FROM THE DITOR S DESK A NEW RECORD This has been a good year for the SPJST, indeed, a banner year. Our gain in new insurance and in new members has been progressing at an increasing rate — so much so that we have set a NEW RECORD during 1964! Up to November 1st we acquired more than 5 million in new insurance and 2,263 new members! That is something no one would have ever dreamed of a few years back, when three million dollars of new insurance was considered a fantastic figure. • • This new record shows that our organizers have been busier than ever, and that ALL of us have cooperated better to achieve this new production record. Vice President Hejny has high hopes that we may even cross the sixmillion mark by the first of the new year. Wouldn't that really be something .) , Who would have thought it 10, 20, or 30 years ago? •
Of the total production, the organizers of District V have sold over onehalf so far this 'year. They have set a fine example. If the figure of six million is to be reached, everyone must put forth that last ounce of effort toward that end, in every district, in every lodge. More power to them, and good luck! • • The nation, on the whole, is enjoying Very prosperous and steady economic
THOUGHTS One must be poor to know the luxury of giving. • • A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives the rose. • • Let no pleasure tempt thee, no profit allure thee, no ambition corrupt thee, to do anything which thou knowest to be evil; so shall thou always live jollily, for a good conscience is a continual Christmas. —Benjamin Franklin gains, creating a general healthy economic climate for all businesses, including life insurance. All these factors contribute to the growth. of the SPJST. It goes without saying that the SPJST offers a wide selection of insurance policies, with coverage to fit every purpose and situation. All are fully covered by properly invested reserves and legal requirements. The SPJST is an institution that is "bigger" than any individual; it will outlive us all, and its future is secure. In a sense, it is as permanent as the Rock of Gibraltar (pardon me!) and like the government of this great nation itself. Presidents of the nation have passed on, but the machinery of government has continued uninterrupted, without chaos and anarchy. No other life insurance company can offer you sounder, better life insurance coverage at the cheapest possible rates, than the
SPJST. See that your friends know about us. Ask them to join. Acquaint them with the facts about the SPJST, who and what we are. • Human nature being what it is, people sometimes dislike each other, either mutually, or from only the one side. Oftentimes such dislike is based on suspicion, lack of confidence, mistrust, and jealousy, none of it justifiable. There is little brotherhood and fraternalism in such an association. Instead of going to the heart of the matter, personalities are involved. Instead of harmony and harmonious achievement, there is divisive action and stalemate. Such people get a thrill at seeing the other fellow's projects fall through. Instead of hands laid heavy on the wheel of progress, hands are stuck in pockets with an air of indifference. Jealousy is certainly one of man's worst vices; it is the brake applied to the wheels of progress. Those peoples' motto seems to be, "I wasn't able to do it and neither can you! And heaven help you if you happen to succeed where I failed!" Let us therefore resolve, as the new year approaches, to cast aside these human weaknesses and bad traits. Let us recall the difficult and trying times of our forefathers who had to band together in face of extreme adversities, who planted the deep roots of brotherhood and benevolence. We must deal with one another on that basis, lest the

DALLAS CZECH SCHOOL FOR 1966
The Czech School Committee met recently and it was agreed to hold Czech classes each Wednesday, beginning January 12, 1966, at the Sokol Athletic Center, 7448 Greenville Ave. from 7 to ' 9 p.m. The tuition is $5 for a ten-week course. "Progressive Czech" will be used, and can be purchased for $3.50 at the school. The teacher will be Mrs. Josie Kankrlik. If interested please contact her at DA 7-0772. Newsbriefs Edwin Maly, 65, passed away in Taylor on Nov. 22nd. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery. Brother Maly was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 29, Taylor. John Galetka, 82, passed away in Hallettsville on Nov. 22nd. Brother Galetka was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville. • Joe .Holubec, 80, passed away in Taylor on Nov. 22nd. Brother Holubec was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 38, Kovar. • • Frank Bobalik, 78, passed away Ennis on Nov. 26th. Brother Bona was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 11,) Kaufman. Burial was in the Kaufman City Cemetery. David L. Blinka, 36, passed away in El Campo on Nov. 28th. Brother Blinka was a member of Lodge No. 40, Hillje.
