FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK CONVENTION RE-CAP The next issue of the Vestnik will be the convention issue — 64 pages in length and on a better whiter grade of paper called Texbrite. Material has been steadily coming in, and at this point, it looks like we will be filled up.

We sincerely hope you enjoy that special issue.

We will not have an editorial next week, so in this last issue before the convention issue, we wish to re-cap some of the most important things that will come up for discussion and decision on the convention floor.

1) Sentiment seems to be strong in favor of a new headquarters building.

The big question comes up — where?

That will have to be decided by the delegates. Any city has a right to bid for the new home office, and will have to produce facts and figures backing up their position. Last week, Brother Frank Klinkovsky of Temple outlined why he and other members in that area feel the new building should stQlr in the Temple area.

2) Regardless of where the new building is located, plans should be included for a Museum, Czech library, and SPJST archives collection. The latter would • include historical documents, records, convention pictures,

and other publications relating to the SPJST. It should be spacious enough to take care of any necessary expansion. The same goes for the entire building itself.

3) A new rest home (or homes) and where? The addition of another wing to the present home is a certainty, regardless of what happens otherwise.

The Gulf Coastal area is bidding for a new rest home in the Needville-Rosenberg area. If we build two, the other will probably be built farther north, perhaps even in District IV in the Seymour area. The administration of such a home or homes will have to be considered. Will we create a separate board of directors for each such installation or let the present body handle all of them? Brother J. M. Skraba.nek will probably have some recommendations on this point.

4) Everyone seems to be in favor of paying dividends to our policyholders.

One suggestion has included payment of dividends on a policy that has been in force not less than 10 years. Other details will have to be worked out in convention.

5) Further relief to our older members, offering still more reductions than those provided for in Art. 46 of our by-laws.

6) Direct billing. The by-law committee is in favor of instituting this

system by January 1972, but approval, or at least, discussion of it will take place in this convention. This would simply mean being billed for your insurance premiums by machines in the Supreme Lodge. There are good arguments both for and against this proprosal. It might be good from a strictly business angle, but many fear what this system would do to our lodge system and fraternalism in general.

7) Consolidation of Supreme Lodge offices. The O&A Committee recommended the consolidation of the duties of the financial secretary and treasurer. For some reason, the by-law committee did not make such a proposal, and there seems to be a good deal of doubt as to whether this move would be a wise one. Frankly, not enough light has been shed on the matter.

Two schools of thought are diametrically opposed on this issue. (This is being written prior to a special meeting in District III when, it is hoped, more information will be revealed on the matter).

8) District Organizers — Yes or No? Whether to retain the present system, of district organizers was a matter of concern at the last convention in Waco, and the prospects look good that this matter will again come up this time. It has been proposed that we hire

9) Delegate strength. There have been proposals to change the ratio of delegate representation to the number of memb ers they re-present. It has been suggested that a delegate represent 200 members, instead of the present 100 members. This would indeed trim the number of delegates to our conventions and each delegate would wield more voting power. Conventions would cost less, no doubt about that.

On the other side of the ledger, the larger lodges and those enjoying vigorous growth feel that such a step would penalize them unfairly. The same goes for the proposal to limit the maximum number of delegates any lodge could have to 10. This would also result in cheaper conventions, more individual delegate power, and a decrease in the overall number of delegates.

Some say that the more delegates we have, the more democratic our conventions will be, since it would be easier to influence a few delegates than it would be to sway a couple of dozen.

Human nature and weaknesses enter into this, and this argument has merit.

There are those who regard going to a convention as a sort Of "reward" and should not be restriced in any way.

It might even take away some of the incentive to increase our lodge membership.

Both sides can present valid reasons for their position. Most of our lodges are in the one-to-three delegate category. A check of the roster of delegates will show this, and changing the ratio to 200-to-1 would cut their delegate strength even more. One thing people keep forgetting is that the voting strength of a lodge would not be affected by any such change; only the number of delegates would be changed.

Some people feel that our increase in overall size now warrants cutting the number of delegates by changing the ratio. Others think that we are still far from that point.

10) Another proposal by the by-law committee does not seem warranted and that is the one prohibiting members of the Supreme Lodge, editor, and others from being delegates from their lodges. Prior to the last convention, this was the case, but someone pointed out that to be a delegate was an inherent right of every member of the Society, provided, of course, they were eligible and otherOise qualified

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 delegates in their lodges. This was changed in Waco. (Art. 14 a). Furthermore, any such restriction would be in conflict with Art. 102 of our by-laws, if it is left on the books.

11) Rebate to lodges. At the last convention, the refund to lodges was raised from 2 to 6 per cent. There is now talk of increasing , this to 10 per cent. With the payment of dividends, possible relief to the older members, this will have to be given careful . acturial study. (This is a per cent of the total premiums paid in during the year by any given lodge).

These then, are the most important issues that will have to be resolved by the delegates to the 20th Convention.

There will be many other issues, some small, and some big, but all important.

There will be things that will crop up that no one even suspected would cause difficulty, And those "little" issues !might suddenly become big ones, and the seemingly "big" items might glide through with virtually no trouble. It should be a good convention.

As has been the practice, there will be no Vestnik the week of the convention. After the convention issue, the 11. ,xt issue will be dated June 19th.

Here's wishing the 20th Convention every success, and may everything turn out for the good of the SPJST.

Newsbriefs Felix Repka, 69, passed away in a Victoria hospital on May 17th. Burial was in the Shillerville Cemetery. Bro. Repka was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 143, Inez.

Haisler Reunion

The date of the Haisler Reunion has been changed from June 9th to July 21st, at the American Legion Hall in Caldwell. — Anton Haisler, Rt. 4, Caldwell 77836.

Vajdak Family Reunion

The Vajdak Family Reunion will be held Sunday, June 9th, at the American Legion Hall in Somerville. Each family is asked to bring a basket lunch for the noon meal. — Richard Kovar, Snook, Secy.

August L. Rasch, 83, passed away in Bleiblerville on May 13th. Brother Rasch was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville.

Bush Miteff, 78, passed away in Fort Worth on Ap ril 27th. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Fort Worth.

Gene Miller Wounded in Viet Nam

Eugene E. Miller (better known as "Gene"), son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank S. Miller, 2916 Colonial, Waco, was Wounded in action in Viet Nam. Gene is an HM 3-C in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

He sustained shrapnel wounds from enemy fire while on patrol. He is presently aboard the U.S. Naval Hospital Ship the USS Repose. He has been attached to the First Marine Division in Viet Nam since December. Gene, his sister, Frances, and parents are all members of SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco.

Lodge 84 at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas was the scene of a miscellaneous shower given in honor of Justine Marie Pokladnik, daughter of Bro. and Sister Cyrill Pokladnik, 3784 West Bay Circle, Dallas. Justine Marie will repeat marriage vows with David V. Andreason, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Anderson of Garland on May 30, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Dallas.

