She is a member of St. John's Catholic hurch. In school her favorite subject is English, and her hobby is swimming. bile is a member of the National honor Society, a substitute swimming instructor, and an honorary member of Industrial Arts Club in high school. She served as treasurer of the Talton CYO for two years, and recently took part in the County Youth Rodeo. She is a cathechism teacher at St. John's. Her ambition is to be an elementary school teacher.

Bennie Krpec is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Krpec, Jr., and is a sophomore in El Campo High School. Bennie is a member of the Talton Catholic Church, the Talton CYO, Future Farmers of America. Bennie is an accomplished accordion player. His favorite sport is playing tennis; in school his favorite subject is biology, and his ambition is to become a mechanical engineer.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO LINDEN HALL, ELM MOTT, THIS SUNDAY, SEPT. 19TH! "CZECHOSLOVAK SPECTACULAR"

Queen candidate to the '.tate Queen Contest at Seaton from District II, Theresa Naivar, from Lodge No. 29, Taylor, with her escort, John Stalmach, from Lodge " No. 43, Beyersville.

Queen candidate from District IV was Charlyn Urban, escorted by her brother, Doyle, both from Lodge No. 49, Rowena.

The first "Czechoslovak Spectacular" will be held at the lodge hall and premises of SPJST Lodge No. 66, Linden Hall, in Elm Mott, between Waco and West. Elm Mott is about 3 miles north of the Waco city limits. Take the Elm Mott exit off HI 35, and go onehalf mile east to Linden Hall. The date is Sunday, Sept. 19th. The afternoon program will include the big Etic Donza Band of Ennis in concert, a Sokol gymnastic exhibition by juniors and seniors from the Sokol Southern District, dancers dancing the Czechoslovak National Reseda, a promenade and presentation of authentic Czechoslovak costumes, with prizes, presentation of lccal, home-made Czechoslovak costumes, with prizes, an exhibition of Miss Agnes Houdek's Czech dolls, dressed in authentic costumes (this is really something to see!), Czech choral group singing, sausage festival (Janak of Hallettsville, Liska from Ennis, Zimmerhanzel Bros., from Taylor, Cash from West), delicious food served all day long, plenty of cold refreshments of all kinds, displays and sale of Czech LP records (Adamcik of Dallas), and a big dance in the evening (6 to 10), with music by the popular recording orchestra, Johnnie Sebetka's Polka Peppermints from Dallas.

Plenty of supervised parking near the hall. Plenty of shade trees. All attractions easily accessible. The public is cordially invited. Come and meet with your friends from all over Texas at Elm Mott on Sept. 19th!

CZECH DAY AT THE STATE FAIR Czechs throughout the State of Texas will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Czech Days at the State Fair of Texas, Oct. 10th, 1965. The attendance is expected to be the largest in the history of the Czech Days. We are receiving letters from people out of the state stating that they will come.

The program will be one of the best.

You will see Reseda Circles dancing all over the coliseum with beautiful costumes. The Sokols will have an educational exhibition so beneficial to humanity and our country. Singing groups from various communities will sing favorite songs so pleasing to the ear. The orchestra in the coliseum will be bigger and better, and there will be several orchestras playing in the Band Shell where the hun will continue with

your friends. You will have your eyes full of beautiful costumes — women, men, boys, and girls. Be sure and bring your costume.

There will be the crowning of the "Queen" and "King" of the day according to age. The oldest lady guest will be declared the "Queen" of the day, and the oldest gentlemen guest will likewise be declared the .`King" of the day. Be sure and bring the oldest citizen in your community for the contest.

You will see and hear other -surprising acts as part of the program, never to be forgotten.

Newsbriefs Mr. and Mrs. Charles Micek of Yoakum recently returned from a tour of the northern Midwest states and Canada. States visited included Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Manitoba in Canada. The Miceks travelled in their 18-ft. mobile home. They are members of SPJST Lodge No. 63, Sweet Home.

• Our readers' attention is invited to the pictures of Miss Agnes Houdek's authentic Czech dolls in this week's Czech section. This extraordinary collection of dolls will be exhibited at Elm Mott on Sept. 19th.

• • William V. Hejl, 63, passed away in King's Daughters Hospital in Temple on Sept. 1st. Interment was in Bellwood Memorial Park, Temple. Brother Hejl was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 87, Temple.

