From The Editor For the First Time. This is my first editorial to you, our membership, who receive and read the "Vestnik" or "Herald."

I am doing this editorial in the January 1st issue because Bro. Morris felt it was only correct, and I agree, since we both take on new responsibilities on January 1, 1969. You will find a message from him in this issue.

I accept this new duty and challenge (and it is a challenge) with the attitude that I intend to do it justice. I have had the advantage of working with Bro. Morris for approximately four weeks, and certainly am more fortunate than he was in October,.1962, when he stepped into the office after the sudden death of Bro. L. 0. Hosek.

BrO. Morris told me that he does not know hovi well he could have done without the help of Bro. Jerome Koj ecky and the personnel of the printshop, and he is right, because I can see that I will have to also depend on them. Please read the last eight sentences in the second paragraph of his editorial in last week's issue. How true they are! You either do it or it's not there! It cannot wait for next week — that I have seen!

I- feel honored that you have allowed me the privilege of trying to serve our SPJST in the capacity as editor and I certainly will try to do my best in that capacity. That I will make some mistakes, I have no doubt; however, if I do, I assure you that I am human and humble enough to admit them and correct them. However, please do not ask for the unnecessary, impossible, or unfraternal. This is not my, your, or any particular person's publication, but the property of ALL of us in the SPJST. It is OURS, however, and remember that the editor has responsibilities he is bound by from a journalistic standpoint, by the dictates of the convention in the by-laws, close cooperation with the Publication Committee (for which I am grateful), and a moral responsibility, and, probably more important than all of the above, to do his best to keep harmony in our Society. Constructive criticism has never hurt anyone, if they are sensible about it; however, let us make sure that it is constructive.

I hope the Czech section continues to exist, as long as there are readers

I was happy to have had the pleasure of meeting Brothers Jerome Kopecky, John Ripley, Ernest Tobola, and all of the others. I am sure that we can and will work together for the good of the Vestnik. I have known Br6.

Joe Holasek, publisher, for over 21 years, and value his aquaintance as very personal and fraternal. To me, he is a prince of a man and I know he values his loyal employees very highly. If you wish to see some loyal and devoted workers, just come to the Cochosloyak Publishing Company! I am sure they feel the same way about their employer. When I addressed Bro. Kopecky as "Mr." he informed me (with a smile) that there is very little time in the printing business for titles, and I can see that. Time and space are essential commodities.

To The Moon And Back. As I sit here writing these lines, listening to the radio in the background, my mind flashes back to my boyhood in the late 20's and early 30's, when I used to attend lectures by Dr. Karel Hujer, a Czech astronomer, educated in Charles University, Prague. My father, with Bro. John Nemy, and other officers of Lodge Liberty 136, had invited Dr. Mier a number of times to show slides and lecture on astronomy. I understand that he was a professor of astronomy at Columbia University, the last time I heard of him. He would show slides of the moon, mars, versus, and other planets, and point out various points with a long pointer and speak of them. He had access to Mt. Palomar and other observatories of the world. He would say that one of these days, we would be at those places, and that the younger people in his audience would live to see it become a fact! I imagine I sat there with my mouth open, just not being able to comprehend how this could be accomplished; however, after witnessin g the first radar wave bouneed back from the moon, at 186,000 miles a second, while teaching basic radar

VESTNIK school in the army during World War II, which told the world exactly how far away the moon was, I realized how right he had been. The radio has just announced that our three astronauts, Borman, Lovell, and Anders, have just begun orbiting the moon for 20 hours, after another "burn" of their booster rocket. How I hope (I am sure the entire world), that the rocket will "burn" at least that essential one more time in the wee hours of December 25th, CST, to send these brave young men back to Mother Earth and their families for a successful splashdown! I have faith in otir technology that it will. How true that Czech song, "Okolo mesice kola se delaji" ("Around the Moola, Circles are Being Made").

