From The AN AMERICAN TRADITION I am thankful that I have eyes to behold the autumnal beauty of our glorious countryside. I am thankful that I can listen to the sounds of nature, and grateful for the limbs that make it possible to move about and enjoy these miracles of Nature, thankful for being with my loved ones; thankful that I may move about in this great wonderful free country of ours; grateful to those countrymen who are dying to continue making it so; thankful for all God's graces and blessings, for all the riches that abound and surround us.

For these things I am thankful this Thanksgiving Day, 1965. Your editor, officers of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, and the Publishers sincerely hope that your Thanksgiving Day will be a joyous one — a happy one, spent with those whose company you cherish most. Let us give thanks for all this and the many other things we tend to take for granted in this Land of Plenty.

Just for a moment, and while we're speaking of plenty, let us examine the plight of the American farmer, who is largely responsible for this bountiful production.

There are 20 million more mouths to feed in the U.S. than there were in 1957. If farmers hadn't upped their yields through improved farming methods (better and more efficient machinery, fertilizer, etc.), this nation and the world would be in a pretty fix. Americans, most of whom are now urban dwellers, are likely to discount the importance of farmers, even to ignore them. As long as we do have food to eat and clothes to wear and our pocketbooks reasoruibly filled, we tend to care less about the farmer and his situation. One writer points out that this is a terrible mistake, and that it is economically unsound and politically dangerous. The president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, Charles D. Shuman, stated recently that "anything that affects a business as big as agriculture is bound to affect the entire economy. In spite of efforts to shackle agriculture by restrictive programs, it is a dynamic industry that is changing as rapidly as any other segment of the economy. In the five years from 1960 to 1965, farmers increased their output 30 per cent, with 40 per cent less labor. To take care of

Wednesday, November 24, 1965 increased production expenses the farmer today needs $2.50 for every $1 in 1950. Agriculture does not operate in a vocuum. It is closely related with all segments of the nation's economy."

There is an old saying that "as goes agriculture, so goes the nation." Consumers are beginning to feel the pinch of rising food costs, costs arising largely from higher expense of farm labor and costs AFTER the produce leaves the farm. At the same time, returns to the farmer remain relatively the same, Meanwhile, a a hungry world looks to the developed nations, especially the U. S., to feed the world's increasing billions. Only a strong, healthy agricultural economy can do this, if it can be done at all.

So, while we enj oy the fruits of our bountiful farms, our thanks should be mingled with some concern and prayers for the future of the American farmer.

The First Thanksgiving To celebrate the first American Thanksgiving, the men who lived on the rocky and barren soil of New England began the custom of thanking God for the harvest. They wondered at the seeming miracle that such poor land could sustain life, and then thanked God that the crops they sowed after such hard plowing came to fruition.

The settlers of the early New England colonies did not have modern conveniences of central heating, electric lights, gas stoves, radios, automobiles and indoor plumbing. They had only their Bibles and their meager harvests for which they thanked God. That the New Englanders were not mollycoddles is evident from the following letter of Roger Williams (16041683) concerning the character of the winter season in New England. He did not even complain about the weather: "It may be wondered why since New England is about twelve degrees nearer the sun, yet some part of the winter is plain. All islands are warmer than mainlands and continents. England being an island, England's winds are sea winds, which are commonly more thick and vapoury, and warmer winds.

The northwest wind, which occasioneth New England cold, comes over the cold frozen land and over millions of loads of snow. And yet the pure wholesomness of the air is wonderful; and the warmth of the sun such in the sharpest weather, that I have often seen the native children run about stark naked in the coldest days, and the Indian men and women lie by a

• Mr. and Mrs. Emil Skrdla from Renfrow, Okla., recently visited Mrs. Skrdla's friends and relatives in the West area. She is the former Doris Jane Krizan, and is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood.

Czech classes will resume in Dallas on Jan. 12, 1966, at the Sokol Athletic Center on Greenville Avenue. Classes will be held each Wednesday. Mrs. Josie Kankrlik will be the instructor.

• • A son, Edwin Charles, was born to Sgt. and Mrs. Raymond McDonald at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The mother is the former Frances Jurica, member of SPJST Lodge 117, Robstown. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Jurica; great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Holasek; great-grandmother is Mrs. Agnes Jurica, all of Corpus Christi. Edwin Charles has a two-year-old sister, Frances Faye.

• • Marie Hubenak, 87, passed away in Ganado on Oct. 28th. Sister Hubenak was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 138, Ganado.

• France Nedbalek, 81, passed away in Caldwell on Nov. 2nd. Burial was in the San Antonio Prairie Cemetery in Caldwell. Sister Nedbalek was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 13, Dime Box.

Vince Maresh, Jr., 65, passed away in Houston on Nov. 2nd. Burial was in Brookside Memorial Park in Houston.

Brother Maresh was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 17, New Tabor.

-SPJSTFeatures C. H. DUSEKS CELEBRATE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Dusek of Hallettsville celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 17. Their children, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Dusek, and Mr. and Mrs. Myron Dees were hosts.

The day's activities began with a service at the Vsetin Brethren Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Albert Dusek of Longview, a nephew of the Duseks, conducting. A portion of this service was a re-enactment of the original wedding ceremony fifty years ago. Two of the original wedding attendants, Mrs. Albina (Dusek) Guenther, and Mrs. Louise (Lucas) Bares, took part in the ceremony. Their children, Melvin and Marilyn, also stood with them. Rev. Dusek read several scripture verses which were favorites of the couple and delivered a short address on the subject of "Love and Its True Meaning."

Mrs. Joann Dees of Llano rendered two solos, "0, Perfect Love" and "The Lord's Prayer," accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Marilyn Dees.

Following these services, a barbecue dinner was served to aproximately 200 guests at Wied Hall. In the receiving line were the honored couple and their children. For the happy occasion, Mrs. Dusek wore a gold brocade dress with matching gold accessories. On her shoulder was a lovely white orchid corsage enhanced with gold ribbon. Mr. Dusek wore a dark suit and a white carnation boutonniere trimmed with gold leaves.

Registering the guests as they entered was Miss Janet Dusek. Pinning gold leaf favors on each guest were Misses Kathy and Sheryl Dees. On a near-by table original wedding pictures were displayed. There were also portraits of the couple and their family taken through the years and portraits of both the honorees' families.

Decorations of the hall featured white bells and golden numeral 50's which were placed at various places in the hall. The linen laid family table was centered with an arangement of yellow gladiolas flanked by gold candles in crystal candelabra.

