From The Editor LOOKING AHEAD — AND BACE As it must, and always has, the old year of 1965 will soon fade into the past, leaving the assessments of its achievements — or lack of them — to the writers of history. In many ways j 1.965 Soemed to be an historic year, but j when you look at it from a very broad perspective, so was 1964, 1963, and .3o on • • It has been a good year for the' SPJST, indeed, a "banner year." Our j society, in general, is becoming stronger and bigger. However, there is no reason to believe that this will continue.' automatically and of itself. It will continue only if we all do our share and contribute, each in our own way, to such growth and expansion. The campaign to get new members must continue, and we must KEEP the ones we gain. We must continue to remind ourselves, from time to time, of the basic principles and ideals upon which the Order was founded. In our constant quest for growth and bigness we must not lose sight of fraternal objectives and principles. If we ever cast aside thase fundamental creeds of a fraternal society, we will be nothing more than a mass amalgamation of people with no common bond or purpose.

The future lookS fairly bright, j and barring a world-wide conflagration, nothing should hinder our future progress and grOwth. If the nation's economy remains stable, fraternal insurance societies — like all other seg ments of our economy — shall continue to reap the overall benefits.

• • We should take time, as the new year rapidly advances, to look back and take stock, or "inventory," of what has been done in your lodge the past year. Are you, the individual, really satisfied with what has been accomplished, or dissatisfied with what has NOT been accomplished? If you can honestly answer yes, then that's that. If not, then what do you plan to do about it, if anything at all? If you feel your lodge is in a rut, how do you plan to get out of it? If inequities exist, how do you plan to remed y them? Got any new and different ideas to make your lodge go forward?

• To the oldest members, we wish to recognize their past efforts for a job well done, after many years of hard work. Let them continue to be in our

Wednesday, December 29, 1965 midst, advise us, hope with us for a better day, and may they derive satisfaction from the toils of the younger ones who have assumed the mantle of leadership.

• • It is true that sometimes the clouds on the horizions seem ever darker and forbidding, but a study of history will reveal that there was hardly a time that this was not true, to some extent.

Trying times teach us patience and perseverance. We must not falter or -hesitate. The storms of time and life will come and go, and alas, peace and harmony will reign again. Sometimes the price we have to pay is high, but then the stakes are also becoming higher. It was Franklin who said that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," and this maxim is proving to be more credible with each passing generation.

• • Let us then, hope and WORK for a better day; have faith in what is to come. Let us welcome 1966 with a renewed determination to succeed in all our endeavors, so that when it comes to an end, we can look back and say with great inner satisfaction, "what a wonderful year it was!"

SIX KINDS OF PEACE It has been said that there are six kilitis of peace, and that he who is given all of these will never want for anything else — not for health nor wealth, for love, for contentment, for beauty, for friends. The six kinds of peace are: The peace that comes from goodwill between nations; the peace that comes when neighbors help each other; the peace that man draws from nature; the peace that exists within his family; the peace that exists between himself and God; and, finally, peace with himself.

litSTNtIC PUBLIC RELATIONS — 1966 A great step in the field of public relations and advertising for the SPJST was taken in a. special meeting at the office of the Supreme Lodge last Dec. 4th. Present were members of the Supreme Lodge, Temple, the seven directors, your editor, plus the seven district organizers.

The main purpose of that meeting was to hear tentative plans for an intensive advertising program, as outliped by the Ted Workman Advertising firm of Dallas, a firm specializing in public relations and advertising for insurance firms. This meeting and program grew out of a desire, on the part of many people in the SPJST at all levels, to have the SPJST known to many people, to let them know who and what we are and. what we have to offer. Mr. Workman and two associates outlined roughly how the plan, if approved, would work: 1) His firm would prepare a brochure which would give complete data on the SPJST, background and organization, special youth and adult programs, information on the various insurance plans, solvency of the Order, etc. This brochure would be used mainly for new members, prospective members, and would serve as a tool by our organizers; 2) The advertising firm would also launch an intensive radio campaign, after first test marketing a Central Texas radio listening area. The campaign would then be used in other areas throughout the state. Programs would probably be 15 minutes in length, with appropriate advertising "spots" to promote. SPJST insurance sales.

The radio test market campaign, at $14 per 15-minute program, six days a week, for 13 weeks, would cost us a total of $1,092.00 The brochures would be printed for us at net cost. For all their services the Ted Workman Advertising firm is seeking a one-year agreement at $500 a month, cancelable after a six-month trial period.

The firm employs the best of writing and artistic talents in the country, and is a member of the nation's leading advertising fraternities.

Stated again, the aim of such a program would be to acquaint thousands of people, from one end of the state to the other, about the SPJST, what it is, and what benefits may be derived from being a member. We have a good, solid, marketable product, but it has been the feeling of some that we have not promoted that product with sufficient vigor. Hence, the proposed advertising campaign. Only the Order as

a whole can benefit from such a venture.

The final decision on whether to purchase the services of the mentioned advertising firm will be made in the first quarterly meeting of the Supreme Lodge in the early part of January 1966. If it is approved, more details will be forthcoming, more immediately to the district and local organizers, and, of course, by way of your local radio station, later in the year. —Editor Happy New Year!

