FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK MAY 12th — MOTHER'S DAY We will be celebrating Mother's Day this year on Sunday, May 12th. This is a day that should be filled to overflowing with love and affection for our dear mothers.

Those of us who are still fortunate to have our mothers, let us set this Sunday aside as HER day. Spend at least a part of the day with her if at all possible. You may not have many more opportunities to be with her and especially on Mother's Day. She will appreciate more than any gift the fact that she has seen you. For those of you who cannot be • with her in person, remember that your mother will appreciate a letter, a telegram or the joy of hearing your voice. Everything that we are, have been, or hope to be we owe to our mother and all she asks in return is that we be good and honorable citizens. Small repayment, indeed.

Do not overlook this opportunity to honor your mother.

This most beautiful holiday falls on the second Sunday in May. It is dedicated to those who gave us life. Everyone who has feeling in his heart remembers and honors his mother. It was she who brought smiles, love and sacrifice to her children; even if these disappointed her repeatedly. With pride in her eyes and a prayer on her lips she followed their every little step.

For every fault and failing of theirs she had an excuse. In every act she saw something good, even when the act wounded her loving heart. She hopefully looked to improvement and reformation. On many a sleepless night she pressed her head into the pillow so that her Weeping at disappointments would not awaken her dear ones. Yet she continued to hope and love.

Mother's DP :: a.J established so that all of us might realize the full meaning and significance of motherhood and give it the love, respect and reverence which it deserves. It was intended to bring to mothers the joy and gratitude which rightfully belongs to them. For ages they have endured suffering and sorrow, in order to promote and preserve life.

Wednesday, May 8, 1968 Words are futile in expressing gratitude. The deeds and lives of children manifest the love they have for their mother. If children are in a place distant from the home of their parents, they should be urged to write to their mother. If they have lost their mother through death, they should decorate the mother's grave with flowers. If they are blessed with a mother who is still living, they should present her with flowers and gifts to show their gratitude. They should visit her and show their appreciation and love.

Let's make the second Sunday in May a real holiday for our mothers.

Newsbri fs Mrs. Charles (Mary) Mikes, Sr., 73, passed away in the Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner on April 25th.

Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery near Shiner. Sister Mikes was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 45, Shiner.

Frank B. Maresh, 72, passed away in Hempstead on April 1 fit h. Burial was in the Nelsonville Brethren Cemetery.

Brother Marcsh was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville.

Edwin M. Grimes, 78, passed away in a Taylor hospital on April 20th. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Brother Grimes was a member of Lodge No. 20, Granger.

Burial was in Salem. Lutheran Church Cemetery in Welcome. Brother Warmke was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 33, Bleiblerville.

Balcar Family Reunion The Balcar Family Reunion will be held Sunday, June 2nd in the SPJST Hall in Dime Box. Lunch at 12:30 p. m.

MR. AND MRS. JOE F. VALCHAR

The couple married in 1911, They joined the SPJST lodge in Weimar in 1919 (Lodge No. 8). They later belonged to Hilije Lodge No. 40, and now belong to El Campo Lodge No. 50. They raised six children, and have 16 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

His mother is the former Alena Ondricek; grandparents are Stanley and Lillie Ondricek, and great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. August Stavinoha, all members of the SPJST.

Fraternally, Edna Urbanic PLACED() LODGE NO. 97 Dear Members, This is to remind you members that we have the XXth convention coming up in June and that's right around the corner.

We have just one more meeting to discuss the recommendations that are proposed to the delegates before' the convention. I urge the members to be present at our next meeting and let us know your opinion, so the delegates would know if you members approve of some of the recommendations, which the committee has proposed.

If the members don't come and speak at our next and last meeting before the convention, after the convention will be too late.

The by-law committee has one recommendation proposed which, if it passes, deals with direct billing to the local lodges. The small lodges that are inactive and have a small attendance, no youth clubs and no organizer, will have to disband because some members do come to our meetings to pay their dues. And if it passes, then they won't come to the meeting. We still do meet 9 and some times 10 times a year.

