Too often we stress the need for public relations. However, we stress too little on human relations, a term we hear almost every day and which begins with the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!" "Doing unto others . . ." is a good start if there is just a little consideration and common brotherhood, which sets an example — and which is transmitted to others and add depth to our public image which publicity cannot; create if it is not there in the first place, alienated by any act •or acts that serve to corrode its progress as a destructive acid and which paralyzes and prevents normal growth. Let us therefore strive to go ahead as a team, feeling vitality in our veins rather than letting anything unhealthy dissipate our energy which must be channelled constructively without distortion of facts or conform to any single individual's plan or glory.

Success is a normal and commendablehuman aspiration. Every individual needs to find some pride of accomplishment in what he does. The desire to serve a useful purpose in life is one of the most deeply-rooted human instincts, and the achievement of this objective in reasonable measure is one of the most satisfying experiences man can have. A man needs to have these social and moral purposes to disteaguish him from all other :rums of life.

Unless an individual feels that his work has importance and usefulness to otbers, he becomes frustrated and ineffective.

Wednesday, January 6, 1971 The frontier today has changed, but there are still frontiers to be conquered. They may not be geographical frontiers, but rather, frontiers of the mind and spirit, and pioneers are needed as never before. The frontiers of the human mind are just beginning to open up. If we are to conquer them, we must seek out and encourage the "uncommon man" who is found, most usually, in the ranks of the so-called "common people."

They used to make fun of him. "Is that pest here again?" Nobody wanted to see the insurance man. Few were even polite to him. Then nature went on a rampage. Hurricanes, floods, explosions and fires. Suddenly folks found that insurance men were their best friends, that the policy really was as good as it had been represented.

Many people don't know it, but there are several ways a beneficiary may receive the proceeds of a life insurance policy.

When a life insurance policyholder dies, the entire amount of his policy becomes payable immediately to his benificiary, unless the policyholder has specified otherwise.

His beneficiary is most often his wife, who will need money quickly for final expenses.

If the family's savings or other resources do not cover her immediate bills, she can turn to her husband's life insurance. But, if she doesn't need all the proceeds at once, there may be good reasons not to take the entire amount in a single lump sum.

A beneficiary has several other choices under the "settlement options" of life insurance, which offer considerable flexibility in meeting a widow's money problems. The family's life insurance agent can help her make the best choice.

Of course, even if she is experienced at handling money, it may be difficult for her to make vital financial decisions under the shock and grief of a recent death. And, particularly if she is a younger woman, she may not really be able to gauge her long-term financial needs.

So she can leave part or all of the money with the life company until she needs it or •decides how to use it.

LETTERS LODGE NO. 24, CYCLONE Dear Members, I hope everyone of you had a very happy holiday season full of joy and laughter. May it continue all year through for you and your loved ones.

Now things will begin to settle down once again. and we will resume our normal activities. I always hate to see this season come to an end, because there are so many things to look forward to, and so many parties going on.

First of all, we want to send out a warm welcome to Martha Zavodny.

We are very glad to have her as a new member of our lodge. She will surely be an asset to our lodge in the future. We hope this year we will have many new members join us.

We would like to remind you of our monthly social which will be Friday, January 15, at '7 p.m. We are looking forward to seeing many of you out that night, The ladies are asked to please bring sandwiches, cake, pie or whatever is convenient for you, so that we may enjoy a little lunch after the play cards, dominoes, or other games.

If you would rather not play any games, then just attend anyway and enjoy friendly fellowship. We feel you will have a good time by just being there. I think everyone looks forward to these monthly get-togethers.

We would also like to remind you of our regular monthly meeting which will be held Sunday, January 10, at 2 p.m. We would appreciate it if you would do your best to attend. We need to discuss some important plans for the lodge, which we shall tell all of you about soon. Our secretary, E. J. Bedrich, will be giving out Novemberissued premium refund checks. Some of you may want to come and get yours at the meeting, but if you are unable to attend, please send a self-addressed and stamped envelope to E. J. Bedrich, 1203 North 12th St., Temple, Texas 76501. He will be glad to send it on to you.

These monthly meetings are a necessity to keep our lodge growing and up to date with our fellow lodges. Our members are very much a necessity since they actually make up the lodge and how much of a success it will be depends mainly on them. Our newly enlarged hall is a great beginning for our members to work with and try to make it even a bigger and more successful lodge. We need the help of each and every member. Please make

an effort to do your part and our lodge will grow continuously. The youth club also plays an important part, so bring your children and let them enjoy the worthwhile activities and projects our youth leaders plan for them.

