NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT We are again on the threshold of a New Year. 1965 is now history and 1966 brings with it new tasks, and every New Year brings us something new — new hope, new resolutions, and new plans. To achieve all that we have resolved to do this year let us not put off our tasks, rather let us start in the very first days of this New Year.

meetings, create greater interest in youth work, writing up a greater number of new members, and to promote more fraternal work. I believe that our efforts in this will be crowned with success.

Since our work is fraternal and today's trying times prompt fellowship, it therefore behooves us all, as sincere workers in this field and worthy citizens of our Nation, to help achieve a secure and lasting peace in the whole world.

We are proud of the progress we made in 1965. It is the fruit of our work which we performed in harmony and in the realm of brotherhood. Our progress was in attendance in lodges and district meetings, in youth work, in organizational work, in securing new members, and in fraternal work.

In attaining success in this year, we have with us the experiences of the past. What progress we may enjoy this year will depend upon us and how faithfully we perform our responsibilities. If we apply ourselves, as we did in the past year, we will attain

Newsbrieis We were pleased with the visit of two young men from the Austin area last Tuesday.Henry Peck, a graduate of the University of Texas, is attending the Austin School of Electronics and working at the State Hospital in Austin.

Henry is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 155, Austin. He is not Czech but has an excellent command of the language, and is very interested in the language and Czech culture. The other young man, Charles Wukasch, is also a graduate of the University Of Texas, and is Presently teaching German and English in the Schertz-Cibalo Independent School District. Charles recently spent :six months in Europe, mostly in the Leipzig, Germany area, where he studied and did research on the Wendish people. Both were on their way to Dallas to visit friends and relatives over the holidays. The: conversation was quite stimulating, and we enjoyed their visit very much.

• Anton Gahura, 78, passed away in his Fresno, Calif., home on Dec. 5th. Burial was in the Fresno Holy Cross Cemetery. Brother Gahura joined SPJST Lodge No. 103, Flatonia, on Dec. 6th, 1914.

• • Hallettsville's Recreation Hall, destroyed by fire earlier in the year, has been completed and will once again become the center of general community activities, including those of SPJST Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville. The hall is the property of the local American Legion chapter. The steel and brick structure is 80 x 120 feet and has approximately 2,400 feet of dining area and 3,000 square feet of dancing space.

The new hall is centrally air conditioned and heated. The new building will be dedicated in March 1966.

• Albina T. Sebesta, 78, passed away in a Sealy nursing home on Dec. 19th.

Sister Sebesta was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville.

Frank Chamrad, 88, passed away in Wharton on Dec. 15th. Brother Chamrad was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 138, Ganado.

Frank C. Pokladnik, 43, passed away in Dallas on Dec. 18th. Burial was in Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas. Brother Pokladnik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84 in Dallas.

Wednesday, January 5, 1966 Jerry Koliba, 64, passed away in Yoakum on Dec. 23rd. Brother Koliba was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 45, Shiner.

• • R. R. Foitik, 72, passed away in San Antonio on Dec. 9th. Brother Foitik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 103, Flatonia.

—SPJSTCHRISTMAS PROGRAM, CZECH CLUB, TEXAS A&M The Czech Club at Texas A&M University held its final meeting of 1965 on Dec. 17th, before the students left for the Christmas vacations. President Of the Club, Miro Pavelka of Ennis, welcomed the students and guests, among wham were John C. Pavlas and Ronald D. Zipp, new members of the Czech Club.

The group sar).g a number of ancinet Czech Christmas carols. Dr. J. M. Skrivanek, professor of Slavonic Languages at A&M, and club sponsor, had this to say about these old Czech favorites: "When we sing these wonderful Czech carols, we are in effect, going back 330 to 550 years into Czech history, and that of our forefathers.

They sang these very same carols hundreds of years ago. A whole world and an entirely new mode of life separate us from them, but we should still feel a closeness to them, as if we were about to clasp hands. Songs like "Narodil se Kristus Pan," and Syn Bozi se narn narodil" are two of the best known of these old Czech Christmas carols."

After the carols, the Czech national anthem, "Kde domov muj?," the meeting was adjourned.

It would be quite a nice piece of publicity and a deserved honor for a picture of the CZech Club to appear in the A&M yearbook, "Sword and Scabbard," (I believe that is the title). Martha Taylor, Chairman, —SPJSTLODGE • NO. 165, MOULTON Dear Readers and Writers, The Christmas rush is over! Some folks had sad experiences with accidents and deaths in their families, while others enjoyed the benefits of good health and a lot of joy. Here in Moulton, Mrs. Henry Wenske was buried Sunday afternoon and her husband passed away Sunday evening at 8 p.m.

His funeral was held this morning (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. Their deaths are mourned by one son, his wife, a grandson and a granddaughter, several brothers and sisters from both sides of the family.

Our December meeting was held, with only a few members present, since that same Sunday they had a Christmas tree and program at the VFW Hall.

All our old officers were re-elected, with one being undecided and waiting for a replacement. The door prize was won

by Julie Krejci. Our next meeting will be held again on the second •Sunday, at 2 p.m., and will continue to be held on the second Sunday until further notice. I sure would like to know why some members of our lodge are just not interested in the welfare of their lodge. Do come to our meetings and help us plan for the future. We older ones are passing from the scene rather quickly. I just heard on the radio that Julius Vrana, 6, ginner and businessman of Midway, passed away. He will be buried in Shiner. He is survived by his brothers, sisters, and his aged parents of Moravia; his wife, and several children. We never know when our time is up. Let's all enjoy brotherhood and unity at our lodge meetings.

This will be all for tonight. I must add that Santa Claus was generous at our house this year. All the children and grandchildren were at home. Only our son Erwin, who is in the AF stationed in California, was unable to be with us.

Our last meeting was held on Dec. 19.

W e were very pleased at the nice turn-

out of members who attended the meeting.

This being our annual election of officers the meeting started promptly at 3 p.m., with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Allan Wayne Henzen, followed by the usual business matters. When all this was taken care of, Bro. President Ben Jarma burned the gavel over to Vice President Bill Gaiser due to the procedure of electing officers. The officers were unanimously re-elected by the membership. May we say congratulations to: Bro. Ben Jarma, president; Bro. Bill Henzen, secretary; Sister Carolyn Ondrusek, treasurer; Sister Annie Steiner, financial secretary.

You have done well in the past, and may God bless you and guide you successfully through the coining year.

Other committees elected were: Entertainment Committee -- Bros.

Tom Paroski, Elmil Petr, Jerome Rejcek, Leo Rejcek, Randy Scott, Leonard Baleja, Weldon Hackworth; Sisters Wanda Kopecky, Cecile Kretsinger, Faye Rejcek, and Hattie Macha.

House Committee — Bros. Leo Kopecky, John Kubacak, Glen Kretsinger, Anton Janousek, Joe Kutil.

Sunshine Committee — Sister John Baleja and Sister Joe Kutil.

With the election complete, the meeting came to a close and all the members were treated to a free supper sponsored by the lodge and prepared by the sisters. A very delicious meal, consisting of ham, potato salad, baked beans and various other goodies was served. There was no doubt that everyone enjoyed this meal immensely.

After the meal everyone settled down to watch the little tots present a very beautiful Naitivity Scene and little dancing angels. It was very impressive to see such tiny little tots give such a splendid performance. All this is due to a splendid crew of youth leaders, Sisters Bessie Petr, Lillie Jarma, Carol Rejcek, and Ruth Chmelar. We know you worked very hard and the fruits of your labor were certainly rewarding.