We donate to good causes, visit the sick, and try to help in any way we can.

I guess all that isn't too much but every little bit helps. So wake up members and surprise us at our next meeting — it's May the 13th at the Ed Isaros residence at 8 p. m., new time.

VI STNf K the next couple of months. She and her parents are very busy remodeling Slovacek's Ballroom and getting it ready for Mother's Day, May 12th, when they will have their opening.

Festivities will start at 1 p.m., with entertainment all afternoon. Supper will be served, and a free dance will follow. The Sweet Home Youth Club will operate a concession stand at this opening. The Slovacek Ballroom is the center of all our Lodge 63 meetings and activities. Eivery third Sunday is especially reserved for our SPJST functions, both adult and youth. Mr. and Mrs. Slovacek and daughter, Irene, want to invite all Supreme Lodge officers and their wives, Editor Morris and his family, and all SPJST lodges throughout the state and their friends to come out to the opening of Slovacek's Ballroom on May 12th, Mother's Day. The meeting adjourned until the third Sunday in May, May 19th, at 1:30 p.m. Members, be sure and let your member friends know about this special date of May 19th: door prize, free keg beer, sandwiches, and hot dogs sold by the youth. LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Dear Members and Readers, Our April meeting was held on April 21st, due to Easter falling on the regular meeting day.

The meeting was called to order by our president, Mrs. Elizabeth Bielefield.

The members, led by the youth, said the Fledge of Allegiance.

We had an Easter egg hunt for the children present, but due to the bad weather we did not have good attendance. Winning the prizes were Wendy Bayer and Don Irma, 1st; Dianne Sralla and Ricky Bauman, 2nd.

I would hke to thank all the members who did such a nice job of cleaning the hall, covering the tables, and making the repairs that needed to be done on the hall before the district meeting; also those who made our district meeting a success. One person cannot do it; it takes all of us.

We want to thank everyone who attended the district meeting and hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Cur May meeting date has been changed to the 19th of May because of Mother's Day fallihg on the 2nd Sunday. Hope to see everyone there.

Fraternally, Polly Bayer, Reporter —spJsTRt. 3, Box 288 Shiner, Texas Dear Vestnik Editor, I promised to give you more information on the Czech show at the Bemis-Fair and since our son and his wife saw the show as guests of the gentleman we had over for a visit here a while back I am now in a better position to tell you more about it.

The show, "Laterna Magika," is a combination of live actors and film.

Our son was very highly impressed with the show, It is very -cleverly projected. I have never seen our boy so' impressed with entertfrinment as he is with the Czech show. They have the shows start on the hour and they last 40 minutes. It is a very good idea to get seated 15 minutes before the start of a show since they have beautiful Czech music with Czech lyrics. The tunes are of many American standard songs.

Seats are best clown the middle and not too close to the front.

Before I sign off, I want to state that none of the above information I gave you was on request of the Czech people Who are putting on the show; it is just my desire to help the readers of the Vestnik get the most out of the shoW. I want to take this apportunity, on behalf of all the parents and children, to thank Sister Frances Novotny, youth leader, for the great time we had at the family picnic and Easter egg hunt. Lots of prize eggs were found. Everyone went home tired, but full, wondering when we could get together again for another outing.

We want to congratulate all the candidates who participated in the Miss SFJST contest. They were all lovely. Had I been a judge it would have been very bard to choose a winner. Congratulations to the winner, Beverly Gaidusek. Aso thank you, Teresa Vrla, for representing our lodge.

Don't forget our next meeting will be held June 2.

Dear Members, I surely have enjoyed the letters urging you, Brother Nick Morris, to run for president of our great fraternal order, and I do hope you are considering it seriously. We surely need a great leader like you, Brother Morris, so don't disappoint ,us!

Hundreds of guests enjoyed dancing to the music of Fayetteville's trophy-winning Lee Roy Matocha! Lee Roy and his musicians were especially good, and I heard many comments on his good music and his large variety of polkas, waltzes and modern music which pleased young and old.