Congratulations to Shirley and Johnny Kelarek on the arrival of a little son, Larry Wayne, born Dec. 20 in a Rosebud hospital. Larry weighed 7 pounds and 12 ounces at birth. Mother and baby are both reported doing fine. The proud grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. .John Kelarek and Mr. and Mrs. Joe R. Schneider.

It was good news to hear that Henry Cabla, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Cable, Sr., arrived home safe and sound after a tour of duty in Vietnam.

It was especially nice that he made it home just in time to have Christmas with his family and loved ones. Welcome home, Henry!

Dear Members, Our meeting came to order at 2:30 pan. on December 13. President Clifton Trlica presided at the meeting, held in the home of Miss Josephine Doubrava in the,Olmos Community. We have always held our meetings at the Milos Club House , but it was damaged so badly by Hurricane Celia on August 3, that we cannot meet there. The windows were broken out, the chimney is down, and the roof is damaged. The weather was cold on the day of our meeting, so it was impossible to meet there.

Brother Jos. Koliha attended this meeting from Temple. We were glad that he could come to our meeting from so far away, when the weather was so bad. He has been under the weather for some time and we are

glad he is doing so well. It was good to have him with us again.

Our next meeting will be in March; we haven't decided where we will meet, but I would appreciate it very much if we would meat at my house again.

Eleven members were at this meeting and all enjoyed themselves. Refreshments were: cake, cookies, pies, kolaches, and coffee.

This meeting being so close to the Christmas season, the hostess had a large Christmas tree in the living room.

Dear Members, The December meeting was 'called to order at 3 p.m. by President Henry Slovak. The lodge motto and pledge of allegiance was led by the boys in the youth club.

Visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Marek, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Parma, and Mr. Louis Jaska. Hope you will visit us again.

All officers were present and the minutes of the November meeting were approved as read, after a correction was made.

Thank-you notes were read from Reicher High School, the Anton Zatopek family, Pat and Lila Pinter, and a Christmas greeting from Bro. Rudy Sefcik and family. Also, a letter from the Temple Telegram, asking us to place an ad in the special tabloid that will be printed for the dedication of the new Supreme Lodge Headquartrs Building.

Bro. Otto Harms thanked everyone who helped at the Christmas party. A special 'thanks' to Bro. Leon Hensel, who worked in the kitchen, getting it organized, and to all of the adults and youths who helped. You all did a splendid job and it was really appreciated.

It takes a lot of help to carry out the plans of such a large project.

Bro. Frank Miller had Sister Engelke to read the minutes of the board of trustees' meeting held on Thursday night, December 3. Bro. Parma reported on all the improvements made during the year, such as repairs, paneling, painting, additions added on, and the project now in the making. We are really fortunate to have members, who are good carpenters, painters, electricians, and handymen and can get these projects completed, and also all

Sister Libbie reported the youth club reports have been turned in for the end of the year. Sister Parma had a thank-you note from the rest home for the donation sent by the youth club.

She said items had come in for the food baskets, which would be made up and delivered and the rest of the food would be turned over to the Welfare Committee. Sister Parma read a letter from the Supreme Lodge concerning getting items, pictures and clippings about the youth club, its history and events, to be placed in the Archives at the Supreme Lodge Building. It was voted that Sister Parma be in charge of this project because she is familiar with all of the information.

Sister Parma said she was resigning, at this time, as youth leader because she thought a new youth leader should start at the first of the year, in order to have full cooperation of the youth club. Sister Parma has been a youth club leader for eleven years.

She has been a very efficient leader and the youth club has really been prosperous. We wish Sister Parma the best of success on this new project and we know she will do a perfect job.

The youth club will hold an end-ofthe-year dance on December 27.

Health Committee, Sister Agnes Mazanec, reported that Sister Marie Losak, is in the hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. Cards were sent to Sharon Schiemenz, who was in the hospital, and Brother Engelke, who has been ill, but is doing okay. Sister Mazanec said they would deliver goodcheer baskets to our elder members and visit them.

Congratulations to Brother and Sister Frank Parma on their 35th wedding anniversary, which was December 15.

We wish them many more happy anniversaries.

It will soon be finished. He thanked everyone who had come out and helped build it.

Our Friday night socials were discussed. They will be held on the second and fourth Fridays of each month. The first one will be on Friday night, January 8, and the other on Friday night, *January 22. You are asked to bring sandwiches, chips, dips or desserts for the social. Everyone who comes out is to put in a donation for the beverages used that night. They will start about 7 or 7:30 p.m. You can play dominoes, cards or other games.

Brother Ed Mazanec gave a report on the Publication Committee — what they do and have done in the past.

