Lodge 84 had a wonderful program and good attendance even though we had inclement weather. Brother Sid Pokladnik took the baton and conducted approximately 35 musicians in some selections so Well executed that it brought our Eupreme Lodge President Nick:Morris to request the same group perforM on the program at the opening of the new SPJST Supreme Lodge Building. It was very inlcresting and, as usual, you learn new Utc:as. It boils down to the statement lilat Brother Nick Morris made in the fall meeting at Lodge Stefanik 142 of District V: "Listen to all of the id of all mem7 bers. What May sound far fetched to Some of us, may have a lot of common sense in what they present."

The District III meeting was very constructive and quite an amount of progress was accomplished. Brother Sebetka led the meeting onward as did Brother Matcek in District V. Remember, some of these meeting,i may sound drawn out, however, the "Declaration of Independence was not written in a few moments, either!"

Wednesday, April 2, 1989 In one of my Czech editorials not so long ago, I mentioned the fact that many people request a donation to some worthy cause or their choice of charity instead of flowers at the fu'neral. I notice that the family of President lEisenhower has requested the same, because that is what he would have desired.

One of the things that I will always remember about him was a statement he once made. He said that he once asked one of his superiors what %t takes to make a good staff officer, since the job is a rather trying one, and the answer was: "Disarm anything that tends to irritate, hurt or insult you with a ready grin and it will not hurt nearly as much." I feel that he practiced that a large amount of the time. Most of the time that he was Commanding General in the European theater, when he came upon a soldier on duty or working or a soldier in a fox bole, he would put his right hand in his pocket so that the soldier would not have to salute, was a story told to me a number of times in Germany. House Speaker John McCormack has just said: "What impressed me most was that he was always Dwight D. Eisenhower, the man, who was in love with all of his fellow mankind."

• The Date of Easter for the early Christian church was determined by the Jewish festival of the Passover, which was set by the lunar calendar then in use. Even here there seems to have been some disagreement, since the Passover was observed by Jesus and his disciples on Thursday and by the priests on Friday. At any rate there was an early argument among Christians, with one group favoring a strict adherence to the Passover date and another favoring observance on Sunday with a movable date.

• • The Name of Easter derives from the old German Oster, a feast dedicated to Eostre, the pagan goddess of spring.

The egg as a symbol of new life goes far back into antiquity. The rabbit joins the festivities through his relative the hare, associated by the Egyptians with the beginning of life. And the custom of wearing new clothes seems to also be of ancient beginning.

Possibly because of these associations, the Puritan churches did not encourage Eastei• festivities; and its universal observance in the United States did not come until the Civil War when it

Supreme Lodge Secretary Brother R. A. Urbanovsky was confined to Scott and White Hospital in Temple for a few days and is now at home.

• • We have just received news that -Sister Frances Olexa, chairman of the Publication Committee, was injured in an auto accident and has some broken ribs and is in Heights Hospital.

• • Mrs. Virgil (Marcella) Holtman, Supreme Lodge employee, was critically injured in a one-car accident recently at Seaton, east of Temple. She is still in the intensive care ward at Kings Daughters Hospital in Temple. The Holtmans live on Route 4, Temple.

They are members of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Mikulas of Temple are the proud parents of a baby boy, who arrived March 24. His name is Wade Alan, He was welcomed home by a sister, Donna, Jerry is employed at the Supreme Lodge office in Temple.

• • A number of our district youth directors and lodge youth leaders attended the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory near Glen Rose last week. SYD Janousek also attended.

• • Bro. Anton Navratil, age 88, passed away March 14, 1969, in Dallas. He was a member of Lodge 66 and was buried in Restland Memorial Park, Dallas.

• Bro. Raymond Palmquist, age 59, died March 22, 1969, in Temple. He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Temple.

Bro. Palmquist was a member of Lodge 87.

Bro. Louis Macha, age 73, departed March 4, 1969, in Kerrville. He was

3 a member of Lodge 57 and was laid to rest in Woodmen of the World Cemetery at Gonzales.

• • Bro. Emil K. Brabina, age 47, died February 21, 1969, in Dallas. Interment was in Myrtle Cemetery, Ennis.

