From The Editor Every holiday has its own spirit — Easter, Thanksgiving, etc., but the spirit of Christmas is the brightest, warmest spirit of all. It is a spirit of wonder, a spirit of faith, a joy in living, and an expression of goodwill.

All of the Christmas spirit centers around the home, which is the magnet that draws the wanderers back to the old homeplace at Christmastime, Home provides the setting whose warmth binds loved ones together in true Christmas spirit. Friendships and acquaintances are renewed, family ties are renewed. The joy of Christmas is SHARING — sharing your home and your love. All the trappings of our modern Christmases are only outward manifestations of what Christmas is all about; the real spirit of Christmas comes from within oneself. Truly, the home is the most wonderful place in the world!

There will be those who will not be there for Christmas. There will be those who lay ill in hospitals; others whose duties require their presence elsewhere; there are those who are fulfilling their service obligations to their country in distant corners of the world or in the tropical jungles Of Viet Nam; then there are those for whom Christmas peals no more, gone to their eternal reward.

Even though there are scattered clowds of darkness on the horizion, men and women will again raise their voices in salute to one another. The struggles of life, with all its hazards and hardships, are temporarily forgotten. We renew our faith and hope. Our eyes are raised to see the sun is still shining, that there is still some good in the world. We see the beauty of life reflected in the smiles, love, and care of others. We realize our many blessings. Our burdens seem a lot lighter than they had seemed before. We reflect upon the year gone by and lay firm plans for the year ahead. We hope to build in an - atmosphere of universal good will.

Let us face Christmas with a relaxed attitude, instead of a frenzied, commercialized, hectic attitude. Try to see it in its true light, with its true spiritual meaning, instead of its worldly aspects. Don't be stampeded into frenzied buying of expensive gifts. They won't last long. If you feel you MUST give someone an expensive gift, you're taking the fun out of real giving! The recipient of the gift wants your respect and affection more than anything else.

Remember that. This is an emotionally- charged time of the year. Don't do anything to strain relationships.

Finally, it goes without saying that the spirit of Christmas should stay with us throughout the coming months.

It should not be like the person who embraces the minister's sermon heart and soul while he is in the church and then starts malicious gossip as soon as he hits the front steps of the church.

• • Let us pray that strength and courage abundant be given to all who work for a world of reason and understanding — that the good that lies in every man's heart may day by day be magnified — That men will come to see more clearly not that which divides them, but that which unites them — That each hour may bring us closer to final victory, not of nation over nation, but of man over his own evils and weaknesses — that the true Spirit of this Christmas Season, its joy, its beauty, its hope and above all its abiding faith, may live among us — that the blessings Of peace be ours, the peace to build and grow, to live in harmony and sympathy with others, to plan for the future with confidence. ♦ • May I express my sincere appreciation for all the cards and expressions of kindnesses during this Christmas Season. CAROL ANN NESUDA ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Nesuda, Telico Road, Ennis, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Carol Ann, to Ronald Wayne Mraz, of 909 North McKinney, Ennis. The wedding has been set for Jan. 29th, 1966 at St. John's Catholic Church in Ennis.

Carol Ann is a graduate of Ennis High School, and is a junior at Sam Houston State College in Huntsville.

She will soon transfer to the University of Houston. At Sam Houston State Carol is a member of the Pennybacker Club and the Industrial Arts Club.

Carol has served as District III Queen, SPJST, and is presently Youth Director of District III, SPJST. She is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis.

Ronald Wayne is a graduate of Ennis High School, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. V. Mraz of Ennis. He served in the U. S. Navy, with duty aboard the carrier, Kearsage. He also served

six months with the Navy in Antartica.

He is presently employed with the National Aeronautic 'Space Agency. Ronald is also a member of SPJST Lodge No. 25, Ennis. The couple plan to make their home in Houston.

The families of both the prospective bride and bridegroom are members of SPJST Lodge No. 25, in Ennis.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fojtik, Sr., of Rosenberg were honored on their 45th wedding anniversary on Nov. 28, in the American Legion Hall in Rosenberg. Their six children were hosts at the gala reception. Sixty-five guests came from Damon, Eagle Lake, Richmond, La Grange, Dallas, and other points in Texas. The Fejtiks are members of SPJST Lodge No. 64, Plum.

• Frances Demek, 79, passed away in a Waco nursing home on Dec. 12th.

Interment was in the Bold Springs Memorial Park near West. Sister Demek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 36, West.

August E. Pustejovsky, 77, passed away in his home in Schulenburg on Dec 11th. Burial was in the Schulenburg City Cemetery. Brother Pustejovsky was a member of SPJST Lodge 67, Schulenburg. a

Anna Griegar, 69, passed away in a Taylor hospital on Dec. 12th. Interment was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Sister Griegar was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor.

• Albert Psencik, Jr., passed away in Plum on Dec. 10th. He was 68. Brother Psencik was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 68, Plum.

• Mary Martha Kopecky, 88, passed away in Matagorda General Hospital in Bay City on Dec. 2nd. Interment was in Collegeport Cemetery in Collegepert.

Miller, Secretary --SPJ 6THOME LODGE NO. 63 Dear Friends, Our lodge president, Bro. Win. Berkovsky, called the 10:t meeting to order on Dec. 12th at 1 p.m. We sang the "Star Spangled Banner." The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Sister Elaine Berkovsky. The p resident welcomed our guests, Brother and Sister Paul Sablatura of Louise, and Mr. Robert Werner of Shiner.