• • August Cihal, 68, passed away in Ganado on Aug. 16th. Brother Cihal was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 40, Hi11j e.

One of the very special items that will be on sale in the Czech Records booth at the "Czechoslovak Spectacular" at Elm Mott on Sept. 19 includes the complete Czech recording of Dvorak's opera, "Rusalka," recorded by artists from the National Theatre in Prague, and the National Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Jaroslav Krombholc.

LODGE NO. 66, WACO "Czechoslovak Spectacular" The following is a slightly revised and final schedule of events for the afternoon of Sept. 19th: 11:30 — Noon meal, served continuously; 12:30 — Band concert, featuring the big Eric Honza Band from Ennis 2:00 — Choral group singing 2:30 — Beseda dancers 3:00 — Promenade of costumes, authentic Czech costumes first, 'followed by home-made ones. Judges: Joe Holasek, Rev. George Bonhard, Joe Slavik 3:45 — Sokol gymnasts 4:30 — More band music 6:00 to 10:00 — Dance; Sebetka's Orch.

There will be two serving lines during the peak hours so that the anticipated crowd can be served as efficiently as possible. Sausage sales will be in bulk one-pound, three-pound, and five-pound packages. Linden Hall is completely air conditioned with refrigerated air.

Everyone get set for this great event on Sunday, Sept. 19th. In the event of inclement weather, the event will not be postponed; we will go inside with as many of the activities as possible.

FAMOUS TWIRLING INSTRUCTOR AT LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Sister Janet Moulden, director of the Jan-ettes Twirling Corps, has consented to conduct baton twirling classes at Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88. These classes are being held every Thursday from 8 to 9 p.m. at our lodge, 1435 Beall St., Houston. Students who

Sister Moulden was the Feature Twirler with the University of Texas Longhorn Band in Austin. She was also the Feature Twirler and drum majorette of the Holing High School Band and the Freeport Senior High School Band.

Sister Moulden has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas in elementary education and a minor in music; also a Master of Education degree from the University of Houston in music and education. Sister Moulden was an honor graduate of both schools, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Texas, and was selected to be in the honorary education organization, Kappa Delta Pi, at the Univertisy Of Houston.

The Jan-ettes Twirling Corps has attended the Grand Nationals three years and have placed in the top three each year, winning second place at Elkhart, Indiana, in 1960, second place at Galveston, in 1961, and third place in Jackson, Mississippi in 1963. The Jan-ettes also hold three state championship titles in both drum and baton corps and twirling teams. They have won over 100 trophies since they were organized five years ago.

This year in August the Jan-ettes Twirling Corps attended the Grand Nationals Twirling contest and convention held by the United States Twirling Association in Miami, Florida.

They returned home safe, and sound,

Wednesday, September 15, 1965 and most happy, because Sister Janet's protege, Ray Speight of Bellaire, age 9, and Texas State Juvenile Champion, placed fourth in Solo Baton in the Grand Nationals. They left on Aug. 13th and returned on Aug. 27th, hav•ng enjoyed a most interesting 15-day tour of the Southern Gulf states.

Outstanding Student Miss Carol Ann Dunn of Lake Jackson, Texas, a student of Sister Moulden, won the Senior Grand National Strutting Championship in 1960 in Elkhart, Indiana, and was the first; girl from Texas to ever hold a National Championship. She also represented Texas in the Miss America Baton Twirling Pageant in 1960. Miss Dunn also placed fifth in the nation on her twirling solo in 1960, and holds seven championship titles.

Several other students have placed in the top seven in solos and strutting at the Grand Nationals, including Miss Jackie Kelly of Bryan, Texas, Miss Fuchs and Miss Colleen Sullivan of Cypress, Texas.

Lodge Pokrok Houston No. 88 is indeed proud to have such an outstanding personality as a member and as a teacher. We wish her much success with the students and hope to see the fruits of her toil in the future.

