Wednesday, May 25, 1966 TkIE FIRST MEMORIAL DAY When Memorial Day was first ob served in 1868, San Juan Hill, Verdun Dunquerque, and Korea still were tint familiar names to most Americans.

They were honoring men who ha died in their own land at the hand of their own countrymen in defense o "one nation, indivisible."

What was the first Memorial Da like?

Major General John A. Logan ha proclaimed the holiday, according t World Book Encyclopedia. The Gran ' Army of the Republic which he corn manded was leading the tributes witl services at Arlington National Ceme tery. Just across the river in Washing-{ ton, D. C., President Andrew Johnson was probably celebrating the end of his impeachment trial four days earH er. He had been acquitted, but Iii enemies, the Radical Republicans, were firmly in control of R,econstructiorl and determined to punish the South.

The old Southern aristocracy, too had to make adjustments. Its land had been ruined, its economy was near collapse and its social traditions had, been overturned.

The picture was more cheerful in the North, where Harriet Beecher Stowe author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was now writing stories about New Englanc life. While the war had shattered the South, it had brought booming prosperity to the North. Men who financed the Union cause and manufactured its weapons and supplies became millionaires and at the same time, sueeded up the process of industrialization.

There were still echoes of war on that solemn day. While graves were being decorated with flowers, Irish republicans in the United States were plotting to take over Canada and hold it as hostage for the freedom of Ireland. Cubans were just beginning- a ten-year rebellion against the Spanish that - would soon win the official sympathy to the U. S. House of Representatives.

But most Americans had put thoughts of war behind them. They were looking westward to the Great Plains and to the "manifest destiny" of the nation. Minces had started the surge west. Now the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railways were nearing their meeting at Promontory Point, Utah, which would mark the completion of the first trans-continental railway. The railroads would bring in settlers and equipment. They would carry hack to Eastern markets the herds that Texas cattlemen were be-

Wednesday, May 25, 1966 ginning to drive north. Farmers would follow the cowboys, respectable towns would replace the rowdy camps Bret Harte was immortalizing in such stories as "The Luck of Roaring Camp," and the frontier would disappear.

The stage was set for the emergence of the Union, cemented by the dead who were being memoralized on that May 30th, as an industrial giant that would spread its bounty across a continent.

Brother J. J. Stalmach of Smithville was recently awarded a plaque, designating him as the "Outstanding Furniture Dealer of District Eight," which comprises the city of Austin and surrounding territory. He was presented an Award of Merit. He was in a contest with 16 other districts in the state.

He has been a member of the Retail Furniture Assn., for over 40 years.

Brother Stalmach has been a member of SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar, for over 50 years, and a hard worker for the lodge. (Information courtesy V. H. Barina).

• • Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Macha, the former Hattie Matus, of Lancaster, are the proud parents of a baby girl, Denise Renee, born in Methodist Hospital in Dallas on Monday, May 9th.

Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Otto Matus of Waco, and members of Lodge 66, Waco. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Louis Macha of West, also members of Lodge 66. Great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Matus

Ingleside Mother Of The Year, Sister Ruby (William) Kucera and her family.

The two oldest sons attend Texas A&I College at Kingsville, David is a senior in high school; Evelyn is a junior; Andrew is a sophomore; Jimmy a freshman; Janie is in the 5th grade. The entire family are members of SiPJST Lodge No. 56, Anton 'Cermak, in Corpus Christi. Mrs. Kucera is the daughter of the late Frank Mikeska, SPJST organizer from Abbott, Texas. SISTER RUBY KUCERA VOTED "MOTHER OF THE YEAR" Mrs. Ruby Kucera from Ingleside, Texas, was chosen as "Ingleside Mother Of The YeYar." Sister Kucera was selected from a list of 11 nominees from the Ingleside area She will reign as Mother Of The Year from May 8th, 1966 until Mother's Day, 1967.

In addition to the heartwarming realization that she is well-regarded by students, teachers, and church members, Mrs. Kucera will benefit in a material way for her being selected for the honor. Ingleside businesses have joined in showing their appreciation for the " mother-of-the year" by do-

nating many useful and valuable prizes. (It should be noted that none of the businesses have anything to do with the judging of the selections, they just want to show their appreciation to the ultimate winner.)