In front are Sheryl and Kathy Dees of Georgetown. , the many gifts, flowers, and cards received from friends and relatives. After dinner was served, Mrs. Dusek opened the gifts, assisted by Mrs. Charlie Kana of Baytown and Mrs. Melvin Dusek.

The Happy ',Six of Hallettsville furnished the music for dancing in the afternoon. A grand march, led by Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sternadel, was enjoyed by all. The next two dances were reserved for the honored couple and their children.

At mid-afternoon punch and cake were served to the guests. On the serving table, laid with a gold satin cloth accented with a gathered skirt tribbed with bands of satin, was a three-tiered s q uare wedding cake nestled in gilOen ruffles, trimmed with sugar spun white roses and golden leaves. A colonade square was on top of the cake with the golden numerals "50." Napkins with "Charles and Lillie, 1915-1965," inscribed in gold, were used. Mrs. Herbert Muenchow of Houston served the cake and Miss Janet Dusek poured the punch.

Mr. Dusek was born in Ella Horn, Texas, to one of the earliest pioneer 'families of Lavaca County. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Josef Dusek. Mrs. Dusek is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Woytek of Sublime, Texas. The honorees were married on Oct. 19, 1915 at the home of the bride's parents in Sublime by Rev. Anton Moticka. Attendants in the wedding party were Miss Louise Lucas, now Mrs. William Baros of Westhoff, Miss Albina Dusek, now Mrs. Edward Guenther of Weimar, Mr. Edward Lu-

cas of Westhoff, and Mr. Albin Dusek, deceased.

Folowing their marriage, they resided in Sublime where he was engaged in vegetable farming. Their son Melvin was born in Sublime. In 1925, the family moved to Needville where Mr. Dusek operated a dry goods and grocery store. It was during this time that a daughter, Marilyn, was born. In 1941, Mr. Dusek moved his family to Granger, where he remained in the grocery and dry goods business until his retirement in 1955. In 1961, Mr. and Mrs. Dusek moved to Hallettsville where they now make their home.

Melvin lives in Victoria. heir daughter, Mrs. Myron Dees, lives in Georgetown. Mr. anud Mrs. Dusek have four grandchildren: Miss Janet Dusek of Victoria, Misses Kathy and Sheryl Dees and Nolan Charles Dees of Georgetown.

Mr. Dusek has four half brothers: Adolph, Oscar and Victor Dusek of Hallettsville, and Emil Dusek of Weimer; two half sisters: Mrs. Albina Guenther of Weimar and Mrs. Julie Woytek of Hallettsville. Mrs. Dusek has two sisters: Mrs. Emelie Trojcak of El Campo and Mrs. Augusta Malcik of Midfield.

Out of town guests for the celebration were from Needville, Georgetown, Westhoff, Dallas, Llano, Victoria, La Grange, Weimar, Houston, Sublime, El Campo, San Antonio, Midfield, Granger, Pasadena, Austin, Fort Worth, Longview, Gonzales, Cuero, Temple, Waco, Corpus Christi, and Seguin.

It was a gay and memorable occasion for Mr. and Mrs. Dusek, their family,

The Czech School Committee met recently and it was agreed to hold Czech classes each Wednesday, beginning January 12, 1966, at the Sokol Athletic Center, '7448 Greenville Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m.

The tuition is $5 for a ten-week course. "Progressive Czech" will be used, and can he purchased for $3.50 at the school.

The teacher will be Mrs. Josie Kankrlik. If interested please contact her at DA 7-0772.

Wednesday, November 24, 1965 LODGE NO. 40, HILLJE Dear Members, A new slate of officers and a new monthly meeting date have been selected by members of Hillje SPJST Lodge No. 40.

Effective in January, the monthly meetings will be held on the first Sunday of the month, instead of the second, as in the past.

"We hope that this will help increase attendance at our meetings," states Ed Kresta of Hillje, president of the lodge who was re-elected.

Jerry Polasek of Louise replaces John Kulcak of Plainview as vice president.

Other officers re-elected were Albert Kresta of El Campo, secretary; Charley Kulcak of El Campo, financial secretary, and Frank Sablatura of Hillje, treasurer and hall manager.

Mrs. Victor Knebel of El Campo was elected Youth Leader, and will be assisted by Mrs. Chuck Schwartzkopf.

Building committeemen are Paul Sablatura, Jerry Polasek, and Albert Kresta.

The annual audit of books will be conducted by Mrs. Chuck Schwartzkopf, Clem Bacak, and Ervin Kresta.

Albert Kresta is in charge of refreshment sales, and Chuck Schwartzkopf was named lodge reporter.

Dear Members, We held our last meeting on Sunday, Nov. 7th, with a real nice attendance.

All officers were present, except the recording secretary. There were 22 adults and 11 youth present. This was good members, keep it up in future meetings!

After the meeting we enjoyed a delicious shrimp-crab gumbo and rice meal. Our chef, Bro. Jaroszewski, donated the gumbo; Bro. and Sister Portacci donated the rice; Bro. and Sister Baumann donated the garlic and

VASTNfIC plain bread; and Bro. and Sister Frank Beran donated the beverages. Pastry and coffee were also donated. Thank you ail, brothers and sisters, for all these nice treats! I know everyone enjoyed it. Those of you who were not there missed a delicious meal and an enjoyable evening. This may happen again real soon, so attend the meetings and see what we cook up for next time.

Our December meeting will be hold Saturday, Dec. 4th at 6 p.m., 7301 Beards Lane, Brewery Workers' Hall, instead of Dec. 4th, as was voted in our last meeting.

This will be our Christmas party and election of officers for 1966. May I remind you that you, should all attend and lend us your cooperation and help in electing officers. We need all of you to go fOrward. The youth have shown their cooperation and willingness to help in their club, and we adults should do the same. Also, all you new members who have not yet been initiated, please be present at this meeting for initiation. Remember, Dec. 4th at 6 p.m.

LODGE NO. 117, ROESTOWN Lodge No. 117, Robstown, held its regular meeting on Sept. 12th at 3 p.m.

The ineetin;2; was calieLl to order by President, Sister Betty J,urica. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Patricia and Michael Pavelka, children of Bro. and Sis. Bennie Pavelka. Sis. Helen Pavelka brings the children to the meetings; in fact, she brought four of them the last time. We sure would like to see more children present, and after the meeting they could play games.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. A minute of silence was observed for Sis. Agnes Rektorik who passed away recently. Sis. RekWilk was a charter member of Lodge 117, Robstown, and had received her 50-year emblem in 1963.