LETTERS LODGE NO. 92, FORT WORTE Dear Members and Friends: At the last meeting it was voted to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Lodge Svaz Cechoslovanu No. 92 on Sunday, Sept. 26th, 1965.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Wayne King — 6 Weeks To Go! Dear Sisters and Brothers: , In just six short weeks we will have for the first time at our lodge the incomparable Wayne King, (his Golden Saxophone) and world-famous orchestra playing in the air-conditioned Chandelier Ballroom. The youth club of Lodge No. 88, under the direction of Wanda Eizner, has undertaken this presentation of the Wayne King Orchestra. The one big night that the King Orchestra is to appear will be Wednesday, Oct. 20th. Dancing time will be 8 to 12, with a short show given by Mr. King during the intermission. Advance reservations may be made by calling UN 2-9677. Since the seating capacity of this dance will be limited, it is requested that persons wishing to make of a reservation, come by the lodge and make advance payment for their reservations, or send check or money order (with proper name and address of person) for their reservations. Many persons injuired about the reservations during the battle dance between Al Grebnick and Lee Roy Matocha, but at that time reservations were not available. So be sure and make your reservations now and be assured of an admission ticket. All proceeds from this dance will go to the Youth Club swimming pool fund. The youth of our lodge hope the mothers and fathers will join in and help with this one big dance that they have undertaken, so funds will be available to start their swimming pool the first Part of 1965. This dance would also be a fine time for the Heights Little League mothers and fathers to help put this dance over. The swimming pool is to be built behind our lodge home and the Heights Little League players are welcome to it. Let's all get behind this Wayne King Dance and show our youth that we are willing to help by corning. Make reservations now, so you will be sure to get one.

Facts Around Lodge No. 88: Let's not forget the "Czechoslovak Spectacular" at Elm Mott, Sunday, Sept. 19th. Let's support this event, 'because much effort is being put into it. Mabel Guyton's home-made chocolate pies are so good that she is having difficulty saving slices for her many friends. Her husband, Leslie, being aware of this, is now trying to find a suitable Czech name for the chocolate pies. A Cadillac zoomed out of the Timbergrove area this past Sept. 1st, and when the BI radar picker up the speeding car some five miles north of Needville, some

What a glorious Labor Day weekend Herman Liebscher had! For some reason he couldn't get his boat in the water, he kicked sea gulls with his left foot, broke two seating chairs, and wrenched his knee slipping on a butter patty on the floor of Hillman's Restaurant. The small earth tremors you may have felt at 2:21 a.m., Sept.

6th, were only snoring shocks coming from the bay shore home of Rosalie Ruland. What was the nice recovery the lodge made when everyone was so gloomy for a while? Our good-will ambassador, Waldo Kalich, told us about J. Russell, the popular disc jockey over radio station KMSC in Clear Lake.

5th. the question was brought up if we would sponsor a bus to go to Dallas on Oat. 10th, which is the Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas. We went last Year and had a wonderful time.

We are going to get a bus again this Year to take us to Dallas on Czech Day. The price will be 4.00 per person for the round trip and we will leave Temple at the Greyhound bus station at about 6:30 or '7 a.m. and leave Dallas at about 5:30 or 6 p.m. Specific details later.

We need to know who wants to go and how many we can get. If we cannot get at least 35 people we may have to cancel the bus trip.

Please notify me if you are interested in riding the bus with our group, because at the present time we have many vacant seats.

afturaisanoc LEE ROY MATOCHA & CO. LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Sisters and Brothers, On Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29th, from 2 until 10 p.m., Lodge No. 88, Houston, had a big battle dance in which Al Grebnick from Schuyler, Nebraska battled it out with Lee Roy Matocha of Fayetteville, Texas. A vote

was taken to determine which orchestra was best. The Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra won by a wide margin and was awarded the trophy. The accompanying picture shows the Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra, with Lee Roy holding the trophy.

LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Friends, Although I am mentioning this rather late, I think our three-day Al Grebnick weekend was a huge success, and I think much credit should be given to our faithful hard worker, Louis Hanus. He hired the band and made all the arrangements with it and worked on this for months, working out all details including most of the advertising. Louis' idea of giving a trophy to the winning band at the battle dance proved to be a great drawing card! Of course, there was also much hard work done by Chairman Harley Cox and his wonderful Entertainment Committee, Sister Annie Vala and her many willing helpers, and Buddy Henske and his barbecue crew!

