FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK THIS, THAT, AND THE OTHER The shape of our economic future, combined with the changing structure of the nation's population, will open up new opportunities and wider horizons for workers in various age brackets. And women with the required talents and abilities are likely to be a particular beneficiary of this development. Promotion of women to the management level is becoming more and more frequent in many fields of economic activity. But then, the barriers have long since been falling to occupational advancement for the distaff side. Women today make up over a third of the working population, the highest proportion an record. And while they still represent only a small part of the executive-managerial group, Census Bureau figures show that during the Fifties the number of women executives showed a growth rate over double that for men in all fields combined. Usually large gains occurred during the period in the insurance and real estate classification, banking, and other finance. In short, the women are "in," and they intend to stay there. • • Life underwriting is hard work. It requires intensive thought and effort, and it is filled with heavy worries and many dissappointments. So is every other job that is worthwhile! But there are rewards — great rewards! Can

there be any finer reward to a life insurance salesman than to see an older man or woman set up in comfort for his or her remaining years? There is much satisfaction in knowing that it was the life insurance, the one YOU sold them, that is making it all possible. There is perhaps still a greater reward, and that is the one that comes when one eases the troubles of the present and protects the futures of our young people. Benefits to the elderly can continue for but a few years, but benefits to the younger people go on and on. Their insurance plans will guide, even determine, their entire future. The world will be made a little better because of the young talents that will be developed in higher institutions of learning and for the fruits of that development that will be

passed on to mankind. So if an insurance salesman becomes discouraged because of hard turndowns or even discourtesies, he should not let the pain linger long. Dismiss it and go on to the next prospect. The latest word from Austin regarding new car insurance rates is that the drivers with bad driving records will be penalized in the form of higher insurance rates. The plan will become effective August 1, 1967. There are no provisions for lower dates for careful drivers, but lower rates for them could come as an indirect result. Penalty points will be assessed for speeding, causing accidents, DWI, hit-and-run driving, driving without a license, and a number of other serious offenses. By 1969, penalty points accumulated over a three-year period (except for speeding) will be used to raise a driver's insurance rates, but only offenses between August 1st, 1966, and August 1st, 1967, will be applied to 1967 policies. Forty-two per cent of last year's traffic fatalities were caused by speeding; 39, per cent by drinking. State Insurance Board Chairman Hunter McLean said this "plan can assist in putting the brakes on our state's disgraceful traffic toll." • • At an electrical show a number of years ago, Thomas Edison was guest of honor.
