FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK In this issue you will find an editorial that was delayed on purpose.

First, your editor wished to write about the District VII meeting at the same time that the pertinent facts pertaining to it were complete, and second, he also wished to include all of the thoughts he gathered while attending the meeting, and the photos had to be processed for printing.

However, the Fox Film Company closed their Waco processing branch and all work is being sent to Dallas. In the process, the film was lost and not located until Thursday of this week. This is being inserted Saturday a.m. and your editor still does not have them.

We are sure this will be corrected. We sincerely regret the 2-week delay. The meeting was well attended and proceeded in a very efficient mariner.

Your editor noticed that each of the Supreme Lodge officers spoke very briefly and your editor tried to do likewise, for these are in reality district meetings where they have a rather large amount of district business to take care of. If each speaker were to take thirty minutes to deliver his or her message, the district would be at a loss as to what to do with their business.

Your editor and family certainly enjoyed the trip, meeting and especially the youth program. We had the opportunity to view the Robstown Youth

I used to often watch him, his walks take As he .traveled from here to there.

Leaving hope and laughter in his wake.

Oh, yes, what an epitaph to wear!

Club bus, and it really is something they can be proud of. The youth program was well presented and we wish to give our sincerest compliments to the youth of Corpus Christi in their rendition of their Czech songs! Lodge 56 youth members spent many hours rehearsing with their youth leaders, and they received a loud round of applause. Just keep it up you young folks!

Remember, no matter which language you learn besides English, be it Czech, German, French, Spanish, Norwegian or any other, you will be that much richer.

I would advise all of our youth to read the first article under the "Items of Interest!' on page 14 of the Vestnik of Wednesday, April 23, titled "CZECH PROFESSOR TO JOIN TEA STAFF AS CONSULTANT." See how many languages he has mastered. Give this some thought for you are only limited as far as you limit yourselves.

40 • Pursuit of Happiness -- Happiness: the word itself arouses a certain feeling within the innermost part of the heart of each and every one of tia. Who LS not in pursuit of happiness? Who is not constantly angling for ways and means to attain that certain feeling of happiness, that, rightly so or not, will result in the happiness, as defined by each individual?

Happiness — how much grief and strife has been caused by the struggle to achieve it before it finally made its way to some one who gave all but his life for it?

Happiness is not measured in the same degree by all — some are happy for the sheer job of being alive. Others find happiness in Sacrificing their lives for the betterment of mankind.

Still others find a quiet sort of hap-

To forget, and 2. Knowing what t forget. How true! How many of us stil really do harbor old resentments the only harm others, and truthfully more so ourselves! Think about this 4 9 Our forefathers who pioneered it this America we know today, were it pursuit of happiness — not for themselves as much as for those whom they left behind in their native land. 11 was with the main ebjective that they find means of a livelihood in a strangc land, which would afford them an opportunity to sustain their loved one, at home.

This pursuit of happiness is what brought about the discovery , of America -- it brought, about its growth and a melting pot of peoples and nations — whose primary aim was — to achieve happiness.

Their definition of happiness was to provide at least a temporary cushion for their loved ones, and their concern of theirs has grown and been nurtured within our great fraternal Society.

What greater happiness can we enjoy, than in the knowledge that we have provided for those who will follow our life path? True, we strive to work to make a better living wage, but this more often than not, leads not to greater provisicns in ease of our demise, but rather to further or expand our mode of living to the extent which leaves the survivors in financial stress in case of the death of the wage earner.

A much surer way to save and provide for our loved ones is by making a plan and investing part of our earnings in the form of insurance premiums most suitable for the family's circumstances. Thus, a set amount is being paid monthly on a life policy, which carr i es after thai, allotted time dividends and cos._' reserve, and in the event of death the full face value of the certificate is paid to the beneficiaries.

To be a good provider for your family ---- you must be insurance conscious.

This is being provided not only in our home life — cur fraternal government itself advocates insurance of all sorts against unemployment, disability,_ old age, etc.

Wednesday, April 30, 1969' If you are already a member of the EPJST, check over your life insurance and see if you are adequately insured.

If not, now is the time to make the adjustment by taking out another certificate or increasing your present one, also, if your wife or child are not insured — do not overlook the serious effect their passing would have on your budget, if you do not carry a life insurance certificate on them.

LETTERS Houston, Texas April 23, 1969 "WITH MANY THANKS" After five weeks of convalescing I am in fair enough condition to write these lines to express my sincere thanks to my lodge brothers and sisters and friends, for the lovely getwell cards and words of encouragement for my recovery, for taking time to visit me in the hospital, for the telephone inquiries regarding my health, and for all the beautiful flowers and gifts. This all made me very grateful to be alive and have another chanae to enjoy the friendship of my lodge brothers and sisters and friends. Life is hard but beautiful after all, for it is much, much later than any of us realize.

OF THE DISTRICT II SPRING MEETING April 20. 1969 The District TI Spring Meeting was held at Lodge 80, Holland, on April 20, 1969.

District II President, Frank Klinkovsky, called the meeting to order and Joe Fronek led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Brother Barabas, President of Lodge 80, welcomed everyone, and Brother Frank Klinkovsky made the response to the welcoming address.

The gathering than observed a moment of silent prayer for deceased memberS. The roll call of district officers revealed that all were present as follows: President — Frank Klinkovsky Secretary — Sidney Kacir Treasurer — Alfred Gensler Reporter -- Katherine Walker District Youth Director -- Emily Igikeska District Organizer — Lad ZatOpek District Director — Henry Vitek MINUTFS

VESTNfK Brother Edwin Kovar, Rest Home Director, was also present.

The minutes of the fall meeting were read by Secretary Sidney Kacir, The minutes were approved on a motion by Brother Henry Vitek and then certified by the District II President.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky then called on the District II Officers for their reports.

District II Treasurer, Alfred Gensler, reported that the old balance was $152.21. The sum of $33.00 was expend, ed for the fall meeting in Taylor; the sum of $36.66 for notebooks and accessories, leaving a balance of $82.55.