Due to a siege of high fever, I had to miss two weddings, both of which I especially wanted to attend, since both of the grooms were former members of our youth club when I was lodge youth leader. On Saturday, Sept. 4th, beautiful Miss Betty Jane Plasek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lathrop, and Charles Kelly, son of Estelle and Stephen Kelly and grandson of Sister Daisy Drab, were married at St. Stephen's Methodist Church with a reception at the Fellowship Hall. The bride and bridesmaids in their floorlength gowns presented a lovely picture! I am told that Estelle looked so pretty in a pale green brocade suit, and our "Miss Daisy" walked down the aisle like one of the girls. Charles was a very capable secretary of our Youth Club in 1961.

On Sunday, Sept. 5th, pretty Miss Dorothy Mae Struckmeyer, daughter of Mr. arid Mrs. Herbert Struckmeyer, and Larry Pflughaupt, son of Josephine and Leander Pflughaupt, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hilsher of Fayetteville, were married at St. Mark's Methodist Church, with a reception in the private dining room of our new lodge building. The bride and bridesmaids in their gorgeous gowns were so pretty, and so was Josephine in her lovely gown. Larry held various offices in our youth club, and participated as escort in our queen and princess contests several times and was a winner at least twice!

PATRICIA TYMRAK EXCHANGES VOWS WITH ALTON DAUGHTREY St. Matthews's Catholic Church in Jourdanton was the scene of the marriage of Patricia Jean Tymrak of Jourdanton and Alton Bryant Daughtrey of Cotulla. The ceremony took place on Saturday, Aug. 21st. Patricia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Tymarak of Jourdanton, and Alton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Daughtrey of Cotulla. The ceremony was a double ring ceremony, with a Solemn Nuptial Mass. The Rev. Wenzel Lieb officiated.

Reports DISTRICT II FALL MEETING The SPJST District II fall meeting was called to order at Camp Tahuaya, Aug. 15, 1965 at 1:30 p.m., with Brother Frank Klinkovsky, President of District II, presiding. The meeting was being held in conjunction with the Youth Activity Day. The Pledge of Allegiance was given by the assembly, and was followed by Brother Klinkovsky' welcoming the large crowd. Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.

Members were present from Lodges 3, 15, 24, 29, 47, 48, 80, 87, and 155.

Brother Klinkovsky introduced the following Supreme Lodge Officers who were present: Bro. Edward L. Marek, Bro. Joe B. Hejny, and Bro. R. A. Urbanovsky. Also present, was Bro. Jim Kucera, State Youth Director. (Incidentally, Bro. Kucera did a wonderful job of assisting Sister Emily Mikeska with the activities of the day). Bro. Marek made a short talk regarding Youth Activity Day and the wonderful progress that has been made in this field. This was followed by Bro. Henry Mares, treasurer, giving a financial report on the finances of District II. A question was raised as to why this was being considered as a fall meetingwithout appropriate advance notice. The officers of the district, after careful consideration, determined there would be no advantage in having a regularly scheduled fall meeting because it was their view that no important business was pending. Such was the case.

In discussing the date for the spring meeting, March 27, 1966, was

VESTNIK selected as the desirable date. No invitation for the meeting was extended by anyone present to hold the meeting at their respective lodge. Consequently, each lodge in the district will be contacted to see if an invitation will be extended for March 27. If not, March 13 will be considered for the meeting.

Sister Emily Mikeska, District II Youth Director, discussed the activities carried out by the youths in the morning, and the activities to follow In the afternoon.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:15 p.m.

Youth LODGE NO. 73, SEYMOUR Dear Readers: Saturday, the 21st of August, our lodge went to Six Flags. We had an enjoyable day. Last week our school started, so I will be busy with home'work. Before school started our family went to Caldwell to visit my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Marek. Last Sunday I went to the State Talent Contest in Seaton, but I did not win anything. There was a large crowd and a lot of good talent at the meeting. This Sunday we had our lodge meeting but most of the youth Were absent.

It really is hot and dry here; hope it will cool off soon. I have to finish some painting so I will have to sign off.

LODGE NO. 73, SEYMOUR Dear Readers: Lots of things happened since I 'wrote last. Last Sunday we had our lodge meeting. We had lots of fun. In August we all went to Six Flags for one day and everybody enjoyed it.

In 4-H I made a dress this summer for our Dress Revue. In my group I made the highest score and got money

as the prize, a necklace and blue ribbon.

We went to Bryan and Caldwell when my grandmother was sick, so mother and I stayed in Bryan one week. My parents and I went back to see grandmother after she came home, and also attended the State Talent meeting at Seaton.

School has started so I will be busy with home work and I will take piano lessons again.