He was a member of Lodge 130.

• • Sister Antonia Opravil, age 84, passed away March 2, 1969, in Victoria. She was a member of Lodge 97.

Bro. Lonnie E. Mikeska, age 35, died March 13, 1969, in Rosenberg, He was buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Rosenberg, and was a member of Lodge 81.

• • Bro. Raymond Martinec, age 46 died March 13, 1969, in San Angelo. He was a member of Lodge 49.

Bro. Vladimir Straznicky, age 71, passed away March 18, 1969 in Rosenberg. He was a member of Lodge 81, and was laid to his eternal rest in the Greenlawn Memorial Park at Rosenbe eg.

• • Mr. Simon Rokusek passed away to his eternal rest at the age of 94 in Omaha, Nebr., March 27. He was the father of Sister Jos. F. (Marie) Holasek of West. Sister Holasek flew to Omaha and Brother Jos. F. Holasek joined her there to attend the funeral.

Features AWARDED $4,009 SCHOLARSHIP W, T. Hawthorne, principal of Forest Park High School, announced recently that Thomas W. Jurik, a graduating senior, has been awarded a Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation scholarship.

The grant entitles Jurik financial aid up to $1,000 per year during four years of college beginning in September.

Young Jurik, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie J. Jurik, of Beaumont, will attend the University of Texas. In addition to the scholarship grant, he received an all expense paid trip to San Antonio and $100 in cash.

Jurik's selection, according to Piper 'officials was due to his superior scholastic ability, strength of character and ifinancial need. According to Hawthorne, young Jurik has distinguished himself in many academic activities during his four years at Forest Park High. He is a member of the National Honor ,Society, the Mathematics Club which is known as Mu Alpha Theta and was a delegate last August to the

first national convention of the Mu Alpha Theta in San Antonio.

He has been in the school band fur four years, the orchestra during his senior year and was also named to the All-Region Orchestra recently. He is also a finalist in National Merit Scholarship program, and according to Hawthorne, may be named a scholarship winner for that group when the awards are announced in April.

He is a member of the German Club, on the Stylus staff (literary ma gazine), the track and cross-country team and is a Life Scout. He is also past president of Explorer Post No. 80.

Nancy Kveton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kveton, Lorenzo, Texas, has been notified that she has passed the requirements for the State Homemaker Degree, the highest achievement that can be awarded in Future Homemakers of America.

Some of the requirements for qualifying for this degree are that a girl must have satisfactorily completed four semesters of homemaking instruction; she must have established goals to suit her personal needs, interests, and abilities and follow a plan for the wise use of her resources to achieve these goals; she must have participated in FHA work' on the local, area, and state levels; and she must show leadership qualities and maintain a high grade level, not only in homemaking

She will be awarded her degree in a ceremony at the State FHA meeting in Dallas May 2.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members.

Lodge 84's junior youth are having their Easter egg hunt and skating party Saturday, April 5. East Dallas Christian Church, Peak and Junius, is the location to meet from 2 to' 5 p.m.

Whether you are an active youth member or not the bunny is looking forward to seeing you. Don't forget your decorated egg using only the items listed for you at the last Meeting. Oh, boy — won't we have fun!

Don't overlook the teenagers the following Saturday, April 12 and their big, big dinner. Isn't there someone you promised to call the next time a feast was being prepared? It's 75c for adults and 50c for children under 12.

Be prepared for a long line starting at 6:3-0 p.m. I hope each teenager has made up their mind as to what meat dish they are bringing to share with the guests and how about the members who have no teenagers — are you going to prepare any new side dish that will delight everyone present. Plan to stay a little while and enjoy a few

games Dress casual and relax with your friends, who are sure to be here.

Speaking of casual dress — well, lately have you noticed how the men at our lodge are conforming to the latest styles? I think it all started when Bro. Leonard Baleja arrived at a dance with a white turtle-neck shirt, and his best dress suit — and remember when Bro. David Andreason sported the first long sideburns? Well, since then there is no stopping. Time was when you could listen to them discuss baseball, football or whatever sport interested you, but did you notice before our last meeting how several of them discussed their hair stylist — and don't yell at your children if you can't find your eyebrow pencil, the fellows use it to make their sideburns show up . .. I think.