This is the first time, to mly knowledge, in the history of the SPJST that thaw of the highest; positions were replaced in one convention, namely: the president, treasurer, and editor. To Brother Nick Morris, who has so patiently shown me the various things that have to be done and how, I wish the most successful and productive leadership of our Society, as long as he holds the office of president of the Supreme Lodge. To Brother Leonard Mikeska, our new treasurer, I also wish the best of luck.

To retiring Brother and Sister Edward Marek, I wish a healthy, happy and prosperous, well-deserved retirement, although I know they will still be amon g us, as will Brother and Sister Charles Bolasek, to whom I wish the same. They are ALL toofraternally-inclined not to he with us when they can. Of course, I do not intend to or wish to omit any of the re-eleeted officers, directors, wives and families, including newly-elected Director Joseph Koliha, Jr., and fartily, in wishing them the best of luck in the future.

I value all those too-numerous-tomention members who have stood steadfastly by me all of these years.

To MC they are real personal and fraternal friends. I will name just a few with no intention of slighting any others: my wife, Maxine, my mother, Mrs. Theresa Sefcik, my two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Vlha of Crosby, and Mrs. Lydia Hendrick of Houston, Brother and, Sister J. M. Skrabanek of Bellaire, Sister Frances Olexa (who signed me up in Lodge 88), and many many

3 more. If I tried to mention i em all, I surely would omit someoned• etatainly do not want to do so, know who they are anyway.

Newsbrief Josef P. Mohel, 89, passed away in a Taylor hospital on Dec. 19th. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery. Bro. Mohel was a member of SP,iST Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

Airman First Class Edward N. Skrabanek of Temple returiled home Dec. 16th from his tour of duty in Thailand, Japan, and the Philippine Islands. He and his wife are spending the holidays with their parena3, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Skrabanek and Mr.. and, Mrs. Arnold Marek, all of Temple.

They will be stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois in early January.

John R. Samek, 85, passed away in Gainesville Memorial Hospital on Dec. 16th. Brbther Samek was a member of SPJST Lodge No, 101, Gaines' • Berry Lee Altman, 58, passed away the VA Hospital in Dallas on Dec. 1691.

Burial was in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah, Texaa. Brother Altman was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Brother Urbanovsky of the Supreme Lodge sends us this item from a recent issue of "Texas Aggie," alumni publication of Texas A&M University: Czech Scholarships Awarded To Largest University Group Scholarship awards to students of Czech at Texas A&M University have been made possible by a $1,000 Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) grant.

Twenty students will benefit froth_ scholarship awards according to Mod•' ern Languages Department head Dr. Jock A... Dabbs. A spring study indicated A&M had 30 pi=ai cent of the Czechstudying students in the nation, the largest university group in the country. The U.S. Office of Education classifies Czech as a critical language.

Pvt. John Vavra JOHN VAVRA STATIONED NEAR NATION'S CAPITOL

Pvt. A. J. Vavra (John), US Army, is presently stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia, just a stone's throw from the nation's capitol and the Pentagon, where he is doing office work in Washington.

John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Vavra of Bryan arid the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Vavra. of Hearne. Parents, grandparents, and John are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor near Caldwell, where Grandfather Vavra is lodge president and where John was active as a mem-

ber of the youth club before he ente •ed college and the US Army. Mrs. Ida Baker is John's maternal grandmother and she also lives in Hearne.

John attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan. After graduation he attended 'A&m for one year.

He interrupted his education for one year to enlist in the army. He took his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

After he completes his military obligation, he plans to continue his education, majoring in architectural engineering.

where he won the coveted title, Grand Champion Calf. Ronnie has been a member of the Industrial 4-H Club for the past six years. In 1967, Ronnie had the Grand Champion Fat Barrow.

Last spring, his Hereford heifer took Grand Champion of the Victoria County Youth Fair.

