GIVE. THESE A THOUGHT Nothing is easier to pick up and harder to drop than a prejudice! "The fraternal societies are, in my opinion, one of the greatest powers for good government, and the protection of the home that we have in this country." —Theodore Roosevelt. • • There are very many people who will not stand at the edge of a skyscraper, but will drive down the highway at 90 miles an hour! • • Traffic crashes do not just happen — they are Caused — and they are primarily the result of mistakes by drivers. It is said that boy babies born in 1969 will live longer, enjoy more education, spend more years in gainful occupation, and tally more in lifetime earnings than their fathers and grandfathers. Baby boys born 60 years ago could expect to finish grade school, work for 32 years, and earn around $90,000. Those born 40 years ago could look forWard to one to three years of high school, to start work at 16, to working 34 years, and to lifetime earnings of $120,000. The average boy baby born 20 years ago graduated from high school, started work at 18, will work 38 years, and will earn $265,000 during his lifetime. This year's male baby will
spend one to three years in college, will begin working at 20 and will keep at it for 43 years to earn $470,000. Kindness and/or Cleverness: In this modern hurried age kindness is often crowded out, if not by greed then by thoughtlessness. Yet how much happiness a very little kindness can bring!, Especially is it the time for kindness when there is need for an encouraging word, a helping hand or the proverbial "cup of cold water." Instead of being kind, the tendency today is to be clever. Of course, the word "clever" has various connotations. Certain beasts of prey are spoken of as being especially clever; such as the coyote and the wolverine. An ingenious toy, tool, gadget or trap may be said to be clever. The quick response, the witty reply are also said to be clever. Clever, however is a word of but limited praise. Thus if you wanted to compliment a lawyer, rather than telling him he had been clever you would use such expressions as resourceful, skillful or astute. It should be noted that one of the definitions for 'clever' given by Webster is "intelligent, quick, ingenious, and resourceful, but lacking in depth, soundness, wisdom, or morality." A clever lawyer may well be a tricky one, even as tricks are the stock in trade of the clever magician. Cleverness also
