AU members are urged again, as always, to carefully read the minutes of the Supreme Lodge meeting held December 9, 1970. They contain information about what transpired in their meeting and plans for the future.

Our sincere ravels to Lodge 174, Rockdale for having to cancel our promised and intended visit Sond January 2.4 for the installation of locto officers by DO Lad J. Zatopek, at: D,trict II. We are sure he did a fine job.

We called him about cur cancelling the trip due to the overload of work and time consumed Saturday afternoon at the Publication Committee meeting in Temple. Out' editorial comments have been postponed to a great extent due to the large amount of mail and shortage of space. Some necrology and youth letters may also have to be postponed. e • REGISTER TO. We seem to be able to brace ourselves and prepare ourselves better :for a suffering that we know in advance is going to be considerable 'and will demand the best of us than for all these numberless pinpricks that bedevil us hour after hour throughout life. It may be their very minuteness which makes us so ill-fitted to bear them patiently. Whatever may be the reason, we should be aware that it is right here, in the way we react to "the little things," that we develop our habits and become in fact either patient or impatient men and women, It is worth nothing that patience leads naturally to acts of other virtues just as impatience leads naturally to acts of other vices. The patient mall, since he lives in society 'and not in a vacuum, will also be acting charitably and justly towards others simply by being a patient man. The impatient man, on the other hand, cannot help also being an uncharitable and unjust Man. In reacting badly to the suffering of daily life he will inflict his impatience on others. An understanding and sympathy for the broader relationships of himself and of his group should be part of the arsenal of today's leader. In addition, he should keep in mind that he may be misunderstood, and even not trusted, unless from time to time he explains the reasons for his developing position as he goes along. This is necessary in our country, where leaders are elected, not imposed.

An artist who paints on a canvas has many colors at his command,. At the beginning, he may stroke boldly with one color after another. This means little to the layman who perhaps can see only confusion. The artist, however, knows the pattern of his picture; and as he develops its

then, it begins to take shape and have meaning.

In a democratic society, a good leader needs to play a dual role— that of the creative artist with a theme or goal in mind, and that of the teacher willing to take time to explain the techniques and procedures involved in attaining the final goal.

A bit of pers p ective, then, comes from (1) deep experience in one's own field, (2) a developed understanding of which of his words and ' actions may or may not boomerang unfavorably in a wider area of concern, and (3) a willingness to be articulate in a manner that will shed light rather than mere heat.

four-state conference on 1M:ref:ions to Better Education, held in I s Itas, January 28 and 29. The conference is sponsored jointly by the•te Education Agencies of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. It will focus on the changing role of state education agencies in providing leadership for elementary and secondary education.

Brother George Lacina age 69 passed away at his home in Houston, Monday, January 18. He was a retired Southern Pacific construction forcmon, interment was in the Garden of ;lie;lisemane in Houston. Brother was a longtime member of SPJST ..ledge 67 in Schulen burg.

4 Brother Alfonse W. Stavinoha, age 93, died December 29, 1970 in McCoy, Texas. Burial was in Blessed Sacrament Cemetery, Poth, Texas, and he was a member of Lodge 03 Karnes Hobson.

Brother Albin Rucky, age 80, succumbed December 11, 1970 in Houston, Texas. He was interred in Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery, Houston, Texas. Brother Rucky was a member of Lodge 88 Pokrok Houston.

Brother Edward D. Marek, age 16, passed away December 11, 1970 in West, Texas. He was placed to eternal rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, West, Texas, and was a member of Lodge 6 Moraysti Bratri Cottonwood.

Brother John T. Kubin, age 59, died December 22, 1970 in Galveston, Texas, and interment was in the New Tabor Cemetery. He was a member of Lodge 116 Rozkvet Cooks Point.

• • Sister Anna Culak, age 90 succumbed December 7, 1970 in Shiner, Texas, and she was placed to eternal rest in Moulton Catholic Cemetery, Moulton, Texas. Sister Culak was a member of Lodge 27 Pokrok Moulton.

Brother Arthur Harris, Jr., succumbed December 31, 1970 near Gonzales, Texas, and was interred in Cedarvale Cemetery, Bay City, Texas. Brother Harris was a member of Lodge 148 Elmaton Blessing.

A hundred guests attended the celebration. They are both members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Rosenberg, and also longtime members of SPJST Lodge No. 64, Plum, Texas.

Mr. and Mes. Jerry Foytik of Rosenberg: celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, November 29, 1970. They were honored by their children, and grandchildren. A catered barbecue dinner with all the trimmings was served at noon at the American Legion Hall in Rosenberg.

Miss Sojhie Matocha married Jerry Foytik on November 29, 1920 at St. Paul Catholic Church at Smithville, Texas.

Mr. Foytik is a retired farmer. The couple have six children. Their daughter is Mrs. Irene Moore of Richmond and sons are Elheart Foytik of San Antonio, Clarence Foytik of Fairchilds, Domin Foytik of Victoria, Jerry Foytik, Jr., of Memphis, Tenn., and Frank-

Paula Jeter, a Temple High School senior, was recently selected to the all-state choir which is to be held at Jones hall in Houston on February 11, 12, and 13. This was the third audition in which she competed this year.