Brother Sablatura spoke briefly, expressing his thanks for being invited to our meeting and Christmas party, and ending with a couple of good jokes.

Brother Selix Juries: read the minutes from the last meeting. There was no old business. It was decided that starting with our January meeting we have a birthday with every social.

The election of officers took place.

Committees were appointed. (Names in the next issue). Door prizes were awarded. The meeting adjourned at 2 .m . , until the third Sunday in January.

The Christmas party got under way immediately with refreshments and singing of Christmas carols. All of a sudden Santa entered, met the child-den and started giving parcels to each one. Presents were exchanged by Santa and the Christmas spirit was everywhere! Because of his very busy schedule Santa had to bid us farewell, wishing us the -best for the Christmas season. Everyone then visited and looked at their presents. The singing continued all afternoon. Music was furnished

by Robert Werner of Shiner on the guitar, Leon Zissa on accordion, Godfrey Berkovsky on accordion, Denis Berkovsky on saxophone. Thanks very much, boys! Lunch was served and Brother Paul Sablatura got out his accordion and got a group singing started. This went on until we the crowd broke up, each wishing the other a Merry Christmas.

Brother Felix Jurica was so excited and afraid of Santa because he had been such a bad boy all year that he

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 even forgot to bring his minutes to the meeting and had to drive home to get them. You guessed it — he blamed his wife for it! Brother Herman Wendt was so disappointed when Santa didn't give him a package that he went home and left his book at the hall. Brother Wm. Berkovsky was so happy when Santa brought him a package. I guess he fooled Santa after all! Brother Ronnie Berkovsky dropped down on his knees when he saw Santa an hour later and gave him a package.

I want to thank everyone who came out and helped make this party such a great success. The attendance was one of the largest we have had. Happy New Year to all!

As we waited for Santa Claus to arrive, Sister Jeanette Lesika.r led the audience in some Christmas carols.

Finally, Santa Claus arrived and gave each child and all present a bag of goodies. I believe everyone had a nice time. Many thanks to all who helped in any way to make this party a success.

Dear Editor Morris, Sisters, and Brothers: It has been quite a while since I saw anything in the Vestnik from our lodge at Holland.

As this year draws to a close, we should all be thankful for the many blessings that were bestowed upon us during the past year. Let us all think about this more seriously as this Christmas season draws near. Let us all put more Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood into more action, as our Slavonic Benevolent Order wishes us to do.

As to the activities of our lodge during this year up to now, we have secured 26 new members, and 4 members transferred from other lodges. According to the report of the treasurer of our building fund, we owe $7,200.00 on our new hall. I think we are doing O.K. with our entertainments to have reduced the debt on our hall to that figure in the 26 months since we built it.

I want to ask our members to make a New Year's resolution that they will attend the lodge meetings in larger numbers during the coming year.

In our December meeting the following were elected to carry on the lodge business for the coming year: Jos. Dear Friends, First of all, I want to congratulate Staite Youth Director and Mrs. James J. Janousek, the parents of a fine baby daughter, Joanna Marie!

The District Youth Directors met with State Youth Director James J. Janousek and Vice President Joe B. Hejny at Temple on Dec. 11th. President Edw. L. Marek welcomed us and spoke briefly on the progress made by the SPJST. Much was accomplished at this meeting; plans were made for the new year. I feel that if all cooperate with the youth leaders, we have a great future for our youth; we surely have an energetic and highly qualified State Youth Director to guide us all!

We had a number of ladies who contributed cakes and pies on the day of our annual meeting, and I am indebted to ',Sister Annie Vala for the list.

I do hope you are also making plans for the big weekend — three popular orchestras in three days! We will have Jimmy Brosch for the Semi-Formal New Year's Eve Dance from 9 'til ?, Herbert Klesel's Knights of Dixie on Saturday, January 1 from 9 'til 1, and LeRoy Matocha for the dance on Sunday, Jan. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.! Don't miss any of this fun!

Progressive Lodge No. 168 met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Novosad on Friday, Dec. 10th. Not many members were present. Mr. and Mrs. Schrank, of McAllen, and Mr. and Mrs. Baker of Charlotte were guests.

Gus Novosad presided over the meeting since the president and vice president were out of town. Business at hand was election of officers for 1966 and they are: President — Evan Barta, Vice President — Mrs. Eleanor Locke, Financial Secretary — Gus Novosad, and Secretary — Mrs. Mary Ann Barta.

Mrs. Melba Novosad was named Youth leader. Some letters and forms were attended to and the meeting was adjourned.

A , Christmas social followed which was enjoyed by all. The kiddos exchanged gifts and Gus Novosad handed out bags of candy treats to them.

We hope to have more members present at our next meeting.

Fraternally, Mary Ann Barta, Secretary LODGE NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE

Dear Members and Friends, Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, Dec. 5th. The meeting was called to order by President B. C. Stalmach who called for the reading of the minutes. Minutes were read and approved as read.

The meeting was used mainly for discussing our Christmas party which is now a thing of the past. I hope that

everyone enjoyed the party since it was quite a success. The children gave a very nice program and shortly thereafter Santa arrived to the unanimous delight of the youngsters. All in all it was a very nice gathering.

After much discussion about our November meeting, the members voted to devote the entire January meeting to the purpose of electing officers for 1966. Therefore, we urge all interested members to please be present at this meeting, Sunda y. Jan. 2nd.

