FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Let us face the facts; we sell Fraternal Life Insurance with Benevolence -- Humanity — and Brotherhood included, plus Fraternalism; and there are two things that are inevitable: In all of our lives either we die too soon or we live too long — and life insurance provides solutions for both of these problems. It provides face values if we die too soon, and cash values if we live too long. You as the underwriter must carry this message to our people and make them understand it. Too often people are complacent only to find that they are not prepared, they must become a burden to their children or to society. They lose their independence completely. We in the life insurance business have a wonderful opportunity to serve our fellow man by seeing that things like this do not, happen. We can make these people aware of their needs for protection and savings before it is too late. 4

Somebody, somewhere, did what they were supposed to do. All of us have, I am certain, seen a widow leave her husband's grave with her children knowing that they are provided for and that someone, somewhere did their Job correctly. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius H. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and for this kind deed he was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February about the year 270. At this time it was the custom in Rome to celebrate, in the month of February, the Lupercalia feast in honor of a heathen god. On this occasion, amid a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed. The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavored to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by submitting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Luperealia began the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine's Day for the celebration of this new feast. So it seems that the custom of young men chosing maidens for valentines, or saint.° as patrons for the coming year arose in this way. their work well, this gentleman can enjoy his remaining years on earth
with serenity and peace of mind, dependent upon no one for his support. Ours is a wonderful endeavor and we can thank our insurance programs and our fraternalism. Let us practice it! 4

All of us know that one President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was born on February 12, 1809. In March, 1968, United States Senator, Roman L. Hruska of Nebraska, wrote and I feel it bears repeating: "As every American schoolboy knows and as many school children in foreign countries are taught — Abraham Lincoln was born in a dirt-floored log