Frances Vlha, 88, passed away in Dayton, Texas, on May 9th. Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery in Harris County. Sister Vlha was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 91, Crosby.

I, stopped in the printshop last Saturday for a brief visit. He was accompanied by Mrs. Mary Andrews and daughter, Beth. They were on their way to Waxahachie for a picnic.

George Dujka, 69, passed awa y in Chicago, Illinois, on April 20th. Interment was in Bethania Cemetery in Lyons, Illinois. Brother Dujka was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 126, Ross; near West.

"When someone is in need or is sick, she is always the one to show up with never an empty arm and always a sympathetic ear to give. She thoroughly enjoys people and life. Though she is a quiet person, she is always ready to listen and lend sound advice."

ii;PA1,,ON ANN SHARON DOLEZAL IS CLASS VALEDICTORIAN Being class valedictorian seems to run in the Dolezal family. Following in her brother's footsteps, Sharon Ann Dolezal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Dolezal, all members of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, was recently named valedictorian of her graduating class at James Madison High School in Houston. Sharon is also winner of the Mary Gibbs Jones scholarship. Sharon plans to enroll in Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches and major in home economics.

While in high school, Sharon has received $2,500 in scholarship and academic awards. Sharon was a member of numercus high school organizations, and was very active in extracurricular activities. (Last year, Sharon's brother, Franklin, was valedictorian at the same school).

LODGE NO. 80, HOLLAND Dear Brothers and Sisters: It has been quite a while since we had anything in the Vestnik about our Lodge Tyrs here in Holland. To begin with, may I state that we are adding new members to our lodge every month.

We have just completed a modern, enclosed barbecue pit and stand, made of the same tile the hall is. We will be using it for our annual picnic on Sunday, May 29th. I would like to invite the membership from the surrounding lodges to come and help us celebrate our 17th annual picnic on that date. There will be plenty of barbecued beef, plate lunches, meat to go, refreshments, etc. There will be games for young and old, starting at 1 p.m.

Supper will be served at 5 and will continue until everyone is served.

There will be free dancing in the afternoon, with a big dance at night; music by Louie Steffek and The Versatiles.

This is a big event every year at Lodge 80, and we are expecting a big crowd.

I'll write more when I have more time.

Here is the date again: Thursday night, June 9th, with a covered dish supper at 7:30, followed by the meeting and a special program dedicated to our mothers and fathers. Don't miss out on this. Try to be with us the second Thursday in June. We are expecting you.

The film about Czechoslovakia was brought up in our May meeting, and a motion to have it here if possible was adopted.

The gardens, both vegetable and flower gardens, could use some rain right now, but of course, the farmers don't want it.

I want to remind you members that our next meeting for the month of June will be held on the first Sunday in June, June 5th. Make a note of this, and try to be there. The change is due to Father's Day. Our last meeting was poorly attended because of Mother's Day. We stayed at home, too.

Alfons Kubicek was buried today in the Catholic Cemetery here in Moulton. He was 77. He is survived by his wife (nee Dlouhy), three brothers, and three sisters. He was a retired farmer.

LODGE. NO. 88, HOUSTON

Dear Friends, We had good attendance at our monthly meeting. Good reports were given by Harley Cox for the Entertainment Committee, Della Kadlecek for the Birthday Club, Tim Kostom for the Dramatic Club, Jay Wilkinson for the Blue Room, and Alfred Hilsher for the Board of Directors, James Tully for the Swimming Pool, Wanda Elzner for the Youth, and Ernest Hanka for District V activities.

Wanda Elzner presented President Louis Harms with a check for fifteen hundred dollars from the youth and received quite an ovation! The members enjoyed the socia1 following the

meeting when delicious refreshments were served.