A Christmas party and program will be held on Dec. 5th, following the regular meeting. Any child who wishes to take part in the Christmas program notify .Mrs. Eugene Hrncir or Mrs. Darlene Edwards. Those in charge of the Christmas party are Sisters Jurica, Edwards, Vlasta Mrazek, and Helen Pavelka. Helen will select her helpers and fix bags of goodies for all present.

At the last meeting we also discussed a food committee. This committee includes 'Sisters Mary Janak, Alice Rektorik and Augusta Sijansky. This committee will notify members to donate food for the deceased's family, relatives and friends at a designated place, the choice of the family.

The books were checked by Brothers Adolph Sijansky, Blahuta, and Walter Wisian. They were found in order. Sis. Helen Pavelka gave a report and the lodge is in good shape.

I am late in giving this report but there was so much to do as always. We were busy planting the fall garden which at present looks very promising.

The mustard greens are ready for the pot, potatoes are also ready; only the tomatoes aren't ripe but the vines are loaded.

My husband and I left on Oct. 25th for a two-week trip to visit our daughter, Frances, and her husband, Sgt. McDonald. We had our first visit with our new grandson, Edwin Charles, born on Oct. 15th at Fort Rucker, Ala. They also have a 2-year-old daughter, Frances Faye.

In the way there we took Highway 90 through Liberty, New Orleans, La., Biloxi, Miss., Pensacola, Fla., and then into Alabama. We spent one night in New Orleans and that night we walked down Canal Street and the French Quarter. The next morning we got in-

VEST/sTfIC to heavy traffic in New Orleans and it took us quite some time to get out.

Going toward Mississippi, we saw millions of dollars of damage to property in New Orleans, especially the little houses that were built at the water's edge. There aren't any homes there, only piles of rubbish that was bulldozed, and the foundation posts jut up out of the ground. Some homes, (not at the water's edge) are still covered with sea weed, sticks and mud; all of the signs are demolished. This damage was all done by a gracious lady called "Betsy." The damages were seen from Baton Rrouge, La., to Mobile, Ala. We enjoyed our stay in Alabama with the children, especially the two little ones. It was hard to part but we'll be seeing them in about two months.

We left Daleville, Ala. on Nov. 4th and took off for Montgomery and Slelma, Ala., then on to Meridian, Jackson, and Vicksburg, Miss., into Monroe, La., an into Texas via Jasper, and on to my cousin Joe Vanek and Sophia's home. Joe is an ex-resident of Penelope, Texas, but by now he claims to be a native of Corrigan. We spent two nights and one day in East Texas where we spent a most enjoyable time.

Joe and Sophia took us to Lufkin and at noon to a good cat fish dinner. The owner of this diner raises his own fish in the rear of the building and the cat fish are very fresh and tasty.

There are several places like this and all seem to be doing a good business.

We are planning on a trip back to Alabama next fall and are hoping to go to Miami, Fla., with the children for few days.

Our grandson was named Edwin Charles after my husband and greatgrandfather, Charles Holasek of Corpus Christi. He is already a member of the SPJST as is the rest of the family.

All of you members of Lodge No. 117 bring a friend on Dec. 5th. The sisters are asked to bring food, and supper will follow the program.

SWEET HOME LODGE NO. 63 Dear Members, Please mark Dec. 12th as a special date. On this date we will have our special meeting, followed by a Christmas party. Bring the children. Santa is due to arrive some time in the afternoon. This is the time of the year when kids have to start being good, and I'm sure (Santa will have fruit and candy for the good children.

We will also exchange presents for the grownups. Each lady is to bring a present for a lady costing not less than 50 cents. Each man is to bring a present for a man costing not less than 50 cents. These gifts will be exchanged by Santa. If you have friends or company that Sunday, bring them along. If they wish, they can also get in on the present exchange. Remember whoever brings a gift, gets a gift ex changed.

If you don't wish to get in on the gift exchange, don't let it stop you from coming. Come on out annyway because there will be more on the program for you to enjoy.

The good ladies are asked again to bring lunch as usual. Refreshments will be served free.

Christmas comes but once a year and now it's only a little over 30 days away.

Helen Ilegwood, my assistant, was in charge of getting the prizes, and what a great job she did! It really added to the pool fund, and our thanks here go to Blinka Variety, North Main Jewelers, John Hilsher, Birdie and Al Eilsher, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Olexa, Emil Horelica, Mary Schenburn, Bova Florist, and Agnes Michulka.

As I walked through the hall Sunday many handed me Gift Stars toward our projects. They were from Mrs. Anna Zilfus, Mrs. Rudy Dybala, and Mrs. John Naplava, Sr. We certainly feel good when we have so many supporting our projects.

Wednesday, November 24, 1965 LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Friends, Since we were out of town the weekend of the 13th (opening of deer season!), we missed out on so much — the lodge meeting, the Ray Krenek dance, the Swimming Pool Benefit Festival, with its turkey dinner and the comedy play, and Talita and John Hilsher's open house, where so many had a lovely time! Oscar got a six pointer, and we were happy about that!

The swimming Pool Benefit Festival turned out very nicely! The turkey dinner was delicious, and much credit is due Annie Vala, Wanda Elsner, and Harley Cox and their helpers: Della and Joe Miksch, Marian and L. A. Mikes, Mr. and Mrs. E. UNCORIti7 uTED MINUTES OF THE FALL MEETING, OF DISTRICT III, SPJST Held at 'S.PJST Lodge No. 92, Ft. Worth, Sunday, October 24, 1965 The fall meeting of SPJST District III was called -to order at 10:40 a.m.

by District III President Bro. Jerry Milan (154). The Pledge of Allegiance was led by District Flag Bearer Johnny Pokladnik (84). A moment of silence was observed in tribute to the deceased Of District III who had passed away since the spring meeting.

Welcome was extended by Bro. Joe Paprskar, president of Lodge No. 92, Fort Worth. The response was given

by Brothers Jerry Milan and 1st vice president Rudolph Zalman (35).

All District III officers were present. Attention was called to the grave illness. of Sisters Mary Schefcak (130), and Joe Ehrenberger (84), both of Dallas; also of the illness of Sister Hattie Urbanovsky, wife of Supreme Lodge Secretary Raymond Urbanovsky. A motion was made to send all three sisters a get-well message from the membership of District III, to be sent by Secretary Morris. (Letters on file).

