OUR YOUTH PROGRAM FOR 1966 (Editor's Note: This week's front page is being devoted to a very important topic: that of our youth, and what programs we have in store for them in 1966. Much work has gone into this program. It behooves us all to read this carefully and strive to fulfill its aims.)

INTRODUCTION Here we are with our program for 1966. Due deliberation was spent composing our program to benefit all of our youth and to create new incentive in all our members. The proposals were drafted and sent to the district youth directors and we met in December.

After a very successful meeting the pro posals were re-drafted and sent to our officers and directors so that when they met in January, they were familiar with our proposals. After they met, our proposals were again re-drafted to arrive at our present program for 1966.

In all meetings and consultations, I recevied the utmost cooperation and help. In all cases, there was much enthusiasm and hopefulness for an even more successful 1966.

And so, here is our program for 1966: Revision of present point contest into four separate contests in order to achieve more interest on more levels.

General Contest Rules For All Contests

1. Everyone will be subject to the same rules and regulations..

2. Failure to comply with any rule means immediate withdrawal from contests and second place winners will be replacements.

The point contest, youth, Teenager of the Year, Club of the Year, and Youth Leader of the Year will be conducted as follows: Contest of 1966 begins February 1, 1966 to May 31, 1966.

Deadline: Entries must be in State Yuth Director's Office no later than June 15, 1966.

Awards will be presented at District Youth Activity Days and State Youth Activity Day. Contest for 1966-67 begins June 1, 1966 to May 31, 1967.

1. State Youth Director to publish the standing of all contests from the first and third reports. Noting 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place.

2. Revive Youth News Bulletin and send to all active youth members. Hold contest to determine name of Bulletin.

Selection of winner by President, Vicep resident. and State Youth Director.

Small token to all submitting the winning name, and first one submitting winning name gets special prize.

3. Cut a record of briefer version of Ceska Narodni Beseda (eliminating) most of the repeats) and supply to clubs dancing Beseda.

4. Crowns and trophies for all district contests will be ordered through the Supreme Lodge.

5. Seminars for Youth Leaders, conducted by State Youth Director or other qualified person, (exchange of ideas, explain contests).

6. Youth Activity Calendar in Vestnik.

7. Have all letters pertaining to youth in one section.

8. Prepare a set of general rules and by-laws to apply to all Youth Clubs.

General Outline will be sent by State Youth Director and each District Youth Director will compile and compose her own set. The seven "sets" will be discussed and get one set to comply with SPJST by-laws.

9. We would like to have a committee appointed for the Youth Camp as proposed in last convention if there isn't one.

10. Arrange tour through youth clubs or lodges, for Neil Douglas, world famous traveler, who has a two hour (uncensored) sound motion picture of Czechoslovakia taken in 1962. This film is highly interesting and educational for all members of the family.

Newsbriefs Jerry J. Valchar, 73, passed away Jan. 9th in the Youens Hospital in Weimar. At the time of his death, he was living in his home in the New Bielau Community. He had been married to the former Annie Malinovsky Burial was in the Weimar Cemetery. He is survived by five children, all members of the SPJST: sons Jerry E. of Temple, Johnnie of Albuquerque; daughters Ruby Rokyta, 011ie Kozlowski, and Milady Ermis; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Henry, of Oakland, and four sisters. His mother was the late Terezie Valchar, charter member of the SPJST, who died recently at the age of 103.

John J. Veiss, 75, passed away on Jan. 4th in Goodnight Memorial Hospital in Caldwell. Brother Veiss was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 7, Caldwell.

Vaclav Marek, 78, passed away in the Colonial Nursing Home in Schulenburg on Jan. 6th. Interment was in the Praha Catholic Cemetery in Flatonia.

Brother Marek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 21, Engle.

Josef Navratil, 78, passed away in Wichita Falls on Dec. 30th, 1965. Brother Navratil was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 76 in Wichita Falls.

• Ida Jaresh, 79, passed away in Schulenburg on Dec. 12th, 1965. Burial was in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Schulenburg. Sister Jaresh was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 31, Yoakum.