Can these gentlemen over thirty he the same ones who refused to wear pink and black together just a few years ago?

LODGE NO. 77, BOMARTON Lear Readers, It has been a long time since I have written to the Vestnik. I have a problem with my nieces and nephews, but I have finally found time to write about our meeting We had our regular meeting on Sunday, March 23.

The meeting was conducted by the vice-president. The smaller group practiced their skit for the District 4 spring meeting in Lubbock. Now I most go and read my library book for a book report.

NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members, I was told to write that we would have a special guest to initiate new 'members at Our April 14th lodge meeting but to keep you guessing for awhile who this would be! Well, now you know, so I just want to remind you not to miss this chance to be initiated by our President Nick A. Morris.

Not many get the privilege of being initiated by the President of the Supreme Lodge! Organizers, please call the members you have signed up, and all you members, call anyone you know who has not been initiated. Let's make this the greatest initiation Lodge 88 ever had!

czECD CLASSES ITN THE SUMMER SEMESTER AT TEXAS A&M The Texas A&M University will teach a Czech language course in the first semester from. June 3 to July 11, which will be a special course for those students who do not wish to study through the entire summer.

The course is called "Beginner's Czech 127-128" and the students will receive the same credit (six credit hours) for this course as they would for any other foreign language course.

This course will last only six weeks and students will stay in class three hours a day, five clays a. week. It will be required that they attend the laboratory regularly at least three hours every day. All, lessons and parts (including songs) will be on magnetic tapes and students will have the opportunity to listen to these tapes at any time that they require additional assistance with grammer or pronunciation. These magnetic tapes were prepared by Czechs so that only pure and clear Czech will be heard.

Students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the university during the summer and, at the same time, to learn to speak and read correct Czech before the fall season begins. We do not know of any other university where you can acquire the same experience. The registration for this course will be June 2, however, please let us know of your interest at the earliest possible time.

LODGE NO. 146, GAINESTON Dear Readers, Once again I have accepted the task of reporting for our lodge, and I must say that I do enjoy writing to our weekly Vestnik.

Our lodge has been a bit slack in the line of entertainment and get-togethers lately, but with some effort put forth we are again heading forward.

Our meetings have been held in the Eagles' Hall since the first or the year, which should make it more convenient for our members to attend.

On Saturday, April 19 we are sponsoring a dance at the Eagles' Hall, 1906 Post Office Street, from 8 to 12 p.m., to the music of Wilbur Heinsohn and his seven-piece orchestra from . Houston, who comes forth with all types of oldtime and modern music. Admission will be 99c per person.

We are urging all members to do their best in advertising and talking-up the dance, so we will have a nice large crowd. There is plenty of parking space adjacent to the hail which should be an encouragement.

Our April meeting will be held on April 13, at 2 p.m. in the Eagles' Hall.

Due to Easter falling on the 1st Sunday in April, our regular meeting date, we have changed the date. I do hope the attendance is increased so as to complete plans for the April 19 dance.

We plan to serve sandwiches and potato chips at the dance, and, so, will our kind and generous ladies please make an extra batch? In case you do not have time to make the sandwiches due to working late, call Sister Georgia Reran at SR 4-1714 or yours truly at SO 2-7714 and we will see that they are made and delivered to the hall.

We invite guests and members from other lodges to come and join us, and to spend a "dancing" evening with us.

SP.IST REST HOME Our -new wing to the Home that the 20th Convention in Dallas made possible is- progressing . rather satisfactorily even in all of this rainy and cold weather which. we have had for some time. The Hahn Construction Co., of Aristin is building the wing and is doing its utmost to have it completed by June 1-, for they see how urgently we need By that date we will have to have the furnishings for the rooms and for which we still do not have all the money we will need, however, we are depending very sincerely on our fraternal brothers and sisters of our SPJST for the needed aid. Our hearts really grow warm with pride when we hear from our administrator, Bro. Gaida, that we already have seven good-hearted and fraternal donors who are going to furnish seven of the rooms 'in the new wing, where their desired information will be on plaques on the doors never to be forgotten, that they either donated this from the

fraternalism in their hearts or in the memory of someone in remembrance after they had gone to thOir eternal rest. No person can really understand and appreciate what our SPJST Home does for our dear elderly members who are either confined to bed or to a wheel chair or are blind where hey are taken care of with such careful, brotherly and sisterly and devoted attention.