• • Jack Dean Hurley, 19, was one of the 85 persons who perished in the recent Braniff Airways plane crash near Dawson. He had just enlisted and was reporting for duty. Young Bro. Ilurley was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 81, Needville. o • Frances Heidaker, 83, passed away in Yoakum on May 12th. Sister Heidaker was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 63, Sweet Borne.

TEXAS A&M NEWS Texas A&M, located in the center of a large Czech-speaking population segment, is doing its share toward instructing students in the Czech language.

An Agr,1V1 Modern Languages Department survey reveals that; 33 of 83 students studying Czech in r . apot ing institutions are at A&M, according to Dr. John M. Skrivanek and Joaeph ,l.

Skrivanek, professor and instriwtor or Slavonic languages.

"Several religious and fraternal organizations in recent years have helped Czech students by establishing scholarship awards for those noading financial aid," noted Dr. Jack A. Dabbs, department head.

The U.S. Official of Education classifies Czech as a critical language.

As a language of convenience for residents of Southeast Central Texas and a language of science for several fields of advanced study, Lhe language "is of great use to Texas students," Dr. John Skrivanek pointed out. One of the nation's largest areas of residents of Czech extraction, the Texas "community" numbers some half million persons, he estimated.

Total enrollment in Czech from reporting colleges and universities shows A&M with 33; University of Texas, Austin, 23; University of California (Berkeley) 15; Harvard; 12; University of Nebraska, 11; Portland State College, 8; University of Chicago, 8; University of Washington, 3; and University of Michigan, 3.

Lodge 88 Splash Day — June 2nd ---SPJST-

Houston, Texas May 20, 1968

Dear Readers, Two weeks and we will be in Dallas to try to make our SPJST better, greater, and especially secure for the future. The by-laws are for us to be guided by and to follow, so let's try to have them simple and applicable to all.

Lodges following the by-laws do have a problem in electing delegates to our conventions. For the small lodges this by-law does not create a problem.

But if we take into consideration lodges with hundreds or more members and the by-law to be followed and by conscientious members are followed. In that case, observing the by-law the members are liable to be confined in the annual convention year meeting till all hours. As of now according to our by-law, we elect delegates by majority vote, which means a greater number than half of the votes cast.

This is quite a task if fifteen or more delegates are to be elected. There is a proposal to elect delegates by plurality vote. This certainly would simplify the procedure and task in electing delegates and alternates since these are elected the same way. Plurality means that the delegates are elected according to votes cast in their favor. For example, if ten members are nominated and only seven delegates are needed, then the seven menthers receiving the

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 highest number of votes will be duly elected.

Our order is rapidly growing and so are the local lodges and electing delegates by plurality vote will be a great help and quite simpe. Therefore, let's see to it and simplify Article '7-a and have delegates elected by plurality vote instead of majority.

With the growth of lodges we will have more members as delegates to represent us at conventions. Several proposals were made concerning the number of delegates a lodge should be entitled to. I never could and never will understand why an active and producing lodge should b.e penalized. I do not believe it is being fair to restrict only the large lodges to a certain number of delegates, regardless of the size of membership. These hard-working lodges that secure the volume growth and contribute more than enough to disburse the expense involved in sending a delegate to the convention. Twenty per cent of each annual premium collected from each lodge may be withheld by the Supreme Lodge for general expenses. If any of you follow the monthly report of our financial secretary, you will realize and find which lodge produces and will cover the expense of the delegate or delegates seated in our conventions. I know, and it is a known fact, that none of the large lodges wish to destroy or do away with small lodges. But these small lodges, since they are not growing, should consolidate with other small lodges and seek representation in conventions or should strive to grow and show at least some advancement in four years. This proposal limiting the large lodges to a certain number of delegates is very unfair to producing lodges. Why penalize them to a certain number regardleSs of the size of membership? I wish to make a small comparison. Lodge 88, during the four-year period, delivered approximately $580,000 in premiums to the Supreme Lodge. Of this the Sup reme Lodge may transfer 20 per cent to the expense account, about $11,600.

Each of the 38 delegates will be compensated for five days and for 540 miles, just about $210, a total of not quite $8,000. These figures are roughly calculated but are not far off.

The number of delegates is not the ruination of our order. Therefore, I do not understand why the large lodges are a target for eliminating delegates.

Article 4-a should be reworked to read:

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 200 additional ;members, one additional delegate. But to limit lodges to five or eigh t delegates as proposed is not fair and not fraternal. Any member devoted in working for his or her lodge: is at the same time ,vvorking for the order and such a member should have the privilege of representing their lodge once every four years. For a devoted hard-working member that is a very small compensation. Brothers and sisters, delegates going to the 20th convention, do weigh the facts and you' will come to the conclusion that the expense involved in sending a dele-gate to the convention is not so great to be compared with the results a grOwing lodge will provide.

Houston, 77018 Dear Members, I always enjoy writing about the happy occasions our members have, but this time I an happy to write about a very pleasant surprise I was given by the youth leaders of our district. With our Youth Leader Marlene Caraway at the head of it and with the coperatjon of the rest of the fine youth leaders and assistants of our district, it had to be a most perfect party — from the white orchid and the lovely gift to the beautifully-set table with napkins engraved "A Toast to Tillie!" It was a lovely farewell party, and I shall always have such pleasant memories of it; I will always e -member the nice compliments you paid me! Thank you!, Marlene Caraway, Doris Knapick, Viola Cox, Regina Osterhaus, Gladys Rita Broz, Louise Knapick and Virginia Wright of Lodge 88; District Youth Director Evelyn Mattes, Josephine Baumann and Bessie Findley of Lodge 146, Helen Bryson of Lodge 81, and Henrietta Veselka of Lodge 142; I was sorry to hear you others couldn't be there.

I also thank your families, the district officers who could come and the others who came including Oscar, Jeannette and Jerome, who helped the youth leaders surprise me!

This is the great weekend I have been writing about, for it is this Sunday that we'have our Splash Day. And what a great day it will be with a barbecue beef dinner served from 11:30

VtSINfK on, and a 'super' Battle Dance from 2 to 10 p.m. We will have three of the most famous polka orchestras: Lee Roy Matocha, Joe Patek and Vrazel's.

The dance will be started by Vrazel, and from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m. all three orchestras will play at one time — 17 fine musicians playing for your enjoyment! If you want to join the many in having fun, all you have to do is come to Lodge 88 this Sunday! There will be special entertainment for your children, and don't forget that YL Marlene Caraway will have two clowns there to entertain your children!

This Saturday you will also have the chance to dance to those great musicians from ,Schulenburg, Herbert Kloesel and his Knights of Dixie! You remember what a crowd Herbert drew when he played here on May 11th; so join the many in dancing to his fine music this Saturday!

