• Kopecky Family Reunion The Kopecky family reunion will be held Sunday, August 27, at the Vickery Park Picnic Grounds, 7400 Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be served at 1 p.m. All families are to bring a picnic lunch.

Blanche Becan passed away in Johns Hospital in Taylor on August 16th. She had been residing in the SPJST Rest Home at the time. She bad been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 142, Stefanik in Houston for over 50 years.

Burial was in .Houston.

in a convention were passed, and this was the case at this convention. When I recommended that the SPJST make a $1.1'0,000 donation toward the construction of a rest home, it was accepted and passed and that amount was allocated for the project.

Of course, like many beginning enterprises, it was not entirely successful, and it was soon evident that the allotted sum was not enough. The number of occupants was at first small, since there seemed to be a certain amount of distrust in such an institution. It became necessary to admit non-members as well as non-Czechs, so as to insure the proper administration of the home. The main credit for overcoming these early difficulties goes to Brother Steve Valcik, the first manager of the rest home.

Holubec was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar.

Rudolph Paclik, 58, passed away in Gainesville on August 4th. Brother Paclik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 101, Gainesville.

• • Leonard Preisler, 64, passed away in East Bernard on August 10th. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard. Brother Preisler was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 28, East Bernard.

Joseph Jurosek, Jr., 30, passed away in Dallas on August 3rd. Burial was in Calvary Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.

Brother Jurosek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84, Dallas.

Frank Tesar, 84, passed away in a Houston hospital on August 7th. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery. Brother Tesar was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston.

• Mr. and Mrs. G. Louis Kudrna of Ennis stopped at the printshop last Friday. They had with them their children, Gary, Glenn, Karen, and 'Chris. All are members of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis. Brother Kudrna is one of the three members of the Operations and Analysis Committee.

Czech Spectacular at Linden Hall in Elm Mott — Sept. 3rd.

Features MILTON TUPY PROMOTED IN AIR NATIONAL GUARD Milton R. Tupy, son of Wesley W. Tupy and Frances J. Tupy of Dallas, was promoted "on the spot" during Texas Air National Guard summer training for the 221st Radio Relay Squadron of Garland.

Before he went to Westfield, Ill., as site commander, he was airman second class. During the training, Brig. Gen. James M. Rose, Asst. Adjutant for the Texas ANG, while on an "on sight inspection," promoted Tupy to A-1c.

General Rose congratulated A-ic Tupy for his outstanding work as a radio relay equipment repairman. The general also stressed that Tupy's outstanding progress in his military training and studies warranted this type of recognition.

REPORT FROM THE REST HOME IN TAYLOR

(Translated from the Czech by the Editor) I recall the time when I was traveling to a district meeting in Wichita Falls, Texas, with Sister Bessie Valcik.

We had stopped to visit her son. Dr. Valcik, who has a very nice medical clinic in Decatur. This was shortly before the Temple Convention in 1956.

During the entire trip there and back, we talked about how to bring to reality the construction of a rest home, which tvas being talked about a whole lot, but about which no one had any definite ideas. A majority of our membership recognized the need for such a rest home. Before Sister Valcik and I parted I promised her that I would offer a proposal in the coming convention for the construction of a rest home for our aged members, and she, in turn, was going to work on the idea among the various delegates to the convention. In feeling out the delegates, I felt that the feelings were divided about 50-50, for and against. The Supreme Lodge and the directors were mostly opposed to the idea — understandably perhaps, since they were reluctant to assume such a great responsibility.

From my experiences as a delegate to many conventions I had observed that about 8 out of 10 proposals offered

It is governed by seven d i rectors, elected from the seven SPJST districts, who select a manager from the home, who, in turn, governs himself according to the policies of these seven directors. There is also an "Investigating Committee," which passes on the admittance of new residents into the home.

Those of us who c a n -visit those who cannot get about so ea ,)ly. We visit each ether frequently in the large foyer at the entrance to the building. We recall old times when we were young.

Those who like to play dominoes always find eager partners. We thus make the days a little shorter. We have a fairly nice library here, consisting mostly of Czech beaks. We frequently have visitors from the various churches who sing or play for us. There is scarcely a day that we don't have visitors from somewhere. We frequently have visitors from other states, oftentimes those who read about our home in the Vestnik or learned about it through personal correspondence with friends. We always welcome visitors. We gladly show them our rest home, we boast about it, and if we have any, we state our complaints-.

We discussed what we will have on our picnic on August 27th. We will have an auction, so please, everyone donate something for the sale. The yoi'th will have a fish pond: Let's have a big: turnout and a good auction. The ladies are asked to bring cakes, kolaehes, pickles, peaches, and potatoes.

You can fix the potatoes by frying onions into them, using good oleo or good lard; it's too hot for potato salad). Also ranch-style beans go good with sausage, chicken, or stew. We lost another member: Mrs. Helen (Fojtik) Culpepper. She was in a car wreck. She was brought to Smithy'lle for burial. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Fojtik survive her; also two brothers, Edwin and Seguin and Bennie at home. Our sympathy to the bereaved family.