With the program over there was still more excitement than ever, because who else should arrive in all their glory but Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.

The children were awed with excitement as they, one by one, sat on Santa's lap to tell him what they wanted for Christmas and received a pretty pink bag filled with all sorts of fruit, nuts and goodies.

With this, the evening came to a

Our sincere thanks go to all who worked so hard to make this day such a successful event and may we say a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus who were none other than our newest grandpa and grandma, Otto and Annie Janousek.

Wednesday, Dec. 29th, the Entertainment Committee, consisting of the old committee and the new, held their annual Christmas party and meeting.

This also included all the officers of the lodge and their families. Everyone brought a covered dish and it's always so wonderful to taste the various dishes that each one seems to specialize in.

Now our biggest problem will be to settle down and try to lose some of these bulges and pounds all the wonderful foods seem to have put on.

Again we say Happy New Year to all of you and to our members, come to the meeting again in January, the third Sunday, Jan. 16, at 4 p.m.

LODGE PRIMORI NO. 143, INEZ Dear Sisters and Brothers: On Sunday, Dec. 19, we had our regular meeting, which was our annual meeting. Thee lection of officers for the coming year was held and the results are as follows: President — Maynard Janecka Vice-President — W. J. LODGE NO. 35, ELK Lodge No. 35, SPJST, and RVOS held their annual Christmas party on Dec. 19th, 1965, at 5 p.m. The weather was bearable and we had a wonderful turnout. The only guest that Chairman Bob Kimball recognized when he called for guests to come forward to the stage were my parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Rauschuber. I hope I did not overlook anyone because visitors are always welcome.

The children then had the program.

Wednesday, January 5, 1966 who welcomed everyone and then went into the program.

As Linda introduced them they each said their part, which pertained to the Christ Child or to Santa Claus. In between the poems the Youth Club sang and also Cynthia, Denise and Charlotte Banik sank "0 Come, All Ye Faithful," and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas."

All the children were very good and they always steal the show.

Supper was then served, which consisted of turkey and all the trimmings.; We want to thank all the ladies who worked before and after supper in the kitchen. If it weren't for them, I am sure it would not have turned out so nice. These ladies baked the turkeys and dressing and I am sure this was an all-day job: Mrs. Mary Barleka, Mrs. Bob Kimball, Mrs. Vernon Wood, Mrs. Martha Mladenka, Mrs. Rudolph Vicha, Mrs. Albert Young, Mrs. John Mach, and Mrs. Eugene Pavelka. After everyone had supper and thoroughly enjoyed it, Santa Claus blew in, and did the children swarm around him! The poor guy didn't even get a chance to sit down. Santa gave each child a stocking and a large cane of candy.

The children were very content and the parents started to enjoy themselves by dancing to the music of Alvin Matus and his band. Brother Albin donated the music to Elk lodge and the members, which was very nice and was greatly appreciated. I will list the members of the band so that each of us can thank them for the four hours they played: Albin and sis son, Albin Jr., Royce Merritt, Joe Barton, and Bob Thistos, Jr. Some of the people we might want to thank are Brother Bob Kimball, Christmas Chanrman, Sister Barleka, Christmas Food Chairman; Brother Vernon Wood, Christmas ReIfreshment Chairman, and John D. ;Hudson and Willie Thun, RVOS Christmas Chairmen.

LODGE NO. 35, ELK Our last meeting was called to order by our president, Henry Breitkreutz.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by members • of the Youth Club.

New members are: Arnold and Myrtle Chudej. We at Lodge 35 welcome you, and all the visitors.

Brother Willie Adamik, building chairman, thanked everyone who in anyway helped make the hall a complete success for 1965. Mostly he

V ESTNiK thanked the men who showed up on the different work days. The last work day was Nov. 14, 1965, and it turned out to be a great success. Those present were Brothers Jim Pavelka, Rudolph Vicha, Bob Kimball, Vernon Wood, Vernon Dulock, Emil Vicha, Fred Mach, Willie Thun, John Mach, Willie Mladenka, Eugene Pavelka, Charlie Pavelka, and Fred Kubitza. Brother Emil Vicha was in charge of the ticket booth, and Brother Fred Mach was in charge of moving and centering the stage.

The Sick Committee reported that little Brother Garry Jackson was in the hospital. He is now at home doing nicely. Gary is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Armstrong.

We then held election of officers.

The RVOS and SPXST Lodge Elk No. 35 decided to have their Christmas parties together. The date was set for Dec. 19.

Although I was not elected reporter for 1966, I am sure I will still get my "two cents worth" into the Vestnik. I have enjoyed being your reporter and intend helping Albert as much as possible.

OUT next meeting will be held on Jan. 9, 1966 at 2:30 p.m.

LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members and Friends: Our Christmas party on Dec. 14th was a big success. We had a large attendance and all the children were happy. Santa Claus came by and distributed all the gifts. The food was just wonderful. That is always appreciated.

LODGE NO. 154, FORT WORTH Dear Members, On behalf of Lodge 154, May we take this opportunity to wish each and everyone of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

We held our monthly meeting on Sunday, Dec. 12th. The meeting was opened by our president, Jerry Milan.

Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag was led by John Becan, vice president, and after discussions of business matters, We held our election of officers.

The officers are as follows: President, Jerry Milan; Vice President, John Becan; Secretary, Mary Renfro; Financial „Secretary, Anna Milan; Treasurer, Mary Hale; Sergeant-at-Arms, Don. Steinman; Youth Leaders, Sister Mary Renfro, and Sister Hank Milan.

The Christmas party was enjoyed by everyone. We thank everyone who was in the play. It was very nice, and Santa Claus came with his gifts for the happy children. Thank you, Santa Claus!

DISTRICT III MAKES ITS, QUOTA Dear Brother and Sister Organizers: Another year has gone by, so let's take a little time to pause for a while in the rush and hurry to reflect upon the past year's accomplishments.

We in District III, have made our 1965 quota! We went over the top!

Our servers were: Miss Mary Louise Kadlecek, Miss Margaret Rezek, Mrs. John Mrs. Wanda Elzner, and Mrs. Dorothy Dixon. Mrs. Vala, and Mrs. Mary Elzner made sandwiches and hamburgers in the kitchen.

At the close of the program, Bonnie Cox and Ruby Benham, representing the youth club, presented Mrs. Wanda Elsner with a gift to show our appreciation for the wonderful job she is doing with the youth.

If I have omitted anyone I am sincerely sorry to have done so. We had so (many wonderful people helping us that it would have been easy for me to overlook giving credit where credit is due.

Our Gift Star project is still in progress. I would like to thank Mrs. Mary Hanka for her donation and also those who have already given Gift Stars in the past. I hope that you will continue to help us with this project.

These gift stars can be given to any of our youth, the youth leader, or her helpers.

We are looking forward to our teen dance this Jan. 7th. We have had tremendous response to the dances, and hope many more will come. In the past, our dances have been from 8 to 11:30 p.m., but due to the larger crowds, our dances, beginning in January, will be from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Admission will be 75c. These dances will be held on the first and third Fridays of each month.

As the old year slowly fades away, We find the new year sneaking up on us. Many of us made resolutions for the New Year, even if we do know that these resolutions will not stick with us.

I have also- made a resolution and I hope I can stick to mine. Resolved: that I hope that I can do as good a job as our past reporter, Bonnie Cox. She did a wonderful job! I only hope I can do as well.