I hope you are planning to attend "Lodge 88 Splash Day" June 5th when our new swimming pool will be dedicated by his Honor, the Mayor of Houston, Louie Welch, at 10 a.m. A barbecued beef dinner with all the trimmings will be served from 11:30 on throughout the day; by now most of you know what good barbecue Buddy ;Henske and his crew make! In the afternoon there will be a swimming program consisting of swimming races and other events. There will be dancing from 5 to 9 p.m. to that famous Joe Patch Orchestra of Shiner! The swimming pool will be open and you can swim! What fun you can have just by 'corning to Lodge 88 on Sunday, June 5th, a historical day in the history of our lodge and our SPJST! There are still some tickets left for the Jan Garber semi-formal dance on Tuesday, June 14th; if you haven"t made your reservations yet, do hurry, so you won't miss dancing to this nationally famous orchestra!

Don't forget our Thursday night socials. The money made at these socials goes toward the swimming pool, so come and bring your friends.

This Saturday we have the famous Bay City Dutchmen of Corpus Christi.

They really can play the polkas and waltzes and also modern music. You can't find a nicer place to bring your friends to than our own beautiful airconditioned Chandelier Ballroom!

Johnie NAMES IN THE: Williams was one of the good helpers we had for the Lee Roy Matocha dance. I really felt badly when I saw I left your name out, Johnie! Marian and L. A. Mikes had charge of the very well-attended Knights of Dixie dance and had good helpers: Angeline and Rudy Miculka, Adele and Bill Hughes, and Joe Miksch! The many friends of our popular members, Sister Ida Hanka and Brother Alfred Hilsher, who have been ill in the hospital, will be glad to hear they are better! Itasca Cerny, Lillian Finn, and Rosa Lee Ruland are on the committee for collecting donations for the beautification of the swimming pool grounds; you can mail in your donations! Weldon Hendricks, Leslie Guyton and Louis Harms donated the beverages for the Social Hour following the meeting! "Happy Birthday" was sung at the meeting to Marie Caletka, Itasca Cerny, Josephine Hurl, Willie Mae Stang, . Agnes Lesak, Ruby Bauerkemper, James Hightower, Bill Vorn-

5 sand, and yours truly! James Tully is the manager of the swimming pool; he is a math teacher at Black Junior High! Annie Vale, Itasca Cerny, and Gladys Sembera make up the committee for getting help for "Splash Day" (Sunday, June 5th), and Rosa Lee Ruland will have charge of the meal tickets, and Dorothy and Dick Dixon the dance tickets!

Fraternally, Tillie Helmcamp —81,J51 LODGE NO. GS, WACO Meeting was called to order at 2.45 p.m., with President Edward Mazanec presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was given

by Donna and Kay Gerlich and Julia Slovak. They also gave the Lodge Pledge.

All officers were present. Mrs. E. M. Schiller was a visitor and we invite her to come again.

Secretary Rose Parma read the minutes of the last meeting. They stood approved as read.

Correspondence: A thank-you note was read from Bro. and Sis. Leslie Dungan; also a thank-you card from Sis: Clair Rinehart and family. A letter was read, asking if we would be interested in having a film shown at our lodge about Czechoslovakia. It sounds very interesting. It is in color and it is narrated in English. It was voted to send a letter that we would like to have it at our lodge. The youth would have it as one of their projeets and sell tickets for it. The lodge members will help them sell tickets. I hope we will be selected because I would like to see it.

A letter from Lodge 88, Houston, was read, inviting us to come to their "Splash Day" June 5th, when they open their swimming pool. Sounds cool and inviting, doesn't it?

A resolution from Bro. Clair Rinehart was read. A letter from Bro. Nick Morris was read about our American Patriotism Benefit Day. Bro. Morris was unable to attend because he was in Rosenberg for the district meeting.

The posters are printed and are being displayed. We have our guest speaker and Bro. Morris appeared on KWTX television, Friday, May 20th on Marvel Russel's noon hour program to advertise this event. We arc well on our way with the plans and our final meeting is May 26, at 1:30 p.m. The Choral Grotip will practice following the meeting.

6 Bro. John Kutni asked the Board of Directors to meet a few minutes after to lodge meeting for, some final details for clean-up day on Saturday May 21.

Bro. Frank Miller read the minutes of their last meeting.