Newsbriefs Rosalie Macalik, 87, passed away in nis recently. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in Ennis. Sister Macalik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. in Ennis.

• • Frank Machart, 81 passed away in Calliham, McMullen County on Dec. 16th. Burial was in the Three Rivers Cemetery. Brother Machart was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 113, George West, Texas.

• Edmund Klapuch, 73, passed away in Taft on Nov. 25th. Burial was in the Moravian Catholic Cemetery. Brother Klapuch was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 23 in Moravia.

• Jerry Tomas, 72, passed away in Ganado on Nov. 29th. Brother Thomas was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 138, Ganado.

• • Matilda Rubac, 62, passed away in 'T'e.mple on Dec. 9th. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery in Buckholts. Sister Rubac was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston.

• • Jos. J. Rektorik, 74, passed away in Weimar on Dec. 9th. Brother Rektorik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 23, Moravia.

• • Chas. R. Beyer, 68, passed away in Bay City on Dec. 14th. Burial was in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Blessing. Brother Beyer was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 148. MR. AND MRS. JOHN MATOSKA, SR. JOHN MATOSKAS CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. John Matoska, Sr., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 24th, with a surprise dinner and gathering at the Beyersville SPJST lodge hall. Their daughter, Mrs. Ann Gensler of Taylor, and their two sons, Joe of Waco and John of Taylor, were hosts at the reception-dinner.

Mr. and Mrs. Matoska were married at the Brethren Church in Taylor in 1915. Mrs. Matoska is the former Annie Julie Simcik. They have 10 grand-

children and two great grandchildren.

The center of attraction at the appropriately-decorated table was the cake topped by the numbers "50" in gold, plus a very well arranged money tree in honor of the couple.

Guests attended from Taylor, Waco, and Granger, with the guest traveling the greatest distance coming from Winston Salem, North Carolina. Both Mr. and Mrs. Matoska have been members of the SPJST over 50 years.

CHORAL GROUP, LODGE 66, WACO

LODGE NO. 38, KOVAR Dear Vestnik Readers, We had our regular meeting on Dec. 12, and also had a Christmas program.

The children taking part in the program were Alfred Susen, Kenny amen, Larry Susen, Elizabeth Svoboda, Cary Bonorden, Cheryl Bonorden, Rickie Evicic, Gary Meduna, Amy Fritz, After the program we had refreshments and Santa Claus came and had gifts of fruit for all the children. We also had a lot of children visitors.. Everyone had a very nice time.

Our next meeting will be on the second Sunday in January. We'll be seeing you all then.

Wednesday, December 29, 1965 LODGE NO. 63, SWEET HOME Dear Brothers and Sisters, We held ce:r last meting on Sunday, Dec. 12th, in conjunction with our Christmas party. Officers were elected as follows: President, William Berkovsky; Vice President, Victor J. Gerlich; Treasurer, Herman Wendt; Secretary, Felix Jurica; Financial Secretary, Mrs. Felix Jurica; Reporter, Victor Gerlich; Auditing Committee, Emil Kutac, AnnieKutac, and Mary Wendt; Resolution Committee, Millie Kutac, Milada Bolech, and Franklin Bolech; Sick Committee, Mrs. Edwin Pavlicek, Mrs. Fettx Jurica, Joe Morris, and Ben Bolech; Entertainment Committee, Victor Gerlich.

Starting Jan. 1st, 1966, our lodge will have a birthday club. Members having birthdays in January, February, and March will celebrate their birthdays in our March social. A "birthday box" will be available, and each member having birthdays these three months should drop his or her name into the box. A. drawing will be held and the lucky number will get the birthday cake. The first birthday cake. will be baked by Sister Berkovsky. If you have a birthday any of these three months, be sure and come to the meeting and 50cial in March; if you don't, come anyway and help the ones who do celebrate.

Yesterday evening Butch Macek, Dirik Matejka. and Donald Matejka came over and went deer hunting, then me and mama fixed supper for them.

EAST BERNARD LODGE NO. 28 On Dec. 19th at 7:30 p.m. the East Bernard Youth had their Christmas program.

Christmas bags were handed out to all who were there.

All the boys and girls were very glad to have Santa Claus pay us a visit.

It was decided to have a birthday cake with every social, starting with the January meeting. Brother Ronnie Berkovsky dropped on his knees when he saw Santa and Santa gave him a package. The members did not sing the "Star Spangled Banner"; it was played on a tape recorder. (This appeared as "O.T." in the reporter's letter). Mea culpa, mea maxima culPa. —Editor.

V t S TN f K LODGE NO. 66, WACO Lodge 66 had their annual Christmas party Dec. 18th, 1965 at 5:30 p.m.

There was very good atendance despite the very bad weather.

Guests from the Supreme Lodge were President and Mrs. Edward L. Marek, Bro. and Sis. Ben Zabcik, Bro. and Sis. Raymond trrba,novsky, Bro. and Sis. Joe Koliha, Bro. and Sis. Cyrill Pokladnik and family, and Bro. and Sis. Nick Morris and family.

Other visitors were Miss Maggie Muska of the KJZT, Bro. and Sis. Uud. Zalman and daughter of Lodge 35, Elk, Bro. Joe Mazanec, Mrs. Estelle Motis, Miss Cathy Holy, and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Owens.