— HAPPY NEW YEAR — Corpus Christi, Texas A FRATERNAL FAREWELL

On December 31, my time as director of District 7 and as a member of the Supreme Lodge comes to an end. On January 27, 1969, I will be 77 years of age and this is reason enough for me not to have sought re-election at the 20th Convention. Our District 7 will have a good member replacing me in the person of Bro. Jos. Koliha, Jr., for his experience as treasurer of our Society for 25 years qualifies him so that I feel I can assure you that he will be a good, and capable director. He

Wednesday, January 1, 1069 knows the entire district very well and nearly all our .district membership personally and knows about all the loans. I wish him very much luck in his new office.

I have been a district director for 20 years, having first been elected in the Taylor convention in 1940. It was during World, War II, when our Society was in a critical stage financially, trying to recover from the depression. Our loans for instance, put us in a very risky situation, because we were forced to repossess over 40 peices of farm and city property. We lost over a quarter of a million dollars in bonds at that time. In the Taylor convention, we had a five-member board of directors set up for the purpose of controlling the investments of our funds. In four years, after the Taylor convention, we found our finances in better shape and we had restored the confidence of the public in the SPJST, and it began to prosper again.

In the 1952 Houston convention, the SPJST was divided into seven districts, and I was again elected director, and I was elected to represent District 7.

I tried to represent our district faithfully.

There have been a number of changes down through the years, and after each convention, changes were made to conform with the changing times. We should be thankful that we have been fortunate enough to have had personnel at the helm of our Supreme Lodge to guid,e it as they have, both financially and in membership.

Our longtime president, Bro. Edward L. Marek, deserves much credit for our present favorable position and, certainly the entire membership is grateful to him for his untiring efforts.

We are confident that Bro. Marek's successor will follow in his footsteps, and that Bro. Nick Morris, in his youthful enthusiasm., will' lead our SPJST to still greater accomplishments. And with Bro. Leonard Mikeska as our treasurer, I am sure our leadership will be in good and, competent hands and our future growth ensured.

I leave the office of director and retire into the background:, but I will be with you as long as I live, for I feel that fate will allow me a number of years more to help our SPJST and work with you, as well as in my local lodge, and in my district.

5 the fried chicken, and the ladies brought two covered dishes. We had a lot of good food. Ladies, you really went all out with all the fancy dishes.

We have some good cooks. I wish we could have that good attendance every month. It was good to see so many come out.

Mrs. R. A. Hrncirik, Sr., volunteered to see about renting the same building for our meeting every month. She has informed me that we can rent it for 1969, the second Sunday. So for 1969 we will meet on the second Sunday of each month at 2- p.m., sand we will bring our lunches as always. I hope we can have a good attendance all year because this build,ing is centrally heated and Cooked.

8 After the meeting, the youth club had a very nice Christmas program.

We also sang several Christmas songs, which we all enjoyed. After the program, we had a social which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

In the last meeting, we had decided to add a badly needed kitchen to our hall. This is something that will be of benefit to everyone.

Our next regular meeting is the first Sunday of January at 2 p.m. Let's all make it a must in 19-69 to try our best to attend our meetings. Here's wishing you all a very Happy and; Prosperous New Year!

Louis .Hanus was given a big hand for starting the social night! Everyone enjoyed the Blue Room Christmas party and the following worked hard on all that good food , and decorations: Tommy and Marlene Caraway, Mary Louise Kadlecek, Rita and Frank Broz, Ray Dixon, Ernest Hanka, Louise and Ed Kadlecek, Dorothy and Abner Dixon, Charles Evetts, Carol Liebscher, Karen and Kenny Broz, and Juan Castellano!

Emcee Mary Louise Kadlecek did a fine job of announcing at the party and asked the guests to sing "Happy Birthday" to Jeanette Walkoviak who had a birthday that day! Expert photographer Richard Schnell was busy taking pictures which I know we all will enjoy seeing! Chairman Harley Cox is working hard on plans for the Entertainment Committee! There was a huge crowd at the Telstars dance, and there were several large parties there, for example: Mildred and Jack Holeman and their legal secretaries group, the Social Night group, Doris and Henry Knapick and their large group of friends, Marlene and Tommy Caraway's company party, the Albert Miculka group, and other parties whose names I didn't get!