Health Committee reported that Little Dean Jarosek is still in the hospital after being hit by a car. He was pretty badly hurt. We hope he is improving and will go home soon.

Sis. Libbie Parma reported for the youth. She said plans are well 9n their way for Youth Achievement Day June 26th.

Els. Jean Spence told of her trip to Dallas, Lodge 84, where the awards banquet was held. She said she really enjoyed it. The speaker was very good. She said the food was delicious and she really had a good time. Even though it was raining, the attendance was very good.

It was discussed and voted on to have a princess ball this year.

Birthdays for May are: Sisters Barbara Stanislav, Rose Mary Mynarcik, Peggy Lucille Martin, Tobie Hanus, and Cynthia Kay Marek; Brothers Leslie Dungan, Emil Hanu,s, Louis Kazda, Garry Moore, and Jerry Karlik.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

Sister Libbie Parma said the youth club will furnish beverages for the next meeting, which is June 19th, Father's Day. The lodge will furnish cold cuts and the ladies should bring sweets. It will also be game night. So let's all come out and celebrate Father's Day and have a good time.

New members are: Arnold August Gerik, Frank Henry Dvorak, Clara Mae Kutni, Michael James Kutni, Rudolph W. Cervenka, II. Welcome to Lodge No. 66! We are very glad to have you join us.

Door prizes were won by Sis. Marie Drews (adult); Linda West, 1st, and Cynthia Moore 2nd (youth).

Following the lodge meeting, the king, princess and duchess were selected.

There were three running for duchess: Kay Gerlich, Kathy Moore, and Julia Slovak. Kathy Moore was the winner. She will pick her escort.

Jean Spence is princess. Christopher Spence is king. These nominees will participate with other nominees in the contest on Youth Achievement Day, June 26th, at Lodge 66.

Splash and Swim with Us on June 5th!

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: We are calling on you to attend a big historical event which will take place at fabulous Lodge No. 88 on June 5th. For the first time in our lodge history (1910) and the history of the SPJST Fraternal Order (1897) our lodge will celebrate the opening of its new Olympic - size swimming pool (110 ft. x 49ft.). This beautiful swimming pool is the first of its kind to be built in our SPJST Fraternal Order.

It is one of the few pools in our lodge area to meet official Olympic specifications. The diving area follows the Olympic pattern, with one and threemeter towers with regulation 16 feet diving boards. The special large children's wading pool will be fenced for safety, and the extra large bath house will have the usual facilities, plus a concession stand. The pool is only 60 feet from our main air-conditioned building where the facilities of our famous Chandelier Ballroom, Blue Room, Red Room. tap room, and dining area will be convenient. The pool is loca ted in the center of a wooded area surrounded by pine, oak and magnolia trees with picnic tables and various sliding boards, swings, and other playing facilities for the children. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Our Lodge Stefanik 142 held its regular monthly meeting May 1, 1966, at 2:30 p.m., the first Sunday of the month.

President Brother Melnar welcomed everyone present and asked the youth club to lead the group in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag. We had a nice attendance.

We had 16 new members. They were: John Richuber, Steve Janik, Ida Starustka, Brian Starustka, Norman Joseph Meuth, Angela Gay Meuth, Patsy Ann Meuth, Vincent J. Starustka, Theodore Jacob Zahn, Alvin C. Kocian, Julie Kazmir, Patricia Ann Kazmir, Jo Ann Janik, Carol Lynn Janik, Janette Marie Janik, and Evelyn Annie Zahn.

We welcome you, brothers and sisters, in becoming members of our lodge.

On our sick list were: Sister Recek, and Sister Kunetka. We do hope you are feeling much better and will be back with us soon. Each were sent a get-well card.

On Sunday, June 12, our lodge will have a public barbecued beef dinner with all the trimmings. Dinner will start at 12 noon, and will be served until ? Meal tickets will be $1.25 for adults, and 75c for children. In the afternoon there will be entertainment and a cake walk.

So brothers and sisters, bring your neighbors and friends along, and spend an enjoyable day and evening at your lodge. Everyone is always welcome.