Brother Otto Hanus said the new SL Headquarters Building is progressing rapidly and will have the dedication on January 31, 1911.

Sister Engelke gave out refund checks, and she has the new 1971 membership cards. You must pick them up at the lodge meetings or at the ticket office on Saturday nights.

Brother Ed Mazanec installed the new lodge officers for 1971.

Birthdays for December were: Lori Slovak, Steven Stanislav, Jeanette Smith, Debra Galler and Floyd Dove.

The cake was baked by Mrs. Baird's bakery. We wish each of you a happy birthday.

I hope everyone had a merry Christmas and will have a prosperous new year. Let's all work together and make 1971 very successful. Together we can stride forward, so please take an interest in your lodge and support its projects. We need everyone to help, so take pride in whatever committee you are on and lend a hand when it is needed. Together, we can go forward, but with just a few doing everytAing Won't get the job done.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, The members of Lodge 88 were saddened on December 24 by the sad news that Kathy Dixon Sanders passed away that morning. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to her husband, Clarence Sanders, son Robert Wayne, parents Dorothy and Abner Dixon, sister Frances, brother Ray, and other relatives.

Kathleen Dixon Sanders, known to her many friends as Kathy, was born in Houston on December 7, 1949 and lived in Houston all of her life. She was an outstanding student at Spring Branch High, where she was an assistant to the head of the school's business department, winning a special award in her business class. Kathy played on the school volleyball team and was manager of the team one year. Her dependability and her kind consideration for all made her a favorite with the teachers and the students. She graduated in June, 1968.

Kathy was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Elie was a member of our lodge all of her life arid was very active in cur Teen Club. Kathy was an excellent reporter for the Teen Club, helped with the teen dances, and worked at the swimming pool the first summer it opened, working hard with others in setting up the records for the pool. In 1966, Kathy was elected lodge princess and fulfilled her duties graciously. It was also in 1966, that she received the high honor of being the State Teen winner in the Points Contest.

Kathy and Clarence Sanders were married in a beautiful wedding in June, 1968. Last year they bought a home at 1941 Gloridge. They have one son, Robert Wayne, who is 22! months old. In February of this year, Kathy became ill with leukemia, and since

VESTNfK that time she was in and out of M. D. Anderson Hospital; she had been in a coma the past three weeks.

On December 4, the youth had a benefit dance for Kathy, and hundreds of her friends were glad they had a chance to participate in this great fraternal deed. Kathy was in the hospital very ill, and so . didn't get to see the beautiful program planned in her honor and to which our Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris added so much with his beautiful poem on fraternal deeds.

Those of us who visited Kathy during her illness realized what a great patient she was: brave and kind and always smiling and making others feel better. It was easy to see that she was loved dearly by the nurses and all who came in contact with her. Yes, Kathy, our fine and loyal member, will be greatly missed in our lodge.

The Christmas program was very nice and Sister Mary Hubenak and her assistant, should be congratulated for their effort with the youth. I am sure Sister Hubenak will report who the participants were. After the program, Santa came and gave sacks of goodies to all present, and our hostesses served punch, cookies, and coffee.

Thanks to everyone, who helped with the preparation of the enjoyable evening.

In my last letter, I wrote that Brother John Chaloupka was seriously ill, and before my letter was published he passed away. We, extend to the bereaved family our sincere sympathy, from our lodge brothers and sisters, and ours, too. May our departed brother rest in peace.

Members voted to send $10 each to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville, and $5 to the V.A. Hos:pital in Dallas.

Sister Dona Hubenak, our treasurer, reported that the turkey which she and her husband, Raymond Hubenak, donated and auctioned off at our Thanksgiving dinner brought $21 to our treasury, for which we are grateful to both of them.

The Reseda Dancers of Lodge 88 danced. Then we were joined by the Choral Club of Lodge 88's youth dePartment to sing a medley Of Christmas carols. Peggy Mahacek. of Lodge 142 did an outstanding job on her new accordion with "Frosty, The Snowman," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "White Christmas," and many others. I am happy and proud to report that all the active youth participated in the program and did a splendid job.

I also wish to thank my asistants for their help. Also the Kentucky fried chicken supper was delicious.

Our January 10 meeting will be at the Sherwood Bowling Lanes. Let us try to be there about 1:30, so we can have our meeting before we bowl.

On December 6, the youth club toured one of our newest hospitals here in San Angelo, St. John's Hospital. It has been completely remodeled, having the latest facilities. Also

v fISTNflt LODGE NO. 13, DIME BOX Dear Readers, On December 28 our youth club went Skating from 6 to 8 p.m. We also invited the New Taber Youth Club to go with us.

