To more than 50 minim, American families, father will be a 1.)4 man on June 15th. Though Father's Day was first started in 1910 in Spokane, Wash. it was not as well celebrated in its early years as it is today. From a modest beginning, Father's Day is now a very important occasion sentimentally and commercially. The best is none too good for father, and in our Czech-American background he is still the respected member and head of the family.

And — all over this country, during May and June, class after class of young Americans is graduating from. many different schools, taking that long ste p forWard, followin • several years of preparation, into the demanding world of today a world filled with trouble and uncertainty.

We members of older p:nerations congratulate our young people and welcome them as our future leaders.

Though our nation is powerful, we ',Must adMit that we are in a hostile world and have Many enemies. ThoUgh our problems are great, this is nothing new as generations before us have struggled with many social and internal problems, some of them solved and some still demanding a reasonable solution. These unsolved problems include the relation of the races, which involves indirectly the conth wing destructive riots in many, man y cities, a steady rise in crime and delinquency, and the seeming diminishing of equal rights for all uoon which our country was founded. Lesser evils of what many , call a decay in our 'civilization are preoccupation with sadism and perversion on television, movies, and in books, a lack of effort on the part of many to do an honest day's work for pay, and those who live be-. yond their means, grasping for the luxurious ill material things.

LODCE NO. 88, HOUSTON'S BARBECU (Photo by Waldo Ha LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, The enclosed picture is a front view of our much talked about Barbecue House which has recently been completed except for minor interior work.

We now have one more item to be proud of. Besides the two barbecue pits we also have several deep fat fryers and the serving area is airconditiond. This project is somewhere near $12,000 and so we still need donations. Donations can be mailed to the Barbecue House Fund, Lodge 88, 1435 Beall St. Houston, Texas 77008.

The names of all donors will be published in the Vestnik at a future date.

Donors who have donated $5 or more will have their names on a plaque.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: Linda Bartek and Lynda Petr, chairmen of the 1968-69 Teen Entertainment Committee cordially invite all adults, teen and youth members of Lodge 84 to attend the annual Silver Tea honoring the past and present teen club officers. Robert was presented the American Legion Gold Medal for Military Fuellence; first place in the city of Dallas.

This medal is awarded with a plaque which stays with the school the cadet represents for one year. This was the first time in the 48-year history of the North Dallas High School ROTC that this award was won by one of its cadets.

loan Legion in Memory of Colonel Alvin Owsley. past National Commander of the American Legion, Robert was also selected to the Brigade Staff. This is a group of 12 officers and non-commissioned officers, selected from nearly 3,000 cadets in the Dallas area. ROTC program, who honorarily command the 21 ROTC Battalions in the Dallas area.

Robert had planned to take Air Force ROTC at North Texas State University next fall, but instead he will join the U.S. Marines' Platoon Leader Class, which is an officer candidate program.

Robert and his parents are members of Lodge 84, Dallas.

Our President Mrs. Elizabeth Bielefeld opened the meeting. Minutes from the previous meeting were read by the Secretary Anton Svoboda.

We have a new member Pearl Stievers Campbell. Members with paid up policies are Alvin Hrna, Joseph Bayer, John Charles Svoboda.

It was decided that we, needed signs made to put on the hall so people would know they were at the SPJST Hall. William Pavliska volunteered to make this one We also thought one could be put at the "T" where FM 1303 meets FM Road 1518. Lighting around the hall was also discussed, Henry Sralla said he would check on this.

Gifts were given to the oldest mother present Mrs. John Pavliska, and the youngest Mrs. Robert. Bayer. We thank you A game party followed the meeting which everyone enjoyed very much.

The next meeting will be held on June 22, at 2 p. m. Members are to bring refreshments which will be available during the game party which will begin at 4 p. m. Hope to see more of our members present and bring along a friend.

June 3, 1969 FROM THE PRKIDENT'S OFFICE Dear Members: hi my report this week.. I wish to touch on a number of matters, From time to time, we are questioned about the ranking or standing of our lodges, and which ones rank near the top in membership. We have checked our records and come up with some rather interesting statistics.

These figures show that our situation is, quite fluid in some lodges and that lodge strength is changing almost week to week. In the accompanying table, you will see the lodge strength of the top 10 lodges in our Society as of a certain date. Study this table Well. The biggest gain in membership over the past, two years was made by Lodge 88, Houston. Right after Lodge 88, the biggest gains were made by Lodge 47, Seaton, which gained 203 members for the same period.

