THINK IT OVER ..

Thanksgiving, 1966, is now gone.

Thanksgiving somehow heralds the official 'opening" of the Christmas season. Aside from all the personal joys we will derive from this season of the year, our lodges must not forget the many opportunities to carry out charitable projects in the communities where we live. The opportunities are unlimited. Many of our youth clubs have already undertaken some of these projects; others are being planned. We have been calling attention to this charity work in this column for the past three seasons. We must do it. This is one of the things that characterizes a fraternal organization. Carrying our charity projects in our communities is what distinguishes us from other insurance organizations. Actually, you and your lodge can undertake charity projects any time of the year, but the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems to be the most appropriate for such works.

Greatness, in the last analysis, is largely bravery — courage in escaping from old ideas and old standards and respectable ways of doing things, This is one of the chief elements in what we vaguely call capacity. If you do not dare differ from your associates and teachers you will never be great or your life sublime. You may be the happier as a result, or you may be miserable, Each of us is great insofar as we preceive and act on the infinite possibilities which lie undiscovered and unrecognized about us.

We are under constant scrutiny of others to see if we practice what we preach. The coming few weeks offer such an oppartunity. Be generous! Remember, it Won't be long before Supreme Lodge Secretary Urbanovsky will be mailing out the usual questionnaires for the lodges to fill out, regarding your fraternal activities. Be sure

and include everything. Make sure that the recipient of your charity, no matter what you give or to whom, knows that it came from a unit or lodge of the SPJ,ST. "It felt great to have all that responsibility . with all these activities we never have a chance to get bored."

This was the way a young lady described recent youth activities in her lodge.

This is powerful proof that the youth, given a task, can carry it out with surprising efficiency. Their methods may be a little different from those of adults, but they get the job done. If they did everything like adults, then

they wouldn't be children, would they?

And that would be a pity!

We hear so much about the headaches caused by only a very small fraction of our young people. True, that small fraction can be pretty bothersome. But like in so many other areas of human activity, we tend to judge many people by the actions of a few. Trouble with juveniles (and adults) has existed from the time man was created. Socrates complained about it. Judging from his comments at the time, the world was not due to last much longer. That was about 450 years before Christ.

This may be a rather cumbersome way to bring out a very simple fact: young people — the vast majority — are fine young citizens, and if given the responsibility and clear tasks, they do a creditable job. To constantly point out that the youth is the future of our organization and then no nothing to let them prove this axiom is nothing less than farcical and unfair. Give them tasks, assign responsibilities, give them guidance when needed, and you'll see how well they do. In so doing, they will acquire one of the most valuable lessons of human existence — that of achieving a common goal by working with others.

None have ever been tossed in the waste basket. The youth need as much stimulation and encouragement as the adults. Our youth leaders, at all levels, are constantly striving to improve the quality of the youth program. In some areas, we are still in virgin territory, and not everything goes as expected.

Trial and error will remedy that.. In the meantime; we must- support our youth leaders ,and youth directors.

They are performing a thankless task and a difficult one. In some lodges, the hardest office to fill is that of youth leader. Small wonder; the work is very demanding.

Buying time ... Where can you buy time? America's greatest chain stores and supermarkets sell "everything under the sun," but they can't wrap up five years for you and put them into layaway until you need them. You'll never find units of time on the shelves of Macy's or Gimbel's in New York City.

Yet, incredible as it may sound, you can purchase this vital commodity — in the form of life insurance. Every man wants to create the best for himself and his family, the basic unit of our civilization. He shelters and takes care of his offspring until they are ready to leave the home. In the meantime, he has taken steps to make careful financial plans aimed at preparing the best for those who depend upon him for the necessities of life. He may obligate himself to pay off a mortgage loan so his survivors would have a roof over er their head. Ea may purov chase endowment plans to send his children through colle g e. He wants to be independent when he reaches retirement age, so he purchases retirement insurance.

All of these are good, indeed necessary,_ but they are based on years and years of accumulated funds. Most of us acquire our possessions that way. But no man can see around the corner.

Time can suddenly run out, and these plans remain uncompleted. If on the other hand, he has acquired life insurance, the "machinery" goes right on

Wednesday, November 30, 1966• functioning. Life insurance protects against loss of income by providing income that we didn't have the time to earn ourselves. He could have purchased "emergency time."