Don't forget the Spaghetti Supper this Thursday and the social that follows. The spaghetti will be good — that we can be sure of, and the social will be fun. Parents, you can take your children to the Youth Room where Marlene Caraway and her helpers have special plans for them — making things and planning gamesi NAMES IN THE NEWS: Ann and Gus Urbanovsky celebrated their 20th anniversary at a recent dance, and we wish them many more! Gladys and Tammy Lostak of Danbury also surprised me pleasantly Saturday! Marlene Ca'raway and Regina Osterhaus announce a new project of the junior club, and that is a "Around the World Cookbook"; they hope you will contribute your favorite recipe for this book! Lodge 88 was well-represented at Chuck Schwartzkopf's farewell party at El Campo Radio Station KULP, for Louis Hanus, Harley Cox, Martha and Waldo Kalich, Bob Novosad, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Brosch, Mr. and Mrs. Gill Baca, Keilmit Baca and son Gil, and Mr. and Mrs. John Zemko were all there! Joe Miksch, one of our delegates, told me he highly recommends Brother Leonard Mikeska for our SPJST Treasurer, because he and his relatives have known him for many years. I agree, for I think this young man would make us a fine treasurer!

Bob Hill had charge of the Joe Patek dance where hundreds danced to that famous Patek music! Bessie Findley of Galveston celebrated her birthday at this dance, the orchestra playing a

number in her honor! Josephine and Steve Baumann of Galveston, Helen and Albert Bryson of Richmond, and Evelyn Mattes of Hitchcock enjoyed the Joe Patek music! Middy Gill, daughter of our capable Financial Secretary Ellen Gill and our hardworking Bar Chairman Jack Gill, typed all the names of the members, and that was a great deal of typing for which our Pres. Louis Hanus is quite grateful! Mr. and Mrs. Warnash helped Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bravenec when they had charge of the dance! Food Chairman Annie Vala will appreciate your help on Splash Day and also any pastry donation! Organizers Lillian Finn and Emil Horelica asked me to remind you to bring your donation for their "Country Store"! Elsie and A. J. Dear Friends and Members, As a descendant of the pioneers who settled in Bell County, I wish to compliment Bro. John Stasa for chronicling the history of all those hardy early Czech pioneers who made East Bell County into what it is today. With minor corrections and additions, that is the history of the early Czech pioneers of East Bell County. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have all that in book form? Who is going to• start it? Let's do this while a few of those who remember that era are still living. For those who were the first to make East Bell County and its deep blackland farms the most productive area in the state, we owe graditude. The third generation descendants of these hardy

pioneers can and should somewhere' on that soil erect a marker with all the names of those who made, with endless toil and hardships, a paradise Which we take for granted. Let's think and do something about it.

The twentieth convention of our SPJST is almost here. As delegates, the chartered course for our fraternal society for the ensuing four years depends upon what we do and don't do.

Adding four years to seventy-one makes seventy-five years of our society's existence. Yes, we have made progress, especially in the last few years, but is it all it could be? The progress that was made, how did it come about and why? These are questions every delegate should keep in mind and have an answer for in our next convention.

Yes, we have a su,rplus. Our solvency (almost at 1301 is the best it has ever been and I. cannot see why a member would recommend spending our threemillion surplus. Which is a better sales talk, 99 or 129.9?

Do we need a new home office building, two new rest homes, youth camp, and dividends?

Having the sales talk in mind we cannot have them all at once. The home office is desirable. Dividends?

Yes. Give some of the surplus to those who put it there and you won't hurt your sales talk one bit. Expand our present rest home; it's designed for it.

As for anything else, there will be other conventions. The state of our economy nationally is a good indicator for me to proceed with caution. Let's respect the conservative attitudes of our founders.

Time waits for no man. We are all getting older, and so it is with our Supreme Lodge officers. This unavoidable process of nature has overtaken us. This was a subject of discussion in the by-law committee four years ago.

Brother Pavlicek and I, after discussing the matter with a number of members, decided to do what is in our minds very urgent in consideration of our Society's future. We saw the much desired qualifications for the office of president of our SPJST in a young man in our order, and the liberty was taken by me to place before you delegates and members a young, energetic, self-educated, Czech, (who learned to speak the language even without parents and is not ashamed of it) — A MAN OF CHARACTER. We express our sincere sympathy to the family of Sister Marie Koci, who passed away on May 3, at the age of 83; and to the family of Brother Joe Johnnie, who passed away on May 5, at the age of 53.

L ODGE NO. 66, WACO Dear Readers, On May 19th the Lodge 66 meeting was called to order by President Emil lion us.

Brother Nick Morris then was called

VESTNils. upon for a brief Memorial Day tribute to the men and women who have given their lives so that we may live in a free world. A brief memorial service was then held outside by our service monument.

A moment of silent prayer was then offered for our departed Brother Roman Parma and for Mr. George F. Murray whose son is a member of our Lodge (Tad Murray).

Letters read were: Financial statement of the SPJST; thank-you note from Sister Rose Parma.

The directors reported that they plan to have 40 yards of gravel put on our parking area, and that the grass was mowed.

Sister Libbie Parma reported that the Lodge 66 Youth Club has been on its own for 10 years now. Our youth club is one to be proud of for their outstanding work and for having a District III Miss SPJST candidate, and for their youth poster going to the convention. The youth were recognized.

Parents were encouraged to back Youth Activity Day coming up in June.

A motion was made and seconded that we honor our Lodge 66 Youth Leader by presenting her with a banquet ticket for the 1968 Convention Banquet to be held in Dallas, for all the hard work she has done the past year. It was passed.

Sick members for the month of May were: Ray Moore, Gene Miller who was hurt in Viet Nam, Mrs. Tadlock, and Otto Mates.

All .members are asked to bring casual clothes for our next meeting.

Food, beer. and ice cream will be served, and who knows what will be happening? Don't miss the fun! The birthday cake this month was baked

Fraternally, Jean Spence Secy-Reporter Lodge 88 Splash Day — June 2nd DEAR DIST. III DELEGATES Fellow Delegates: We, the delegates of Lodge 35, Elk, hereby endorse Bro. Rudolph P. Zalman for the position of District III Director.

Bro. Zalman, a member of our lodge for the past 38 years, has distinguished

himself by his leadership and untiring interest in our SPJST. After completing his education at Waco High School, he entered th> service of his country and honorably served for 23 years in the U.S. Navy.

Upon his retirement he returned to his mother lodge and played a vital part in stimulating the healthy climate we now enjoy at our lodge.

We feel he is well qualified for this office, as he has served as vice president, secretary, and is now serving as the financial secretary of our local lodge.

On the district level, he has served as vice president, and president of District III. He is able to speak and read the Czech language. He attended McLennan County Community College, pursuing studies in business management.

He is presently taking a course in business law.

We believe Bro. Zalman will give fair and impartial representation to every member of the Third District.

Members and Friends, This is a little off the record but thought I'd write a few lines.

Last Sunday we had a Senior Citizens' Day and I believe everyone enjoyed themselves, even I — not because I'm that young, but I think I fit in between some place.

Mrs. Vine Moti got a corsage for being the first born and Mr. Joe Zavolanek got a boutonniere for being the first born out of the crowd that was present. Probably there were some there who wouldn't admit to any age.