District offieers were then introduced by President Milan. The minutes from the spring meeting were read by Bro. Morris, secretary. After one minor change, the minutes were accepted as read. Brother Sid Pokladnik (84) made a motion that •Secretary Morris send a letter to Sister Mildred Baleja (84), past secretary, commending her for her fine job as secretary and in writing the minutes of the spring meeting. The treasurer's report was given by Bro. Roman Parma (66). Balance as of March 14, 1965 was $710.48, with an additional $133.75 collected since, mak-

V ESTNf3 frig a total of $844.23. Paid out expenses amounted to $376.01 since March 14th, giving us a current balance of $463.22.

Balance on hand in the District III Youth Fund amounts to $1,706.84, which is on deposit with Dallas Federal Savings and Loan.

Brother Parma pointed out that four lodges have contributed nothing to the Youth Fund: Lodges 128, 110, 54, and 5.

Bro. Ben Jarma (84) made a motion to accept Bro. Parma's report.

Seconded by Bro. Otto Hanus (66).

Bills presented to the treasurer for payment amounted to $2.88 from Sister Mary Renfro (154) for envelopes, and stationery; in the amount of $20.54 from Youth Director Carol Nesuda for telephone calls. Bro. Sid Pokladnik asked' that Sister Nesuda explain more fully what the telephone calls were for, which she did. Bro. Otto Hanus made a motion that the bills be paid; seconded by Sister Mary Hale (154).

Supreme Lodge Secretary Raymond A. Urbanovsky was introduced, who excused the absence of the other Supreme Lodge officers. He reported further that the Order had been making fine progress. So far in 1965, we have had an increase in assets of $448,000, which averages out to about $1,700 a day. This is a credit to all our local lodges and their cooperation. Vice President Hejny has called this a "banner year," with 2,032 new members so far this year and $4,379,000 worth of new insurance in force. The two-month sales contest was also a success, with 551 new applications, and $1,155,000 worth of insurance sold during the months of August and September. Bro. Urbanovsky pointed out that District V wrote up more than half the total new members so far in 1965. He went on to praise the role of women in our fraternal organizations, stating that Mrs. Louise Patrick was recently elected president of the National Fraternal Congress, which he attended in Washington, D.C. He went on to say that people still do not fully understand insurance; people are still wanting to borrow money on funds that are not yet accumulated. Our organizers should explain this to new members. He also pointed out the great importance of having our beneficiaries up to date, so that death claims can be processed as expeditiously as possible. Regarding the annual questionnaire that will soon be mailed out to the local lodges, Bro. Urbanovsky pointed out the importance of listing all fraternal and charitable activities, and that great care

In her report District Youth Director Carol Nesuda (25), commended the young people on their varied activities.

Everyone is really a winner, whether they win a trophy, cash award, or some other prize. She recognized Kathy Vrla (130) for winning first place in the State Point System contest, and to Robert Dobecka (6), first place in the State Merit Book contest; to District

III Queen Sherrie Kubala (92), who was runner-up at the State Queen contest; and Angela Paprskar, 2nd place winner in the State Talent contest, ages 17-19'. She commended Lodges 154, 130, 82, and 25, for carrying on special group activities. Local lodge youth leaders were recognized: Sisters Mary Paprskar (92), Lillie Dobecka (6), Ruby Pavelka (35), Ruth Krizan (6), Libbie Parma (66), Mary Renfro (154), Helen Vrla (130), Frances Kudrna (25), and Lillie Jarma (84). She pointed out that the District III Youth Council is the critical bond between the local lodges and the District Youth Director, Sbe introduced the following officers

Wednesday, November 24, 1965 of the Youth Council: Frances Miller (66) — president; Robert Dobecka (6) — vice president; Jeanette Krizan (6) — secretary; Shirley Nemec (54) — treasurer, and Frances Jo Kudrna (25) — council delegate. She reported that the "Talking Fund" at the YAD at Lodge 54 brought $17.00!

President Jerry Milan commented that he enjoyed the trip taken with the youth. Bro. Urbanovsky apologized for the Supreme Lodge for not having refreshments for the touring youngsters when they visited the Supreme • Lodge .Hqs. The next report was given by District III Organizer, Bro. Arnold Vrla (130).

Bro. Vrla echoed the sentiments of Sister Nesuda and expressed thanks to the youth leaders for their hard work in their thankless task. He stated that he thought the idea of sending a letter of welcome, signed by the Supreme Ledge President, together with a button, to new members, was a fine idea.

The sales contest during May, June, and July netted over one-quarter million in insurance sales. Winners were Norma Pavelka (35) — $25 check; winning top spot for two months in a row was Sister Anna Milan (154) — check for $15. Bro. James Pavlicek (6) was winner of the trip to the TFC in Beaumont. The quota for 1965 is $825,000; through September Dist. III had sold $682,625, leaving a balance still to be solicited in the amount of $142,375.

Bro. Vrla urged members to pass the names of any prospests on to their local organizers. He recognized 14 organizers present at the meeting, and asked them to meet with him at the rear of the hall 15 minutes prior to resumption of the afternoon session. In conclusion, Bro. Vrla extended congratulations to Lodge 92 on their 55th anniversary, which that lodge observed recently.

District III Director Bro. 'Sid Pokladnik (84) then gave his report. As of Oct. 1st, the total assets of the SPJST amounted to $14,474, 986.82, with total expenses as of the same date amounting to $640,674.36, leaving a balance of $13, 834,312.46. On Jan. 1st, 1965, assets totalled $13,386,093.92, so that the increase for the first nine months of 1965 amounts to $448,219.14. On Oct. 1st, the SPJST had lent out $703,000 in approved mortgage loans; $280,490.30 of that amount being consummated in Septemebr. Brother Pokladnik went into detail to show the membership what the $640,674.36 expenses was spent for: (all figures for first nine months of 1965): (for the ENTIRE SPJST):

On Oct. 1st, 1965, the Order had $387,791.31 cash. on hand. Brother pokladnik hoped that he had given the membership an insight into the operations of the Supreme Lodge. "It is a big operation and we are dealing with a lot of money," he stated.

Commenting on the election of women to high fraternal posts, Bro. Pokladnik stated that Mrs. Benito Pavlu was elected president of the Texas Fraternal Congress. He further stated that the members of the Supreme Lodge can't make all the functions over the state; there is too much going on. Regarding the Rest Home in Taylor, Bro. Pokladnik stated that the home is full at all times, with a permanent waiting list of about 40 to 50. Sufficient operating cash is on hand, and the Troubils are excellent and reliable managers.

President Milan remarked about the successes of the "Czechoslovak Spectacular" at Lodge 66, Elm Mott on Sept.