We held our monthly meeting on December 23. The meeting was called to order by our vice-president. The pledge and moment of silent prayer was said by all present. Old and new business were discussed. After the meeting, we had our Christmas party.

The presents were handed out and bags with fruit and candy, also.

Our youth club also went Christmas caroling on December 23. We started out about 6 p.m. and ended back at the hall at 9 p.m., where refreshments were waiting. It wasn't the warmest night of the year, but we managed to go to almost every house in Dime Box before everyone froze. I think it picked up the Christmas spirit for everyone.

LODGE NO. 30, TAITON Dear Vestnik Readers, On the 16th of December we had our SPJST Christmas party. We had a supper and it was very good. We had chicken, tea, gelatin, take. slaw, beaus, pickles, cookies and coffee.

At the end of the party we had a Christmas play that some of the members put on. I was the reindeer named "Donner." At the end of the play all of the members sang "Jingle Bells.'!. had a very lovely time at the party.

Following the program, Santa Claus paid us a visit.

Presents were handed out by dear ole' Santa himself and everyone received an orange and an apple. Then Santa had to depart, so we will have to wait another year for him to pay us a visit. Funeral services for Brother Bayer were held from the Sichw,enke'-Baumgarten Funeral Chapel Sunday, Dec. 6 at 11:15 am. Rev. O'Callaghan officiated with services at St. Rose Catholic Church and burial was in the Dubina Catholic Cemetery. Legionnaires of American Legion Post No. 143 Schulenburg, of which he was a member, served as pallbearers.

Bro. Bayer was born June 14, 1909 the son of the late Julius and Elizabeth Bayer. After being discharged from the armed services, Brother Bayer resided in Houston and there became a member of the SPJST in Lodge 88. He moved to Schulenburg five years ago and transferred his membership to our Lodge No. 67. At the time of his death Brother Bayer had reached the age of 61 years, 5 months, and 20 days.

Surviving Brother Bayer are two sisters, Mrs. John (Mary) Kainer of El Campo and Mrs. Gene (Martha) McNeese of Pasadena, Texas, and three brothers, Joe Bayer of Schulenburg, Eddie Bayer of Houston, and Emil Bayer of La Grange.

Sprinkle with cheese. Roll from shorter side, as for jelly roll; press ends to seal. Carefully transfer to baking pan, seam side down. Bake 45 minutes.

Pour remaining tomato sauce over meat; sprinkle with dill seed. Bake 15 additional minutes; let stand 10 minutes. Remove to warm platter.

Peachy Orange Cheesecake Pie Pie plate — 9 inch Saucepan — 1 qt.

Pre-heated 350° oven Crust: 1 1/3 cups graham cracker crumbs (16 squares) 2 tablespoons sugar I/1 cup ( IA stick) butter, melted Filling: 1 tablespoon (1 envelope) unflavored gelatin 2 tablespoons water 1/2 cup sugar 1 egg yolk 1/2 cup frozen Concentrated orange juice, thawed 1 1/2 cups cottage cheese 1/2 cup whipping cream, whipped 1 egg white 2 tablespoons sugar Sweetened sliced peaches To prepare crust: In a small bowl mix together crumbs and sugar; stir in butter. Reserve 2 tablespoons crumbs for garnishing ple; press remaining mixture firmly and evenly against bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie plate, building up slightly around rim. Bake 5 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

To prepare filling: Soften gelatin in Water. Meanwhile, in a 1-quart saucepan combine 1/2 cup sugar, egg yolk and orange juice. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (about 3 minutes). Remove from heat; add softened gelatin; stir until dissolved. Cool. In a large mixing bowl beat cottage cheese until smooth; beat in gelatin mixture; fold in whipped cream. In a small mixing bowl beat egg white until foamy; gradually add 2 tablespoons sugar and beat until stiff. Fold into cottage cheese mixture.

-SPJSTHUNTERS' PARADISE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA The part of central Europe covered

by Slovakia is relatively small. However, its flora and fauna are uniquely diversified, reaching from the cultivated stepes of the West Slovakian lowlands right up to the high-altitude cliffs of the High Tatras. The forests lining the banks of the Danube river often hardly differ from impenetrable jungles while high mountain forests none too rarely never heard the sound of human steps. That is why one can see in Slovakia even very rare species of animals known in other countries only from books or zoological gardens.

For obvious reasons, Slovakia well deserves to be called a hunters' paradise. Actually, the hunting season lasts all the year around. In winter, when other game is protected by law, hunters seek out fox and lynx, polecat and marten, take a shot at a hawk, try to snare a muskrat.. .

But come the spring... what a feast!