I am sure there were other visitors whom I failed to get, so please forgive me. We enjoyed having you very much.

After a delicious buffet supper that I am sure everyone enjoyed, Bro. EMil Hanucs introduced President Edward Mazanec, who welcomed everyone and expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present. He introduced the officers and their wives, the trustees and their wives, and committee men and their wives. He introduced Mrs. Maggie Muska of KJZT, who spoke a few words.

This and the following scene are from the traditional Nativity Scene, staged each year at Lodge 66.

He then introduced the Supreme Lodge officers and their wives. He then introduced our speaker for the evening, Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek, and his wife. Bro. Marek said he and Mrs. Marek always enjoy coming to our party, and we are always delighted to have them. He said we were gathered here tonight as Christian Brethren and friends. He read a poem, "Friendship," which he said expressed his feelings. He also spoke of the angel who appeared before the shepherds and told them of the newborn Christ Child. He quoted scripture that told the lovely Christmas story.

Bro. Marek is such a wonderful speaker and you derive inspiration from him and you get a clear understanding of fraternalism. He said we should try to understand and help our brothers and work for a world of peace.

A gift was presented to Bro. and Sis. Ed Mazanec from the lodge. Gifts were presented to Bro. and Sis. Nick Morris, and Mrs. Estelle Motis from the Choral Club. The Youth Club presented gifts to their Youth Leader, Sis. bie Parma and their President, Allen Hensel.

RVOS President George Trefny, presented a check to Lodge 66, in appreciation for letting them use Linden Hall for their meetings and parties.

President Mazanec spoke of our Welfare Committee and their projects. Sis. Agnes Mazanec spoke and said they were collecting clothing to be given to help the needy. She also told of the "Mary Sue Moore Fund" that has been started to help with the hospital bills.

Mary Sue has been under a doctor's care for the past year. A donation was taken at the party and this has gone Into the fund. The Ray Moore family

Wednesday, December 29, 1965 has been a wonderful working family in our lodge. They are always helping whenever they can and they are such faithful members. We all can now lend a helping hand and share our love with them. We can help share the load by putting some extra shoulders to lighten the load and show our brotherhood.

The lights were then turned out and the spotlights were turned on the stage, which was set in the Nativity Scene. It was really beautiful.

In the scene were: Virgin Mary — Tana Klutni Joseph — Dan Mynarcik Little Jesus — a doll, lying in a cradle.

Three Wise Men Johnnie Gaidusek, Nicholas Morris, and Eddie Mazanec.

Shepherds — Paula Scott, Emmitt Attaway, and Stephen Morris Angels — Patricia Stanislav, Julia Slovak, Margaret Gaidusek, Debra Galler, and Melanie Hanus As the scene opened, "Joy to the World," was played on the accordion

by Cathy Holy.

A poem, "The Birth of Jesus," was recited by Kay Gerlich, with "The First Noel," played softly by Cathy Holy, ending with "Silent Night." Then Cathy Holy played "Winter Wonderland," before the next scene.

8 LODGE POKROK NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: Please permit me to take this opportunity to wish you all a Healthful, Happy, and Prosperous New Year, 1966!

It was gratifying to see so many of our members present at the first annual meeting held in our new lodge home, which was held Sunday, Dec. 5th, 1965, and the interest that was taken in the proceedings and election of your officers and committees for the corning year 1966.

Some time ago, your present genial financial secretary, Sister Georgie Zaladek, announced that she could not accept nomination for the year 1966 on account of her present occupation and health reasons. Therefore, I accepted the nomination and was elected your financial secretary for the year 1966.

I appreciate your confidence and will try to serve you satisfactorily.

Many of you know that the position of financial secretary requires a considerable amount of time and responsibility, particularly in view of the fact that we now have a large membership roster, which is increasing due to the conscientious efforts of our organizers.

We can be proud of our membership growth, and we must continue to grow.

From a fraternal standpoint, however, it will be appreciated if all members will cooperate with your financial secretary by taking care of premiums and dues payments promptly when due.

All certificate premiums and local lodge dues are payable in advance, without notice, on the first day of each month and must be paid before the last day of each month. Annual premiums and local lodge dues are payable in advance on the anniversary date of the certificate. Reminders for payment of premiums and dues are generally sent out, but when a member neglects or refuses to pay before the last day of any month, he or she is subject to suspension. It is unpleasant and embarrassing for the financial secretary to suspend a member, but in most cases there may be no alternative, because there is a possibility of financial loss to your local lodge if the financial secretary inadvertently sends in payment to your Supreme Lodge and later the membership payment is refused for some reason. 'Suspension means that a member may not be covered for life insurance in the event of death.

However, suspended members are allowed 90 days after suspension to become reinstated by full payment of premiums and dues in arrears. This privilege may save members sums that

VbSTNfg may have been paid in and prevent total loss. Of course, members who have paid in several years are allowed cash or loan values, or extended insurance. The seriousness of suspension particularly applies to new members.

Please bear this in mind and I will always try to cooperate in any way I can.

Life insurance should always be uppermost in everyone's financial budget from the standpoint of investment and protection of the family. Statistics reflect that many millions of dollars of life insurance are subscribed for each year by both the so-called "poor" and "rich." Many people of wealth continue to accumulate more life insurance, and the reason is that they could not take a better "gamble" to increase the value of their estates.

