FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK More than 135 million Americans now have some form of life insurance protection. This means the lives of two out of every three men, women and children in the United States are insured, according to the Institute of Life Insurance. The 135 million include all persons covered by individual and group plans with private insurance organizations. as well as those under government life insurance programs. Legal reserve life insurance companies provide the protection for more than 130 million of those insured. While most families have at least some life insurance protection, statistics indicate that many could well have more than they now own. The average amount in force today would cover only about TWO YEARS of disposable income per family. At the beginning of this year, the average life insurance protection per family was an estimated $18,600. Many experts in financial planning advise that families generally need at least enough life insurance to cover four or five years of income. Although the nation's protective

The average amount of life insurance per family has more than doubled the past decade. During the same period, disposable income per family climbed about 60 per cent. By far the largest share of family life insurance protection is on the husband. Many families carry at least some insurance on the wife, who makes an important economic contribution

even when she does not earn income. Coverage also often includes at least moderate amounts on the children, particularly with the wider use of family plan policies. • • Now that your editor has written to you about insurance, he wishes to write to our membership about two things pertinent at the present time. First, he attended the meeting of the Supreme Lodge, Thursday, April 10 for the afternoon session. He was fortunate to see the proposed architectural plans for the new Supreme Lodge Building in Temple. Further information will be forthcoming from the proper sources in the near future. Your editor feels that the membership will tie pleased with the decisions, made previously. He appreciated the interest of all of the officers and directors in behalf of the benefit of the SPJST. Second, in this issue, you will find a picture of a 60-passenger bus purchased by the 45 member Youth Club of Lodge 117, Robstown, for their activities, which they have earned by their diligent effort to provide transportation to various places they desire to attend.
