saturday, Feb. 27 — (dance; music by the very popular Vra-', sels' Band. They can always make you feel like stepping it up. And what a happy way to lose a pound.

Hear ye, hear ye: Sunday, Feb. 28, the much talked about "Muziky, Muziky" will be replayed at Lodge 88, W. 15th and Beall. The operetta starts at 1:30, so out-of-tcwners, who wish to, may reach their homes before nightfall. This is your last chance to see . this play in Houston. Admission is only $1. Tickets may be purchased from our Youth group, adults, or at the' door.

Do come early and enjoy the day with u.s. A delicious Czech dinner will be served at 11:30 and I'll bet the good sisters will have something good for dessert; they always d6.

On Saturday, March 6, we have a semi-formal dance at the Chandelier Ballroom. The Blumes can always make an occasion like this taps. Ladies, put on your frills and give the gents a treat.

The Birthday Club sisters' card party will be on the first Wednesday, and the club meeting and party in the. second Wednesday in March. Those of you .gentlemen or ladies who live or work near the lodge take advantage of their good food and pleasant atmosphere. You workers can get served promptly at or even before 12 and. there are games and prizes.

Don't miss the big ones — the social nights on Thursdays, good meals,

8 home-cooked spaghetti, hamburgers, and kolaches from 6 to 8 — games 8 to 10. This is a nice way to visit with one another.

With the sick: Sister Mrs. Bessie Kolacny who underwent surgery, is now at home and doing fine; Sister Mrs. Marceil Malak, our youth leader, had minor surgery and is doing fine; Sister Mrs. Donna East, daughter of Ed and Agnes Miculka, checked into Spring Branch Hcspital for surgery. We wish them, and all the others who are ill, a speedy recovery.

Comments and news: The Hi-Toppers dance was very well attended, to the point of a little close dancing: no complaints, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The Knights of Dixie dance was very much the same, fun by all. Here's one for you — Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Federwisch velebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and not only brought their younger family, they even brought papa and mama along and by golly they danced a round, too!

Many people came to see the color movies of Bohemia, Moravia and Slolrakia; all are proviences or states of Czechoslovakia. This film was one of 'the best and most interesting of any shown here. This was a Cedok film, shown through the courtesy of Maurice Kovar, representative of Flair Travel Agency. He also furnished the large Screen. It was arranged by Karel Sicner, and projected by liacla y Smelinsky. The projector was furnished by the Janak Filming and Lighting Co. Thanks. The choir of 88 rendered a few nice songs just before movie curtain time and was led by Tim Kostom.

For our 6th annual celebration we had beautiful weather and the people came out, and here again I feel at a loss for space and length of letter to give every one justice for their efforts to make this such a success, so let me say to the barbecue committee, the kitchen, dining room, bar committees, the sisters' bazaar, youth projects, Valentine makers, ticket sellers and all other committees, and by all means to those helpers, who were not on regular work lists, but stepped in where needed, a very much-deserved thank you.

Clarence Baca Was also an honoree at table 49, celebrating his birthday. Martha and Elvin Kocich of Sugar Land, who are regular attendants at Lodge 88, were again enjoying themselves at Ed Kocich's table. Martha and George Krenek of New Gulf were visitors at the William Macho table, with some more jolly people. Keep coming. The 'Herman ,Schwenkes were celebrating their 29th anniversary; hope you have many more.

Bea and Ed Kostom from Bisby, Arizona, brother of Tim Kostom, are here on an extended visit, and looking over the south border of the U.S. to Visit in Mexico before returning home.

On February 7, Wanda and J. D. Elsner gave a surprise birthday and retirement party for his father, Joe Elsner, who was 65 years young and was connected with the CocaCola Co. for 43 years. Relatives, friends and coworkers came in large numbers. His brother, .Tom. and Mary Ecier, came all the way from Taft. A nephew and his family came from Kaufman.

A buffet supper was served and a good time was had by all. Brother Jee, may you possess much good health for a long time to come, and lots of luck so you can win your share of the domino games.

Monday night, just before the last stroke of my pen, we held our dramatic club meeting. We started with pros and cons and this and that, but after the verbal pollution cleared away, we, with everyone's interest, effort, and cooperation, narrowed our thoughts to a very constructive program which will be beneficial to Our Society and our own well-being. Certain committees were established to govern certain aspects of our club functions and ,keep it on a higLer level.

