Youth Program at Lodge 81. We must comment here on the splendid youth program that was presented at Lodge No. 84 in Dallas on the occasion of that lodge's 58th anniversity celebration on Feb. 15th. (The pictures have already appeared). Sister Bessie Petr and all her assistants are to be commended on the originality of the numbers presented and the overall theme of Americanism-patriotism, which is needed sorely in this day and time. They proved that patriotism has not gone out of style, and that being an American is indeed something to be proud of. I was greatly impressed by the entire program, as I am sure everyone else was. Hats off to those who helped with that project!

The trouble with trouble is that it usually starts out as fun. • • The poor thing is having an awfully tough time of it right now. Both her kids and her husband are at such difficult ages.

Investments—Stocks—Bonds. When you buy stock in a company, you became part owner of that company. If you own 10 shares of common stock in a firm which has issued 1,000 shares, you thus own 1 per cent of the company. If there is a profit and dividends are paid,' you get 1 per cent of the dividend. If the company does real well its shares become more in damand and their cost may increase. If the

When you hold a bond, you do not own any part of the company. You have merely lent the company some of your money. The company, in return for the use of your money, promises to pay you back the face value of the bond, plus a stated rate of annual interest. When you buy stock there is no guarantee that you will make any money. You may even lose if the company is not successful. A certain stock may be doing well today and may drop in value rather drastically in the next year or so. Stock prices go up and .down. The reason: the stock market SPJST DIRECTORY IN THIS ISSUE

works on the old law of supply and demand. If there are more people who want to buy a certain stack than there are people who want to sell it, the stock will go up, and vice versa. Some stocks sell for pennies or a very few dollars; others sell for over $300 a share. Price alone should not serve as a barometer of the value of a stock as an investment. However, most brokers consider "penny" stocks to be rather risky. They advise people to invest only if they have sufficient income to cover living costs, if they have adequate life insurance, and if they have savings to meet unexpected contingencies. An investment broker is simply a person who is licensed and authorized to handle' orders for the purchase and sale of securities. They collect, analyze and disseminate investment information to their clients. So much for the very basic facts about stocks, bonds, and investments. There is a good deal more to it than just this short bit of information, and like a lot of other skills, you have to practice it from time to time to keep abreast of everything that goes on. If you contemplate going into any phase of this, check with someone who knows what he's talking about.