• Willie 0. Blazek, 57, passed away in Columbus on Jan. 11th. Interment was in the Hostyn Hill Catholic Cemetery in Columbus. Brother Blazek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville.

Frances Sebesta, 69, passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan on Jan. 4th. Sister Sebesta was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 100, Sebesta, near Somerville.

WINNER OF DANCE TROPHY The above picture shows Victor J. Gerlich and Lorine Chilek with a trophy presented by the J. J. Ryan Family in memory of the late Elo Veselka at the Bill Mraz Ballroom in Houston. Victor and Lorine were awarded the trophy as a result of being the "Outstanding Polka Dancers of 1965" at the ballroom. The trophy was presented on Jan. 8th, 1966, in the presence of over 800 people.

Brother Gerlich is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home, where he holds office as vice president of the lodge and is lodge reporter.

GALVESTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: As your new president, I would like to express my appreciation to the officers of the past year for their efforts, and ask for their continued cooperation in the future. On behalf of Lodge 146 I will also ask the cooperation of the officers who will be serving with me for 1966. They are:

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS OF LODGE 24, CYCLONE Dear Members: During our last meeting, there was considerable discussion regarding the deteriorating condition of our lodge hall. I have been appointed to bring this to the attention to the members who were not present.

It was decided to discuss this matter further during our next meeting which will be held Feb. 13, at 1:30 p.m. We are expecting the presence of all interested members, and if opinion is favorable, perhaps we can talk over the possibility of rebuilding, or any other fruitful suggestions.

Such a move has been postponed for quite some time. All the while, lodge activities have been going down — along with our building. This, of course, can be expected because when facilities become inadequate, we can observe that activities go down.

With over a thousand members, we have the largest membership of any lodge in this area. It is my sincere hope that this coming meeting will mark the beginning of a reactivation of our lodge. We could easily make our lodge a center of many enjoyable activities, to suit different tastes.

We need a youth club for our young members, which for them would mean parties, games, and other activities where they could associate with others under decent, supervised conditions. I am sure that our District and State Youth Directors would help us i n every way possible with a youth club.

We need to organize activities for our adults. For the adults, this could be entertainment, socials, suppers, card parties and many other activities where we could get together and visit with each other under the friendly atmosphere of our lodge. If our lodge

If any of these ideas appeal to you, or do not appeal to you, please come to our meeting. We need your opinions, suggestions and ideas.

East Bernard, Texas Dear Editor: By means of the Vestnik, I wish to announce the forthcoming meeting of the Czech National Cemetery Assn. here in East Bernard on Sunday, Feb. 13th, at 4 p.m. at the SPJST Hall No. 28. The meeting will be held after the regular meeting of Lodge 28, SPJST. This will be an important meeting. since we will have an election of officers, including that of a new sexton for the cemetery. After 16 years of service, I am giving up the job due to my poor health. All interested people should come and state their views on how to beautify the cemetery grounds and improve the association in general. We older ones are passing on and it is time some of the younger ones took over some of the duties. I will receive your dues until Feb. 13th, and after that, I will pass them on to the new officers. See you all on Feb. 13th.

LODGE NEEDVILLE NO. 81 Committees were named to start making plans for the District Five meeting, which the lodge will host on May 15, at the American Legion hall in Rosenberg.

The date of our April meeting has been changed due to the conflicting date with: Easter Sunday, and it was agreed to hold our meeting the first Sunday in April. It will be announced again later.

LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS (Entertainment Committee; On Wednesday, Dec. 29, the Entertainment Committee, consisting of the old committee and the new, held their annual Christmas party and meeting.

This included all the officers of the lodge and their families. For supper, ham was furnished and everyone brought a covered dish.