"MUZIKY, MUZIKY" REPEATED IN HOUSTON Some of Czechoslovakia's most beloved folk and popular melodies will be heard again when Texas' only Czech dramatic club, Hlahol, SPJST Lodge 88, in Houston, presents a repeat request performance of the musical comedy, "Muziky; Muziky" this Sunday, February 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the SPJST Chandelier Ballroom, 15th and Beall Sts., Houston. More than 20 costumed actors will portray the 18th century efforts of Frantisek Kmoch to preserve folkloric music as a bandmaster for the city of Kohn, Czechoslovakia. This operetta is filled with beautiful folk melodies and popular songs of the play in many comical scenes. It is played in the native language, but the comedy and music is self-understood and each program contains the English synopsis making the entire story clear for anyone to understand. The great heritage of the Czech people makes this a very interesting and entertaining play.

John J. Pech, director of the Concert Choral Society of Houston and a product of Prague's Academy of Music, has 'written a special score for the threeact operetta staged in a nostalgic peasant village setting, and he will accompany en a concert organ the vocal renditions of actors and the village chorus in more than a dozen polkas and waltzes that are so familiar to most Texans of Czech descent. Songs include Jarabecek (Little Bird). Andulko Safarova (Annie the Foreman's Daughter) Myslivecek (Huntsman), Ja Main Doma Kocoura (Tom Cat Polka), Vzponiiname (Memories), and Pisnicka.

10 LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Members and Friends, Our last regular monthly meeting was held on Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m. President Eugene Haisler called the meeting to order and led in the pledge of allegiance. All officers were present. Secretary E. J. Bedrich read the minutes •of the January meeting and they were approved as read.

We discussed final preparations for the opening of the• addition to our hall which was held Sunday, February 21. Brother Ben Zabcik and Brother Ernest Schiller gave a report en auditing the lodge books and also presented a 1970 financial report statement to each member. It was nice to see so many members and friends attend the meeting.

Thanks go to you for mak. . ing a special effort to be there.

The youth club also held their meeting and had a nice attendance. They have several projects they will be work. ing on in the coming months that sound, like fun. They will be discussing more about it in the future meetings, so if ycu have children, bring them and let them join in these activities.

We decided that our next meeting, which will be held on Sunday, March 14, will begin at 1:30 p.m. instead of the usual 2 p.m. There will be a District II Youth Day at Seaton and in order for a lot to attend, we set the time of the meeting a little earlier. I'll remind you of it again at a later date.

Our visitors were Johnny Hruska, Norma Andel and Miro Spanhel, A special thanks goes to Miro for the nice donation he contributed to our youth club fund. We would like to invite them to come again often.

Cur new members accepted were Larry Wayne Kelarek„ Joyce Lynn Mertz. Allen James Mertz, Gary Wayne Spanhel, Jimmy Dean 'Spanneli, Helen Spanhel, Janice Elaine Schange and the family of Charles M. President Dan F. Balusek prc-sided at the meeting. Flag bearers were Brothers Clarence Sodek and Woodrow Marek. Flag Bearer Ronnie Forney was the only officer absent. After the pledge of allegiance, a moment of silent prayers in memory of deceased members Sister Louise Motl who passed away January 16 and Brother Walter A. Jakubec who passed away very suddenly, on February 2, was held.

In behalf of the entire membership, I express to the survivors our deepest sympathy. Sister Annie Jakubec, we had two vacant chairs that were usually occupied by Brother Walter and you. We really missed you both.

Sister Ruby L. Bolton read the January minutes and these were approved as read.

'Inc sick list included the following who had been sent get-well cards: Brothers James Biskup, Thomas Hula, James E. Fechal, Karel Kalenda, Joe Fechal, Sr., and Brian Vanicek, and Sister Frances Ondrusek, and Sister Shenkir. Brother L. J. and Sister Vlasta Motl are now hospitalized at Santa he Hospital and are steadily improving.

I hope all the above named are well on their way to complete recovery from their various ailments.

The chairman is Brother Johnie L. Vaniteek, the vice chairman is Brother John J. Hruska, and Brother Clarence Sodek was re-elected secretary. The threemember maintenance committee consists Of Brothers Raymond Bragewitz, Frank Spanhel and John Kohut.