Wednesday, May 25, 1966 LODGE NO. 63, SWEET 'HOME Dear Members: President William Berkovsky called our last meeting to order in Siovacek's Ballroom. All officers were present.

(May 15th). Brother Jurica read the minutes which were approved as read.

Brother Godfrey Berkovsky is still on the sick list. Our good member, Bro. Josef Mladenka of Wied was not present due to illness. We all missed him. President Berkovsky read an invitation from Lodge 88, Houston, inviting all members to their "Splash Day" on June 5th. There will be a bar-beque dinner, and Joe Patek will play for the dance. A letter was also read from our District Youth Director, Sis. Elsie Brdecka. Our youth of Sweet Home is, taking more of an interest in our meetings. We had a nice group to sign up for our youth club. I'm hoping that by our next meeting, we will be able to elect youth club officers. So, if any of you haven't signed up, please do so at our next meeting and social on June 19th — Father's Day. More details on this later, but we will definitely have door prizes for the young and the adults, plus a cake for a lucky birthday winner for months April, May and June. There will be special prizes for - Father's Day by the Entertainment Committee. There will be a prize for the oldest father, a prize for the youngest father, and a prize for the father of the most children. This was one of the largest crowds we have ever had at one of our monthly meetings. The afternoon was enjoyed by all. Thanks are extended to the "Music Makers", and to all who came out. Honorary Chairmen for the event are the following distinguished Texans: U. S. Congressman Bob Poage, Robert W. Calvert, Chief Justice, Texas Supreme Court; Vic Hall, State District Judge; Ray Mormino, County Judge, McLennan County; George Nokes, Member, State Democratic Executive Committee; Edward L. Marek, President, SPJST; Jos. F. Holasek, Mayor of the City of West. Most of these dignitaries are expected to be present and share the speaker's platform.

Political candidates from both parties are invited to attend and be recognized. There will not be time for speeches.

"This is a fine opportunity for Americans from all over Texas to come and demonstrate their patriotism and loyalty to America and what she stands for. It is a good chance to stand up and be counted. Patriotism has not gone out of style, and we aim to show the world how we feel about it," stated Chairman Morris.

Capt. W. C. Grubbs Commanding Officer of the Waco Marine Corps Reserve Training Station, is coordinating all military aspects of the celebration.

EXHIBIT II. This exhibit is figured on accrual basis, as required by the State Board of Insurance. This exhibit itself takes a lot of time to complete, due to the fact that every item has to be figured separately and all the interest is calculated to the end of the fiscal year. This item shows a net gain from operation for the year in the amount of $135,258.26.

The $100,000.000 securities valuation reserves and the $50,000.00 special reserves are added protection to our policyholders.

EXHIBIT IV. This exhibit shows the increases and decreases in the mortgage loans, giving you a complete account by showing the number of farm and city loans and the amount outstanding.

EXHIBIT V. This exhibit explains the income from interest, dividends, and rents and royalties.

EXHIBIT VI. This exhibit is a complete breakdown of certificates issued during the year. We issued a total of 2,685 certificates for $5,707,174.00 insurance — from this amount we deduct 326 death claims, 73 maturities (representing endowments paid off, such as J. E., 15-year and 20-year, etc.), 148 expiry (this consists mostly of J.T. policies that are converted to adult class and also extended term insurance that expired), 434 surrenders (this consists of policies that withdrew, but have reserves. We pay off the member's full amount of reserves and cancel out the insurance risk), 272 lapses (policies that withdraw, either directly or through suspension and expulsion, but do not have any reserves). You will note that from the 2,685 certificates issued, we subtract 1,281 certificates (explained in the above paragraph) and this leaves us a gain of 1,404 certificates for $2,44.4,405.00 of insurance.

DISTRICT I To All Local Leaders and Youngsters of District I: I am just in receipt of a letter from State Youth Director James Janousek advising me that our trip planned to Six Flags is not according to our rules that read: "The selection of a place will be left up to each District Youth Director as long as it is a camp, park, guest or dude ranch, etc., or a place where all of the youth can go, and have equal activity. This outing can be to a place where all facilities are provided or a place where you can rough it."