Due to the hard work of a few, this past year has been one of much success and surpasses any year we have had for a long time. Let's keep up the fine work and try to get someone else to join in the work.

We will have a dance Christmas night, Dec. 25th. Music will be by Ladis Vrazel. We invite all our friends to come out and make this a huge success.

There was no winner of our door prize so maybe you will be the lucky one on Jan. 2nd.

Our heart-felt sympathies are sent to Mrs. Leon Shiller who lost her father in illness.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank my many friends and supporters who have helped me this year in my job as reporter for Lodge 48. This is my last report, and I must say I have enjoyed doing it very much even if it has sometimes gotten to be somewhat of a task. FORT WORTH SOKOL AND LODGE 154 LADIES' CIRCLE Dear Members and Friends, Our December meeting was held Dec. 1st in Sokol Hall amid the Christmas season atmosphere. A wonderful turkey dinner was served to our families and friends. Gifts were distributed and a money donation was given to St. Teresa's Childrens Home. Tickets on the lovely quilt made by our good ladies are still being sold. I would like to thank all the ladies who worked so hard to make our every meeting a success. I would like to thank our president, Mrs. Josephine Prochaska, for being at ecery meeting and always keeping it running smoothly. Thank yoo, Mrs. Mason and Mrs. Albercht, our secretary and treasurer, for your

time and effort in a jab well done.

Our next meeting will be Jan. 5th, with election of officers held on that day. Dues will also be collected.

Fraternally, Mrs. Rose Steinman -SPJSTROBSTOWN LODGE NO. 117 Dear Members, Robstown Lodge No. 117 held its regular meeting on Dec. 5th, with a small attendance, mostly sisters. Brother members, do come to the meetings because it is everybody's duty to attend a meeting once in a while, if not always.

The election of officers was held. All of the officers were reelected by acclamation. They are as follows: President and Reporter — Sister Betty Jurica Secretary — Sister Pavelka, Vice President — Sister Darlene Edwards Treasurer — Bro. Dear Vestnik Readers, The meeting was called to order on Dec. 12th, 1965. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and then the roll was called. We had eighteen present. Dues were collected, then the treasurer's and secretary's reports were given.

We then discussed old and new business. Under new business we discussed having a party for all the members on Dee. 22, 1965. We will also give gifts to each of the members who have attended six or more meeting.; during the year. The party will start at seven and refreshments will be taken care of by the club so just bring yourself, because we hope to see a big turn-out.

Door prizes were awarded to Virginia Rebecek and Michael Majek. The birthday for the month was Steven Mikush. Happy Birthday, Steven!

The next meeting will be on Jan. 9th. This will start a new year, so we will elect new officers. We hope to see everyone, present so we can have another successful year like the last. The club wants to thank Mrs. Judy Majek, leader, and Mrs. Margaret Majek, assistant director, for their excellent work. Wednesday, December 22, 1966 RePOrtS NOVEMBER SALES IN DISTRICT 5 Since this is the twelfth month of 1965 and this will be my last report appearing in our Vestnik this year, I wish to take the opportunity to extend my wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous and Successful New Year to all organizers in District 5. I also express sincere thanks to all who worked so tirelessly and devoted their time to achieve such overwhelming results. YOU have more than doubled our 1965 quota in eleven months. As of now, we have $230,395 over three million dollars of insurance sold and still have one more month to go. I have a feeling we will reach the 31/2million mark by the end of 1965. YES? District Five has 57 appointed organizers. Of these, 36 have written insurance. I wish to remind the remaining 21 slow organizers that 1966 will open the door to any one who feels SPJST in their blood. I don't have to remind you that we surely have a good product — just take it and demonstrate it to your prospective buyer. What we have can be sold with a clear conscience because the product we offer is genuine. It is wrong to make promises concerning something we do not have.

That leads to misreprsentation. By all means avoid that! I hope the 21 organizers who have not shown any life in 1965 will be ready to go full speed ahead in 1966.

It makes me very proud that the newly - appointed organizers have shown good potential to rate as successful underwriters in the future. As I see, District Five will be able to boast, (I hope), with a ONE-MILLIONDOLLAR organizer. This will be quite an achievement to the individual and a record for our district! We also have another organizer with a half-million in insurance written. District Five has nine organizers in all who went way over the $100,000 mark.

FROM TH•OFFICE OF THE STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR On Dec. 11th, the youth directors from all seven districts, Brother Hejny and I met in Temple at the home office. I am very happy to report that

There was a great example of frateitgaal harmonyj and cooperation shown in the preparing of our 1966 program of youth activities. I can say at this time that we are proposing several new contests and extensive revisions to some of our present contests. Our proposals will be submitted to the officers and district directors of SPJST at their meeting in January, the results of which I will report to you.

Presently, I am working with the youth directors of each district to conduct seminars in each district to present, explain, and answer questions about our 1966 program. These meetings will be in the latter weeks of January, and I am looking forward to them with great anticipation.

Let us join together with a spirit of fraternal harmony and cooperation.

Together we can work to make 1966 one of the best years in our order's youth program.

Dear Readers, We had our meeting yesterday.

Thursday night we had a Christmas parade in Bryan, which we all went to see and enjoy. I really enjoyed it because I got to ride a horse. I really love horses. The horse won first place (ha, ha). That made me mad because the horse is prettier than I. The other' day we went into the woods and daddy built a fire. He had a big fire going. We went back to the house to get some meat and made barbecue and ate in the woods.