19th, and of Czech Day in Dallas on Oct. 10th. Reseda dancers are always available to dance the Beseda, thereby keeping alive this wonderful Czech tradition. He stated that these sort of activities are a very good thing and help keep our Czech people closer together.

The king and queen of Lodge 130, Dallas, were introduced: David Podhrasky and Jennifer Sneed.

Bro. Alvin Nesuda (25) made a motion that we adjourn for lunch, seconded by Bro. Arnold Vrla (130). Session will re-convene at 2 p.m.

DISTRICT VII MEETING

District VII, SPJST, held its regular fall meeting on Oct. 17, 1961, at Floresville. Lodge No. 107 Rozkvet Zapadu, was the host lodge. Bro. Billy Pavliska, president of Lodge 107, welcomed the membership, and then Bro. Pete Valchar, president of District VII, took over . At this time Bro. and Sis. Koliha, members of Lodge 26, were introduced, and Bro. Hejny. All of the district officers were present at roll call.

At this point, a discussion was held on how to get members interested in attending district meetings. This was an important discussion because the attendance was very poor. There were many pros and cons, but finally, a motion was made by Bro. Frank Sacky that door prizes be given at the district meetings. Bro. Hrna seconded the motion. Motion approved. Another motion was made that the door prizes would be as follows: $20 to $25 will be allowed for four gifts in the amount of $5 or $5.50; two for the youth up to 16 years of age and two prizes for adults.

A minute of silence was observed for the deceased members.

Roll call was made by President Valchar. The following lodges were represented: 26, 56, 79, 73, 107, 117, 118, 147, 152, and 161. Ten lodges were represented.

Brother Hrna, District VII Treasurer, was asked to give his report. He gave the following report: General Fund $98.10, and Youth Fund in the "red", but at this time several members donated money to get the Y.F. in the "black."

Next discussion was the next meeting. At this time, District VII doesn't have a place or date for the spring meeting. Everyone present was asked to discuss this matter at their local meeting, and any lodge that wishes may ask for the next meeting. Please notify the secretary as soon as possible and the first lodge to ask will be given the privilege to be the hosts of the next district meeting.

At this time, Bro. Hejny, Vice President of the Supreme Lodge, spoke to the members and visitors. He stated that over 2,000 new members were accepted in the Order. Never a record

10 such as this was reached (over four million dollars worth of insurance).

We are on the road to progress. Policies were late because of the heavy volume of insurance written. Five organizers qualified in the contest for a trip to the Fraternal Congress. Bro. Frank Sacky of District VII was one of these organizers.

Bro. Koliha, Treasurer of the Supreme Lodge, spoke in the Czech language to the elders. The elders are mostly Czech and that's the language they like to hear. As of July 1, 1965, there were 1323 real estate loans made in the value of $11,087,091.40, and by Oct. 1, 1965, there were 1328 loans valued at $11,439,676.91, an increase of $352,575.51 in three months. One must advertise to make money. He also explained that the SPJST building in Temple was too small. During the time that Bro. Holasek served this district as your director no mortgages were foreclosed. He told the membership that Bro. Holasek was unable to attend this meeting because of eye surgery just three weks ago.

A motion was made and approved that a get-well card be sent Bro. Holasek and signed by all district officers.

A letter was read from Bro. and Sis. Kleprlik wished District VII steady progress.

Bro. Roy Hranicky, Dist. VII organizer, asked to meet with all organizers present right after lunch.

Sister Maxine Pavliska, District Youth Director, made a report on the trip to Six Flags Over Texas. There was a shortage of money, but several members opened their hearts and donated money for this project and it was a worthwhile one at that. She also reported that the youth of Lodge 56 were unable to attend this meeting but would donate one half of the profits from a cake walk which would be held on Oct. 24th. The money would be given to the District VII Youth Fund.

Tickets were sold for a Corningware dish and proceeds given to the District VII Youth Fund.

Bro. Jim Kucera expressed his thanks for the time he served as State Youth Director. He thanked the members for the wonderful cooperation he got from the lodges.

The youth program was well presented.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR This is a very important time of the year for most of you. It is a time when you choose the officers in your club in l966. Regardles of the outcome of an election, your support and work is needed. A club is only as successful and strong as the members who work together for one comon goal. That is the true fraternal spirit that has put the SPJST where it is today and it is up to you not to let it down tomorrow. So you see you have a big challenge and responsibility ahead of you. Work with your fellow members and youth leaders to prepare for an election that will be constructive to your club.

This article will primarily deal with helpful suggestions to asist you and your club prepare for a good election.

In a later issue, I'll discuss suggestions for the election itself, installation of new officers, and initiation of new members.

First of all, prepare a summary of the activities and projects your club has participated in this past year.

Usually, the secretary is best qualified for this project because of the records of the meetings, and with the cooperation of different committees, a complete and accurate report can be compiled. It would be fitting to make that report at your election meeting, before the elections. Sometimes we forget the

efforts put forth in the early part of the year. It also may help a member to determine who to vote for. By all means, send a copy of this annual report to the Vestnik. It will be good publicity for your club, and it provides good incentive for our other clubs. Also, I am confident that our readers enjoy reading your letters about your constructive projects for the SPJST. A good way to prepare for elections is to appoint a nominating committee.

This group can sit down, discuss, and determine who is best suited for each position. When the meeting day arrives they can present their proposed slate of officers to your membership. The members can then make any additions they wish. This preparation •can solve many problems, such as an unnecessarily long meeting, nominations without much forethought, and so on.

Should this be something new in your club, try it. You may find that investigation and analysis of candidates might give you more suitable officers.

By all means vote for the ones who will respect the honor of the past, the ideas of others, and will support and strive for the common good of your club. Think, carefully and act wisely and your support will be needed all year, regardless of the election outcome.

Determining which offices are needed is another consideration. Here is a proposal for your executive board.

President — presides over every meeting with a non-partial attitude

for proposals being considered. Official representative of the club.

Vice President — officiates in the absence of the president or when the president wishes to voice an opinion on an issue being debated. Head Chairman of Committee Chairmen, keeping abreast of all activities and their progress.

Secretary — records all the proceedings of each meeting in a special book, passed on by past secretaries, thus keeping a continuous record of the club.

Treasurer — keeps the financial records, gives complete financial records at every meeting, records members in good standing if dues are collected, and pays approved bills.

Parliamentarian — knowledge of rules and by-laws, parliamentary procedure, officiates at elections.