Newsbriefs Arrangements have been completed for the appearance of the 17-piece Glenn Miller Orchestra at Linden Hall, Lodge 66, Waco, on Thursday, Feb. 2nd.

The band is directed by and features Buddy DeFranco. The band appeared on Jackie Gleason's Show last Saturday.

Larry Kalina, member of SPJST Lodge No. 58, Hungerford, was recently elected chairman of the District 11 4-H Council. As chairman he will represent his district in the State 4-H Council. He will also preside over the 19 counties in District 11 at all meetings and events. Larry has been an outstanding 4-H Club member in Wharton County for the past eight years, and has received many awards of recognition. Larry is currently king of SPJST District Six, and was runnerup at the State YAD. • • Julius Podhrasky, Sr., 82, passed away November 23rd in Dallas. Cremation followed funeral services in Weiland-Memorial Chapel. Brother Podhrasky was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 130, Dallas. ♦ 4 Anna Vlha, 89, passed away in the Halbert Hospital and Clinic in Rosebud on Nov. 9th. Interment was in Woodland Cemetery in Rosebud. Sister Vlha was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 89, Rosebud.

• • Lillian Schwenke, 65, passed away in King's Daughters Hospital in Temple on Nov. 15th. Burial was in Belwood Memorial Park in Temple. Sister Schwenke was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton.

Ned Fails, 66, veteran Taylor law officer, passed away in a Taylor hospital Nov. 23rd. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery. Brother Fails was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 48, Beyersville.

• • Rudolph Vanzura, 68, passed away in a Waco hospital Nov. 23rd. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Brother Vanzura was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 54, West.

VESTNfK Lee Sedlmeyer, owner and publisher of The Shiner Gazette, 56, passed away Nov. 22nd, in the Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner, after a prolonged illness. Burial was in the shiner Catholic Cemetery. Brother Sedlmeyer was a member of SPJST Lodge N o . 45, Shiner.

LODGE NO. 56, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Members, This is a reminder about the annual meeting of Lodge No. 56, SPJST, which will be held Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m., at the Sokol Hall, 5440 Kostoryz Road. At this meeting, there will be election of officers and committees for the coming year, so all of you try to make a special effort to attend after the meeting a sausage supper will be served free to the members. Many of you have worked hard, while some of us have done very little. Still, others just took it for granted that their share of the work load would be done by somebody else— and it was. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all put our shoulders to the wheel

Wednesday, November 30, 1966 and pushed a little harder for a bigger and better year? Some people criticize everything that is undertaken for the best interest of the lodge. Wouldn't it be a lot better if, in place of criticism, we rolled up our sleeves and said: "I'm going to give this all I've got and help put it over"? Then, if the desired results were not achieved, then some criticism would seem to be in order. But to criticize without trying to do the job is something else. Let's all work for the success of all our projects, and we will see that it pays to work together!

Next month we will have election of officers. We should carefully select qualified and loyal people, those who have proven themselves worthy of your confidence. Then, after they are elected, get behind them and give them all your help and cooperation. Brothers and sisters, that is how our biggest lodges have grown. It's up to us to continue making our lodge progress and we can do it!

Read your lodge by-laws. Study them. Know what each committee and group is responsible for. Give them your full support. Let each officer and committee be aware of their responsibilities, and then, let each do his or her job with a minimum of interference from those who do not have the responsibility. You elect those people to office, so have enough confidence in them to let them try to .do their best for you. We may often think we could have done this or that better than someone else, but things always look a little easier to the person who isn't doing the work. When you actually get involved in it, you see certain things crop up that you would have otherwise not even anticipated. We then find that we can't do nearly as well as the other guy.

Another thing we let ourselves in for sometimes is that when we take our oath of office we pledge ourselves to treat every member equally and alike, but when we assume our duties, we tend to favor only those we like personally and let the others fight their way through. This discourages these people, they lose interest, and drop out of lodge work. Before you accept an office, ask yourself: "Am I qualified? Am I big enough to treat every member alike?" If you measure up to this standard and can live up to the pledge, then feel free to accept an office. Quite often we elect someone to an important office just because we like him or her personally. We don't

Wednesday, November 30, 1966 stop to consider their qualifications, their loyalty to the lodge, and whether they will serve with pride and dignity and be a credit to the lodge and the entire SPJST. ;sometimes, the • el ection of a "popular" person does more harm than the rest of the members can repair. Restoring confidence in a person who has been seriously wronged is often impossible and the lodge suffers for it. Therefore, be sure of your selection and that the person elected will make the type of executive you expect.