On Christmas Eve we went to my grandpa's house in Midfield. All my uncles, aunts, and cousins were there.

The supper was very delicious. At my grandpa's house I got a sewing purse and money. I also got a Mosaic Tile Kit. On Christmas Day we went to my grandpa's house in Taiton. I got some material for a dress.

LODGE NO. 84, TEEN CLUB, DALLAS Dear Readers, This is a brief report of the activities of the Lodge 84 Teen Club.

The year was opened in January with the installation of officers for the year 1965. Later in January, the Teen Club went ice skating at Fair Park. Although the ice was cold, everyone had an enjoyable time.

In February the Teen Club went "Italian". We had a pizza party and ate at the Pizza Hut. Everyone enjoyed eating the delicious pizza, especially since the lights were dim. That way no one knew how much the other person ate, or could see the "pizza faces"!

March was quiet as far as activities went, but April followed with a dance. en May, with a hayride and wiener roast at the Mockingbird Stables.

In June, the teenagers were busy selling tickets and preparing for the Princess Ball. July was the month for the Princess Ball when our queen, Sharon Gaiser was crowned. After the ball, the teenagers left for a very early breakfast (1 a.m.) at the Remada Inn. The food was great) Shortly after the Princess Ball, the Teen Club spent a fun-filled weekend at Seabolt's Dude Ranch, In August there was no meeting because of the fatal accident which took

the life of our Teen Club President, Frankie Petr.

In September, Uncle Sam called two of our members, Richard Kopecky and Ronnie Hnnzen. The Teen Club gave them a going-away party and our prayers for a safe return home. The Teen Club also spent an enjoyable day at Six Flags in September.

Since Halloween is in October, the Teen Club had a dance using Halloween as the theme. We had a combo, the Four-Fifths, who played great music. There was good atendance at the dance, especially people from sister lodges.

November wan a quiet month, but December was full, with Christmas just around the corner. The Teen Club had a Christmas dance with the Four-Fifths supplying the music. All the lodges were invited and many of the members came. The dance was a great success.

The Teen Club members exchanged gifts among themselves, and also sent fruit to the SPJST rest home for the elderly members. We also elected our new officers for the year 1966.

They are: President — Johnny Pokladnik Vice President — Larry Gaiser Secretary — Olivia Rejcek Treasurer — Justine Pokladnik.

They will assume their offices in the January meeting.

The Teen Club of Lodge 84 wishes to thank its leader, Mrs. Petr, and her assistant, Mrs. Ondrusek, for keeping the club going. Without their help we wouldn't be able to do as many things as we have done this past year.

The Teen Club of Lodge 84 was the first SPJST teen club, and wishes to remain in circulation. But to do this, we need the membership and support of more of the teenagers of the lodge.

The club is becoming more and more active, as new members join. We would like very much to, include all the teenagers of Lodge 84 in our activities so we may get to know them and have a closer relationship in our lodge. Our meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month at 2 p.m.

We will gladly welcome new faces and members to the club.

The Teen Club of Lodge 84 is very proud to have Mr. James Janousek, the new state Youth Director, as a member of Lodge 84. Mr. Janousek is a former member of our Teen Club, and was a very active member. We are sure Mr. Janousek will fill the position of state Youth Director well. Mrs. Sebesta was a faithful member of the Nelsonville SPJST Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville Brethren Church, Christian Sisters, and the Mutual Aid Society.

--SPJST-RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY In behalf of the members of Lodge No. 89, Rosebud, Texas, we wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of Brother JOE KOSLOVSKY, who passed away at his home after a brief illness. He was 88 years old at the time of his death and a charter member of our lodge at Rosebud. Bro. Koslovsky was a very active member in his younger days, attended meetings regularly and was always ready to help in any way his services were needed.

He is survived by his wife, five sons, Joe and Erwin of Temple and Woodrow, Frank, and John of Rosebud; one daughter, Mrs. Louis Dokupil of Rosebud; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Sebek of Rogers, and Mrs. Veronica Baca of Temple, one of the few living chartermembers of the SPJST. Funeral rites were held at Green's Fluneral Chapel. Rev. P. J. Kostohryz of Temple officiated, with burial in Woodland Cemetery at Rosebud.

CAHURA IS DEAD AT 78 A Requiem Mass for Anton Gahura, 78, a Fresno area resident for about 45 years, was celebrated at St. John's Cathedral.

Mr. Gahura died at his Fresno, Calif. home cf an apparent heart attack. He was a retired employe of the California Products Co., a Fresno distillery.

A native of Czechoslovakia, Gahura ,farmed in Clovis when he moved to California from Texas in 1921. He had lived in Fresno since 1927.

He and his wife, Marie, had been married 58 years.

He was a member of st. Helen's par•sh, the American Sokol Organization, a Czechoslovak physical fitness and gymnastic group, the International Institute and the Slavonic Benelovent Order of Texas.

Besides his widow, he is survived by ANTON

VESTNXK a son, Anton of Fresno; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Falls of ClOvis, Calif., and Mrs. Ann Gibeson of San Leandro, Calif.; a brother, Frank of Fresno, and a sister, Mrs. Josephine Senkyrik of El Campo, Texas; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family requests that any remembrances be in the form of donations to the Fresno County chapter of the American Heart Association or to the building fund of St. Helen's Church.

The Rosary was recited in Sullivan, Burns and Blair Funeral Home Chapel.

Items of Interest HOME FINANCING FACTS FOR FAMILIES What's one of the largest single investment you'll probably ever make?

For many families, it's buying a house.

Consider carefully the many factors involved in home financing — and avoid the pitfalls, suggest Mrs. Laura J. Russell, Texas A&M University area Extension specialist in housing and home furnishing, and Jack Jenkins, area Extension farm managements specialist, located at Denton.

The two specialists emphasize that during the last decade, the average cost of new homes has increased about 50 percent. Higher prices account for Some of the increase, but higher incomes have led to larger houses, improved materials and more and better mechanical equipment.

Research shows that enclosed space costs range from about $9 to $20 or more per square foot. Costs vary according to location, size, type and quality of houses. Other cost factors are the kind and amount of mechanical equipment, as well as such items as garages, tileld bathrooms, paved terraces, heating and cooling systems and landscaping.

Builders' houses — or those constructed in lar ge numbers at one time — cost less than custom-designed, individually built houses. Land costs vary as much as that of the buildings.

Lot value is directly proportional to the desirability of the location and the size of the building site. Before buying a building site, it's a good idea to have an architect check the adaptability of the size for the plan, excavations, retaining walls and drainage — all of which add extra expense.

NEW USE FOR CASTORBEANS

The oil derived from castorbeans has a lot of uses other than for small boy ailments. Aand still another may be in the making.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture has contracted, with the ArcherDaniels-Midland Company, Minneapolis, to do research on converting laboratory results on castor oil-based urethane foams into commercial processes.

Agricultural Research Service scienttists have learned from basis studies that castor oil and its derivatives can be introduced into high performance urethane foams at low cost. Samples of rigid castor-based foams meet standards of strength, insulating ability, and resistance to fire equal to those of the best commercial foams.

Rigid urethane foams are widely used in home and commercial refrigerators and freezers and in refrigerated storage facilities. Estimates indicate that uses for insulation and strength in prefabricated walls, roofs, and floors of building and in the construction of refrigerated ships, rail cars and trucks may reach 150 million pounds within the next 5 years — about 3 times the current •use , for such purposes.