There were 128 singers representing four regions from the Texas-Oklahoma border through the central part of the state. Out Of the 128 represented, 43

MISS PAULA JETER were selected for the Texas All-State Choir. Paula is also a member of the Polyfoniks — a popular musical group from Temple High which has performed for many organizations throughout the state as well as in the community.

LODGE NO. 35 — ELK At our regular February meeting, Lodge No. 35 Nove Kvety, will celebrate its 70th anniversary. This will be on Sunday, February 14, at 2:30 p.m., with the program to follow.

The lodge will furnish the turkey and dressing. The ladies of the lodge are asked to bring a covered dish of one or more of the following: sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans, lettuce and tomato salad, cabbage slaw, desserts.

A television was purchased by the lodge and installed at Rest Home II. Five members donated $5 each toward the purchase of the TV at the last !riveting. They are Brothers Lloyd Zwahr, C. W. Meyer, Victor Werner, Anton Pesak and Stanley Slacalek.

Also, fruit and candy were bought by the lodge and taken to the Rest Home.

The sick list included Brother Albert Hartsfield still in the hospital, Brother Leroy Kamas is in the hospital. Brother Mucka had been in the hospital and on his return he had the misfortune to fall on some icy steps, breaking his right arm, and had to return to the hospital for two more days.

Sister Kalaja reported there were 59 members hospitalized during 1970 and cards were sent to them.

Under new business it was voted to sponsor a chili supper on Thursday, February 11th beginning at 5 p.m.

Ladies will be asked to bring pastry.

Sister Bryson had the Rules and Regulations printed and they were handed out. The lodge hall had been broken into. A U.S. flag and a wall clock were taken.

It was decided to remove the wood bannister in front of the 'all, since it is in bad condition and it will not be replaced.

New members to the lodge are Wanda Coleen Zatopek, Eugene James Zatopek and Kristi Annette Fojtek.

Refund checks were handed out. The door prize was won by Brother Joe Silhavy and the meeting was adjourned.

Fraternally, Dorothy Chervenka, Recording Secretary LODGE NO. 63, SWEET HOME Dear Members, Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home, held its monthly meeting December 20, 1970.

The meeting was called to order by President William Berkovsky. The pledge to the flag was recited, followed by the reading of the minutes by Secretary Felix Jurica. All cards and letters were read. This was followed by the election of officers. The officers of last year were elected to serve again.

They are: President — William Berkovsky Vice Pres. — Mrs. Anita Berkovsky Corresponding Secy. -- Felix Jurica Financial Secy. — Mrs. Vlasta Jurica Treasurer — Herman Wendt.

Committees were appointed with the following serving: Herman Wendt, Sick Committee Vlasta Jurica and Ben Bolech Resolution Committee Mildred Baleen, Milly Kutac, and Franklin Bolech Auditing Committee — Emil Kutac, Annie Kutac, and Mary Wendt.

After the appointments were made, door prizes were drawn. The winner of the birthday cake, baked by Elaine Berkovsky, was Leo Frazier. The cake for the next social will be made by Mrs. Leo Frazier.

Finally, it was time for Santa Claus.

He talked to all the little children and the big ones, too. He was truly an international Santa for he spoke English, Czech, and Spanish. Gifts were distributed along . with. fruit. Then Santa had to be on his way.

The rest of the afternoon was spent playing dominoes and talking. The men served the beer and the ladies served lunch.

We were so happy many of you could join us for our meeting and party. We hope we can see all of you at the 1971 Christmas party.

The next item of business was the dress policy for our Saturday night dances. After some discussion, President Dan Balusek asked for a decision on this question. The vote was 41 for staying with the old policy, and none for changing the policy permitting ladies to come in pantsuits. This applies to dances when admission is charged. For socials, meetings, etc., the ladies may come dressed casually.

The three-member resolution committee was re-appointed by the lodge president. These are: Sisters Agnes Moth Adeline Kohutek and myself.

The youth leader's election was postponed because no one was present who was interested in the position. One sister had stated that she was interested, but she was not present, therefore the postponement came about. Maybe the committee will have made a few more contacts before the next meeting on February 7, at 2 p.m. Sister Lillian Hanusch was the door prize winner.

The dedication of the new Supreme Lodge Headquarters Building is set for Sunday, January 31. Our lodge hall will be opened for the public at 10 a.m. with food being served all day.

The ribbon-cutting is at 1 p.m. with the tour of the building following. The rest of the entertainment will be at our lodge hall, with the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra playing first. Then the Eric Honza Orchestra from Ennis will play for the free dance. Plenty of cold beverages will be available. We are needing plenty of volunteers fram our membership to help in the bar, kitchen or parking. If you wish to work, call either Jerry Pechal, Willie Kohutek or Dan Balusek and specify where you wish to help. We are in charge of the bar, the Kohuteks, Willies, and Louises are in charge of the kitchen and Brother Balusek is the general chairman of this project. Our lodge sisters are asked to bring sweets to be served as a dessert on the plates for the meal.