Mother and I finished our sewing, and now we go fishing or hunting together. We still go deer hunting, and daddy still comes after us, because it's easy to get up in the tree but not so easy to get down.

My brother Teddy killed a deer this season.

Well, Christmas is almost here, I really mean close. I've been real sweet.

I have to he sweet if I want anything.

Santa's not coming to see mama bec aa[se she's mean. She makes me cock supper and then wash the dishes.

I really do want Santa to bring me a dish washer (and be sure to bring Gary, my brother, an all-day sucker!).

Teddy went to a basketball game tonight at Franklin and the mean thing wouldn't even let me go!

Well, it's 9 o'clock and I have to clean up and roll my hair.

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 tried to guess what was inside. No one guessed, so the package was opened and inside was a package of spaghetti.

Afterwards, there was a Santa's toy relay race and a good imitation of a snowball fight. The players were divided on two sides and began crumpling newspapers to resemble snowballs. At a given signal the participants began throwing the "snowballs." When the "snowballs" were cleared away Santa Claus appeared and handed out stockings filled with toys and candy.

Then refreshments were served.

LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE The Hallettsville Youth Club held their Christmas program on Dec. 12th at 7:30 p.m.

I am sorry I do not have the program, but nevertheless it was a good program and everyone enjoyed it. After the program there was singing by the grownups. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sablatura were there. Bro Paul had his accordion with him, so there was plenty of music and singing. Refreshments were served.

Thanks to Mrs. Selma Grones and her assistants for preparing the program, and all those who made it possible for an evening well spent.

Everyone departed with the Christmas spirit.

Sister Valchar was our last charter member, whom we will miss.

HONEY NUT CAKE This Honey Nut Cake, Greek in origin, tastes deliciously of far-off places. It's a moist cake that keeps well.

Finely chopped pecans or almonds lend their rich flavor to the cake which is delicately spiced with instant coffee.

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 Honey Nut Cake 6 egg yolks 2/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs 1 teaspoon instant coffee 1/, teaspoon canilla 2 cups finelly ground almonds or pecans 6 egg whites, stiffly beaten 1/2 cup honey Beat egg yolks and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in bread crumbs, coffe, salt and vanilla. Fold in ground nuts. Fold in beaten egg whites . Line the bottom of a 9-inch spring form tube pan with waxed paper or baking paper. Do not grease sides or tube. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 350 F. for 45 minutes.

Invert on a cooling rack and let cool in the pan for 1 hour. Loosen edges and turn cake upside down on a baking sheet or plate; remove paper from bottom. Warm honey and spoon about 2/3 of it over the botton of the cake.

Invert cake on serving plate and glaze top with remaining honey. Serve with whipped cream if desired.

Stir in dates.

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 Add liquid all at once to flour mixture, stirring only until flour is moistened. Turn into baking dish. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm with lemon sauce.

Lemon Sauce: Blend together 1 pack age (3 3/4 -ounce) instant lemon pudding and 1-cup cold water. With rotary beater or electric mixer beat slowly 5 minutes. Serve with warm pudding.

—SPJ ST— — Bottle cut down to the appropriate height make unusual vases, pencil-holders, etc. Tie a string around the bottle where you want to cut it, then saturate the string with kerosene and light it with a match. When the flame is out, pour cold water on the bottle.

—SPJST:1PPLE -WALNUT BROWNIES This new recipe makes delicious brownies, crunchy with nuts and sweet with apples.

Apple Walnut Brownies 1/2 cup butter or margarine 2 squares unsweetened chocolate 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 cup sifted cake flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup broken walnut meats 1 cup finely chopped apples 1 teaspoon vanilla Melt butter or margarine and chocolate together over hot water. Beat eggs until light and lemon colored; add sugar gradually while continuing to beat.

Stir in chocolate mixture; beat hard one minute. Mix and sift flour, baking powder and salt; stir in. Stir in nuts, apples and vanilla. Spoon into greased 8-inch square cake pan.

Bake in moderate oven at 350 F. for about 40 minutes, or until done.

Let cool. Cut into squares to serve.

Makes 16 pieces.

-----SPJ ST— PRUNE CAKE's EASY Seven Day prune Cake will keep seven days only if you hide it. For 12 servings, you'll need 1 1/2 cups uncooked prunes, 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, 3/4 cups shortening, 3 beaten eggs, 2 3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour, 1/2 tea spoon salt, 1 teaspoon each mace and cinnamon, 1 1/2 teaspoons soda and 3/4 cup boiling coffee.

Wash prunes and boil in sufficient water to cover, 10 minnutes. Then drain, pit and put through food chopper, using medium knife Cream su-

VES TNII gar and shortening, and beaten eggs and mix. Add flour sifted with salt, spices and 1/2 teaspoon soda, and mix well. Ad coffee in which remaining tea spoon of soda has been dissolevd. Beat well. Pour into well-greased layer cake tins.

Bake in a 375 F. oven for 25 minutes.

Put layers together with butter and sugar icing. `PJST-FRUITED SOUR CR CREAM FREEZE 1 can (1 pound) fruit cocktail 1 package Lemon Dessert Mix 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon lemon juice teaspoon grated lemon rind Drain fruit cocktail, reserving cup syrup. Combine dessert mix and sugar; then prepare as directed on package, using reserved syrup instead of water. If necessary, chill until mixture will mound, about 10 minnutes.