Castorbean production continues to gain favor as a substitute for crops now grown in surplus quantities. It is well adapted to the Southwestern States.

Chemically, castor oil has a major advantage in its unique fatty .acid composition, nine-tenths of the oil consists of ricinoleic acid. It does not compete with food oils.

Present industrial uses are in polyurethanes, lubricants, plasticizers, surface coatings, hydraulic fluids, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other specialty products. Increased use in foams would extend the market for castor seed oil.

10 FOODWISE, 1966 GETS OFF TO BOUNTIFUL START The year 1966, foodwise, will get off to a bountiful start.

Eleven ioods are designated especially plentiful for the month of January.

Pecans are featured. Others include grapes, grapefruit, apples, red tart cherries, oranges and orange products for mighty delicious fruit eating, reports the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture also reports plentiful stocks of such vegetables as onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage and split peas.

The 1965 pecan estimate has been moved up to 263.8 million pounds, better than 90 million pounds more than 1964. Farm sales of native pecans in mid December were running about 4 to 6c a pound less than for the same period during 1964, so add special flavor to your favorite dishes with pecans.

California's record grape crop totaling around 3.9 million tons will be sending large quantities into local markets this January. Emperors are expected to be in best supply.

Production of potatoes is up 25 percent over the 1964 fall crop — creating the largest on record. And USDA's Consumer and Marketing Service reports heavy shipments of sweet potatoes arriving at local markets.

For some of the best in eating this January — and at reasonable cost — enjoy and use plentiful foods.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE Federal Bureau of Investigation The year 1966, when historically recorded, may prove to be one of the most significant in the annals of law enforcement. Whether the references will reflect a service in keeping with the highest traditions of our profession depends primarily on the efforts of each enforcement officer.

Events of the past year give some indication of the momimental tasks facing us in the months ahead. While 1965 was a year of growth and progress, events further pointed up the need for law enforcement to measure up in the fullest extent to the professional concepts of its duties.

As a guardian of justice and order, the police officer cannot dictate the terms or circumstances under which he must meet his obligations. Although law enforcement is not responsible for the social or political conditions which ferment unrest, civil disobedience, and

IIESTNIK violence, the officer is not free to rationalize or to hedge in the execution of his duty. There are those who charge "police brutality" to detract from their misdeeds, to gain publicity and sympathy for their cause, and to discredit all peace officers. Even so, the policeman is sworn to remain courageously calm and to exercise self-restraint in the face of scorn and ridicule. He cannot afford to be goaded into actions which lend credence to such allegations.

Public trust is built on the respect and confidence inspired by outstanding service. In discharging its responsibilities, law enforcement can follow the objectives and ideals of professional police service to avoid a breach of this trust.

In 1966, we must chart a course of action based on integrity, ability, and perseverance. Each officer of the law should resolve to be a living symbol Of trustworthiness and dependability. He must honor his pledge to serve mankind, to protect lives and property, to shield the weak against oppression and the peaceful against violence and disorder, and to respect the rights of all persons to liberty, equality, and justice.

In short, the answer to many of the grave challenges facing law enforcement in the New Year lies in a strict adherence to professional and ethical standards.

John Edgar Hoover, Director A&M SCIENTISTS STUDY EFFECTS OF HYDROGEN FLUORIDE ON PLANTS Hydrogen fluoride, a by-product of steel, aluminum, and fertilizer plants, may affect the hereditary potential of plants studies by Texas A&M University scientists indicate.

Hydrogen fluoride, or HF, is a very poisonous and reactive gas which can cause the disease fluorisis in humans.

Although no controls are presently placed on the release of HF, the gas may affect crops planted and animals grazed in the immediate vicinity of an industry which produces HF as a by•product.

Dr. Aly Mohamed, a post-doctoral fellow in the genetics section of the Department of Plant Sciences at A&M, is the principal investigator in the project. Tomato plants are used in his tests because they are easy to work with, and the different genetic characters are well-known.

Wednesday, January 5, 1966 fluoride affects the chromosomes of plants and, probably, the genes themselves. Genes are sub-microscopic units of inheritance found on the chromosomes of all living organisms.

Dr. Mohamed, Dr. Howard Applegate, and Dr. James Smith, also of the Plant Sciences Department, have made microscopic observations which indicate that hydrogen fluoride breaks the chromosomes and may alter the genes.

"I feel HF use probably an agent in inducing heritable changes," speculates Dr. Mohamed.

Twenty tomato plants were treated with minute doses of HF for periods of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 days in a fumigation chamber. The doses were kept low enough that no visible effects were observed on the plants. Flower buds and young leaves were collected after each treatment for microscopic analysis. The plants were then moved to a green house where they were grown and studied. The seeds from the apparently normal plants were saved and planted and the offspring observed.

Several strange variations were found in the progeny, apparently because of chromosome breakage or genis mutations. Upon germination, some plants developed three or four cotyledons instead of tre usual two. Others stopped growing after developing the first true leaves. Some developed a side stem and continued growing normally from the side stem. Several plants developed simple instead of compound leaves. Many of the plants produced leaves which look like they were wilted. A few plants look like fern plants. They are small with long, thin leaves and, occasionally, just a mid-rib, without a blade.

Hydrogen fluoride probably caused these variations and may well be harmful to plants exposed to it, says Dr. Mohamed. He plans to continue his research into the effects of the gas.

The penalty for violating this provision is na less that $25 nor more than $200.

LONGHORN CAVERN IS UPGRADED The Texas Parks and Wildlilfe Commission announced plans for a concession-financed renovation and construe tion program for converting famed Longhorn Caveim near Burnet from "just a scenic hole in the ground" to a facility worthy of its rating as the nation's third largest underground attraction.

The Commission awarded a projected 20-year contract to a group of Austin and Burnet, Texas, businessmen. The group would be committed, without cost or liability to the state, to immediately erect an all-purpose $75,000 headquarters building, including a modern restaurant.

The original installations plus recurring property additions and refinements would revert to state ownership after twenty years and anytime during the interim should the operators default in any manner.

The proposal was signed by two Burnet men, James L. Luther and W. Glen Anthony and two Austin men, Ed J. St. John and Vic Mathias. The agreements stipulates that appropriate advertising, publicity and promotion of the area will be provided.

The elaborate project would mark the first substantial work on the giant subterranean area since the original

vEsTNfic improvements more than thirty years ago.

Plans call for a modern new surface installation and general overhaul of sub-surface fixtures to embellish the natural wonders. The Commission said construction work is expected to be timed so that the cavern site, ten miles from Burnet just off Highway 281, will be readied for the 1966 tourist season.

The Commission noted that the historic area is on Park Road 4 leading to Inks Lake State Park, six miles away on a scenic drive connecting with Buchanan Dam and other Highland Lakes showplaces.

Peak cavern attendance was 64,155 reached two years ago. Last year's total was 53,615.

The Commission observed that the cavern, linked with historic incidents dating back to pre-stone age times and used as a hiding place by both the Confederate Army and notorious outlaws, "is a much neglected asset of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and deserves a better rating than a mere hole in the ground." It addea.

"When the extensive new construction and renovation has been completed, the cavern will provide one of the state's most fascinating and beneficial recreational facilities."

Tales of unexplored depths and hidden treasure embellish the mystic tours along lighted walkways, past intriguing areas called the Queen's Throne, Cathedral Room, Chandelier Room, Jacob's Wall and Frozen Waterfall.