The following donated their services for lodge improvements, etc.: Edward Hejl, plastic name plates for the past presidents' picture frames, Irma. Klinkovsky, the printing of 1971 dance schedules, Ed Schneider, the availability of his pasture if needed for parking cars for the SL dedication, Jerry Pechal, and Jerry Trampota donated a cistern to be used for burning trash, Leon Zavodny cut the cistern into three sections, Willie Kohutek and Frank SPanhel families for the star lettering on the new addition, Frankie Klinkovsky and Debbie Sodek for decorations on the tables, Bob Sodek and .Johnie L. Vanicek, donation of the red carpet for the entrance, Leon Zavodny aluminum foil for the kitchen, Brother and Sister Otto Janousek, the bunting for the stage, Johnnie L. and Laverne Vanicek for the plants in the planter and also the use of Johnie's digger for laying of the new gas line.

Thank you all. If I have overlooked someone, it was not intentional.

Youth Leader Frank Klinkovsky gave the teen club's report and reminded everyone to support the youths' fundraising night, Friday, February 12. I can report the project was a huge success. Dana Balusek gave the junior club's report. I will not elaborate on these reports because the leaders will send these to the Vestnik.

We came to the old business of electing a youth leader to serve from June 1, 1971, to June, 1972. I can report we were successful in securing Sister Marie Mihatsch to serve in this capacity.

Congratulations, Sister Mihatsch. We will all have to support this new youth leader, just as we have the former ones.

HLAHOL DRAMATIC CLUB

The Hlahol Dramatic Club of Lodge 88 held its first meeting of the year on Monday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the lodge home. A large attendance took part in lively discussions and then proceeded with the official business. A report of the yearly party held for the actor-participants of last year was made by Secretary-Treasurer Frances Olexa with a small left-over balance which was retained in our treasury.

It was decided to have a purchasing committee, donation committee, rules and regulations committee, and a ticket committee. Those serving' on the purchasing committee are: 'Tun Kos-, torn, Karel Sicner, and Harriette Allison; on the donation committee: Patsy 13e.ba, Rosalee Kostom, Anna Kilnar, and Della Kadlecek; on the rules and regulations committee are: Otakar Urban, Birdie Hasher, Tim Kostom, Karel Sicner and Harriette Allison, and on the ticket committee: Otakar Urban; Rose Sicner, and Naomi Kostom.

Director Jan Schroif reported on the coming Czech play "Smejte se s Nami," which is to be performed in early May, and then handed out the

roles to the chosen actors for his play.

The plot takes us back to the early days of the old-fachioned flour mills and is based on the folklore during that time.

We had a visitor, Mr. Paul Stevens, who is a playwright and a producer here in the City of Houston. Tim and Naomi's brother and his wife, Emanuel and Bea Kostom from Arizona also visited with us and were welcomed With our fraternal love.

Next meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 22, 1971 at the lodge home at 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in dramatics, come and join us.

Brothers Jerry Jaroszewski, Sr., is chairman of the entertainment committee and his assistant chairman is Brother John Valusek.

Mary Cordray was named as reporter for Lodge No. 173, Galveston.

Brother Jerry Jaroszewski, Sr., announced the first dance for 1971. This Will be a combinatien barbecue and dance. It is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, at the Brewery Workers' Hall. Serving of barbecue will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Dancing will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Music will be by the Texas Dutchmen, from our sister city, Houston. Tickets will be available from any of the members at the price of $2.50 for both barbecue and dance. Sisters of the lodge are asked to bring pastries.

Cash donations will also be welcomed by the entertainment committee. Donations may be mailed to Mary Cordray, 3923 Ave. Galveston, Texas, or will be picked up if arrangements are made by phoning her at 762-3157. We will be looking for all of you to attend, especially from the cities within a fifty-mile range.

There were five applicants for membership: Gary Allen Mansfield, Philip Lewis, Glen Lewis, Jean Marie Lewis and Catherine Anne Lewis.

Brother Sefcik announced that the Distr_ct V meeting will he March 14 at Lodge No. 142, and urged all members to attend.

VtSTNfIC BIRTHDAY CLUB OF LODGE NO. 88 Both Birthday Club parties in February were great, and well attended.