That's about all. Let's get ready for our big day on August 27th and really put it over. Those who want to help, please be there early so we won't have to rush so. Everybody from far and near is invited. Hope to see all of you there. How about you officers from the Supreme Lodge? We are glad to have you. And Editor Morris, how about you and your family? 5 SECOND CZECHOSLOVAK SPECTACULAR

The Second Czechoslovak Spectacular, sponsored by SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco, will be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 3rd, the day before Labor Day Monday. The event is staged every two years at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas, home of Lodge 66. In 1965 between 3 and 4 thousand people attended the affair. This year, Lodge 66 will be prepared to serve all visitors promptly and efficiently.

The noon meal will be served, starting at 11 a.m., and will continue throughout the afternoon. The menu will consist of Czech sausage, sauerkraut, vegetables, pastry and drinks.

Another choice will be fried chicken, vegetables, etc. All plates will sell for $1.

The American -Czech Festival . Society is progressing nicely with the preparation of the Czech Day Program at the State Fair of Texas, which will be celebrated Oct. 8th; 1967, at Dallas, Texas.

The members of the Society agreed that this year we will dance the Czech Beseda, and next year, if possible, the Moravian Besecia. We are encouraging all Beseda dancers to organize circles for the Czech Day program at the State Fair of Texas.

The Czech Day program will have other interesting features, which will be announced 'from time to time. We will appreciate su gg estions for the Czech Day program. If you have an idea, send it to us.

Dr. John M. Skrivanek, professor of SlavOnic Languages at Texas A&M University will deliver a short address in both Czech and English.

Outside activities will start around 1 p.m., with a concert by a Czech brass band, playing authentic old World arrangements from the library of Dr. Joe Kopecky and Sylvester Bundil San Antonio. If Dr. Kopecky is present„ he will direct the group. The brass band will consist of Erie Honza's Orchestra of Ennis. augmented by musicians from San Antonio and West. The Lodge 66 Choral Group will sing Czech and English selections.

Other features on the afternoon Sokol outdoor program will include

Lodge Pokrok Dallas There will be a display of about a dozen antique automobiles, courtesy of the McLennan County Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Ass'n of America, Karl Binner, secretary.

There will be an outside sausage sandwich stand, cold drink and refreshment stands, ice cream, etc. There will also be a gamestand. Inside, there will be booths where Czech smoked products from three or four popular Czech sausage makers will be sold; also sale of Czech home-made bread and pastry.

For the small fry, there will be pony rides. In addition to the shade trees, several tents will be erecte d ta. provide ample shade.

Another popular attraction will be the display of Miss Agnes Houdek's authentically-attired Czech dolls from her huge and valuable collection in Dallas. Miss Houdek has about 47 of these dolls, and their display has proved to be a popular feature of Czech celebrations around the state.

The Day City Dutchmen of Corpus Christi will play at our Chandelier Ballroom this Saturday. I think most of you know that this orchestra plays good mixed music and is not just a polka band as it used to be. So for some good dancing of polkas, waltzes, and modern numbers, come to Lodge 88 this Saturday. Then on Sept. 2nd we have popular Herbert Kloesel's Knights of Dixie of Schulenburg.

There is a date in October that you really should circle, and that is Wednesday, October 25th, when we have a special semi-formal dance with a very special orchestra, Sammy Kaye!

There were many guests from distant places; there was a couple ,from Waco who celebrated their 29th anniversary at this 'danee, but I am sorry I didn't get their names (they enjoy those danees at Linden Hall). Marilyn and E. J. Kadlecek and children Karen and E. J. III, of NeW Bratinfels and their niece Cindy Clark of Tacoma, WaSh., enjoyed the Telstars' music and were aiso here for our homecoming enjoying the Lee Roy Matocha dance! It was a mighty happy little Karen Kadlecek returning to New Braunfels with one of the youth door . prizes, an "Alice in Wonderland" doll won by her grandmother, Louise Kadlecek! Our ballroom was -packed for the Lee Roy Matocha dance on our Homecoming Day, and genial Lee Royi and his expert musicians pleased them all with his polkas, waltzes and mod ern music; there were many from out of town, and among these were Mr. and . Mrs. Frank Brdecka of Rosenberg, and Mr. and Mrs. Bryson of Lodge 81, Needville! Martha Kidder was quite generous with the big, beautifully decorated cake she won as a doer prize and we all enjoyed a slice of it! Members who desire to be delegates should start reading and studying the entire issue of the Vestnik, beginning with this issue. Ten Months from now the 1968 Convention will be history.

Now,-is the time to get prepared.

There. will he arti.â&#x20AC;˘ les not only from the 0 and A Committee, but also from the By-Laws Committee and other committees; reports from, the editor, directors, officers, and the memberShip: One cannot read the proposed laws changes or other proposals during the convention or hear them read once on the convention floor and uoderstandtheir moaning or impact on the functions and operations of the SPJST. Read and study the Vestnik beginning now!

We of the 0 and A Committee are hoping that the delegates of the 1968 COnvention come inferMed and know what to -expect at the convention.