After the meal, the Entertainment Committee held their organizational meeting. The outgoing chairman. Bob Wright, explained the responsibilities of the Entertainment Committee to the new committee members. Afterwards, a chairman and assistant chairman were elected. Then, the members volunteered for the remaining positions of the committee. The new Entertainment Committee consists of: Leonard Baleja, chairman Emil Petr, assistant chairman and hall rental Jerome Rejcek, bartender Weldon Hackworth, assistant bartender Wanda Kopecky, kitchen (special) Cecilia Kretsinger, kitchen (regular) Faye Rejcek, secretary Hattie Macha, reporter and kitchen (assistant, regular) Tom Paroski, door Randolph Scott, assistant (door) Leo Rejcek, advertising and oichestra hiring Johnny Pokladnik, decorations Olivia Rejcek, decorations assistant The meeting was adjourned.

On Friday, Jan. 14, the Entertainment Committee held their second meeting. The coming events for 1966. were discussed. It's going to be a very exciting year.

The Original Six Fat Dutchmen from New TJ1m, Minnesota, will be playing at Lodge 84 on Saturday, Feb. 5. The dance will begin at 8:30 and end at 12:30. Admission will be $2 per person.

Why don't you come out and hear the nation's No. 1 Polka Band?

NTESTNIK On Sunday, Feb. 20th, Lodge 84 will celebrate its 56th anniversary. Preceding the celebration, there will be an Anniversary Dance on Saturday, Feb. 19th, from 8:30 to 12:30, with music by the Polka Peppermints. Then on Sunday, there will be an Anniversary Dinner beginning at 12 noon. A delicious menu has been planned, and the sisters of the lodge are asked to please bring sweets. Dinner tickets will be 75 cents for children, $1.00 for teenagers and $1.25 for adults. After dinner, a program will be presented for the members and visitors. The youth will present a short program; there will be a guest speaker and recognition of officers. Then awards will be presented to the "Outstanding Brother and Sister of the Year 1965."

The Choral Group will close the program with a few of their selections.

Come out and help make this 56th anniversary a huge success.

In conclusion, I would like to ask all the members of Lodge 84 to come out and support these functions. We need your help and support for the betterment cf our lodge.

Bro. John Kutni gave his report. Lodge 66 is paid up for 1965 and are well on the way for 1966.

We have two new members. They are Kevin James Stuckly, and Carole Marie Cervenka. We are very glad to have you.

Bro. Frank Parma, reported for the trustees. Bro Frank Miller read the minutes. They have drawn up specifications for the new bridge. They are also drawing the blue prints and will be ready to accept bids. Bro. Frank Parma called a meeting for Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m. so the plans can be approved.

The Ticket, Bar, and Kitchen Committee chairmen gave their reports and they were all very good.

Sister Libbie Parma gave her report for the Youth Club. The youth have a had a good year. They gave $15 to the Be An Active member! rest home in Taylor; $15 to the Mary Jan Garber Orchestra at Linden Hall Sue Moore Fund; and they gave three — March 9th. large baskets of food to three needy families for Christmas. They also gave LODGE 66, WACO a mattress to an elderly lady who was Our last meeting was called to order ill. Sister Libbie said she received a at 2:45 p.m., with President Edward phone call from one of the families Mazanec presiding.

The Pledge of Allegiance was given thanking them for such a large basket.

Roll call of officers showed that Hilma Macha„ Donna Trojan, and Libbie Parma. all were present.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to them.

We then had installation of officers.

The books have all been audited and Bro. Henry Breitkreutz presided. After are in good shape. taking the oath, all were seated and A donation was taken on the floor, Bro. Breitkreutz spoke a few works.

Bro. Nick Morris spoke about some of the special projects we are working on for the coming year. He has been checking into and getting informatibn so we can get started. We hope we can carry them out and be successful with them. Two of these projects are the Jan Garber dance on March 9th, and the Wayne King dance early in October.

This committee made possible the good start we have on our Swimming Pool Fund, since all the money made on these Thursday Night Socials 'goes for our swimming pool. As you know, construction has begun, and it is definite that the pool will be open at the beginning of the swimming season. Plans are already being started for a great "Lodge 88 Splash Day" on June 5th!