Although it was cold outside, inside Lodge 88 there was warmth, laughter, and good food. Sisters celebrating birthdays in February are Frances Dvorak, Lucy Sostak, Anna Jordan, and Angeline Drozd. President Sue High brought the meeting to order. Secretary Birdie Hilsher read the minutes for the last meeting, and Treasurer Mary Tilich gave the financial report.

Two new members were welcome(' into the club. To keep your yearbooks up to date, adds Tillie Mae Billy, 1211 Walton, 77009, phone 864-7218, birthday, Sept.

8, and Willie Mae Wood, 4922 Griggs Rd. 86, 77021, phone 748-6035, birthday Nov. 21. Also please change Louise Chudej's phone number to 672-9229. A very nice thank-you letter from Anna Kostom was read by Secretary Birdie Hilsher. Anna Kostom wrote how she enjoyed receiving the corsage and pincushion. It was decided in the meeting to have a kolache bake on February 218. Lodge 88 will have a repeat performance, by popular request, of the play "Muziky, Muziky." The admission is $1, and this will he your last chance to see the play at Lodge 88, although there will be two or three out-of-town repeats. The Birthday Club will be at the lodge too, on February 28, with their delicious home-made kolaches.

It was decided in the meeting to have a rummage sale on Wednesday, March 4. imyone with donations please contact Sue High, Birdie Mistier, Patsy Baca, Evelyn Mikolas, or Imogene Lero. It was decided that the birthday club needed a telephone committee.

Elsie Zalesky and Sophie Hampel volunteered. It was brought up in the meeting that Mary Kalousek and Anna Watson were ill. There were 43 visitors at the meeting. Donations were made to the birthday club in February

A big thank you from the birthday club goes to Emil Horelica, for helping when help is needed. On February 8 at the Lodge 88 monthly meeting, President Tillie Helmcamp recognized the birthday club. Fortyfour birthday club members came, and received special carnations. Then they were escorted (by sweet gicls from the youth club), to a special section. Everyone was glad to see Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris, and the meeting was really interesting. Then Helen Hegwood surprised everyone by singing a special song, to the birthday club.

The whole audience enjoyed that special treat! Thanks, from the birthday club, Helen; your talented voice is the greatest! Then President Tillie Helmcamp pinned a beautiful corsage on Lucy She was the oldest Birthday Club member present. Estelle Kelly was the Winner, of a special birthday club prize.

All the club members would like to say thank you to President Tillie Helmcamp, for remembering them in that extra special way. I would also like to add that Della Kadlecek won a special organizers' prize, and Cecilia Klecka won a door prize. Ann Elzner donated the drinks after the meeting, because it was her husband Joe's birthday.

Another historic event is over — the opening of the Supreme Lodge Building in Temple. As expected, it was sensational. We are proud to say there were quite a few birthday club sisters up there. The Birthday Club Bazaar at Lodge 88's sixth anniversary was a big success. The club would like to give a big thank you to all the wonderful donors and shoppers, who made the bazaar possible. MEMBERS IN THE NEWS: We are sorry to hear that. Itasca Cerny's mother had another stroke; here's hoping by now she's much better. Della's husband, Amos Kadlecek, is in the hospital. He is recovering from knee surgery. Albino i3rawe's granddaughter Shirley Drawe, will begin teaching this year. Anna Soukup's sell, Sidney Soukup, took a trip to California, on NASA business. He also slopped to visit his sister, Ernestine Brittain, in San Bruno. She took him to Chinatown, to visit their New Year's celebration. He really did enjoy his week's trip. Ellen Gill's children, Middle and Paul, moved to San Antonio. Wanda and J. D. Lizner threw a surprise party at Lodge 88, for their daddy Joe Elsner. It was Joe Elzner's 65th birthday, and he retired from Coca-Cola Co. after 43 years.

We were proud to hear that Evelyn :IVIikeska was elected chairman of the organizers for 1971; and Patsy Baca was elected vice chairman., Patsy and Clarence Baca : are enjoying their new home. It is an old English home in 'Timbergrove Manor. Evelyn Mikeska took a trip recently to visit tif cuts , Mr . and Mrs. Joe Macat well, Texas.