The 0 and A ComMittee will.see that the information is in the Vestnik, if the members who desire to become delegates will just read and study the Vestnik. You need not be surprised and say, "I didn't know this or that was coming up," We feel that any SPJST member who allows himself to be elected a .delegate to the 1968 Convention should have, prepared himself prior to , the convention by reading and studying all the proposed change, or issues prior to the convention and not during the convention,

7 If this is done by each delegate then he or she can cast an intelligent, not an emotional, ballot on all proposalS. Also, we of the 0 and A Committee will feel that we have accomplished a part of our duties as set forth by the 1964 convention.

LODCE NO. 17, NEW TABOR Dear Readers, Our August meeting was called to order by our president, Brother John Vavra.

The Pledge of Allegiance was said by all members present.

The minutes were read and approved as read.

A resolution of sympathy was read for Gus A. Wohnan, who passed away July-I6. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the bereaved family and loved ones.

We had three candidates for membership. They are Willie and Shirley Gloyna and Clarence Charanza. All were accepted.

District I President Vince Schielack, his Wife Rita, and sons Vincent, Harry;' and Ronnie 'were visitors at Lodge 17..

Other visitors were Donnie Heinsohn. of Huntsville and Teddy Heinsohn of Austin. Donnie and Teddy are nephews; of o',:r secretary, Brother Melvin Skra-' banek.

BrOther Schiclack asked New Tabor, to host the fall district meeting, which, the members agreed to do. The meet, ing will be held Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.

By-laws were discussed. It was decided that we would submit two recommendations for amendments. We. will discuss by-laws further at our next: meeting.

Our youth leader, Gladys Trcalek, introduced our District I queen and king, both from Lodge 17. This is the first time we have had a district queen or king from our lodge and to have bothin the same year is a double honor. President Mazanec read a letter from George Kacir of Lodge 54, West thanking Lodge 66 for their help and support in their 70th Anniversary Celebration held in West at Lodge 54 on Aug. 6th. With the local lodges working together, it was a successful event.

In the absence of Bro. Frank Miller, President Mazanec read the minutes of the Board of Directors' meeting held Aug. 7th. The building has been painted. It really looks nice and clean.

Sister Libbie Parma reported for the youth club. She asked the youth to come out and help at State Ynuth Achievement Day, because lots of help will be needed. She said there was a contest on, with the youth and organizers on selling policies from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31.

Sister Agnes Mazanec said she had sent cards to Bro. Roman Parma, who is in the hospital; to Bro. and Sis. Robert Stanislav, on the arrival of a baby

girl; to Bro. and .Sis. Marvin Matus on the arrival of a baby boy. Congratulations to the proud parents.

Bro. Engelke said Bro. Roman Parma would have surgery Monday morning. Bro. Roman will have a long recuperating period, so let's all remember him in our prayers and send him cards. They will help the days pass by a little faster. He is at Providence Hospital in Waco. His home address is: 2008 So. 13th St., Waco. Bro. Roman has visited many people when they were ill, so let's all take a little time to visit him when he can have visitors and send a card to cheer him up.

He urged everyone to come not and hear the final details and offer their help where needed. He said they really enjoyed the trip to Nebraska to see the Czech Festival held there. He said it is worth the time to go and see it.

Door prizes were won by Herbert Vahrenkamp, adult; Mike Kutni, 1st, ana Larry Leshikar, 2nd, youths. A lovely cake, baked by Barbara Gaidusek, was presented to all those having birthdays in July. As the candles were lit everyone sang the birthday song.

Dear Readers and Friends, The Choral Group has had a very busy summer. We have been learning several new songs (new to us) which we will sing, along with some of our old favorites, at the Czechoslovak Day at the State Fair of Texas, Oct. 8th, 1967.

On July 16th several of our choral members performed in different capacities for the Sokol Slet which was held at the Dallas Memorial Auditorium. The performance of the Sokols was very beautiful indeed.

On Aug. 6th we had the pleasure of performing for Lodge 54 in West at their 70th Anniversary Celebration. We Sang several of the beloved Czech songs from our latest record album, Volume 2, On Aug. 13th we also had the pleasure of singing at Lodge 25, Ennis. This occasion was also the 70th Anniversary Celebration of their lodge. After singing several favorite Czech songs, Director, Brother Frank Henzen, vited the audience to join in the singing and the response was unanimous.

The Choral Group wishes to thank both lodges for the delicious food which was served; also for the warm welcome accorded us.

We welcome Brother and Sister John G. Bubak as new members of our group.

The next rehearsal will be Aug. 25th.

Loraine Cocel:, English Reporter -SPJ 8T-LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Sisters and Brothers: This is to notify you that we will have our next regular meeting on Sunday, Aug. 27th, at 2 p.m. The reason for this change is that we did not have our regular meeting on the first Sunday, due to the 70th SPJST Anniversary Celebration which was held in our hall by several McLennan County lodges and which was a success.

The program was very nice and was enjoyed by everyone. There were several nice speeches given by high officials, including Lt. Gov. Preston Smith.

A group from Dallas, dressed in their Czech costumes, sang several Czech numbers, and three beauty queens were present. There were games and pony rides for the younger group. Food was plentiful and was served to a big crowd.

