WTOR'S DESK A FAVORABI.F. ENVIRONMENT Counselors in a high school that is sending 94 per cent of its it'67 gyadttes to college this fall believe that college oriented students are the prodHA of keenly intereAed parents . and a community concerned with higher education. An 11 per cent increase in students going to college from another school is attributed to "an improved orientation program." Here the school introduced an environmental chan g e, and was able to motivate its students toward a higher educational goal. Increasingly, man is learning to create environments that promise more meaningful utilization of human resources. One production plant in a manufacturing organization is clean, orderly and efficient. Another similar operation in the same company lacks the equivalent standards of orderliness and efficiency. Many of the accwnpliShments of the first plant can be attributed to creating the proper atmosphere and pride among the employees. Some communities are progressing in slum clearance, beautification and zoning, while others have little, if any, civic pride. Publicity from. civic clubs, newspapers and other sources help

The trouble with progress is that it compels us to scrap a lot of fine, old ins titu lions. city leaders create a desire for a better community through constant diseu ssions of the subject along with appropriate action. Positive attitudes toward community improvement create a fertile environment for business growth. This, in turn, elevates the life of the entire community. Soil condition and climate make the difference in whether or not a certain kind of vegetable, flower, shrub or tree will thrive. It is a matter of selecting and maintaining the proper
environment to insure healthy and vigorous growth. Hundreds of business firms are using a "Zero Defects" program to create an awareness among employees of the cost of errors, and to encourage employees to find ways to improve their performance. The broad publicity aimed at working toward an absence of mistakes tends to make each employee conscious of the subject on an hourby-hour basis, thereby stimulating his desire for excellence. Many business firms put forth effort and expense to create a specific "corporate image." The giant A&P chain store organization advertising says "We Care." Avis advertises "We Try Harder." These slogans create an attitude among employees that *s designed to gain the very best treatment for customers. Thus, whether we call it orientation, image, atmosphere, environment, climate, awareness or Attitude, it is something that can be created to help bring about the desired result in a person, home, business or community. • • Quick Thinking An ounce of quick wit is often worth a hundredweight of argument. An insurance salesman sold a $50,000 insurance policy on a term plan.