Regarding committees, I am outlining the following, which you may combine or include in the duties of an office. Regardless, give as many people as possible a job or duty. It creates more interest as well as avoiding a few doing all the work. Committees are also a good place to give experience to your younger members who will be in your shoes in a few years.

Entertainment — in charge of all social activities and projects.

Refreshment — in charge of all refreshments at meetings,socials, and special events requiring food.

Reporter — writes to the Vestnik about club activities and projects.

Pulieity -- notifies mtambers of meetings and socials, provides advertisement for special events.

Membership — accepts, introduces, and welcomes new members and visitors into meetings, sets up contests, ways to get new members, and takes charge of invitations.

Sunshine — sends get-well cards, sympathy cards, etc., as well as visits when necessary.

Historian — keeps history and scrapbook of club activities.

I hope the above suggestions will be constructive and helpful to your needs. Do not hesitate to write if I can be of further assistance. Possibly some of these proposals will not apply to you, but I hope, on the other hand, some of them will be of help.

We are having some beautiful weather — real good weather for deer hunting. Teddy and daddy hunted all day Saturday and Sunday. They like to be in the woods.

The boys on the football team won the district championship and was I proud! I'm in the pep squad, and Friday night I yelled so much I could hardly talk Saturday morning. I really enjoy all the games and I hope it never ends.

We are going to have a Christmas party at the hall the 19th of December at 6 p.m. Each one is asked to bring a present.

Yesterday was Sunday. Aunt Rosie and Uncle John were here from Damon; also Butch and Anita were here.

We all went to the Wheelock Hall Saturday night. We had a nice time.

Then we had the drawing for the door prizes. The winners are: Frankie Mynar and Anthony Mynar. There was a motion made that we should adjourn the meeting. Blake Straten made the motion and it was seconded by Raymond Hromadka. The meeting was adjourned. and we got our refreshments.

13 LUDWIG L. MATUS, who passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, 1965, at the Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner. He attained the age of 72 years.

Burial was in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery.

The deceased was a faithful member of Lodge No. 45, and was always mindful of his duties to his lodge. He will be greatly missed by all the members.

Brother Chaloupka, a retired farmer, died in the Polly Ryon hospital in Richmond, Texas, after an illness of seven weeks, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1965, at the age of 70 years.

Thursday, Oct. 14th, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Henry Beseda officiating. Interment was in the WOW Cemetery in Rosenberg.

The deceased was born in Czechoslovakia Aug. 5th, 1895, and came to America in 1913. In 1917 he married Julia Elsik, in Snook, Texas, and in 1942 they moved to Rosenberg. His wife preceded him in death in 1952.

Survivors are three sons, Frederick of Rosenberg, Edward of Corpus Christi, and Rudolph of Alvin. Ten grandchildren also survive.

Brother Chaloujka joined SPJST Lodge Novy Tabor No. 17 near Caldwell in 1931, and after moving to Rosenberg, transferred to Lodge No. 108, which later merged with Lodge Needvine No. 81. He was a member for 34 years and was a good member, always remembering his obligations to the lodge. We join the family of our departed brother in their sorrow, and may he rest in eternal peace.

Funeral services for Mrs. Louis P. Tyl were held from St. Ann Catholic Church in Kaufman at 10 a'clock Saturday morning, Nov. 6, Father Albert Tyl of Decatur, a cousin, was celebrant.

Interment was in the Kaufman Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Henry I3abovec, Willie Janicek, Harry Bedner, Johnny Duyka, and Charlie and Hubert Hetmer.

Mrs. Tyl died in a Dallas hospital Friday, Nov. 5th, which she had entered as a patient the previous Monday.

She was born at Scurry, May 10, 1920, but had lived in the Lone Star community for 29 years. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Kaufman. ur v iv in g are her husband, Louis P. Tyl of Lone Star; two daughters, Miss Patricia Tyl and Miss Linda Tyl, both of Lone Star; a son, Airman Second Class Ronald L. Tyl of the U. S. Air Force; her father, Frank Vavra of Lone Star, a sister, Mrs. Raymond Vrzalik of Kaufman; two brothers, John Vavra, Jr, of Mesquite and Louis Vavra of Lone Star.

Rosary was read at the Allan W. Dees Funeral Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, with Father Tyl as celebrant.

1 envelope unflavored gelatin 1/4 cup cold water 3 egg yolks 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 3 egg whites 1/2 cup sugar 1 baked 9-inch pie shell Soften the gelatin in 1/4 cup cold water. Beat the egg yolks slightly and add 1/3 cup sugar, lemon puice and salt.

Place in the top of the double boiler and cook over hot water, stirring constantly until the mixture is of custard consistency. Remove from the heat, add the softened gelatin and stir until it is dissolved. Add the lemon rind and chill to the consistency of unbeaten egg white. Beat the egg whites until stiff and gradually add 1/2 cup sugar. Gold the gelatin mixture into the beaten egg whites. Pour the filling into the pie shell and chill until the filling is firm. Garnish with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

Here is a delicious fragrant puddinglikedessert, boasting a natural wholesomeness from its two main ingredients, fresh apples and rice.

Jonathan Apple Javanese

2 cups water 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup uncooked rice 1/4 cup raisins 3 cups Jonathan Applesauce 1/2 cup chopped almonds 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons butter 1/2 pint table cream Bring water and salt to a boil in a

saucepan with tight-fitting cover. Add rice. Cover and cook until tender, about 25 minutes. Meanwhile, rinse and drain raisins. To the fresh applesauce, add the raisins, chopped almonds, and lemon rind. Combine sugar and cinnamon. Butter generously a 11/9 quart casserole. Into this, place a layer of rice, then a layer of the applesauce mixture, and dot with butter; repeat the process, then sprinkle half the sugar-cinnamon mixture ever the top and dot with more butter. Bake in hot oven, 400 F., about 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp. Serve hot with remaining sugar-cinnamon mixture and table cream. Serves four to six.

TURKEYS ARE. PLENTIFUL

Mrs. Owen Clyatt, Extension consumer marketing specialist with Texas A&M University, reports that turkeys are in ample stock for Thanksgiving and Christmas menus. Turkey production is in full swing, and turkeys in the over 10-pound category are the most economical buys. You can expect slightly higher prices on turkeys in the four to eight pound category.

The pork section of the meat counter may have a few good buys on canned hams and picnics. Bacon prices vary according to brand and grade. Fresh ham roasts may be found at moderate prices.

Recent forecast of the canned salmon jack indicates that the big supply of high quality red salmon should move wel at substantially reduced prices, assisted by the sharp market advances on the short supply of the medium quality pinks. Gulf shrimp packers seem to have come through the recent hurricane with little threat to their packs. Expectations continue for a fair to good autumn production.