There will be no meeting in September, since our hall will be taken up with various activities. Don't forget the date, Aug. 27th at 2 p.m., our next regular meeting.

Fraternally, Mrs. Bennie Soukup, Reporter --SPJST-LODGE NO. 6, COTTONWOOD rear Readers, Our regular club meeting was held Sunday, Aug. 6th. The attendance was fair. Our new business concerned a swimming party that will be held .Sunday, Aug. 27th, beginning in the afternoon, at the West pool. Members can register any time they wish during the afternoon. All parents are invited to join us. The club will furnish the refreshments and admission. Parents of the club members are asked to help out with the usual snacks. In case of a rainy day the party will be held at a later date.

Now a little bit about our 70th Anniversary Celebration that was held at our lodge on July 30: it was a very hot day but it didn't keep anyone from

VESTNIN coming who wanted to come. Thanks to Bro. Joe Kotch for loaning and setting up his tent for us; that helped so much to have more shade.

We were very happy to have the President of the Supreme Lodge, Bro. Edward L. Marek, and his wife with us. He was our main speaker. He spoke of the history of the SPJST and also of the history of our local charter Lodge No. 6.

We also had many other celebrities present, too many to name. I am afraid I might miss someone. All we can say now is thanks for coming.

We hope you will come again some day for another celebration and again help us make it a successful day. We had various games to entertain all ages â&#x20AC;&#x201D; indoors and out. The favorite and most enjoyable game to play and to watch was "Dunking Sam." The first to be dunked was none other than our District III King, Ernie Makovy. Next was last year's District King, Johnnie Krizan; third, Sherrie Williams, who was a contestant in the Miss Lake Waco Beauty Pageant in June at the Waco Theater. The last brave one was Bro. George Straten and his fancy redstripped bating suit. He is our lodge financial secretary, Thanks a million to these four people for their wonderful sportsmanship.

As always, there were good eats; the turkey and dressing with all the trimmings, various Czech pastries, and various drinks which really hit the spot. This was a sellout. Good music was furnished for the dance at night

by Eddie Klepac and his Rhythm Masters of Temple.

Finally, after much celebration, the crowd went home happy; some were dead tired, but it will be a day to remember, and not easily forgotten. It all just turned out wonderful â&#x20AC;&#x201D; with no ' rain.

Our regular lodge meeting has been postponed to a week later because most of us wish to attend the Czech Spectabular at Linden Hall on Sept. 3rd.

Our meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Sept. 10th, followed by the club meetings.

Everyone is asked. to come early and cooperate with the ones who wish to attend another picnic at 5 p.m.

Public Library Special Collection West, Texas Dear Sir, It is on behalf of a Czechoslovak lady, who cannot communicate well in English, that I am writing to you, with the hope that you can furnish me with any information that would help in a search for this lady's relatives.

It seems she had relatives named August and Alojzia Lebeda, who came to the U.S. from Czechoslovakia, and settled in Texas in 1904, where they operated a brewery. She knows that Alojzia died in 1921, withoUt any heirs.

This is, indeed, a desperate search, and any help that you are able to give will be appreciated most sincerely.

From the University of Texas Library, a 1919 publication about Czechs in World War I there is a Alojzia Lebeda of Weimar, Texas listed.

---SPJSTSOKOL HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: St. Ann's Festival that was held at our new club t wo weeks ago was very successful and entertainment similar to this one is planned for every month until winter. As you will remember, the very popular Bill Mraz Orchestra was featured and he was so well accepted that we are planning to have him return in the near futre. Bill played at the opening of our old hall and we thought it appropriate that he play at the first monthly barbecue at the new hall. We had a full house and the music was enjoyed by everyone. We also had an interesting event take place which shows the human side of life.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Vychopen came to enjoy St. Ann's Day because this charming couple was married 50 years ago on that date. In memory of thi5 occasion a donation was made to Sokol of $50 to represent a dollar for each year of happy married life. Mr. Vychopen was born in Vsetin, Czechoslovakia, and came to the US, at which time he met his bride and were married in Georgetown, Texas Their son trained in Sokol under the leadership of Brother John Kaspar when our classez were held at SPJST Lodge Stefa-

10 The dance last week featuring Jimmy Brosch was a sellout. We had to turn away crowds because we had no tables or chairs available. Every chair in the house, including the bar, was taken and we just could not seat any more customers. We appologize for those who could not find space but we urge you to make reservations in advance to assure a table. Jimmy Brosch will be back again on the pre-thanksgiving dance, since this is the only opening he has until November. Next week we Will have another popular band, the Ray Baca Orchestra. Last week an error occured in that this band was advertised by the incorrect name. This is the popular Ra yBaca Orchestra from Fayetteville and he is the person who went to Washington, D. C. to play the dulcimer at the Smithsonian Institute. Please make your reservations early because we expect another sellout. This is a favorite old time polka band and you will not want to miss it.

Sokol has planned some very exciting items for the public with a Sokol Circus in October, a Fall Festival, and a big New Year's Eve Dance. There are many more big barbecues to be presented and we have our weekly Sunday Socials. We also hope •to spend a large crowd to the Czech Spectacular at Elm Mott on Labor Day weekend.

