FROM 1 JUNE 1968 . . It should be no secret that June 1968 is the time of the 20th General Convention of the SPJST. The almost four years since the Waco Convention have certainly passed quickly. Before you know it, we'll be gathering at the Baker Hotel in Dallas for the next one. For several weeks now, we've been reading carefully the various proposals for by-law changes that have been first sent to the by-law committee and then forwarded to us here for publication. It has been said many times, but it bears repeating: all members interested in the welfare of our Society, in which each of us has "stock", and particularly those members who want to be, or expect to be, elected as delegates to the XXth Convention, have the very serious responsibility of reading and following all these proposals very carefully. You must do your homework before the convention. No person should even contemplate being a delegate unless he follows these proposals carefully. They involve changes that will eventually affect all of us — in one way or another. A thorough knowledge of the bylaws is not reserved for a few, although some people have more time to devote to their study than others.

BE THE BEST . If you can't be a pine on the top of a hill, Be a scrub in the valley but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush if you can't be a tree. We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew, There's something for all of us here, There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do, And the task you must do is the near. If you can't be a highway then just be a trail, If you can't be the sun be a star; It isn't by size that you win or you fail — Be the best of whatever-; you are! —Dattglas Malloch

Nevertheless, each of us should take it upon himself to become as well acquainted with them and the proposed changes as possible. And if you don't have a copy of the latest by-laws on hand, you'd better get one. You'll be completely lost without them, unless

you know all of them by heart. In this issue, for example, the Sunreme Lodge is proposing a number of changes, deletions,, additions, etc. They refer merely to articles and para-' graphs. Unless you have a copy of the ;'resent by-laws in one hand and their proposed changes in the other, the whole thing will be meaningless to you. There should be a copy of the by-laws around your lodge somewhere, or maybe some of the officers have a copy. In any case, you'll be needing it a whole lot in the weeks and months to come IF you plan to offer intelligent proposals yourself, or if you intend being a delegate to the convention. Starting your homework after you get to the convention, or relying on someone else to do it for you, is not fulfilling your obligation : Study, ask questions in your lodge and district meetings, discuss the pros and cons with others, observe, listen, research, and you will be in a .pretty good position to vote with "your mind and not your emotions," as was so aptly put by the 01&A Committee recently. Language Tricks .. . There is this interesting anecdote about the lady in Fort Worth who had an amusing encounter with the intricacies of the Czech and English languages. It seems that the lady, who is