The 5 cent contribution by lodges in District II amounted to $144.20 for a balance as of the beginning of today's meeting of $226.75.

District II Youth Director, Emily Mikeska, recognized the youth leaders present and gave a report on youth activities. Sister Mikeska stated that the District YAD will be held this year on June 22 at Taylor. Sister Mikeska recommended that a permanent date be set for the District YAD (see later minutes for action taken on this recommendation).

Sister Mikeska also reported on the fact that the youth leaders had recommended approval of a permanent family youth camp and on the recommendation that the State YAD be separated and held on two different dates (see later minutes in this regard).

District II Organizer, Lad Zatopek reported on insurance sales to date this year and recognized all of the local organizers. Brother Zatopek called on Brother Leonard Mikeska to present the certificate to the lodge that secured the most members for the year 1968. Brother Mikeska presented the certificate to Brother Joe Barabas who accepted the award In behalf of Lodge 80, Holland.

District II Director, Henry Vitek, spoke and commented on his work as a director and spoke about insurance sales and told of the new site that has been obtained for the new Supreme Lodge home office building.

Brother Edwin Kovar, rest home director, stated that the addition of the new wing to the rest home is expected to be completed by July 1, and stated that the land had been purchased for the new rest home at Needville.

Brother Ed Gaida, manager of the rest home at Taylor, and his wife were recognized.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky then recognized the following: Brother Nick Morris, President of the SPJST and

3 his wife. Brother Morris stated that the State Youth Achievement Day date as approved by the Supreme Lodge will be held on a trial basis on two different dates.

This change was brought about because the program has been too long as conducted in the past. Lodge 29, Taylor, will host the arts and crafts this year. The location of the talent contest will be announced later.

Brother Morris also spoke on the land site purchase- for the new •upreme Lodge building and the proposed plans. He also read an editorial that appeared in the Temple Daily Telegram and invited questions from the members.

Brother Leonard Mikeska, treasurer of the Supreme Lodge, and his wife were recognized.

Brother August Kacir, legal advisor of the Supreme Lodge, spoke and reminded the 'members that the SPJST since its founding has been vitally interested in youth and particularly in their education and training. He reminded the members that the Czech Ex-Student Association Student Loan Fund was organized in 1917 and that all of the founders of this fund worked their way through the university.

These funds are available to students attending the University of Texas.

Brother Rudy Sefcik, editor of the Vestnik, and his wife were recognized.

Brother Sefcik spoke of his visit to the rest home and gave an interesting talk.

Brother Edward L. Marek, honorary president of the SPJST, and his wife were recognized. Brother Marek commended the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge. ,E'everal visitors from Lodge 25 F1' were recognized and were welcomed to the District II meeting.

Brother Sid Pokladnik, director of District III, and his wife were recognized. Brother Pokladnik spoke on the work of the SPJST and stated that the assets were now in excess of $16 million and loans in excess of $13 million.

District VII Director and past treasurer, Jos. Koliha, was recognized and he gave an interesting talk.

Brother Klinkovsky then read the names and recognized the members who have attained 50-year membership in the SPJST. Tere being no unfinished business, the floor was open for new business.

Sister Emily Mkeska moved thot a permanent date be set for the District Youth Achievement date on the last

4 Sunday of June. Brother Andrew Marek moved that the district not have a permanent date for the District YAD because the host lodge may have a conflict with a permanent date. Brother Marek's motion was seconded by Brother Coleman Benner and Brother IVIarek's motion carried.

The roll call of lodges of District II showed that ten out of the fourteen lodges were represented. The lodges represented at the time of the roll call were: Lodge No. Present Number Place at roll call 15 Buckholts 2 20 Granger 12 24 Flag Hall 14 Taylor 44 29 47 Seaton 88 26 48 Beyersville 2 New Colony 69 80 Holland 55 33 87 Temple 2 Lockhart 171 Lodge 47 Seaton with 88 members present had the largest representation.

The president of Lodge 47, Johnnie Vanicek, spoke on why they had the largest attendance.

The next item on the agenda was the selection of the new meeting site and the members decided that the fall meeting and youth activity date would be held on the same date. Brother Henry Vitek moved that the meeting be held at Camp Tahuaya on August 3rd and his motion was seconded and carried.

The next item on the agenda was the election of officers. Brother Frank Klinkovsky announced that we would have nominations from the floor.

Brothers Klinkovsky and Gensler announced they would not accept a nomination. In accordance with the bylaws of District II it was announced that wherever there is more than one candidate for an office, that the vote would be by secret ballot. Brothers Clifton Martinec, Frankie Novosad and Ed Galda were appointed to the balloting committee. The following officers were elected: President — Howard Leshikar (Lodge 48) Vice-President — Andrew Marek (Lodge 29) Secretary — Sidney Kacir (Lodge 87) Treasurer — Willie Kohutek (Lodge 47) Reporter — Katherine Walker (Lodge 29) District Yduth Director — Jerlene Balusek (Lodge 47)

VPSTNIK Substitute Youth Director — Amelia Pokorny (Lodge 29) Flag Bearer — Dan Balusek (Lodge 47) Sister EmiZy Mikeska and Sister Johnnie Motl were also nominated for district youth director. No candidate received a majority of the votes cast and there was a run-off between Sister Balusek and Sister Mikeska. The other candidates were unopposed.

During the discussion on voting for a substitute youth director, it was pointed out that Article 57 of the ByLaws as adopted by the last convention provides for the election of a substitute youth director and this office is not covered by the District II By-Laws.

Sister Francis Bartek moved that the youth director and substitute youth director can be from the same lodge.

This motion was seconded and carried by a two-thirds vote.

Brother Johnnie Vanicek recommended that a by-law committee be appointed to revise the District II bylaws to conform to the by-laws as adopted by the last convention. Brother Klinkovsky announced that a fivemember by-law committee would be appointed by the new president and vice-president, and that no two members would be appointed from the same lodge. This is to be done between now and the fall meeting.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky and Brother Alfred Gensler were commended for their fine performance as district president and district treasurer.

The youth program followed and the youth presented an excellent program.