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE

I come to the membership of our SPJST this week as your new president of the Supreme Lodge. I address you with a deep sense of ,gratitude, humility, and an awareness of what the office means to our Society. I am thankful to the delegates to the 20th COnvention for their expression of confidence in my abilities to lead our wonderful Society. There are few honors in this state that rank with that of president of the SPJST. As I Stated right after my election, I will, with God's help and yours, do my very best.

The responsibilities are enormous; the tasks that face us are challenging and demanding, but I have no doubt that later, as we look back, we will be able to state that the tasks have been accomplished and the will of the membership fulfilled. The only thing that

any officer in this Society should keep in mind, from the Supreme Lodge on clown, is the ultimate success of the SPJST.

Here at the beginning of a new year, let us strive for the unity and strength of our Society. Then let each of us resolve to make a personal contribution to help make these goals come true.

We are a vigorous and healthy fraternal society. Our devotion to the SPJST means that we stand ready to defend it and work for its success.

The fact' that we are humans means that there will inevitably be disagreements, but these problems are born of strength, not weakness, and I look forward to this strength carryin,g us on to greater achievements in the coming years. I look forward to working with the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge. This goes for the incumbent officers, as well as the new ones.

We may have different approaches and solutions to many questions. but we will ultimately solve them in a manner most beneficial to the SPJST. I have had a number of conferences with our retiring president, Bro. Edward L. Marek. His shoes will be hard to fill. He has been most helpful to me, and, his continued help, advice, and cooperation in the home office will be a great help to all of us. I will seek his counsel whenever necessary.

I have no delusions about knowing everything there is to know from the very first day, but we have competent people in the home office and I know I can expect their help and cooperation.

I wish to issue a plea to the entire membership to take an active part in our SPJST, at whatever level best suits them. If you're willing to get involved, there is surely a spot for you.

Once you get into fraternal work, I know you will like it. I ask that our lodge youth leaders, district youth directors, and organizers continue their fine work and strive constantly to improve their local unit, bring in more of the type of new members that we wish to be associated with so that we may continue to enjoy the benefits of a fraternal society. Lodge work is very important, for that is the structural backbone of our organization: One of our major goals should be to "awaken" some of our inactive lodges.

Wednesday, January 1, 1969 and sacrifice: If that is what it will take, that is what we will endeavor to do. I intend doing all I can to this end.

The duties and role of the president are pretty well outlined, in our bylaws. I take a rather activist view of the office and feel there is room for innovation and initiation of new ideas.

I will endeavor to articulate our values, outline our goals, and marshal our will and strength. There is tremendous growth potential in our Society, but it must be done in an orderly fashion and within the framework of a fraternal benefit society. We must never lose sight of this.

My office doors will be open to all members. This is OUR society and all of you are shareholders, if you pleae.

I will maintain constant communication with the membership through the Medium of the Vestnik. Although I may not agree with a person's position on a given matter, everyone has a right to be heard. Keep in mind, however, that the Supreme Lodge examines the entire picture and an individual's objective or concern may not necessarily be consistent with that of the Society as a whole.

To retiring Brothers Marek and Holasek, we extend our best wishes for a long period of pleasant retirement, and to Brother Koliha, our best wishes for a fruitful tenure of office as District VII. We welcome Bro. Leonard Mikeska as the new treasurer of the Supreme Lodge. I know he will serve us well.

I'll be reporting to you again when events warrant it. May the New Year bestow its richest blessings upon all of you.

Lodge to the local lodge level. We have within our grasp a tremendous potential for growth in size and in possibility for increased services to our membership.

Nevertheless, we find ourselves surrounded by a world of progress and constant change. The economic surroundings in which we must compete are becoming more and more complex. Consequently, we must all set our eyes to the horizon, coordinate our efforts and work together harmoniously. All of us working together cannot help but make the SPJST the top fraternal organization, not only in Texas, but in the entire nation. The number one spot is reserved for us and we can and will make it — just give us a few years and a little more determination.

