FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We wish all of our readers a happy, healthy, enjoyable and safe Labor Day weekend. Let us make the National Safety Council not be able to count one of us in their final statistics! Drive carefully, if you have to drive at all.

Labor Day, the first Monday in S ep is a day when Americana-tember, honor labor. On this day, midway between Independence Day and Thankgiving, people throughout the country join in saluting the millions of men and women who arc employed and whose manual lock and skills produce the goods and services required by society.

Practically all American adults are, in the broadest sense, workers. But labor, as we honor it each September, involves the concept of being employed and the idea of manual exertion, plus whatever skills are combined with it. Workers, in this narrower sense, are those to whom Labor Day is dedicated, especially as they are united in efforts to secure better working and living conditions. They represent an indispensable part of American society. Because many of them have recently been called "the forgotten Americans," Labor Day this year can have a special significance.

American labor has come a long way since Labor Day was first celebrated in 1882. At that time, unions were few and weak; and workers when

After theCivil War, an attempt was made to establish , one big union for ah types of workers, the Knights of Labor included factory and workers as well as skilled craftsmen. Only laWyers, bankers, stockbrokers and gamblers . were excluded. At one time it claimed 700,000 members, but its diverse groups could not function efr fectively and the organization virtually disappeared by the end of the nineteenth century.

In 1886, skilled workers Who 106 that their needs were not being met by the Knights of Labor formed the American Federation of Labor (AFL), an organization of craft union which gave only limited power to the national body. Headed by an immigrant, Samuel Gompers, the AFL stressed the economic weapon of the strike rather than political action.

No serious effort was made to organize the country's unskilled workers until the 1930s. Then,' a' groin.) of organizers led by' John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, set up the Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) to mobilize workers in America's mass production . industries. This new group utilized the weapon of the sit-doWn strike so that non-union workers could not be. brought in to run struck plants. ' The Committee became the Congress of Industrial. Organization in 1933; but merged with the AFL. in 1955. Today, the AFL-CIO dominates the American labor movement. However, there are important groups, including. the miners, the teamsters and. the automobile workers, who are outside the organization. There are many local unions, however, which have no na tional affiliation and also millions of workers who are not yet unionized. The Labor Day idea spread rapidly.

It was endorsed by the newly formed AFL in 1886. Oregon made it a legal holiday in 1887. In 1894, Congress made it a holiday in the District of Columbia and in all U.S. territories. By 1923, all the states had recognized it.

The demands of the organizers of the first Labor Day celebration have long since been realized. The rights of workers to organize, to select their own bargaining agent, to negotiate on a basis of equality with their employers, to strike if necessary, guaranteed today. Reforms for which labor has fought including shorter hours, better working conditions, improved free public education, the graduated income tax, minimum wage laws, unemployment insurance, paid vacations, pensions for retired and disabled workers have been a permanent part of the structure of American society.

With all the gains, however, there are still enormous tasks for the labor movement including the integration of minority groups into local unions; the mobilization of millions of unorganized workers and preparation of the labor force for technological advances and increased automation.

Today organized labor continues to play an important role not only in behalf of its own members but in furthering the welfare of the entire community.

Six years later, almost to the day — on September 2, 1945 -- the Japanese (who had signed a three-power pact with Germany and Italy in 1941) surrendered formally to the Allies aboard the United Atates battleship ivlisouri in Tokyo Bay, four months after the fighting in Europe

A third World War, should it ever come, would, with the use of nuclear weapons, be infinitely more destructive, and probably the last on this planet Earth. Has mankind gained enough intellect to have learned to live together without destroying himself? Let us hope that the first step on the moon with ten Words spoken: "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind," has really brought us a new era of hope different from any since time began.

Florida. A seven o'clock evening service took place on July 26, at the Church of the Resurrection in Miami.

The bride, given in marriage by 1)er father, wore a white silk beaded gown.

A seeded pearl tierra held a full long veil. The bride's attendants wore chinese blue crepe and carried blue and white carnations. Matron of honor was Mrs. Barbara Leahr of Miami.

Dear Members, On Sunday, Sept. 7, our SPJST meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Each member is urged to attend because it will be a special day. Every six months new members of Lodge 6 are initiated into the lodge and it will fall on Sept.

A large number of our members enjoyed an outing at Spivey's Crossing on the Brazos Saturday, Aug. 16. There was swimming, domino playing, relaxing under the shade trees and plenty of good food for everyone. The occasion was for the workers at the recently-held annual Cottonwood picnic.

The lodge would like to wish Bro. Joe Johnny Halamik of Tours a speedy recovery. He entered Providence Hospital in Waco on Sunday, Aug. 17.

This has been discussed for several years, pro and con. We feel the time is ripe for such a merger.

According to the provisions of Art. 131 of our SPJST By-LaWs, this is official notification that a meeting will be held to consider and vote on this proposed merger. The meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 8th, at 7:30 p.m., in the William Temple Foundation Hall 427 Market, Galveston.

Our lodge's regular meeting falls on the day before, Sunday, Sept. 7th, but Lodge 62 is meeting on Monday and they will also consider this merger proposal in their meeting. In addition, Bro. Nick A. Morris, president of the Supreme Lodge in Temple, will be in our area that weekend and we would like for him to be on hand to answer any questions that the members may have. Consequently, we feel that both lodges meeting at the same tune, but separately, would be the best way to handle the matter.

All members over 16 will also be notified by mail about this meeting.

LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Members, The monthly meeting of Lodge 35, Elk, was called to order by President Henry Breitkreutz on August 10.