Now it is a privilege for the average "poor" man to avail himself of the opportunity to protect himself, his family, and to build an estate for the future welfare of family and possible education of his children. However, once a decision is made on a good life insurance program, it is important that every effort be made to keep it in force at all times.

Members of cur great order, SPJST, are privileged to subscribe for life insurance of all classes in greater amounts by paying premiums on a monthly basis, if impossible to pay annually. If possible, it is advantageous to pay premiums annually and save the discounts and the extra time and expenses of postage, etc. The old saying is that "a dollar saved is a dollar made." By paying annually, the members save more money; also save your lodge time and expense in keeping records, stationery, postage, etc., in sending reminders and receipts.

Those members who are now paying premiums and dues monthly can start paying annually, beginning any month. Please remember that your membership and life insurance protection in the SPJST is your most important, best, and cheapest investment for yourself and your family.

This letter may be boring to some of you, and not intending to hurt anyone's feelings, but I desire to impress everyone in general to take care of their payments promptly to avoid the possibility of becoming delinquent, suspended, and expelled.

We are proud of our new lodge home, located at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th. We are continuously planning improvements and better facilities for the benefit of our membership.

The Thursday Night Christmas Social was a huge success; there were selves! The lodge is grateful to the selvs! Dear Friends, Our Christmas program at Lodge 47 turned out rather well, and I want to thank all the children who took part in the program. You were great — you always are! I also want to thank all the people who helped in any way to put on this program. I cannot name you all by name because I wouldn't have enough space! But you know, a job like this isn't just done without the cooperation of the parents, lodge officers, and directors, and for this I do thank you all!

I want especially to thank Sister Vlasta Hruska for all her help, not only on this program, but all that she has done in behalf of our youth at Star Hall. She has truly been my right hand, and I know the children and I couldn't have succeeded with out her help.

Meeting was called to order at 2:45 p.m. by President Edward Mazanec.

Pledge of Allegiance was given by Tana Kutni and Eddie Mazanec. They gave the Lodge Pledge also.

Roll call of officers showed that all were present.

Sister Rose Parma read the minutes of the last meeting. They stood approved as read.

Eddie L. Thompson took out additional insurance. We welcome all of you to Lodge 66.

A card and letter were read from Brother Emil Krejci of Corpus Christi.

He sent $15 to the Youth Club. He wished everyone a Merry Christmas. He is one of our older members and was very active in our lodge before moving to Carpus Christi.

Brother Frank Parma reported for the trustees. Brother Frank Miller read the Minutes. Brother Frank Parma thanked all who have came and helped at the lodge and he thanked all who donated their year's salary to the lodge, which will be used for some worthy cause.

She thanked everyone who came out to help put up the Christmas tree and decorations. The hall looked very pretty this year. She asked for permission to give the money left from the party to the "Mary Sue Moore Fund."

Wednesday, December 29, 1965 I want to thank the officers of Lodge 146 for the support they gave me during the past year. I know they will do their duties and send in their report of the December meeting. Speaking of the December meeting, it turned out to be a very interesting meeting. I sure enjoyed every minute of it. You who did not attend sure missed a good time —all that good food and Santa Claus, and the good refreshments. The music sure was good. Everyone had a good time.

The next meeting will be held on Jan. 2nd, 1966, one day after New Year's day. So let's all start the new year right so that the lodge will double its membership. I am not sure of the time, but I think it will be 4 p.m., Sunday. That is to give everybody time for their "beauty sleep" and rest, so you will feel refreshed for the meeting.

I am sure you will read the report of our December meeting sent to the Vestnik by our recording secretary. I am sure that there will be a notice about the next meeting.

Now a little nate about another lodge I belong to as do quite a few of you members. I was asked why I do , not write to the Vestnik concerning this lodge's meetings. Monica and Madilyn Merta, Judy Dluhos, Anita Krpec, Marian Dorotik and I sang some Christmas carols in Czech. After singing I stayed with Madilyn and Monica. We played games and had a lot of fun. FARM OUTLOOK GOOD FOR '66 Agriculture fared well in 1965 and should do even better in the years ahead, John G. McHaney, Extension ecanamist at Texas A&M University, said today that realized net farm income in 1965 reached the highest total since 1952 and may be up another quarter to a half billion dollars in 1966.

The nation's realized net farm incme for 1965 is now estimated at $14 billion. Realized net income, explains the economist, is income above production costs.

Three factors are listed by McHaney for the bright outlook for 1966. The production and price outlook looks favorable for livestock producers; the new food and agricultural act of 1965 will provide some increases, especially for crop farmers and he expects the domestic demands for farm products and exports to continue their expansion.

• A growing economy, rising incomes and population gains will result in increased consumer expenditures for food. However, he does not expect the increase to equal the six percent gain of 1965.. Commercial food purchases in 1966 will again be supplemented by such programs as national school lunch, special milk, direct distribution and food stamp program. The per capita food use is expected to hold near the 1965 figure but there will be more people to feed, he said.

Exports have played an increasingly important role in American agriculture over the past 15 years and sales abroad in 1964-65 amounted to $6.3 billion. While the value of exports may be up only moderately in 1966, McHaney expects the volume to increase by four or five per cent. Larger exports are expected for Texas feed grains and wheat but smaller for cotton.