I for one , will not allow this opportunity to pass, although I do not have such abundant resources, and I wish to leave something in memory of what this iH1)JS 11.1 Home did for my wife, Mary Schefcak, in her last days when she was taken care of so considerately and benevolently until at last she left me for her rest; eternally. With this wish to acknowledge this and also leave notice i value what is being done here , very sincerely. My neighbor, Bro. Frank Hilm, living in the room next to me who has his wife here in the hospital wing, agrees with me that such faithful care would be very hard to obtain for his wife as is available hei1e and also is joining that little fraternal group and is furnishing one room for the sum of $376.15, for which all of us here thank him a thousandfold.

Our Rest Home has many previous donors, about whom I will write at some later date. Right now, I wish to mention one here in Taylor, who has an above-average love for our older people here at the Rest Home. He is none other than Bro. Stanley R. In comparison to laSt year at this time, there are more closely competing contestants, so your activity in the weeks ahead will tell the tale. If you will recall, last year there were several who missed out on top honors just by a few activities. Accumulation of points is especially important for the teenagers because of the prized scholarship award - to begin next year based on points accumulated over the past three years. Thereafter, the scholarship will be given annually on the same basis.

LODGE 135, ENNIS Dear Readers, On Mar. 16, Cooper Ave. in Loans was crowded with youth from our club.

We held our kite contest at this time.

The day turned out to be beautiful after the terrible rain storm we experienced the day before. We were also fortunate to have a paved street, no traffic due to a street of empty lots.

--The youth had so much fun in competition. We even had parents who were quite interested. One father, Brother Tommy Steele, had his kite dancing in the air. Quite humorous.

The judging was somewhat difficult.

We had several ties. Highest flying kites: Denise Patak and Louise Mikel.

Smallet kite: Linda Mikel. Largest kite (8 foot): Joel Hennig. Prettiest kite: Danny Bouska, Diane Bouska, Larry Valik. Best homemade kite: George Wensowitch, Steve Steele.

District III meeting held at Lodge 130 Dallas on March 23 was a wonderful experience and a well spent evening with all the members. This was actually my first district meeting to attend. I had the privilege of meeting several members who 1. read about so often in the Vestnik.

At this meeting I was nominated and elected as Sister Wilma Nesuda's assistant district youth director. Since Sister Wilma Nesuda had to leave early from the meeting, I did fill in for her part in the oath of office.

I want to recognize the youth who attended this meeting with me. Danny Bouska, Bobbie Moucka, Claudia Moueka, Marvin Patak and Denise Skrivanek. Also participating in the youth program were Bobbie Moucka, and Denise Skrivanek in a skit and Marvin Patak played his accordion. Thank you for your interest and time representing our youth club.

A juvenile delinquent is 2 child who breaks a law. Delinquency is an important problem for everyone because it is increasing faster than the population of our country. Youth under the age of eighteen commit at least fifty per cent of the major crimes in the -United States today.

The causes of juvenile delinquency are as complicated as life itself, but every case can be traced to a lack of adjustment between the child and society.

A juvenile delinquent shuts himself out of society and cuts off all chances of improving himself. Trying to hide

Wednesday, April 2, 1969 from his troubles, he begins to be a "floater," having nothing to do with other people. His self-centered world is hard, cruel, and unfriendly. His feelings for his fellow man become hardened. As time passes, his small mistakes become larger and are soon bigger and bigger crimes. The more he dislikes others, the more he feels that he has a right to do what he wishes, whether good or bad.

It is fine to be independent, but there are times when you cannot be entirely independent and you need others. No man can be an island.