Our old-timers are fast fading from the scene. In many lodges they are forgotten, and we remember them only when they pass away. Only then do we wake up and recall all that they have done toward building our lodges down through the years when they had very little to work with. They carried on despite the hardships. Some of them — God bless 'era — are still with us. Remember, they are still human and they appreciate your thoughtfulness in remembering them while they are still here with us.

In closing, I would like to wish every lodge a bountiful New Year. Let's strive for a better tomorrow and do a better job for our lodge, and in this manner, we will return, in some small measure, thanks and gratitude to our fathers and forefathers for the foundation they have laid and the SPJST being what it is today.

This will probably be the last communication from me this year, so I'd like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a Very Merry Christmas and the Happiest New Year Ever!

by Tana Kutni, Janice and Joyce Briggs. They gave the Lodge Pledge, also, with the audience joining in.

Visitors were Mrs. E. M. Shiller, s. Clara Mace, Mrs. Rudolph Alexander, and I'm sure there were more, but they failed to register in the guest book, so we missed them. We were very glad to have you come visit with us.

We hope you will come again.

All officers were present, except President Mazanec.

Secretary Rose Parma read the minutes of the October meeting. They stood approved as read. There was no correspondence.

Bro. Frank Miller read the minutes of the Board of Directors' meeting held Oct. 30.

Bro. Henry Slovak, bar chairman, gave his annual report, Bro. Leon Hensel reported the Auditing Committee had gone over the books and all were in order and up to date.

Sis. Libbie Parma gave her report.

She asked Sisters Filornena Miller, Mary Simcik. and Alone Leggio to judge the Christmas decorations, made by the youth. There was a junior and a teen-a ge division.

Sister Libbie said we would have the Youth Council Banquet at Linden Hail.

It was discussed and voted to have it the last Sunday in April, 1967.

It was also voted on to have all Lodge 63 members get in free at the Christmas night dance, Dec. 25th.

The youth are planning to present a Christmas pageant at the Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 17th.

Sister Libbie was very pleased with all the clothing brought by the members for the clothing drive. The youth will turn them in to Goodwill Industries for needy school children.

She asked everyone to stay and enjoy the youth game night. For 50 cent you could play as many games as you ' s hed. All proceeds taken in will be cl to -lin Christnias food baskets for :faniijos. There were many nice prizes; some were donated by Cogdell's store.

Birthdays for Nov. are: Sisters Mary imeik, Mathilda Jean Spence, Sharon Engelke, Patricia Karen Stanislav, Catherine Elizabeth Clay, Kay Gerlich, Beverly Gaidusek, Cynthia Korenek, and Bertha Vahrenkamn: Brothers Frank Parma, George Trefny, Otis Ceska, Henry West, and Otto Mattis.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

The Health Committee reported that there was no one ill. Bro. John Simcik said he visited the Louis Kazdas and they were both doing fine.

We had one transfer: Joseph Gaidusek from Lodge 54, West.

New members are: Mabel Crow, James J. Crow, Frederick W. Green, Agnes Mary Green, Jack C. Wilkinson, Sr., Billie Lucille Wilkinson, Raymona (Garcia) Herrera, Mellisa Herrera, and Abbie Miller. Welcome to Lodge 66!

Bro. Nick Morris spoke a few words.

He and his family were on the way to Taylor to an organizers' luncheon and only had a short time to stay. Bro Morris proposed that the organizers who wrote up new members should introduce them at the meetings. It was voted on and passed that they do so in the future.

Bro. Morris also proposed that the Entertainment Committee be in complete charge of the 1967 Czech Spectacular, and pick others to work with them as they are needed, and in this way there wouldn't have to be so many meetings. Plans arc already in the making and others are being checked on. Even though new ones may be voted in at the next meeting, they would work just like the ones who had been on the committee befog.