Following the youth program, members and visitors enjoyed an excellent supper prepared by the good brothers and sisters of Lodge 80.

Other youth activities followed which will be reported elsewhere.

Fraternally, Sidney Kacir District II Secretary DISTRICT V OFFICERS REPORT District Fund Raising Benefit for the Youth at the American Le,gion Hall, Needville, Texas, Sunda y, April 20, 1969 Brothers and ',Sisters of District Five: Two weeks ago this coming Sunday, we had our Youth Fund Raising Rally.

Sometime back in. January of this year a date was picked for this event and was followed by some extensive advertising by way of this Vestnik, printed signs, radio spot announcements, verbal appeals at the various lodge meetings and by word of mouth

to whoever we saw.

Well! Whoever takes San Jacinto Day off to go out of town except on a long weekend, and with such a beautiful Saturday . . .it never rains on Sunday!

You have all seen at some time, a shopkeeper standing in the doorway of his shoo wringing his hands, awaiting a customer (he hopes) to show up.

That was your district officers that Sunday morning.

As a newly elected president at his first fund raising project, my normal 38 waist felt like it was rung into a size 16 for not only did we want to add to the coffers of the youth finances but we had bills for meat, beans, beer, soda, rent and so on to pay, too! However, if you remain optimistic enough — like that fellow said, "It ain't never so bad that it can't be gooder.'! With an attendance of around two hundred sixty well wishing brothers and sisters, we came out smiling with surprised success.

The officers-• most sincerely want to thank so very, much all of the sisters who worked with the youth games, the adult social games and those who worked so long and diligently in the kitchen and pastry bar.

Forty-two lovely sisters donated pastries consisting of a wonderful variety of pies, cakes and kolaches.

Without missing anyone, Lodge 81 had 13 pastry donors, Lodge 88 had 8 pastry donors, Lodge 146 bud 3 pastry donors and Lodge 142 had 18 pastry donors. Thank you, sweet donors, you certainly helped a lot to flavor our day.

To all of you sacrificing brothers who came out, not only to be enticed from your shekels but who were conscripted to assist the district officers in the kitchen, soda and beer bars and in selling tickets, we want to thank yon too, so very very much for your generosity and assistance -- don't go away — we'll need even more like you to aid at our next district function.

On the lighter side, it was something to see Brother Amos Kadlecek working in, of all places, the soda bar!

I've heard it said his "poor heart belongs to Pearl" -- beer that is! Anyway, that Amos really put out the work.

Poor Tommy Lostak (district treasurer) and Alvin Sefcik (first vice president) spent the day buried in the kitchen serving the multitude. Fact is, I don't recall even seeing either of

them having time off for a "cool one."

The expression "Dear Ole' Charlie" sure applied to past president, Brother Charlie Matcek. He was all things everywhere; an appeaser, a pleader, and one thing for sure, a man I want to keep on my side as an advisor for the rest of my tenure of office.

Then there is that skinny district director of ours who was working hard in the kitchen, of all places, and he is supposed to be on a diet. At any rate, he may be big, jolly and love to talk, but boy, he can work hard . . and at the same time sell us all a bit of the moon. I like him on my side too.

That hurricane that was always passing by wouldn't be any other than our adorable district youth director, Sister Evelyn Mattes. She was on the go so much with the youth games, she was just a blur to the eye.

To all of the wives of the officers who helped us so much and also your helpers, thanks loads, you were absolutely tops.

To all of you who aided us with love, labor and/or money, thanks a million and bless all of you who were with us.

LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON 50th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, May 25 The 50th anniversary celebration at Lodge Stefanik No. 142 will be held Sunday, May 25 beginning at 11:30 a.m. A principal speaker from the Supreme Lodge will speak. At 12 noon a barbecued chicken and sausage dinner with all the trimmings will be served.

In the afternoon there will be a program by the youth club and we will play games and have a country store.

From 5 to 9 in the evening the Clarence Baca Orchestra will furnish the music.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, This is the special weekend when you can really enjoy some nice dancing at our Chandelier Ballroom. This Saturday we can dance to the smooth music of Ray Jurecka of Weimar. Then Sunday we have the Princess Ball with the ceremonies starting at 3 p.m. Besides the crowning of the new royalty, there will be special entertainment.

There will be a sausage and sauerkraut supper served before and after, the

Morris With a beautiful bydrangen, plant after President Morris had initiated new members at Lodge 88. The picture was taken by Entertainment Chairman Harley Cox. (Sent in by Sister Helmcamp. —Ed). coronation. Then there will be a dance from 5 to 9 p.m. with the popular Clarence Baca Orchestra playing good mixed music.

The contestants in the Duchess and Duke Contest are: Jodie Elzner and Kenneth Broz, Mary Ann Horelica and Robert Knapick, Arlene Malak and Dwayne Osterhaus, Cheri Murry and Thomas Richardson, and Denise Osterhaus and Lynn Lesak. So far there are only two contestants in the Princess Contest: Becky Wright and Mary Cross, but there probably will be more.

Don't forget to buy tickets from the contestants. Youth Leader Mary Schenburn and her assistants have worked hard planning the Princess Ball, and they and the youth are hoping you will be there!

I must say the attendance at the Youth Fair at Needville was poor and must have been quite disappointing to our district officers and youth leaders.

They worked so hard, served a very good dinner, and provided other entertainment. I guess the morning rain kept many from coming; you really missed some good food and fun, which we really enjoyed!

tion followed at the K of C Hall, where a delicious supper and dancing to the music of Joe Nesvadba Orchestra of Rosenberg was enjoyed by all! Lodge members and guests were asked to stand in silence in memory of a deceased member, Raymond Plamquist.

Following our business meeting, Mr. and MI•s. Louis Marek presented a program of films and slides from their

travels to Rome and the Holy Land; everyone enjoyed seeing these beautiful pictures. A special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Marek for their interesting program.

The youth club sponsored a spaghetti supper following the program and had a fine turnout. We know Mrs. Bartek and the youth club worked very hard to make the supper a great success and everyone enjoyed the delicious food and fellowship.