Cotton farmers, he said will get much of the increase in government payments, about $1 billion, to offset the income effect from the reduction in price-support loan rates to competitive world price levels. Some increase to wheat farmers will result from the new legislation and the new Cropland Adjustment program will also add to increased farm income in 1966.

The economist expects production expenses to continue their upward trend and to offset much of the indicated gain in gross farm income. Prices paid for commodities, interest, taxes, and wages are expected to increase but

Taking all factors into consideration, the year ahead should be one of vigorous and generally balanced economic growth. That's the word from John G. McHaney, Extension economist at Texas A&M University.

The economist has just returned from the National Outlook Conference held in Washington, D. C. with facts and figures to back up his forecast.

There will be increases in total employment and consumer income, he says. The gross national product is expected to continue upward at a rate in line with the increase of the past year. Increased private investment in new plants and equipment; larger government purchases of goods and services; and further expansion of consumer expenditures are expected to make their contributions to the advance.

McHaney sees no great changes in residential construction nor in the net exports of goods and services.

Estimates now indicate that industry will spend $55 billion for plant equipment in 1966. This is $4 billion higher than estimated capital spending in 1965 and more than $10 billion over 1964.

The economist says government demands for goods and services are expected to provide some increase in the year ahead. Total government purchases have been rising around $1.5 billion per quarter since the end of 1962. Most of this has come from increased spending by local and state governments. Federal spending has been relatively stable during this period but has increased in recent months as a result of larger defense outlays.

The upward advance of local and state government purchases is expected to continue in 1966 as federal spending for defense requirements, says McHaney.

In addition, new federal programs affecting housing, education, recreation, health and regional development programs will contribute to greater economic activity in 1966.

Further advance in employment and output will be accompanied by a rise in consumer disposable income. It all adds up, McHaney concludes, to an-

13 the rise will be less than the increase from 1964-65.

Net income per farm in the nation in 1965 is now estimated at over $4,000 — 10 per cent above 1964 and 40 per cent above 1960 and the best in over a decade. With the continuing decline in farm numbers and farm people, per farm and per capita incomes of farmers should reach new highs in 1966.

The total value of farm assets continues to rise with most of the increase due to higher farm real estate values.

Farm debts rose sharply in 1965 and will probably increase more in 1966, but the dollar increase in debt will be much less than gains in farm assets, the economist said.

And finally, McHaney said farm equities rose in 1965 and prospects are good for a further improvement in the 'financial position of farmers in the year ahead.

FOODWISE, 1966 GETS OFF TO BOUNTIFUL START The year 1966, foodwise, will get off to a bountiful start.

Eleven foods are designated especially plentiful for the month of January. Pecans are featured. Others include grapes, grapefruit, apples, red tart cherries, oranges and orange products for mighty delicious fruit eating. reports the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

The U. S. Department of Agriculture also reports plentiful stocks of such vegetables as onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage and split peas.

The 1965 pecan estimate has been moved up to 263.8 million pounds, better than 90 million pounds more than 1964. Farm sales of native pecans in mid-December were running about 4 to 6 cents a pound less than for the same period during 1964, so add special flavor to your favorite dishes with pecans.

California's record grape crop totaling around 3.9 million tons will be sending large quantities into local markets this January. Emperors are expected to be in best supply.

Production of potatoes is up 25 per cent over the 1964 fall crop — creating the largest on record. And USDA's Consumer and Marketing Service reports heavy shipments of sweet potatoes arriving at local markets.

For some of the best in eating this January — and at reasonable cost — enjoy and use plentiful foods.

VESTRIK HERE COMES 1966!

Here comes 1966 and one thing is certain: The pace of progress quickens as the country heads deeper into the second half of the 60's. There's almost total agreement on a sixth year of boom. In fact, reports indicate less concern over a possible drop in business than at any time in the past 15 years.

What are some of the things we can expect from this coming year? Here are a few: Taxes will be up. At least you will pay more — despite lower levies 9n income this year. Social security tax is the culprit. Even employes and selfemployed in the low income brackets will feel the higher taxes, though in lesser amounts.

Price boosts can be expected and mortgage interest rates which are pushing upward could increase a quarter to a half per cent in a few months, according reliable sources.

Christmas trade is expected to inflate credit to a level "far above anything in the past" and the biggest source of credit expansion is the automobile. People owe almost 32 billion dollars for the purchase of new cars alone, and there is no sign of a slowdown.

How useful the the large supply of apples reported by the U. S. Department of Agriculture will be during the holiday season! Serve baked apples often, apple pies and dumplings.

Give your home a holiday theme with baskets of apples here and there for impulse snacking.

Dramatize your menus with the eyecatching appeal of oranges. You will enjoy them in fruit salads or as a pee-your-own dessert. Frozen concentrated orange juice is plentiful for the 6th consecutive month. Use it often in

holiday drinks and dishes.

SAVE TIME BY USING CONVENIENCE FOODS You can add more time for needed holiday shopping and other activities by including more quick-to-fix and convenience foods in your pre-Christmas menus, says Mrs. Gwendolyne Clyatt, Texas A&M University Extension consumer marketing specialist.