I guess I misinterpreted this rule.

Therefore, be informed that we will not go to Six Flags as planned.

VtSTNtK with us. The by-laws of the youth club were read and questioned by the youth leaders and assistants. The attendance was good. Everyone had an opportunity to express themselves, and a lot of new facts were obtained.

Youth of piAi. i•t, IV, it is time to be thinking about entering the various contests to be held at our annual District IV meeting, which will be held this year in San Angelo. There will be nice cash prizes for all who enter.

Don't forget your crafts; there will be prizes for them, too — only cne entry per person this year.

Does any youth club in District IV wish to learn the Czech Beseda? If so, Brother Janousek will be glad to teach you; just let . him know.

The youth of District IV will go to Palo Duro Canyon State Park this year and camp for two days. The date has not yet been set, but it will probably be in July or August. This means that if your lodge has a youth club, you must earn 20 points if you are in the age group 6 to 12; 30 points in age group 13 to 19. If your lodge does not have a youth club, you must attend four lodge meetings or activities. You still have time to work so that you may attend this outing. ACHIEVEMENT DAY — DISTRICT III Dear Friends, With four successful seminars held in our district by Brother Janousek, youth activity should be well on its way with the beginning of the youth year — June 1st.

All meetings were well attended by youth leaders, as well as other interested members in both north and south portions of the district. The various changes in the program have been explained and should render a uniform activity in the SPJST. Further questions will be answered either by the state or district youth directors. Our district also has an assistant district youth director, Sister Frances Kudrna, a capable and enthusiastic person. She will be of much assistance in the new program. Our district director, Brother. Sid Pokladnik, has attended all of the seminars. His interest is very valuable to youth work. Our district officers, headed by brother Rudolph Zalman, and the Youth Council with Johnny Krizan, YOUTH

13 president, also benefit our efforts in having good youth activity.

Our youth and their leaders will note that their new year is beginning June 1st. With new by-laws for the clubs and an expanded program you should have an enjoyable year. As with all changes, you may find things you do not understand. If you note any unworkable rules please notify me in order that we may make needed changes in the fall meeting. I will work with you to make your work easy and enjoyable.

We are hopeful that Lodges 92, 154, and 135 will get their interested ..oung people organized in youth groups.

Lodge 135 will meet on June .12 at 2:30 p.m. to organize their Youth-Teen Club. They have a fine list of youth and can reap many benefits if they have a club.

Note these district activities: Youth Council meets at Lodge 35, Elk, Saturday, May 28 at 1:30 p.m. All club presidents and delegates are urged to be present. All youth leaders are invited to attend.

The May Fete followed the pattern of scheduled events, and also some unscheduled events, such as the delay in getting started because one young lady (duchess) forgot her gloves and dashed madly back home to get them; also the appearance in the court of our canine friend (Lad-a-dog), who threatened to trip the duchesses as they were being announced.

We were so pleased to have Brother Joe Hejny and Mrs. Hejny with us, and thank them for taking pictures of the royal court.

Also my sincere thanks go to Mrs. Marvin Matcek and her daughter Rebecca Ann for the beautiful birthday cake. It was a big surprise to me and also very delicious. Thank you both.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON (Delayed for Lack of Space) Dear Readers, The "Surf Knights" entertained 435 teens this past Friday, April 29th. This group has been together for a long time. This can be established by the fact that the "Surf Knights" have just released their first record. The two songs on this record are "You Lied" and "Broken Heart," The teens would like to wish the "Surf Knights" the best of luck on their new record. The members of this group are: Dean Cook, Tommy George, Gaston Roubon, Paul Torres, and Richard Wyatt.

As usual, we had a wonderful group of parents to help at this dance. I would like to extend a "thank you" to each and everyone of them. These adults are: Mrs. Itasca Cerny, Mrs. Viola Cox, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Dixon, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Fizner, Mrs. Dorothy Kowis, Mr. Larry Moody, Mr. I. J. Beginning with our May 6th teen dance, a few new rules have been established for us to follow. These rules were established by the new city ordinance enacted recently, and they MUST be followed. All teens 15 years and and older must present their birth certificate or an affidavit that has been signed before a notary public by their parents or legal guardian at the door before entering. These teens will be presented with a card that can be used at the remaining dances. No draft cards or drivers license will be accepted as proof of age. All your under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult or legal guardian who will remain within the building the entire

Wednesday, , May 25, 1966 dance. These parents do not have to stay in the ballroom itself, but MUST be in the building.