Bro. Morils was very pleased with the Wayne King dance. He received a letter from the Glen Miller Orchestra.

They are making a tour and will be through in February and would like to play at Linden Hall on Feb. 2, 1967. It was discussed, voted on and passed to have them play on that date. The Entertainment Committee is in charge.

Bro. Otto Hanus said we would have the Pavelka Orchestra from Robstown on one date in 1967, and the Majek Orchestra twice.

Lodge 66 by-laws books were passed out and Bro. Otto Hanus asked everyone to please read them and study them before the next meeting, so that they will know ail the rules and regulations before election time. And memhers, please, when you are nominated to be an officer or serve on a committee, don't turn it down. It isn't so bad. You can really learn a lot about lodge work. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. We all make mistakes. None of us are that perfect. There is always someone ready to help you. If you would each take on office or serve on some committee you would know what it is to try to do that task and then there wouldn't be so much criticism of those who have them and are trying to do the best they can. It's much easier to sit back and tell the other fellow what to do, than get in there and do the job yourself. So come on and give it a try. We're never too old to learn.

Be a good sport. Think about it.

Bro. Rudolph lahnan, President of District 3, stopped by to say thanks to Lodge 66 for the hospitality they extended at Youth Achievement Day in June and State Achievement Day in August. These decorations were planned and made by the youth themselves. We really have some artistic youth. There were so many pretty ones, I'm sure the judges had a tough time deciding the winners.

The meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.

The youth meeting followed, after which a delicious buffet supper was enjoyed by all.

While eating, we had a very nice treat. Otis Beck and his band from

Temple stopped by and played several numbers. This is a new band. When they began to play, it didn't take long for couples to move out on the floor and start dancing. The music was very good and we hope to have them playing for dances in 1967.

Soon the games started. There was a very big attendance for the games and the meeting. It was a pleasure to see so many come out. We hope you will come out for the December meeting. Remember it will take place on Dec. 18th, at 2:30 p.m. Come early so we can start promptly at 2:30, because this is election time and it will take time to get everything done.

Also, come and help decorate the hall Friday night Dec. 2. Come as soon as you can get there.

Our Christmas party is on Dec. 17th.

You can come by the lodge on weekdays from 9 to 5 p.m., or on Thursday and Saturday evenings after 8 p.m. You can mail your check in (Attn.: Entertainment Committee) if you can't come by. I intended to report on a general cleanup at the lodge hall in October by 11 of the members, but because of a busy schedule I failed to do so. The hall was cleaned thoroughly inside and out. The grass was mowed, trees and shrubs trimmed, and the barbecue pit was given a good cleaning. The members brought their lunch, and although they worked rather hard, they seemed to have found it some fun, too. Those who came to help were: Bros. I am looking forward to seeing all of the children who were on the program last year and to all of the new members of the lodge and all of the children of Lodge 92. We had a wonderful program last year. The Christmas program is one of the most anxiouslyawaited activities of the year. Not only the children look forward to this day, but many of the adults begin the day by packing the fruit, nuts, and candy.

They have a regular assembly line; they prepare 200 or more of these snacks every year, and at the same time they enjoy the fellowship.

The children may make their own selection of talent for the program, poems, songs, piano, accordion, or any other selection.

Coffee, punch and cookies will be served after the program, and the sisters are asked to please bring seine cookies for the refreshments.

Also many thanks to the youth club for serving the food and the check they presented to the building fund. If these youth are our future leaders, Lodge 87 has nothing to worry about. They are a great little group and we are so proud of them.

Here's hoping that Ben Bolech makes some good soup from that guinea and invites Gabby over for some.

The attendance was very good. We are happy to see our attendance increase each month.

One thing is for sure about our Sweet Home lodge members: we sure do have some strong members. At least, one or two of them are strong — so much so that they picked up a Volkswagen and turned it around. Now, that is what we call strong! I have also learned that these two men have been going to a chiropractor ever since.

Maybe some "pivo" would help.

I am also glad to report that our organizer, Sister Helen Pavelka, has a great deal to do with the prospects of a youth club in Robstown, since she is kept busy writing insurance for young people. Congratulations, Helen, for your good work! Keep this up and Lodge 117 will have that youth club that we have wanted for several years.