Join our organization for a weekly entertainment date. The Houston Sokols has organized the "over 35" class which had its first class and it looks like a going thing. Get in the shape of things and feel better by a weekly 30-minute drill, planned particularly for the middle aged. You can exercise in the comfort of an air-conditioned gymnasium with instruction by qualified and experienced instructors. The cost is very small, less than 15 cents per week. Come out and see what you may be missing.

• • On Sunday, Aug. 27th, we will have our second monthly barbecue and dance in the evening. Starting at noon, delicious dinner will be served, and then at 4 p.m. the popular Ladgie Pavelka Orchestra will entertain with all your favorite polkas and waltzes. Reports DISTRICT TWO SALES during July our organizers wrote 61 new members for a total of $114,000 of insurance.

Our top organizer for July was Willie Dusek of Holland Lodge 80, who wrote $17,000' of insurance.

In second place was Jno. Trliea of Granger Lodge 20 with $15,0"0. He was followed closely by Walter jakube, of Seaton Lodge 47, who wrote $14,000 of insurance.

Other good producers for July were Mrs. Ed. Svoboda of Buckholts Lodge 15, with $10,000, and John Plasek of Rosebud Lodge 89 with $7,000.

JULY INSURANCE SALES IN DISTRICT '5 First of all, I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate our organizers in District 5 for the splendid results during the two months' drive in honor of our insurance counselor, Bro. Joe B. Hejny. Thirty-five organizers took part in this drive and wrote 405 applications, which is quite good. This two-month drive gave us a nice gain toward the allotted quota. Some of our organizers were unfortunate and had to spend some time in hospitals, but even at that they did write some business between their illness, which is very commendable.

Sister Evelyn Mikeska had surgery and spent quite a while in the hospital.

Sister. Rita Broz also had surgery and was confined in Heights Hospital over a week. She is a newly-appinted organizer and she did manage to write.

Brother Frank Beran Jr., from Lodge 146 in Galveston is still in St. Mary's Hospital . after three Weeks; but he also managed to keep his name: on the active list. I sincerely wish all three a speedy recovery and their health back.

Fraternally, Frances Olexa, District 5 Organizer —SPJST-MINUTES OF THE DISTRICT II FALL MEETING AND YOUTH RECREATION DAY The District II Fall Meeting and Youth Recreation Day was held at Camp Tahuaya on August 6, 1967.

The business meeting was called to order by the District II President, Brother Frank Klinkovsky, at 1:30 p.m.

After the pledge of allegiance, Brother Klinkovsky welcomed the crowd and then introduced Brother and Sister Edward L. Marek, Brother and Sister Ben Zabcik, and. Brother and Sister Jerry Valchar.

Brother Klinkovsky then introduced the visitors and welcomed them to participate in the day's activities.

All parties then stood for a moment of silent prayer in memory of the deceased members.

Brother Klinkovsky led the members in singing the Star Spangled Banner, America, God Bless America, and the SPJST song.

District II Secretary, Sidney Kacir, read the minutes of the spring meeting which were approved as read.

The District, II Treasurer, Alfred Gensler, reported that the District II cash balance, after today's expenses, is $14,84. The District II vice-president and organizer, Leonard Mikeska, the District II Reporter, Katherine Walker, and the District Youth Director, Emily Mikeska, and District II Direc-. tor, Henry Vitek, were then called on for their reports.

I would like to mention that during the entire meeting all members and all youth listened attentivel y to the proceedings and enjoyed taking part in them. District II Youth Director, Sister EMily Mikeska, will send a separate report describing the youth activities. Everyone enjoyed the excellent attitudes of the youth and the supervision and assistance of adult Members.

There was no old business to be taken care of and Brother Klinkovsky opened the floor for new business. The members voted unanimously in favor of accepting Lodge 48's invitation to hold the spring meeting at Beyersville. The meeting will be held the first Sunday following Easter.

Boudny suggested that one possibility is for each local lodge to pay the district the sum of $5 per member, the number of members to be determined in October of each year and the first payment to be due in January, 1968. (The number of members for which a payment is due is to be the number of members eligible to vote for delegates). Brother Frankie Novosad put Brother Boudny's suggestion in the form of a motion, seconded by Brother A. L. Boudny, and was duly passed by the members.

BY-LAW RECOMMENDED CHANGES AND PROPOSALS

(Published exactly as received - Ed.) MOTIONS TO AMEND BY-LAWS In our by-laws, we have in article 2-b following provision: "All proceedings in the convention as well as all local lodges are conducted in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order, unless such rules are contrary to our

Wednesday, August 23, 1967 The reason this article 2-b is mentioned here is that Robert's Rules fur, ther state on page 28 "The member upon whose motion the immediately pending debatable question was brought before the assembly is entitled to be recognized as having the floor (if he has not already spoken on the question) even though another has risen first and addressed the chair."