Since these rules are set up by the city, we would appreciate it if they are followed.

Teen and Youth meetings will be held April 13th, beginning promptly at 8 p.m. All teens are asked to be present at this meeting. Since these meetings are for the benefit of the teens, it would be to their advantage to be at these meetings. In our hopes for a bigger and better teen club, we need more active members. Gift Stars! Gift Stars! Does anyone have any Gift Stars? This seems to be the chant heard just about every time - a person turns around. But it's true! We NEED Gift Stars! The teens of Lodge 88 would appreciate all the Gift Stars donated to them. We have had many Gift Stars given to us, but in order to get the things we need most, we need a few more. Whether it be one Gift Star or a dozen Gift Stars, every little bit helps.

The 5th of June will be a big day for many of the people around Lodge 88.

The dedication of the pool by the Honorable Mayor Louie Welch will take place on this day. Dedication of the pool will be at 10 a.m. A delicious barbecue dinner will be served. There will also be booths for the children.

The "Druids" are coming to our May 20th teen dance. Although this is a new band to us, it has been said that this band is a good one. There's only one way you can make sure, and that is to come. How about it?

Dear Members and Friends: We have been very active, especially this last month. We have changed our meeting from Thursday to 2 p.m. on the regular lodge meeting Sunday, before the mother lodge meeting. Dear Members, We had our monthly meeting May 8. During our meeting Mrs. Novosad made a report about youth Achievement Day, and handed out entry blanks for it. We discussed our plans to have a cake sale on the first Saturday in June.

Dear Members, On Monday, May 2, the Taiton SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting.

The meeting was opened by President Bennie Krpec. Marian Dorotik led

VESTNIK the prayer, and Donna Srubar led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The president introduced the visitors and they were: Mrs. Lad Srubar, Mrs. Eugene Bubela, Mrs. Silvin Diumos, Mr. and Mrs. James Dluhos, and Mrs.' Pete Fucik. Special guests were Mrs. Angeline Mraz from Czechoslovakia, Mrs. Mary Baca, and Mrs. Sophie Drozd.

The minutes of the last meeting were read, and then the treasurer's report was given.

Old business was discussed about our trip to Granger. Then under new business, the talent show in Hungerford was discussed.

Then the meeting was adjourned.

We entertained our guests by singing Czech songs for them. Mrs. Sophie Drozd recorded them.

Before refreshments, Mrs. Mary Baca talked to us about Czechoslovakia, and how the people live.

After that, refreshments of coffee, punch, cake, and doughnuts were served.

Mrs. Mraz drew names for the door prize.

NO. 4, IIALLETTSVILLE Dear Readers, This is my first letter to the Vestnik but I hope to write more.

We had our meeting on May 8, 1966.

The meeting started at 2 p.m. The adults had their meeting first, then we had ours..

We had a large attendance and had visitors: Brother Nick Morris and his family, and Brother Jos Koliha, Jr., from the Supreme Lodge.

After the meetings we had a social and drew for the door prizes. The door prizes went to the following: (adult) Mr. Charles Holly; (children) Arlene Zak. The birthday cake went to Mrs. Charles Holy.

The next meeting will be on the second Sunday in June.

Wednesday, May 25, 196G LODGE NO. 146, GALVESTON Dear Members: Our district meeting was held last Sunday in Rosenberg. Our youth club had eight members on the youth program. All the numbers were good and everyone enjoyed them. My friend, Pam, and I did the "Martian Hop," but we had trouble with the record player.

I want to thank our youth leader, Evelyn Mattes, for putting me on the program; also Mrs. Helmcamp, Brother Janousek, Supreme Lodge officers and the District V officers for making all this possible.