Our next regular meeting will be held Tuesday night, May 6th. Vlasta Jez, chairman of the entertainment committee announced that a covered ' dish supper will be held at this meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Each member is asked to bring enough fried chicken for each family and guest and a dessert or vegetable dish. The business meeting will be held following the supper.

Oh, I know many will complain that they have nothing to wear to a farm.

Now don't rush out and buy a fancy outfit. Bro. Sid has made it clear' to dress for comfort and drive south on Highway 75 . to the 1182 Road exit then on to No. 85 turn right — go about two miles and that's it on the left. The corral is near the highway and the house has a red roof.

The Pokladniks will be out there to welcome you anytime after 10 — but you will have to wait to line-up for dinner between 12 and 12:30. Bro. Sid did suggest that if you plan to fish, before or after you eat, bring your own gear. I think prizes • are to be awarded for the largest catch and don't forget to bring your straw hat and a chair — even if you don't plan to sit in it, there's bound to be someone who will — that is if they are not busy sack racing, pitching horseshoes or playing baseball, or out on a. hayride, roasting wieners or a lot of other fun things being planned. The entertainment committee is excited about this day and we hope you are!

The chairmen all gave their quarterly reports. They were very good reports.

Health Committee — Sister Agnes Mazanec reported she had sent getwell cards to Sisters Millie Korenek, Mary ,Sinicik, Darlene Engelke, Betty Slovak and Brother Silas Smith, Sympathy cards were sent to the Jimmie Motis family on the loss of her father, the E. M. Shiller family, on the loss of their,father and husband, the James Crow family on the loss of his mother and the Henry Beseda family on the loss of his father.

I have just had a report that one of our youth members, Cindy Locke, has had an accident and was burned.

They don't think she is burned too badly. We are all sorry to hear of Cindy's hard luck and we all hope and pray that there will be no complications.

It was voted to give all teenage youth p olicy holders, ages 13 through 15 years a pass to be used for free admission once a month to the dance of their choice. Children under 13, do not have to pay and those 16 years and over are classed as adults. So you teenage youth who have a policy, get your passes from Darlene Engelke; also you members, who have not gotten your passes, will you please pick them up at the ticket window, No passes will be mailed out, so pick them up, please.

The birthday cake was baked by Cynthia Slovak for those having birthdays in April. They were, Donny and Danny Slovak, Frank Lesikar, Francis Nors, Eugene Gerlich, Johnny Gaidusek, Becky Schiemenz and Philomena Miller. Happy birthday to all of you.

The youth club had their meeting, after which a very delicious supper was enjoyed by all.

The dancing then began at 6 p.m. with music by the West Polka. Band.

This was a 'free appreciation dance given by the band, as they are now disbanding. Sorry to see them break up. Wish them lots of luck, in whatever other profession they go into.

There was a very good crowd and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Fraternally, Annie Hanus, English Reporter LODGE NO. 81, N'EEDVILLE Dear Members, The regular meeting was held at 2:30 p.m. on April 13. Our attendance was fair. All officers were present. A moment of silent tribute was paid to our members who passed away this past month: Brothers Vladimir Straznicky, Anton Pesak, Jr., Lonnie Mikeska and Frank Chernosky. We had several members sick and hospitalized. They were: Frank Zapala4, Jr., Johnnie Blinka, Rudolph Janecka and Sister Lydia Kocurek. TWo members were injured in auto accidents, Sister Annie Feleman and Bro. James Stavena. Debra Blinka broke her foot some weeks ago and is still on crutches.

Our social game night will be held every month on the third Tuesday at the lodge hall, the next one being on May 20. Bring some one with you and non-members are welcome. Don't forget your dominos and cards. Sisters are asked to bring pastries.

Reports were given by several on the District 5 meeting held in March at Lodge 88 in Houston.

Our officers will be riding in a SPJST car in the Needville Consolidated Youth Fair Parade Friday, April 25.

A filing cabinet for the secretary has been purchased.

New members admitted to our lodge are Clifton Anthony Groze, Lydia Theresa Eicher, Patrick Dorninec, Mary Lee Kaluza, Edwin Jerry Kaluza, Ernest Rybak and Mildred Kamas.

Due to wet grass the belated Easter egg hunt was not held. The eggs were distributed among all the members present and prizes drawn.

Door prizes were donated by Sister Annie Matcek and Ella Suchma. Mrs. Lee Hausler and Bro. Arnold Franek were the recipients.

Dear Members, The number of members attending cur meeting last Monday should have been larger but with all that baseball being played and aching backs from pulling all of those weeks in the yard — one shouldn't expect a larger group — but we keep hoping.

We have two new candidates this month. Gary L. Altman and Mary Martinets. We invite you to come and get acquainted. Who knows — you just might becbme a "regular" for our monthly meetings — which last about an hour. Our president, Bro. Sid Pokladnik, helps to get the business at hand completed with one eye on the elock.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the teens' smorgasbord dinner and the Easter party for the junior youth were big successes.

Have you looked into the youth room? Weren't you pleasantly surprised? Credit' for all of the work goes to the husbands of the youth leaders -Bros. George Mandak; Lewis Mandak, Edwin Petr, Emil Petr and George Reznik. Our photographer should take a picture to be shown to everyone. I know the children are tired of us gazing in.

The entertainment cdmmittee announces a change of policy effective immediately. For all local band dances the charge for admission is $1.50. For dances featuring an out-oftown orchestra, the price is $2 per person. No longer will the third Saturday dance be free to the membership -but you can still enjoy the benefits of this lodge — such as the picnic which you will be able to enjoy for a very nominal charge of 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children under 14 --your choice of barbecue on bun or barbecued hot dog on bun, served with potato chips, pickles, onion, mustard, mayonnaise, cookies and Kool Aid and if your child wants a plain bun with mustard hot-dog, then 10 cents will get him one. Dear Members, Our meeting went off as scheduled, everyone had a fine time visiting and enjoying the great food.