The foretaste of the season is offered by the snipe. No hunter can ever forget the time at daybreak or in the gathering dusk of an early evening in spring spent, gun in hand, waiting for the cock to fly closer making the characteristic clucking sound. Snipes come to Slovakia from the. Mediterranean where they have their main nesting grounds. However, a lot of snipes also nest in our well-irrigated forests and even in the hilly parts of the country.

The bear hunts come soon after the spring snip e shoots. Bears live in heavily forested areas in central and eastern Slovakia. Fifteen beasts are shot every year out of the estimated total of al'out four hundred.

In April and May hunters spend days and nights in mountainous areas where the biggest forest fowl, the wood grouse, is in the midst of mating season. Experts estimate there are about four thousand of these rare birds. Aside from them, there are about nine thousand black grouse, mainly in the Liptov and Orava districts. As for the smallest member of this family, the mourtain crane, it is to be found in all the -uniting grounds of central and eastern Slovakia as well as in the White Carpathian mountains.

VESTN!E ostrov may be found the biggest European bird — the great bustard. Cocks weigh as much as fifteen kilograms (over thirty pounds). The great floods of 1965 considerably depleted their numbers. Nevertheless, even now more than 1100 birds nest in the vicinity of the towns of Komarno, Nove Zamky, kola, Zeliezovce, 8titrovo, Dunajska Streda, Trnava and even close to Bratislava. There is a bustard • reserve near the town of Komarno administered by the Slovak Hunters' Union.

The roebuck season starts in the second half of May. Incidentally, due to the extensive consolidation of land holdings within the framework of agricultural cooperatives, roedeer are gradually leaving the forests and returning to their original habitat — the steppee, 1. e. the huge fields where they find abundant food, shelter and where even winters are less severe. Counting only the spring parent stock, it is estimated there are about a quarter of a million of roedeer.

In summertime, many hunters highly prize the wild-duck shoots. Ducks are abundant not only along our rivers but also on the growing number of new lakes and water reservoirs. For a few years there was a ban on partridge shooting, but now it has been lifted.

PaIrtridge has started to adapt to changed conditions and Slovak hunters are seeking new ways to help its propagation. They protect its nests, introduce semi-wild and artificial breeding, etc.

The red-deer mating season starts at the end of summer This is the time of the year most prized by big game hunters. Red deer have considerably grown in numbers, the number of spring-time parent stock reaching about 11,000. Using great ingenuity, gamekeepers and breeding experts have succeeded in raising the quality and value of the trophies. The most valuable ones, their CIC rating exceeding 240 points, come from central Slovakia.

Fallow deer have come to feel quite at home in Slovakia. There are about six thousand of them. The smart chamois may be found in high-altitude localities in the High, Belanske and ptovske Tatras. There are supposed to be about 1,200 animals in the High Tatras alone. The moufflons, originally imported from Corsica and Sardinia, have found better living environment in Slovakia than in the lands of their origin. There are about six thousand

The commonest small game is the hare. None too rarely hunting parties naving as five hundred a day. Live hares are also exported, as well as some pheasants and partridges. They bring in about a million US dollars annually Pheasant is another highly popular small game. Lately it has been propagating so successfully that its parent stock in spring reaches, as a rule, seven hundred thousands.

Not even the larger animals of prey are lacking. Thus, for instance, lynx may be hunted in Slovakia all the year round. It is estimated that there are about 800 lynxes and 2,700 polecats in Slovakia. In the Sp gska Magura mountains and in the foothills of Vihorlat in eastern Slovakia one may encounter even the dark-grey tramp of the Carpathians — the wolf. As for wild boars, they are rather common in almost all Slovak hunting areas.

Needless to say, the achievements of the Slovak gamekeeping are due to the systematic care of hunters, game keepers, and last, but not least, the financial backing provided by the state over a period spanning several decades.

Over 200 communities in the United States are following a trend started in Europe 15 years ago. They use these big 4-cubic foot capacity paper bags for all of their refuse around the home or in industrial commercial or institutional locations — wherever refuse is generated. Mayor John V. Lindsay, New York City, after an extensive testing program of paper and plastic sacks is directing a multi-million dollar promotional plan to encourage the citizenry of New York to use at least 5 million refuse sacks per week. Why does a city government go to this trouble?

It is simple. The already overburdened sanitationman can almost double the number of collections in a day and he won't lift several tons of steel per day doing it. On snowbound days when the trash collector can't get around his route and the trash piles up, a supply of paper refuse sacks will still neatly contain any amount of refuse until the truck arrives. So you see why these sacks are called "Collectors Items".