I know you will respond, as always, with pastries. We are looking forward to seeing a whole host of friends from all over the state for this special event.

-SPJST---LODGE. NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members and Friends, I hope this finds everyone well and happy as January is about to come to a close. This first month of the new year has certainly flown by fast for inc. A lot of us have been busy butchering our hogs, and getting that out of the way for another year. There is a lot of work to it, but such good eating afterwards, right?

Our monthly social was held on Friday, January 15, at 7 p.m. We had a Very interesting African safari film shown to us by Tom Simmonds of Temple. Sorry I found out too late about it to put it in the Vestnik. There was a real nice group of members and friends Who came for the evening. After showing his film, Mr. Simmonds answered questions concerning his many trips and experiences in the jungles of Africa. He has many trophies, of which he is proud, but said the last trip he took was his final one. We would like to give him a special thanks for sharing his experiences with us, because many of us will never get a chance to go ourselves.

We enjoyed a delicious sapper brought by the ladies and would like to thank them.

A lot of us enjoyed games and visit"ing for awhile and all seemed to have a nice time. Hope to see that many and more at our next social. I'll remind you of the date later.

Please remember to come to the big opening and dedication ceremonies of our new Supreme Lodge Office Building this Sunday, January 31, at 1:15 p.m. it is such a beautiful building and one which we should all be proud. This is our building, so plan to come and enjoy looking through and seeing the Many items of interest., Otic Beck and His Melody Five will be playing for you at Flag Hall this Saturday, January 30. LODGE NO. 68, WACO Dear Members, The January meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. by Pesident Henry Slovak. A slight delay, but everyone's interest was on the television. Just had to watch those Cowboys.

The lodge motto and pledge of allegiance were led by Julia Slovak and Becky Schiemenz.

All officers were present. The December minutes were approved as read, after a small correction.

Visitors were: Mr. and Mrs. Jim Carter, Mrs. Arthur Leggott, Mr. and Mrs. Tregg Towery, and Grandmother Kapavik. We were very glad to• see her back again. We hope all of you will come again.

A thank-you note was read from Sister Rose Parma.

Brother Silas Smith, president of the board of trustees, had Sister .Engelke to read the minutes of their Monday night, January 3 meeting. They have elected their officers and committeemen and have discussed business and plans for the year.

Brother Frank Miller gave the ticket office report for the last three months and also the yearly report.

Brother Emil Hanus gave the kitchen report. We are really fortunate to have this very nice couple operating the kitchen. They are very efficient and the food is delicious.

Brother Henry Slovak, gave the bar report. He said the walk-in vault is finished and proving to be very beneficial for the hall. He also gave the hall rent report. He complimented the youth for all their help and gifts 'to the hall. They gave $25 toward the March of Dimes and $200 for the paneling of the vestibule. Brother Slovak gave credit to Brother Frank Parma for such a nice job of putting it up.

It really improved the appearance and it looks so nice and clean. The nice mirror donated by Brother Daniel Nors, has really won the compliments from the ladies.

Other reports were given. Sister Libbie Parma gave her end-of-the-year report. She has the pictures of the queen and duchess of 1970 ready to put up, and has several items to be placed in the archives at the Supreme Lodge.

Financial Secretary Darlene Engelke gave a very nice report. As of January 1, we have 995 members. We had a very successful year securing new members. The organizers have been busy

Secretary Annie Hanus gave a report on the Christmas party. We had about 630 or more members and guests present. We are certainly grateful for the members and especially the youth who came in and helped serve. The committee especially appreciated the help, as it was a tremendous job and took a lot of time and planning to get all Who stepped in at the last minute and pitched in, a big thanks, your help made it a successful party.

Youth Leader Betty Slovak said the youth went caroling in West and Bellmead. They had an end-of-the-year dance. About 41 youth went to the March of Dimes Airlift on Sunday, and five of our youth were in the Sole March and completed the 20 , miles.

They were: John Engelke, Kay Gerlich, Debra and Thomas Caller and Becky Sehiemenz, Sister Slovak presented a check from the youth club for $200 to help on the chairs the lodge is buying. They also plan a cake walk at the January dance, during intermission, to raise money for March of Dimes. At the February meeting they will have a game night, and plan to serve hot dogs and chili for the social after the lodge meeting. If members wish to donate a gift for the game, it will be appreciated. The club collected 930 lbs. of glass and will have a rummage sale, during the Easter holidays.

Sister Slovak has selected her assis tants. They are: Sisters Rosie Caller, Martha Slovak and Brother Jim Locke.

Brother James Janousek and his wife will attend the February 12., Friday night social. Sister Janousek will teach the youth how to use the Tn-Chem paints. I am, sure some of us older members will enjoy watching this project.

Brother Eugene Gerlich reported the books have been audited and are all up to date.

The entertainment committee have selected their chairmen for the year and will meet the first Monday night of each month, as the the board of trustees does.