S GETAALL •M REPORT Dear Brothers and Sisters, This marks the 16th season for our lodge to field a softball team in the Dallas City Commercial Softball Association. Where are the skeptics who said we would never last? Speaking for myself and for Bro, Ben David, we are glad that the team is continuing to be a tradition at our lodge. The interest is still there, the "old timers" are still young and spry enough to continue playing and every season, we seem to pick up youngsters who are willing to keep the team, going. We welcome the following newcomers to the team this season, Gary Hill, Doug Hillis, Garry Altman and Drnie Genthner, plus the same crew from laSt season. I will name all of the team members in one of my future writeups.

The last count we had was 22 members coming out for the team, which truly indicates that the interest and desire is still there.

This season we will again play two nights a week, Monday night, on Samuel Grand, Diamind No. 1, and Thursday night, Samuel Grand, Diamond No. 3. We opened league play Monday, April 21, with a 4-to-2 win over the Barger King team. Wes Jaska, our team manager this season, hurled a 3-hitter, walked none and struck out 11 batters. Connie Brennan was his battery mate behind home plate. Leading hitters were Lawrence Honza with a , home run and a single, Connie Brennan with a double and a single, Wes Jaska with a triple and Albin Wino) Vrana with a single. The team played a fine game afield by lending good support to our pitcher.

Thursday night, April 24, we played Safeway in our Thursday night league and we won by a score of 11-1. Lionel Schultz, pitched a no-hitter, walked two hatters and struck out 11. Connie Brennan caught the first two innings and Lawrence FIonza the remaining three. 'Leading • hitters for the game were: Ernie Genthner and Gary Altman with two hits, and Connie Brennan, Lawrence Hanza, Torn Warren, Jerry Manak, Lionel Schultz and Gary Hill all had one hit a p iece. Doug Hillis got on base via a base-on-balls We even had several methbers in the stands rooting for us and we were especially glad to see Willie and Carlyn Ondrusek at the game. Come out and 'see our games. We would like to have a season like we used to, by winning most of our games, large turnouts of fans and lots of fun in visiting together. May we count on you?

It was agreed that instead of penalizing the contestant to use a stop clock and stop the contestant when he or she uses up the allotted time.

In Proposal 4 the essay shall be 500 words or less in length, and the total cost for all categories is not to exceed $100.00. This was adopted.

It was agreed to allow the State Youth Director to attend the 1970 Longhorn Recreational Laboratory.

It was agreed to allow meals not to exceed $5.00 per day, plus lodging, to SYD Janousek when on official errands for the Society.

Bill Barnes with the Steck Company presented a calendar for 1970 at the price of $3,890.40, plus postage for 12,000 calendars. It was decided to order 12,000 calendars with the ,architect's rendering of our home office building on it.

President Morris reported that he attended the meeting of the District Youth Directors when it was held at the Supreme Lodge.

President Morris reported that the convention allowed 15c per adult member to the districts for the District Youth Fund, and that this mandate, through error, did not get into the bylaws. The by-laws provide for a payment of 5c per member. It was agreed to accept the mandate of the convention, as set forth in our convention proceedings.

President Morris pointed out that our by-laws Article 4 (a) 1 provides from 20 to 200 members over 16 years of age entitle a lodge to one delegate, but that the convention adopted the some by-laws as in the 1964 by-laws, that is, 20 to 100 members for one delegate.

It was agreed to proceed in accordance with the mandate of the proceedings of the convention, since the bylaw committee made an error.

VESTNfIK President Morris requested that we designate the La Grange State Bank as a depository for the SPJST, and it was so agreed.

It was agreed to allow lodging costs and $5.00 for meals per day to all Supreme Lodge members and spouses and the Honorary President and spouse when they go on official business for the Society within the State of Texas.

President Morris called the session to order at 8:45 a. m. President Morris announced that all members of the Supreme Lodge would meet at the new site of the home office for newsreel coverage for TV which will be shown on Wednesday, April 16, on KCEN-TV. President Morris read a letter from the Press Committee requesting the leasing of the office space for the editor. It was decided to postpone the leasing of the office for the Editor of the Vestnik.

President Morris reported on the condition of Mrs. Holtman, an employee of the Supreme Lodge office, who was hurt in a car wreck.

A Resolution of Sympathy in the death of Mrs. Marie Kacir, mother of Attorney August Kacir, was passed.

Vice-President Hajny referred to his written report and elaborated on it, Vice-President Hejny reported that the commissions to the district organizers were reduced and requested that higher overriding- commissions he paid to the district organizers on new business written by new organizers. Postponed till later date.

After considerable discussion, it was decided to employ full-time organizers, directly under the supervision of the Supreme Lodge, and make a report on same to all members of the Supreme Lodge.

Vice-President Hejny reported that we employed the computer to get the number of adult members in each district, but due to errors there was a great difference in the number of juvenile members compared to 1968.

It was agreed to disburse the youth fund and district per capita fund on the same basis as in 1968.

Vice-President Hejny inquired about paying dividends on single-premium policies which were in force less than 5 years. It was agreed to consult the actuary.

It was decided to purchase a new model projector for the use of the district organizers in their training clas-

ses.

Secretary Urbanovsky read a letter from the Cechoslovak Publishing Company, ratifying their agreement to print the Vestnik for an increase of 15% over the 1968 rate but that the agreement is valid only through 1969.

Secretary Urbanovsky read a letter from the National Sokol, inviting all the members of SPJST to the Slet in Chicago from June 26-29, 1969.

Secretary Urbanovsky read three letters from the Southern District Sokol thanking the SPJST for the annual contribution of $1,000.00.

Secretary Urbanovsky read a letter from the Heights Little League in Houston, thanking us for the $25.00 contribution.

The interest rate was brought up.

After considerable discussion, it was decided to set the interest rate at 7% to members of the SPJST on homes and farms for their own use, effective April 10, 1969.

Due to shortage of funds, It was decided to decline applications on apartments, housing projects, motels, funeral homes, nursing or rest homes, warehouses, churches, subdivisions and development property.

Financial-Secretary Zabcik referred to his written report and commented that the refund of reinsurance premiums amounted to $7,607.27; that our net interest yield was 4.'78%, and our slovency stands at 121.6%, andthat the net gain from operations was $52,492.70.