Then blend in sour cream, lemon juice, lemon rind, and fruit cocktail. Reserve some of the fruit for garnish if desired. Spoon into a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

Freze 6 hours or more. Unmould. Garnish with reserved fruit and mint leaves. Let stand 15 minutes before serving. Makes eight to 10 servings.

But did you ever stop to think of why you do these things!

1. How about your Christmas decorations: Know why we kiss under the mistletoe; .. who was first to use holly in December.. . what holly symbolizes to Christians . . . from which country the poinsettia came. . . how the cherry tree figures in Yule lore?

Kissing under the mistletoe is said to have begun with the ancient Romans, who viewed the plant as a symbol of peace. Enemies, meeting under the histletoe, were supposed to embrace and declare a truce. The Romans were also first to use holly — at their December Saturnalia festival. But Christians

13 also find holly appropriate because they see in it the symbolism of Christ's blood (the red berries) and His crown of thorns. The poinsettia, another holi day bloom, comes from Mexico. Joel Poinsett, first American Minister to Mexico, brought it here in 1836. The cherry tree, according to the well-known "Cherry Tree Carol," bent its boughs so that the Virgin Mary could pluck its fruit.

2. Which settlers brought Santa Claus to the New World, and which three men created today's popular image of Santa Claus? Can you name his real-life portotype?

The Dutch brought San Nicolaas (Sinter Klaas for short) to the New World; later his name became Americanized to Santa Claus. Author Washington Irving first described Santa as riding through the skies in a reindeerdrawn sleigh. Clement C. Moore described Santa as fat and jolly, with a snowy beard, in his famous poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Cartoonist Thomas Nast drew him that way.

Santa's prototype, the real St. Nicholas, was a 4th century Turkish bishop who became a legend in his own lifetime for his generosity and his love of children.

3. How did the Christmas toast and wassail bowl begin? Both were started in the same gesture by the daughter of an early Germanic chieftain on a campaign in Britain. Offering a garlanded bowl of wine to her father's princely host, she said "Wass-heil," or "Here's to you." The prince responded gallantly and they soon married.

But is wasn't until the 17th century that people called a toast a toast. The term derived from a quaint English custom of floating a piece of toast in the drink to improve its flavor. A few years later may have seen the first martini toast with the creation of Lamplighter Gin at Bromley-by-Bow. —SPJST-CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD Skiing down a mountain with a lighted torch in your hand. . . strewing hay on the floor of your home. . knocking on neighbors' doors in a symbolic pilgrimage — these are some of the ways you might find yourself celebrating Christmas in other parts of the world.

In token of Christ's birth in a manger, Poles spread hay on the floor and Lithuanians have straw under the tablecloth at their festive Christmas Eve meal. The colorful Mexican posada or pilgrimage dramatizes the search

14 which led Mary and Joseph to the stable. For each of the nine nights before Christmas, a couple dressed as Mary and Joseph goes from house to house. Only at the last house are they — and the parade of neighbors which is now following them —invited in for supper.

An even more novel procession may be seen in the mountains of Austria.

According to researchers for the House of 4711, who have been collecting material on foreign Christmasses, wood carvers in the little town of Oberathmergau meet on Christmas Eve and ski down the mountain slopes with flaming torches in their hands, singing as they go!

Just about every country which celebrates Christmas has its unique bit of seasonal folklore or ritual. In Sweden, it's the feast of St. Lucia on December 13, ushering in the Christmas season. Each community chooses a lovely Lucia Queen to represent the young girl martyred for her religion centuries before in ancient Rome. In families with daughters, the prettiest plays the role of Lucia. Her "privilege" to wait on everyone else for the day!

But even the standard holiday features — Christmas dinner, Christmas presents and Yuletide decorations — have picturesque local variations. Not only does Santa have numerous aliases (he's Julenissen in Denmark, Pere Noel in France ,the Abbot of Unreason in Scotland), but in Italy he is a she.

Italian kids place their trust in Befana, an old woman a broomstick who brings gifts to good dhadren and ashes to bad ones. (In older versions of the legend, she ate the juvenile delinqents).

Americans are probably the champion gift-givers, spending more than $27 billion for Christmas presents in a recent year! The most popular gifts?

For women, probably perfumes and colognes; at least 22 perecnt of the nation's annual perfume sales occur in December. (In round numbers, this means over $7 million in Yuletide fragrances!)

Men's toiletries, too, are Christmas classics — and have been for much longer than you might think. One world-famous European cologne, now sold in the U. S. as well, has appeared in Christmas packages for close to 200 years! Anyone who gave cologne in the 1700's was indeed a well-wisher — for the preparation was popularly

VESTNIK known as "miracle water"! Folks thought it was good for whatever ails you.

Santas of the 1800's took a more practical view, believing that the refreshant cologne was a good substitute for a shower (showers being hard to come by in those days). Today, both unperfumed colognes and masculine scented after-shave lotions are slapped, patted, daubbed and rubbed onto their faces by men in more than 100 different countries. Indeed, with some $500 million a year being spent on men's toiletries, in our country alone, it would seem that the only man who hasn't tried them at one time or another is Santa himself!

But the bearded gent —4 an his counterparts in other countries — are kept so busy, there's no time for shaving, since, in many lands, they must make two trips a season. The French exchange gifts on New Year's Day, but the impatient young fry are visited by Pere Noel on Christmas Eve. While waiting for Befana to come across on January 6, Italian kids and their elders draw small gifts on Christmas Eve from a jar called "the urn of fate."