Features SISTER MIKESKA RECEIVES ENDOWMENT VOUCHER It is rare that human beings live to the ripe and grand old age of 96. If that person is a member of the SPJST, he or she receives a cash endowed voucher. Up until recently there have been only 10 people in the SPJST who have received endowed vouchers. Sister Anna. Mikeska, who turned 96 on Oct. 8th, was the 11th. She was recently awarded her voucher by Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek and Supreme Lodge Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky. Her sons and daughters gathered together to pay tribute to their beloved mother on her birthday. Sister Anna Mikeska and her husband, George, joined the SPJST and Lodge No. 30, Taiton on June 12th, 1904. They later transferred to Lodge No. 68, Nelsonville when that lodge was organized. Anna (Susen) Mikeska was born in Nelsonville on Oct. 8th, 1869. She was married to George Mikeska in 1887. Their first three years were spent as renters on a farm near Nelsonville. Shortly after that they bought a small three-acre farm, sold it later and bought a larger 100-acre farm. In 1900 they bought 300 acres in Fort Bend County at $11.25 an acre. They built a house on the property but never moved there. They had a renter living

on the place by the name of Joe Polad. A storm later blew most of the buildings away. They went to work, felled trees, took them to the saw mill and used the lumber to build again. 'F_-"he recalls that mosquitoes were so bad at the time they had to keep fires going all night lon g to ward off the swarms. They sold the land in Ft. Bend County and bought acreage near Nelsonville, making a total of 570 acres there. Sister Mikeska had three sisters: Rosie Holik of Sunnyside, Theresa Mikeska of Nelsonville, Lucy Ruch of San Antonio. All are deceased. Two brothers, Joe and Frank Susen, are both deceased. Another brother, John Susen, lives in Sealy, and a step-brother, Willie Kamas, lives in Rosenberg; a half sister, Mary Sahupak, lives in Houston. George Mikeska was born in Zadverice, Czechoslovakia. He passed away in 1950 at the age of 85. They lived a happy life together. Eleven children were born to the union; three died in infancy, and John, the oldest, died at the age of 65. There was Frank of Wallis, Lidge of Freeport, Joe of Katy, George Jr., and Jerry J. of Nelsonville. The two daughters are Mrs. John Chernosky and Mrs. Rudy Janosky of Bellville. The family had very little sickness. Anna Mikeska attended the Bradbury school at Bleiblerville, and belongs to the Nelsonville Czech Brethren Church. The entire SPJST wishes Sister Mikeska a very "happy birthday." and sincerely hopes that she is with us to enjoy many, many more. (Information courtesy Mrs, Rudy Janosky, Bellville).

IOWMAN KRUSE, APPOINTED GRAND OFFICER IN EASTERN STAR
Brother Lowman C. Kruse. Past Worthy Patron of Bluebell Chapter No. 855, Order of the Eastern Star, was recently appointed to serve as a Grand Officer on the Arrangements Committee of District 4, Sestion 5, OFS, by Worthy Grand Matron, Mrs. Edna Earl Duke. Brother Kruse was installed with the other Grand Officers at the 84th installation of officers of the Grand Chapter of Texas, OEIS, on Oct. 28th, in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in Fort Worth. Brother Kruse will be honored and receive special recognition on Dec. 14th, at Bluebell Chapter No. 865, 3210 Hillcroft Road, Houston, at 8 p.m. Borther Kruse is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, where he serves on the Board of Directors.