Never underestimate the power of Lee Roy! Our well-made plans of leaving for Weimar eaturday, to take our mother, who was anxious to get back there, were, suddenly changed when Mother heard that Lee Roy would play at our lodge. We were so happy to hear Lee Roy announce that they would play "U Studanky" for "Grandma Krejci, the Pride and Joy of Weimar." Thank you, Lee Roy; Viola and I will always remember your thoughtfulness. All you faithful followers of Lee Roy, don't forget that he will play at our Chandelier Ballroom this Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be a beer bust from 7 to 8 p.m. — all the beer you can drink!

We also have another great musician at our lodge this Weekend, and that is Herbert Kloesel and his famous Knights of Dixie of Schulenburg. Do get your friends together and come

5 enjoy dancing to Herbert's fine music this Saturday!

I hope you have circled Sunday, June 2nd, on your calendar, for that will be another great day for Lodge 88 — Splash Day! A good barbecued beef dinner will be served from noon on. And just listen to this: three great bands will play for a dance that will start at Z p.m. You will be able to enjoy the music of Lee Roy Matocha, Joe Patek and Vrazel Polka Band!

There will also be special entertainment for your children, and of course, swimming in one of the finest pools in Houston!

Once again, we will have the chance to eat some good (and I mean very good) stew, which will be served this Thursday. They also serve hamburgers, so you do have a choice.

Youth Leader Marlene Caraway and her helpers will entertain your children while you are at the social; have you seen the beautiful things they niake? I would also like to state that the audience at our spring District II meeting was the quietest of any that I can remember, so let's keep this up, and when someone is talking let us please listen as we should.

A special thanks to Lodge 48 for their fine hospitality, for the delicious supper they prepared; also that the bar was closed during our meeting which helped us very much to have a quiet meeting.

Our next item of interest for District II will be Youth Achievement Day, which will be held on July 7th, at Seaton Star hall. More on this later.

The 20th Convention is exactly a month away and many items of great

importance will have to be decided by the delegates. I hope that every delegate has studied the proposals of the By-Law Committee and also the proposals that your own lodge sent in to the By-Law Committee. You may bring these up at the convention, even if they were not approved by the By-Law Committee.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the convention and am wishing the 20th Convention great success.

Fraternally, Frank Klinkovsky, President, District II LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTH Dear Members: The next regular meeting of Lodge Svaz Cechoslovanu No. 92 will be held on Sunday, May 12. This meeting will begin at 1 p.m. because we will have a Mother's and Father's program after the meeting.

We would like to have all the children who are on the program to be present at 3:30 p.m. The oldest mother and father, and the youngest mother and father will be honored at this program.

Supper will be served as usual after the program. The sisters are asked to please bring pastry.

The youth club will have a business meeting, and will sponsor a bake sale after the program.

Get-well wishes to Brother Joe Johnnie, who is in St. Joseph's Hospital, and to Sister Juanita Johnnie, who is at home after several days in St. Joseph's Hospital.

We are grateful to all the members for attending the lodge meetings. We have had wonderful attendance this year and we hope you will continue to come and invite or bring a member with you.

It was good to see many of our members who have been absent from the lodge meetings and we're looking forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.

SIX SIMPLE STEPS (For Organizers)

(Editor's Note: This is the last in a series of six articles on the subject of life insurance sales, taken from an address by Mr. Alan F. Tcllinghuisen, agency manager of a Wisconsin fraternal society, delivered recently in that state. I think they are quite appropriate and good).

CLOSE - PART II If you get an objection that you can't answer, stall for time. I read an article about an agent who went on a call-back, and the prospect met him. at the door and said, "I think the plan you have shown me is good and exactly what I need and I can afford it."

The agent thought, "I've got a sale," but the prospect said, "My brother-inlaw just went into the business last week and I think I should buy it from him."

This is a tough objection to overcome, isn't it? The agent didn't know what to say so he stalled for time by asking for a glass of water. As he was sipping the water he was thinking, thinking, then the agent asked, "Where does your brother-in-law live?" The prospect: "Minnesota." Agent: "How far from here?" Prospect: "350 miles."