I don't blame them, I'm beginning to be the same way.

President Johnnie L. Vanicek and helpers have to take the credit for this event that turned out so wil.

The youngsters were maiming the registration desk and I haven't had the opportunity to see who all were present and where from.

Rep. Glenn Johnson was MC and he really could pronounce those tonguetwisting Czech names. I complimented him on this and laughingly asked if he had learned that while he was in Austin. He also told a few jokes that

8 went over big with the crowd if you have a sense of humor.

Mr. Ed Hesse, whom I'm sure everyone knows, played music on our piano and organ. The organ was loaned with the compliments of Bro. and Sis. Tom Mikeska. It is an antique but puts out beautiful music. Thank you, Tom and Bennie.

Mr. Ed Hesse played the piano for the Choral Group of Seaton Star Hall.

We sang three numbers and the youth sang three numbers, accompanied by Sister Viasta Divis on the guitar. Sib, Vlasta Divis and Sic Annie Jakubec sang one number. Everyone got "A" for effort; anyway, the people were real nice and gave us all a good hand.

We also had a tumbling -group from Temple High. School. They were really something. it I did all those beadstands I probably couldn't move for months.

Mr. Jack Lockhart fiddled for us too. I didn't get the gentleman's name who played the guitar with Mr. Lockhart. You can always hear him on Temple's Pioneer Day celebration which will be in June.

I almost forgot to mention that Bro. Butch Sodek's brother came all the way from Dallas to hear him sing. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sodek, Bro. Raymond and Bennie Mikeska, our "Pearl" boy Were a delightful sight.

The chairmen are to be commended on their help. They were really giving service. They had the cap off before you had a chance to fumble for your money.

I made a good deal; I bought a five dollar bill with four ones and four quarters . . . .don't you think?

Bro. Nick Morris and family charmed us with a visit. I know his ears were burning because we all tried to talk to him at the same time. We hope they come again real soon.

Supreme lodge officers were also present, as were some of the other fraternal insurance company officers.

If the headquarters were not located so close to Seaton we might not have the pleasure of their company. I hope to see all you lovely people at the convention, if not sooner.

Don't forget our meeting June 2 at 1:30 and June 30 at 2 p.m.

V ESTNtK Waco, Texas TO ALL DELEGATES TO THE COMING CONVENTION: After reading the Vestnik very carefully these past few weeks I feel that we are beginning to know what some of the major issues will be facing the coming convention.. Many good ideas have been proposed and submitted; others do not have as much merit.

I was interested in Bro. John Kubena's letter of May 22nd in the Vestnik. In that letter, he states ". . . I am sure most of us . . . (meaning members of the Supreme Lodge) support Bro. Urbanovsky for the office of president of the SPJST." That is certainly their privilege, but so what?

In this matter I prefer to use my own judgment as to the qualifications of Candidates, Why should I substitute their feelings and opinions for my own? I wouldn't care if the entire Supreme Lodge was unanimously for Bro. Morris (which they are not) or unanimously for Bro. Urbanovsky (which they are not), I would still prefer using ray own judgment about who to vote for. Thank you, but I'll exercise my own judgment in this matter, and the fact that this or that group or special body feels this way or that way does not influence my thinking one whit — at least, not in this matter.

In reading Bro. G. Louis Kudrna's letter in that same issue, I must agree with him that the presidency is largely a "do-it-yourself kit". I'm glad he put it that way because Bro. Nick Morris is one of the best "do-it-yourself" men that I have ever known! He has had several years of experience in the SPJST and is better equipped than any other officer ever was, regardless of the position they assumed. I happen to believe that one office is just as important as another. How much trial and error can you afford at any level?

These people are humans and make mistakes, and Bro. Morris will be no exception. We just don't happen to share Bro. Kudrna's doubts and skepticism about Bro. Morris' varied abilities. There is infinitely more to the job than just the business end of it, and many of us feel that Brother l'(: g rris is the best all-'round man for the job. It was also interesting that Bro. Kudrna did not state anywhere in his letter who he was for.

We are now in the final days before the convention. Some of the most significant decisions in the history of our Order will be made in this convention.

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 I would like to see all the delegates go to the convention better informed than ever before, and I hope they will judge for themselves what would be best for all the members.

From all the evidence, we will have an energetic leader in Brother Nick Morris as president of our Supreme Lodge. Good luck to the 20th convention!

W. 31st St. Houston '77018 Dear Sisters and Brothers, By various indications, such as talks among members, local lodge and district meetings, one can easily see that there is a lot of interest building up towards important issues, proposals, changes, etc., in the 20th convention, which, of course, is a healthy attitude.

Right or wrong, I am making a few comments of my own.

1) Direct Billing—I think this would definitely hurt our order rather than help be-cause it would tend to separate -our fraternal contact with our members by commercializing our order. It would render our local officers more inactive without responsibility and pride of accomplishment.

Furthermore, in large populated areas, such as Houston for instance, it is hard enough for us locally to keep up with ever-moving members from apartment to apartment. Direct billing may not be able to keep up with theni.

2) Medical Director. Whether he be elected or appointed, I don't think that he or she should be paid for every applicant written.

Most younger applicants are insurable for nominal insurance. Besides, we do have an investigating process in force, and members over 50 years of age are examined by local doctors, so that we are maintaining unnecessary expense following the present system.

Therefore, I think it would be best to appoint a doctor and let him examine for a specified fee only those applicants directed to him by our Supreme Lodge. This might be worth a try.

3) Increase of non-medical $3,000 to $5,000; $5,000 to $10,000; and $10,000 to $15,000 as proposed. Here I would like to caution, and I am even surprised that our medical director did not comment on this proposal since he is so concerned that we might insure some-

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 one for $500 without his consent. After all, if we lose one of the $15,000 it will hurt more than losing a few of the $500 policies. Perhaps I have stirred up the hornets' nest enough.

Fraternally, Mrs. Joe (Vlasta) Machann Directors and Officers of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST I just learned of the plans for the convention concerning the Miss SPJST contest. First, I read in the Vestnik about the plans for the cover of the convention issue. As if that was not enough to dampen my spirits I also learned from Director Ernest Hanka, after pressing for a satisfactory answer, that the plans are for the State Queen to crown the new Miss SPJST. From what I know, that is improper in the first place. The State Queen should -crown the new State Queen (every year), and the Miss SPJST should crown the new Miss SPJST (every four years). These are two separate activities. If the Miss SPJST is unable to attend to this duty, then it should be the first runner-up who takes over.

I was informed that Betty Jo is no longer a "Miss" because she is married and it puts her out. If she had been "Miss America" it would have made no difference. If it does make that much difference to this great organization then it should be made clear in writing on a state basis.

When Betty Jo was crowned Miss MST four years ago, she was given to understand that she would be obligated to come to the next convention to crown the new winner and make a short speech. Everyone said, "We'll see you in four years."