I see within our structure tremendous possibilities for future growth.

To begin with, look at our unmatched record of past operations and our financial condition. Look at the wide variety of fraternal activities and services we offer. Look at the fact that we sell life insurance at the lowest possible cost and now find that we will still be able to begin offering premium refunds to our members (payment of dividends). We should be very proud of our Society.

Now, looking back into the past, I find it a must to thank those before us for keeping our Society so healthy, prosperous, and progressive. May I also take this opportunity to briefly thank Bro. 'Jos. Koliha, Jr., our

Christmas is over and another new year will soon be here. It is time to be thinking of new resolutions for 1969. Remember to include some for making the youth club better, increasing the membership and activities.

Let's try to have entries in all contests at YAD. Our District IV YAD is set for the first Sunday of July, which will be July 6 this year. You will be informed through the Vestnik about the YAD, so be sure and read each issue.

Youth leaders, be thinking about attending the Longhorn Recreation Lab in March. I attended last year and it was something I'll never forget. It helped me so much. It was a busy and full week.

Dear Readers, We sang some Christmas carols on Friday, Dec. 20th. We left the Sokol Hall at 6 p.m., and sang until 7:30. We made six or seven stops. Randy Majek played the accordion. After we sang we went to a hamburger place.

After eating, we sang the workers a few songs and then went home. We are going to have a Christmas program on Dec. 22. Our next meeting is on the second Sunday of January,.

Dear Readers, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. Our family did. We had Christmas dinner at our house and Aunt Lydia Rozell, Uncle Gene, and L. J. Horak joined us. Rev. Henry Hese,da also visited us on Christmas Day. Our SPJST Youth Club had a party on Dec. 15th. All the members were present. We sang Christmas carols and played SPJST football. After we exchanged gifts, we had refreshments.

It seemed that the favorite game was playing 'keep-away' between the boys and girls. We girls didn't do very well.

Allen Horak and I got into a struggle over the volley ball and I cut my finger on a piece of glass. Well, at least I came up with the ball.

First of all, we ate a delicious mouth-watering supper. Brother Edward L. Marek gave us an inspirational talk.

After this, Mrs. Edward L. Marek, Mrs. Nick Morris, and Mrs. Emil Harms each were presented with a corsage.

Brothers Marek, Morris and Emil Harms were, presented with boutonniers. Barbara Gaidusek presented Mrs. Libbie Parma, youth leader, with a ,gift from the youth club. Mrs. Betty Slovak and Mrs. Gloria Locke, assistant youth leaders, were presented with a gift. Mrs. Parma presented Barbara Gaidusek, president of the youth club, and Donna Gerlich, secretary of the youth club, with gifts from the youth club.

Afterwards, the youth club presented, the audience with a play. The youth took part in the Nativity Scene. The teenagers sang various Christmas carols, Then Santa. Claus appeared with his red suit and jolly laugh.

The children, sat on Santa's lap while he gave them bags of candy.

Dec. 8th. The children built the float, with some our Christmas program, which we gave on Dec. 22nd. Our program consisted of three parts, (1) Welcome, (2) Merry Christmas wish, and (3) our manger scene. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec .7th in the Concha Memorial Chapel , with the Rev. Jewel Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Coupland Cemetery, with the Graham Lund Post in charge of full military graveside rites.

FINDEISEN, who passed away in the VA Hospital in Temple Dec. 5th, 1968.