The Supreme Lodge is in the midst of clearing the newly-acquired property where we will build our new headquarters building. In our July meeting of the Supreme Lodge we will consider the value of the 4 surplus lots that adjoin our other lots, for the possiblity

of sale-. We will use 6 a/tz, uc We 10 for our own purpose, lff•.1 ,. g 4 for sale.

The soil-test probes revealed no obstacles as far as excavation is concerned. I will keep you posted on building developments, Also accompanying this report are several pictures that I hope Brother Sefcik will have 'Tom for in this issue.

We thought the membership would like to see our smiling countenances and see the team that you now have in the Supreme Lodge. We also included the office staff, although we did not get State Youth Director Bro. James Janousek into the picure. (We'll not miss him next time for sure!). We ineluded pictures of "some other individuals who had a big hand in our recent dealings and will have in the construction of our new building. Messrs, Aldrich, Junek, and Voelter are all members of the SPJST, Mr. Junek. having been a member for a good many years with his family. Mr. Vail Logsdon, Mr. Voelter's partner, is also a member.

A comment or two on the spring district meetings: some of these were very well attonded; and others were not. Two of the districts set an alltime record in attendance, and this is wonderful. This attests to great interest in the affairs of our SPJST, and all of us here appreciate that. I would again counsel presiding 4ficers to study up on parliamentary procedure, so that these meetings are as smoothly run as possible. The availability of PA systems should be checked out ahead of time to see that one is available and in good working order. After you get to the meeting place it is too late to start remedial action. Remember also that we have a very fine

portable PA system available to lodges and we will gladly bring it for your use. Let us know ahead of time.

I would also like to re-emphasize here what I have been saying at all the district meetings and that is that no one should allow Lhernsclves to be nominated and subsequently elected to any office unless they can devote sufficient time and effort to the position.

If you are elected, you will be expected to give the job all you've got in the way of time and talent. Your peers expect that of you since they had enough confidence in you to elect you. Excuses such as, "I don't really have the time," or, "I didn't really want the job, but they forced it on me" are absolutely not acceptable. If this is the case, don't accept the nomination in the first place. This goes for any position at any level in our SPJST. Brother Urbanovsky ha:; reported the minutes of both our regular meeting on April 9-10 and our special meeting on April 22nd, and if you have followed the Vestnik carefully, you have ve noticed other developments in other departments. The respective officers will be reporting on these developments. I might add only that our mortgage loan commitments are running a little ahead of money available, especially for the first six monr the of this year. Loan applications may have slowed just a little, but we're not hurting for lack of them. We hope that we can avoid borrowing money to satisf y our borrowers.

We are gratified that a good many lodges have secured bondz; for their financial secretaries and/or treasurers.

This is a good practice and we realize that many lodges had already seen to this for a good many years. We have noted that our lodges are paying more attention to audits, as required by our by-laws. If your lodge has not had an audit of the lodge books this year, prevail upon your lodge president to see to this. This is anoilier reminder that our 1972 convention will be held in the Rice Hotel in Houston the week of June 18, 1972. Brother Urbanovsky and I will go to Houston sometime soon to complete arrangements with hotel officials. I had this information in my March report, but there still seems to be a little confusion about some of the aspects of this matter. Payments will be made based on the anniversary date of the certificate, in the amount of 2% of. the reserve on all certificates in force at least five years. (This 2% was set by the Supreme Lodge and may be increased or decreased each year, according to our overall financial condition). Refunds will be made in the amount of at least $1.00. Checks will be mailed to the lodge secretaries for distribution. Most of the members will conic to the lodge meetings and pick up their checks, or send for them. For those who do not, the lodge secretary will have to make an effort to get the checks to the member, most likely by mail, if the member is an invalid or if coming to the meeting would cause a hardship, or if the member lives too far away.

Use your good judgment in these cases.

Our first .mailing of these premium refund checks will take place around the first of July, in time for those lodges having meetings on the first Sunday. This first batch of checks will include checks covering those certificates whose anniversary dates were in January, February, and March of this year. Then, on or about August 1st, we will mail checks covering the certificates whose anniversary dates were in April, May, and June. On or about September 1st, we will do the same for those whose anniversary dates were in July, and thereafter continue on a month-by-month basis.

Regarding questions on singlepremium policies which have been in force less than 5 years, Vice President Hejny has checked with our actuary, and he has adviSed us to pay premium refunds on those certificates the same as we will in monthly or annual premiums, if they have been in force at least 5 years.