As far as she knows she sincerely believes that the SPJST people stick to their word. She has not been informed of any changes, and as far as I know she may be coming without any further invitation because she was invited four years ago.

VASTNIK If changes are going to be made they should be made at this convention and not in the middle of •the stream.

Here is what really prompted me to write this letter: Last week we went out of town to attend a funeral. When saying goodbye to people from different places, several said, "We'll see you and Betty Jo at the convention, won't we?"

Should I have tried to explain your present plan? When they said Betty Jo they Were referring to her crowning of the new Miss SPJST. 10 wrong by supporting them; it's just hard to decide which one. Both are charmers.

Bro. Bubak had no information about the Czech Festival Day at the fair in October. The big talk now is the convention at the Baker Hotel the week of June 9th, but bold on — immediately after the last delegate has gone home, watch this festival committee generate.

While thinking about action and the convention , what have you done about contacting the kitchen workers and offering your help with a donation of some pastry? A wonderful meal is planned for the Tuesday night dinner for all the delegates of the convention, but home-made pastry is always welcomed. It is a proven fact that some of the best pastry cooks are members of this lodge on Floyd St. Are you one of them? Say! who made that delightful banana cake and also the chocolate cake with a caramel icing served with last Sunday's after-themeeting dinner? They were unlimited in taste. Are you wondering how I managed to get two pieces of dessert, Bro. Gaiser? Well, Randy gave me his!

The Dallas Fraternal Council will hold its next meeting Sept. 10. At that time the hosts are Lodges 25 and 135 and WBFA 402 in Ennis. Mark your calendar. Did Bro. Charlie Adamcik really win the door prize at the last meeting?

Are you planning a big day June 23 at Vickery Park? Well, if it has slipped your mind get the sunclothes laid out for the whole family! It's the annual SPJST Lodge 84 picnic. Don't mention it to the children as yet because they would annoy you to start the "count down." First prize winners attending the "Roaring Twenties" dance and going all out dancing the Charleston were Cheryl Petr and Carl Mandak; 2nd prize went to Virginia Muehlstein, and Bino (that conspicious ball player) Vrana's wife won third. The crowd was in a happy mood and the youth (as well as some of the oldsters) enjoyed seeing their "Mama Bessie" dressed in black with a huge rhineston pendant dazzling; also getting the attention at this same table was Sis. Carlyn Ondrusek in a sleek light blue satin. Oh, brother! Bro. Amos Bartek kept a keen eye on his wife in red, and did you see Susie Nemec, Linda Bartek, and Georgia Reznik? No wonder this era is called "roaring!" Our thanks to our judges, the Joe Kleckas, Jake Currys, and James Janouseks. Bro. Hampton is responsible for the beautiful purses that made two ladies happy during the drawing. We appreciate you, Bro. Bill!

Were you surprised to see Bro. James and Kathy Janousek with their two children at the dance Saturday? Did you notice "Grandpa Otto" amuse Jimmy, and "Grandma Annie" kept content with the company of Joanna.

She later confided that this was their first occasion to attend a real dance; she was referring to the children, not Otto and Annie.

Happiness is moving into a new home, after your 45th birthday! If you don't believe it, just take a good look at Bro. and Sis. Kutil huddled up with friends, explaining details and the fun (and work) they had re-doing and furnishing. No longer will you be able to go to Ennis and after making that curve on Lamar, winding toward the freeway, past that well-known street Loomis, and say, "hey, that's the street Lillie's folks live on! Their brand new address is 5812: Elm Lawn.

Both are still pinching themselves, wondering if this is just a dream.

The convention is drawing near as each day passes. President Ben Jarma, himself a delegate, assured the members that the six from Lodge 84 will, to the best of their ability, work in harmony to bring about a successful convention. Could anyone ask for more?

Fraternally, Rose Scott Ennis, Texas May 24, 1968 Dear Readers, I would like to take a few moments to comment regarding the recent Ennis Polka Festival, After rba cling a recent article in the -Vestnik which stated, in part, that "It's unfortunate the day turned out as it did," I feel compelled to let our readers know that the Ennis Polka Festival was a tremendoes success. Tlae Festival Chairman and b 1,9 committee deserve many words of praise for their work.

It is true that when you have a large number of participants in any program, together with large groups of spectators to contend with, it is hard to keepthe program on schedule. This has happened at various feq f vals and it happened in Ennis. The weather was hot and there was a slight delay in beginning the program.. Consequently, other numbers were delayed, not necessarily too lengthy, The speakers took only a few minutes and then the program began with the Sokol Exhibition with over '10 participants. Next came the :many circles of beseda dancers. The orchestra and Czech Choral group were also heartily received. All Of these groups put in many hours of rehearsal and their efforts were appreciated.

The Saturday morning parade and the afternoon program were only the beginning of the Festival. Saturday night each of the halls -- SPJST, Sokol, KC, and KJT — had dancing, with music by two bands at each hall. Sunclay, the SPJST, Sokol and KJT served dinner and sold pastries. Sunday afternoon all four halls had four bands each to entertain the capacity crowds.

I am sure each of the local organizations is proud of the part it had in the festival and its theme — " A Little Bit of Czechoslovakia in Ennis, Texas." Many months of hard work went into the planning and many, many hours of hard work went into the two days of the festival. It is only through the mutual cooporation of the lodges, their members, the Chamber of Commerce, arid the citizens of Ennis that we were able to accommodate the capacity crowds.

SOKOL HOUSTON June is a popular month and it is also a big month for entertainment at the Falcon Ballroom because we will have two of the most popular bands in the Houston area. One is Joe Patek of Shiner and the other, our biggest seller, Jimmy Brosch. Jimmy will hold a 'special Hawaiian dance, so bring out your favorite colorful shirt and enjoy the atmosphere of Hawaii in the cool, cool, Falcon Ballroom. Spend a oneday vacation in the breezy and beautifully-decorated Hawaiian substitute on June 29 at Sokol. Make your reservations early because already many' have been made for this very special date. We promise that sand, salt, and ocean water will be available.

Another big day in June will be our Father's Day Festival to be held OH Sunday, June 16. It will be a repeat of our most successful Mother's Day affair last month. AS you will remember, we ran out of chairs, but we have ordered mole chairs and we hope to have these by Father's Day. As usual, there will be prizes for the special fathers, delicious barbecue served all day, and a Free dance in the evening.

Remember that day — Father's Day, The plans for the Southern District Sokol competition in July are well cn their way and we have a program that is destined to be the best in our history. Already plans have been initiated for fine food, the best gymnastic program, beautiful costumes, wonderful music and that always congenial Czech atmosphere. There is a busload of Sokols coming to the Slet from Chicago, so this is sure to be a nation-wide meeting place. Plans are also being carried out to complete our housing for all the gymnasts who will be attending the instructors' school to be held at Sokol . Houston for two weeks following the stet. We expect about SO students. The Slet will be held on the weekend of July 27 and 28. More details will follow in future letters.