JOSEF P. MODEL, who passed away in a Taylor hospital on Dec. 19, 1968 at the age of 89. He was torn Jan. 12, 1879 at Industry, Texas, and had lived in Taylor for 60 years. On Aug. 29, 1899 he was married to Miss Anna Kovar, who preceded him in death on June 15, 1962. A son Dan also preceded him in death. The surviving are three• daughters, Mrs. Lillian Kasparek of Taylor; Mrs. Mary Loessin and Mrs. Dotsy Miertschim, both of Houston; a son, Jimmie Mabel of Taylor; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Veselka of Taylor and Millie Kovar of Granger; three brothers, Emil Gelner Of Taylor, Willie Gelner of Granger, and Rudolph Gelner of Burkburnett; eleven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 20 in the Condra Memorial Chapel,' followed by 10 am. rites in St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Braden, the Rev. Jerry Smith,

and the Rev. Patrick Johnson, officiatin. Interment was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Items of Interest THE MONROE DOCTRINE On Dec, 2, 1823, 145 years ago, President James Monroe announced his op›position to any extension of Etropean power over territory on the American continents. This principle, commonly known as the Monroe Doctrine, was advanced in the President's annual message to Congress and referred specifically to boundary disputes between the United States on the one hand, and Russia and Great Britain on the other. President Monroe said: "The American continents are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European power." lie also stated that the United States would consider any act on the part of the Holy Alliance, that is,

12 France, Austria, Russia, and Prussia, to help Spain recover control of South America as unfriendly to the United States.

As a result of the Monroe Doctrine, the French in 1866 were asked to withdraw from Mexico after they had placed Maximilian on the throne. As the independence and strength of Latin American countries became more firmly established, the Monroe Doctrine receded in importance. That it is still a cardinal part of American policy was dramatically shown, however, when the United States and.. the Soviet Union confronted each other in the Cuban missle crisis during President Kennedy's administration.

- HAPPY NEW YEAR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS ARE BIG BUYERS AS WELL AS SELLERS The Texas agricultural industry continues to be a vital part of the state's economy. Despite the continuing decrease in the number of farms and the percent of the population actually engaged in production agriculture, the total value of its raw products ranks second only to crude ail, reports John G. McHaney, Extension economist at Texas A&M University.

Texas agricultural producers, he explains, in 1967 spent more than $1.6 billion for items used in current farm operating expenses. And such spending, he adds kept a lot of cash registers ringing from cross-roads country stores to those on main street in major cities of the state and nation.

They spent $772 million for feed, livestock, seed and fertilizers and lime, and most of these items were purchased locally, points out the economist. Another $309 million went for repairs and operation of capital items, including repairs and maintenance of buildings, machinery and motor vehicles, and petroleum products used in the farm business. Here again local suppliers got most of this business, says McHaney.

And there's much more. Another $327 million went for such items as interest on money borrowed for operating expenses, for pesticides, ginning, electricity, livestock marketing charges, irrigation, g razing, veterinary services and medicines, and many others.

Expenditures for hired labor totaled $212 million, and much of this in turn was spent by the laborers for consumer goods and ;services along main street.

V2STNfK Other expenses included $321 million for depreciation and other consumption of farm capital items; $101 million for taxes on farm property; $99 million for interest on farm mortgage debts and $56 million to non-farm landlords for rent.

Every segment of the business world is involved and receives benefits from the spending of our agricultural producers, explains McHaney. Those who manufacture, transport, store, sell and service the needs of farmers are a part of the agribusiness complex of the industry. And never forget, emphasizes the economist, that much of the income left after all expenses of production are paid are spent by the producer for consumer goods and services for his family, again on main street.

Literally thousands of Texans and others outside the state are part of the total agricultural industry. Some 40 per cent of the state's labor force is employed in agriculture or related industries, says McHaney.

Texas farmers and ranchers each year receive about $2.5 billion for the products they produce, leaving them around $300 million after all expenses are paid.

As these products move from the farms and ranches to the ultimate consumer, another $4 billion is added to the agribusiness economy of the state , noints out McHaney.

Because of the efficiency and productive capacity of U. S. agriculture, the nation's consumers spend only about 17 per cent of their take-home pay for food, less than in any other nation, and a bargain in any language, says the economist.

Add it up and any way you figure it, agriculture is still and will continue to he big business in Texas, con-. dudes McHaney.