When you are in groups, you begin to like others and others begin to like you. When this happens, you are close to others instead of being shunned or shut out. You are part of a group, n,A group that helps you understand others and feel as they feel. Members of groups or communities of people such as fraternal organizations, learn to be better and kinder to each other and work together. Fraternal societies, such as the SPJST, are next to the home and school in building character and encouraging love for our country among young people.

In the last twenty-five years the home and family life have become much less important to young and old alike. Many children are not taught moral values.

A fraternal organization encourages family participation in its activities.

When members of a family are working together to achieve certain goats, the gap between generations is narrowed and they are more closely bound together. In this same way members of a fraternal society are bound together as brothers and sisters in a much larger family. They learn brotherhood and respect for others.

Activities held by SPJST for its young people show there is a confideuce and trust in them for the future. When they attend summer camp. they must obey its rules. This teaches them respect for laws and regulations.

They learn the reasons for the rules.

Participating in contests teaches them not to give up and to keep on working toward a goal.

In the end, however, it will be each youth who must make up his own mind, whether - he will choose the cold, bleak world of crime and unhappiness, or whether he will take the path toward the warm world of brotherhood.

Our SPJST is lighting the way to guide us. We must â– meet the challenge. The future of our country depends on it.

Dear Readers, As you know , March is kite-flying time. Our youth leader gave us a kiteflying contest on Sunday, March 16. I have never seen so many different kinds of kites. There were prizes given for the biggest, ,smalles t , h ighest, and the prettiest.

My string broke and I had to run to Ye Ole' Inn to find my kite floating in their swimming pool. Anyway , I had my exercise for the day.

Dear Readers, On Saturday, March 22, we went to the :Howard Theatre in Taylor. About 15 members were there including Mrs. Pokorny, our youth leader, and Mrs. Tallas, the assistant. It was real exciting. After the movie we went to the Dairy Queen and bought either ice cream or a drink. I really enjoyed myself and I am sure everyone else did.

We have gotten about 5 new members in the last month and hope more will join.

Our candy project is doing real well and I hope everyone is selling as much as he can. We may even have to order some ,more!

Youth Achievement Day will be here soon! It will be held in Taylor at the SPJST hall on June 22. I hope to see a crowd there!

Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, 'April 13. The adult meeting will start at 2 p.m. and at 3:30 our meeting will begin. Hope to see everyone there!

Dear Readers, Our last meeting was held on March 16. We talked about the teenagers going bowling. We are planning to go to Six Flags in May or June.

We will make Easter baskets full of goodies fur the sick children. We also received tickets for the Czechoslovak movie whiji will be held on Tuesday, April 1.

The youth under 12 will go to Patricia Stanislav's farm. They will have a wiener roast and horseback riding.

On March 30 there will be an Easter ,egg hunt and a wiener roast. The youth are also asked to bring kites to

Dear Readers, Hi! The East Bernard youth club held its last meeting on March 2, in the East Bernard SPJST Hall. The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance. Old and new ,business was discussed. We practiced our skit for the District VI spring meeting to be held on March 30 at Sweet Home, ,starting'at 1:30 p.m. For refreshments we had soda water. The meeting was then adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held on April 13, the second Sunday in April.

Be sure and come.

erest RE FOUND HIS OWN CURE Hemophelia is one of the worst sicknesses. There can be a small wound and the person can bleed to death because bleeding is so hard to stop. A person afflicted with this affliction or disease must be in continuous contact with a doctor, and at the same time be very careful not to get injured in any case, because it could mean the end of his or her life.

Sometimes, it really is valuable to read every report in the newspapers and various publications. By overlookMg a certain article one might lose a great deal.

Not long ago, a New York daily paper brought a small article about how one unlucky person who had this affliction found his own cure. As a child, he loved peanuts and at various times, he did not even care to have anything else to eat. After a few years, he discovered that if he ate one-half pound of peanuts every day, he did not have to fear bleeding to death. He told his family doctor about this, and this doctor decided to try this on other patients. In a Brisbane, Australia hospital there was "trial" cure on a patient who suffered with heavy internal bleeding. After two days of eating peanuts, the bleeding stopped and the patient made a rapid recovery. One month after becoming well he was eat-

ing 1 pound of peanuts daily, and later cut down to one-half pound a day.