Of course, this Robert's Rule pertains to assembly action on the convention floor, but, it may safely and quite properly be adjusted to fit our pre-convention activity, especially the requirements of article 21, precisely paragraphs "d" and "e". Paragraph "d" directs that motions to change by-laws must be submitted to the secretary of the By-Laws Committee, who in paragraph "e" is directed to publish in â&#x20AC;˘ estnik immediately all such motions and, of course, this publication of motions to change by-laws necessarilly should include the reasons fcr the suggested changes.

In our Society's system, of handling pre-convention motions to change sundry articles of by-laws, stating the reason for the change should be of considerable help to the by-law committee, to the delegates elect, to the reading membership and also to the success of the motions. Some of these motions do not require much. explanation, but, if explanations for some of the motions seem rather verbose, let me assure the reader that the verbosity is not intentional; rather it is necessary.

In article one, paragraph "a", on page 29 of our by-laws we have the word "organization", with the explanation, that it means the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, often abbreviated by the initials of Czeth name SPJST. This word, organization, appears in our by-laws in following articles and paragraphs! article one, paragraphs "a", "c" and "e".

Article three, par. "a", "b", "c", "d", "g" andy "h". Further art. 6, 12, 28, 29, 33-a, 33-b and c; art. 35b-c-d and f, 36-g, 37-b-f and i; 38-a-b and 1; 39f; 40, 43, 44 -c-g-i-k-1; art. 45 - a-b-f-j-o r- and t; art. 47- a and b.; art. 54-a, 58-a, 63-a, 64-c, 66 -(c) c, 73, 74, 103, 128-a, 130, 131, 134-a, and 138-f.

Here is my motion: Change the word "organization" in all the above mentioned articles to "Society". There is one very good reason for this change.

Take a look at the Fraternal Statute of the State of Texas and you will find the statute is calling Fraternals

"Societies" - all of 184 times, by my count; and maybe I missed some.

There you have it, one hundred and eighty four reasons, all good reasons.

Another word that decidedly is not proper for the purpose is "alternate" instead of the correct translation of the czech word "nahradnik - the word "substitute". There is quite a difference in the meaning of these two words, and also in the actions of those the two words designate. The "alternate" reports at the convention at the same time the regular delegate reports and his name is announced as alternate on the roster of delegates.

A substitute attends the eonventioni only when the regular elected delegate is unable to attend and acts as what he really is, the delegate representing, his lodge at the convention. Even if the elected delegate appears later at the convention, his substitute , that reported to the convention for him and was accepted as the representative of the lodge, is doing the acting and .iJ oting. We had an example of -this, if my memory serves me right, during the 1956 convention in Temple, where the elected delegate could not cow', for the start of the convention hi' appeared on WedneSday, but ,ins; spectator; did not participate in deliany berations and did not vote time.

It is different with alternates. One of them may be absent from the floor several hours, but returning back to the Hoer, he may replace a delegate from his lodge with full rights to act and also vote. They surely do 'alternate."

My motion is to eliminate the word "alternate" and replace it with the word "substitute" in following articles: 2-a, 5-a, 5-b, 5-c, 6, 7-a, '7-c, 8-a, 8-b, 12, 19-b, 63-c, 63-d, 63-e and 63-f.

Article 14, par, "a", - Present paragraph states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;All members of the Supreme Lodge may participate in discussions at the convention and have the right to make motions to amend by-laws but do not have the right to vote or to nominate members of the Supreme Lodge unless they are delegates from the lodge in which they have membership.!'

My motion to .this article 14 paraof the y graph "a" is: "An Supreme Lodge that does not represent his lodge in the convention as elected delegate is, by virtue of, his office, (ex officio) member of the convention. He has the ri ght of discussion

on any matter pending before the delegates but does not have the right to nominate members of the Supreme Lodge."

The way this paragraph "a" of article 14 is set up now, inference may be drawn that a Supreme Lodge member may offer amendments to our bylaws from the floor at any time during discussion of any article. Noticeable is the omission, in the motion to amend, of the provision "to make motions to amend by-laws." To make motions to amend by-laws is the inherent ',right of every member of the Society and how to make such motions is amply and understandably covered by articles 17-n and 21-d and that coverage goes for any member of our SPJST. Please add at the end of article 21 paragraph "a": "Receomendations to amend bylaws by suggesting supplement, complement, change or abolition of articles or paragraphs of article's Maybe made by any individual member of the SoTiety or by the lodge or by a committee elected or appointed by the lodge for this purpose. Such recommendations of by-law amendmends by any lodge as a whole or by its committee does not abrogate; the right of any member of such lodge to submit and have duly published and considered by the bylaw committee his individual concept 'of any article or paragraph of the bylaws."

We also talked about our swimming social, which will be held , at the American Legion in El Campo on August 27th. We also changed our meetings from Mondays to Tuesdays at 4:30.

Door prizes were won by Karen Dorotik, Monica Merta, Maurice and Tommy Dluhos. After the meeting was adj ourned we played a game called bunco and had refreshments of cake and punch.

Then on Aug. 13th we had our youth club meeting. All members were present, except 3 plus 4 visitors. After the meeting we played 'zanies. First

we had a potato race and our side won by a potato. Then we played a game where we blew up balloons, then sat on them to pop them. It was hilarious. Then we had some very tasty refreshments.