Plan ahead, follow food supply information and shop wisely to get the most for your food dollars, she advises.

Canned ham is a real convenience for entertaining during the holiday season. Some of the small hams — under three pounds — are sterilized and usually can be stored at room temperatures. Check the label to determine whether or not they need refrigeration.

Dairy-made eggnog and boiled custard have made their appearance on the market. There is a new low-calorie eggnog made of skim milk. This may be just the thing for the weight-conscious provided of course that you don't add extra calories one way or another, emphasizes Mrs. Clyatt.

A line of specialty spice blends is now available. The spices are combinations of flavorings necessary to season foods for which they are indicated. Blends include steak, beef, fish, Italian and French dressings. The back panel of each container has suggestions for use and recipes.

More frozen orange juice concentrate is coming to market — and prices have been reduced considerably. The juice can be used in recipes for baking cakes and cookies and for imparting a delightful flavor to rice — in addition to being a breakfast beverage.

THE FAMILY LAWYER Plaintiff's Secret Weapon Just as scientists tell of the famous apple that fell on Issac Newton's head, so do lawyers tell of a famous barrel that fell on the head of a certain Mr. Byrne. If you should ever have occasion to sue for damages, the case of the falling marrel may well give you your strongest single weapon in the courtroom.

Byrne was walking past a warehouse in an English town when a barrel of flour dropped out of a second-story window and laid him low.

Suing afterwards for damages, Byrne was faced with the task of proving negligence on the part of the warehouse employees. But he had no way of knowing why the barrel had fallen.

Nor would any of the company's employees admit fault.

Luckily for Byrne the judge came to his rescue with an apt Latin phrase: "res ipsa loquitur." That means "the thing speaks for itself." The judge reasoned that barrels simply don't fall out of warehouses that are being run in a careful manner.

Res ipsa loquitur, or something roughly similar, is now recognized in all American courts. It does not excuse an injured claimant who is charging negligence from proving his charge.

But if he lacks direct proof, it woes give him the benefit of common-sense deductions from the facts that he can prove.

A girl, eating a candy bar, bit on a pin embedded in the chocolate. Neither she nor anyone else knew how the pin had gotten there.

Yet, with no sign that the bar had been tampered with, a court ruled — "res ipsa loquitur" that the accident itself was good evidence of negligence a tthe candy factory.

However, the res ipsa loquitur doetrin, being based on common sense, is also limited by common sense. The bare fact that the plaintiff suffered an injury does not necessarily justify an inference that the defendant was negligent. There may be other plausible explanations for what happened.

For example: A passenger in a car was injured

Wednesday, December 29, 1965 when one of the tires had a blowout.

This fact alone was held not gounds for finding the driver guilty of negligence. Blowouts, said the court, can and do befall even the careful driver.

LIFE FUNDS HELP REBUILD U.S. CITIES $15 Billion Put to Work in 1960s Gleaming new towers of steel, stone, brick and glass are reaching skyward and replacing overage, run-down, outmoded or uneconomic structures in cities throughout America.

Rebuilding cities to meet modern needs is a mammoth, multi-billion dollar job, and much of the financing comes from funds of life insurance policyholders.

Financial spokesmen estimate that, so far during the 1960s, life insurance companies have invested about $15 billion in new apportments, office buildings, stores, hotels and other vital facilities for cities — including substantial amounts to help finance middle and low income housing projects under the National Housing Act. This money has been put, to work in virtually every central city area from Boston's Back Bay to the environs of Pershing Square in Los Angeles. It comes mainly from funds set aside to meet the life companies' future obligations to policyholders. Until needed, it helps to finance city redevelopment through mortgage loans, purchases of bonds and real estate and other forms of investment. Earnings from these investments help to keep down the cost of lige insurance to policyholders..

Several spokesmen predict that city redevelopment will be the most important avenue of investment for policyholders' funds in the next decade.

VESTNtIC One calls it "the investment of the future."

Another said, "The cities have got to be brought back, because they provide our basic source of employment and income.

"We must have the big, central merchandising Ifacilities that only cities can provide. Most large corporations and financial institutions will continue to be headquartered in cities, because only cities can provide the manpower they need." ;The spokesmen pointed out that, while suburbs continue to attract families with young children, there has been a definite shift back to city living among couples beyond the childrearing stage. "The drudgery and cost of commuting drives many of them back," one commented.

They noted that single people and newly-married couples are often city apartment-dwellers, and demand for apartments should rise as youngsters of the post-war "baby boom" grow up.

But they agreed that cities continue to face serious problems. Traffic strangulation and outmoded transit ifacilities require broad-scale, community planning. One spokesman said that fear of alleged crime waves may deter urban progress.

However, another said, "The point will come when cities will protect themselves adequately against crime and violence — which are also problems in the suburbs. And transit and transportation problems will be solved somehow. Cities are not going to die.

They are coming back, although it won't be fast."

He pointed out that tax revenues from projects financed by life companies should help cities solve their problems.

For example, a complex of five new office buildings and a public garage financed by his company in downtown Newark. N. J., will produce about $1,500,000 a year for the city treasury.

These properties formerly produced only $77,000 in taxes.

The original installations plus recurring property additions and refinements would revert to state ownership after 20 years and anytime during the interim should the operators default in any manner.