He reported that we have about $459,000.00 in the Mortuary Fund but also reported that about $200,000,00 of that will be paid immediately for the purchase of the home office property.

He further reported that the dividend checks are in the process of being issued by the Austin Computer Service.

He reported that as of last week there were 10,364 copies of the Vestnik sent to our memebers.

Financial-Secretary Zabcik reported that all lodges were in good condition with very few delinquencies.

Treasurer Mikeska referred to the list of delinquent loans which he prepared.

Treasurer Mikeska suggested that the charge for the partial releases should

12 be revised since the present price of $35.00 does not cover the expense. it was agreed to fix a maximum of $75.00 for partial releases, with charges sufficient to cover expenses.

Treasurer Mikeska reported on the vacant space in the home office.

Charles Voelter, partner of the firm of Logsdon & Voelter, architects, presented an architectural drawing and plans of the proposed home office building, and explained all details of the plan.

It was agreed to accept the concept of the architectural drawing of the home office building.

Attorney Kacir checked with the directors on pending loans.

Elbert Aldrich appeared before the board and reported what has been accomplished in connection with the purchase of the home office building and presented a statement showing that the 8 pieces of property cost a total of $210,250.00.

It was agreed to have the owners of the home office property cancel their insurance after the title is obtained by the SPJST, and to apply for new insurance to cover the improvements.

President Morris presented a request for advertising in the Sokol Slet program brochure of the American Sokol, and the Texas Sokol Southern District.

It was decided to take a full page in the Southern District Sokol convention program at a cost of $40.00.

It was agreed to hold a special meeting for the purpose , 'of final approval of the architect's plan, and the members of the Supreme Lodge to be notified a week in advance.

President Morris reported on the meeting in La Grange, which he and Bro. Hejny called for the purpose of getting the lodges in the La Grange area interested in merging and forming an active lodge in the La Grange area. He reported that the idea was accepted favorably, and that it appears that something may be worked out.

President Morris asked all the board members to give the local lodges all the help they can, and if at all possible to attend all SPJST functions in their districts. He stated that by the Supreme Lodge taking the initiative and letting the members know what we are doing, we will incur the respect and cooperation of the membership. He stressed the great value of good com-

VEBTNfK munication — among the members of the Supreme Lodge and between the Supreme Lodge and the membership.

This will build confidence in the leadership and earn the members' respect.

Director Kubena saiu that this meeting was quite interesting and he enjoyed it very much. He stated that if we don't pull our punches and go ahead and not be afraid to express our opinion that we will gain more respect. He complimented President Morris and Treasurer Mikeska on a job well done and commented on the harmony in the Supreme Lodge.

Director Sralla commented on the proposed home office building, and he said that he liked the plan very much.

He stated that he enjoyed the meeting and that he enjoys and appreciates the monthly reports from the president and also complimented Treasurer Mikeska on his report.

Director Vitek enjoyed the meeting.

He suggested that the fall meeting be called for two full days. He invited all the members of the Supreme Lodge to the District 11 meeting on April 20, at Holland.

Director Koliha complimented President Morris on the way he conducted the meeting and stated that he enjoyed the president's and treasurer's reports. He invited all members to the District VII meeting at Floresville next Sunday. Director Broz invited all the members to the District IV meeting at Lubbock on April 27. He stated that we have accomplished much at this meeting. He stated that he enjoys receiving the reports from President Morris and also complimented Treasurer Mikeska on his quarterly reports.

Director Hanka, expressed pleasure over this meeting and stated that we will accomplish much if we all speak our ideas. He further stated that if we keep working in harmony and the minority work with the majority in a democratic way, we can't help but progress.

Director Hanka also brought up the October meeting and it was decided by common consent that the meeting would be held Wednesday and Thursday for two full days.

Director Hanka invited all who are able to come to the youth meeting in Needville on April 20.

Director Hanka reported that the property for the new rest home at Needville has been purchased.

He jokingly stated that District V has the "liveliest" meetings in the state.

Wednesday, April 30, 1969 Director Hanka further stated that we should keep reminding the people that the SPJST was organized by Czech-Texans.

Director Hanka reported that during the week of June 11, 1972, the Rotary International will hold a convention in Houston and that practically all hotels are booked, and further, that there is a possibility of an opening in the Rice Hotel for the week of June 18, and that the week of June 25th was available.

Director Hanka was instructed to reserve the week of June 18th as first choice, June 25th as second choice, and June 4th as third choice.

It was suggested that Director Hanka call the Supreme Lodge officers when he arranges a meeting with the hotel to finalize the reservation: Director Pokladnik stated that in all sincerity he wants to compliment all of the officers of the Supreme Lodge for a job well done and he further stated that the future looks good and he was delighted with the progress made so far and that he enjoyed the meeting.

President Morris asked if there was anything further to bring up before the board. Since there was no response he wished them all a safe trip home.

Dear Members, Sorry, I missed the meeting at my own lodge. I was called to some other SPJST duties. I will try to make the next meeting.

Some of you have asked me, "Why didn't you receive a certificate or satisfactoriiy completing courses in Human and Leadership Development?" There is only one reason, and wish it had been answered by our State Youth Director when he put this in the Vestnik (April 16 issue).

The reason is I left for home Friday afternoon, instead of Saturday morning. However, there were no classes that Friday afternoon, so I feel like I didn't miss anything, and too, I had a way home that Friday where otherwise I more than likely would have had to come home by bus that Saturday. That's my only answer. Furthermore, I didn't know we were going to be awarded with these certificates They were not handed out last year and I stayed there until Saturday morning, where some of ouh main leaders left Friday.

Hope all of you are thinking about the YAD. Get your talent, royalty, and craft ready in plenty of time. The time and place will be announced a little later on. Watch your Vestnik.

Don't forget about our camp — June 23 to 26.

I enjoyed the District program. Sorry more of our kiddos couldn't come due to some other activities. Thank you each and everyone.