-- HAPPY NEW YEAR — THE WILD TURKEY, TEXAS' WILDEST GAME Ben Franklin once suggested that the wild turkey rather than the bald eagle should be our national bird. He was overruled, but the idea remains that the wild turkey, more than any other bird, symbolizes a bountiful land.

The wild turkey was, of course, the •reain dish in the first Thanksgiving Day feast, and turkey, both wild and domestic, has been traditional fare ever since. The man who sits clown to a feast of wild turkey he has killed himself gets a double bonus. The big bird is net only delicious, but fun to hunt as well and is considered by many sportsmen to be one of the most elusive game animals in North America.

There are three races of wild turkey in Texas — the Merriam or mountain turkey, the eastern turkey, and the Rio Grande turkey. Of these three, the Rio Grande turkey remains the most abundant for hunting purposes with the Herriams being limited locally to two West Texas counties.

E. A. Walker, director of wildlife services, for the Texas Parks and wildlife Department, says knowledge of the wild turkey's habits and appearance is a must for the hunter.

Walker says the education of the hunter should include a visit to a

Wednesday, January 1, 1969 turkey farm which raises bronze domestic turkeys to study the differences in gobblers and hens as to feather coloration and body conformation.

It is legal to kill gobblers and bearded hens in regulatory districts during open seasons, but, Walker says, many fine young gobblers are passed up because they have no visible beards, and inexperienced hunters are afraid they will shoot an illegal hen.

A knowledge of the wild turkey's habits and behavior might help the hunter, Walker says. He offer8 this brief rundown on the turkey.

Wild turkeys normally appear in the largest flocks during the late fall and winter months when hens and gobblers are observed flocking separately.

In the late fall, hens and young of the year may be seen together, the young including males and females.

Walker says old toms at this time flock by themselves in groups ranging from three or four up to about 20 birds with nine to 12 constituting an average flock.

Turkeys, during the winter months, usually inhabit the rougher terrain of a given turkey range, particularly along stream courses in relatively heavy wooded areas.

Acorns, when available, make up a large percentage of the fall and winter diet but may be supplemented by various berries including some of the sumacs, the hackberry, and the cedar berry. Winter greens are taken along with any beetles and grasshoppers which may be present.

According to Walker, the turkeys begin to move out from their wintering area around the last of February. It is during this time that the old toms begin gathering harems, three to seven or eight hens. Nesting begins in April and May and the average clutch is approximately 11 eggs which hatch 28 .days after incubation begins.

The peak of nesting activity usually occurs in May and June, when the greater portion of the young are hatched. During laying, each old gobbler ranges in a very restricted area, and is visited each day or second day by the hens in their harems. They eat very little at this time depending on a fat pad behind their crops for nutrients. These fat pads are built up from rich foods such as acorns, during the fall and winter.

As the end of the nesting season nears, the old toms begin to gather in

VESTNfIt small flocks. In late summer, hens and young combine to form their own flocks.

When the first northers come in the fall, usually in October, they drift back to the wintering area which is usually completed by the middle of November.

This behavior of wild turkeys results in the occupation of a large block of range by one flock. The distance from wintering areas to nesting areas has been found to be as far as 26 miles in one specific instance.

It, is these normal movements from winter range to summer range which make turkey management complicated.

In order to efficiently manage any game species, it is necessary to have an area sufficiently large to include their year-round range. In some cases any area less than 20,000 acres is probably too small.

Blocks of 50,000 acres are often necessary in sections where the quality of range is only moderately good.

Biologists and game management officers in the field report the turkey population this year to be better than most can remember. Excellent breeding conditions and plenty of feed due to unusual amounts of rain are the reasons for the high numbers.

Turkeys can be still hunted, stalked, or called up by various mechanical means. No matter how they are hunted, most hunters will agree that the difference between success and failure may be the "bat of an eye." Domestic turkeys have a reputation for being dumb, but wild turkeys are, as one early day writer put it, "crafty like foxes."

William Wood wrote in 1930 that a turkey can "fly like a goose, run like a dog," That and its intelligence, make the wild turkey a worthy quarry for the hunters who like a challenge.