Youth club members, John Pechacek, and Pat Kimball led the Pledge of Allegiance.

In last month's report I made a mistake on one of the names of the flag bearers. The name was supposed to be Vernon Wood III. I'm sure sorry about that Vernon.

President Breitkreutz recognized our visitors, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Middleton.

Bro. Albert Banik, secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting. Bro. John Mach gave the treasurer's report.

Sister Rosemarie youth leader, reported on the activities of the youth club. She said that we had one youth going for state rumors at Taylor. She is Cynthia iriib. Sister Banik told all the chilci;m about the surprise she had for ;hem. She told own and his them than Mr father came by and wanted to Lake

VESTNAK all of the youth club members on a hay ride. Sister Banik had a very pretty birthday cake brought to the front and then she asked everyone who had a birthday in August to come forward and we sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

The Committee Chairmen all gave very good reports as they always do.

We are very proud of these people.

We had some new members who were accepted into membership and there were some who received paid-up policies.

There wasn't any old business and under new business the matter was brought up about getting a telephone in the hall. It was decided that we need one and Bro. Kimball said that he would check into the possibilities of getting one.

There was also some discussion on the rent of the hall. Some seem to think that the people who work there all the time and keep the thing going should not have to pay as much as others who rent the hall. Bro. Breitkruetz appointed a committee to check into this matter.

The Sick Committee reported that we had two members in the hospital but they were home now. They were Sister Rosie Vicha and Bro. Billy Jack Haney. As a matter of fact, they were both at the meeting so is looks as if they are doing fine.

Congratulations go to Shirley Thou who was the winner of our door prize this month.

Congratulations also go to two of our members who got married this past month, Betty Pavelka, daughter of Bro. and Sister Charlie Pavelka, got married in July. Betty married Lynn Brown of Mart. Also getting married was Jerry Vicha, son of Bro. and Sister Rudolf Vicha. Jerry married Leslie Stovall of Waco. They were married on Aug. 9. We would like to wish all of you the very best of everything in the future.

I suppose that is all that I have to report except to remind all of you about the premium refund checks that are still coming, so please try to he present at the meeting to pick your's up and make Bro. Zalman's job a little easier. Our next meeting will be on Sept. 14, hope to see you there.

In Taylor last Sunday, our youth, David, Darrell and Frank Vrla, won state in group talent. Debbie Becan is the winner in craft, and our Beseda dancers are state champs 7-- Mark Prachyl, David Vrla, David Becan, Donald Petr, Vickie Petr, Cindy Malidak, Sharon Henzen and Sherri Petr.

It was a happy day for Lodge 84.

Congratulations to the baseball team for winning both leagues, and two more trophies. We will miss Bro. Ben Jarma's informative letters until next spring. I wonder what those fellows do after the season ends? All that extra time The sunshine committee sent getwell cards to Pls. Deane Baleja. Mary, 'rban, and Bro. Charlie Adamcik, David Pool, and Raymond Dlabaj.

A moment of silence was observed for co. Joe hover. Cur sympathy is to his family and also to 'Prachyl and Sister Wilma Vrla who recently lost their father.

Fraternally, Hose Scott FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AND PROSPECTIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS Early September is the time of year when most colleges and universities throughout the land will begin their school year. Although another semester will start next February, the fall semester usually offers the best selection of freshman courses and is the best time to enroll. No doubt, many readers of this article already have completed college' testing programs and have definite plans for attending some college or university. For these persons much of the information provided here may be a repetition of something they have heard before.

However, for those Of you who have not yet decided or made plans to attend college's the information contained herein may be of some help.

Although most of this article applies to all prospective college students, the latter part is written in particular for those persons of Czech descent.

Although graduation was the end of yonr high school career, it was also as the alternate name implies a commencement — the beginning of another career which. will most likely prove to be much longer and much more important than the previous one.

I am sure that you are aware of this and have eithgr already embarked upon this new career or are serious ly considering what your future plans and .activities concerning it should be.

It may appear attractive to take some of the full-time and therefore comparatively well-paying (by previous part-time standards) jobs which are now open to you. It may be a temptation to earn money and be somewhat "on your own." Possibly if you are

VtSTNfit greatly interested in some occupation and are firmly convinced that you want to make it your life work, it may be best for you to enter that occupation now as an apprentice or through an on-the-job or other special training course.

If you are not sure of what is the best thing for you to do, then I suggest that you discuss the ma tter further with your high school advisor or counselor, teachers, and parents. They know your aptitudes, abilities, and interests and are best qualified to advise you concerning the appropriateness of immediate employment, special vocational or technical training, or a higher education for you. The deans and counselors at most junior and senior colleges will also be happy to advise you regardless of whether or not you plan to attend their institutions. Of course, most of these persons will only counsel with you and you will have to make your own final decision.

If you are undecided as to exactly what occupation or profession you wish to follow but are interested in obtaining a higher education, then I suggest that you plan to attend a college or university this fall. Although most college entrance and performance standards are high and demanding of the student, you need not be an honor graduate to feel qualified to attend college. Almost everyone benefits in many ways from having attended college.

Although it is best to know what general field of study you will want to pursue, the first two years of many college degree programs are similar, and you can definitely decide what you will major in after you have had an opportunity to learn more about the various fields of endeavor. The interest and aptitude tests and counselling you receive in most colleges will help you greatly in making your final decision.

In addition to giving you time to decide, going to college will be a continuation of your education which is very important for your future. So many persons have obtained college degrees in recent years that the bachelor's degree from a college is now about equal in significance to that of a high school diploma twenty or thirty years ago. To compete successfully with the next person in most Professions and in many occupations in the future, you will, need to have a college degree.

