This little city, of West Is very progressive and a pleasure to live in. Since we moved here last January, many progreSsive things have been done. Many streets have been paved, sewers added, etc., The Mayor is Bro. Jos. F. Holasek, and the President of the Chamber of Commerce is Mr. Joe Edd Grimm. There is also a Hospital Board headed by Dr. Billy D. Pierce. He made an announcement last week that thrilled the whole city, and that was that a $845,000. Federal Loan had been approved for the city for the construction of a 40-bed hospital here. The loan is to come from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (ITUD). • • Your editor has been rather under the weather for over a week, but almost up to par now. A total 0.f. 1,638 insurance companies were operating in Texas as of last Aug. 31, an increase of 33 over the preceding year, according to a report issued by the Texas Board. The total consisted of 863 out-of-state companies and 776 Texas companies, with nearly half of the latter being mutual, assessment firms.
The largest single category was stock life, consisting of 315 out-of-state companies and 216 Texas companies for a total of 531. In addition, the legal reserve life business included 73 mutuals, 53 stipulated premium firms in Texas and, 39 fraternals for a grand total of 696. The legal reserve fire and casualty segment totaled 496 companies. It consisted of 336 out-of-state fire and casualty carriers, 73 Texas stock firms, 80 out-of-state mutuals and 7 Texas mutuals. Another large group consisted of the 373 mutual assessment firms in Texas, which included 181 mutual aid, 98 burial associations, 30 farm mutuals and 26 county mutuals. The remainder of the Texas grand total of licensed carriers included 12 Mexican casualty companies, 25 reciprocals, 16 Lloyd's and 19 title firms.