Sanitationmen love the paper refuse sack. In addition, the City will look cleaner and be cleaner. With a fresh new bag after each collection there will be fewer "lunch stops" for rats and fewer flies and other insects commonly seen around garbage.

In a California community that tested paper refuse sasks, their adult fly population was reduced by 90 percent in only three months. There was no breeding ground for fly larvae that is found in and around rigid metal or plastic cans.

APPLICATIONS MAILED IN JAN. If you own one or more of the more than seven million motor vehicles in Texas, there is some important mail coming your way early in Januar'.

It is your registration renewal application.

This is the second year of operation for the new, easy computereized registration procedure devised by the Texas Highway Department.

Last year, the system greatly reduced bothersome waits and long lines which plagued vehicle owners at county tax offices and substations in years past.

Prospects are that the system will work even better this year.

Also, it is not necessary to present last year's registration receipt of the certificate of title. The renewal application you will receive in the : mail is all you will need.

Registration begins February 1 and continues through April 1.

The renewal application will arrive in the mail in a slender envelope marked, "Important — This Is Your License Plate Renewal Application."

The application is a three-part form with instructions printed on it. One important thing to remember is THE CARD SHOULD NOT BE. TO' APART. After the registration period begins February 1, each vehicle owner can take the renewal application and the fee to his county tax office, or he can order his plates by mail.

If the owner wishes to register his vehicle by mail, he should send the entire three-part renewal application, the fee and an additional $1 to the local county tax office as early as January with the understanding that his license plates may not be mailed until February 1.

The additional $1 charge covers cost of handling and postaige.

If owners are to receive their plates by mail before the April 1 deadline, then they must send the renewal form, fee and $1 for each vehicle to be registered to the local county tax offioe

by March 1. This allows 30 days for delivery of the plates before the April 1 registration deadline.

If the owner decides to go to the county tax office or substation, he will

All he needs to take with him is the renewal application and the fee. He will then receive his new plates and part of the form as his receipt.

Another part of the form is retained by the county and the third is sent to the Motor Vehicle Division of the Texas Highway Department in Austin.

However the owner may decide to register his vehicle — by mail or in person — use of the renewal form will be more convenient and timesaving.

The current registration system is the product of much work and planning. The system began to take shape in 1967 with the installation of the first computer equipment by the Motor Vehicle Division of the Highway Department.

What do students do with their sparetirne? Many of them work and it leaves little time for any extra-curricular activity, including demonstrations or protests.

The fact is that each year an increasing number of students are becoming members of the nation's work before, the Institute of Life Insurance reports.

A typical example is the 19-year-old youth selling records across the counter in a department store. He is a college student who works to supplement a small living allowance from his family. The checker on the afternoon shift in your super-market is a high school student who is there to earn extra money for clothes, and maybe, save up for a second-hand car.

The solemn-looking, pretty girl receptionist in your doctor's office mornings is working on her master's degree and hopes to put away enough for her studies for the next two years.

How many youths are there who both work and attend school? Well, the last time the scholar-workers had their noses counted, reports the Institute, was about a year ago. At that time there were some 4.8 million students between the ages of 16 to 21 who were either working or active candidates for employment. The number of students in the labor force ,according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, has more that doubled within the past decade.

As for high school students who work, there are many more who now graduate than ever before. In 1969, for example, nearly three-fourths of all 16-to21year olds out of school and in the labor force had at least a high school

The prime reason behind the accelerated student-worker population has been an ever-growing social pattern toward more schooling in American society. The financial pressure to both work and remain in school longer have become intensified by the spiraling costs of a college education. The Life Insurance Agency Management Association recently reported that annual private college costs in 1970 can go as high as $3,200 for tuition expenses alone.

Who are the students who work?

Well ,they come in both sexes, of course, and from a variety of social backgrounds. It is just as common, these days, to see the student son of a sanitation worker teach swimming at the local Y, as it is to spot the daughter of a Columbia University professor waiting on a table at f‘, summer resort.

An important segment Of the working student population are married college men. No less than 62 per cent of these young people work, some at full-time jobs, as they attend school to help prepare themselves for the future. For many ,a job helps to pay for the kind of start-up expenses all young family householders have. These may be a house mortage, or apartment rental, furniture, appliances, and an investment in family protection, in the form of a life insurance policy. According to the Institute, some 81 per cent of persons in the 18-24 age group own life insurance and many of them attend college.

What kind of jobs do those scholarworkers hold down? While some work at full-time positions, most students take on part-time jobs. These most often are clerical, sales, or services positions Participation in some jobs of recent years has been declining as a result of technological developments.

In the past ten years, for example, there has been a 10 per cent drop in the number of students employed as farm laborers.