If you wish to attend college but believe that the financial situation of

7 your family will not permil it, please investigate this matter more There are now many government and private programs for helping capable but financially needy college students.

In addition to the part-lime work, scholarships, and loan funds which are available to college students, there are some special scholarship:3 and loan funds available to you if y ou are of Czech descent. Although ,;cholarships are the best when obtainable, loans are the next best because they are made at a low rate of interest and repayment usually does not have to start until after you have been graduated and have started coining.

If you are a male high school graduate and are concerned about the Unstable world situation and the probability of your being drafted or called into active military service. do not let that interfere with your long-range plans for the future. Almost every generation has been faced with a similar problem, and it usually has not materialized as the tremendous obstacle which it may have seemed to be.

Merely waiting for possible induction will accomplish little, whereas attending college may help you a great deal in several ways.

Because our country has a great need for college graduates, the Selective Service Boards are liberal in granting deferments to draft-age college students. Also at many colleges you may join one of the many ROTC programs which may permit you to complete your college training and earn an officer's commission before you a re called to active duty. Even if you should be inducted while in college, having something started and accomplished and having something to look forward to. upon your discharge will make your time in the service seem shorter and more enjoyable. The training you receive in college before induction will of course, better qualify you for the more desirable positions in the military services.

To help you in choosing a college or university and course of study, visit or write to "The Registrar" of the various schools in which you may be interested for free information bulletins for freshmen; study these bulletins, and then consult with your parents and high school teacher before deciding which school to attend. in general, fully state supported senior colleges and public (those which receive state assistance funds) junior colleges have the lowest tuition fees. Because there are a great many junior colleges, you

8 may have one located relatively near to your home, permitting you to commute and avoid the considerable room and board expense of living away from home. Junior colleges generally have smaller classes with more individual assistance and offer greater opportunities for porticipation in student activities and leadership development.

Senior colleges offer a greater variety of courses and certain activity programs which are not available at smaller schools.

Because most schools start their fall semester, in early September, you should select your school soon and hasten to take all necessary action (as outlined in the information bulletin) required for admission and registration. TO expedite matters you may need to visit your chosen school to talk to the registrar and to make housing, part-time work, and other arrangements.

If you are of Czech descent and select a school which teaches courses in the Czech language and/or has a Czech Club, I strongly urge you to join the Czech Club and plan to study some Czech either as a major course of study, to fulfill foreign language requirements in other courses of study, or to obtain a better working knowledge of the language for you own benefit. If your college does not offer courses in the Czech language, inquire about the possibility of it being taught if there were sufficient interest in and demand for it. Then discuss the matter with fellow students who might be interested in taking a Czech course.

There are several reasons for and benefits for your study of Czech.

1. The beginning course in Czech will be relatively easy for you if you are only slightly familiar with the language. Word pronounciations are the hardest hurdle for anyone starting to learn Czech; but most persons of Czech descent seem to have a natural ability to twist their tongues as required for the proper pronounciations. Courses in Czech will count as foreign language electives credit toward most degrees at most schools. Why not utilize and add to your existing knowledge and natural ability in Czech instead of starting some other foreign language with which you are totally unfamiliar and which may prove of very little, if any, use to you?

2. A better knowledge of the Czech language will be of help to you in learning other foreign languages which you may debide to study later. The more foreign languages you know, the

Vas T N.. f easier it is to learn additional ones.

Knowledge of one or more foreign languages will better qualify you for many additional job opportunities — no matter what may be your major course of study. The Czech language is often referred to as the"key to learning the Russian language" which is at present very important in various governmental, scientific, industrial, commercial, educational, and literary activities. There is an ever increasing need in the U. S. diplomatic and military services for persons who can deal with the Russians in their own language.

3. Taking a course in Czech may better qualify you for certain scholarships and/or student loans provided by Czech fraternal or other organizations.

Although registration for Czech courses may not necessarily be a prerequisite for obtaining these scholarships and loans, such action will certainly be in your favor.

4. A better knowledge of the Czech language may be of considerable practical value to you after graduation if you engage in any professional or business enterprise which competes for the patronage of the many persons who do and will continue to prefer use of the Czech language. Also, there are many fraternal, religious, and mutual organizations in Texas which will continue to require officers who are proficient in both the Czech and English languages. Even if you are unable to -take a regular college credit course in the Czech language, try to organize and enroll in a terminal-type conversational Czech course which will be helpful for the reasons mentioned in this paragraph. A terminal-type course is most easily organized because it does not have to meet regular accreditation standards, usually meets at night, and may be attended by persons other than full-time college students.

5. A better knowledge of the Czech language and/or membership in a Czech Club will better prepare you for more successful living by a more complete acceptance ajead assimilation into the American society and way of life. Most likely your name (even if you change it) will always be known or recognized by some as being of Czech origin. This will be to your credit because practically everyone is aware of and respects the economic, patriotic, and cultural contributions which the CZechs have made to help make this country great. MoSt people realize that this country is great because we are a composite group which includes

Wednesday, August 27, 1969 the strands of many peoples and many cultures, and that one can be (and indeed is more likely to be) a true, loyal, and more appreciative American if he does not forsake the language and Culture of his ancestors. If you can answer the occasional friendly questions about the language and culture of your ancestors, others will respect rather than criticize you for it. As you grow older, you, yourself, will feel an ever increasing psychological and consequently practical need for knowledge about your ancestral ties and cultural heritage and background.

Avail yourself of any present opportunities to gain this knowledge for your own future benefit.