Congratulations to District Queen Bonnie Cox who was appointed editor of the "Panther Pennant", a school newspaper at Black Junior High School. Bonnie got started in this field when she was reporting to the Vestnik for the Lodge 88 Teen Club, and someone at her school read her letters and recommended her for a reporter on the school paper. As Bonnie said in her queen speech, "So you see, you get benefits from the SPJST that you never dreamed of!"

More plans are being made for that great day — the First Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, Feb. 20th! A delicious barbecued beef dinner will be followed by a battle dance from 2 to 10 p.m. when Joe Pa,tek and the Danceables will battle it out! The children will not be forgotten, because there will be rides and free gifts for them.

Do make plans to be with us on Feb. 20th on this great occasion.

Bra. Ed Mazanec Sr., president of Lodge 66, Waco, installed the officers for 1966. After the installation he addressed the members, congratulating them, on the hall improvements. He also spoke on duties and traits of a good lodge officer. We wish to thank Bro. Mazanec for the privilege of having him as our master of ceremonies.

I wish to send my apologies to Sister Ruby Favelka. It seems she did not get credit for preparing a turkey for our Christmas party. I take full responsibility for this, because Sister Mary Beralek, our kitchen chairman, did give me a list of the ladies and her name was on it (Sister Ruby, so sorry).

Did you know that the stork almost shattered one of our organizer's policy-a-month record? Brother Edwin Holub was waiting for the stork to deliver his prospect and when the bird was not on schedule, Brother Ed had to hit the road to beat the deadline. Word is that the stork was delayed by some low-grade flight fuel.

Our organizers, Brother Holub, Brother Mach,• and Sister Norma Pavelka, had a good month recruiting the following new members' Charles M. Filler, Patricia Lynn Niekemp, Dale Denise Horton, Mark Jeffery Wood, Vernon Madison Wood, Joey. Albin pospisil.

We wish to welcome these new members and hope they will take part in all our lodge activities.

Our improvement program is rolling right along. The trustees are considering a new heating system at the present time, and the plumbing improvements are to be made as soon as weather permits,

President Henry Breitkreutz urged everyone to support the benefit dance on Jan. 16 for little Wayne Poldrack.

Wayne, who is 11 years old, received a head injury and has been hospitalized for quite some time. All proceeds from the dance will go toward his medical expenses. The youth club will sell sandwiches and other items at the dance as their part in helping little Wayne. By the way, Wayne is a nephew of Fiddle Slwingsters band leader, Ed Reinke.

SWEET HOME LODGE NO. 63 On Jan. 16th, 1966, at 2 p.m. our President, Wm. Berkovsky, opened our first meeting for 1966.

Brother Felix Jurica read the minutes. which stood approved as read.

All officers were present, including a very nice group of members. Thanks for coming out! Sorry, but we had to make room for a wedding that took place at the hall, and had to cut our meeting short. Hope to see all of you good members out next month. We want to be sure and have a vacant hall or some place to meet for our monthly meeting. This should not be hard to arrange since we always have our Meetings on the third Sunday of the month, and a social every third month.

So please make arrangements so that these meetings can be held properly.

I'm sure that the officers and members take special time out that Sunday to attend the SPJST meeting and then the meeting place is occupied by someone else. So let's make sure of our meeting dates in advance.

We had one member to transfer, and we're sorry to hear that Brother Martin Pesek is sick and in the hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Jan Garber and his distinctive dance music have been playing to huge American audiences for well over 30 years. He has been billed for many years as the "Idol Of The Airlanes."

His music is of the "sweet, music-witha-beat and melody" type. His style of music has not changed down through the years, which proves that people like it just the way it is. Many dance bands have come and gone, but Jan Garber is one of the few musical stalwarts with a tremendous following.

He will have completed a long Las Vegas engagement prior to his swing through Texas. His appearance at Linden Hall will be the only one in the Waco - Central Texas area on this tour, and the first in this area in a good many years. Garber and his orchestra are definitely at the top of the

The Kolache bake sale will again take place this year just like last year — on the first Saturday of each month, unless otherwise advertised.