The cavern, rated only behind Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, was formed an estimated 500 million years ago by a mighty earth movement that permanently sealed the hard granite formation. It has a constant year around temperature of 64 degrees.

General stability has enhanced the natural ruggedness and particularly the delicate effects from stalactites, stalagmites, calcite crystals and massive flowstone deposits. Potholes. solution domes, channels and pits constitute the more common errosional features.

Remains of prehistoric creatures have been found far underground but comparatively few types of plants and animals have been obserbed, beyond bats, cave crickets and algae. Flint and primitive tools definitely linked the stone-age man with this area.

DUCK BAGS HELPED BY DOGS

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel at the J. D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area near Port Arthur report duck hunters with dogs y e an amazing edge over those without.

Biologist C . D. Stutzenbaker said gunners using dogs in the free waterfowl hunts on the experimental area, find nine out of ten downed ducks, while those without retrievers lose two out of three crippled ducks.

The biologists described the hunts as "just about the best we have ever had" on the demonstration marsh. He said only four out of the first 106 hunters 'failed to get their limit. "But the firing was adequate," he added, noting that "more than 150 shots were fired by the futile four."

The area staff takes careful note of such observation and checks out each duck as to species, age and such, all vital to management routine.

Stutzenbaker said superior area water conditions permitted by a system of dikes, contrasts with surrounding Jefferson County where drouth has affected the marshes and discouraged said, Jefferson County has almost the highest duck population and likewise a large number of hunters.

HUNT TOLL TOTALS 17 FOR STATE Gun fatalities during the hunting 'season, dating back to the early fall dove season, rose to 17 in the state on the basis of five additional deaths reported to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department during the last two weeks.

Significantly, none of the victims was mistaken for Wild game.

Three of the five latest casualties involved deer hunters, raising the big game shooting toll to five, as noted by department field men and other • sources.

Three of the last five fatalities involved self-inflicted wounds and two of these were caused by guns either being dropped from or being pulled toward a tree blind.

In the other additional self-caused death, a man drew a shotgun toward himself, muzzle first. It was the second such fatality of the fall.

One of the victims stepped into the line of fire of a fellow deer hunter at close range. It also was the second such accident of the hunting season. Previously a dove hunter arose from a kneeling position just as a youthful companion fired at a dove.

is tree-elevated hunter struck apparently by a stray bullet and a man fatally wounded by his own gun when it was kicked and discharged by a wounded deer.

Two of the more recent deer hunting deaths were particularly tragic since they involved close kin. One young man ,killed his father when his gun accidentally fired, and another adult killed his father-in-law when the latter stepped into line of rifle fire, close up.

—SPJ STilEER CALLS ARE ILLEGAL In the stretch drive for that trophy rack and the venison chops, hunters are being beguiled by the many experts sharing in the economy harvest.

As noted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the volunteer helpers may be disturbed by some ,poor shooting on their rented leases.

Like the one Hill Country want ad in a big city paper which began by stating in capital letters: "IF YOU CAN HIT YOU CAN KILL," etc.

Meanwhile a firm is marketing a "NEW BUCK CALLING METHOD" etc., etc.

The last of which prompted a Department reminder that this device cannot legally be any mechanical contraption, which are outlawed. There was the added admonishment that the product best be restricted to old-fashToned horn rattling.

Here's the state law under the subhead USING DEER CALL' "Any person who at anytime of the year in hunting deer oses a deer call, whistle, decoy , call pipe, or other device, mechanical or natural for the purpose of calling or attracting any deer, except by rattling deer horns, shall be fined," etc., etc.

ECONOMIST SEES GOOD HOG PRICES AHEAD Supply and demand still work in the market place. John G. McHaney, Extension economist at Texas A&M University, says the present situation with hogs is a good example.

The very favorable hog prices are a result, he says, of smaller supplies, a continuing strong demand by consumers and higher prices for other red meats.

And what's ahead? McHaney says the June to November 1965 pig crop which will provide most of the hog Slaughter supplies for the first half of 1966 is probably down 7 to 8 per cent from a year earlier, andthatsupplies may be further curtailed by the withholding by producers of sows and gilts

for breeding during the early part of 1966.

The price outlook for the first half of 1966 calls for prices to average above those for the same period in 1965.

Poultry supplies are expected to be up considerably during this same period and may put some downward pressure On hog prices, he says. The economist adds that supplies of red meats other than pork are not expected to be much different from last year.

But there are indications, he says, that hog producers may be halting the downswing in production. Producers on Sept. 1, 1965 reported they intend to farrow the same number of sows during the December 1965 - February 1966 period as a year earlier. In recent months, sow slaughter has dropped 25 per cent.

Hog prices in the last half of 1966 will depend upon how quickly the apparent expansion develops and how large it will be. If the increase is only Moderate in the late spring of 1966 over 1965 farrowings, then late 1966 production would be light, he says.

Prices would likely decline to slightly below levels of the fall of 1965.

Based on past production cycles, there is real danger of over-expansion and lower prices in 1967. If producers increase .farrawings late in the spring and in the fall of 1966 by 10 per cent or more, hog prices likely will dip sharply by late 1966 and in 1967, concludes McHanev.

FAMILY INCOME AND EXPENDITURES Studies of family expenditure and income trends show new developments, says Mrs. Wanda Meyer, Extension home management specialist at Texas A. & M. University.

Figures reported by the Institute of Life Insurance on trends in consumer income over recent years indicate that for the first time, about half of all families now have an extra income in addition to what they earn on the job from self-employment.

The growth trend has been persistent among farm as well as nonfarm families. A second income from a variety of public and private "nonwork" sources helps supplement family incomes. Most of the sources of a second income are from savings and investments. Second incomes are found in lower income as family income grows, each additional dollar is spent differently.

Extensive surveys of family and individual consumer spending habits in 66 metropolitan areas conducted by the

As income rises, the proportion spent on food and shelter decreases, The proportion spent on clothing increases as income rises. Cost of opcrating the household, including furnishings and utilities, averages 16.2 per cent of the budget for those with incomes of under $2,000. Intermediate income groups spend less on the household, while the increased use of domestic help raises the figure for high income groups to 17.1pe r cent.

Expenditures for transportation increase from 7.2 per cent of the budget in the low income group to 16.4 per cent in the $10,000 to $15,000 group and drop off to 14.2 per cent for the $15,000 and over category.

True, most communities now have emergency call systems which help find you a doctor when a crisis arises.

But that emergency might have been averted if the patient had been under the watchful eye of a personal physician, says a new pamphlet from the American Medical Association.

How do you select a doctor for your family?

Start by calling your local medical society for the names of several phy,sisians in your vicinity. Membership in his local medical society indicates that the doctor is a qualified physician meeting the high standards of those who know him best — his fellow practitioners.

If there is no medical society office in your community, ask your hospital or your local druggist for suggestions.

With these names you can investigate further, and make your own decision.

The American Medical Directory, pub lished by the American Medical Association, is an excellent source of background information that is available in most libraries.

In making your final selection, it is best to visit the doctor in his office.

Does he impress you, favorably? No one personality type can be recommended, of course, but if you are "comfortable" with him and sense a quality of competence, he has already begun to win the confidence necessary for a good doctor-patient relationship.

—SPJST--HOSPITALIZED CHILD MOTHER IN ROOM HELPS London, 'England — For the past two years a hospital in Scotland has permitted mothers to stay with their ill child round-the-clock for the duration of their youngster's hospital stay. How has this unusual arrangement worked out? Splendidly, according to parents, children and physicians.