I hope you will continue your education at a college or university of your own choice. If the Czech ExStudents Association of Texas can assist you in any way, please call on us.

Dear Members and Friends, I would like to say a big "Thank You" to the wonderful chaperones we had with us at camp this year, Sisters Helen Bryson and Gloria Janke of Lodge No. 81 Needville, Bro. and Sis. Louis Schenburn, Bro. and Sis. King Hegwood, Bro. Neil Adamcik, Sisters Marcell Malak, Annie Richardson and Mena Murray of Lodge 88, Bro. and Sister Charles Havran, Bro. and Sis. Hello Readers, Congratulations to our District III Youth Director, Wilma Nesuda, for winning the State Youth Director of the Year. I also want to say congratulations to all the state winners. Truthfully, I know it takes effort and a tremendous amount of work.

Many thanks to the Taylor Lodge for being host to such a large group of people. We appreciated your hospitality and wonderful effort to cater to us all throughout our visit.

I am addressing this to the youth in our club. Approach me at our next meeting with the phrase: "Farewell to Summer Vacation." This is a test for me to find out truthfully how many youth are interested in the Vestnik. It is surprising how interesting I find all the letters from various clubs. Believe me it pays you to read when you meet all these friendly members at gatherings such as state YAD. See you at our next meeting. If all goes well, there will be a surprise.

It may not be official, but the month of August seems to be designated as SPJST District II socializing and fraternalizing month. We have been together every weekend. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Lodge 29, Taylor, the State YAD climaxed all the activities. It was enjoyable greeting old friends and meeting new ones. As Mrs. Patsy Slovak said, "It's nice meeting the youth leaders whose letters we read in the Vestnik." Incidentally, I enjoyed working with Patsy in registering crafts.

Deat Readers, Our District and State YADs are such big, important days to our interested youth that I think it would be a lot of help to those members who are lax. We are proud of you and your accomplishments, and we are proud for all those many efforts that were put forth to make the day a success.

Dear Readers: Our next youth and adult meeting will be Sunday, September 7, at 2 p.m.

Please try to attend. After the meeting, we will have giblet gravy and chicken noodle soup furnished by the lodge and all members of Lodge 47 are invited. YOU may bring a loaf of your favorite bread or some pickles. At the adult meeting, the members will also vote on a storage room addition and the black topping of the front yard, so plan to be with us on Sunday, September 7.

In our youth club, we are sponsoring a propect called "Hurricane Camille." As you know, the Red Cross asking for food, clothing and money for the hurricane distress area, which will be in desperate need of these items, so as a charity project, Lodge 47 Youth Club is accepting food and clothing to be sent to the Mississippi area. I would urge every youth member to bring at least one item, either canned food or clothing, to our next meeting on September 7, and we will see that it ,gets on its way to Mississippi.

The adults may participate in this project, too. It is a good cause to help a neighboring state that is in such need of help.

School, football and other school activities will take over and slow down our lodge activities, but be sure to attend your monthly meeting and your monthly socials. Thank you parents, youth, and a SPECIAL THANKS to my assistants, for participating in all the summer activities.

We were the first club to nave the flag raising arrenion Y, immediately after r ved on Thursday morning, so they aimed the lunar module and it landed at Camp Val Verde at the flag pole. Two youngAers from Lodge 47 crawled out, one by one, and planted flag reading "District II and District 1V have landed at Camp Val Verde," "Astronaut" Gary Pavlica 1. I Apollo and tliey were dressed as spacemen No. 47 lunar module at Camp Vat and picked a few rocks and they got Verde. "Astronaut" Frank i e Novosad. the United States flag out of the module and then they raised the flag and Jr., is still inside. we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

This went over real good and we are prowl to have members such as these two couples, besides making this module for us, (hey made a special trip to haul it there and came again to pick it up.

LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE

Dear Readers, I hope that everyone has had a nice summer, for soon it will be school time again. The youth of SPJST have had a wonderful time at summer camp.

On August 7-9, the youth District and District IV, attended summer camp at Val Verde. The hot summer heat did not melt the youngsters' enthusiasm one bit. The activities ineluded horseback riding, swimming, archery and nature study. I want to thank all who were responsible fbr planning camp.

It was my pleasure to work with craft at camp. The youth worked with liquid embroidery, painting by numbers. Thank you, Brother Janousek for introducing this amazing product to On August 17, the State Talent and Craft contests were held at Lodge 29, Taylor. The afternoon was very enj oyable; thank you, members of Taylor Lodge 29 for hosting this event.

Congratulations to all winners in tolent and craft. The royalty contest will be held September 14 at Lodge 47, Seaton. Don't forget this important event.

On August 14, our youth club held its monthly meeting. We, along with the mother lodge, are planning a picnic in the near future. All members are urged to come to the next meeting which will be held the second Thursday in September. We need a large attendance to complete our plans for October. See you all at the meeting.

Dear Members, Most of the lodges in the various districts went camping at Val Verde, and Lodge 48 was no exception. The following attended: Wanda and Betty Wiesner, Diana, Larry, Darrell,

Chaperones were: Mr. and Mrs. Howd Leshikar, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Greenlees, and Mrs. B. C. Stalmach.

I would especially like to thank the Leshikars and Greelees for their fine help. A big thank you to all who Made it possible for us to go to camp.

We got back from camp on Saturday and the next day we had our regular monthly meeting. Surprisingly, all the campers made it to the meeting.

I'd like to mention more name 3, but I'm sure I would leave out someone since there were so many people who helped us to reach the honot of becoming Youth Club of the Year.