There's an ample volume of good quality, fresh vegetables from which to choose. The opening of new areas for pole beans means better volume and quality — and lower prices. Celery is outstanding this week. Red potatoes, russets and sweet potatoes are all good values. Other economical offerings include carrots, onions, cooking greens, turnips, rutabagas, and hard shell squash. Cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, peppers and cucumbers are priced moderately for fair to good quality.

Crisp, fresh apples continue plentiful — Jonathans, York, Red and Golden Delicious varieties. Grapefruit, oranges, tangerine, and tangelo supplies are increasing each week with steady quality improvement. Bananas

HOMEMAKER'S ATTITUDES TOWARD HOUSEHOLD TASKS How do homemakers really feel about household tasks — and the appliances designed to make these easier to perform?

You may like to compare your own attitudes toward household chores with research done at the New York World's Fair', says Mrs. Elsie P. Short, Texas A&M University Extension home management specialist.

Two hundred twenty-five women, representing all age groups, all income levels, and all regions of the nation — were interviewed at the World's Fair.

They were asked about their attitudes toward their household chores and the appliances they have. Here are some of the findings: Maids are a thing of the past, according to 73 per cent of the women interviewed. They reported they'd rather purchase additional household appliances than hire a Today's homemakers are a generation of do-it-yourself women. Not only do they prefer to run their own homes, but they also know how hard it is to find competent help. Many of them were reluctant to give up some of their privacy when the cleaning woman Comes.

"We may not want to admit it. but some of us have our own ways which the hired help does not know or understand," says Mrs. Short.

The "big three" appliances named by the women as their most important appliances were ranges, refrigerators, and washers — in that order. The vacuum cleaner rated fourth. One out of every three of the women rated the vacuum cleaner as the most important and necessary appliance-aid for running their homes. Appliances also needed to keep a home in good shape ranged from clothes dryers to stereo systems. votes for the "most helpful" appliances were in this order: Clothes dryers, 19. per cent; dishwashers, 17 per cent; irons, 14 per cent, and electric mixers, 7 per cent.

MORE GLAMOR Dishwashers are doing more work and taking on more glamor each year

Many top-of-the-line models now provide three-and-four level washing action within the tub because impellers or wash arms have been combined with extra sprays. The spray comes from top or bottom, or both, to provide revolving "walls of water" much hotter than the homemaker's hands can stand.

New pre-wash cycles now do away with another of the common consumer gripes — that of scraping and rinsing before loading. Continuous filter systems now trap small food particles and some models even feature a waste disposing action with tainless steel blades that liquefy soft food scraps.

The programmed cycles allow the homemaker to select the wash suited to the load to be washed.

Most manufacturers have provided some type of plate warmer in drying cycle, too. Mrs. Short says.

The automatic detergent and wetting agent injectors are becoming more popular. The latter is an important item in hard water areas. The wetting agent, when released in the last rinse water, prevents water spots on glassware and fine dishes.

Other improved features include top dish racks that are completely removable. Some adjust up or down to accommodate odd-shaped serving dishes in the top or bottom of the machine.

Decorator colors are more abundant, with a variety of practical vinyl or wood tops on the portables. Reports indicate that manufacturers are working on quieter models with new speed controls, Mrs. Short adds'.

assures good root development before the top growth commences. Here are suggestions from Everett Janne, Texas A&M University Extension University Extension landscape horticulturist on how to do the planting job.

Dig the tree pit large enough to receive the roots without bending or breaking; do not cut the roots to fit the hole. Separate the good top soil from the poorer subsoil as the hole is dug. Unless the top soil is extremely poor, it can be mixed with peat moss or well rotted compost and used as backfill. Use two parts of soil to one part of peat moss in preparing the backfill.

It is desirable, he says, to prune back the top growth to compensate for the roots lost in digging and transplanting.

Do this by removing about 1,4 of each branch, making the cut to an outside bud. It may be necessary to thin out some of the lateral branches to develop good scaffold branches. By no means should all lower limbs be removed reducing the main stem to a whip. If a high limbed tree is desired, low limbs can be removed later after the plant is well established. Do not remove more than two lower limbs per year.

Place a mound of the enriched top soil in the bottom of the hole to support the roots of the plant so that when placed in the hole the plant will be at the same level with the soil surface as it was in the nursery. As you fill the hole, work the soil in around the roots so that there are no air pockets. After the hole is two-thirds full, fill with water and allow it to drain away. Then fill the hole with the enriched soil until level with surrounding soil. Using additional soil, build a berm or dam around the outter edge of the hole to aid in watering the first season. This should be removed or spread out after the plant is well established.

Trees over four feet high should be staked the first year to keep them straight. This can be done by driving a wooden stake or iron pipe into the ground about 6 to 8 inches from the trunk in the direction of the prevailing wind. The tree acn be tied to the stake with a soft rope or a wire which has been run through an old piece of hose to protect the bark.

Never mix fertilizer with the soil used in the backfill. Wait until the plant is well established before applying fertilizer, advises the horticulturist.

FOLIAGE PLANTS IN HOME. HAVE THEIR PROBLEMS Many ailments of house plants, usually attributed to diseases or insects, actually result from the environment in which they are forced to live, says E. E. Janne, Extension landscape horticulturist at Texas A&M University.

Some of the more common causes of improper growth of house plants are listed by the horticulturist. Burned or brown leaf tips and leaf edges can be caused by exposure to low temperatures; by applying too• much fertilizer:, allowing the plant to be come too dry for short periods or by applying liquid fertilizer to dry soil, says Janne.

When leaves turn yellow and drop from the plant at the slightest touch, over-watering is usually the cause.

Poor drainage, tight soil mixture or keeping the plants too dry over long periods can cause leaves to be smaller than normal. Small leaves and long internodes between them usually result from low light intensitiesand/or high room temperatures, explains Janne.

The yellowing or dropping of leaves at various stem levels can be caused from overwatering, poor drainage and aeration, chilling, or gas fumes in the air. Weak growth, light green or yellowish green foliage may result from too much light, a• poor root spstem or damaged roots, explains the specialist.

Many times plants fail to make proper growth regardless of the care or treatment provided. Janne says this may be due to the high salt content of the water available in the area. This condition can be partially overcome, he advises, by providing good soil drainage and overwatering. The excess water will move through the soil and drain into the container below the pot holding the plant. This excess water must be poured from the container after each watering and never be left to evaporate, he said.