The proposal was signed by two Burnet men, and two Austin men. The ageement stipulates that appropriate advertising, publicity and promotion of the area will be provided.

Thu elaborat e project would mark the first substantial work on the giant subterranean area since the original improvements more than 30 years ago.

Plans call for a modern new surface installation and general overhaul of sub-surface fixtures to embellish the natural wonders. The Commission said construction work is expected to be timed so that the cavern site, ten miles from Burnet just off Highway 281, will he ready for the 1966 tourist season.

The Commission noted that the historic area is on Park Road 4 leading to Inks Lake State Park, six miles away on a scenic drive connecting with Buchanan Dam and other Highland Lakes showplaces.

The peak cavern attendance was 64,155 reached two years ago. Last year's total was 53,615.

The Commission observed that the cavern, linked with historic incidents dating back to pre-stone age times and used as a hiding place by both the Confederate Army and notorious outlaws, "is a much neglected asset of the Texas Parks and Wildlife epartment and deserves a better rating than a mere hole in the ground."

LONGHORN CAVERN TO BE RENOVATED The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission announced plans for a concession-financed renovation and construction program for converting famed Longhorn Cavern near Burnet from "just a scenic hole in the ground" to a facility worthy of its fating as the nation's third largest underground attraction.

The Commission awarded a projected

It added, "When the extensive new construction and renovation has been completed, the cavern will provide one of the state's most fascinating and beautiful facilities."

The cavern, rated only behind Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico, and Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, was formed an estimated 500 million years ago by a mighty earth movement that permanently sealed the hard granite forma-

tion. It has a constant year around temperature of 64 degrees.

General stability has enhanced the natural ruggedness and particularly the delicate effects from stalactites, stalagmites, calcite crystals and massive flowstone deposits. Potholes, solution domes, channels and pits constitute the more common erosional feation domes, channels and pits constitures.

Remains of prehistoric creatures have been found far underground but comparatively few types of plants and animals have been observed, beyohd bats, cave crickets and algae. Flint and primitive tools definitely linked the stone-age man with this area.

INCOME, SCHOOLING RISE STAND OUT IN WEW GENERATIOY OF FAMILIES A picture of the typical American family and its salient characteristics after some two decades of change and unparalleled progress in the economy emerges from the population studies conducted by the U. S. Bureau of the Census.

What stands out in a look at this generation as compared with the preceding one is the great upgrading that has taken place in earning power and in educational attainment, two elements that are so intimately interrelated in our technological world.

Expanded Well-Being For the average family, these and other developments have translated themselves into more material possessions than ever before, and far more personal protection in life insurance, savings and investments, and public and private pension and retirement programS. This expanded wellbeing takes on added significance from the fact that men and women are marrying younger, living longer, and have more leisure time in their working life as well as in later years.

A recent Census Bureau report shows that median family income in its steady expansion over the years came close to a record $6,600 in 1964. This was a sixth greater than at the beginning of the current decade and was more than double the annual level in the early postwar period in 1947. The greater part represented an increase in real buying power since the rate of expansion in median income was three times as great as that of the Consumer Price Index in the 17-year period.

It is true that close tc a fifth of the nation's 48 million families still have

an income of less than $3,000 a year, the government's poverty level. However, the number and proportion of such families have been declining steadily over the years, The figures also show a big decrease in the $3,000 to $5,000 income range but the trend had been up in the higher brackets.

Last year nearly 11 million families, or more than one in every five, had incomes of $10,000 or more. In 1947, by contrast, this group numbered little more than a million and represented ibut one family in 37.

Factor of Second Income One of the big changes in family life contributing to this upward income push is the double paycheck. Thanks largely to the working wife, families with two or more earners now outnumber those with one by more than two million. A decade and a half ago single-earner families were far in the lead with a mar gin of more than 6 million. And the typical family today also has an additional income from a variety of public and private "nonwork" sources, much of it from savings and investments.

A spectacular expansion in thrift and its distribution among the population has taken place as a consequence.

Life insurance in force today adds up to more than $800 billion, over four times the 1947 total. A comparable growth has occurred in life insurance ownership per family, which crossed the $13,000 mark in 1964 and now represents three and a half times the 1947 figure. The OASDI program covers the predominant part of the working population. About half of all private nonagricultural workers are enrolled in addition under private pension and retirement plans, insured and noninsured combined. A generation ago only a small minority enjoyed this protection. Along with this, the number Of savers has grown greatly, and currently runs up to around 100 million savings depositors and more than 120 million life insurance policyholders.

Rising Educational Attainment The figures for the rising educational attainment of the population are equally striking. A recent Census Bureau study reported that the median years of school completed by persons 25 years old and over came to 11.7 years in March 1C94, a third greater than in the early postwar period. What makes this trend especially impressive is that more then one family in every five is now headed by a person who went to college, the majority of whom hold a degree. Close to three

The figures show that families with four or more dependent children, those under 18 living at home, have been pacing the growth in the nation's family structure. They now represent one family in every 9, close to double the proportion in the early postwar period.

Three-child families have grown almost as much.

CANNED MEATS OFFER MENU VARIETY Canned meats san provide creative cooks with the necessary ingredients for appetizing dishes that appeal to families and guests, reminds Mrs. Gwen Clyatt, Texas A&M University Extension consumer marketing specialist.