"It meant absolute peace of mind for my wife and myself," commented one satisfied father. "It was of great value to my child, as she talks of what she did in the hospital, and seems to have forgotten everything she suffered," reports another parent.

The physicians found that children adjusted to hospital routines more readily and that "treatment of the patients was no more difficult and was in some cases easier." The system reportedly reduces the sometime severe and prolonged psychological danger young children suffer because they cannot understand the reason for the ,separation from their mothers.

Children with seriolus illnesses, such as meningitis and respiratory infections, and even those undergoing major surgery, were treated with their mothers at their side. The only time a mother was not permitted to remain with her child was when she herself was ill or when she was in the early stages of pregnancy.

—SrJSTPREVENTING BIRTH BLUES An ounce of prevention can avert postpartum depression, a not uncommon condition following childbirth.

This is what Dr. Lloyd Elam told fellow-physicians attending a recent meeting of the National Medical Association in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Elam, who heads the Depart-

VESTNfIC ment of Psychiatry at Meharry Med'dal College in Nashville, Tenn., believes that if a woman is encouraged by her physician to air her fears and problems during pregnancy, she may get just the support she needs to handle them effectively, and may thus avoid "birth blues."

According to Dr. Elam, "Any pregnant woman who suffers a loss, fears an increase or responsibility, or has a diminishing ability to take care of things is a likely candidate for postpartum depression." Sensitive understanding is the "miracle drug" such a woman needs during her pregnancy, and afterwards, as well, says the psychiatrist.

Dr. Elam pointed out that postpartum depression usually sets in about the fourth day after the baby is born, but that its forerunner, apathy, often begins on the second day. If such a sign appears, it should be treated promptly.

TEXAS POPULATION TO REACH 30 MILLION IN 55 YEARS More than. 30 million persons are expected to be living in Texas by the year 2020. Two-thirds of them will be living in the more urganized counties by that time — 15 founties in all. Seven of the 15 counties will have a population of more than 1,000,000 persons each, the other eight from 400,000 to 1,000,000 persons each.

These are the findings released recently by the Texas Water Development Board in conjunction with the University of Texas Bureau of Business Research. The population study is directly related to the forthcoming State Water Plan, due to be presented to the public in late spring of 1966, and will be the basis for water-requirement projections to the year 2020.

The upward trend already is in efk'ect, the study reveals. In 1960 the Census showed a total state population Of 9,579,677. For 1980 the projection is 14,926,968; for the year 2000 it is 21,223,594; for the year 2020 it is 30,546,378.

Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis, Nueces, and El Paso Counties are in the top seven "over 1 million" category for the year 2020 and in that order.

Harris County, with 13 per cent of the state's population in 1960, will rise to 15 per cent in 1980, 16 per cent in 2000, and 17 per cent or 5,071,661 persons in 2020.

Population of Dallas County, second with 10 per cent of the state total in

13 1960, will increase to 13 per cent in 1980, and then to 12 per cent in the years 2000 and 2020.

The eight counties in the "400,000 to 1,000,000" category for the year 2020 are: Jefferson, McLennan, Galveston, Brazaria, Smith Lubbock, Hidalgo, and Gregg — in descending order.

INCOME $10 BILLION A WEEK WITH RECORD SHARE GOING TO WORKING POPULATION The. American economy has established a new landmark in its persistent progress over the past quarter of a century with the attainment of a national income of $10 billion a week.

Along with its great growth in size, there has been a merked shift in the character and composition of the national income, reflecting the changing forces that have been at work in recent year in an economy that has become increasingly payroll-and-serviceoriented. National income is the total amount of money earned by capital and labor in the process of production.

The more commonly used gross national product, which is larger than national income, is the market value of all goods and services produced, and thus represents the expenditure side of the economy.

Data compiled by the U. S. Department of Commerce in its recent revisions of the figures for the national accounts put the total national income at just over $514 billion for 1964. There has been a further substantial rise since. Last year's total was a fourth higher than the annual rate in the first quarter of 1961, the start of the present period of record prosperity. It is practically six and one half times the size of the national income in 1940 when the rise in our economic activity began.

Two significant developments stand .out in an analysis of these figures.

'The first of these is the rising proportion of the national income that has been going to the working population, as paychecks and increasingly as supplements contributed by employers, both government and private, to protect workers and their dependents against the economic impact of death, retirement and unemployment.

The second major development in the shifting composition of national income mirrors the growing importance of services in the nation's economic activity and in the people's living standards in recent years, with a corresponding decline in the share of goods NATIONAL

14 production. Department of Commerce figures on national income by industrial origin show that manufacturing's proportion slipped to 30 per cent of the total in the last few years from 33 per cent a decade ago. The share of agriculture at little more than 3 per cent last year was at a record low.

The majority of the service classifications, by contrast, have increased their share of the national income "pie" over the past decade. The figures show particularly large gains for health and educational services and for state and local •government.

As a consequence of these trends, three American workers now earn their livelihood in the service industries for every two persons employed at producing goods. Up to a decade and a half ago goods production was the major source of jobs in the economy. Indicative of the extent of the turnabout, the lates figures show over 11 million More persons with a job in the services than in producing goods. Along with government, growth leaders in this dramatic reversal were the finance, insurance and real estate group and the service and miscellaneous classification.

RISING DEPENDENCY TREND POINTS UP NEED FOR PROTECTION The dependency burden in the economy in terms of the age composition of the population has reached the highest level ever recorded in the statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, and will go even higher do the years ahead.

This is shown in the relationship between the number of persons under 18 combined with those 65 and over to the age group between 18 and 64, the predominant economically productive years. The Census Burau defines this as the dependency ratio, and its persistent upturn over the post-way period is a measure of the growing demands on the production of the economy and of the rising responsibilities of the working population.

The latest figures show that there were 85 persons under 18 plus those 65 and over in the middle of last year for every 100 between 18 and 64. This was a new high. In 1940 the ratio was 60 per 100, reflecting a long-continued %decline in the birth rate. The reversal came with the marriage boom after World War II. The ratio is expected to remain near this mark for a few years and then continue its upward march. This will be due to continued increase in the

older population and the reaching of adulthood by teenagers who marry and form their own families. The Census projections show that there will be 88 persons under 18 and over 65 per 100 in the 19-64 group in 1980. The ratio is expected to reach 90 in the year 1985.

—SPJSTTHE FAMILY LAWYER "Alibi" "Alibi" simply means "elsewhere." In popular usage, it also has come to mean an excuse of any kind. But not in the courtroom. There, an alibi is only one specific kind of an excuse: that the defendant was elsewhere when the crime was committed.

'I taus: "I didn't know the gun was loaded," is not an alibi.

"I couldn't stop the car in time" is not an alibi.

But "I wasn't there" is an alibi.

Of course, absence alone is not a defense in every kind of crime. A man might mastermind a bank holdup, yet leave the deed itself to his henchmen.

Or a man might commit arson with a delayed-action fuse, allowing himself to be sunning himself at the beach when the fire starts.

Clearly, absence from the scene of the crime, in such circumstances, is not a good defense.

Nor is an alibi effective if it leaves open a reasonable possibility that the defendant — by hurrying — might still have committed the crime.

For instance, a man who proved that he picked up his girl friend at 9 p.m. was held not to have established an alibi for a murder committed at 8:45 p.m. The court noted that the girl lived less than 15 minutes' driving time from the scene of the murder.