Sister Glenna Dungan, reported the welfare committee had taken food baskets to the S.P.T.S.T. Rest Home in 'Taylor, delivered by Brother and Sister Dungan, and Sister Agnes Mazanec and others. They also carried a basket to the rest home in West, and had taken good cheer baskets to our eltierly and shut-in members.

Our sympathy is with Brother James Pavlicek's family on the loss Of their little granddaughter. Everyone stood in silent prayer. To the parents. our prayers are with you. May God bless you and be with you in your sorrow.

To Brother and Sister Walter Poehls — congratulations on your 50th wedding anniversary which they celebrated Sunday, January 10. All of us wish you many more happy years ahead.

We here at Lodge 66 thank you very much for this lovely and useful gift.

Brother Otto Hanus reported they have moved into the new Supreme Lodge building. They are putting up a pioneer display in the museum and

they need a. cast-iron cookstove. If anyone has one, or knows of one, please let Brother Hanus know about it.

Treasurer — Phil Reames Bro. Henzen announced that he would like to turn over the direction of the choir to Bro. Liska. We will now

have Frank Henzen singing along with us and taking a rest from directing.

He will, however, be our assistant director.

• Those of you who missed this meeting also are not aware of the plans made for the Choral Group. On March 27th there will be a party for you but, you will have to find out about this from someone who came to our meeting. How is that for trying to make our members come out to the meetings more often?

I sent a Get-Well card to Bro. Anton Janousek from the Choral Group.

He is recovering from recent surgery.

In closing, I would like to share with you a poem, which was read to a group of volunteers I work with at a recent meeting I attended. This poem touched our hearts and made our work seem so worthwhile.

Our annual meeting was held on the 10th of January and was very well attended. Sister Tillie IIelmcamo, our new president, who also has the distinction of being the first lady elected to this office at Lodge No. 88 and who was our recording secretary for the past year, covered the annual meeting and other items of interest, in the English section of the Vestnik, so I wrote a shorter summary of same in the Czech section, especially for the benefit or the elderly so they m.ly recall how their lode-c doings were 3 -ported in the days gone by.

The new officers and comroittes are getting accustomed to iieeir new duties and responsibilWes and formulating programs and activitiesfor this year.

But their planning can only succeed to the extent of the membership's wholehearted cooperation. Especially the previous officers and group lead-

12 ors should realize how important it is to receive full support, so let's be truly fraternal.

According to our democratic system of (elections some one may be a little unhappy about the outcome of an election (That's why they invented aspirin?). But, after the elections, the American way is to show our greatness by pulling together for a common cause. Let's follow this principal for the forward progress of our Lodge and the SPJST as a whole.

Comments. and News Many people enjoyed dancing to the Joe Patek music, especially it was gratifying to see so many young people in the crowd. The Sidney Jurcaks from New Orleans, and the Albert Brysons from Ne-edville, were visitors at the Jimmie Zalesky table. Mrs. Jurcak annoticed the marriage of their daughter Vicki, to Larry Zajicek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zajicek of Houston, they are members of 88. Beautiful corsages worn by Mrs. Jurcak and Mrs. Bryson (they are sisters) — to evidence the

wedding occasion.

The big barbecue and battle dance at our lodge, Sunday the 17th, was a successful affair and enjoyed by many.

The chicken barbecue was most delicious, thanks to the barbecue master L. A. Mikes and his helpers. Who seasoned? Yum — Yum. And the kitchen. crew served it in great style with all the good trimmings, thanks. But it Would not be complete without the goody - goody pastries served and donated by these good ladies, Sisters Mary Tilich, Tillie Helmcamp, Marie Elzner, Pearl Hanka, Rose Horelica, Ida Hanka, Marie Kalich, Marian Mikes, Elizabeth and Gale Mikolajewski, Emma Jarisch, Sue High, Mary Fusig, Clara Adamcik, Harriette Allison, Lillian Finn, Sophie Hampel, Evelyn Mikeska, Jesephine Pflughaupt, Louise Knapick, Janie Dvorak, Mrs. James Reed, Annie Vrla, Ann Urbanovsky, Mary Johnson, Birdie Hilsher, Viola Cox, Henrietta 'Veselka, Anna Hoffmann and Ruth Martin ek.

The good coffee and tea girls were Marie Elzner and Ida Hanka, really I don't . see how sister Ida Hanka, at her young a g e and even Marie Elzner, could sit at the eoffe stand that long; did you notice? Maybe mama Hanka was also keeping an eye on her son, Ernest, who was constantly around the kitchen and dining quarters. In fact there were so many good faithful workers that I can't single them out, so many thanks to all for a good job well done.

The dancing started at 2 p . in, to the music of Lee Roy Matocha's orchestra and the Texas Dutchmen, and did they battle it out to a very nice crowd.

Wednesday, January 27, 1971 Among the visitors from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Chas Matcek, Needvine, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Prochazka and Mr, and Mrs. Willie Prochazka from Crosby.

If it haven't been for the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Colts football playoff game, keeping many people glued to their T. V. sets at home, we would have had an over-flowing crowd.