Agent: "Oh, how long has he been in the business?" The prospect said "Two weeks." All this time the agent was drinking the water and stalling for time. Then it came to him.

The agent said, "Question: would you expect your doctor to drive 350 miles to make a house call? Would you expect your lawyer to drive 350 miles to witness some papers for you? Don't you think it's rather ridiculous to expect your brother-in-law to drive 350 miles to serve your policy?" I know your brother-in-law will do real well in this business, there are many people in that area who will need his services too. It doesn't make any difference to me whether you buy from me or him, but I would like to be your agent."

He got the sale. There are many things you can do, but I believe in keeping them simple. That's why I call these the Six linple Steps.

I'm sure you have heard "I want to wait; I want to think about it." If you haven't you haven't been a salesman very long. What do you do when a man says he wants to think about it?

Say to him, "That's fine. That shows me you are interested or you wouldn't want to think about it. But can you tell

Is it the plan? The society? The premium? Or is it me? What is it?"

As a last resort I 'may use a tape measure. All of you have seen a tape measure before. I'll pull this thing out of my pocket; I act like everything is lost, I'm going to give up. I've closed my rate book, the application is still lying on the table, I have picked up the brochure because he's going to wait. He's going to think about it. I start playing with this tape measure.

"Do you know what this is?" I'll ask.

"It's a 72-inch tape measure. It's kind of ironic; not only will this tape measure measure my height, it will measure my reach and it also measures my life expectancy. Now I know that at age 65 my earning power is going to stop.

In fact at age 55 it is going to be . reduced about 55 per cent (each time you tear the tap off at the given number).

Now when I spent the first 18 years in school, of course, I didn't save any money then. Now I'm 36 and I haven't saved much money yet. Well, I may have 20 years to save for myself but I may have only 20 days to save for my family. Fellow, put your name here and see if you can get this."

If that doesn't do it, forget him — because that might be all we've got.

Some of us who are here today may not make it home tonight. I'm sure that some of the people who died of heart attacks yesterday didn't expect it. I'm sure the people who died last week in automobile accidents didn't expect that to happen either. We're in a business today that is too serious to get a prospect to see his problems and not do the things that are necessary to help him take care of them.

You know, if you are going to walk out the first time he says No, and not do everything in your power to get him to take action, when you' know he needs it and can afford it, you haven't helped him one bit. You might just as well have stayed home. It doesn't do one bit of good to bring a plate of food to a starving man and not give it to him. He would have been just as well off if he hadn't seen it to begin with.

So many fellows concentrate on the close and when they don't get the sale they say they have to brush up and do better on their closings. They say, "That's my weak spot; help me."

I'll tell you how to close him. Follow these six simple steps and you won't have half as much trouble. Don't try to skip any of the steps; if you do, you're

Keep them in order and keep the prospect coming. It's so simple, there is nothing to it. This is what I feel, and this is what I believe. There's no secret to this business. It's just a matter of discipline and disciplining yourself.

SPRiNCTIME, IN PRAGUE MEANS MUSIC Spring is a lovely season in Bohemia and May in Prague is a music-lover's dream.

From May 12 through June 4, worldfamous orchestras, smaller groups, and soloists will perform in Prague's historic buildings — St. Vitus and St. Jacques Cathedrals, St. George's Basilica, Clementin urn-Mirror Hall, Bethlehem Chapel, Smetana, Hall, Bertramka Museum, House of Artists, and the Museum of National Literature, among others.

During the festival, 54 concerts will be given by 13 different symphony orchestras and chamber music groups.

Concerts also will be given by soloists Emil Gilels, Julian Bream, Gina Bachauer, Jess Thomas, Ida Haendel, and Hyman Bress.

Conveniently, the concerts take place afternoons and evenings; one needs mornings to discover the startling beauties of this city of bridges, monuments, spires, and towers in Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Inevitably neglected during the war, these buildings rapidly are being brought back to their original splendor. During a performance one may enjoy the architecture of the hall as much as the music.