And leave it to the systematic British to establish December 26 as Boxing Day. On this pugilistic-sounding occasion, servants and tradespeople are remembered with boxes of money: The date of the big Christmas dinner also varies around the world; many countries have it on Christmas Eve, before or after midnight services. Our traditional Christmas turkey does not appear on many menus. The French reveillon, a feast which occurs after midnight mass, is apt to feature oysters and sausages; in the French provinces of Brittany, buckwheat cakes with sour cream are served. The Norwegian Christmas dinner features a fish called lutfisk. At a Polish Christmas Eve dinner, the number of courses is fixed at seven, nine or eleven; a Lithuanian Christmas feast must include twelve courses, one for each of the twelve disciples!

During the Christmas season, Germans and Rumanians bake long, thin cakes that symbolize the Christ Child wrapped in swaddling clothes. In the Ukranian part of Russia, cattle are given the first taste of the Christmas supper, because animals were the first to behold Christ. In parts of rural Germany, this is carried one step further — cattle and their owners both

"Deck the halls with boughs of holly" is a traditional refrain in English and American homes, but in Spain and Italy, householders decorate with flowers instead of evergreens at Christmas time. The Christmas tree, popular throughout the United States and Northern Europe, is relatively rare in Southern Europe; the chreche, or manger scene, usually replaces it. In Sicily, many families use Christmas trees, but they decorate them with oranges instead of tinsel! This carries out an old tradition that all the trees bore fruit when Christ was born.

In England and France, the Yule log is favored; in some districts of England, whole families go to the forest to select their Yule log. Pear, olive and applewood are considered best, and tradition says that the log must be large enough to last until New Year's Day. Perhaps the most unusual Christmas tradition of all is the one still adhered to by some Swiss romantics.

These folk advise a boy or girl to visit nine different fountains and take three sips from each at the time the bells are ringing for midnight services on Christmas Eve. After this odd rite has been completed, the future husband or wife will be found standing at the door of the church and a regular courtship will begin — if the spell has worked.

THE HISTORY OF CHRISTMAS Christmas is described in song as the season to be merry. It's also a season steeped with rich tradition—some of which evolved from customs practiced before the birth of Christ.

The use of greenery at Christmas, for instance, grew out of ancient Roman and Greek customs. Romans made lavish use of green boughs and garlands to honor Saturn, their god of agriculture. Greeks awarded laurel wreaths to victorious athletes.

Holly was a favorite Roman decoration. The Druids of ancient England thought it sacred. Mistletoe was regarded as a charm against evil in Greek mythology. It was a symbol of hope and peace t o the Romans. The Druids believed it had healing powers. The Norse considered it to be sacred and a symbol of love.

It was in heavily-forested northern Europe that the Christmas tree custom

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 was begun by St. Boniface, an eighth century monk. He converted the pagans living in what is now Germany, and ended their homan sacrifices to Odin's sacred oak. He convinced the people instead to adorn fir trees in their homes in tribute to the Christ Child.

Although Christ's birthday was celebrated on various dates as early as the third century, its observance wasn't sanctioned officially until a century later. Until then, Church fathers withheld their blessing because they feared the ocassion would be tied in with pagan festivals.

Finally, to satisfy growing Christian desire, Pope Julius I authorized an investigation to determine Christ's probable birthdate. This led to the selection of Dec. 25. On that date in 353 A. D., the feast of the Nativity was first observed in Rome.

Exchanging Christmas cards is a fairly recent custom. It began in England in the 1840's — the exact date is in dispute. The first sender also is a source of argument. At least four persons, including a 16-year-old artist, are credited with being first.

Christmas cards were introduced in the U. S. by Louis Prang, a German immigrant who settled in Roxburg, Mass.

Known as the "father of the American Christmas card," Prang printed his first one in 1873. By 1881, he was turning out five million yule cards a year.

It was in the 1870's that nostalgic winter scenes by the famed Currier and Ives became highly popular as Christmas cards are perennial best sellers, according to greeting card firms. One business organization alone, sends out 200,000 Currier and Ives Christmas cards each year.

The No. 1 Christmas favorite of children, of course, is jolly, old Santa Claus. The original Santa Claus was St. Nicholas, a fourth century bishop famous in his lifetime for his great generosity, especially to childrea.

Legend has it that St. Nicholas secretly tossed bags of gold into the home of three dowry-less girls when they reached marriageable age. On one of these missions, the bag fell into a stocking hung near the chimmney to dry. And so began the custom of hanging stockings on Christmas Eve. Santa's rosy cheeks, white beard, and portly frame came from the pen of Dr. Clement Moore of New York who immortalized him in his 1822 poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas." This poem starts with the famous line, "T'was the night before Christmas Famed Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast popularized Santa Claus even more in 1863 by picturing him in a bright red, fur-trimmed suit.

The use of poinsettias as Christmas decorations isn't old as customs go.

1 13r. Joel Poinsettt of Charleston, S. C., after whom the flower is named, introduced the plant to the U.S. in 1828.

In Mexico and Central America, where the flower apparently originated, it was known as the "Flower of the Holy Night."

One of the most revered Christmas customs is the re-enactment of Christ's birth with a creche, or crib scene. Although started several hundred years earlier, the custom wasn't popularized until the 13th century by St. Francis of Assissi.

