FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK A. New Year of Opportunity has appeared before us and it is in our power to make the best of it. One of the products that we can sell plus the good insurance benefits that we offer is "Brotherhood," which is one of our mottoes, With a fraternal organizatiOn like ours, we have much more to sell than just plain "life insurance." Just turn your Vestnik (Herald.) over to the back page and I ask you: "If that is not brotherhood, what is?" May Your editor suggest: Hand your Vestniks to your next-door neighbors when you are through with them, if you are not saving them, just for the heck of it! On one of my trips here to West, before January 1st, Brother Morris and I were discussing that very fact, that the back page which the editor makes up about once every three or four weeks is almost really lost since only members gennerally get it, and that it is more for the consumption of the public that do not know about our Society. Of course, you do not want to get someone interested who you feel would not, in your opinion, be a desirable . member in your lodge, as all of us know that we want good, sincere and down-to-earth citizens as fellow members. Let its go forward with Brotherhood and FraternaliSm as the new year beckons us on.
Have a Little Chuckle . . . A woman appeared at the police station to report that her husband had disappeared. She gave the desk sergeant a picture of the missing man. After looking at the picture the sergeant inquired: "In case we find him, is there an y messag e you would like for us to give him?" "Yes," replied the wife, "tell biro didn't come after all." At the circus in Chicago last year a man was observed near the camels. ITe picked an a straw, placed it squarely on the camel's back, and waited. Nothing ha ppened. "Wrong straw," he muttered, and hurried off. We are proud of our records of the past, for we have made a great advance in our sales and assets, and we have increased our reserves. The Fraternal spirit and Brotherhood that exists in our Society is exemplified by the spotless, wonderful facilities we have for our elderly members at the SPJST Rest Home in Taylor, Texas with another on the drawing boards for the NeedvilleRosenberg area. What other insurance companies but fraternals offer these? Is that not a good arguMent in favor of the benefits we realize when it
comes to taxation at the State and Federal levels? Brotherhood and Fraternalism are composed of many things — faith in the brotherhood of all mankind — the unswerving belief in the goodness of ones fellow man and it must not be allowed to be detoured or weakened by the questionable actions of some fellow human, but rather be strengthened by the evidence one aces about himself of kindness, benevolence and forgiving spirits. We must remember though how we handle this word "spirit." It nearly got a friend financially embarrassed. A political party friend of his approached him for a donation, and he replied: "I'm sorry, but another engagement prevents my attending the fund-raising dinner. However, I will be with you in spirit." Undaunted, his friend replied: "Fine. Just give me your check for $100 and we will save a place at the table for your spirit." Next to the home and school, fraternal societies do more to build character and promote Americanism among our youngsters than any group of organizations. If we teach our youngsters early in life the true principles of fraternalism, through our youth clubs, it will make for a better place to live.