She says that canned meat sales have risen 58 per cent in the last 10 years.

There are practical reasons for the popularity of canned meats. Economy is a big factor. Preparation at big meat packing centers makes for economy of production. Since all trimming a n d boning has been done before packaging, every ounce of canned meat is edible. There's no bone or gristle to be discarded — and because the meat is processed, there is no shrinkage in home preparation. Only a minimum of fuel is needed if the meat is to be served hot.

The variety of shelf and refrigerated canned meat items at the supermarket may surprise you. There are 100 different items available — and it's a supply you can depend on all year long.

Ready-to-serve canned meats provide easy menu planning, quick preparation and successful dishes. They also offer shopping storage conveninece. The air-tight sanitary containers prevent spoilage. Genarally, no refrigeration is necessary unless stated on canned whole hams and some other meats of three pounds and over.

This week's beef prices are about the same as last week. Pork prices are easing downward a bit. Good beef buys includechuck roasts, rib roasts, round and sirloin steaks, stew meats and ground beef; Pork shoulder roasts and end-cut loin roasts are good pork values.

—SPJSTSCIENTISTS DEVELOP A NEW TEXTILE MATERIAL Researchers have developed a new.; textile material whose uses range from interlinings for apparel and backing materials for leather to rugged automobile tire chafers.

It can best be described as a sheet structure formed, by ingenious spinning and bonding of polyester fibers, says Mrs. Lynn Parks Styles, Texas A&M University Extension consumer education specialist.

"Reemay" (pronounced Ree-may) is the trademark given this new material . The generic name "spun-bonded" was, coined to differentiate this unique class of products from other textile materials.

"Reemay" can be custom tailored.

The fibers can be crimped to form a soft, conformable material or used straight for a rigid starched-like material. It can be made lightweight or heavy, thin or bulky, white, or if color is desired, it can be dyed.

VESTNfP The new material has high strength.

It does not lose its strength when used, as it is chemically unaffected by perspiration and moisture. It can be cut in any direction without fraying or raveling. Because of its highly porous structure, "Reemay" offers good breathability and carries away moisture readily, thus drying rapidly.

The apparel industry is using interlinings of "Reemay" for washable and wash-and-wear garments including blouses, dresses, brassieres and shirts. Spunbonded interlinings are ideally suited for apparel because they resist wilting, shrinking, seam puckering and discoloring. They dry quickly after washing and are easy to iron.

"Reemay" is also used principally in the interior of men's, women's and children's shoes. The shoe industry is using it as a backing for leather and vinyl linings.

On Christmas Eve, 1837, Isaac Killough, Sr., arrived in East Texas from Alabama with a group of settlers and established a little community with the blessing of the Indians. During the

next spring and summer, however, the mood of the Indians changed and there were a few attacks on the settlement.

Killough decided to abandon it, but the Cherokees agreed to let the settlers stay until they could gather their fall crops.

In mid-October, however, the Cherokees struck without warning and either killed or captured 18 people. The survivors escaped to Nacogdoches, and it is their descendants who meet to commemorate one of the most tragic Indian massacres in Texas history._ Happy New Year!

Not All That Glitters A cell in the Comal County jail in New Braunfels is the present resting place of Texas' most publicized "buried treasure."

On August 24, 1964, two workmen digging a pipeline ditch near New Braunfels uncovered a metal box.

When it was opened, it appeared to be filled with gold coins issued in the 1700's by the King of Spain — and worth $3,000 each to collectors today.

Closer examination, however, revealed that 2,352 of the discs in the chest were nothing but metal washers. And the 84 Spanish "coins" which covered them were brass, not gold. Who counterfeited the "treasure" and why are questions that still haven't been answered.

Just how stupendous the U. S. holiday decoration business is, when viewed nationally, can be illustrated by this set of statistics from a chain store.

If all the strands of "tinsel rain" sold by the stores last year were laid end to end, they would circle the earth 50 times, reach to the moon, make 10 trips around it, return to earth and still have enough remaining to trim all the trees in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and a few other cities. It would weigh almost 10,000 tons.

The company said these figures would increase this year, as they have for the past several years for three good reasons — more marriages, more children, and more home owners.

Quite Hour Each morning at 8 o'clock, a bell used to ring out over the 465-acre campus of Jarvis Christian College. It was the signal for all work to stop while each person bowed his head for a moment of thanksgiving.

So regular was the practice that even the mules pulling the walking plows in the college fields would lower their heads at the sound of the bell. The old bell was lost years ago, but a morning devotional is still held at the Wood County school.

A bylo pied kym se branit: Avail, Tatati, Mad'afi, Turd. . . kolik se objevilo u jeho hracleb nevitanYch hostil! Dobyli ho a vypalili i hasite. Vithec, polary innohokrat znieily cele mesto i zamek vznikly na miste pfutrodniho hradu. Naposled to bylo v rote 1945, kdy tu zaloaili zloeinny ponaciste. Po staleti zde vladly cizi rody: nejdfiv Lichten gtejnove, pc) nich.

Ditrichg tejnove. Ale byl to vZdycky zase lid, kterY Mikulov zvedl z trosek a spalenigt' a obnovil to pamatne a cenne, co vYbudovala staleti.