The sisters first bake sale this year will be on February 5th (first Saturday).

The new lodge president , Louis Hanus, dropped in to visit with the ladies long enough to extend his New Year greetings along with a few words of encouragement and praise, and to keep on doing the good work that was done in the past. He also asked for all the sisters' support in the way of pastry for the 20th of February at which time the lodge will celebrate its first anniversary in the new home.

The Birthday Club Sisters are indeed proud to have presented the mother lodge with a check for $2,900,00, and hope that it won't be too long before they can do that again. With all your help and support, how could they do otherwise!

ANNUAL REPORT OF DIRECTORS We, the undersigned directors, examined all bonds and coupons, which arse kept in a safety deposit box at the First National Bank, Temple, Texas, on Jan. 10, 11, and 12th. We reconciled the income and expense in the books of the Supreme Lodge. We also examined the mortgage lonas and certificate loans. The following is our financial report.

FIVE AND SIX To further help our new program and to get beter acquainted with our youth leaders, we are conducting youth seminars in each district.

TAe first ,seminar was in District Six, arranged by Sister Elsie Brdecka, District Youth Director, held in New Taiton on Friday, Jan. 21, 1966.

The second will be in District Five, called by Sister Tillie Helmcamp. It will be hosted by Lodge No. 88, Houston, on Friday, Jan. 28. 1966.

I hope to get the dates very soon from the other four districts. The directors have been arranging these meetings since December, and they, of course, take time to get everyone together at one time. These meetings are necessary to get to know each other better. Not only can we learn from each other's successes but from our failures as well.

.i..ODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers, We held our first monthly teen meeting of the year on Jan. 14th. This was a special meeting because it was the first with our new officers presiding.

Rusty Benham began the meeting sharply at 8 p.m. The roll was called and the minutes of the last meeting were read. since there were no corrections to the minutes, we continued with our meeting.

We were very glad to see four new members join our club. They are: Beth Kruger, Larry Frazier, Alan Frazier, and Paul McLaughlin. We were also glad td have several visitors. There were: Janis Jurica and Margaret Hinkle.

For the remainder of our meeting we discussed our social for February.

We decided we would like to enter a float in the Fat Stock Show Parade and then go to the rodeo afterwards.

Rusty asked for volunteers to be on a committee for finding supplies.

Those that volunteered are Pat Bilski, Debbie Gill, Bonnie Cox, Frances Dixon, and Ruth Zaludek.

During this meeting we also discussed our plans for the first anniversary of the new lodge coming on Feb. 20th.

Wednesday, January 26, 1966 A committee for getting prizes was chosen. Those on this committee are: Bonnie Cox, Rusty Benham, Debbie Gill, and Yvonne Grissom.

Our new president, Rusty Benham, is taking a real interest in his new job and is really studying up on his parliamentary procedure. As his helper and parliamentarian Rusty chose Betty Jo Wavra. Betty's duty is to read up on the rules of parliamentary procedure and correct anyone at the meetings who is not following these rules. It is a big job, but I'm sure Betty will do a wonderful job as our new parliamentarian.

Since there was no other new business, the meeting was adjourned.

Feb. 4th is another big teen dance.

The talented "Vibrations," will be playing. We have had many new teens coming to these dances. We hope they will continue to come and we hope they will bring their friends.

EXPRESSION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned members of a Special Committee of Lodge Komensky No. 20, Granger, acting for and in behalf of our members, express herewith our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, MARIE JAROLIM. Sister Jarolim of Taylor pased away Sunday, January 9th, at the age of 79.

She was born July 15th, 1886 in Czechoslovakia and had lived in the Taylor, Circleville and Granger communities her entire life. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church of Taylor and the SPJST Lodge in Granger since March 12th, 1916.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Mary Huard of Toronto, Canada, Mrs. Frances Schimek and Mrs. Georgia Taylor of San Antonio, and Mrs. W. C. Brueckner of Taylor; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Czech cooks have long since been known as masters in the art of soupmaking — all kinds of soups. It seems to be a matter of national pride with them. Often they serve dumplings in them and everyone is happy.