Concerning the game, however, it was a bit unusual, here in Texas it is customary for the cowboys to chase the colts but in this game, the cowboys got ahead at the start and the coils were chasing the cowboys instead. But you can't never tell what a colt will do, they are liable to run over anything and so it happened. The last few seconds of the game, they kicked up their heels and flat ran over the cowboys — well maybe in Florida they do it different, score 16-13.

On the sick list Mrs. Gene Charbula underwent surgery at St. Joseph Hospital and is supposed to be doing nicely, at home now. Mrs. Milton Kalousek, went to Sam Houston Hospital for further checkup but is presumably at home by now.

A bit of cheerful news: Hear that the King Hegwood family, Pama and Mama Fusig and the Willie Malak family, all motored to Las Vegas during the Christmas holidays. They enjoyed a very pleasant trip, besides seeing a lot, along the route. They did not miss taking in some night life in Vegas. But as for the fortune won or lost, some of you, from real • experience know that is everyone's cherished secret.

BIRTHDAY CLUB OF LODGE' NO. 88, HOUSTON Both parties in January turned out wonderful. After the January meeting was opened, the club creed was read by the secretary. It was first introduced to the club by Past President Frances Chalupnk. She also translated the club creed into Czech. Vice-President Tillie Helmcamp took temporary place as the secretary. In the meeting Birdie Hilsher was elected secretary, because Louise Knapick was unable to kee the office. It was decided that a check of 1800 would go to our Lodge No. 88, at

Tillie Helmcamp asked for every .Birthday• Club member to come to the Lodge No. 88 February 8th for the monthly meeting. The Birthday Club will sit together be recognized, so sisters everyone plan to attend. Also a check of $5 goes to KFRD radio station, for the March of Dimes. A round of applause was given to Pearl and Ernie Hanka. A big "Thank You" goes to them for donating the turkeys in our December parties. The birthday club received tow thank you cards, from Am Skrabanek and Anna Jordon. They were read by the secretary, telling how they enjoyed the corsages and pin cushions. Estelle Kelly stood up in the meeting and told how her mother, Daisy Drab, was so proud of her's too: It was decided that the club needed new social equipment. A big "Thank You" goes to Alfred Hilsher for donating part of it. It was brought up in the meeting that Mary Kalousek and Anna Watson were ill. Sisters having birthdays in January are Margaret Bohas, Patsy Baca, Imogene Lero, and Mary Tilich. The Birthday Club welcomed a new member, Sister Louise Chudej, into the club. To keep your year books up to date, her address is 7303 Laredo, 77020, -phone 672-8229, and her birthday is June 4th. There were 26 visitors at the club meeting. We also had some out of towners, Steve Lunak from Danbury, Texas, and Frank Eizner from Malin, Oregon.

The hostesses for January were Marie Elzner, Wanda Elzner, Ann Elzner, Nola Wunderlick, and Della Miksch. Marie Elzner's sweet daughter-in-law Evelyn Kubin, was a lot of help to Marie, working right with her. Thanks for helping Evelyn. Thanks go to Emil Horelica for helping, when help is

13 needed. Emil also told everyone about transportation to the opening and dedication ceremonies, of the Supreme Lodge in Temple, Texas. There will be a chartered bus at Lodge No. 88 on January 31st, to get reservations call Tillie Helmcamp. My apologies go to Lucy Sostak, she baked one of the delicious cakes, donated in December.

The Birthday Club is busy making plans for February, and everyone is invited. Hostesses for February are Della Kadlecek, Josephine Burl, Willie Mae Stang, Imogine Lero, and Louise Chudej. Wednesday Februaiy 3rd is the Birthday Club card party. The menu will consist of baked chicken, mashed potatoes and all the trimmings, including homemade cake and coffee.

Dinner will be $1.25 adults, and 70c children. Wednesday, February 10th is the Birthday Club meeting and social.

Lunch for that day will be '75c adults and 40c children. The time for both parties are 10 a, m. to 2 p. m., with dinner served at noon. Working people on lunch breaks please go straight to the kitchen, to be served immediately. The membership hopes everyone will come and enjoy two wonderful days of entertainment, with the birthday club in February.

Liddie and Steve Kadera had Christmas dinner, at the McKinney Job Corps Center in McKinney, Texas. Their son Dr. George Kadera is the Center Director. Liddie's granddaughter Carolyn Kadera plans to go to Austin College next year. Congratulations to Annie and Herman Baethe, who were warried 61 years this month. They both enjoyed visits from their daughters, during the holidays. They are Regina Muesse of Needville, and Gladys and Bill Craven and family of Longview.

Della's son Johnny Kadlecek was in the hospital for a week, with eye surgery. Everyone was glad to hear the results were satisfactory, and Johnny's at home recuperating. Della was also on T. V.'s Dialing for Dollars, with daughter-in-law Margaret Kadlecek. Margaret was the "Make me over", and returned the next day looking completely different. Della was the

I regret to say that in my recent Exuression of Sympathy to the bereaved family of Kathy Dixon Sanders, I failed to mention that among her survivors she also left a brother, Ray Dixon.

