FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK MORE CONVENTION NEWS The front pages of last week's issue of the Vestnik gave our members the highlights of what was accomplished at the recent 20th Convention. This week, we want to give a few more details about some of these items. We will soon publish the detailed minutes and proceedings of the entire convention, so we will not deal with these in too great a detail. In the Youth Department, the big change was the recommendation by the Convention Youth Committee that the department be placed under the overall control of the president, which was approved. Local lodge youth clubs will be reimbursed 25c per active member, instead of the previous 10c (based on the quarterly reports submitted by the lodges). And the District Youth. Fund allocation was raised from the previous 5c to 15c per youth, with no less than $300 to any one district. A standing committee will go to work January 1, 1971 on the possibility of developing a family and youth camp site and recreational site. This body will report to the next convention. • • In addition to approving the construction of a second rest home in District V (Needville-Rosenberg area), a loan of $72,000 was made to the present rest home in Taylor for the con-
struction of a new hospital wing. (It was agreed to call the facility in Taylor "SPJST Rest Home No. 1", and the new one, "SPJST Rest Home No. 2"). Regarding Home No. 2, it Was decided to donate the sum of $100,000 and make a loan in the amount of $150,000. The same board of directors will oversee both installations. Plans for the construction of the new home will presumably get under way soon. • • Age Limit. Quite a lively discussion took place about a proposal to place an age limit of 65 on Supreme Lodge officers, to be effective immediately. A secret ballot was taken and the proposal was defeated 8,148 to 12,934. • • There was no motion made to adopt the O&A Committee's recommendation that Supreme Lodge offices be combined, resulting in a rather quick death for that item. The offices in the Supreme Lodge will remain as they were. • • W e should have mentioned at the beginning that Brother Paul Sablatura (Hillje 40) was elected chairman of the convention, and Brother Sid Pokladnik (84 Dallas) was elected vice chairman. Brothers Steve Valcik of Lodge 88, and George Kacir of Lodge 54 West acted as parliamentarians during the convention.
The three-member Publication Committee was increased to 5, with more of a geographic spread over the whole State. This committee was appointed toward the end of the convention by the convention chairman and vice chairman with the consent of some very tired delegates, although the bylaws require that they be elected by the delegates. • • It is by now well known that the entire convention and, indeed, the entire SPJST, was saddened with the untimely passing of Brother Rudolph Troubil. Funeral rites were conducted. on Friday. • • It was moved and passed that the last Miss $PJST of each convention crown the new Miss SPJST, and that her picture appear on the cover of the Vestnik convention issue, whether she be married or not. District VII was very proud of Miss Joan Pavliska being selected as Miss SPJST of the 20th Convention. • • Temple was selected as the site of the new headquarters office building, with authority given the Supreme Lodge to proceed with the matter as they see fit. They definitely have the authority to build a new building and dispose of th•e present structure. The Supreme Lodge has the authority to