On .Aug. 10 1 went to Camp Val Ve. with. District III. Every clay we had craft and then we went swimming.

We also went hiking and horseback riding.. Camp was a -lot of fun this year.

rived we ate a very good dinner, and then the name tags were handed out to each person.

While we were at camp our activities were horsemanship, swimming, archery, nature study, crafts, camping crafts, quiet games, outdoor games, boys assembly and girls assembly.

Every morning we got up at 6 and ate breakfast and went to our activity. In the afternoon it was no cooler than 112 degrees. Every night we had a cookout and a program. Everyone enjoyed camp very much even though it was very hot.

Fraternally, Patricia Karen Stanislav Age 10 —SPJSTLODGE NO. 47, SEATON Dear Youth, On August 17, the State Youth Achievement Day was held at Lodge 29 Taylor. Over 500 people attended the activities. The afternoon was most enjoyable and the special intertainment was just great! I would like to congratulate all of the winners at state. I, myself, think that it is a great honor to be one of the state winners. All of the winners should be proud to be a state winner!

We must not forget about the State Royalty which will be held at Seaton Star Hall, eight miles from Temple.

I hope to see a lot of you there, especially you who are members of District II. Our youth club will have its next meeting on Sept. 7. See all of you then. And the rest of you, I will see on Sept. 14.

Fraternal ly, Paula Jeter (16) Reporter —SPJSTLOGE4 NO. 17, NEW TABOR r Members, This is my first letter to the Vestnil:. I really do not know how to start.

On August 3, District I's YAD was held at Lodge No. 17, New Tabor. The talent and craft entries were enjoyed by all who attended, which was a very good turnout. Each lodge was well represented by all who participated in the individual and group talent. There were many first-place winners from mu- lodge. The Royalty Contest was next. There were three queen candidates from New Tabor, Dime Box, and Snook. There was only one king candidate, who is from New Tabor. He is Alvin Varva.

It gives me great pleasure to represent District I as their queen candidate for state competition. It is a very

Wednesday, August 27, 1969 rewarding experience to receive such an honor because you compete not only with girls at district level, but also at a higher level -- state, which is a tougher experience for girls. I would also like to thank all of the members of the mother lodge, Lodge 17, New Tabor, for all of their support and encouragement. I would like to especially thank my youth leader, my parents, my godmother, and everybody else who assisted. I want to thank them for their time and patience for preparing me for District I YAD. On August 17, State YAD craft and talent was held at Lodge No. 29, Taylor. Even though District I did not receive any rewards at state, yet, we were good loosers. Next year, we will try harder, which will take more time, more patience, and more encouragement for every youth to do his part.

On August 23, New Tabor is spon soring a back-to-school dance from 8 to 12 p.m. I hope to see all of the lodges in District I there. Our next meeting is Sept. 7, due to State Royalty on Sept. 14, which is our regular meeting date.

I hope to see everybody at state on Sept. 14, at Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Fraternally, Susan Zavodny (18) ---SPJSTLODGE NO 66, WACO Dear Readers, Well, another State YAD has come and gone. Every district was represented in crafts, talent and the point contest. It seems that the SPJST is getting more and more youth every year, and these youth are trying to win something at the YAD by participating in activities. Our DYD, Wilma Nesuda, won the title of "DYD of the Year." I feel that Mrs. Nesuda deserved the title and every youth in District III should feel lucky for having such a great director. District III was represented a great deal. Beseda, junior and senior group talent and quite a few craft winners were from District III. Junior and teenager of the year winners should be congratulated because they are the ones who work so very hard to win that great title.

Junior of the year was won by a very hard-working girl from Lodge 153, La Salle. Teenager of the year was won by a girl from Seaton Lodge 47, who has worked bard all year long.

I must thank Lodge 29, Taylor members for hosting the very successful State YAD. I had a great time.

Dear Members, I want to say thank you to all the ones who made it possible for us to; go to camp. Then the ,great time and experience at Camp Val Verde. Come on boys and girls, join the youth club and see what you, are missing. Our youth leaders are wonderful and very helpful.

Our State YAD was a big success.

We had a big turnout; the arts and crafts and talent were great. The youth club assisted in cleaning , tables and helping with chores. We all had a wonderful time and enjoyed having all the folks over and all our youth clubs, and our great youth leaders. Thanks to Mr. Janousek for such a great leader, and Mr. Morris for coming down to join us. Boys and girls, our next meeting will be the second Sunday in September, beginning at 2 p.m.

Some of our members could not attend due to a death in the family. We extend our sympathy to the Matoska family at the death of their grandfather, Mr. John Matoska.

Bonnie Cox, who was state queen last year, will be giving up her title to the new queen. Bonnie, you did a fine job and you made a beautiful queen. LODGE NO. 153, LA SAUL Dear Readers, On the fifth of August, our youth club got together for our monthly meeting. However, because of the amendment election, we were unable to meet at our regularly scheduled place, the recreation hall. Therefore, we were taken to Bennett Park, on Horseshoe Bend. Sixteen members were present.

As we all crowded around one small picnic table, our meeting began promptly at two o'clock.

At this meeting the Sunshine Committee was named, it consists of five members living in enough different areas to always keep us up-to-date when anybody is ill. This committee will also be the Telephone Committee — named that because they are to let each of the members know by telephone, when there will be a meeting.

The committee members are: Marilyn Vincik, Diane Dyson, Debbie Ledkins, Carol Williams, and ',Sally Sumbera.

We also discussed a fun clay in which to have our district winners. It will be a waterfilled one at Rockport.