At that time, there were few books available and most people couldn't read anyway. To give an understanding portrayal o f Christmas, St. Francis dramatized the Nativity in 1224 at Greccio, Italy.

Villagers took the parts of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. Live animals were used. A life-sized wax figure of the Christ Child was placed in the manger. The living crechce attracted large crowds from nearby and distant areas.

And, as the pilgrims stood about admiring the scene, St. Francis led them in joyous songs written in the vernacular. Thus was born another great and popular custom—Christmas caroling.

FOOD FADS , WASTE MONEY AND THREATEN HEALTH, NUTRITION FOUNDATION WARNS Food fads waste your money and they can undermine your health too.

The best protection against diet fads which can flatten your purse and threaten your health lies in eating a well-balanced diet of ordinary foods each day, the Nutrition Foundation reports. The Foundation was established in 1941 as a non-profit organization to support scientific research and public education in nutrition. The Foundation's supporting members are companies in the food and allied industries.

The news about a fad diet spreads rapidly by word of mouth or through magazines and newspaper articles. The urge to try it seems irresistible aistible to people who learn of a new

The so-called "Air Force" or "Drinking Man's" diet — which cuts the carbohydrates you cat to a minimum — seems to be the latest fad. Those who .follow it shun high carbohydrate foods such as bread, potatoes and spaghetti — the energy-gi y iiny foods that make up one of the major components of a good diet. They eat high protein fiods .such as meat and consume fat foods like olives and avocados. Proteins and fats arc good foods but they do not, alone, constitute a balanced diet, without carbohydrate. A "low carbohydrate" diet may mean that a person eats less, but it can place a severe load on the body's waste-disposing mechanisms, particularly the liver and the addneys. The low-carbohydrate diet may cause a temporary weight loss, but it is a diet you cannot stick to over a long period of time with satisfaction or even without hazard to your health, the Foundation warns. So weight loss is temporary at best.

Food fads come and food fads go.

W e hear of a new one almost as soon as the last one goes out of favor. Usually the food fad requires special health foods which are supposed to be better than the foods sold in your local grocery stores or supermarkets. The socalled natural foods cost more, but they do not furnish any better nutrition than ordinary foods, regardless of the claims.

Promises of living longer, of youth, charm and wisdom by eating special foods do not stand up under examination. People often fall for the claims osuf rdrnagic potions, no matter how abFood faddists claim, further, that ordinary foods from the supermarket are no good because American farm soil is "depleted." That the food grown on it is inferior, and that commercial processing further destroys nutritive values.

Both notions are wrong, the Foundation emphasizes. Modern agricultural methods and modern food processing together means a food supply giving good variety and fine nutritional value.

We have plenty of food, too, thanks to fertilizers and soil treatments.

The false notions and half-truths spread by the food faddists are usually

VSTNfE intended to sell something. Many fad products wil not hurt you, but they lack the magical power to do what the salesmen pretend they can do. Faddists have sold bottled sea water for as much as $3.50 a gallon to those who were taken in by their claims. The FDA stopped that racket, but other rackets keep popping up to rob those who are not cautious.

A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of foods from each of the four main food groups: carbohydrates and other nutrients from bread and 'cereals; protein from meat, fish or eggs; vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables; and the all-round nutrients from milk. By eating food from each of these four groups every day, you consume a balanced diet.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES. PUSH APPLIANCES COSTS HIGHER The cost of major household appliances has been decreasing since 1960.

But since many consumers are demanding new features, we are now paying more per appliance, says Mrs. Elsie P. Short, E5ctension home management specialist at Texas A&M University.

There, are more consumers buying appliances now than ever before. A larger proportion of the population consists of young people who marry and begin their life as a separate family unit.

Increased wages and, the'reduction of excise taxes have added additional spending money to the family income.

The influence of goals and expectations in daily livin,g is another important factor for the increase in consumption of major appliances.

Older families sometimes replace outmoded equipment long before that equipment is worn out. During 1964, 50 to 65 per cent of refrigerator, range, washer and black and white television sales were for replacement purposec.

As young people establish homes of their own, they include many kinds of convenience equipment that were once thought of as luxuries or were not even in existence a few years ;ago, It is not surprising that the production and sales departments are optimistic, says Mrs. Short. A recent survey of engaged university girls in Maryland listed products they expected to have in their first home. The results show the following percentages, based on the proportion of the total group surveyed: Kitchen range, 92 per cent; clock radio, 80 per cent; refrigerator, 78 per

cent; television set, 71 per cent; clothes washer, 62 per cent; clothes dryer, 45 per cent; room air conditioner, 42 per cent; freezer, 28 per cent; dishwasher, 26 per cent.

RESEARCHER EXPLAINS MEANING OF HETEROSIs (HYBRID VIGOR) "Hybrid vigor, or heterosis are terms generally considered synonymous in animal breeding," explains Walter Kruse, who heads up beef cattle research at Texas A&M University's Livestock and Forage Research Center near McGregor. What heterosis or hybrid vigor means is simply "an increased capacity of growth found in crosses between unrelated strains."

Early work at the McGregor Center and other A&M field units show that weaning weight of first-cross calves average 6 per cent more than either purbred parent. And when crossbred dams are mated with purebred bulls, the advantage jumps to nearly 19 per cent.

"Heterosis usually shows itself in traits low in heritability, such as mothering ability, fertility, general vigor, and mature size," said Kruse. Feed lot gain and carcass and meat characteristics are hig in heritability and present evidence is that heterosis has little effect on these characteristics. This indicates that traits which can be improved by straight selection within the breeds show the least improvement by crossbreeding.