But if the crime did require the defendant's actual presence at the scene, and if he can prove he wasn't there, then his alibi is airtight.

Unfortunately, when it comes to proof, an alibi is the kind of defense that may be easily faked. Many a rascal •has come to court with a made-toorder alibi, based on the convenient "recollection" of obliging friends.

Nevertheless, while the law takes account of the danger of fraud, it also gives full weight to an alibi that is fairly established.

"Alibi is not only a proper defense," commented one court, "but to an innocent man is always an essential defense, and indeed it may be his only defense."

AL LOOK AT LAUNDRY EQUIPMENT FOR 1968 Laundry equipment for 1966 will have outstanding features in more of the lines than ever before, says Mrs. Elsie P. Short, Texas A&M University Extension home management specialist.

Multiple wash cycles — from regular Wash to delicate fabrics and from soak to super soak — are to• by found in all models except those on the lowest-end of the sales line. The same is true of wash-and-wear cycles and low agitation speeds, according to Mrs. Short.

The capacity race seems to have subsided somewhat, says the specialist.

Most new models are listed as having a dry load capacity of 12 to 14 pounds.

Some makers back up their higher capacity claims by specifying that the 14-pound load must be made up of small articles. The washer load should be determined by the bulk and the type of fabrics. Delicate fabrics should not be washed in large loads of heavy fabrics.

Most popular colors for the season appear to be copper, turquoise and yellow. The decorator colors are available well down into each line, with furniture styling in walnut and woodtones appearing in some of the top-of-the-line models.

The step-up features for top-of-theline models include automatic bleach dispensers and fabric-softeners. Automatic programmed controls provide wide selection of wash temperatures and timed cycles at the push of a button, which is so Important to some fabrics.

Some top models have stainless steel inner tubs and filtering systems that clean and reclean the water during the wash and rinse cycles.

Someone, not a true sportsman, left behind a trail of dead and crippled livestock, mutilated signs, ruined fences, angry ranchers, and other acts that resulted in more locked gates.

Annually, the Texas Highway Department foots the whopping bill of over $450,000 for damage to road signs, and a good portion of such vandalism is by gunfire. Here again the individual is touched, right in the pocketbook and the tax dollar. You and I must pay the bill and suffer the consequences.

Where, then, is the dignity of spirit of persons who commit such acts?

Sportsmanship pales no less just because such acts are flagrant violations of county and state laws, and — in the case of mail boxes riddled with holes — violations of federal law. The farmer who drives along his fence line and finds a posted sign blasted with a shotgun doesn't concern himself over law and legal acpects so much as the bitter thought that a man with a gun has destroyed more of his property.

The next man to come along with a gun in his hand may be you: you, who respect the rancher and his property; you, secure in knowing that you have never wantonly destroyed anyone's land or fence or livestock; you, seeking merely to enjoy the outdoors in a safe, sane, orderly manner. The shock is a rude one when the rancher looks at you with cold eyes and says "NO." The growing threat to hunter access to private lands will continue until all private property, in all of Texas' 254 counties, all lands where game is raised behind a fence, will bear "No Trespassing" signs, unless vandalism is curbed — not tomorrow, but right now!

The Texas Power and Light Company uses many insulators and transformers in the $1,000 price class. Each year finds a large number of these items ruined by the shattering effects of high-powered rifles. In September, 1964, a plant manager of the Texas Telephone and Telegraph Company in one area inspected twelve bullet holes in equipment. These shots put 44 telephones out of order for a grand total of 255 hours, one microwave tower used for long distance toll calls was out for 28 hours. and one long distance toll cable was out for several hours. VESTNIK der a posted sign. thereby closing forever much hunting area to the honest sportsman. One cut fence, a felony in Texas, will do the same thing. One mutilated sign, many of them expensive livestock posters, will remove that land from the reaches of the many who know and respect the rights of their neighbors.

The number of hunters in Texas is increasing, while the area supporting wildlife is decreasing. Also, wildlife management practices, in some instdnces, are concentrating our hunters on small numbers of acres. More and more breakdowns in the creed of sportsmanship occur as a result of the dwindling resource-use acres. But, before it's too late, we'd better learn to preach the gospel of fair play for all, protection of the rights of the man who raises the game.

Vandalism on public and private property goes hand in glove with the trespass problem. When private lands are entered without permission, when someone shoots into the "home covey" of birds, the inevitable posted signs blossom like lights in the city. Respect for the rancher, and good sportsmanship, is no longer just a desirable thing, but an essential one if our hunting in this state on private lands is to be continued in the future.

Nothing would improve our respect for the landowner and th game laws as fast as having a law enforcement officer following every hunter. This we cannot do, nor would it be very pleasant. Therefore, to give only passing thought to sportsmanship, and then ignore it, is folly.

Training youngsters while they are still youngsters will insure our crop of true sportsmen for the future. And, say what you will, poor sportsmanship is always displayed by the person no one cared enough about to properly train.

This is a people problem. When sportsmen and others have respect for the landowner, he will naturally have respect for them.

The problem, now is outlined, but what about the cure?

We as individuals, must use good judgment with• firearms, and with the rights of others. We must learn to respect our laws for our own protection, and the welfare of others. We must watch for and report all cases of vandalism or damage to property just as if someone were presenting us with a bill. By L. A. Wilke How can you figure the cost of venison on the table? Actually you can't put a dollar and cent price tag on venison. The whole scheme is too complicated even for the IBM computer which figured out ahead of time the results of the last presidential election.

But count the time spent in happy anticipation the apprehension of linding a good buck, the stories that are told and the companionship of other live beings in the woods and you come up with an unknown value worth it all.

In every participating sport these values rise to the top, over and above the actual cost in money.

Coming up with figures on a meal of venison, the price is variable, depending on many things. I've tried to talk this over, merely for a point of in(formation, but most deer hunters say they don't want even to think of what their venison costs. I find it hard to think about myself.

Since deer hunting now has been placed, and rightfully so on a profit basis by most landowners, we can start with an average figure, of say $50 per buck. Lease prices range from $25 per gun (hunter) up, in some instances to $200. This will depend upon the deer, the location and the availability. The more deer on the place, usually the higher the price because of the certainty of the bunter filling his permit.

Some landowners get a flat price for a buck (or doe) with a "no-kill-nopay" provision. This usually includes guide service, etc., field dressing and sometimes meals.

The method of hunting also has changed. There was a time when most hunters went onto a deer lease and camped for several days. This isn't the common practice today, except on those places where the entire pasture has been leased by or for a party. In

16 this instance, provender is an item, say $25 per man (exclusive of beverage).

Others who live close enough to deer hunting areas, as most of us do now with the increased deer population, perhaps spend one or two nights in nearby motels, with meals. It figures out about the same.

So based on one buck, the lease and keep cost already has reached a minimum of $75 up to, perhaps, $100, but for this purpose just figure $75. This doesn't include the price of the gun, • ammunition, clothes or transportation. Here would be an almost impossible figure. What is the writeoff on a gun that costs $100 or better?

You take the deer to the ice house, where there is another $2 or $3 for storage. Or you can take it directly to the many processing plants scattered around during deer season. The minimum price for skinning, butchering and putting into the freezer is $7.50.

This is for a deer that probably will dress out at an average of 75 pounds, which probably is a high figure. Most of them probably won't dress out at more than 60 pounds. You decide you want 20 pounds of sausage. This takes another $5 worth of pork to mix with the ground venison. I've found, based on the last three or four years, my processed deer, with sausage, have cost me $15.