Currently we are developing data on the Sokol Organization in Houston to be forwarded to Sokol Headquarters for informational purposes and for

VESTNIK availability when needed. We will probably be approaching many of our friends who were closely related to the Sokol .movement in the early dates from 1914 to about 1950. We will be looking for information such as organization dates, membership statistics, any factual data as to organization or reorganization during the depression and war years, military service of our members, and any other data which may be lost if we do not get it now. Very few of the original 1914 Sokols are still with us and in the next decade this information will be lost because not much of it is recorded with any accuracy or factual dates. If you have any knowledge, books, records, trophies or other historical sources that may be in your possession, please let me or any officer of Sokol know about it. This same information is being compiled by other Sokol Units, so if you have any such data of any other unit, please forward it to them.

Emil Kuropata SP.IST Rest Home In Taylor

THE SPJST REST HOME BOARD OF DIRECTORS REPORTS TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE SPJST The Board of Directors of the SPJST Rest Home wish to give our members and friends a resume as to just how the SPJST Rest Home was established.

The SPJST Rest Home was issued a charter by Zollie Steakley, Secretary of State for the State of Texas, on February 6, 1957. Subsequent to its incorporation, the matter of its tax exemption as a charitable and benevolent institution was raised and the Attorney General for the State of Texas, in his original ruling, held that the corporation did not qualify as a tax exempt corporation. Thereafter, the Board of Directors of the SPJST Rest Home presented additional information with a request that the Attorney General reconsider his original opinion; on January 15, 1960, Will Wilson, Attorney General for the State of Texas. issued a ruling that the SPJST Rest Home qualified as a tax exempt institution.

The Attorney General, in his opinion, made it clear that in order for a corporation to qualify as a purely public charitable institution it must (1) not be operated for gain or profit, (2) be wholly benevolent, and (3) benefit persum, indefinite in number, by prevent-

11 ing them, through absolute gratuity, from becoming burdens to the state.

The Board of Directors of the SPJST Rest Home has been vigilant in maintaining the tax exempt status which this corporation enjoys at the present time. This corporation can continue to. enjoy its privilege as a tax exempt corporation only so long as it maintains a separate corporate identity from any other corporation including the Supreme Lodge SPJST which is not a tax exempt corporation. The SPJST Rest Home has a charter and a separate set of by-laws which governs its operations and the election of its directors and officers. The by-laws of this corporation provide that it shall be governed by seven directors "chosen from the members of the SPJST but independent of control by SPJST". Article III further provides that the seven directors shall be "chosen from the membership of the SPJST so as to represent each one of the seven districts of the SPJST." Since its inception the directors of the SPJST Rest Home have been elected by the members of the district which they represent.

There has arisen in District 3 an unfortunate situation wherein two men are contending that they are the duly authorized and elected directors from this district, Bro. Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik was originally elected as a director by the members of District 3 during the year 1960 and commenced his term of office in December, 1960, which was a three-year term. Thereafter, in 1963 he was re-elected for another three-year term to the Board of Directors of the SPJST Rest Home and such term expired on November 30, 1966. No election was held for his successor in the year 1966 and in the spring of 1957 at a meeting of the membership cf District 3, Bro. Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik and Bro. John Kutni were candidates for the position of director of District 3 for the SPJST Rest Home and Bro. John Kutni was elected to the Board of Directors. Bro. Haack questioned the election of Bro. Kutni and the legal advisor of the Supreme Lodge SPJST ruled that the directors of the SPJST Rest Home (a separate and distinct corporation) should be governed by the by-laws of the Supreme Lodge SPJST and such director should be elected by the delegates of the previous convention of the Supreme Lodge SPJST. Subsequent to the ruling by the legal advisor of the Supreme Lodge SPJST, the Board of Director6 of the RList:

12 Home sought advice of other counsel and was advised that we should conduct our affairs in accordance with the charter and by-laws of our corporation in order to avoid the hazard of placing our tax-exempt status in jeopardy. The SPJST Rest Home is not a subsidiary corporation of the Supreme Lodge SPJST and cannot be operated as such if we are to continue to receive favorable tax treatment. The Supreme Lodge SPJST is no a tax-exempt corporation. In view of the foregoing, we have not recognized the election of Bro., Cyril (Sid) Pokladnik. We believe that it is the duty of the Board of Directors of this corporation to maintain its taxexempt status so that all monies which we receive may go to the alleviation of the suffering, sickness, and wants of our more unfortunate guests.

This corporation (SPJST Rest Home) was donated the sum of 100,000.00 by the SPJST convention in Temple, Texas, in 1956 and we subsequently borrowed $50,000.00 at the rate of 5% per annum from the Supreme Lodge SPJST in order to erect a rest home. With these monies and from donations from individuals and lodges, we were able to erect a home in Taylor, Texas, which would accommodate 40 guests. In 1961 it became necessary to build an addition to the home in order to accommodate 14 guests who needed intensive care. This addition was erected at a cost of $64,500.00 at which time we increased our loan with the Supreme Lodge to the total sum of $100,000.00 and we also received additional donations from individuals and lodges throughout the state. Today we owe the Supreme Lodge SPJST $68,000.00 and we are happy to report that we are current with our payments and have paid $2,000.00 in advance on this oblige Hon The Board of Directors has passed a resolution recommending an addition to the home at Taylor, Texas, in order to accommodate 16 additional guests and we have plans to build homes in other areas of the state if the membership expresses a willingness to support our endeavor.

Houston, Texas 1132 Dunbar To The Delegates of the XXth Convention of the SPJST I could go as far back as my childhood to the time when my father practically donated 11/2 acres of land out of the northwest corner of his farm for a site for a building to be the home of Lodge Liberty No. 136.

Therefore, I will not take your time in personal details; however, you can see that as a young boy of approximately eleven years of age, I was connected with the SPJST. It was in 1938 that I came to Houston, and became a member of Lodge Pokrok 88, and became active in some of their Czech plays. Then in 1941, I went to the service and Lodge 88 paid

Wednesday, May 29, 1963 my dues while I was in service, which I appreciated very much.

In the year 1948 I was elected president of the lodge, mainly that I could speak and write Czech and English fluently. I was impressed with the support I had; however, after serving six years as president of the lodge, I felt that I would be doing the lodge a favor by refusing a renomination for the coming year, because I felt that I had became stalemated in my thinking.

The background that I have in the history of the SPJST, having attended five (5) consecutive conventions, and applied myself for election for the position of secretary of the Supreme Lodge at the convention in Houston in 1952, and having entered the race for the presidency of the Supreme Lodge in 1956, and again, in 1964, rather more seriously, I feel that now I am in a position to make a definite statement.

Until this minute of reading my letter there are a number of you that feel I have a personal political ambition, and ax to grind.

Therefore, let me make it clear that the purpose of this letter is nothing personal, and the previous contents, though they may have sounded rather personal, had only one reason, and that purposes was to let you know that I have a broad knowledge of our Fraternal Order, and know quite an amount about its purposes..