Three•Fruit Pie 1 can (8 oz.) low caloriV 1 cup graham cracker Diet Delight sliced crumbs pineapple 1% teaspoons non-fattening 14 cup cornstarch liquid sweetener'', Dash of salt divided 2 eggs, well beaten 2 tablespoons melted butter 1 tablespoon butter or or margarine margarine 1 can (10',%2 oz.) low calorie 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Diet Delight Mandarin oranges 1/3 cup low calorie apple jelly 1 can (8 oz.) low calorie -1 tablespoon water Diet Delight quartered Bartlett pears Combine graham cracker crumbs, 1 teaspoon sweetener and 2 tablespoons melted butter in small bowl. Mix until crumbly. Press into bottom and sides of lightly buttered 9-inch pie plate. Chill well. Drain oranges, pears and pineapple, combining and reserving liquids. In a medium saucepan, combine cornstarch and salt.

Add enough water to reserved liquids to measure 1 14 cups. Stir into cornstarch along with eggs. Over very low heat, cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Cool thoroughly, stir in remaining % teaspoon sweetener and vanilla. Pour into chilled pie shell and chill until filling is firm. Arrange fruits in six sections (two of each fruit) over Mg. In small saucepan combine jelly with water. Cook over low heat until jelly is melted. Spoon evenly over fruits. Makes 6 servings, 205 calories per serving.

Many children with poor vision are wrongly labeled lazy, dull, or even emotionally disturbed by teachers and parents who are unaware that 20-20 on an eye test does not mean perfect vision.

A child may be above average in intelligence and have a 20-20 score, and

yet a seeing problem may be causing him to fall behind in his studies, to be inattentive in class, to be poor in sports, or even to disturb the other students.

The usual eye test, traditional for many school generations in America, measures only one of the many different faeets of good vision — the ability to distinguish letters of the alphabet at a distance of twenty feet.

18 But what if the letters are at reading distance -- fourteen to twenty inches instead of 20 feet? What if they are off to one side of the child's vision field rather than directly in the middle? What if the letters (or any other objects) are not standing still, but are in motion? Do the child's right and left eyes work together smoothly? How well does the child judge depths and distances?

Twenty percent of American youngsters entering school for the first time already have vision difficulties, according to the Better Vision Institute.

Half of these problems can be spotted by parents and teachers before they show up in patterns of poor psychological adjustment or poor scholastic achievement, but too many children now struggling through into the the sixth or seventh grade before their visual needs are recognized, and a large number of American children never get adequate visual diagnosis and treatment.

The screening of Columbia University freshmen over a four-year period revealed that about 30 percent of entering students had some visual problem that might have jeopardized their scholastic success. Some of these students may have been able to see well enough to "get along," but probably at the cost of so much extra mental effort as to cause continual suffering from eyestrain, fatigue, general irritability, and restlessness.

A vision-handicapped youngster rarely complains about not seeing well — because he usually doesn't know that his vision is not normal. He tends to believe that everyone sees the way he does. Parents and teachers can sometimes spot eye-trouble symptoins if they know what to look for. Here are a few of the more obvious physical signs: 1. Crossed eyes 2. Blinking 3. Reddened eyes 4. Dark marks under the eyes 5. Watery ,eyes 6. Periodic blurred vision 7. Nausea or dizziness 8. Headaches 9. Encrusted eyelids 10. Burning or itching eyes 11. Frequent styes Here are some of the signs that require more careful obServation: 1. A tendency for the child to stiffen his body or turn his head forward or backwards when looking, at a distant object.

15. Fatigue, nervousness, irritability, or restlessness following the completion of tasks which involve use of the eyes.

16. Difficulty in remembering what is read.

17. Confusion of similar words.

18. Using the finger to lead the eye while reading.

A complete eye examination, carried out by a highly trained professional, is the only certain way to find out whether a child (or an adult) has an eye difficulty. A high percentage of American children who are in the bottom third of their classes scholastically are suffering from some kind of vision defect. The percentage is small for high scholastic achievers, but many children who are doing quite well would be achieving at even higher levels if their vision were better.

The Better Vision Institute believes that all children should be examined thoroughly for good vision before they enter school. To promote the cause of better vision, especially for the young, the Institute offers free to all women's organizations a kit that tells how to alert people in the community to the importance of good vision. The kit includes an informative speech about good vision and how the eye works, a set of information-packed pamphlets, and a number of specific suggestions about how to conduct a productive better vision program. A child with poor eye-hand coordination may need a prescribed course of eye training exercises. Yet each of these children may have 20-20 vision in the commonly accepted sense of the term. Wise parents can probably influence their children's future in no more forceful manner than by making sure that their eyes are in efficient working order.