I have to get ready for school in the morning, so I will say bye.

The teachers are all pretty nice but the subjects are all hard. Last Friday we had our first football game. The Caldwell Hornets got beat by the Taylor Ducks 38 to 6.

Next week we go to Giddings. I plan to go on the pep quad bus.

Saturday our Youth Club had a bake sale. Everyone brought something. We made a lot of money.

Homemaking is about my best subject. Because you learn about food and how to cook and sew. English II is pretty good, but I don't like to read short stories too much. Geometry and world history are the hardest subjects I have.

Wednesday, September 15, 1965 LODGE NO. 30, TAITON The Talton SPJST Youth Club Lodge No. 30 held their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 1st, at 4:30 p.m., with 23 members present.

Monica Merta opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Madilyn Merta read the prayer.

Secretary Donna Srubar called the roll of the members and read the minutes of the last meeting.

Treasurer Kenneth Mrnustik gave the treasurer's report.

Unifnished business concerned Susan use winning State Queen and Bennie Krpec winning second place in the State Talent Contest with his accordion.

New business concerned the giving away of the quilt on Saturday, Nov. 27th.

The visitors were Mrs. Jerome Dorotik, Mrs. Alvin Kahanek, Mrs. J. W. Krutilek, Mrs. Sil Dluhos.

Mothers present were Mrs. J. W. Krutilek, Mrs. Pete Merta Jr., Mrs. Cyril Mrnustik, Mrs. Alvin Kahanek, Mrs. Sil Dluhos, Mrs. Jerome Dorotik.

Those having birthdays in September were honored with a cake.

Door prize winners were Anita Krpec, and Clarence Kahanek.

YOUTH CLUB, LODGE 25, ENNIS Dear Readers, Lodges 25, 82, 154, and 130 went on a bus tour on Aug. 18th and 19th. We stopped at West, Waco, Temple, Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio.

In West, we visited the Cechoslovak Pub. Co. We had to change buses in Waco because the airconditioning system had broken down. Our next stop was the Supreme Lodge in Temple, where we received pens and money purses (without the money, unfortunately). Don Hejny from Temple joined us for the rest of the tour.

Then we stopped in Austin to visit the Capitol and surrounding buildings. We stopped at San Marcos to visit the Aquarena., where we rode the gloss-bottom boats and went to the under water show.

Our last stop before turning back was San Antonio, where we ate supper at a Mexican restaurant and enjoyed the boat rides on the beautiful San Antonio River. We spent the night at the Bluebonnet Hotel.

Wednesday, September 15, 1965 In the morning we visited the Alamo and the Hall of Horns. On the way home we stopped at the LBJ ranch.

It was a very nice trip and we all enjoyed it. We are all looking forward to next year.

Mrs. Mikeska came to help us organize our Youth Club. The meeting was started with Mrs. Mikeska reading some special things about how to organize our Youth Club and how meetings should be held, and the duties of the officers.

NECROLOGY

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY In behalf of the members of Lodge Volna Cechie, No. 135, at Ennis, Texas, we, the Resolution Committee, express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, JERRY HOUDEK, who passed away on Sept. 1, 1765, in a hospital at LaCenter, Washington.

He is survived by his wife, one son, and two daughters: Jerry Houdek of Ennis, Mrs. Frank Mikula of Ennis, and Mrs. Glenn Johnson of Los Angeles. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Bob Zazvorka of Ennis, and Miss Bessie Houdek of Mexia.

ROSIE KOTRLA,

Brother Wentrcek was born on Nov. 28th in Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States at the age of 10. He had been a resident of Atascosa County since 1924. He was a well-known retired farmer, a member of the Lutheran Church, and the SPJST. Brother Hejl was born in the Cyclone community and lived in Bell County all of his life. He was a life-

14 long member of the Seaton Brethren Church. He was employed at the Blue Bonnet Produce Company for many years after selling his farm and moving to Temple. Brother Heil was a member of the SPJST for 47 years, and at death was a member of Lodge Hvezda Svobody 87, Temple.

Brother Hejl is survived by his wife; two sons, Wilton Hejl of Dallas and William Heji of Temple; a daughter, Mrs. Jim Allison of Buckholts; one sister, Mrs. W. A. Zabcik of Zabcikville; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son.