Janne suggests to persons interested in more details on how to care for house plants, a visit with the local county agent or home demonstration agent for a copy of TAP-369, "Indoor Landscaping with Live Foliage Plants."

Items HISTORY OF THE TURKEY With the very American holiday observance of Thanksgiving, American tables throughout the land will be once again graced with the golden brown turkey, surrounded by potatoes, corn, apples, and other shining fruits

from the bountiful harvests in our country.

The fat turkey on your Tha,nksgiving table has a strange ancestral history of travel from, the wild woods of Central America across the Atlantic Ocean through Europe and Africa to Turkey, and back again across the ocean to North. America.

The saga of the wandering bird began about three centuries ago, when the Spanish conquistadores discovered Mexico and South America and plundered the golden treasures of the Aztec Indians. They also stole some of the savory semicultivated birds they found among the royal possessions of King Montezuma.

According to chronicles, the Spanish navigator Francesco Fernandez took these birds across the ocean on his return home to Spain in 1519. From Spain, the turkey, named Meleagris, spread through the trade routes of central Europe.

Since the Mohammedans at that time held the southern coast of the Mediterranean the tasty birds were quickly brought to the two great centers of Moslem life — Mecca and Constantinople. From here, chronicles relate that the birds spread through parts of the Turkish empire, backtracked through the lower Danube valley, across northern Greece, and into Austria and Germany.

They arrived in England about 1530, and by the end of the 16th century they were common in Scotland.

As the turkey moved throughout Europe, new and different varieties developed, and they looked different from the way they looked upon arrival in Spain. The black turkey became quite common in Spain, France and parts of England, probably developed by continual selection of the darkest turkeys for breeding. In England it was called the Norfolk Black.

The white turkey was developed in Holland, and this breed then spread to Grance, Austria and Hungary. Mingling of the black and white produced the gray turkey of England, Ireland and Italy. When the gray was bred to the black, the blue or slate-colored turkey was produced.

The name "turkey" became affixed during the bird's circuitous route through the Middle East. Curiously enough, when the turkey first reached northern Europe, it was credited to a land even farther east than Turkey — India. The great natural historian of the 16th century, Konrad Gesner,

Wednesday, November 24, 1965 called the bird "Indian" or "Calcutta," or even "foreign" fowl.

Relics of this Indian naming still survive in some modern European languages. The turkey is called gallo d' india in Italian, dindon in French and Indianer in Viennese German.

During the American colonization period, in the 17th century, the birds were packed up and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean again. In the New World, they were mated with native wild turkeys, forming foundation stock from which our present turkey varieties have developed. As the early American settlers moved west, so did the turkeys, and today the domesticated birds are grown extensively throughout the United States.

At the present time, turkey raising is a huge commercial production. This year farmers are expected to produce about 103 million turkeys 4 per cent more than last year, according to the Department of Agriculture. This prosperous crop is more numerous than that of previous years, but down from the 1961 record of 108 million.

Minnesota leads in turkey production this year with an estimated 16 million turkeys, edging ahead of California, which has dropped from first place with its production of 15 million.

Other top producers include, in order of production, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Ohio.

For the last 10 years, the Beltsville small white turkeys, which are "midgets" weighing about seven pounds with much white meat, have been extremely popular with the American people. Present plans of growers are to produce heavier birds in order to supply the growing demand of restaurants and food processing plants. Many turkeys now weigh 50 to 70 pounds, and some even weigh 100 pounds.

Leathercra ft is good for Johnny.

Since he is partially deaf and mute, he has few other outlets for selfexpression. In addition, leathercraft work helps him establish motor-muscular coordination by teaching him to effectively use his hands. When Johnny came to Travis, he could hardly grasp a wooden mallet handle, but after

Last year, Johnny and over 140 other students at Travis spent long and rewarding hours making belts, moccasins, gloves, and other objects from leather donated by generous Texas deer hunters. The students in Johnny's class have been helped immeasurably as have been hundreds of other retarded, mental, and tuberculosis patients in 21 schools and hospitals across the state.

The only limit on the program begun under the Board of State Hos t -pitalsndSecho,itnumber of hides donated. Obviously, when hides are plentiful, more projects can be planned and therapeutic• benefits attained.

L. M. Rathbone, an Austin taxidermist, has donated his facilities and time to receive, store, and distribute the hides for the program. Hunters wishing to donate their hides to help hundreds of students like Johnny should follow Rathbone's simple instructions.

V2STNfP TAXES TO BE CONSIDERED IN BUYING OR RENTING PROPERTY Check tax angles before deciding on whether to buy or rent, advises Mrs. Wanda Meyer, Extension home management specialist at Texas A&M University. Decisions on buying or renting a building or other property, such as machinery and equipment, often depend on federal income tax consequences.

Here's a rundown of tax angles that may help you make such a decision: If you buy a building, you acquire a capital asset and can recover the cost through depreciation deductions. If you finance it by mortgage, the interest paid is deductible. Cost, of taxes, insurance, repairs and maintenance can also be deducted.

If you rent a building, the rent paid is deductible along with expenses for repairs, maintenance and taxes you may have to pay under the terms of the lease. The amount claimed as rent, however, must be actual rent — not a gift or distribution of dividends disguised as rent. If you make improvements, you can deduct depreciation for them as well as rent.

If you lease with an option to buy, you have an advantage over "straight" renting, but you may run into a tax problem. You can deduct rent — which would exceed depreciation deductions — and retain the right to buy at the same time.

This advantage can be lost if the lease is considered an installment sales contract rather than a rental contract.

Solution is to keep the option price high enough, or rental payments low enough, so that for tax purposes the rent won't be treated as payment on the purchase price.

Boys and girls learn attitudes concerning making and receiving money and its use from their parents. Values and goals of the parents, in all probability, arc the ones the children acquire, the specialist says.

"Young people must have experience to develop a philosophy and pattern of spending. They must have money for necessities as well as for extras. Children grow in ability to manage money by making choices in the way it is used, but this cannot be learned in one easy lesson," Mrs. Myers emphasizes.

If your child has an allowance or has a job that pays some money, he will have the opportunity to learn. If you dole money out to ycan: child as he requests it, he should have some freedom in the way it is to be spent and to and to be able to learn to make wise choices.

When a child first begins to handle money, limits should be set so that not enough money will be involved to make him too unhappy when he makes a mistake,in judgment. Children need to learn early in life before a poor choice or a wrong decision could become a major disaster.

Help your children to know that there are some expenditures they should make and that they have obligations to themselves and to others, Mrs. Myers suggests.