Dear Members, The youth members have just about ,made a lazy writer out of me. They have done such a thorough job of reporting our lodge happenings that there just isn't much for me to add.

Mrs. Balusek and myself put our heads together and worked out a program that included about 70 children, believe it or not, and as good troupers as they are, they all came through with flying colors and presented an entertaining program, I thought, as I enjoyed watching it myself.

By the time this is in print our District II meeting will be over and at this time I am looking forward to seeing all our friends at Holland. We hope to present a shorter version of the Hillbilly wedding. Our Beseda dancers have been invited to dance at the Bend of the River on this same Saturday. The cultural activity center here in Temple has invited us. We will participate early in the program so that we can beeline it to Holland for the district meeting and not miss too much of the activities there.

Don't forget our next meeting will be May 2 (Friday night) with a covered dish supper beginning at 7 p.m. followed by a meeting at 8 p.m.

The juniors and teens will select their officers for the year June 1, 1969 to June 1, 1970. We will also have a tea honoring our high school graduates. See all of you then.

Dear Readers: Last week we were very happy to see that the Robstown Record, our weekly newspaper, printed an article and the picture of the local youth club member who was lucky enough , to be chosen the winner in the State Essay Contest, David Hrncir. The announcement'was made at the Dist. VII spring meeting in Floresville by our Society's president, Bro. Nick Morris, who presented David with a check. The article gave David and our local youth club a nice bit of recognition, which helps to acquaint people in our area with the activities of the SPJST. As a sideline, I might add that the contest deadline slipped up on all of us and David hurriedly finished his essay and got it ,mailed 15 minutes before the deadline. This is not the ideal way to enter, but he had luck on his side because the next day, when he submitted the same essay as an English project, he received an A on it at school. He used the prize money as a down payment on a "wet-suit," which is a rubber suit used when scuba-diving in cold water.

Our older boys have organized diving club under the leadership of Mr. Dick Germer, The project started throughout the p ast year, the boys have met monthly and have many plans for diving trips now that warmer weather has arrived. Two trips to Port Aransas were made this month by the club.

The trip to Floresville by youth club bus was q uite enjoyable. Over 30 took the ride and several commented how comfortable the bus was and how much fun the adults had in the company of the youth of our lod ge. They may have seemed a bit noisy to some, but everyone had a lovel y time throughout the day and we wish to thank Lodge No. 107 for being such gracious hosts for the district meeting.

skating trip to Corpus Christi on May 17. This will be our regular meeting, and the business will be conducted on the bus promptly at 2 p.m. at the school parking lot. We plan to return at 6.

A contest to find a suitable name for our bus was held this month. The winning name was selected by area youth leaders and will be announced soon. Watch for it!

LODGE NO. 142, HOUSTON Dear Readers, The District V had their Youth Fair April 20 at Needville and everyone that attended had a good time especially when it came to the sponge throw I got a few wet ones thrown at me, but it was fun. I want to thank all the mothers from our lodge who donated cakes. Fraternally, Rosie Tumis Youth Leader -SPJ STCOTTONWOOD LODGE NO. 6 Dear Members and Friends, This is a reminder to everyone that our next meeting will be held on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p. m. Our youth clubs plan to honor all mothers who are present at this meeting. The youth have also provided some extra door prizes just for the mothers. These youngsters have been working real hard the past few weeks to try to show their appreciation for what mother has done for them. This will be sort of an early Mother's Day, so you mothers don't forget. We don't want to disappoint the youngsters.

We realize that another important function is being held in the area on the same day and that many of you are planning to attend. Our youth group and their leaders and families plan to attend this function after our meeting and business is over with.

At this next club meeting the youngsters will have to select who they want to represent them and the lodge at the District III Youth Achievement Day in the Royalty Contest. The teen club will select the prince and princess while the junior club will select the duke and duchess. This year, the Youth Achievement Day will be held close to home, so I expect a great number of the youngsters to enter the various contests involving posters, craft, and talent. Those youngsters who are planning to enter one or more of the contests must fill out an entry blank first. We will have these available for you at the next meeting on May 4th and on our Wednesday night worknights. This year the Youth Achievement Day will be held on Sunday, June 29th at Linden Hall in Elm Mott. Please remember that we must have the entry blanks to turn in 20 clays before the contests are held.

We'll look forward to seeing all you mothers at the next meeting, and if you know of some other mothers who would like to attend, please invite them for I am sure that the youngsters will be glad to see them. For the youngsters, don't forget to fill in the entry blanks and to have in mind a person for the royalty contest at the next meeting on May 4th, and also try to make our worknight on Wednesday, April 30th from 8 to 10 p. m.

We will start at 7 with a covered dish supper, followed by a graduation tea for our youth club graduates. Immediately after this, about 8 p. in. our meeting will start.

So all of you members, keep this in mind and come Friday night.

At this meeting we will also have our election of officers for both the teens and juniors, so all of you keep this in mind. If you want an office and think you are qualified let someone know so yott can be nominated.

Campaigning is good and we wholeheartedly encourage it. It shows you are interested as an individual.

We are having a terrible time getting a youth leader. Mrs. Balusek was elected district youth director for District II so now we do not have a youth leader. They say 3 times is a charm so maybe the third one will .stay with us for the next 10 years — we hope.

I will help anyone that relieves me of my duties with all the help that I can give them and they may need.

I want to thank everyone that came out to Holland and participated In the program for District II. It was quite a lengthy afternoon but I'm sure the adults had a lot of business to tend to. I know that some of the youngsters thought they would like to be fishing or some other place but I think it was well worth the effort from all the wonderful comments I heard about our Hillbilly Wedding. I would especially like to thank all the parents that helped in anyway at all in putting this production over.

Wednesday, April 30, 1969 LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, It's nice to be able to see again after breaking my glasses and wearing dark glasses for a week.

One more reminder that May 4 is our prinpess ball, and also the first Sunday of the month is our meeting day. So we will have our meeting at 2 p.m., instead of 3 p.m. Don't forget that is also our day to pick out our officers for the year. Be thinking of who you want for what office and will she or he work for our club and not sit back and wait for the other fellow to do the job.