I am sincere and feel that I know what I am talking about in a Fraternal Order, that I am very much a part of.

The following are my reasons for this letter: Every member of our SPJST pays dues to the Order equally, and now we see articles in our Herald ("Vestnik") suggesting that we take away their democratic right to :vote at district meetings. If the delegates to this convention allow this to pass they will be doing a VERY unfraternal, undemocratic disservice to the membership.

THROW OUT 68H, since our powers that - be interpreted it in their own way. I suggest: Why have a convention at all, if approXimately 300 delegates at San Antonio decided on the by-laws, and then three or so Supreme Lodge officers interpret them in their own way?

Let me make it clear right now that I will take issue with ANY INDIVIDUAL as long as I feel I am correct until I am proven incorrect. Then, I will be

Wednesday, May 29, 1968 the first to apologize. I understand that the contents of Bro. Valcik's and my letters were quoted as being incorrect

by Bro. Joe B. Hejny at the last District Three Meeting, and that there was no discussion on the tape about Article 68 of our by-laws. Now I wish to ask: How in the name of Great Jehosaphat did my name appear in the Proceedings of the Convention in the Czech version on page 19, and in the English translation on page 39, as having asked for an explanation concerning Article 68 and receiving an explanation? The minutes were signed by all the secretaries to the convention of whom Bro. Frank B. Steiner was chairman. I feel sure that Bro. Steiner would not allow my name to be inserted in the minutes rather promiscuously.

May I state that, if my memory serves me correctly, in the 1956 Convention, we delegates were advised by our Legal Adviser, Bro. August Kacir, that the Rest Home could bear the name `SPJST' and could be subsidized by our Fraternal Order and would have its own charter; also that the ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP have a voice in its PROGRESS. If I am incorrect, I stand to be corrected.

One more item I desire to call to the delegates' attention: too often with the rush of the convention proceedings, the delegates allow things to pass by them without having time to give sufficient thought, as to what is before them.

For instance, in Lodge 88, we have a member who holds three positions: District Organizer, Organizational Committee, and Publication Committee. Do you not think brother and sister delegates, thai:, that is delegating too much of a, burden and also authority to one member, when there are so many others qualified and available?

May 14, 1968 O&A REPORT

In the November 8, 1967 issue of the Vestnik, the O&A Committee recommended the election of four (4) officers to the Supreme Lodge.

Originally we discussed combining the office of treasurer and financial secretary. After many hours of investigation and discussion it was discovered that the combination of the officers

of the secretary and treasurer into a combined secretary-treasurer off ice was a more natural and logical approach to the combining of offices.

On November 28, 1967, we wrote the following letter to Bro. Jos. Koliha, Jr.: • •

We have less than 5 or 10 loans that are delinquent, according to the chart showed us by Bro. Koliha.

The insurance coverage on the property is supposedly on an annual basis, which would require checking of less than 125 per month on the average.

Jos. Koliha, Jr. Treasurer Supreme Lodge, SPJST Temple, Texas Dear Bro. Koliha: At no time have I or the O&A Committee advocated the elimination of the office of treasurer. We are of the opinion that one officer, regardless of title, could oversee and be responsible for both the treasurer's and financial secretary's departments.

Why couldn't one officer handle both departments?

Do you and have you re-calculated the interest due on loans after Bro. Leonard Mikeska has performed this work? If so, how many errors are found in your re-calculations?

You refer to daily decisions regarding collection of delinquent real estate mortgage loans and maintenance of ample insurance protection. Are these made solely by the treasurer or are they made in consultation with other officers? How many real estate mortgage loans do we have and how many are delinquent each month? How often is insurance coverage checked on each loan? Are coverages required to be for one year or not?

We believe that one officer could handle both departments as they now stand. This might necessitate one additional clerk that could handle the clerical work done by you and the financial secretary and give time to one officer so that he could handle the important matters and decisions for both departments.

The only individual and functional job that the treasurer did as seen by the O&A Committee was seeing that the mortgaged property had adequate insurance coverage — and to serve on the Investment Committee. However, we also understand that the directors set the policy on investments.

We are not downgrading or belittling any work that is .done by Bro. Leonard Mikeska. This is necessary work. We are questioning the need to have one officer oversee the work that Leonard performs.

After no reply was received, the O&A Committee met with Bro. Koliha the latter part of December, 1967. We spent over two hours going into all the detail work of that office. This is where we found out that basically all of the work done by the treasurer has already been performed either by the secretary, financial secretary's department, president or legal adviser.

We are not referring to the work done 'by Bro. Leonard Mikeska, but by the treasurer.

Other than outlining the detail work performed by Leonard and the treasurer taking out insurance on the mortgage property in the few instances that the mortgagee fails to do so, the treasurer made a very interesting comment. In this comment is the reason that he will battle to retain five officers in the Supreme Lodge. He stated that he had in so many words promised a shot at the treasurer's job to Leonard. He further stated, "I think we should guarantee an officer's position for Leonard Mikeska or Jerry Mikulas or whoever might be working in their current positions." This is very noble but not particularly practical and both of these young men are capable of stepping up to become an officer but this does not mean that it has to be just as a treasurer or financial secretary, or ony other specified office .We still would have the president, vice-president, and secretary capacities, other than the one mentioned above.

The O&A Committee is still advocating the election of four officers as follows: Preresident Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer Financial Secretary At one time we had considerable backing in this, but as we get closer to convention time, a lot of the backing has run because of the fear of a floor fight or politicking for votes, even though these ex-backers probably feel that this would be a good move.

A few clays ago, I ran across a book of trading stamps donated by one of our nice members and I don't believe I have ever acknowledged our thanks.

These were given to us by Mrs. Frances Olexa, and I want her to know we really appreciate her thoughtfulness.

I am sorry this book was buried under a pile of loose stamps and it was late being acknowledged. Our stamp drive is still going on so any old stamps you don't need will certainly be appreciated.

The youth leaders and officers of District 5 had the pleasure of honoring Mrs. Tillie Helmcamo with a surprise reception Saturday, May 18. I believe we really "put one over" on Tillie because she was (mite surprised. I

would like to thank all the people who worked so hard and contributed to the success of the reception. It is regretted that some of 'the youth leaders and officers were unable to attend, but a convenient time for everyone is hard to find. This party was such a surprise that we didn't even let Oscar Helmcamp in on it until the night before.

No youth club meeting this Sunday due to Splash Day falling on the same Sunday as our regular meeting day.

The youth meetings will be held Monday ; June 17, at 7:30 p.m. The Juniors will meet in the Youth Room and the teens will meet in the dining room.

Lodge 88 YAD eliminations will be Sunday, June 23, in the ballroom at 3:30 pan. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. You MUST register to be qualified to compete. There will be no craft judging since all crafts will be eligible to enter the District YAD but you are to bring them, register, and display them throughout the YAD program. This gives you about three more weeks to work on your talent and/or crafts. Get busy and let's have some good things entered from 88.