One building to delight concertgoers is the Clementinum. Its ceiling and wall murals, chapel of mirrors, astronomical museum, library of old manuscripts, must be seen to be believed.

Concerts are frequently given in the Bertramka MuseuM, the villa where Mozart wrote "Don Giovanni." The Bethlehem Chapel where John Hes preached in 1402 was reconstructed by the state in 1952 and is used for concerts.

Hradcany Castle (the seat of government in Bohemia for a thousand years) can occupy all of one's leisure time. St. Vitus Cathedral took 600 years to build but is now one of the city's most magnificent attractions. The nave and 16 chapels are illuminated by brilliant stained glass and hold priceless works of arts.

St. Wenceslaus Chapel, from which one enters the crown jewel room, is the renovated castle's most visited buildig. But the entire complex is made fabulous by paved courtyards, several

churches, palaces, museums, art galleries, statuary, parks, and the Golden Lane of tiny shops The House of Czechoslovak Children is here, too. Formerly the Burgrave's palace, the building is dedicated to the interests of children 6 to 15. Adults are not admitted except as guests of the children on special occasions.

The house is decorated with murals and mosaics, furnished to fit small people, equipped with puppets, theaters, films, toys, games, books to satisfy growing minds, and apparatus for exploring the wonders of nature.

Young tourists are welcomed and entertained by their young hosts.

If one still has time to spare, Prague offers 12 adult and 4 children's theaters, 8 "experimental stages" for satire and musicials, 32 ,museums, 15 galleries, 8 concert halls, 7 cabarets, 10 nightclubs, 6•cafes with dance floors, and 69 cinemas, plus sports halls and indoor stadia. Coach tours will take one through the rolling, tree-crowned countryside to preserved medieval towns and castles.

There are several positions that need to be filled for this camp. They are: horsemanship director, asst. horsemanship director, wrangler, waterfront director, asst. waterfront director, archery director, and nurse. The length of employment will be for the duration of the camp, with the following benefits: 1. One day off — Aug. 4th, 2. Meals, lodging, and insurance 3. Unlike the nine classes held in the fall, one in each district and two in different parts of Districts 3 and 7, these were located to enable several districts to meet at one time based on a survey taken at the 1967 fall youth leader seminars. The primary reason for this change Was to present several programing activities that could only be successfully taught in larger groups.

I want to thank these directors, leaders, assistants and interested adults for taking time from their busy schedules to attend these training sessions.

Mrs. Mary Valchar of Lodge 133 San Antonio in District 7 was unable to attend due to her husband and driver having surgery. From District 6, Mrs. Martha Sembera of Lodge 153 La Salle was unable to attend due to her antomobile being in the repair shop and no other transportation was available.

From District 3, Mrs. Wilma Nesuda, District Youth Director, was unable to attend due to a conflict in dates and a vacation trip to Mexico. Mrs. Libbie Parma was unable to attend due to a funeral of a close relative, Mrs. Patricia Slovak was unable to attend due to working because of the telephone strike, and Mrs. Doris Jurica, who is expecting a baby any day now, was also unable to attend. These leaders and assistants, as well as all our other leaders and assistants who were unable to attend, were certainly missed.

Both classes were very helpful and beneficial and I believe that the leaders have some new ideas as well as some new approaches to some old ideas to take back to help build bigger and better clubs and provide new interests and benefits for our youth membership.

In addition to each training class, which included sessions in game leadership, game selection, game adaption, simple party decorations, easy skit preparation and development, sports, folk-dance games, craft demonstrations, square dancing, sing-song leading and selection, ritual or ceremonial development, and program preparation and evaluation, there was a seminar at which the changes in the 1968-69 youth program were distributed and noted in the leaders' red rule manual.

Additional material for the Happy Harmony, Crafts, and Game Craft booklets were distributed, as well as filling the orders of all of the material and supplies the leaders will need in the new youth year ahead.