Plans are underway hostesses for March are. Fr.5iac„ Sophie Hampel, Emma Jarisch, Sophie Hruby, and Cecilia Klecka. Wednesday, March 3, is the Birthday Club card party. Lunch served at noon will consist of baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green string beans, and peaches. The price is $1.25 adults, and 70c children, and also includes home-made cake and coffee. 'Then on Wednesday, March 10, is the birthday club meeting and social. Lunch that day will be 75e adults, and 40c, children. This will also include homemade cake, and coffee, so everyone mark your calendars for two days of wonderful ente=r-tainment in March, with the Birthday Club.

NO, 4, HALLETTSWILLE Dear Members, (In Sunday, February i4, Lodge No. 4 held its regular monthly meeting with a large attendance. President Er! Holy opened the meeting followed by the pled ge to the flag led by David Zak and Ronnie •eVelk.

Brother Hamer Craletka read a resolution or sympathy for our departed brother Henry Muenster.

Secretary Charles Holy announced. that Helen Zabransky will be his assistant secretary. She then read the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. Correspondence then followed. Secretary Holy, said that all the members should try to get new members 'and if there is anyone interested in joining, to notify him. Our new lodge member is Clifford Chat-ham. ran the sick list we have Sister Mrs. -Charles Mikush. We wish her and other sick members a speedy recovery.

It was discussed and voted on to have our April meeting on the third Sunday in April instead of the second, since Easter is on the second Sunday.

President Holy spoke about the dedication of the Supreme Lodge Office Building in Temple which he attended.

The lodge was happy to ,have Brother F. K. Bucek and Sister Bucek present. Brother Bucek was 93 years young this month. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" and wished him many more.

He then thanked the members. Brother Buck started the celebration of birthdays each menthe Premium refund cheeks were given out and the meeting was adjourned.

The youth club then presented a short program which was enjoyed by ail. The program was as follows: Valentine Poem — Marcie Holy bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee Laurie Chudej, janell Chudej, Ronnie Sevcik, Kenneth Sevcik, Mark Sevcik, Diane Holy, Sharon Miculka, Mary IVluenster, Arlene Zak, Kathy Zak, Jeanie Zak, Melessia Holy, Thomas Holy Art "Blinkletter" Show — Sandra Holy, Annie Zabransky, Vivian Vasek, Chris Muenster, David Zak. The afternoon was spent playing dominoes and in conversation. Refreshments and lunch was served.

The winner of the February birthday cake was Brother Charles Galetka.

'Members stood in a moment of silence in tribute to Sister' Anna Matcek who died Friday, February 5 at the age of 84. She was the mother of our president, Charlie Mateek. She was a faithful member, attending all meetings until the recent few months when ill health caused her to have to stay home.

President Matcek opened the meeting by extending his thanks to all who worked and helped with the chili supper; it was a success.

Minutes were read and approved as read. Sister Werner reported. a pecan 'tree was donated by Mr, and Mrs. Jim Matlock to the Rest Home No. II. Treasurer lqueka gave his monthly -report. Building Fund Treasurer Arnold Franek gave a financial report on the chili supper.

The musical comedy "Muziky, Muziky'' will be repeated by popular demand on Sunday, February 28, at Lodge 88. And the dedication of the new Ledge Fort Bend 175 will be held Sunday, March 28 at the Fort Bend County Fair Grounds m Rosenberg. She asked everyone to attend. JOHN KOTRLA LIVES LONG ENOUGH TO COLLECT OWN LIFE INSURANCE John Kotrla. has lived long enough to receive his own life insurance, and at 96, was presented with a check for $1,000 Friday, from SL Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky. It is the policy of the SPJST to present the life insm:once to the insured at the age of 96, and Brother Kotrla, a resident of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Horne in Taylor, was 90 in January of this year.

Born in Industry, Texas, he was married to Teresa Mellmar at the age ot 24, She died several years ago. The we.dding was in the Vestin Brethren Church.

Johns Community Hospital, Mr'. Karla Was very much a part of the event, and the gleam in his eye would suggest the spending of some of the money. He is presently in the hospital with a broken hip.

Brother Kotrla is a member of the Brethren Church, and has been a member of the SPJST for 67 years.

To the youth: I hope you all will attend, even though we do not have our YAD that day, but there will be a program by each youth club. Each youth club can have a ten minute part en the program. Each . youth club that participates will be awarded a prize; not to individuals, but to the youth club. You will .hear more about this later, so do be planning and you will have to let me know at least a week anead so I can plan my program. You can earn points by being on the program.

Youth, it is also time to be working on your craft and contests for YAD which will be held Jtme 13, at Abilene.