One of their specials is liver dumplings in soup.

This recipe makes 24 dumplings.

1/2 pound beef liver 2 tablespoons margarine 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 11/2 teaspoons finely chopped parsley 3/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 3 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 egg 1 envelope sprin g vegetable soup mix Remove tough membrane from liver; chop liver very fine. Melt margarine in skillet; add onion and parsley and cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until onion is golden. Mix vegetables, bread crumbs, water, salt and pepper with chopped liver. Beat egg; blend into liver mixture. Shape into 1-inch balls; drop into boiling soup made with favorite reiipe or a packaged mix. Cover; boil gently 8 minutes.

(Note: Finely chopped garlic may be used in place of, or in addition to, the onion).

Items of Interest LIVESTOCK PRICE PROSPECTS ARE BRIGHT FOR 1966

Prospects for livestock prices for the year ahead are bright.

Ed Uvacek, livestock marketing specialist at Texas A & M University says lower cattle numbers, a smaller calf crop, and a reduced slaughter level should hold fed cattle and feeder calf prices above 1965 levels.

He adds that 1966 may well be one of the most profitable years since the early 1950's for sheep and lamb producers.

The specialist believes hog prices during the first half of 1966 will again establish new highs. A large production expansion of the spring pig crop could provide an over-correction on the number of hogs and force price levels during the last half of 1966 to levels slightly below those of last year.

Uvacek says the inventory count of cattle and calves on farms on Jan. 1 is expected to be down about one and a half million head from a year ago. He believes herd liquidations will continue through 1066 but at a slower rate, thus reducing the number still further on next Jan. 1. This, he adds, may well be the end of liquidation and the start of another build-up phase for a new cycle.

He noted that cow slaughter in 1965 was up about 26 per cent over 1964 and was a major faito • in the Jan. 1 inventory reduction figure. But there were other factors which added strength to the 1965 market; steer slaughter was down and heifer slaughter up and slaughter weights of both steers and heifers were down, thus reducing the total production of beef.

Uvacek expects cow prices to seasonally move higher into the spring and then slack off during summer and fall. The demand for replacements plus lower levels of imports strengthened cow prices during 1965, and will continue to influence 1966 prices, he says.

--SRTSTTURKEY IS STILL A TREAT

Although turkeys sold well during the recent holidays, the popularity of the bird for all-season use has grown so tremendously that many turkeys are still being offered at meat counters, reminds Mrs. Gwen Clyatt, Texas A&M Extension consumer marketing specialist.

Select a -whole bird or just a quarter of a turkey for a roast, she suggests.

Frozen turkey rolls also are a real treat, and so easy to prepare, carve and serve.

Fryers are available this week at economical prices. Some of this week's best beef values are to be found in round steaks and roasts, ground beef, arm and blade pot roasts and steaks, and beef liver.

Reports indicate that there will be little change in the price of pork for months to come. The old law of supply and demand enters the marketing picture here. Respite the shortage of this meat, there will be some scattered specials on selected pork items from time to time, the specialist predicts.

Money savers for your budget this week also include Grade A large eggs.

Now is a good time to compare prices of canned, frozen andfresh vegetables in order to determine the best values.

Fresh items in best supply include cooking greens, dry onions, cabbage and sweet potatoes.

Banana: continue as one of the best fruit choices. Other good values are to be found in grapefruit — especially by the bag — and in oranges, grapes, tangerines, apples and tangelos.

CRANES GET SAFE CONVOY FROM SPORTS

The comeback of the Whooping Cranes has been marked by wholehearted cooperation of the sportsmen, according to a spokesman for the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge where the rare birds spend their winters.

Migration back and forth between Austwell, Texas and the Canadian wilds necting area 2,500 air miles northward has been particularly respected by the countless thousands of hunters during the fall wildlife harvest season.

The refuge reported to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, it cannot recall any recent case of a Whooper being shot down, even though some of the majestic birds have disappeared.