—SPJST-EDUCATION PROGRAM A teacher education program for secondary Czech in the Modern Languages Department at Texas A&M has been approved by the State Board of Education.

Approval of the modern languages program, through which a student can acquire the State certificate to teach Czech, was made by Dr. J. W. Edgar, state commissioner of education.

The recommendation for the Czech program was made to the state board by the Texas A&M Council on Teacher Education, co-ordinated by Dr. Earl Jones associate dean of education.

Dr. Jack A. Dabbs, modern languages head, noted that Texas A&M is one of the few institutions in the U.S. with more than one professor qualified to prepare teachers to teach Czech.

Instruction of the state's third most common tongue is handled in the department by Dr. John M. Skrivanek and Joseph J. Skrivanek, twin brothers.

The department enrolls about 30 students per semester in a variety of Czech courses.

Twenty-four credit hours' work are required in Texas for a provisional teaching certificate in a field. A temporary certificate is issued by the state on the basis of 18 credit hours' work.

K vYkladu Erbenova tivota a dila se obracelo mnoho literarne historickYch badatelii. Bohaty material podavaji zejmena d ye zakladni monografie o Erbenovi od Vincence Brandla a od Antonina Grunda. Na ne pak navazuje a v mnohem oveem i doplriuje rozsahle nova dila, jehcii autorem je univ. prof. dr. Julius DalanskY, a jet se v dohledne dobe objevi v melantrieske edici "Odkazy". Neodolal jsem. a vykroeil za nim.

Kdyit se nasytil pohledu na malostranske stfechy a prohledl si nekolik obrazka v prodejnim stanku, zamirii k Narodni galarii ye Sternberskem pa"DobrY den, Mistfe!" pozdravila pani u prodeje vstupenek, pustjla s naprostou samozrejmosti dal, a obratila se ke mne. "Jeden?" rekla a podala mi listek. "Prosim vas, pani, kdo . . ." ukazal jsem na xnute, kterY ut stoupal po schodech do prvniho poschodi. "Mistr ZrzavY," nenechala me pani dokonekt otazku, "— chodi sem &stip."

Zaplatil jsem vstupenku, ale dovnitf jsem neeel. Vratil jsem se na namesti, pfechazel sem a tam a pfemYelel. Tak to je tedy On. Mistr u ktereho to vel`M' na zaeatku slova ma doopravdy opodstatneni. Vim, to Jan ZrzavY je osobity malif, jeho' jedineenost ve vYtvarnem vyjadfovani ut fadu let pHtahovala tolik lidi — z yldete mladYch. Jestlite se da, o nekterem maliri miuvit jako o umelci s vyhranenYm rukopisem, pak jiste bude ZrzavY na pfednim miste. Bylo by toho jeSte mnohem vice, co by se dab povedet o Janu Zrzavem. Ale velml jsem si, to Mistr prase vychazi z galerie, a ja bych si rad udelal par snimkt. A vas, IVIistre ZrzavY, vas bych tady, v ulicich kolem Hradu, rad jeete mnoho let potkaval.

Letos se iteastnilo teto mezinarodni televizni souteZe v Praze pies 200 zahranienich delegatil ze 41 televiznich spolecnosti z celeho sveta. Celkem 55 souteZnich filmu se vystiidalo na obrazovkach, ktere byly v provozu kaZdjr den od deviti rano at' do piilnoeEach hodin.

Jako vzpruhu a novinku letogniho festivalu lze uvest, ze se ye Valdgtejnskean palaci obrazovky poprve rozsvitily barvami a umoZnily tak porovnavat a zvaZovat piednosti barevneho vysilani proti demobilemu.

Pokud jde o celkovou skladbu soutanich programt, ukazuje se eim jasneji, Cze televizni tvorba a jeji specifika bude jegte dlouho piedmetem zkougek a hiedani. zhodnotit celkovjr pr(lbeh a naplii VII. televizniho festivalu v Praze, pak je trebarici, ze byl Aspegnjr.

Zejmena proto, ze jsme videli nekolik opravdu vynikajicich televiznich filz nich naptiklad sovetskY snimek "Byl mesic mar, patii k nezapomenutelnYm zaZitkum. Film Nemecke demokraticke republiky "`Mu2 bez minulosti", se stal pravem piedmetem soustkedeneho zajmu festivalovjrch hostel delegatia, rumunskY snimek "Voda odchazi fide' ziistavaji", otiesne tlumoeil dramaticke proZitky lidi, postilenYch Zivelnou katastrofou, a tak by se dalo ye vjr'etu vynikajicich filmu pokraeovat jegte dal.