This movie has been shown on TV and is recommended for all ages. The title is "The Spirit of Christmas." After the movie, Santa Claus is scheduled to arrive to talk to all the children. He will have a very nice gift for each child. Refreshments of sandwiches, potato chips, dips, cakes, pies and cookies will be served. Each family is asked to bring one plate of any of the above mentioned foods. Make plans now to attend and join in the fun. The flowers have been in full bloom and everything looks just beautiful! I am a little late to thank everyone for the donations and help everyone who contributed for the parties we had. If it weren't for all the parents we couldn't have such a wonderful time. The children enjoyed it very much. I'd like to thank Brother Nick Morris and his lovely wife and children for coming to the party. We enjoyed them very much. We had 59 children at the hot dog supper. We played some games. There Were so many prizes won. We didn't get everyone's name, so we will not list them for fear we might miss someone. We now have a beautiful picture of our duchess, Carolyn Mynar and Duke Raymond Hromadka.; the picture was donated by Brother and Sister Raymond and Lillie Hromadka and Frank and Denal Mynar. Many thanks! The pictures of the dancers will be ready before long; hope to have them up in the hall before long. It's the time of the year to thank our cake baker Mary Lander for the birthday cake she has made and decorated for the Junior Youth Club every month. Sister Emilie Vochoska used to bake them for us, until her husband got hurt. Many thanks to both, of you! These sausages are made in our kitchen early Sunday morning so as to be ready for pick up by 1 or 2 p.m. We have had a large demand for these sausages; therefore, we urge you to call in your orders early so that you can be assured a purchase. We always make more sausages than we have orders; however, on every sale day we have customers who want more or didn't order in time and are disappointed when the demand exceeds the supply. These are liver sausages as made on the farm by all our Czech families, Premium meats are used with the same recipe that has been so popular at Sokol Houston for the past 10 years. Our turkey dinner was a most successful affair. However, we want to apologize to those who didn't get turkey dinners. We never anticipated such a large crowd since Houston had its share of turkey dinners at numerous
VESTNtK places. In one hour we sold more turkey than we had anticipated selling in half a day; but we had a Po p ular substitute of delicious sausages after the turkey dinners were sold out. Next year we will not run out because we know how popular this menu is and we will be ready for any crowd. I wish to thank all the members and especially our friends who helped make this the most profitable affair this year. Our building fund is progressing successfully and a chairman has been selected to head the committee for solicitation of funds. This is our faithful member Judy Sindel who has been a big spark in the drive to get funds to finance our new gym. We have onehalf of our goal nearly completed and if we have as good a response in December as in November, the building could be built sooner than expected. We know that December will be a difficult month for collection of funds due to the season holidays and all the activities, but the Slavonic people are not greatly affected financially due to seasonal holidays since they are prone to always have something in reserve for a worthwhile cause. Dear Members, We held our last monthly meeting 'Slunday, Nov. 21st, and we had a nice attendance; however, there were a ,few who were out of town and we missed all of you quite a bit. We were honored with two visitors and were very pleased to have them: Mr. and Mrs. Jaresh from Ennis honored us with their presence. We certainly enjoyed their company and hope they come back a gain soon. There was quite a lot of business to be discussed with the year coming to an abrupt end and the new one just around the corner. The next meeting will be in December and this is our annual election of officers so there was much talk and planning ahead due to this. After the meeting everyone rushed toward the kitchen. Since this was only a few days before Thanksgiving Bro. and Sister Raymond and Faye Rejcek were in charge of the Sunday night supper and they prepared a delicious turkey and dressing supper, with all the trimmings. The meal was really delicious and
7 made everyone full as though they were celebrating their Thanksgiving dinner early. After this everyone settled down to a grand evening of a family social and fun night. The next meeting will also be our annual Christmas party for young and old, so you members come out — all of you, at least to this meeting if for no other reason than just to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and enjoy a good evening with old and new friends. There will also be a short program, and of course, for you little and big ones dear old Santa certainly will be sure to make an appearance with all his goodies so you see you really can't miss being there. There will be more details in the next issue of this paper, so be sure to watch for it. By the way, our meeting will be an hour earlier, that is, at 3 p.m. instead of the usual 4 p.m., due to the Christmas program. Members of the Youth Club led the Pledge of Allegiance. New members are Nelda Marie Blackburn, and Kelly Dawn Branch. A discussion of our charity project was brought up and sister Norma Pavelka is chairman. Her helpers are Sister Ruby Pavelka and Sister Gloria Favelka. They will again distribute baskets of groceries in our community. We again remind the members of Lodge 35 about our Christmas party. We are writing Santa Claus at the North Pole to please be on hand. The hall, now that it is nearing completion, is very beautiful and definitely modern. It is very nice and is something for us `to take pride in. An additional two hundred chairs 1-an/e been added and there is more dancing space —plus plenty of visiting space ;Special thanks should go to a number of guys who did a lot of work and running around to start the ball rolling. Dear Friends, As you probably have noticed in the Vestnik, several clubs have charitable projects for Christmas. What are you doing? Christmas is a time of giving. It all started back when God gave Christ to us when we were in need. Today, there are many in need, and what bet; ter way could we get the true spirit of Christmas? It is very rewarding to give where it is needed. Think of all the wonderful things we have and take for granted. Consider getting the true spirit of giving, Christmas and fraternalism. Are there any families in need in your lodge, in your community? Don't forget our Rest Home in Taylor, orphanages, plus other community organizations. ATTENTION YOUTH LEADERS: I have come across some material which I feel may be helpful to you. We have a supply of booklets for programs. They contain poems, songs, dances, games, skits, and other ideas which may prove of great help to you when planning time comes around. The booklets deal with such holidays as: Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. Some of the above topics are limited in quantity and to my regret, they must be sent on a first-comefirst-served basis. I will, however, be happy to cooperate and send, upon your reuest, whatever I can. Also for your information, there is available the Manual of Guidance for Youth Directors, which is full of ideas, suggestions, and other aids. This booklet is invaluable in your work with our youth. So to any of y ou who do not have this yellow-covered booklet, I will send it upon request. We also have a limited number of booklets on camping. Another useful booklet that we have is "Know Your Flag", a book containing information about our United States Flag and the proper way of displaying 14, under different circumstances. There is no doubt that the booklet is helpful and might avoid some embarrassing situations.