In the last meeting a motion was passed that Lodge 117 have a Christmas program following the business session.

Members, I am urging you to attend this meeting. It is election time so come and nominate and elect officers of yoUr choice so that the good work can be carried on.

EXCERPTS OF MINUTES OF THE FOURTH REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE, SPJST Held at the office of the Supreme Lodge, Temple, Texas, Oct. 13, 1966 President Marek called the meeting to order at 8:15 a.m.

All members were present.

Secretary Urbanovsky read the minutes of the last meeting. The minutes were adopted with a minor correction.

President Marek distributed his written report in the meeting and commented on it orally.

President Marek reported on the various meetings he attended, and that he also attended the N.F.C. Convention in Minneapolis, Minn., Sept. 25, 26, 27, and 28, 1966. President Marek elaborated at length on the meetings and stated that it was stressed in the convention for all societies to report all fraternal activities in their local lodges and amounts contributed for fraternal and benevolent purposes.

Question was brought up concerning the payment of social security tax on the remuneration of local lodge officers. Attorney Kacir stated that lodge officers are not subject to the social security act, but should pay selfemployed tax with their income tax reports on any remuneration they receive.

Vice-President Hejny handed out his report and read it in the meeting which revealed that there were 1143

applications for $2,125,455 of insurance received for the past quarter and that a total of 2810 applications for $5,726,025 insurance were received for the three quarters ending Sept. 30th, 1966.

Vice-President Hejny reported that he was very pleased with the 2-month contest for the expense-paid trip to TIT' Convention. The result was 835 applications for $1,514,955 insurance.

The winners of the trip are: District 1 — Mollie Ewell, District 2 — Amelia Pokorny, District 3 — James Pavlicek, District 4 — Emil Holub, District 5 — Emil Herelica, District 7 — Frank C. Sacky.

The contest of winning the $100.00 award for the greatest increase in life insurance percentage-wise was won by District 2, District 3, and District 4.

They will receive $100.00 each toward a social function for the organizers in each respective district.

Vice-President Hejny further reported on the number of organizers' mee t i ng s he held over the state and other meetings he attended. He also reported on the NFC Convention he attended and stated that it was decided in the convention to abolish the section dues and lower the general congress dues, thereby saving our Order probably up to a hundred dollars.

Vice-President ,He j ny read a letter of thanks from LeRoy Cervenka and E. E. Cameron for the $100.00 contribution to Lodge 170.

Vice-President Hejny reported that an Insurance Management Institute will be held in Dallas in January. It was decided to allow Vice-President Hejny expenses to attend the institute in January, and also the meeting of National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Dallas on Dec. 5th to 9th, 1966.

It was agreed that State Youth Director, James J. Janousek, notify the District Youth Directors that the Supreme Lodge doesn't sanction the formation of youth councils. The Supreme Lodge feels that the youth activities are adequately covered on local, district, and state level and there is a danger of conflict in activities.

Secretary Urbanovsky read letters of thanks for the camping trip from the youth clubs of Lodges 30, 87, and 146, and a letter of thanks for a contribution to Heights Little League.

Secretary Urbanovsky announced that the Texas Fraternal Congress will be held in Houston on Oct. 20th and 21st.

of funds and heavy commitments not to accept any new mortgage loan applications until next regular meeting.

Treasurer Koliha referred orally to his written report which he distributed in the meeting, Treasurer Koliha reported on 22 delinquent loans and disposition was made.

Attorney Kacir checked with the directors on pending construction loans in his file and it was determined that about $140,000 would be ready to close within 30 days, and about $120,COG within 60 days. The balance of the $613s00 will be closed later than 60 days.

Director Kubena stated that he had nothing further to bring up and that he enjoyed the meeting.

Director Sralla stated that this is our last regular meeting of 1966 and that he enjoyed all of them and is looking forward to a prosperous 1967.

Director Vitek commented on the name plates on the past presidents' pictures, and stated that since this is our last meeting of 1966 he wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

Director Broz suggested that the members of the Supreme Lodge apply for personalized car license plates with the letters "sp,-ssa" embossed under the license number. It was decided to investigate this matter and if this is possible to have the plates made at the expense of the Order.