The result was somewhat astonishing . In the hospital laboratory, it was ascertained that peanuts possess a certain invigorating or bracing tonic which immediately is absorbed by the blood and causes the blood to coagulate even in cases where it would seem that almost any kind of help is useless.

An annual inspection is routinely required for all motor vehicles in Texas, but the human body doesn't get the same consideration.

More adults go along year after year without seeing a doctor unless they become ill or have an accident.

The Texas State Department of Health says most people fail to realize that if a regular inspection is important for a car, it is absolutely vital for the human machine.

You may have some early disease and not even know it. Unless this hidden condition is found and treated, chances are it will become more serious and more difficult to control.

A regular check-up by a doctor is a good opportunity to get sound medical advice on your needs, based on his professional evaluation of your stateof-health. You may need medical advice about the food you eat, the exercise you should take, and other habits which can help or hinder you in your search for good health.

Even if you are already under treatment, perhaps it has been too long since your last visit to the doctor.

Your condition may have changed for the better or worse.

Perhaps your regimen needs to be changed or your medicines — if you are taking any — need to be readjusted in doseage or kind. Not all medicines are to be taken indefinitely.

50 DROWN IN TEXAS WATERS Texas has had 50 drownings so far this year, according to figures from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Fourteen of these victims were boating for pleasure. Of these, six did not have Coast Guard approved life preservers on board for each person in the boat.

PERFECT SHOT REQUIRES PERFECT GRIP

By Johnny Guenther While all phases of delivery are important an incorrect grip can ruin what would otherwise be a perfect shot. Most pro bowlers insert their fingers into the ball first — to the proper depth — and then the thumb.

You'd be surprised how many beginners and "amateurs" do not have the proper grip. It's the fingers that impart the proper roll and that should be your primary concern. If the ball is drilled properly, you should be able to let the ball hang loosely at your side without squeezing. (See sketch 2).

The grip should be comfortable, with no significant strain on your fingers from over-reaching. The finger holes should fit snugly with the thumb hole slightly larger so the thumb will come out first and easily. .

GAME VIOLATIONS SHOW UPWAR.D TREND Game management officers of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department cleared 932 game, fish, and water safety violations during February, 1969, a 12 per cent increase over the 833 violations cleared during February, 1963.

The figure "conforms to the upward trend of law violations reported nationally," says J. B. Phillips, law enforcement coordinator for the Department.

Heading the list were hunting violations, with 508. Of these, 82 were for hunting at night, 65 for no hunting license, 47 for discharging a firearm on a public road, and 40 for trespassing to hunt.

There were 118 fishing violations, 109 fishing without a license.

Commercial fishing violations numbered 25, and water safety violations numbered 76.

Czechoslovak sports functionaries also enjoyed great popularity. Almost all of those who ran for election to various offices in international sports federations were elected. Thus, for instance, Dr. Bosak became a member of the Council of Federation of Light Athletics, B. Poula was elected vicepresident of the Weight Lifters Federation, J. Vevoda became one of the three top functionaries of the Volleyball Federation, etc.

Following the return home, members of the Czechoslvak Olympic team were received (just as prior to their departure) at the Castle of Praha where they met President Svoboda and other leading personalities. President Svoboda awarded Vera Casla yska-Odlozilova the Order of the Republic, and a number of other Czechoslovak sports representatives were given high awards.

A brief period of rest followed, but most of the popular sports figures are back at hard work. The successes of Czechoslovak sportsmen and sportswomen have not remained unnoticed abroad, and a number of invitations to foreign tours came. Women gymnasts are to visit Japan, the volleyball team will go to Uruguay, some or the light athletes to the USA, etc. A number of invitations also came to the Pospisil brothers who became world champions in this year's bicycle-ball championships in Kassel, West Germany.

All this is the best proof of the size of the contribution Czechoslovak sportsmen and sportswomen made to Czechoslovakia's good world reputation this year. They can look back on the year 1968 with justified pride.