Authorities believe they were the older cranes simply passing on to the Whooper happy habitat as a matter of normal attrition, The refuge spokesman attributed the hunters' cooperation to broad educational efforts, traceable in part to dramatizing the so-called Whooper Network, or the Whooper Club, created several years ago.

Thus the public interest, plus the increased number of professional wildlife observers, has combined to expand informational facilities about distinctive markings of the big white birds

Filing a charge against an intruder is rare, indeed, the authorities report.

They average one case a year, generally like the goose hunter who ignored signs forbidding retrieving of crippled geese, and now faces federal prosecution.

TATTLETALE FOOTPRINT

Police, investigating a murder, found the bloody print of a bare foot on the victim's bathroom floor, This print eventually played a vital role in convicting the killer, by placing him — unmistakably — at the scene of the crime.

Similar use has been made, more often, of palm prints. And most often, of course, of fingerprints. What all three have in common is a highly individual set of markings, made by the pressure ridges that corrugate the skin.

There is nothing new, at least with regard to fingerprints, in the realization that the markings are distinctive.

Various people of the world probably knew this even before the time of Christ.

What is new is the development of classification systems that make fingerprints easy to compare. This development, along with improved techniques for obtaining prints, has made fingerprinting a preferred method of identification all over the world.

Is there any chance that two people will have the same fingerprint pattern?

One scholar calculated that duplication would occur once in 64 billion prints.

But later studies call that far too cautious. Recently a fingerprint expert estimated that duplication is not likely to occur in 10,000 years. Up to now, of course, not a single duplication has ever been found.

Wednesday, January 26, 1966 Besides the virtue of individuality, prints also have the virtue of permanence. A person's print pattern is fully formed three months before his birth (Mark Twain called it a "natal autograph"), and remains unchanged until after his death. Although the print may vary in size, just as the person does, the pattern itself stays the same always.

So sophisticated is fingerprinting today that even a port of a print may be enough to establish an identification.

As a rule, experts figure it is sufficient of the suspect's prints and the incriminating prints are alike at 12 points of the pattern.

But if they should differ at even a single point, then the message is equally clear: This is positively not the right man.

WARDENS TOP 500 TICKETS IN ONE MONTH Thirteen tickets concerning boating safety violations were among the 501 written by Texas game wardens during the last month.

In the main, the cases involved hunting and fishing infractions but the comparatively few boating incidents were considered significant because of the seasonably quiet water sports activities.

Game wardens have just broadened their operational sphere under a 1965 state law empowering them to help enforce the new water recreational code.

The boating tickets last month were mainly for lacking life preservers for each boat occupant.

The arrest report drops a hint or two to the gun-conscious trade about the extra care needed now that the main seasons have ended.

Of the 501 cases listed, 98 were for hunting some species or another in closed season.

A Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman suggested that those still with hunting to do had better consult the Texas Hunting and Fishing Guides, or contact local department personnel, preferably the game, warden.

In the fishing violation registry, it was the same old story of no fishing licenses for an even 153 receiving tickets.

One person was tagged for trying that particular sleight of hand to save the $2.15 fee.

SHAMROCK CROW CROW HUNT TO BE SET One of the favorite off-season sporting events in the Texas Panhandle (a crow shoot) will be held again this year in February on dates to be announced soon, according to Game Warden George Farr.

This anual Wheeler County event, held during three weekends, attracts gunners from as distant as 500 miles.

And it never runs short of targets because wooded areas house an estimated one million "black bandits."

Warden Farr said no one had ever determined the total number of crows actually killed but estimated the overall bag runs into the "tens of thousands." Last year the senior champion killed 117 crows in one day, and his wife was runnerup with 113.

The warden added that since Shamrock residents "are widely known for their good sportsmanship," nobody ever bothers to estimate the number of shotgun shells used "It's a pretty good way to get rid of shells left over from the waterfowl and upland game season," said Farr.

He hinted, however, that local merchants managed to keep a good stock of hulls handy just in case. Also by the case.