Hybrid Vigor in Plants Hybrid vigor has shown itself in many plants during the last two hundred years, but the concept was probably first definitely recognized with hybrid corn. Close behind came work with hybrid vigor in sorghum breeding and to some extent in poultry. The -use of heterosis in practical plant and poultry breeding has surpassed, in most cases, the early predictions and accounts for the profitable and widespread use of hybrids in crops and poultry.

The succes of hybrid vigor in other fields has caused beef cattle producers to develop an interest in its advantages and disadvantages. Producers must remember at the outset, however, that the words heterosis or hybrid vigor are pot magic, nor are they criminal, notes Kruse. To be effective, before a crossbreeding program is begun, a definite plan to fit management and time available should be outlined.

All schemes of crossing will not produce the same results. In cattle, it appearS that wider outcrosses produce

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 more hybrid vigor, but just as each breed has sertain characteristics they may be more desirable under certain conditions, so has each cross.

There Are Problems, Too There are several problems associated with crossbred cattle that will require each producer to make his own decision on a breeding program. The one problem of marketing may be the greatest, notes Kruse. Crossbred feeder calves and even slaughter cattle are not always accepted on the market the same as purebreds.

Buying purebred bulls of more than one breed may be invonvenient, is a second problem.

Replacement females may be another problem unless a system of rotation is possible. This problem is minor in poultry or in hybrid corn, since the individual hen or kernel is of much less Value than an individual cow or bull.

In summary, explains Kruse, for crossbreeding to be of value, the performance of the cross must be better than the performance of either of the original parent breeds. Other ideas that may be folowed include using straight selection as long as improvement ic being made, and when and if, a decision is made to start crossing, using unrelated strains for greater advantage. All bulls should be purebred and females pure or crossbred. The last general recommendation includes using only the best performance tested parental stock available.

THE FAMILY LAWYER Movies in the Courtroom The jurors were duly impressed when the attractive young plaintiff described the leg injuries she had suffered in an auto accident. She was so crippled, she said, that she was forced to wear low heeled shoes at all times.

In short order, the opposing attorney called for the courtroom to be darkened for a movie. Taken secretly, the movie neatly punctured the plaintiff's claim by showing her arriving at a party â&#x20AC;&#x201D; wearing extra-high heels.

Courtroom movies have found their greatest use in deflating. injury claims that are either false or exaggerated.

However, they have also proved useful in establishing claims that are valid â&#x20AC;&#x201D; for instance, by clarifying the conditions that led to an accident, or by demonstrating the efects of an injury.

In fact, movies are so revealing that, though offered by one side of a lawsuit, they may aid the other side even more.

For example, in disputing the claim

Wednesday, December 22, 1965 of an injured bay, the defense showed movies of him playing baseball to domonstrate that he was still able to take part in sports. But the movies also showed, more poignantly than words, the handicaps he did suffer in chasing fly balls and running bases.

Of course, the law's concern is not which side is helped but whether justice is served. There is real danger in the very fact that movies are so persuasive, for they may influence a jury beyond fair limits.

With that danger in mind, the law insists on careful conformity to the rules of evidence. Authenticity and accuracy of the films must be proven.

Relevance to the issues must be established. The trial judge may, at his discretion, rule out films that don't meet these tests.

In one case, a film of a stretch of highway was offered to show that the injured pedestrian should have been able to see the oncoming car.

However, it turned out that the picture was made in the wintertime, when intervening trees were bare of foliage.

Since the accident happened in the

summertime, when the trees were in full bloom, the film was excluded by the judge.

But with legal safeguards, movies have an important role to play in the courtroom. Like many other scientific developments, they open new paths in the law's search for truth.

Jeliko g jsem Ceti ve Vestniku Vytopiltiv dopis, mangelka rozhodla, jestli bude pekne poeasi tak, ze inne zavaze do vYrooni schtize. Po tech osm rokti, co jsem vzdalen od Ennis toto je prvni vYroeni schilze, ktere jsem mohi bYti picitomen.. Z domova jsme vyjeli v 10 hodin a do sokolovny jsme pkijeli pied dva.nactou, prave na obed a pied zahajenim schaze. °bed byl yelice chutny tak jsme si dobte pochutnali. Dekujem tadu a zvla gte kucha.tkam, ktere ho ptipravily! Po obede br. Vytopil zahajil schtizi, kde nas zvlagt ptivital, ze jsme tak z daleka ptijeli do schtize. A ja — nevdeenik ho pomohl zbavit atadu pro ptigti rok. Vite bratti, je to tak, kdy g jsem pkistoupil k tadu C. 135 tak br. Vytopil zastaval Mad tajemnika po mnoho let mg zbohatnul a jako piedseda ji g to nemusi honit.

Pracoval jsem skoro dva roky na sta novach nove jednoty a slotrZil co jeji hlavni piedseda etyti roky. Hned na druhY den po zalokni nove Jednoty meli jsme tti eekatele za tajemniky Hlavniho ta.du, a na piimluvu a odporueeni Augusta Haidugka, zvolili jsme Jana Kubenu za hlavniho tajemnika, kterfato titad zastaval a2 do sve smrti.

FREN gTATSKE LIDOVE BETLEMY Obyeej stavet o vanocich betlem je na Valagsku a v Pobeskydi stargi rozsvecovat vanoeni stromky.