Director Holasek stated that he learns something new and progressive in each meeting and enjoys the harmony that exists.

Director Hanka invited all members to the District V meeting at Lodge 142, Houston. He stated that he enjoyed the meeting and the harmonious work that our growth denotes hard work by all.

Director Pokladnik reported that both Dallas lodges are already making preparations for the 1963 convention.

He invited all members to the District meeting at Ledge 25, in Ennis on Oct. 23rd. He further stated that lie enjoyed not only this meeting but all that he has attended.

The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

A little bit about our last bowling party. It was a terrific party for all.

Dear Readers, Many activities have been planned for the teens and youth of Lodge 88 for the month of December. The teen dances are going to be extra good ones, with a few surprises thrown in here and there. On Dec. 2nd, the "Blue Diamonds" will be playing. Clay Davis and James Paine are two of the members of this band. On Dec. 9th, the "Sandpipers" will be featured. The "Deuces Wild" will play on the 16th of December. On Dec. 21st, which is a Wednesday night, the famous "Coastliners" will be playing. A special admission mission price of $1 will be charged for this dance. On Dec. 30th, the teens will have their New Year's dance. This dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will last until 12 midnight.

The "Shandells" will be the special band for this New Year's danice.

Membership cards, to be used beginning in January, may be picked up at the check room counter beginning Nov. 25th. With this card, the teens and youth will only have to pay regular prices for the dances. Without the membership card, teens and youth will have to pay twice the cost of the dance. Example: With the card, you! only pay 75c for a regular dance. With-

out the card, teens will have to pay $1.50. As you can see, it would be to your advantage to apply for your membership card.

On Dec. 11th the teens and youth will elect officers for their separate clubs, As time draws near, the teens and youth are asked to begin to consider candidates for the different offices. Those elected must attend all or most of the meetings. The officers to be elected in both clubs are: President, vice president, secretary, treasurer, reporter, and possibly parliamentarian.

Several committees will also be organized.

On Dec. 18th, the teens and youth of Lodge 88 will present a Christmas program. Many of the teens and youth will participate in this program. During the program, special packages of goodies will be passed out to the children.

After the program, the teens and youth will visit Faith Home, where we will distribute toys and packages of fruit to the children there.

At this time, I would like to congratulate Gary Zaludek. Gary got his first 4-pointer of the season. The deer weighed in at 95 pounds. Congratulations, Gary!

On the other hand, Mr. Tom Caraway's deer is still running. What happened, Mr. Caraway? Have you tried salt lately?

BE WISE! I SPY! Did you know that EV's cat died? SS says, "Oh,the grief of it," and you know something, I agree! Maxine is at it again, RB! Did you know that there is a spy in our midst? I wonder who it is. JC is always winning something. Does anyone care to join "beat-it-out-of-JC" club. Maybe if we find out his secret, we too can win something. I wonder if he has connections? EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge 29, Taylor, wish to express in behalf of our members, our sincere sympathy to the family of our brother, JOHN HENRY KROPP, who passed away Nov. 7th, 1966, in a Taylor hospital at the age of 64 years.

On Dec. 8th, 1929, he married Mrs. Hermina Marek Pekar, who survives.

Others surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Johnny Lee Mokry, of Corpus Christi; a son, Marvin Kropp, of Bartlett; a stepson, Richard Pekar of San Marcos; a sister, Mrs. Matilda Buchanan of Thorndale; five brothers, Willie Kropp of Thorndale, Tom Kropp of San Angelo, E:d Kropp of Midland, Adolph Kropp of San Antonio, and Louis Kropp of Central Point, Oregon; and several grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 9th, in the Condra Memorial Chapel.

The Rev. John D. Baletka officiated, with burial in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Brother Driska, a retired farmer, was born June 3rd, 1883, in Austin County

and had lived in Bartlett prior to coming to Granger. Be was a member of SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church of Granger, and a member of the SPJET since June 13th, 1909.

In March of 1909 he was married to Miss Emma Fisher, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters Mrs. Elizabeth Joyce of Taylor and Mrs. Olga Schiller of Bartlett; two sisters, Mrs. Andrew Nemec of Granger, and Mrs. Tracy Boston of Austih.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 14th, at 9:15 a.m. in the Condra Funeral Chapel, followed by rites in the SS Cyril and 1VIethodius Church in Granger, with the Rev. George Tydlacka and the Rev. Patrick Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Granger.