The net increase in assets during 1965 added up to more than $8.9 billion, a larger gain than in any previous year. It represented an annual growth rate of 6.0 per cent, including newly invested funds, capital gains and reinvested earnings, plowed back into the economy.

Mortgage loans accounted for more than half of the net increase, due mainly to heavy demand for life insurance financing of new income-producing properties. For the first time in recent years, the total life insurance investments in residential and commercial mortgages exceeded the amount in domestic, corporate bonds.

The net earnings rate on life insurance investments (before federal income taxes) rose to an estimated 4.61 per cent, the highest average in 33 years. It compared with 4.53 per cent in 1964. The rise partly reflects an uptrend in interest rates because of the heavy demand for capital funds in 1995. It is also partly due to the maturing of older, low-yield investments and their replacement by new ones at today's higher yields.

The life companies' pre-tax dollar tarnings on investments in 1965 are estimated at a record-breaking $6.75 billion, or about $4'75 million higher than in 1964.

Derwood Johnson Seeks 2nd Term As McLennan Co. Judge

DERWOOD JOHNSON Derwood Johnson has announced that he will seek a second term as Judge of the McLennan County Court at Law. Prior to his promotion to County Court at Law on January 1, 1963, Judge Johnson served as Justice of the Peace of Precinct 1 during 1961 and 1962'. He was engaged in private law practice for five years before assuming public office.

During his first three years as Judge of the County Court at Law, Judge Johnson has disposed of more than 3,900 cases and has conducted 169 jury trials. Twelve of such cases have been appealed, and none have been reversed.

He has instituted, reforms in condemnation procedures by systematizing the appointment of special commissioners and providing them with written instructions. Durng his term an official court reporter was added to the staff of the court in order to provide more complete facilities for litigants.

Judge Johnson is 36 years old and a native of Cranf ills Gap in Bosque County. He is a graduate of Waco High School and Baylor University Schools of Business and Law. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. 0.

Heretofore, game wardens operated under tacit authority only to enforce the life belt rules except on five lakes in northeas Texas. Now they will be empowered to check on water craft as concerns proper licenses, and lights, and will note whether other provisions of the new law are observed. Lake patrols are expected to bulwark rescue work.

Primarily, these will concern actual handling of the boat as to speeding, overloading and proper concern for its 'occopants and for other persons; the no-riding provision affecting back of seats and outside of the boat seating area; the reuirement for a rear-view mirror by boats pulling skiiers, and the avoidance by skieers of areas zoned for fishing and bathing only, as in some lakes. There are several other major provisions.

The Department noted that most game wardens will devote only part time to lake patrols and as usual will concentrate on law enforcement, wildlife management and dissemination of information.

Sestte Hemtalove dekujeme za ptispevek na material na pritti deku, kterou budeme setivat. Loni jsme protily nekolik dek a snad i letos budeme pilne. MladiekY Stefanik vychodil tri tfidy mad'arskeho gymnasia v Pre gpurku ((Bratislava) slovenskeho ov8em nebylo. Pak rok studoval v Soproni a maturitu — s vyznarnenanim vykonal v 8arneM. Dostal stipendium 70 zlatYch, za slib Ze zUstane verny sire vlasti a evangelicke cirkvi. S tim odejel r. 1898 do Prahy, v r. 1901 pak na dal8i studie do Curychu a v r. 1904 uZ byl doktorem filosofie — a odcestoval do PatiZe, ktera. se mu na eas stala druhYm domovem.

Ale na ten malioky skromny domek v KoAariskach nikdy nezapomnel. Lnul k nemu, ke kraji, k rodine takovou 16.skou, ze neodolal stesku, sedi do rychliku, zajel dointil zlibat matce ruce, pozdravit otce a obratem se zase vraeel k dilu — do Francie.

Bylo to hvezdalstvi, k nemuZ pfedevSim prilnul. Mug tak vzletneho, neklidneho, basnickeho ducha leta se mokil vysokou matematikou (poetafstvim), aby mohi doso,hnouti sveho idealu.