We also plan to invite some newlymade friends from Robstown. Hope to have a good turnout, for possibly our last beach trip before school starts.

a very big hail. Downstairs is where we ate dinner and bought drinks. And upstairs is where the talent contest was held. I enjoyed the talent very much.

It was very interesting. The crafts gave me better ideas for the District YAD. I hope everyone comes to the dedication of the new SPJST Rest Home wing and also the 70th anniversary of the lodge in Taylor. It will be held on October 12.

Fraternally, Albin Horak, Jr., --SPJSTLODGE NO. 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, On August 10 we went to camp. We had a good time. We had to make up a little song. Every night we ate at the camping grounds. Monday we had a circus party. Tuesday we had a Western party. Wednesday we had a treasure hunt. After that we went home.

Sunday I went to state YAD. My sister and I had to sing two times because we had a tie. After that we won a beautiful trophy.

Each night we were assigned to a skit and then had it performed. It was really hot out there. After District III Camp, State YAD was next. YAD was very exciting for my sister and I won first place in junior group Nikita. We won a large trophy.

The reason is I have been doing a good 'number of things with our teenagers, and writing just kind of slips your nand.

Now I'll start back. First we began learning the Moravian. Beseda, then on June 29th we had our District YAD at Lodge 66, Waco.

• Then July rolled around and it was time for• our annual princess ball which was held on July 19. Carolyn Frnka is•our new queen and our new 'king is Monte Olson.

On the 20th of July we had our monthly meeting. We mainly discussed our plans for the dude ranch trip, which was going to be the following Tuesday, July 22 through 24. We went to the Lazy Hills Ranch at Ingram, Texas. Everyone will certainly agree that they had loads of fun.

When we came back it was almost August. For August, we had planned to go to Sandy Lake for a picnic and swimming afterwards.

Then on Sunday, August 10 it was District III's turn to go to camp. We returned to Camp Val Verde where everyone has so much fun last year and this year we again had a lot of fun.

What did you parents think of the beautiful pictures your children did at camp? Everyone will agree that they will look very nice on that empty wail.

Well, then it was home from Camp Val Verde and wait for Sunday, August 17, for State Youth Achievement Day in Taylor, Texas.

I would like to say congratulations to all winners on local, district, and state level.

On the day after State YAD came our monthly meeting. We discussed our

Wednesday, August 27. 1969 activity for the month. We finally decided on a trip to Six Flags on Sunday, Sept. 7. We will meet at the hall at 12:15 p.m. and will leave at 12:30 p.m. When we meet we will then decide what time we will return home.

Our district just returned from Camp Val Verde last Wednesday, July 13. Everyone enjoyed swimming, horseback riding and crafts. Then on Monday night, August 18, we had our meeting and played games.

Wednesday, AnguSt 27, 1969 and they were good sports, too. Charlotte, my sister, sang in individual talent, ages 6-9. She was very good, but she too became a good loser. To me it seemed my grandmother took it worse than Charlotte.

District Three took quite a few awards at State YAD'. Some in craft were won by District Three and also junior and senior group talent. We, from District Three had a big crowd at Taylor. Mrs. Wilma Nesuda, our District Youth Director, won one of the highest honors at State YAD:.

MISSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution nittee of Ledge Cec.ho Moravan 106, La Grange, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge sister, ALBIN L. HRUSIc.A, wife of the late W. C. Hruska, past president of our lodge, who passed away Sunday, May 3rd, at 9:30 p.m. at the Fayette Memorial Hospital lAthere she had been confined since she was injured in an auto accident on U.S. Hwy. 77 south, about three months ago, Mrs. Hruska was 82.

Funeral services were held at the Koenig Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clarence Oestreich officiating; burial was in La Grange City Cemetery beside her husband.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Condra Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Frank Simcik officiated with burial in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Items of Interest ANDREW CARNEGIE One of the many immigrants who found America a land of opportunity to an exceptional degree came here with his parents as a lad of 13. He did much to develop the iron and steel industry in the United States, amassed a fortune and then spent the remainder of his life distributing his wealth in ways that would benefit his own and future generations.

Andrew Carnegie was born in Dimfermline, Scotland on Nov. 25, 1835.

During his early years, his father, a master weaver, saw his livelihood imperilled by the introduction of the power loom arid the factory system.

Andrew's parents emigrated to the U.S. with their two sons in 1848, settling in

Allegheny City (now a part, of Pittsburgh).

Young Andrew worked in a factory for $1.20 a week. Two years later he became a messenger in a Pittsburgh telegraph office. There he earned $2.50 a week. He became familiar with the telegraph and was shortly made telegraph operator at a salary of $25 a mouth. During this time, he spent a great deal of time reading. Ile was able to obtain a book a week through the generosity of Col. James Anderson who opened his private library to working boys. Carnegie's reading increased his interest in national and world affairs. This led him to make copies of foreign news reports coming over the telegraph wires. Distributing these reports to local newspapers, he was able to earn an additional dollar a week. In 1853, still only 18, Carnegie became a railroad telegrapher and clerk to Thomas A. Scott, a divisional superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

In 1855, after the death of his father, Andrew Carnegie made his first investment. When Mr. Scott informed him of a promising opportunity for anyone with $500, young Carnegie mortgaged the family home to obtain the money. It proved a successful investment. About this time, he also came in contact with the inventor of the railroad sleeping car and was so impressed that he invested several hundred dollars in the enterprise.

Within a few, he was receiving several thousand dollars a year from this investment alone.