These supplies were counted out and filled by my wife Kathy, who placed them into packets along with the new program booklets of Skits and Stunts, Indoor and Outdoor Games, and Czech

11 Dances, while the leaders, assistants, and adult guests were participating in the training class. In this way, no precious training time was lost.

I am indebted to the management of Slovacek's Ballroom, the adopted home of Lodge 63, for furnishing us their facilities free of charge as well as the free refreshments and tasty noon meal which was provided to all present by Lodge 63. I am also grateful to Lodge 66 for the free use of Linden Hall. I wish to note that Lodge 66 was also to have furnished refreshments and a meal, but due to the death and funeral of Brother Roman Parma, a very active and contributing member of the lodge, the arrangements understandably had to be changed. To the family of Brother Parma, please accept our prayers and sympathy.

In addition to the leaders getting new ideas and developing new skills, each had a chance to become better acquainted with the members of the other districts, and thereby making us a closer knit SPJST family.

Although plans are already under way for future training classes, camp preparation meetings will be held shortly in order to make this year's camps the most outstanding and beneficial. The date of this meeting in your district is in the Youth Activity Calendar. It is very important that every leader and assistant present the part of the camp program which they have prepared. If for some reason, you are unable to be present to present your program, please mail it to your district youth director in advance of the meeting so that all phases of camp can be properly prepared. If you need additional material or reference to complete your presentation, please let me know and I'll gladly help in any way I can.

In closing, I'd once again like to thank all the people who attended the training classes and hope they benefited and enjoyed them as much as I did, as well as special thanks to Lodge 63 and 66 for their hospitality and to all of those who were unable to attend, we missed you very much. DISTRICT 6 Dear Members and Friends, The weeks go by so fast that one can't do very much.

There is a lot of work to be done on the farm at this time of the year.

The districts' seminar held on April 20th at Slovacek's Ballroom in Sweet Home was a success. Thanks to the Slovaceks for letting us use their ballroom, and thanks to Sweet Home Lodge 63 for giving us a free dinner It really was good, and we certainly did appreciate it.

District 6 will have its camp meeting on May 15th at 2 p. m. (Wednesday) at Mrs. Holmes' home in Hungerford.

So please, all you youth leaders and assistants, try to come. Also come prepared with whatever you signed for crafts, some for games, outdoor games nature study, etc. James will be with us to help each one of you. If time permits, we will also work out our program and the menu while at camp.

Fraternally, Amelia Pokorny Youth Leader —SPJSTLODGE NO. 117, ROBSTOWN Dear Readers: Our regular monthly meeting of the youth club was held at my home on April 27 at 3 p.m. Mrs. Victor Janak, well-known in our area for her beautifully-decorated cakes, gave a demonstration on decorating a cake for Mother's Day. The decorations were made of snipped marshmallows and gumdrops, and members helped with the final touches. Our heartfelt thanks, Mrs. Janak, for an interesting and "delicious" program. Guess what we had for refreshments! It sure went good with that ice cream!

After the meeting conducted by the president, David Hincir, the club divided into three age groups and en-

joyed 45 minutes of games. Winners in the Communicator riddle and question contest were: Under 10 — Diane Pattillo; Over 10 Rose Anne Mraz.ek.

Prizes were awarded.

The members were encouraged to sign up for various offices and committees they would like to serve on next year. The nominating committee, composed , of outgoing officers, will meet the third Saturday to draw up a slate of officers to present at our next meeting on May 25. Following the meeting the club will be host to the FloresTulle Youth Club at a swim party and wiener roast on Padre Island.

'The youth clubs will participate in this event by providing a "carnival" for the youngsters (and oldsters). We will have about eight different games to play and plenty of prizes and surprises.

VESTNiK LODGE NO. 153, LA SALLE Dear Readers, Last Sunday our youth club had the honor of attending the Underwriters' Dinner at the La Salle Hall. It was with much pleasure that twenty-two members of our club were able to take part at this special event.