Remember summer vacation is around the corner and so is camp.

Have you been doing your part so you can go? We will also have crafts this summer. I will give you more details a little later.

Some of you have been asking about when the pool will open and I'll try to find out for my next letter.

We do have crafts in the youth room every Thursday night.

Fraternally, Binnie Matejka (13) —SPJST-LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Readers, Since April has passed us by already it might be well to summarize the teen club of Lodge 84's activities for that month.

The smorgasbord, which the teen club sponsored on April 12, was very well attended (even though the weather was horrible that day) and was very successful. I would like to thank all those who gave so much of their time and effort to this project, helping it to be such a success.

Our monthly meeting on April 20 yielded no results in the planning of another activity. Come on teens. our last one was in December -- don't you care or don't you want any more activities?

Many new members have recently joined the teen club' the two newest being Patrick Zastopil and John Tomas° (social member). To all of these new members I would like to extend a very hearty welcome.

I'd also like to thank Mr. Sharp for his excellent speech on "The Youth of Today Are The Leaders of Tomorrow," which was an excellent prelude to his talk about our upcoming elections.

Thank you for showing us that there is something for us to hope for in the future.

The big activity of the year in our club is the race for king and queen of the lodge. So far.this year we have only two candidates -- one boy and one girl -- for the titles. What is a race when there is no one to run against? It's hard work (I know, because I've done it) but you can't ex-. pect to always receive benefits and have fun in the club without being willing to work to help keep it going.

The profits from this activity not only provide us with a trip to a dude ranch, but they also provide the financial backing for the other activities during the year that make us a CLUB. So teens of Lodge 84, let's get going time is running out!

15 party on April 5th. The older youth were having fun roller skating, while the younger youth were having fun playing games and hunting Easter eggs. We had an Easter contest; the winners in the age 11-12 group were: 1st — Cindy Mandak, 2nd — Susan Reznik, and 3rd — David Becan. Age group 8-10: 1st — Christian Mandak, 2nd — Randy Petr, and 3rd — Debbie Becan. Ages 6-7: 1st — David Reznik, and 2nd — Camille Mandak. In the preschool age group were: 1st — Barbara Kopecky, 2nd — Carol Liska, 3rd — Scott Bickle, and 4th — Jackie Becan.

Everyone who came had lots of fun.

Then on April 20, the youth club had its meeting. At our meeting we had a guest speaker, Mr. Sharp. He told us how we should vote for our new officers at the May 18 .meeting. After the meeting we had craft. We made flowers and cards for Mother's Day. See you at the next meeting.

The committees gave their reports and our youth leader told us about all the coming events. After the meeting, games like ping-gong and pool were enjoyed. Refreshments of cookies and punch were served. Our next meeting will be May 17, and we will go skating.

The meeting was called to order and prayer was said and, as us u a 1, we all practically gulped our sandWiches down. Talk about a group of starved kids . . . we were!

After eating, and cleaning-up, we followed our regular procedure of saying the pledge to the, flag, saying the SPJST motto and the SPJST song. But when it was time to sing for those who have April birthdays, there were none.

This meeting was out of the ordinary in more ways than one because this time we had two new visitors.

They were Carol Williams, and Brenda Rucker. Most of us had known Carol from school, but Brenda has to wait a year or so before she can go to school, so to most of us, she was new. Later, after discussing business items such as our hayride, etc., we discussed our District VI spring meeting in Sweet Home, and camp at Bastrop and Easter. And, of course at the- mention of

STNfK camp we all plunged into conversation, trying to explain about the fun to those who had never been there.

We later made Easter arrangements for our homes, and the meeting was adjourned and we departed for home.

LODGE 88, 'HOUSTON Dear Friends, We had an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday in the afternoon. It was well attended. Many eggs were found and Cheri Murray was the grandprize winner. She won herself a stuffed animal.

On Sunday, April 20 the youth club of our lodge had Youth Fair at Needville. There was lost of good food for all, and lots of fun too! There were booths and fun races. Hey, don't forget to sell your cook books. The contest closes on May 31 — Top winner will get a cash award.

May 4th is the Princess Ball — Get out and sell those tickets on the console stereo.

Jeanette Smith Dorothy Gerlich Matilda Hanus Resolution Corn., Lodge 66 EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 48 of Beyersville in behalf of our lodge express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, ELO ROITHNER, who Passed away April 18, 1969 in a Galveston hospital. He was born March 20, 1907 in Williamson County and was a farmer near Round Rock.

Mr. Roithner was a member of Immanuel 'Lutheran Church of Pflugervill and the SPJST Lodge of Beyersville.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dora Roithner; a daughter, Janice of Round Rock; a son, Ronald, also of Round Rock, and three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Winters and Mrs. Annie Dosky of Taylor and Mrs. Sehna Parker of Pasadena, Texas.

Funeral services were held April 20, 1969 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pflugerville with the Rev. Donal Lukemeyer officiating. Burial was in the Capital Memorial Garden with the Condra Funeral Home of Taylor in charge of arrangements.

TORNADO STRIKES PAWNEE AREA. A tornado dipped down at several places just to the north of Pawnee on Thursday morning doing a great al.,m(mt of damage to buildings and crops. There seemed to be more than one funnel in the storm, which blew in at 6:30 a.m. with tornadic force winds Lso.a nail, and a small amount, of rain.

Huge trees were blown down. Sema were uprooted, while others were split apart and twisted. Some roads were impa c sabie with trees strewn across the right of way.

Following on eastward toward the Monteolo area it was reported that :hailstones were a foot and a half deep in places. Sheetiron from the barn roofs was scattered in the fields. One road was so littered with fallen trees it looked as if the tornado followed the fence line, taking all the trees in its path.

The storm. went on toward Green Choate and Runge causing damage from high winds and hail.

An estimate of the loss has not been made, but it would certainly be in the thousands of dollars. A number of farmers suffered crop loss, and still others lost buildings and other property. (From an article in the Kenedy Advance of April 24, sent in by Bro. Jos. Koliha, Jr. —Editor).