Rockport — The fisherman eased over the side of his skiff into clear, waist-deep water. In one hand he held a six-foot rod complete with open face spinning reel. In the other was a small box of lures, mostly spoons with a few worm-jigs for good measure..

Thrusting these into an upper pocket he waded off across the flats. This fisherman was after redfish.

A man doesn't have to be an expert to catch redfish, but it does help. This year, however, less skill is required.

Redfish are probably more abundant than at any time within the past 20 years. Most are only 9 to 16 inches long, but they offer bright hope for the fu-

V" PSTN f. ture since they grow rapidly, an what is small now can soon be big.

Redfish are known by many names.

On the east coast they are called "channel bass" or "red. drum." In Mexico the name becomes "pescado colorado" or just "colorado." When they are small the term "rat red" is used; when large they are called "bull reds."

The latter names have no distinct size connotations.

Whatever the name, this species, widespread. It has been found as far north as Massachusetts and as far south as Tampico. Mexico. It has not been reported as far south as Vera Cruz, Mexico, or from the West Indies.

It normally stays close to shore, but vast schools have been sighted in the Gulf as far as 12 miles offshore, and a few have been caught on Gulf reefs.

'Redfish frequently are not red. The color may be silvery, grayish, bronze, coppery, yellow, and sometimes almost black. Those in the Gulf are often silvery or copperish; those in muddy bays are darker. Even though the color varies, there is, as a rule, at least one jet black spot at the base of the tail.

'There may be many spots; one fish captured in the Laguna Madre had 219. One exception had none at all.

Redfish, like most other members of the croaker family, spawn in the Gulf.

At one time it was thought that spawning was confined to September, October, and November. Now, however, it appears that this activity extends from August through January at least.

Because of this long season. there is a tremendous size range in any particular age group.

Post larval redfish can be found all along the surf zone in fall and winter. They are usually on-half to one inch long. These young fish move through passes into secluded bays.

Sometimes they travel as much as 60 miles before stopping.

During the first few months, the young fish stay in protected water with little wave action. Strong currents are avoided. There is preference for slightly muddy bottoms with scattered vegetation of clumps of oysters shell. Edges of channels and basins are used extensively. As the fish get larger, they scattered out over the flats, channels and reefs and may even move back to the Gulf.

Redfish grow faster than trout or black drum. A redfish one year old is about 13 to 14 inches long and weighs about one pound. By the time it is two

Wedne7,day, ,April. 2, 1969 years old it is 19 to 22 inches long and weighs three to three and a half pounds. At the end of the third year lengths of 26 to 30 inches are attained, while weights of six to eight pounds are common. Little is known of growth after this. There is some evidence that fish of 35 to 38 inches are about four and five years old. Spawning takes place at, the end of the third or fourth year.

Email redfish feed primarily on small food: copepods, amphipods, and grass shrimp. As the fish get larger the diet changes to small fish, shrimp, and crabs. One fish may consume 20 to 50 small crabs in a short time. Feeding may occur at any time, but is more pronounced, at night, early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

On rare occasions a redfish will get up and travel though most roam over a very limited territory.- One notable journey was made by a young fish from San Antonio Bay. This particular fish was one of a small group tagged in 1966. A few months later it was recaptured by a surprised fisherman in Tampa Bay, Florida. This set a record for distance but not for speed. That record is probably held by a redfish tagged in Aransas Bay in 1950. This same fish was recaptured in a biologist's net in the very same spot the next day. Again it was released. Eleven days later it was caught by a sport fisherman 110 miles up the coast. As a rule, however, the redfish stay at home.

There is a general Gulfward migration in late fall and a baywar movement in the spring. Some excellent catches are made in winter. Extremely cold weather. however, can drive fish from the bays and this helps them survive the oeleasional blizzards which hit the Texas Coast. • Redfish are euryhaline, which means they can tolerate wide ranges of salinity. They often run up rivers into nearly freshwater and they have also been found in water twice as salty as that in the Gulf.

Several years ago, red fish appeared to be in danger of depletion. Stocks in the bay were low, fishing pressure was high, and most of the young fish had been killed in a disastrous freeze. Today, a year after a highly successful spawn, the picture is much brighter.