Boy, did we have some fun! We saw only one deer, but he was too far away to shoot. Daddy said we made too much niose by laughing. Eighty years ago a horrible wildlife slaughter blemished American history, and because of this act, Indians justifiably coined the derogatory phrase, "What the white man touches he destroys!" Once the bison, popularly known as buffalo, roamed most of North America and were content in all bat tropical and rugged mountain areas. In 1521, Cortez and his adventurous band found animals deep in Mexico "with the hump of a camel and the hair of a lion." Others were found on the Potomac River in 1621, but the Great Plains, extending from the Colorado River in Texas northward into Canada was the buffalo's best suited range. Four great herds, estimated by early settlers at several million animals per herd, thrived for centuries throughout thiS wide belt of prairie with only slight harassment from predators, including the Indian with his flinttipped spear. Prior to the introduction of horses on the Great Plains, Indians killed buffalo by driving them off cliffs, ambushing them at waterholes, or ringing them with fire. The value of the buffalo to the plains Indians was not only in providing food, but they derived shelter, clothing, weapons, tools of various sorts, bedding, robes, glue, cosmetics, fuel, and drink from this wandering animal. Many cultures were so dependent upon the bison that a shift in the location of the herd could mean disaSter for a whole tribe. Grass was always abundant somewhere in the 400-500 mile home range of the separate herds. Prior to 1850 disease was apparently absent and the buffalo was remarkably adept at "getting by." A broken leg, or a near fatal Wound, healed quickly and only the very old or the weak fell prey to wolves. Hardy though they were, only stubharness did often cause the death of large numbers. These would sometimes march blindly without goad cause from ,good range to bad, from well watered pastures to dry and into blind canyons and certain death. Agility, speed and endurance usually kept the animals safe from Indian hunters who, as interested in sport as in results, preferred to hunt buffalo on open ground with yells and wild spirited chase. By contrast,' white hide
hunters, with results definitely in mind, approached silently on foot during howling blizzards or sandstorms and delivered a withering fire into the herd of bewildered buffalo who never before had faced a, silent, deadly foe who had no rules of fair play. Following the Civil War, unemployment sent thousands of adventurers -t into the buffalo rang, and from 11; /0-1875 a hide industry, conceived by men in pursuit of several goals, was burn to cure the ills of a nation: 1) 'the . , ,;,rket for tough buffalO hides i • ;-.•aising in the United States :;g oad; 2) Indians were still fighting for their' just heritage and destructiciYi of their traveling food supply walla end their resistance; 3) Railroads, near bankruptcy following the Civil War, were eager to haul supplies to the frontier and return with valuable hide cargos; and 4) Leather fact-ales and related industries would flourish and help solve unemployment problems in the East. Everyone had an opportunity to benefit from such a plan so almost everyone was in hearty agreement. Slaughtering 15 to 20 million buffalo seemed expedient, with so much to be gained. Profits were high in almost any part of the buffalo trade, but they were not always reaped by the individual hide hunter. Supplies on the frontier were much too expensive for the average settler with few resources. A list of supplies purchased by one hide hunter for a winter hunt in Montana included 2 buffalo skinners at $50 per month, 2 freight wagons, 2 saddle horses, 3 Sharps rifles (one 40-90, one 45-75, one 45-120. Each at $150 to $200 without telescope), 550 pounds of lead, 4 sheets of patch paper, 3 butcher steels, a cook at $50 per month, 2 teams plus harness, 2 wall tents, 50 pounds of gunpowder, 4,500 primers, 600 brass shells, 60 Wilson skinning knives, and a supply of staple groceries. Total cost hit more than $1,400.00. Other more elaborate hunting caravans cost $8,000 to $10.000 for equipment and supplies during the height of the slaughter. Since ordinary buffalo hides sold for $1.50 to 3.00 each on the frontier, a hunter investing $10,000 in equipment would expect to kill 4,000 to 5,000 animals per season if rich profits were to be made from the dirty; dangerous work. Hide values fluctuated depending on demand and in the early 1870's it was high. Saddles, buggy tops, sleigh bodies,