RESOLVED by the members of Lodge Komensky No. 20, Granger, herein represented by the undersigned Special Committee, that condolences and deepest sympathy be extended to the family of our departed brother.

Brother Kocian was born July 30, 1898, at Engle. He spent most of his life in Fayette County. He was the son of John and Agnes Kocian. He was a retired farmer. He had been a member of our lodge for about 28 years, and served as our secretary for many years.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Agnes Kocian of Engle; a daughter, Mrs. Alton Jares of Bellaire; two sons, Edwin and Raymond Kocian, Jr., both of Houston; also six grandchildren.

Brother Kocian was preceded in death by his wife in 1938, and by a daughter in 1948. May our departed brother rest in Eternal Peace.

The first Czech pioneers came to Texas, not with the idea of material gain, but rather to have the privileges and rights of the American Constitution. Whole communities in Texas were founded by Czech immigrants, who came seeking freedom.

On Oct. 8, 1832, after a voyage of 48 days, the "Ship of Good Hope," with a young Czech, Dr. Antonin Michal Dignovity aboard, sailed up New York Harbor, and in 1833 the Czech immigrant rode horseback into San Antonio de Bexar.

He played, as a statesman, a part in the development of Texas and was an ardent advocate of education and believed zealously in the protection of state school lands. On several occasions he devoted himself to the process of restoring school lands to the state.

During the Civil War he left Texas because of his views against slavery and secession and remained in the

His property was confiscated but he recovered it later and sold the land to the government.

This tract of land is located in San Antonio on which the present Army Post of Fort Sam Houston is situated.

His old home was torn down in 1926 when the ground on which it stood was turned into Dignovity Park. .His death was recorded in San Antonion, April 22, 1876, 42 years after the date of his arrival in Texas, Surviving at his death were his widow, five sons, and one daughter. The sons were Anthony Francis (Frank), Edward Lucein, Henry Louis, Charles Leonard, and James Victor; the daughter, Imogene Teresa. One son Albert Wentzel, the second in age, was killed Feb. 25, 1872, at Piedras Negras, Mexico, while serving as a soldier in the army of the Patriot Juarez.

One little daughter, five years old, while gathering flowers, was bitten by a rattlesnake and died within a few hours. A brother with her at the time was also bitten, but ran quickly to the house where the oldest brother, Frank, was summoned to administer first aid.

The brother cut the wound open with his knife and sucked out the blood.

The baby sister came home later and said that she, too, had been bitten, but it was too late to counteract the deadly poison. The father was hastily summoned from his office and he came, bringing with him another physician, but the child died within a few hours.

The name of Anthony Francis Dignovity, oldest son of the pioneers and born before they came to Texas at Illinois Falls, Ark., stands indelibly written on the scroll of state and national activities. Being a civil engineer he found wide scope for his activities.

He had to his credit the founding of several towns and communities and one county in the state. He laid out the town of 13rackettville in Kinney County, founded the town of Del Rio, and was instrumental in organizing Val Verde County, acting first as deputy sheriff, then as sheriff of that county.

Dignovity acquired large tracts of ranch land and sold the railroad the site for the high bridge across the Pecos near Del Rio. He laid out a town near the railroad at this point which he named Pecos but which never developed.

He was appointed by President William McKinley as a special agent of the United States in civil affairs to

Returning from this post of duty in 1909, Mr. and Mrs. Dignovity took up permanent residence in San Antonio.

- SPJSTIMPOR,TANT FAMILY PAPERS, Insurance companies, banks, attorneys and government agencies report that a staggering number of important family papers are lost each year.

For example, an estimated 300,000 life insurance policies are lost annually, says Miss Joy Arrington, Extension home management . specialist. Fortunately, these policies can be renewed in about 30 days, but sometimes even this delay can be upsetting.

To help avoid the difficulties and actual money loss that can occur because important papers are lost or destroyed, it is advisable to review regularly where and how you should safeguard them.