We are grateful to Brother Krause for giving us the pleasure of entertaining at the dinner and the privilege of active participation at this memorable occasion; also for the opportttnity of sharing in the brotherhood of the dignitaries of our district. We thank you!

We think we have a fine group of youngsters in our club. They have the desire to be active. We value the outstanding work of the SPJST and the wonderful opportunities it is giving us.

NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Members and Readers, On Sunday, April 21, we held our regular adult and youth meetings, opened by President Erwin Holy. The minutes were read and approved. Old and new business were discussed. The meeting adjourned and the youth held their meeting. After the meeting the children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt.

Refreshments and lunch were served.

The door prizes went to Sandra Holy and John Holly, and the birthday cake for April went to Mrs. Chas. Galetka.

Our next meetings will be this coming Friday night, May 10th, in the Grant Building at the Recreation Park, since it's Mother's Day on the second Sunday. Looks like every Sunday is taken up, so don't forget Friday night, May 10. We'll have a social.

I want to thank very much the Slovaceks for the nice meal they had prepared when we had our seminar there on April 20. I am glad that I got to meet so many youth leaders and youth directors from different districts. It was nice to be with all of you..

14 LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Readers, Despite the cool and misty weather last Sunday, the teens had a picnic at White Rock Lake here in Dallas. The ones Who got there early managed to catch one small fish, but there were no other fish caught during the whole day. We had a fairly good turnout and everyone enjoyed roasting marshmallows. Those marshmallows sure are sticky!

We haven't got anything planned at the present time for an activity, but if you come to the May 19 meeting we will take all your suggestions into consideration. Also in the next meeting we will be discussing plans for the dude ranch, princess ball, and most of all, the convention.

Speaking of the convention, have all the youth sent in their names to Mrs. Petr? EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the Resolution Committee of the Nelsonville SPJST Lodge No. 68, on behalf of the entire membership of our lodge, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, MR. FRANK B. MARESH, who passed away on April 16th at the age of 72 years. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Maresh.

He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Ed Assmon of Industry, Mrs. Charles Krampota, and Mrs. Frank Schovajsa of Rosharon, and Miss Louise Maresh of Nelsonville; two brothers, Henry and Willie Maresh preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Ulrich of Crosby; two sons, Pete Ulrich of Mt. Belview and Joe Carrol Ulrich of Dallas; one brother, Jerry Ulrich of Crosby; two grandchildren, Benjamin and Dorene Ulrich of Mt. Belview, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Paul J. Lee Chapel in Baytown on Saturday, April 20th. Rev. J. T. Barnett of the Crosby Baptist Church officiated.

Burial was in the Cedar Bayou Methodist Cemetery.

Salem Lutheran Church of Welcome Tuesday, April 23 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Brenham Memorial Chapel was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Brother Warmke was born in Austin County, Dec. 12, 1922, the son of the late Fritz and Ella Eben Warmke. He was baptized May 20, 1923. and was confirmed April 10, 1938, all in the Welcome Church. On Oct. 14, 1948, he was married to Myrtle Beckmann.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Myrtle (Beckmann) Warmke; two sons, Warren Dale Warmke and Monte Hale Warmke, all of Bleiblerville; three brothers, Arnold Warmke of Bleiblerville. Freddie Warmke of Sugar Land, and Harry Warmke of Houston; two. sisters, Mrs. Leon Delion of Bellville, Mrs. Fred Winkelmann of Brenham; one brother, Lee Warmke; and one sister, Mrs. Ernest Luedel;.-,:i = eceded him in death.

Before Brother Warmke took ill he was engaged in farming and ranching and was employed by Sealy Mattress Co. May our departed brother rest in eternal peace, and again, our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.

GRIMES. Brother Grimes, 78 years of age, passed away in a Taylor hospital on Saturday, April 20th, 1968. He was born in Elysian Fields, Texas, on January 12th, 1890, and had lived in Taylor for the past 50 years. He served as Williamson County Judge for eight years and was also Taylor city attorney for a number of years. Brother Grimes had been on the law committee of the Grand Lodge of the Sons of Hermann.