Three days later on Wednesday, August 16 our youth club held a swimming party, followed by a hot dog sunper. Most of us agreed that it was the most exiciting party we've had.

By Elaine Favelka Lodge No. 35, Elk Czechoslovakia is a country in the center of Europe. It is the land of the Czechs and the Slovaks, two closely related Slavic peoples. The Czechs live in the western part of the country, in areas called Bohemia and Moravia.

The Slovaks live in the east, in Slovakia. This landlocked country is completely surrounded by other countries -- Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Austria. For this reason, it has always depended on some other country for protection.

Czechoslovakia has beautiful scenery, with rugged, snow-capped mountains, rounded hills, and rolling plains.

Its natural resources include black, fertile farm lands and valuable minerals. The country is almost as large as New York, but has almost 3,000,000 less people.

The arts of Czechoslovakia are based on handicrafts, for which the people are famous. In the cities in Bohemia and Moravia the native dress has been largely replaced by western European attire. But on Sundays and holidays the streets of Slovak cities are gay with brightly-colored costumes. • The women wear full-gathered cotton or woolen skirts of vivid red or blue, with deep flounces or aprons of lace. Their cotton or linen bodices are either white or eolored. They have large full white sleeves, on which floral and scroll designs are embroidered in red, blue, and gold. The neckerchief for the shouldis, the head band of ribbons, and the sleeveless jacket are richly embroidered. Even a wedding dress is made Of many colors, and the veil is composed of layer on layer of embroidered ribbons. Men, too, wear colorful costumes.

Their trousers and sleeveless jackets are heavily embroidered, and their white shirts are full•sleeved.

The Slavic love for embroidery is also displayed in the bedspreads, curtains, tablecloths, and napkins of their homes. The house may be a. thatched-roof, one-room cottage o6 the poorest peasant, but inside will be seen the beautiful embroideries that have become popular in other countries. Other ancient crafts include weaving and pottery making.

18 the young men and women in 130hernia. (The word Sokol means "falcon."). Sokols are found in all sections of the country. Thousands attend the celebration held every few years in Prague, the largest city and capital.

The Sokols help to maintain the national feeling of their members. For this reason they were disbanded when the country was occupied by the Germans in 1939.

The Czechs are also a music-loving people, and every large town has its opera house and choral society. Czech literature, dating back to the 14th century, is one of the oldest Slavonic literatures in history.

After World War I, the Czechs and Slovaks won their independence and set up a republic. Then after World War II in 1945, the restoration of Czechoslovakia as a country ended.

The people of Czechoslovakia are very proud of their heritage. They are not alone, however. Today, even people in America are proud of their great Czech heritage as it is passed on from generation to generation. We all hope it will continue to do this forever.

"CZECHOSLOVAKIA" Vernell Zak Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville In the 800's a tribal chief, Moimir, began to build the great Moravian Empire in Slovakia. In 1377, King Charles of Bohemia became Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Czechs considered his reign their "Golden Age" becaus he ruled the empire from Prague and won land and importance for Bohemia.

Protestants in Bohemia made war on the Hapsburgs in 1618, but were dedefeated at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620. In 1848-1849 Austria put down a Czech revolutionary movement in Prague. In 1914-1918, after World War I, the Czechs and Slovaks won their independence and set up the Republic of Czechoslovakia. World War II ended in restoration of Czechoslovakif as a republic.

The Second Czechoslovak Spectacular, put on • and sponsored by SPJST Lodge No. 66, Waco, every two years, will be held this year on Sunday, Sept. 3rd, the day before Labor Day. The affair is held at Linden Hall in Elnr Mott. Dr. John M. Skrivanek, professor of Slavonic languages at Texas A 85 M University, will deliver a short address in Czech and English. One of the main attractions will be a brass nand, playing authentic Czech band arrangements, from the music library of Dr. Josef Kopecky of San Antonio.

Another feature will be the display of about a dozen antique cars from the McLennan County Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Ass'n of America.

Inside the hall will be bulk sale of smoked meat products from three Czech sausage makers, Czech homemade bread, pastry, etc. Sokol exhibition, Beseda dancers outside on the tennis court. ,

THE FAMILY LAWYER Assassinating a President To many foreigners, and to many Americans as well, one of the oddest aspects of the assassination of President Kennedy was that the United States had no law against it.

Was this just a legislative oversight? Not at all. On the contrary, such a law had been proposed and debated a number of times over the years —and had always been turned down.

Of course, that does not mean the assassination was legal. The lack of a federal law merely reflects the fact that, in this country, the punishment of crime has always been entrusted primarily to the individual states. The presidential assassination, while not forbidden by federal law, was clearly forbidden by the laws of every state.

Why this arrangement? For reasons both historical and geographical, most crimes fit more naturally into state and local jurisdiction. It would seem strange indeed to have the federal government prosecuting the man who holds up the corner grocery or who drives recklessly down Main Street.

And the Constitution itself, while giving the states a free hand to deal with crime, gives the federal government no such leeway. The federal government may punish crime only if the power is: 1) given expressly (for example, the power to punish treason); or 2) given by implication (for example, the power to punish interference with the United States mail).