Ray Dixon has been a devoted member of the lodge, constant in his attendance- and a number of duties in various 'committees which he undertook to fulfil.

I hope my apologies are accepted.

My second request is made to correct two errors. I will ask the editor of the Vestnik to refer to my recent commentary on "Muziky, Muziky."

In one paragraph I wrote, "Many of the talented perforMers with a professional background advanced (not advised accordingly."

And again in the last paragraph, it should have read as follows: "The life of our club would have disintegrated long ago had we limited its membership to professional performers as (and not at) the expense of supporting (and in some cases , imparting) professional actors is as prohibitive to the club as is the price of admission to members."

The year has gone by so quickly that a person can hardly realize how fast it has gone. There was a great deal of hard work, requiring a lot of time; but the jobs were done. I am very happy to say that we went over our quota. very successfully, selling 245 members for a total of $532,000. I want to congratulate all you fellow-workers on such fine work.

Sister Ewell was our top organizer for December, and she also is a top month club for 36 months.

In the past year we also had twelve new organizers to make their first sales. We also gained a new lodge, Rockdale No. 174. All in all, 1970 was a very productive year in District, II. Brother Henry Vitek sold the most insurance in December with 2: members for $15,000. Brother E. J. Geistman and Brother John Plasek tied for second place with 1 member for $15,000 each. As you know, in my report as of December 1, 1970, we were still $123,500 short of meeting our quota, but finally, before the end of December we did meet the quota and e‘ven went over by $83,500. I personally want to thank all of you organizers who did such a fine

job, this year and helped us to go over our quota. Let's all remember to set our own quota for the year 1971, and let's go over them! Let's all get ent iusiaLtie about selling SPJST; let's not sleep on the job. Let's start the new year with a bang. Remember when you sill someone you are helping them by giving them the best insurance available. Always back up your sales with good service and by keeping in touch with your clients.

I was sorry to hear that some of the organizers have been ill. I hope you are all feeling better by now.

Our District V meeting has been set for March 14, 1971 at 1:30 p.m. at Lodge 142. Please circle this date and come out and support your district. Also an'other big date to circle is March 28, 1971. We will have the dedication of our new lodge - Fort Bend Lodge No. 175. Watch for details on this in the Vestnik.

Before closing I want to mention the wedding of Betty Jean Zabcik and Gregory Gene Hall in Temple at the :Ocker Brethren Church and the reception at Lodge 24, Cyclone. The wedding was just beautiful. We enjoyed being there very much and want to wish the newlyweds the best of everything!

Again I want to say thank you for a wonderful job done for the year 1670.

After some discussion, it was agreed to accept the bid from a local nursery, except to eliminate the jasmine border along the south boundary of the parking let and set out magnolia trees 10 feet high, in place of 15 to 18 feet high.

President Morris reported that he had a telephone call from Architect Voelter and he recommended that we reduce the number of magnolia trees and set out trees of another variety in place of th.ern, because the thick foliage of magnolias would obscure the beauty of the building. .,After some discussion about which trees are to be set out, it was agreed to leave the selection of trees to the officers of the Supreme Lodge.

After some dismission and comments by all, it was agreed to set the date of the formal opening on Jan. 31st, 1971.

President Morris brought up the prepared invitations and program brochure, and went over the entire program for our formal opening. He asked whom the board wishes to appoint as Master of Ceremonies. Bro. Reuben Talasek was recommended.

After some discussion, it was agreed to appoint Reuben Talasek as the MC for the formal opening.

It was agreed for President Morris to attend to the invitations for the formal opening, President Morris tributed the invitation he had prepared for businesses and fraternal societies, etc., and after two small changes, it was approved.

President Morris stated that he did not think it was necessary to send

Wednesday, January 27, 1971. invitations to the local lodges and he presented an invitation to the membership and general public which would appear in the Vestnik. This invitation was approved. The 4- panel program brochure was also approved.

President Morris brought up the flag pole at the new building and explained that it would be necessary for someone to put the flag up and take it down every day, and that it would appear as if our building was a state or federal office, and that he believes it would be better not to put up a flag pole. It was agreed not to have a flag pole.

It was agreed to devise some means of displaying a flag on the proper dates. President; Morris will ask Archi-• feet Voelter to work this out.

President Morris called attention to the proposals of the Youth Camp Committee made to the last convention and adopted. It was recommended by the Youth Camp Committee at that time to appoint a 3-member permanent Youth Camp Committee in the Supreme Lodge meeting in January, 1971.

He asked the members of the board to have their own choices ready in January.

Treasurer Mikeska reported that he had 'bids for moving.

It was agreed to let the Supreme Lodge officers select the most reliable firm.

President Morris reported that 11,636 calendars have been mailed out and the cost for postage was $260.04. (Last year, the postage cost was $252.23)..

President Morris read thank-you notes from Bro. W. A. Nesuda for the $50.00 contribution to the Dallas Czech Class, and also a letter of thanks from Texas A&M University for the scholarship fund.

President Morris reported that the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. requested payment for the 53rd week of 1909, for printing . the Vestnik, in the amount of $940.19. It was agreed to pay this amount.