That much venison usually won't fit into the freezing compartment of the ifamily refrigerator. Also, you have promised some venison to friends, so you wind (up with perhaps 30 or 40 pounds of venison for your own use.

If the actual out-of-pocket money for the one buck, including lease, provisions, and processing, runs $90 and you have a 75-pound dressed animal, the meat has cost you $1.20 per pound.

Of course, there are other angles.

You may have killed a $10 doe, or you might have been real lucky and got invited to a friend's place. This doesn't happen too often any more.

Then, if you want, you can carry the figure much farther. Suppose you took Junior along and he killed a big buck, or friend wife proved to be the best hunter and got a monster, That calls for mounting the head, another $25 to $50. Remember, that all counts in the total price.

Is $2 per pound for edible venison too wild an estimate? I don't know. am sure, however, though a half-century of hunting, my venison has cost me pretty close to that figure. But

—Texas Game and Fish Magazine -SPJSTYoung Buyers, Large Policies Is 1964 Trend Younger buyers and larger policies were still the trend in the life insurance business last year, according to the Institute of Life Insurance.

An analysis of ordinary policies bought in the United States during 1964 shows that: —About $47 out of every $100 of insurance protection was issued to people under 30 years old, compared with $44 in 1963. The change was due almost entirely to increased purchases by people in their 20s.

Policy Size —While the average size policy bought by most age groups rose last year, the biggest increase was among people between 25 and 29 years old.

Their new policies averaged $12,450 of life insurance, or $1,240 more than in 1963.

—Among all buyers, the average size new policy rose to $8,770 last year, from $8,490 in 1963. Among adult men, the average was $12,560 last year, compared with $12,270 in 1963.

—The proportion of insurance bought by clerical and sales personnel, and by housewives, rose slightly, The proportion bought by professonals and semiprofessionals, executives, managers and proprietors dipped slightly.

Income of Buyers —The relationship of life insurance buying to the income of policyholders showed no significant change. Both in 1963 and 1964, about 55 per cent of the new insurance on adults was bought by people with incomes of less than $7,500.

They bought about 76 out of every 100 new policies.

—Both years, out of every $100 of new insurance, about $82 was bought by married people, about $15 by single people, and about $3 by people who were widowed, divorced or separated.

By far the largest proportion of ordinary policies bought in 1964-91 per cent—were permanent insurance, in whole or in part. This is the type that accumulates cash values. Of these, 70 per cent consisted of straight life, limited payment, modified life, endowment and retirement income policies.

Another 21 per cent were combination policies with a care of cash value insurance along with term insurance..

Only 9 per cent of the new policies consisted of term insurance only.

Wednesday, January 5, 1966 In all, families bought nearly $74 billion of ordinary life insurance last year, a record amount that exceeded the previous year's purchases by nearly $10 billion. Annual purchases of ordinary life insurance have increased each year for the past decade and a half.

INSURANCE CAN SERVE AS RETIREMENT INCOME Families need to consider insurance as a source of retirement income to says Mrs. Doris Myers, area Extension home management specialist at Texas A&M University.

This need was shown in a recent study made by Mrs. Myers working with aged farm couples in Central and East Texas.

Only about 40 per cent of all the families in the study had straight life insurance, and about 80 percent had either straight life or burial insurance. seventy per cent of the retired farm couples in the social security group and all the farm families with old age assistance benefits in the study had incomes of under $3,000 annually — which has been defined as the "poverty" level.

Mrs. Myers explained that the average cash value of straight life insurance per retired farm couples in the study was just under $1,900. Some of the families had borrowed against their insurance and reduced the cash value of the policies.

Of the husband-wife families drawing social security, 52 per cent had straight life insurance. Nineteen percent of these had life insurance on both the family head and the spouse, and 28 per cent had life insurance on the family head only„ and five per cent of the couples had life insurance on the spouse only.

In contrast, less than 10 per cent of the couples drawing old age assistance had straight life insurance. Texas couples who draw old age assistance can have life insurance with a cash value of not more than $1,000 on each person and• still be eleigible for the benefits, Mrs. Meyers explained.

In the old age assistance group, 83 per cent of the couples had burial insurance and 70 per cent had both family head and spouse covered. Some of these families had several burial in-. surance policies, niaking this a very expensive way to have life insurance.

Ownership of burial insurance does not affect eligibility for old age insurance, since it has no cash value, the specialht added.

Although Ysleta, El Paso County, claims to be Texas' oldest town, Old Tascosa, in Oldham County, actually is the oldest settlement still inhabited.

Ysleta was settled in 7682. However, Floyd V. Studer, an Amarillo archaeologist, has discovered ruins of an Indian pueblo built on the present site of Old Tascosa about 900 A.D. Traveling Texas In Keene, a Johnson County community 7 miles north of' Cleburne, the grocery stores sell neither meat nor cigarettes and the U. S. post office closes on Saturday but is open all day Sunday! Keene is a town of Seventh Day Adventists, a sect which doesn't eat meat, use lipstick, smoke, drink or dance. It observes Saturday as the Sabbath and regards SUnday as the first working day of the week. It supports a thriving Adventist Junior College.

Frontier Prankster Ben Thompson, famed city marshal of Austin in the 1880's, held up more trains than Jesse James ever did — but for a different purpose.

Ben's greatest pleasure was in stopping his buggy across the tracks in front , f tie evpre-s trail. a the Austin depot, covering the engineer with his gun and forcing him to hold the train while Thompson called an acquaintance from the platform and talked with him.

When the marshal had finished his conversation — which sometimes lasted as long as half an hour — he would holster his gun, drive his buggy off the tracks and signal the engineer to go ahead.

The Good Old Days Texas' first interurban line began operating between Denison and Sherman on May 1, 1901. Later, as the Texas Electric Railway Co., its tracks extended more than 200 miles south through Dallas to Waco.

Progress, however, outgrew the trolley and the first interurban line in the state also was destined to be the last.

On Dec. 31. 1948, the last run was made from Denison to Dallas.

If the six residents of Kiomatia, in Red River County, seem confused about what to call home, it's understandable.

Their hamlet was settled in 1816 as Pecan. Point, but was renamed Kiomatia (an Indian word meaning "clear

water") in 1850. In 1855, the name was changed to Flintham's Tannery, then back to Kiomatia again in 1868 and then to Hook's Ferry in 1875. A year later, it was Kiomatia again, then it 'became Kiamache in 1898, back to Kiomatia in 1908, then Scrap in 1910.

Since 1924, it has been Kiomatia, — and the citizens hope that the name sticks.

When Coal Was King About a dozen Texans still make a living from coal mining — an industry that employed more than 5,000 people in the state about a half century ago.

Records indicate that the Indians were the first miners, digging lignite for fuel. In the late 1880's, the first bituminous coal mines began operating.

By World War I, more than 2 million tons of coal were being taken from Texas mines each year. After the war, the industry slowly declined.

Z napoleonskych valek zustala pamatka na naysi v Patku. Kdyt v roce 1813 tahla tudy na sever pruska jizda, zastavila se k ocipoeinku a pod lipou si ziidila polni kovarnu. Dravk vir tivota ji stale drtel ye svem zajeti. Zmital ji jako bezmocnou htiekou. zlomil jeji silo a odolnost a neptipustil, aby volneji vydechla.
