FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER Brother G. Louis Kudrna has submitted a very interesting and comprehensive report on behalf of the Operations and Analysis Committee, and it appears in its entirety in this issue. The report deals primarily with the committee's recommendations on the construction of a new headquarters office building. Two things stand out here: 1) From figures shown in this column previously and from the committee's report, it is clear that we need a new office building. The one we have has rapidly become a "white elephant"; 2) We should not build a new building with the idea of housing tenants or renters. This has proven to be nothing but a headache and definite liability. We are most happy that the O&A Committee has (or will) make the recommendation that the new structure contain facilities for a Czech library, museum, and SPJST archives collection. We have already collected over 1,000 volumes here in West toward that end and will gladly transfer these books to the library whenever the time comes. A number of relics, artifacts, and mementos have also been collected to go in the museum. Once there is room for these items many more will come in without a doubt. We will thus translate about 20 or 25 years of talk
and discussion into action. Finally, after all these years, something will come of it — there will be something left here after we have gone to show the work of those who have gone on before. That's why we have libraries and museums and historical collections. Practically every nationality group in the country is working hard on such museums and collections and every one of them has proven to be a valuable source for research groups and students in colleges and universities. ere are teams going around constantly trying to dig up (literally) items and bits of information relating to the past. Man has always had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge about the past. The SPJST can feel justifiably proud that we will be the custodians of a large representative display of what Czech pioneers in this part of the country contributed to its growth since the early part of the nineteenth century. We should have a section devoted exclusively to items relating to the past history of the SPJST, such as every copy of our by-laws, from the very first to the present; copies of all convention proceedings, pictures of convention delegates, copies of the first official organ, "Hospodarsky Obzor," later simply "Obzor," and all issues of
our "Vestnik," pictures of past SPJST officials, and the list could go on and on. • • Success Of A Salesman We recently came across this item from a trade magazine relating to the ten successful traits of a salesman. A sales manager cannot depend on hiring salesmen who have all the prerequisites for success, but he can look for men who fit as nearly as possible the ideal pattern. Within this pattern, there are certain traits: Selfishness. A good salesman must respond to such incentives as money, prestige, recognition and pride of accomplishment. Sincerity. A buyer can spot insincerity quickly, and he will soon lose interest. Empathy. The salesman should be sensitive to the moods and personalities of the buyers he must deal with. Pleasing Personality. The way to make a friend is to be one, and the salesman with a pleasant, out-going disposition will be remembered and favored. Resourcefulness. Having an agile and analytical mind, the good salesman is able to stay on the right side of the fine line between just right and just wrong.