Don't forget Splash Day and our "Crazy Carnival." In order for this to be a success, WE NEED YOU! Chuck has been with KULP since 1949, but will be with the Electric Co-Op as of June 1st. We, will miss him at the station, but I know he will also be helping us on his new job.

The club sang a few numbers, and Jimmie Fucik, our teenage point winner last year, has a polka band of his own and I must say they are good.

They have a nice future ahead of them.

I saw the "Laterna Magiaa" and I must say, I enjoyed it very much and when you go be sure and don't miss it. Don't the Texan Institute of Culture and the US Thea.tie, where you, will see the beginning history of our state of Texas and the USA. Above all, don't miss the Tower of the Americas, and too many more to mention.

Sister Wilma Nesuda, our District HI Youth Director, spoke on .YAD and urged us to plan to enter the Arts and Crafts and the Talent contests.

I would like to congratulate the designers and builders of the SPJST Lodge 25 float that W011 1st prize in the Polka, Festival Parade. Last year's queen, Sharon Trojacek and Duchess Cynthia Haskovec were beautiful riding the winning float. Lillie and Bob Trojacek and Ann and Ernest Baskovec were in charge of the float and did a great job.

I surely would like to thank all the youth who helped at the cold drink stand, serving dinner, clearing the hall, etc. at the Polka Festival last weekend.

It took each and everyone working together like this to make it the big success that it was.

We are so grateful Our new business involved selecting the candidates to represent our lodge at the youth Achievement Day, June 30 at Lodge 25, Ennis.

A date was also set for our annual g raduation party and dance for all the graduates, class of '68, in all schools for both the teen and junior clubs. Members of the lodge are once again reminded and invited to be sure and remember the date — Friday, May 31, at 8 p.m. All the honorees are asked to bring their dates and invite all your friends whom you wish to have with

The parents are also invited and are asked to help out the youth leaders with the refreshments by bringing or sending salads, sandwiches, of their choice, or sweets, such as cookies and cakes.

Our next club meetings will be held Sunday, June 2nd, at 2:30. All officers and members are urged to be sure and be present. We will have a lot of "wrap ;up" business. This will also be our first of the youth year meetings to begin on our contest. All of last year's point sheets must be sent in by June 10 to the State Youth Director. This year's contest ends May 31st, so be sure and have all your sheets with you when you, some to the meetin g Sunday , Jude 2.

The lodge will also have their regular meeting at 3 p.m. Lunch will be served as usual, and all sisters are reminded to bring food of their choice.

Dear Members and Readers, On May 10 we held our meetings and they were well attened. After the Adult meeting we held Our youth meetling in the absence of our vice president. There was no old or new business.

Mrs. Elsie Brdecka and her family visited us. Mrs. Brdecka spoke to us.

After the meetings the youth had a few games prepared by Marcie Lee Holy and Vernell Zak. The ladies had games, too. Then we drew for door prizes. Mr. Brdecka and Sandra Holy were the winners, and Jeannie Zak was the winner of a cake for the month of May. Lunch and refreshments were served.

Our next meeting will be the first Sunday in June with a short program for mothers and fathers. Lunch will be served. Don't forget!

Some of the girls made cute invitations with a teapot designed on the front. Some of them made beautiful corsages out of pink roses for the mothers and twelve small ones for the hostesses. On the Saturday of the tea, some girls wore' long -formals. They pinned corsages on the mothers, served them coffee, punch, and cookies. Toward the end of the meeting, some of the girls presented entertainment. The tea was very enjoyable.

Lrotier was, born in and came to Waco as he he had lived all his life.

He had worked for Mallander and Company until 1931, after which he established his own cabinet shop which 110 operated with his death. Bro. Parma was a master wood craftsman and specialized in duplicating rare furniture.

Among his many accomplishments was the duplication of a chair once owned by the groat poet, Robert Browning, for the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University.

Bro. Parma was one of the inost faithful members of our lodge, loved by everyone with whom he came in to contact; never too busy to lend a helping hand and me kind word whenever it was needed. He will be missed from our midst for a long time to come.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace, and again our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

Iiamusek was a 50-year member of the SI7JST and took all active part in plays and other activity. He was also an active member of the Sokol organization.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge No. 153, Pokrok Bennview, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, ANNIE BOSAK, who passed away April 25th in the Citizen's Memorial Hospital in Victoria, Texas, at the age of 66.

Funeral services were held April 27th from the Slavik Funeral Home in Edna, Texas, and later from the Rosenberg Brethren Church in Rosenberg. Rev. George Crofoot, Jr. and Rev. H. S. Beseda officiated. Interment was in the WOW Cemetery in Rosenberg.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alta Lee Gerik of Kingsville; two brothers, Joe Elles, Sr., of La Salle, and Steve Elles of Newark, N. J.; two sisters, Mrs. Bennie Krcha of Rosenberg, and Mrs. Winnie Kucera of Needville; 3 grandchildren, Mrs. Pat Richter of Kingsville, Mrs. Peggy Monnet of San Antonio, and Mrs. Linda Casey of Houston; two great grandchildren.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Svaz Cechoslovanu No. 92, Fort Worth, in behalf of our members, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother,

who met with tragic death, along with 84 other passengers in a plane crash at Dawson, Texas, Friday, May 3. He had been inducted into the Air Force on Friday morning, and was enroute to Amarillo for basic training. He was 18 years old.

Funeral services were held in the Garmany and Company Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg on Wednesday, May 8, with Rev. Mike McMahon and Rev. Paul Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Modena Cemetery near Beasley.

JOE H. JOHNNIE, who passed away, at the age of 53 on Sunday, May 5, 1968.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, at Azle 'Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. W. E. Flory, officiating.

T. Meyer, all of Beasley. His father passed• away when he was 131/2 years old.

Jackie, as he was known to everyone, was born in Houston on July 1, 1949.

He was a graduate of Lamar High School in Rosenberg, and, was employed with Gulf State Tube Corp. at Rosenberg before entering the service. While attending high school he worked after school hours, and during the summer.

Jackie joined SPJST Lodge No. 81 on April 7, 1966, and was an active member of the youth club until he was employed full time and was unable to attend the youth meetings. In 1966, he won second place in the king contest, held at Lodge 88 in Houston.

The news of Jackie's sudden death was a great shock and sorrow to everyone who knew him. However, his family must feel a great deal of consolation, because lie was a young man of many fine qualities and a true Christian.

May his soul rest in peace and Eternal Light shine upon him.

Bro. Pavlicek was born May 27th, 1874, in Fayetteville, Texas, and was a retired farmer. He had resided in Baylor County the past 60 years and was a member of SPJST for 67 years.

He married Miss Emilie Zapalac April 17, 1901, in South Texas. Bro. Pavlicek was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. Burial was in the Bomarton Catholic Cemetery, under the direction of Eiliston Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Griffin, OMI, officiating.

Survivors include his wife; two sons,