- HAPPY NEW YEAR DR•WNINGS IN TFXAS NOW STAND AT 468 The 468 drowning deaths in Texas have already exceeded last year's accidents by 151 deaths, and more are sure to come, Robert G. Manermann, deputy director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, says drowning reports have tapered off since the opening of school in September. "But if this year is like last year, the duck season will mean tragedy for more Texans," he said.

According to Mauermann, some re-

13 cent cirownings due to boating accidents point out the victim's failure to obey one of the basic principles of boating -- stay with the boat. "This rule is very important to duck hunters who have a boating accident since they will be heavily clothed and very probably unable to swim to save themselves," said Mauermann.

"When a boat capsizes, there is usually still enough buoyancy to keep it afloat," says Mauermann. "Once a person leaves this relatively safe buoyancy of the boat, he is subject to exhaustion, cramps and underwater hazards such as trotlines and brushy snags."

"Distances are hard to judge when you are on the water," says Mauermann. "The shore or another boat is probably farther than you think, and when you get halfway there, it's too late to turn back because you think you can't make it."

According to Mauermann, compliance with the Water Safety Act in havone Coast Guard approved life saving device on board for each person in the boat is imperative. It is important that this device be worn by everyone in the boat. "A life preserver does absolutely no good crammed under the bow of the boat. And it is unlikely that someone wearing heavy clothing could even swim under his boat and put one on in case of an accident," Mauermann said.

Scientifically known. as Bassariscus astutus, which means "clever little fox", the ringtail is sometimes confused with his relative, the stocky raccoon.

The black rings of the ringtail are incomplete on the underside, while the raccoon sports a shorter tail with complete rings.

A splash of whitish cream fur appears a tthe base of each rounded, ringtail ear. He travels on strong, short legs, and each small, cat-like foot has t've, toes armed with sharp, semi-retractile claws. The typical animal is a light ochre color, overcast with blackish guard hairs on the back, with light cream fur underneath the legs and stomach. This odor often confuses the dog's sense of smell and allows the fleeting ringtail to escape. When caught, he bites and scratches furiously until he either breaks free or is killed. No doubt much of this same escape behavior is repeated when he is approached by a marauding wolf. coyote, or bobcat.

His keen sense of smell and everpresent curiosity causes him to fall easy prey to the trapper but his alertness and mobility enable him, to remain relatively free from the danger of many natural predators. The ringtail's worst enemies are the great horned owl and large snakes, especially rattler's, which can penetrate his den, Although the quality of the ringtail's fur has prevented it from being a popular decoration for modern clothing, he was sought by Indians for ceremonial displays, by pioneers for trade, and by early twentieth century trappers for the general fur market.

His pelt is considered one of the simplest to prepare for market.

Since 1900, pelt values have ranged from 50 cents, a price not to be frowned on 60 years ago, to $10 in 1946, a handsome price in any clay.

Even though the recent fur market in Texas has not favored the ringtail, fur buyers in Brown, Burnet, Coleman, Comanche, Erath, Lampasas, Llano, Mason, McCullough, Mills, and San Saba counties bought 16,877 ringtail pelts during the 1965-66 fur season.

He is still an important fur bearer, attracting trappers and hunters according to the annual price of his pelt.

Indeed, this bright-eyed fur bearer with his prominent black and white ringed tail, fills an important ecological niche in our wild environment.

He fulfills -his duty in controlling rats, mice, birds, insects, lizards, snakes and at the same time, helps propagate plants whose seeds and fruits he eats.

Occasionally, he provides a tasty meal for one of his arch enemies. He graces the barn of any farmer or rancher who permits him a living place as he exterminates rodents more efficiently than a domestic cat and is much safer than poison.

certificate, bring it with you, If there is a record of your birth in the county where you were born you will need. to get a copy of that record. But don't delay filing just because you do not have a birth certificate. Contact your local social security office, or call for help in proving your correct date of birth.