I am waiting to start on some projects. Mrs. Mattes' hands are just too full now with the end of school, etc.

It was nice meeting all the youth at Rosenberg, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you again at the "Splash Day" at Lodge 88 on June 5th.

I must close now. I have band concert tonight, and tomorrow I have track. Wednesday the sixth grade has a winner party.

Fraternally, Eddie Hurta -SPJSTLODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, The regular teen and youth meetings of Lodge 88 were held May 13th. Getting shirts for our active members be came the main topic of discussion.

Bonnie Cox, vice president of the club, was asked to find out the details about getting these shirts.

The teens also discussed how they could improve the teen dances. Since the treasurer of the club was not present, dues were not collected. The meeting was then adjourned.

District V held its meeting May 15 at Lodge 81, Needville. The members of Lodge 81 provided a delicious meal for all those present. Checks to the teens for their outstanding work in the point system were presented. Bonnie Cox, an active member of Lodge 88, received a check for $105 for being state winner in this contest. Congratulations, Bonnie!

This past week many people have given me Gift Stars. Since there were so many, I am afraid I will leave someone out, so I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to all who did give me Gift Stars. When sending your Gift Stars by mail, please enclose your name and address. This week I received Gift Stars in the mail, but unfortunately, no name and address of the person sending them was enclosed.

At our meetings we are usually called to order by our president, Alton Veselka. Then we say the Allegiance to the Flag. After that we discuss what we might have for socials.

Saturday, May 14, we were finishing packing candy in beautiful, decorated coffee cans. They were, painted gold with flowers all over the cans. The Candy was chocolate fudge. We are planning to sell them.

After the meetings we have refreshments which are served by Linda Oberoff, Linda Christ, and Harvey Bryson.

Business discussed was primarily the Youth Achievement Day. Mrs. Parrna explained the different system this year in the talent and craft contests. She also distributed the entry blanks. The Pricess Ball was also discussed and it was decided that it would be held in July and would be based on ticket sales, as in past years.

Mrs. Parma also reminded the Youth Club member of the newspaper drive and earning points through this.

Mrs. Parma, in relation to the point system, stated that there was till the end of May to earn points for the contest. She urged everyone to try and earn some points. Mrs. Parma also encourage all the membres to take part in the Youth Achievement Day. Mrs. Parma also had a nice surprise for us when she announced that Mrs. Norma Pavelka was her new assistant.

After there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

UCII1E SE CESKY Lekce Trinacta — Lesson No. 13 Accent (stress) and Intonation, In this lesson, w will discuss some rules and guides to speaking correct Czech, and using stress and intonation.

1. In Czech, the accent is invariably on the first syllable: — PRA-ce, SKAkat, SICO-la.

2. In the case of 3 or more syllables, there is a secondary accent on the 3rd syllable: PRA-co-VA-ti, VZDE-la-VAci, ZA-palo-VA-ti.

3. One syllable prepositions form one single unit with the word following, and are always accented: Do Prahy (doprahy), po valce (povalce).

4. If the preposition consists of only one consonant v, z, s, k — it must be joined in a single sound 'with the word following k vim kvarn — ,not ke yam): V Novem Yorku (not ye Novem Yorku).

5. Before other groups of consonants these prepositions are said in full and accented. VE stiedu, KE mne, SE mnou, ZE gkoly, 6. Prepositions are pronounced in full if the word following begins with the same sound: VE Vidni, KE kostelu, SE sestrou, ZE zeme. The reason for this is because double consonants are pronounced as single consonants in Czech:: (Anna, cennY). A double vy or double kk are not pronounceable. However, in a word like nej-jemnelgi, the two j's are separated because nej is a superlative prefix. More on superlatives later.

7. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we not yield to the temptation to STRESS long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress.

8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech — its "musicalness"), that

is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above 3 languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather "flat" and monotone in character.

9. The outstanding feature of Czech speech is the contrast between long and short vowels, alternating in succession, giving it a rather staccato character.

Finally, this rule should probably be observed: if you're not sure which syllable is to be accented, don't accent any; this will be better than stressing the wrong one. Don't worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along.