After the Civil War, Andrew Carnegie abandoned his other interests to concentrate on iron. He organized or bought into many companies. Then he moved to New York where he acted as salesman for the iron companies and as a broker for railroad and iron interests. He was so successful that by 1867 (he was only 32 years old) his income was $50,000 a year.

Becoming acquainted with the Bessemer process for making inexpensive steel, Carnegie quickly saw the possibilities for steel making in the U.S. In post Civil War America steel was a scarce and expensive commodity. Carnegie realized that the process together with the availability of large quantities of coal, iron and other essentials, as well as an abundant labar supply, would enable this country to produce tremendous quantities of cheap steel.

Within twenty years after the introduction of the Bessemer process, the

Carnegie, an excellent organizer and administrator, dominated the steel industry.

In 1901, when he had turned 65, he sold Ins companies for almost half a billion dollars to J. P. Morgan who went on to organize the U. S. Steel Corporation, 'Plie rest of Carnegie's life was dedicated to giving his tortune away. He contributed some $60 million to build 2,509 public libraries, He created the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C., to encourage basic research in science and to advance the growth of knowledge for the benefit of mankind. In Pillbsburghs where he made his fortune, he set up the Carnegie Institute, including a library, museum and art gallery, and also the Institute of Technology. He endowed many colleges with chairs bearing the names of men whom he had known and liked and wished to honor. He contributed to many churches and created funds in the U.S. and 10 European countries to make awards for heroism in the peaceful walks of life.

Since his death in 1919, just fifty years ago, Andrew Carnegie is remembered chiefly for his many benefactions -- gifts which are still benefiting mankind. He should also be remembered as the man who developed the steel industry in America and helped to make possible the emergence of the United States as an industrial power, vssPJST—L TOMORRON---NUCLEAR OASIS; THE AGRO/INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX President Franklin D. Roosevelt was fascinated, during World War II, with the little chemical water desalting packs which were carried on all Air Force planes. When a plane was downed over the ocean and the crew forced to take a life raft, they used the pack to purify a few quarts of salt sea water.

"Imagine," he said, "what could be done if we could desalt salt water on an infinitely large scale." He pointed out that the desert areas of the world, the Sahara, parts of the Middle East, West Australia, our own Mohave, needed only the addition of fresh water to make them bloom.

Twenty-five years Ilater scientists and engineers are putting plans on paper to make his dream come true.

They are planning large nuclear powered "agro-industrial complexes" which would desalt billions of gallons of sea water and irrigate hundreds of

thousands'of acres of desert land. But the fruition of the dream -- expected before the year 2000 — is even more complex than Roosevelt imagined. The millions of kilowatts of power supplied by huge nuclear reactors not only will desalt water. They will also furnish the energy needed for producing the chemical fertilizers for the farm lands, for extracting valuable chemicals from the brine by-product, and for products manufacturing industrial which need a high input of power.

Preliminary plannings of a hypothetical agro-industrial complex have already been undertaken at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There, scientists under the laboratory's director, Dr. Alvin Weinberg, have prepared a report on how to mesh the various components of such a complex — nuclear power, desalting, agriculture and industry into a workable, economically viable whole.

Their complex would have two large nuclear reactors which could produce two million killowats of electricity and one billion gallons of fresh water every day.

The water would irrigate a 300,000 acre "food factory." The nuclear power would serve industrial plants to produce aluminum sheet and bar stock, electric furnace phosphorus and ammonia from electrolytic hydrogen for fertilizer. The complex would also include a solar salt works, a railroad marshalling yard and an artificial harbor with docks for import of raw materials and export of food and industrial products.

It will take 100,000 people to keep this complex going. Most of them will live in a modern, planned community. The residents will enjoy all the benefits of inexpenSive electric power, including freedom from air pollution. Transportation to and from work will be powered by electricity, eliminating the Pollutants associated with the internal combustion engine.

To make the complex work, the Oak Ridge study shows, all these factors have to be carefully balanced. It will be particularly important to plan for the most efficient use of the one billion gallons of water to be produced, without fail, almost every day of the year. To this end, crops must be planned which will make use of the land and the water almost all the year around.

One crop which makes the most efficient use of its water is wheat. But the cost of the water used to irrigate a

*s wheat crop can be brought down if a second major crop ---- -like sorghum, corn, dry beans or millet — could be vroWn in the same year on the same land. In some areas, such as India, even three crops a year could be grown, thus making for even More efficient use of the irrigation water.

The Oak Ridge planners hope that agricultural research will lead to food crops which will make even more efficient use of water. They say: "What is here being contemplated is that the high cost of water may be at least partly offset by intensive scientifically managed farming in an area where year-round production is poSsible under such highly controlled conditions that the enterprise might be called a `food factory'."

After seeing the -report, Nobel prize winner Glenn Seaborg, who is chairman of the AEC, pointed to some of the long-range benefits of the "agro" part of such agro-industrial complexes. Predicting that one such complex could produce more than one bil-lion pounds , of specially developed, high-yield grain annually, he said, "It is estimated that a billion pounds of this grain could supply about 2.5 million people a basic diet of •.2,400 calories a clay. The total effect of all this would mean that we would be using modern science and technology to put to use currently unproductive. land and seawater to feed tens of millions — and eventually hundreds of millions — of people who might otherwise starve or live on the fringe of starvation. In addition, such centers 'would bring population to currently uninhabitable areas, establish a community and port there, and perhaps lay the groundwork for other industrial activities making use of the area's natural resources and the nuclear power available."

The Oak Ridge scientists have studied the "industrial" side of the agroindustrial complex just as carefully.