British troops in the Crimea even marched on buffalo soles, and shaggy buffalo hair around the head and horns sold for 75 cents a pound for upholstery stuffing. A firearm industry flourished anew when the Sharps Rifle Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, began making buffalo rifles advertised as capable of firing eight shots a minute and throwing a 50-caliber ball five miles. Indians called these big 56's "A shoot today — kill torommow." Kills a mile away were not uncommon with such rifles. Despite the high cost of outfitting, thousands of hide hunters, novices during summer and frofessionals in the winter, chose one of the four major herds in the Great Plains as their target of profit. There are no accurate records of which herd drew the most hunters, but the Republican herd near Nebraska, the Arkansas herd around Kansas and the Texas herd apparently had equal hunting pressure exerted on them from 1870 to 1875. Soon, state legislatures in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska passed laws prohibiting the total extermination of their once magnificent herds. When this occurred hunters from the North rushed to Texas. A similar move to save the buffalo in Texas was afoot in 1875 when General Phil Sheridan made his infamous speech of opposition on the floor of the Texas Legislature: "These men have done more in the last two years, and will do more in the next, to settle the vexed Indian question than the entire regular army has done in the last 30 years," Sheridan said. "They are destroying the Indian's commissary; and it is a well-known fact that an army losing its base of supplies is placed at a great disadvantage. Send them powder and lead, if you will, but; for the sake of a. lasting peace, let them kill, skin and sell until the buffalo are exterminated!" Concerted and realistic action by business and civic groups, news media, police, and the general public is needed to halt this costly public burden. Mr. Hunter, whether your luck pinpointed a trophy buck or a spike, the animal means something to wildlife management people. That is, Sir, the harvesting of that creature is a vital factor in planning for future seasons. So, make certain that it goes into the record. Or, if and when the man who leased you the hunting rights asks for the vital statistics, be a patriotic hunter and cooperate. The land owner who charges for the use of his acreage for hunting is required by statute to maintain an official record to be turned in to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department by May 1 each year. Therefore, 'you may be asked for your name, address, hunting license number, and the amount of game taken daily. This also applies to land owners who accommodate water fowl and small game hunters. The land owner is increasingly aware of this, according to the department, as reflected in the increasing number obtaining the $5 shooting preserve license, which after all, is required by state law. The shooting preserve license is available from county clerks, game wardens, as well as from district and regional offices, and department headquarters, John H. Reagan Building, Austin, 78701.
16 MAKE. PLANS NOW FOR HOLIDAY VISITORS Will you have small children visiting you this Christmas? Better check and see if your home is safe for them, advises Mrs. Patsy R. Yates, Texas A&M University EXtension specialist in family life education. For example, have you put matches and household poisons out of reach? Are the aerosol spray cans safely stashed away — in a locked container out of reach of the small fry? Wliat about aspirins and other medicines? These, too, should be kept away from small children. Paints, detergents, alcohol and household bleaches are potential hazards for small children who are exploring a strange house. Store these where little hands can't find them. Scissors, pins and plastic bags should be added to the list of hazards. Christmas trees with ornamentals that break or candles that flame attract small children. An adult should supervise a child playing around a tree, or the room should be closed so small children cannot enter when adults are not there to supervise. If older people will be among your house guests this holiday season, consider safety features for their rooms. You may save them a nasty fall if you arrange the rooms so that they can reach a light from the bed. Keep a night light on in the bathroom or hallway. Plan your holiday baking, shopping and gift wrapping so that you won't be hurried at the last minute. Falls, cuts and burns are the most frequent injuries received at home. All of these are more apt to occur if you are tired or in a hurry. Mrs. Yates recommends that you allow ample time for each task you are doing — in order to have an accident-free holiday. —SPJSTLANDOWNER-HUNTER RELATIONS CAN BE IMPROVED This year more than 200,000 deer will be killed on private lands in Texas and based on 19041 records, landowners will receive approximately $12 million for leasing hunting and fishing rights. Wallace G. Klussmann, Extension specialist in wildlife conservation at Texas A&M University, encourages hunters to consider some basic relations with the landowner to avoid friction for not only this but future seasons. The hunter should realize that it costs money to produce game or fish and therefore should, be appreciative