Another reminder to the youth leaders, assistants and other interested adult members of a lodge when there is no youth club; the Youth Leaders' Building Conference is to be held April 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, at the IOOF Hall, 1909 Pine St., Abilene, Texas; covered dish dinner again. This will be a very important meeting.

YAD and camping will all be planned and leaders and chaperones assigned their jobs. Do come so you can choose what you would rather do.

Dear Members and Readers, Our regular youth club meeting was held on January 29. It was well attended. One of the 'main decisions was 'the rodeo. The teens decided to go see B. J. Thomas on March 4 at 7:45 p.m. and the juniors will go see Glen Campbell on Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m.

Our next meeting will be on February 26, at 8 o'clock.

Dear Members, First of all, I'd like to say that from the comments I heard, the 70th anni.L. versary program was enjoyed by all.

I'd like to thank all the youth who took part in the program. And I'd also like to "pat" Youth Leader Rosemarie Baulk and her husband, Albert, on the back.. They planned and narrated the program.

And now I want to say haw much I appreciate the help I got from the parents of our youth, for bringing cakes and other items -for our cake walk.

There were others, who don't have children in our club, and yet they brought cakes, and other hems for our project. I think I can speak for the entire club and say "thanks a million." We 'won't forget your generosity Also, you youth wino helped in any way with the cake walk, I'm most grateful because you know it takes teamwork to get things done.

To all the people from our lodge and our friends from other lodges who were .there and played the game with us, we thank you ever so much.

The time is passing so fast that all the youth should start thinking about their crafts and talents because it takes time to practice and to make your crafts. Our local eliminations contest will be the first Sunday in June and that will be here before youaknow it, so let us all start planning so we can came out winners.

We are proud grandparents. Brother Richard and Sister Dorothy Hykel are the pi -aid parents of a baby boy born Tuesday, February 9, 1971, weighing 8 lbs., 3 ozs. His -name is Jeffrey Allen.

The birthday cake was baked by Mrs. Edward Hykel. It sure was a pretty one.

LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Friends, The tour of the new headquarters building was hurried, but enjoyable.

The building is much prettier than the calendar picture shows.

At the February meeting, the club members discussed doing some projects. One was the planting of trees on the lodge grounds. However, with the lack of moisture, this project is pending. They also planned to have Merle Norman representative, and Mrs. Tom Griffith, talk to them about beauty and skin care.

Members voted to send cookies to the Senior Citizen's Home in .Edna for Valentine's Day. Due to a full schedule of all we missed our Christmas opportunity to help these fine people.

Our cookie plea was responded to generously and with a fine variety of delicious goodies that were delivered on Saturday by Mrs. Raybon.

Our Ivlarch of Dimes pastry benefit was well supported and through the efforts of the youth club, $201 was contributed to the Jackson County March of Dimes fund. We are grateful to the residents of our community and county for their loyal support to this worthwhile charity. Thank you all for Your help.

We know that the many friends of Birdie Erdecka wish him a speedy recovery. He was critically injured in a car accident several weeks ago and is a patient in the Bon Taub Hospital in Houston. His mother, Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, is our popular District VT Youth Director.

LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Members and Readers, Our youth club had our Valentine party Wednesday, February 10, at 8:30 p.m. Everyone had a good time. There was plenty to eat and drink. We had dips, chips, punch, cupcakes, and many other things. We also played games and listened to records. Everybody brought something to eat. Everyone enjoyed it very much.

We would like to thank the Snook Youth Club for inviting us to their party they had on January 24. All of us had a lot of fun.

At our meeting we had two new members. They were Jimmy and Gary Spanhel and we had one visitor, Kelly Andel. We were glad they could attend.

Our old business concerned the opening of the new addition of our hall.

Our new business concerned a moneymaking project.

Lodge No. 24 Youth Club would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Miro Spanhel for donating $5 to our youth club. We would all like to thank them very much.

Our social this month was a Valentine Party. This was held February 12, at 5 p.m. At this social we played many games and had a nice time. Afterwards, refreshments were served.

Our next meeting will be on March 14. Everyone try to be present.

SL Pres. Nick and Sister Dorothy Marris' only danghter, Katherine, taking care of her younger brother, Michael Matthew, the most recent addition to their family.

LODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Vestnik Readers, Our annual fun night held on February 12, was a big success. The last youth club meeting was a planning session, where the teens and juniors were assigned booths and. all the final plans were made.

Many of the members helped make the night a success. Mrs. Clarence Sula. was the chief stew cook, and we'd like to thank her and her many helpers because the stew was delicious. Some more people deserving thanks are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Zavodny and their workers in the kitchen, who were in charge of serving and other kitchen duties. Many people donated sweets for sale or cakes for the auction, plus other articles; not to mention their valuable time.

The cake auction was a big success.

All the buyers were very generous and all the cakes were sold at good prices.

The youth club would like to thank everyone who came out to support our project and there were many people Who did come.

Our next meeting will be on the first Sunday of March, as usual. This month we have decided not to have a social because of the fun night, so we will see you at the March meeting.

VESTNfK LODGE Na. 47, SEATON Only a Memory Today, I relive -a saddened few days aro when I attended the funeral of my last ".starenka" Mrs. Anna Trampota. of Crosby. Thinking back, I can remember that as a young child I did have fear of her, but these fears really weren't of her; instead they overcane me when it came time to say goodbye to one another. It always brought tears to my eyes and I was only a child. I too, remember her tearfilled eyes would sparkle as a sunlit bean when I would say, "S bohem, starenko," This made her very happy because I could communicate with her in her beloved Czech language. There were these and many other treasured moments which made it so hard for ice to say goodbye to her for the last, time. There is nothing one can do anymore, just cherish her memory and pray that she is at peace.

My starenka was indeed a wonderful person because she was constantly busy in her 85 years here on this earth.

She raised eight children, how I do not know. Her life was filled with many heartaches, one being the death of her husband and the other being the deaths of her twin daughters. She managed to take life as it came and -did so with God's help.

My starenka hand-stitched many, many quilts in her lifetime until her eyesight became hindered, and she sadly had to give up this creativeness.

She made me a special one the wedding ring quilt — for me to remember her by.

My starenka wrote many letters to different Czech papers including the Vestnik. She still wrote while in her rest home bed. She had a talent for writing and she developed this talenZ, beauti fully.

Starenka, was a wonderful Christian, and active in the activities that dealt with and around Czech. She was a good supporter of the church and she hoped to get well and return to worship in the new church, but her dream was never fulfilled.

She was an enthusiastic and faithful member of SPJST. She remembered long ago when SPJST made available a loan so they could purchase a farm and dwell on it. She valued her membership most highly and tried to to repay with her beautiful writings.

She was so happy when she received her 50-year pin and treasured . this; she took the pin with her to heaven.

She had the SPJST floral arrangement 'placed by her coffin, which was a beautiful tribute indeed.

Starenka loved Czech music and every morning she would listen to the American-Czech polka hour on the 'radio. On a pretty morning, the nurse turned the polkas on and went to get starenka's breakfast. Upon returning she found starenka had gone to sleep in God's world with the polkas playing by her side.

Her funeral was sad but yet beautiful in its own way. She always loved flowers and she was showered with many sprays, wreaths, and pot plants. What was touching were the 85 pink and white carnations atop her steel casket and the corsage she wore on her left side symbolizing motherhood. "Rock of Ages" was presented beautifully by the choir in Czech, as requested by her earlier. Then the recitation of "The Lord's Prayer" in Czech brought many tears to my eyes.

Saying goodbye was tearful indeed; knowing this Was a last goodbye.

Starenka died wanting peace in her family of children. Her last words as my mother and dad last saw her two 'weeks before her death were "Let there be peace among you." Now, I regret I didn't get to see her that time for now I have only her memory to live 'with. She was someone I didn't get to see everyday, but I did love her. She was, and always will he a treasured memory. May she now be blessed with the peace she always dreamed of and deserved in her 85 years Of life molded

by God's unending light!

Brother Doubrava was such a wonderful person. He always had a kind word for all, and he always saw the best in everyone, even those who had faults. By this he made others see that even the worst individual has his good points.

On Monday, Nov. 30, 1970 funeral services were held at 3 p. m. in the Galloway and Sons Chapel, with Rev. Charles Galbraith officiating.

Survivors are his wife, Annie Dotibrava of Beeville; one brother, Frank Doubrava of Skidmore; and two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Jackson of San Antonio and Mrs. Frances Kubala of Beeville.