Based on the board's mandate in the Oct. 1970 meeting, President Morris brought up the printing of the Vestnik in 1971, and read a letter he wrote to Bro. Holasek and a letter received from Bro. Holasek, concerning a bid for printing the Vestnik. He read articles from the by-laws and from the convention proceedings relating to publication of the Vestnik. He told of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Holasek's visit here the

Holasek contends that the Supreme Lodge cannot enter into a contract with another publisher, and that only the price is negotiable and that he is willing to negotiate. Bro. Holasek said lie felt the delegates gave an a con1-, tract in Dallas, Figures were presented from another publisher for the printing of the VestMk. One part of the bid would result in a net saving of appreximately $12,000 a year:using the present format, a better grade of newsprint, plus several other features, all to the benefit of the SPJST, including payment of all postage.

Another part of the bid would result in 'a net saving of approximately $19,000 a year, using a different format, but with the same content size, better grade of paper, plus several other features, all to the benefit of the SPJST, including payment of all postage.

It was emphasized that we are not trying to break the contract with Cechoslovak Publishing Co. but that we want to negotiate a price for printing of Vestnik for 1971.

It was stated we should go to Bro. Holasek• and advise him that we have a bid of several thousand dollars less than we are now paying.

It was stated that we have a right to offer the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. a certain sum, for printing the Vestnik, and if they cannot meet our price, the contract could be terminated.

It was agreed to write to Bro. Jos. F. Holasek, President of the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. in regards to the printing of the Vestnik, 'and advise him that we have a bid that would save the SPJST several thousand dollars and due to the cost differential, it becomes necessary for us to negotiate with them a new agreement on cost per issue for 1971. Further, that we request a reply, in writing, within 20 days.

It was stated that in negotiating a new price rate with the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. that they be requested to submit their absolute minimum price proposal.

It was agreed that in the event of price negotiation, the maximum price we would accept per member would be $3.50 annually, including all postage, mailing, dispatching, etc., with the present format.

It was agreed that all officers and

17 directors, and their spouses, and all the office personnel will wear name tags for the formal opening of our new building. The Supreme Lodge, SPJST will furnish corsages from the spouses of the officers and directors, and also for the office personnel.

Director Sralla expressed thanks to all for what they did for him during his illness, especially Dirs. Ilanka and Kubena for taking care of the appraisals in his district, and also thanked Directdr Pokladnik for 'all his help while he was in the hospital in Dallas.

President Morris asked each member if he had anything else to bring 'before the board. There being no response, he wished all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and he further stated that this is the last meeting; in the old building. He wished all a safe journey home. Adjourned at.

4. Be sure to teach your members how to perform the role or assignment if they don't know how.

5. Provide the opportunity for newer and younger inexperienced members to serve on a committee where they can gain experience before giving them a big assignment.

6. Promote a friendly and helpful group spirit where no one ridicules one who makes a mistake.

7. Keep the lines of communication Open.

8. Develop the group standard of "everyone participates."

FROM THE LODGE YOUTH LEADERS LODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers, The members of the Robstown Youth Club extend best wishes for a happy new year to all our friends throughout the state.

Our year got off to a rollicking start with a sock hop held January 8 at the home of the youth leader. Attendance was limited to members in the 6th through 8th grades. The recorded music catered to both 'kicker' and 'surfer' fans. Each guest received an invitation made in the shape of a sock. He was instructed to wear colored bobby sox and bring a white one which he had gaily decorated. During the party, members voted on the three best. First place went to Karla Germer, who trimmed her's with buttons, fringe, and decorations to form a horse's head, mounted on a stick. Second. place went to Holly Harvey, whose sock was gaily trimmed with felt flowers and paint.

Third place went to Wayne Wright, 'who had fashioned his sock into a stuffed foot, with toes and nailpolish.

Besides dancing, games and relays were enjoyed by the twenty-five youth

clubbers present. Refreshments consisted of hot dogs, donuts, cokes, and the trimmings. Sponsors were Mesdames G. A. Elliff, Joe Cotten, Lonnie Cardwell, Bill Harvey and the youth leader, On Saturday, January 16, our regular meeting was held at the Presbyterian Fellowship Hall. David Hrricir, president, presided at the meeting. Outdoor games and crafts were enjoyed later. A new soccer ball was well initiated.

Our next fun event will be a skating party Saturday, January 30. We will leave on the SPee-JeST at 3 p.m. and return at 7. Cost will be $1 (includes skating fee) for members whose dues have been paid, and $1.25 for other members and guests. This is always a well-attended activity and you are invited to bring friends along.

Our hayride and caroling party held the Saturday before Christmas turned out better than. the planning committee ever dreamed! Fifty-six young people were loaded on a trailer and the back of a pick-up. We drove through the streets of Robstown, singing carols and enjoying the lovely evening spent with friends. We returned to the Fellowship Hall where Mrs. Harry Rychetoky, mother of our refreshment chairman, Dena, was waiting with hot chocolate, cookies, and chips. A large roaster held hot peanuts in the yard.