ITtSTNiR of the part the landowner has had in providing the game. The sportsman should develop a written lease with the landowner to include such things as rate and date of payment; time limits or duration of lease; boundaries of the lease area; the kind of game or fish included; names of individuals or families in the lease; guest privileges; associated activities such as fishing, camping, picnicking, etc.; and the use andmaintenance of any cabin or shelter included in the lease. Showing respect for the owner's property is one way to lessen friction. Leaving gates just as they are found and asking about the location and type of livestock in the leased area will improve the hunter-landowner relation. Wounded game should be followed and the landowner's suggestions, if wounded game crosses a fence, should be obeyed. It is best to avoid hunting near boundary or fence lines. The hunter should know his gun and ammunition and have the gun "sighted in" at all times. Use gun and ammunition that is adequate for the purpose. Always make sure of the target and background — that it is legal game and not domestic livestock or another hunter. Klussmann encourages hunters to obey all game and fish laws and to keep the place you camp and hunt clean at all times. Finally, getting to know the landowner and respecting his wishes are essential to the best hunter-landowner relationship, concludes Klussmann. SPJST----

It's time to get down to business — and here's a check list that may help you plan your activities: Plan carefully for your Christmas shopping and gift-giving — and budget your time and funds accordingly. SLUG HELD PERIL TO HUNTERS Carrying power of an ordinary big game rifle has been demonstrated tragically during the new big game season, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. One definite case of a non-hunter being hit and badly hurt by a stray bullet was reported. Another shooting, with possibily similar circumstances was being investigated', game wardens reported to the department headquarters. A farmer near Dripping Springs was felled by a bullet, apparently from a hunter's gun miles away, while the farmer was repairing his barn roof. The missile struck an arm and traveled downward into his body and was safely extracted. He is recovering. Investigators said deer hunters were in the general area, so many in fact that it was considered useless to try to trace the gun that fired the shot. They surmised the person using the gun did not know that a bullet had hit the man. Another major incident involved a 21-year-old youth hunting from a tree blind. He was found dead near the tree, after sustaining a chest wound. But the fatal circumstances had not been determined. It was pointed out that a few years ago a hunter was shot and killed while perched in a tree by a gunner who told authorities he mistook the man for a wild turkey. Department field men acknowledged there are definite hazards afield from stray bullets. STRAY

The deadly criminal is carbon monoxide (CO) a colorless, orodless, tasteless gas produced every time a carboncontaining material burns, says a new leaflet from the American Medical Association. CO combines with blood 200 times more easily than oxygen. If you breathe air containing a normal amount of oxygen and a moderate amount of carbon monoxide, your blood will be starved for oxygen. When blood cannot supply oxygen to your brain, permanent brain damage or death may result. Dangerous quantities of CO usually accumulate when a cool, slow fire burns in limited air. Since your can't see, smell or taste it, the gas is hard to detect except by the symptoms — drousiness, headache, tightness across the forehead, confusion, nausea, and muscular weakness. CO poisoning may confuse you so that you cannot reach fresh air to relieve the symptoms and prevent serious injury. To prevent a carbon monoxide attack in your home followe these rules'. —Have all heating systems checked annually for operating efficiency. Make sure that vents, pipes, flues and chimneys are tight. —Make certain that your heating

The items touched on concern some of the most often-made mistakes by some of our Czech correspondents. Proto, yerime, ie to stoji za, opakovani. Use of capital letters: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1965. Veera byla streda, 14. Cervence 1965. Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is names of person, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations), titles of books, films, etc. take capitals: Ex.: Karel Dvoi-ak, Wilsonovo nadraii, Dunaj, Anglican, Cechy, Sinetanova opera, "Prodana nevesta", etc., and NaS'e •hnsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika, slovanska, podporujici jednota. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech. Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE — FORMAL usage are capitalized, as are those of the FAMLIAR — INFORMAL usage: Vy, Wig ; Ty Tviij, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is

capitalized only when referring to one Person. If you are referring to a group (plural), the pronouns are not capitalized. A common error made by many Czechs in this ariea is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vim, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pracuj a tie se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks.