All of us have been doing a good

deal of travelling these past few months. There just don't seem to be enough weekends and Sundays to get around to everything. Sometimes a situation changes abruptly and plans have to be changed at the last moment. We enjoy weekends at borne with our families also, since we are on the go so much, so please bear with us and understand our situation if we are not available on a given occasion.

At this time, prospects look good for organizing new lodges in Rockdale (District II), and New Braunfels (District VII). We have a good many members in both towns who would like to have their own local lodge. We are supporting this action to the fullest.

It is a great honor to have this opportunity to serve as youth leader of our lodge. I hope I can accomplish all the outstanding things that our past youth leader, Sister Rosie Tumis, did.

Dear Readers, This is my first letter to the Vestas an assistant youth leader. We ve several things already started, such as 'two fund-raising projects.

This month we will sell candy and have a paper chive. The candy was distributed at the youth meeting. Anyone with paper for the drive is to deposit it in the paper box at the lodge hall.

For the month of June, the teens will have a swimming party and picnic on June 14. An activity for the juniors will be later on in the month. More details will follow.

We are also busy with the Y AD. All members who wish to enter must get entry blanks from the youth leader.

Our lodge had four high school graduates: Carol Glialoupka, Henry Linhart, Mike Tumis, and Paul Veselka. To these four we wish success in the future in whatever they decide to undertake. All the members in our club are enjoyhig their summer vacation.

To Wein, I hope they enjoy the "breather" from books and studying.

Summer should be a time for enjoying life and being busy with all the fun summer holds in store.

LODGE 153, LA SALLE

Dear Readers, After several weeks of planning and then postponing a couple of times, we had our wiener roast and hayride. It was an exciting group of youngsters that met at Sembera's Store to ride in the back of a pick-up to the park.

Once there, the group scattered to gather fire wood, and get a fire started so the coals would be just right for roasting time.

The youngsters formed their groups and then spent an enjoyable evening playing ball. At the sound of the signal they gathered around to cook their own or just prepare what was cooked, and enjoy their meal. They all joined in to clean up the picnic area before we left to go on our hayride.

This was a first for many of our young members to ride on a long, long trailer full of hay. There was much merriment among the 25 youngsters as we started our ride.

A word of appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Vincik for their time and equipment to make the hayride passible. We are certainly grateful for their interest and help to our club.

The committee that planned the hayride are Ronnie Sralla. Sally Sembera, Junior James, Marilyn Vincik, and Diane Dyson. We think they did a fine job in arranging for a most enjoyable evening for our club.

Ledge No. 66 enjoyed horseback riding at the Stanislav's home on May 23: Everyone enjoyed riding on Co-Co and Trudy. We also had a wiener roast.

On June 1, we went to Six Flags Over Texas. 'lie youth and adults went by bus. The best ride was the RUnAway Mine. Train. Everyone enjoyed Six Flags very ;much.

Under old business, a discussion was held on volleyball.

New business was the election of view officers for the on-coming year.

My other brother, Derald Lee, graduated from the 9th grade' h e is 16 years old and cute.

On May the 2, 1 got cheerleader in Anson Jones, Jr. High School. It is a lot of fun to be a cheerleader. We are going to cheerleader camp June 28 Aug. 1. We are going to have a lot of fun there.

Our last meeting was May 31. We have a lot of fun at our meeting's. It' we didn't have Aunt Shirley, we wouldn't have as much fun.

Wednesday, June 11, )69 LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers, it was on the third day of June, the first Tuesday of the month that the youth of Lodge 153, La Salle, had their first meeting of the ZiPjST youth fiscal year.

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m., but the procedures did not begin until about an hour later because it was hoped that more members would arrive. We played the game part of our meeting, baseball, until about 3 p.m.

When we did begin our business meeting, with all new officers ready to go for a hopefully successful 196970, Carol Williams said a prayer; Junior James led the pledge to the United States Flag; Marilyn Vincik led the SPJST motto, and Debbie Ledkins led the SPJST fraternal song.

Besides discussing camp, the dinner cur youth club served_, etc., we discussed the wiener roast held on Saturday May 31, which we considered to be ro . s . ute a success. We began at Bennett Park at 6:30 on Saturday afternoon by gathering wobci, playing ball, and just "goofb,kg off." Later, after having the wiener roast and cleaning up, we had our hayride.

May 30th was a 'very busy day for our yOuth club. First, we hnd a barbecue supper for all the y0uth members and their parents.

Next, we had a graduation party for our three high school graduates. They are: Carol Chaloupka; graduate of Sam Houston Sr. High; Paul Veselka and Michael Tumis, both graduates of John H. Reagan Sr. High.