V 'ESTNfl< $99,300,000 IN DEATH PAYMENTS, MADE IN TEXAS DURING FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 1065 Texas families received $99,300,000 in death payments on their life insurance during the first half of 1965, according to the Institute of Life Insurance. This was an increase of $600,000 or 1 per cent over the same period last year.

Inc total has climbed 154 per cent since ten years ago.

Blake T. Newton, Jr., president of the Institute, explained that the rise in death benefit payments reflects the great increase in life insurance protection owned by American families.

Death payments throughout the United States ran 115 per cent higher during the first half of 1965 than in the same period ten years ago, even though the mortality rate among policyholders generally has shown little change. Life insurance in force in the United States has risen 140 per cent during the p ast decade.

Death payments were made on a total of 41,400 policies in Texas during the first half of 1965, compared with 41,000 in the same period last year. The 1965 death payments included $55,700,000 under 14,700 ordinary policies; $37,600,000 under 14,000 group certificates, and $6,000,000 under 12,700 industrial policies.

For the nation as a whole, death payments totaled $2,293,400,000 under 1,281,500 policies during the first half of 1965, compared with $2,283,600,000 under 1,234,600 policies in the same p eriod last year. The 1965 figure includes $1,293,400,000 under 398,500 ordinary policies; $892,200,000 under 320,900 group certificates; and $207,800,009 under 562,100 industrial policies.

TRAFFIC HEAT PAYMENTS RISE 18 PER CENT IN 1965 Both the dollar amount and number of life insurance death payments due to motor vehicle accidents rose sharply during the first half of 1965, even though the nation's traffic death rate was slightly lower than in the first half of 1964.

The figures indicate that a larger proportion of the 1965 traffic victims had life insurance protection.

The Institute of Life Insurance reported that this year's traffic death payments totaled $117 million, an increase of $18 million or 18 per cent over the first half of 1964. By comparison, total death payments from all causes rose less than 1 per cent.

The 1995 total included 1,470 companies owned by stockholders and 154 mutual companies. The 1964 total included 1,379 stock companies and 155 mutual companies. .However, the Mutual companies, owned by their policyholders, are generally older and larger than stock companies, and account for about 60 per cent of the insurance in force.

The number of life companies has increased by 565 during the past decade, with many now companies based in western, midwestern and southern states. The biggest recent increases were in Arizona, Missouri, Illinois, and Oklahoma.

Every state has at least two life companies. Twenty-six states have 20 or more companies. Te:as, with 248 home-based companies, continues to have the largest number, although Texas' total has recently been declining. Arizona, with 142 companies, and Louisiana, with 112 rank next highest.

But New York, New Jersey and Connecticut companies have more life insurance in force than those based in other states.

Life companies' borne offices are located in 381 nities, led by Dallas, with 119; Phoenix, with 81; Houston, 53; York, 44.

Chicago, 49. and_s Newv'r_ WATER POLLUTION KILLS MILLIONS OF FISH IN 1964 More fish were killed by pollution in 1964 than in any previous year reported, according to a recent report from the U. S. Department of Health.

Industrial pollution accounted for the largest number killed. Municipal waste and toxic substances from agricultural operations f011Owed in second and third place. Fish kills are doubly significant in water pollution control.

Wednesday, September 15, 1965 Fish themselves are a unique and valuable recreation and economic resource. Possibly more important, the occurrence of a kill often signals a hazard affecting other users of the water and endangering public health.

Although the 1964 total, an estimated 18,387,000, was larger than ever before reported, it is highly unlikely that it represents more than a sampling of the kills that actually occurred.

This is due to differing reporting procedures followed by various states and to obvious difficulties involved in monitoring the country's thousands of miles of fresh water streams and millions of acres of lakes and marine waters.

Kills may occur from a sudden and deadly change in an aquatic environment. With time, the stream will usually recover and the fish population return.

Water pollution exerts its greatest tool on a fish population, not by causing individual kills, but by destroying the natural habitat.. Serious fish kills seldom oechr in badly polluted water, simply because they are usually few, or no fish in the stream or lake to die.

BIT/N' FISH COMPETE FOP SPORTS' EYE Fresh water fishing folks around the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department headquarters affect at least slightly boredom from the mighty hunting season opening hubbub.

They really don't go around yawning and all that, but they don't mind saying that somebody may be overlooking a mighty good proposition from an angling viewpoint.