According to Miss Arrington, a bank safe-deposit box provides the best security for vital records, particularly those which might not be replaceable in their original form or would reonire considerable time and expense for replacement. These include birth, baptismal, marriage and weath certificates, divorce and adoption papers, property deeds, military discharges, stocks and bonds (if not left with a broker), mortgages, automobile bills of sale and titles, household and personal property inventories, and passports.

Other important papers should be kept at home in a suitable fire-resistant container. These include equipment and appliance warranties, guarantees and instruction books, medical records, Social Security records and insurance policies.

The original copy of your will should be left with your attorney. In Texas, the safe deposit box is sealed upon death of the renter and is not opened until the will is probated.

In both safe-deposit box and home storage containers, have a list of what is kept in each place. Also list the names and address of persons, compaSTORING

nies and agencies who can help replace particular records or provide copies in case of loss or damage.

POVERTY DECLINES WITH EDUCATION Poverty is more widespread among Spanish-Americans in Texas than in other Southwestern States.

The 139,663 families of Spanish surname in Texas whose incomes were less than $3,000 constituted nearly 52 per cent of all Mexican-American families in the state and 57 per cent of all poor Latin-Americans in the five states of Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texae.

'These are among the findings of a study recently completed by W. K. Upham and D. E. Wright of Texas A&M University's Department of Agricultural Economics and Sociology.

Since the average Spanish-American family had 4.6 members compared with 3.2 for Anglo-white and 3.4 for Negroes, the relative economic and social deprivation would appear even greater for the Latins, says the researchers.

Analyzing the 67 counties with the largest Latin populations, containing 93 per cent of the Spanish families, Upham and Wright found the incidence of poverty ranged from a low of 18 per cent in Jefferson County a o high of 83 per cent in Dimmit County. In every case the Spanish-American poverty rate was higher than that of Anglo families, and in 13 cases the Spanish family poverty rate was at least three times as high as that for the remainder of the population.

The researchers urge that attention be directed to the educational approach to poverty, among others, since their study shows a clear relationship between poverty and the lack of education.

No real progress is likely to be made unless a way can be found to raise educational levels among the state's least educated major group, conclude Upham and Wright. They believe the problem may best be approached at the local level.

A child first needs shoes when he begins to stand. ,High laced shoes are best, because they provide ample toe room and have flat pliable soles made of leather.

Summer shoes or play shoes should provide the same support as shoes worn to school or for dress wear.

Sneakers and canvas shoes, which do not give as much support as other shoes, can be worn for short periods of time.

As every parent knows, young feet grows rapidly. The National Foot Health Council recommends that new shoes shoUld be provided for youngsters often.

To insure a correct fit, have both feet measured for length and width, with each foot bearing weight, each time a pair of shoes is purchased.

Straighten the child's toes and socks.

The correct size should fit the larger foot. Allow 1/2 to 3/4 inch between end of the toe and end of the shoe.

The direst part of the foot should fit into the widest part of the shoe.

The arch of the shoe should fit well up under the arch of the foot. The heel counter should bug the heel. It should not slip up and down when the child wolks.

The toe box should be high enough to clear the toes, and the toe of the shoe should be rounded. Take your time selecting a child's shoe. Consider fit before style and appearance. A good fitting shoe does not have to be "broke in."

Per-acre land values in the irrigated farming areas of the lower and upper Rio Grande Valley and southern High Plains seem to be closely correlated to agricultural production and net farm income. But this dependence on agricultural conditions was not evident in other sections of t hestate, he noted.

Factors external to agriculture seemed to have a great influence on land values in other sections, Andrews said.

Prices have steadily increased unlike the fluctuations noted in the Rio Grande Valley and the southern High Plains.

The specialist said the closeness and adequacy of recreation, hobby type of farming , sp eculatio n, investment, and scenic beauty have strongly influenced values in other parts of the state.

These influences are important because of the population centers located within the areas, improved transportation facilities, higher incomes and increased leisure time among area residents.

The further importance of city effect is pointed up by the fact that 15 per cent of the buyers in the study lived in Hands, Dallas, Tarrant and Taylor Counties.

In East Texas the upward trend was aggravated by the purchasing of a half-million acres of land for reservoirs. The displaced landowners desired to stay in the area. They entered the market for land, contributing further pressure to the demand for acreage in that area, Andrews said.