Following this was our June meeting. David Chaloupka presented our president, Marilyn Veselka, 'with a gavel which he Made. The pledge of allegiance was led by our former youth leader, Mrs. Rosie Turnis.

There are quite a few members hav ing birthdays this month. They are: Dennis Veselka, Mike Tumis, Elizabeth Tumis, Henry Hermis, Joe Luvan'. Randy Havran, and Douglas Lueckerneyer. New members of our youth club this month are: Pat, Cindy, and Charles Hearn; Rodney, Brian, Bruce, Woodrow, and Darrell Duve; and Michelle Liles.

Our youth leader for 1969-70 is Mrs. Wilma Havran. Her assistants are Mrs. Doris Dove and Mrs. Nona Liles.

This month we are having a candy sale as our money-making project. An all-day picnic to Hot Wells has been planned for the teenagers. A paper box has been placed at the lodge for the members to bring their papers.

The money from the paper sale will be used for other activities.

Each family was given a Youth Rule Book and each child received his

19 personal sheet for his points and the YAD talent and craft cards.

By Bro. Walter Hosek EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY The members of SPJST Lodge No. 91 of Crosby, express their sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge brother, JOE J. JASEK, who died early Monday, May 19, in a Lake Jackson Hospital, at the age of 74 years.

Mr. Jasek was born in Ettinger, Texas and while he was a youth the family moved to the Crosby area, where he had lived the remainder of his life. He and his wife ( Alma Clawson Jasek) and the two boys farmed until World War II, at which time he worked for Humble Refinery in Baytown. After the war he was employed by Harris County where he worked until his retirement at the age of 72.

Mr. Jasek was an appraiser and adjuster for RVOS Lodge in Crosby, a member of the Crosby Methodist Church, and an SPJST member since January 7, Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alma Jasek of Crosby; two sons, Albert W. Jasek of Houston and Leonard D. Jasek of Lake Jackson; four brothers, Ike and Ed Jasek and John J. Franta of Crosby and Albert H. Franta of Baytown; four sisters, Mrs. Rosie Stasney, Mrs. Tony Slovacek and Mrs. Sidle, Lostak of Crosby and Mrs. Arnelie Prikryl of Taylor: five grandchildren and one greategrandehild.

Funeral services were held in the Crosby Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 20, 1969. The Rev. James E. MeCollar o f the Crosby Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in the White Cemetery.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 18, Elgin, Texas. in behalf of our lodge, express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, 4r I W MAREK, who passed away April 14, 1969, in the Balch Nursing -Home, Elgin. He was born August 8, 1887 in Austin County. tie came to Elgin in 1906. In 1909, he

married Alvinia D'ytrich, who was to be his bride of 53 years. She preceded him in death on June 7, 1962. They lived in Granger about two years and returned to Elgin where Mr. Marek was in the shoe repair business until failing health forced him to close his business in November, 1968.

He was a member of Lodge 18 for 61 years and held the office of secretary for 45 years.

He is survived by three children, Alfred Marek, Elgin, Mrs. M. F. Spiegelhatter, Victoria, and Mrs. Joe Haisler, Jr., of Elgin and five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held April 25, 1969 in the St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Jerry Thane and Herman Eugeling officiating. Burial was in the Elgin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Brother Horelica were held Thursday, May 8 at 2 p. m, at the Triska Chapel in East Bernard with Rev. Vernon Feller officiating. Interment was in the family plot in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard. Triska. Funeral Home was in charge.

Mr. Fioreilea was born in Schulenburg, Texas on February 8, 1880 and was a retired farmer, He loved gardening, and flowers. lie was a lone time resident of the East Bernard and Tanever Communities. The deceased was a member of our SPJST lodge for a long time and was a good member.

He is survived by his fice sons: Adolph Horelica„ and Rudolph Horelien both of host Bernard, Louie Boreilea of Wallis, Richard and Oscar Harelica both of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Christine Sabrsula of Rosenberg and Mrs. Gertrude Michalek of Houston; 23 grandchildren and 51 greatgrandchildren.

The Institute of Life Insurance reports that the two diseases took the lives of nearly three out of every five life insurance policyholders who died last year. The survey on which this figure is based covered "'ordinary," policyholders.

Heart, di:sea:se accounted for 40.2 per cent of deaths of these policyholders in U.3. companies during 1968. Tire toll from cancer was 19.6 per cent.

As recently as 1944 cancer and heart disease combined were responsible for only about half of policyholder deaths the Institute'noted.