Sponsors besides the leader and her assistant, were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Kelley and Mrs. Charles, Tenpenny.

Everyone thought it was great fun, and the Christmas lights about our city never looked prettier!

Plans are incomplete for bringing the youth club to the dedication on January 31, but even if it doesn't work will out to bring the bus, some surely be there. For now, this should cover most of our latest activities, hope to see and visit with many of you at the coming dedication!

Dear Readers, The youth of Lodge No. 169 of Brenham had a very successful Christmas program with all of the youth participating. A welcome was given by the youth leader (Jean Kubiale —Ed.) and

by Patsy Bednar, president of the local club. The title of the program was the First Christmas, with Linda Schmid,

The recitations included "Up or Down" by Albert Martin; "I's Too Small" by Ginger Bednar, Aneyea Pomykal, Kellen and Chris Kocurek; "Christmas Riddle" by Clarence Majewski, Donald Bednar, Theresa and Michael Martin, Annette Bilski, Jennifer Giles, Brice Pomykal and Julie Zientek. Next on the program was the "Handk6rchlief Brigade" with Chris and Kellen Kocurek, Cecilia, Julie and Maxine Zientek, Jennifer Giles, Theresa, Michael and Albert Martin, Bonnie and Annette Bilski, Julie, Cindy and Susie Hrachovy; "Santa Goes on Strike" with Mr. Emil. Kocurek as Santa, Patrick ,Schmid as the newsboy, Catherine Januszewski, Donald Bednar and. Deidra Kocurek as the speakers and all the youth club as the "sad faces."

Next, "Happy Birthday, Dear Jesus" was recited by Deidra Kocurek and "Silent Night" was sung by the entire youth club. The accompanist for the program was Miss Kathy Dycus on her guitar, with Mrs. Emil Kocurek aiding and assisting with practices. Costumes were taken care of by Mrs. Edwin Schmid and Mrs. Alois Zientek. Letters for the Christmas Riddle were made

by Mrs. Raymond Bednar and ties for the boys to wear were made by Mrs. Frank Pomykal.

A big thank you goes out from me to all the mothers who helped, to the youth for coming to practices and for doing such an outstanding job in learning their parts, to Kathy for providing the music, to Mr. Kocurek for portraying Santa (especially his "Ho, Ho, Ho's), to all the parents who let their children participate, and to all who came to see the program. I am very proud of the youth and their work and hope to have more programs in the future.

A meeting will be held in the near future to finish their plaques of foil art and to make plans 'for a party or hayride.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Lodge No. 169 held its Christmas party on December 11, 1970. The youth gave a program. The different plays Were: Handkerchief Bragade, Santa Goes on Strike. Before the program was over we presented a manger scene. Dedia Kocurek said a story pertaining to the life of Christ. Mrs. Bendar, Mrs. Kocurek and Miss Kathy Dycus came to practices and helped us. Miss Dycus played the guitar- at the party.

Everyone ate, then Santa Caine and gave all the children something. Then the youth exchanged gifts. The adults also exchanged gifts. Everyone had a good time.

Dear Readers, On Sunday, January 10, 1971, the youth of Lodge No. 4 held their monthly meeting. The meeting was called to order by our president, Marcie Holy.

The secretary then read the roll call and the minutes of the two previous Meetings. The treasurer 'then gave his report. The president read a letter from the Ennis lodge. The youth leader then reported on the Christmas booties we sent to rest home residents.

She reported that the people were all very glad to receive them. We also discussed our program to be held for the mother lodge at the next meeting.

'There was also some discussion on the 'District VI spring meeting and the District Vi YAD. The president also welcomed a new member into our club.

It was also decided that our club would sell tickets to the musical "Muziky, Muziky."

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Carol Janik and Vicki Parker who have a birthday in January.

An upcoming activity will be the rodeo. A date will be set later.

Members, keep collecting those aluminum cans and save your paper.

It is a lot of fun to go out looking for cans, and besides, sometimes it is very profitable. My mother found a wrench and my sister found a dollar bill. All that I found, besides cans, was a little snake curled up inside one of the cans. Really, though, it is worth your time and effort, so save those cans and paper and bring them to our meetings.

The minutes were read, and stood approved as read. Then thetreasurer's report was given.

Under new business there was a motion to have a skating party. We will also invite Dime Box to go with us. It will be on February 7, from 6 to 8 in Rockdale.

For the next meeting, on Valentine's Day, everyone will have to make a Valentine decoration. There will be prizes given to the ones who have the best. After the meeting, we will have a party. The meeting was adjourned.

Old and new business was discussed. Our new business was the musical to be held in El Campo on January 24, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The meeting was then. adjourned. Following the meeting, several different games were played. The January door prize was won by Kenneth Valigura.

We discussed buying some playground equipment for the money we made on Family Day. A decision was made to get some equipment.

Each members is asked to bring something to paint with Tri-Chem at our next meeting. We will also have a short program for the mother lodge. We had a lot of birthdays in January. Melisa Holy won our birthday cake. The door prizes were won by Mrs. Ernest Meyer (adult), and Arlene Zak (children's prize).