The high survival of the young redfish is believed to be due to near perfect environmental conditions in the bays as a result of ample rainfall.

A size limit of 14 inches was enacted

,day, April 2, 1069 by the 60th Legislature and has been in effect since September, 1967. This is an 'experimental law which stays in effect only five years unless reenacted.

The redfish is the only bay species which could benefit from such protection. For a size limit to be effective, the fish must grow fast. The redfish does. The natural mortality rate must be fairly low. Tag returns indicate this is true for redfish. The fish in question must be able to withstand capture and release. Some people can kill any fish, but most can release a redfish unharmed. A size limit can be useful when there is a shortage of spawn or spawning stock. Such a shortage has been noted along the Texas Coast.

This year, however, there is an exceptionally good supply of small fish. All in all, the size limit should allow harvest of redfish at a size when they are worth keeping. The bays are now full of small fish which should provide good fishing for the future.

The fisherman who eased into the water to wade for redfish was but one of a vast horde seeking this fighting fish. A survey by Belden Associates indicate that sport fishermen in Texas caught 9,199,000 pounds of redfish in 1969. Other surveys indicated much smaller but still substantial catches.

Whatever the catch, at least 500,000 fishermen were involved. The commercial harvest during this same period was 746,000 pounds, Redfish are primarily bottom feeders, but will also strike at the surface. They may be caught along the edge of channels, on the grassy flats, in basins, near passes, on reefs, and in the Gulf. The wade fisherman, working the grassy flats, tries to place his lure in the bare spots along the vegetation. He may even skip a spoon over the surface of the water in order to avoid getting fouled with moss. Most people feel this is the best way to fish for reds. Others swear by dead shrimp fished along the edges of channels, potholes, or reefs. Still others prefer surf fishing using lures, shrimp, or cut mullet. Along the upper coast fishermen rush to Gulf piers when very rough fall weather rolls the water.

There they stand shoulder to shoulder seeking and sometimes catching "bull reds" of 30 to 40 pounds.

People travel into the Gulf to fish for kings and ling. They may go further out and try for sails and marlin.

Others swear by night fishing for specks or channel fishing for big drum.

But to most bay fishermen, the red-

BOBWHITE QUAIL NEEDS WEEDS The physical condition and population of bobwhite quail are determined, to a great extent, by the availability and nutritional values of wild game foods, according to Horace Gore, wildlife supervisor in Waco for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Gore says food habit studies for quail indicate that as long as good quality food is available, quail maintain or gain weight. But when these foods disappear, the weights decrease accordingly. Forage with less nutrition might sustain life but usually result in a less vigorous bird.

In a bobwhite quail study conducted in Hill, Baylor, and Throckmorton counties, the November average was one quail per five .acres. The coveys averaged . 13 1/2 birds.

The following February averages for the same counties were one quail per nine acres and the average covey contained 10 individuals. This represents a population decrease of 45 per cent.

Nutritional values of some of the important natural foods of the bobwhite quail can be directly associated with the physical condition of the birds.

Previous quail studies show that seed from deer vetch were made up of 45 2 per cent protein.

Other high quality natural quail foods and their percentages of protein include: bundle flower, 35.9; trailing wild bean, 26.2; broomweed, 22.9; winter greens, 23.2; begger weed, 22: sunflower, 18.1; ragweed, 16.8; and acorns 7.4 per cent.

Domestic foods generally do not show as high a protein per tentage as wildfoods. Yellow corn, for instance, shows 8.8 per cent protein. Grasshopper eggs, even though a small portion of the quail's diet, contains 19.3 per cent protein.

Gore says enough food should be produced to provide sustenance during the critical late winter months.

Recommended procedures would include selected • disking in pastures to promat'e weed growth for both food and cover. Many native weeds have proven to be the most valuable for game species. If weed control is to be applied to an area the operator should anticipate a smaller dove and quail crop.

Quality nesting cover may be provided by native weeds and grasses.

17 Fireguards that are renovated during the early spring usually produce weeds which provide quality food for game birds as well as protect the area against fire. Gore says native shrubs and vines provide excellent escape cover so vital to quail.