As a rule, the crime of murder has no pecular significance to the federal government. Neither expressly nor by implication does the Constitution give the federal government a general power to punish homicide.

Yet, murdering the President is more than just murdering a man. It is a blow at the government itself, because it destroys the central repository of the nation's executive authority.

Furthermore, as a practical matter, federal agencies — which have the dutyto protect the President — should be better able to investigate such a crime.

VESTNIK The Kennedy assassination lent fresh urgency to these considerations.

And at last, 176 years after the nation began, Congress has finally given overwhelming approval to a bill making it a federal offense to kill the chief executive.

The maximum penalty: death.

Reid of Houston and Ruby Reid of Victoria; one step-grandson, Allen Dean Simmons of Houston; three brothers, Ernest Cykala of Hungerford, Louis Cykala of Louise, and John Cykala of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Millie Vita of Seymour, and Mrs. Annie Schattel from Houston.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 16, from the Heights Funeral Home in Houston.

Brother Tesar was born in Okres Blansko, Moravia and came to the United States in 1906. He was an active member of our lodge for many years and was a past president of the lodge.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Heights Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. H. E. Beseda officiating, with burial in Brookside Cemetery.

Brother Tesar is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Helen Kroulik and Mrs. Wilma Wallace; granddaughter, Mrs. Frances Bounds, Jr., great-granddaughter Miss Kimberley Bounds, all of Houston.

sympathy to the family of our departed brother, JOS. J. NEUMAN, who passed away in his home, Thursday, August 3, 1967, at the age of 79, after an illness of two years. He was a retired farmer and merchant.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 4, at 4 p.m. at the Garmany and Company Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Lockhart officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery at Rosenberg.

Survivors are his wife, Agnes Nenman; son, Jermel Neuman of Austwell; daughter, Mrs. Maydale McNutt of Rosenberg; two brothers, Vincent Neuman of Needville, and John Neuman in Czechoslovakia; two sisters, also live in Czechoslovakia; and two grandchildren, Tom and Gaye McNutt of Rosenberg.

Bro. Neuman was born April 7, 1888, and came to the United States from Czechoslovakia at the age of 16 years, and lived in El Campo a few years.

While employed in Sugar Land in 1914 he was married to Miss Agnes Dobesh. Later the couple moved to Rosenberg where for a number of years he was in business. Almost 20 years ago he retired and lived on their farm at Pleak until his death.

The deceased poined an SPJST lodge in El Campo in 1907, at the age of 19 years. Later after he moved to Rasenberg, he transferred his membership to Rosenberg Lodge No. 108, which in 1961 merged with Lodge No. 81, Needville.

Bessie Franek Stella Moucka Marie Mateei â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Resolution Committee -SPJSTRESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY In behalf of the membership of Lodge 81, Needville, we the undersigned members of the Resolution Committee, herewith extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of, AUGUST KUBOSII. Brother Kubosh, age 79, passed away in the Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, August 1, 1967, where he was hospitalized seven weeks prior to his death; however, he had been in ill health since 1952.

Triska Funeral Home was in cnarge of arrangements, and services were held at the Brethren Church in Rosenberg Wednesday, August 2, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the WOW Cemetery at Rosenberg. The SPJST graveside ritual was conducted by the lodge president, Bro. Charlie Matcek.

The deceased, a retired farmer, was born in 1888, at Hackberry in Lavaca County, the son of Pete Kubosh and Mary (Nedbalek) Kubosh. In 1912 he was married to Miss Emilie Miska, and the ccuple lived roost of their lives in Fort !lend County, the last 26 years in Rosenberg.

Survivors include his wife Emilie Kubosh of Rosenberg; three sons. Ernest Kubosh of Bellaire. Terry Kubosh Of Rosenberg, and Walter Kubosh of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Johnson of Pasadena, and Mrs. Esther Ruth DeLeon of Beaumont; two brothers, Charlie Kubosh of Weatherford, and Adolph Kubosh of Millsap; four sisters, Mrs. Ella Brashear and Mrs. Cecelia Edwards, both of Burkburnett, Mrs. Gusta Newman of San Antonio, and Mrs. Lydia McCulley of Mason; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bro. Kubosh was a charter member of Lodge 81, Needville at the time it was organized in Rosenberg in 1909.

He was a faithful member of the lodge and attended the lodge meetings as long as he was able.

Vzpominarn na dobu, kdy't jsem se sestrou Valeikovou, jel do distriktni schfize do Wichita Falls, Texas, kde jsme zastavili u jejiho syna Dr. Valeika, ktery ma dnes v Decatur, Texas dobfe zatizenou kliniku. To bylo kratce pied sjezdem SPJST v Temple v ro- ce 1956.

Po cele ceste tam a zpet jsme se sestrou Valeikovou rokovali o torn, jak by bylo mcAno uvest ye skutek to mySlenku o postaveni utulny, o ktere se tehdy uz hodne mluvilo, ale doposud nikdo nemel Zadneho definitivniho ndvrhu. Pottebu utulny, Oak uznavala pfevatina, vetSina Clemu v cele Jednote.