Funeral services were held in the Condra Memorial Chapel on Monday afternoon, April 22nd, with the Rev. Thomas J. Bailey officiating. Burial followed in the Taylor City Cemetery.

by Florence Vavra, Lodge 17, New Tabor Alexander Dubcek, 46, Czechoslovak Party leader, has planned, pleaded for, and nurtured the sweeping changes that promised to alter the temper and quality of Czechoslovaika life.

The plan that Dubcek has laid before his colleagues calls for many changes, including a major shrinkage in the party's own powers. He also asked the Central Committee to rewrite Czechoslovakia's laws to assure everything from free speech and secret balloting to the right to emigrate and travel freely abroad. He urged a speedy return to a liberalized e conomy, greater independence from the state for in-

dustrial enterprises and a federal system that would give the country's Slovaks more power to run their own affairs. During his first hundred days in power, he has offered 14,300,000 Czechoslovaks a bright vision of how to take their own special road to socialism. Dubcek, who threw out Antonin Novotny as party boss in January and as president in March, has transformed Czechoslovakia into the most liberal of satellite states. Hardly anything in Czechoslovakia is any lon g cr- so sacred that it cannot be questioned; and the entire change has been worked without bloodshed or disorder.

Censorship has been almost entirely lifted, and the press, television and radio have exploded in an orgy of free expression. Long banned films, plays, books are beginning to be seen. The country's judiciary has undertaken to review all cases heard in the 1950's in order to right leg-al injustices, and a

Wednesday, May 8, 1968 special commission has been established to rehabilitate the thousands of victims of the Stalinist purge trials of that period. Church and clergy are fast being freed of restraints ,and the communists' phony religious front organization is presently disintegrating. Lately the Czechoslovaks even had their first strike. Police will now be required to wear numbered badges for identification. During the week of Mach 25, 1968, three top secretaries of the Central Union Council were forced to quit, the Czechoslovak Women's Union bounced its boss, the director of the secretariat for church affairs was lifted, and the Minister of Health was asked to leave his job.

Relatively few men could have brought off suc.h changes with so much calm and order. A tall, mannerly man, Dubeek would be an unlikely choice for the task if only because he is a Slovak — the first ever to be entrusted with the most powerful office in the land. Polite and soft-spoken, he is a master of restraint and poise; a persuader rather than a strong-arm man, he consults colleagues before acting, feeling that changes within the party should be worked out by compromise rather than by dictation from the top.

Dub'eek also believes that the party should win support among the people for its ideas; he seems genuinely to want his countrymen to have a greater voice in their affairs. "Democracy is not merely the right to utter opinions", he says, "it also depends upon how these opinions are treated, whether the people really have a feeling of taking part in solving important social problems." To see that the Czechoslovak people get that chance, he left his family behind in Slovakia in January, 1968, moved alone into a downtown Prague hotel and began working eighteen-hour days on his reforms.

DubCek has no intention of breaking Czechoslovakia away from the Soviet Union and his socialist neighbors, but they view the events in Czechoslovakia with much alarm. They are all aware that the success of Dubeek's reforms would almost certainly have a spillover effect, causing their neighbors to seek more liberalization at home.

Under the new economic plan that Dubeek • has introduced, sweeping changes will be made in the economy.

Wholesale prices will be determined by market forces instead of party bosses, and incentives will be introduced for both workers and managements. Plant managers will have the power to fire

unnecessary workers, to reinvest profits or to distribute them as bonuses to the workers. One of Czechoslovakia's main needs is to catch up with the West in technology and become competitive again in markets outside the Soviet bloc. Since the country lacks credits in the West, Dubeek will doubtless urge a quick expansion of trade with Western nations to pay for the machines that the country needs for modernization and to buy more of the tup-quality

consumer goods sought by the people.

After years of waiting and watching liberalization spread through other Satellite lands, the Czechoslovaks have finally moved at their own supreme moment and in their own manner. One of the most hopeful signs for the success of their revolution is the amount of participation by the people,. Television has brought many of the changes into most of their homes.