They found that the successful use of electric power from the huge nuclear reactors in the processes of producing fertilizer and industrial produce depends on how low the cost of the power is.

Taking generally accepted estimates of what the cost of power from large nuclear reactors will be in the not too distant future, the Oak Ridge team figured the cost of producing a range of fertilizer and industrial products at several sites in foreign countries and in the U. S. They combined these products into six different hypothetical

"product mixes," which they found could be profitably produced in the agro-inductrial complexes.

The Atomic Industrial Forum -- a broadly representative group of industrial and other organizations devoted to encouraging the constructive applications of nuclear energy here and abroad — believes that scientific and technological advances in nuclear power reactors over the next 15 to 20 years will significantly bring down the cost of electric power. The presently operating and planned light water type of nuclear reactors "burn" or fission only about one per cent of the uranium fuel. Advanced types of reactors now on the drawing boards are expected to be much more efficient. Especially, the fast, breeder reactor, which will produce more fuel than it consumes, will be able to put forth exceedingly low-cost electric power. The industry hopes that commercially acceptable fast breeder reactors will begin producing power by about 1985.

The significance of the ever-decreasing cost -L- relatively speaking — of electrical energy was pointed out by Dr. Weinberg, Oak Ridge's director.

With lower cost power, he said, "We may see chemical processes increasingly substitute energy for other raw materials. To take an extreme example, power at 1 mill per killowatt hour could play an important role in the liquification of coal. If these extremely low costs of energy are ever achieved, the demand for energy could be expected to rise dramatically."

Forerunners of and variations on the Oak Ridge type of agro-industrial complex are now being planned in several parts of the world. One such veriation would utilize the huge reservoir of water under the ground in the Indo-Gangetic Plain in India.

Large nuclear power plant8 would pump up the water and provide the power for maniufacturing 'fertilizer.

Indian farmers have already had some success in growing a new, dwarf wheat which can produce yields seven times that of the usual wheat produced in India. With reliable sources of water and fertilizer, a giant step could be taken in alleviating starvation in India.

The AEC is now studying the poten tial of nuclear "energy centers" in tin' Middle East, with the hope that such increased economic activity might help calm some of the tensions there. Another study, of the possibilities of a nuclear desalting complex in the Far

These tentative beginnings and the development of the agro-industrial Center as envisaged by the Oak Ridge planners will lead to an even better tomorrow. Looking ahead "a few decades„" Dr. ,Seaborg imagined an era "when the cost of nuclear electric power is substantially below the cost of electric power today, when we have developed a new alchemy in dealing with our resources and our waste, and when we have finally reached the enlightened stage socially and politically to put all this knowledge and power to good use.

"Imagine a vast industrial center whose energy heart would be a group of large breeder reactors, in the multimillion killowatt range with their own fuel recycling facilities. Into this complex would pour via cargo transport and pipelines a variety of new raw materials and old waste. The waste - would be of the same variety we have today but we would no longer be burdened with the job of trying to store it and stack it until we could burn it, bury it, or dump it into our waterways.

This waste would be sorted and separated into basic materials , then routed with the new raw materials into the prOper mannfacturing Plants to become new products. Whatever could not be reused might be returned to nature, but only after it had been put in a readily absorbable and relatively non-polluting form. There would be a minimum of excess heat from the reactor coolants to pose any environmental problems because we would be applying .so much of the heat, productivity, in ways ranging from desalting to space heating and buildings.

"With a little further stretch of the imagination, one can forsee such large nuclear-powered industrial complexes (Nuplexes) highly automated, efficient and clean, as the nuclei of a nation's major industrial areas responsible for most of its products and power."

All over the world, nuclear scientists and engineers and the nuclear industry are striving to make the dreams of Dr: Seaborg, and of President Roosevelt, come true.

"Defending Your Castle" More than three centuries ago, England's Lord Coke proclaimed that "a man's house is his castle." It still is.

Generally speaking, you have a right to repel an unlawful intruder, using as much force as is necessary — including even deadly force. For example: A home owner, hearing someone pry open his kitchen door in the middle of the night, grabbed a gun and went to investigate. Entering the dark kitchen, he demanded that the intruder identify himself. When the man instead began to move forward menacingly; the home owner fired a fatal shot.

Although brought to trial later on a homicide charge, he was found not guilty. The court said that, considering the threatening circumstances, he was within his legal rights in defending the sanctity of his "castle."

The doctrine is not meant to protect your home merely as a pile of bricks and mortar, but rather as a personal haven of safety for you and your family. Therefore, it applies just as much to premises you rent as to premises you own.

Furthermore, you may act not only against an intruder but also against a visitor who refuses to leave when you tell him to.

On the other hand, you must not in any event use more force than is reasonably necessary under the circumstances. Take this case: A man talking politics with a visiting neighbor became incensed and asked him to leave. The neighbor arose to go.

But he did not move fast enough for his erstwhile host, who speeded him along with a vicious kick. Result: the home owner was held liable for assault and battery. The court said the kick was simply not justified by the circumstances.

Nor may you arbitrarily widen your legitiMate circle of defense. In another case a girl's protective father saw, approaching the house, a youth whom he had ordered to stay away. The father opened his front door, stepped outside, and shot the caller in the arm.

Here too the home owner was ordered to pay damages.

"A man's house is his castle," said the court, "but he has no right to go (outside) and attempt to kill a man who has done no act indicating the intention of making forcible entry."

The well was drilled by Edwin L. Drake, a railroad conductor, who had hired a blacksmith and his two sons to help in the digging. They struck solid rock at 36 feet, then started drilling.