In fact, Marion Toole, inland fisheries coordinator, said that the summer fishing slump is about over and the really good fishing is just about ready to happen when everybody's hustling around with a hot gun barrel instead Of a potent fishing pole.

Seasonal change has something to do with the improved prospects, said Toole, but the fish nowadays are getting hungry "for anything thrown at them." This is because their diet of small fish has been disturbed by the small fish growing up, becoming more elusive and also getting too big for anything but the lunkers to swallow.

Therefore the fish are foraging for new food. And that's where the fisherman comes into the picture.

What kind of bait?

Well, there's nothing better than live bait, according to Toole.

VESTN't K He rates the bait in this order: Plain earth worms; Live minnows; Hardware, or artificial baits.

Yes, the moss and other surface weed growth still are a problem. But Toole suggested finding on open area in the aquatic masses to drop a line.

And, then managed one of those "Youcan't-miss" smiles as a clincher.

Dead-Eye Ad Although many have tried, no man In history has ever equaled the marksmanship of a quiet Texan named Ad Toepperwein.

During a ten-day marathon rifleshooting exhibition at San Antonio in 1907, he fired 72,500 times at 2 1/4 inch wood blocks tossed into the air by aides. He missed only nine!

Born in Boerne, Kendell County, in 1869, Toepperwein was shooting ducks on the wing with a .22 rifle by the time he was five. By the time he was 20, he was appearing in vaudeville as the original "Dead-Eye Dick." He died in 1962.

VESTNIK WATER DEATH TOLL DROPS Water recreoition totalities the last two weeks slumped to the lowest level since they were first tabulated in early April by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Only eight persons perished. Six of these were from swimming accidents and none involved boats. This ran the season's total to 130, as recorded by the Department.

One fisherman, with a history of heart attacks drowned. A boy swimmer apparently suffered a seizure and died in the water.

J. B. Phillips, Department coordinator for law enforcement, said the dramatic change in boating discipline could be traced to the previous emphasis on that ma j or cause of water sports deaths.

In the last toll of 18 listed two weeks ago, four of the five victims were involved in boating tragedies.

"The shock from hearing about these needless deaths could well have had a sobering affect on boaters, and it certainly could have justified the periodic tabulation of fatalities by the Department," said Phillips.

"Of course, our sole interest in the educational routine has been to back up our game wardens on the scene who are called upon to help out when so many people patronize our lakes and streams."

Phillips said several rescues were reported by wardens. Typical was the escape of a Lake Worth water skiier who sank in twelve feet of water while trying to save equipment from a sunken boat. A companion dived for him and took him to shore where he was revived.

You remember that in your study of English, that pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns.

1. Personal: ja, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my, and vy.

2. Possessive: mid, tvfij, jeho, jeji nag, vas, etc.

3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono.

4. Interrogative: kde? co? kterY? jakY? ei?

5. Relative: kterY, jeni (who, which, that . .), kdo, co.

6. Indefinite: Nekdo, nekterY, nejakY, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns kaidY, v gcchen, sam, sama, samo, tYi, tai, tei, the latter all expressing identity.

7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, iadnjr.

1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms — mne, mne, tebe, tobe are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms — mi, me, to ti are — used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word. psal mi zna§ me? on mi psal ty mne znag?

There is a special REFLEXIVE pronoun, SE for all 3 persons, singular and plural. EX.: Ja„ se mY ji. On se mYje. My se mYjeme.

(Let us note here an important spelling rule: When the masculine sex ONLY is involved, the pronoun is oni.

When both sexes are involved, the pronon is still oni. When only the female sex is involved, the pronoun is ONY. Modifying adjectives and verbs must agree with these endings. Ex.: 2eny donesly; Chlapi donesli; fg ichni (both sexes) donesli.)

2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is unij (ma, me) and plural: na g . For the 2nd person singular, it is tviij (tva, tve) — plural vas (va ge). For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine, it is jeji; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable.

3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder), that one). The gender of course, determines which you use.

4 Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kYin; co iieho, eemu, o eem, eim? pro co, proe, nae, zae.

Ktery, jakY — the distinction between these 2 is not always strictly observed.

5. Relative pronouns: Kdo — he who.

Co — that which Dojderne k tomu, o eem jsem ehtel mluvit. Co is also used colloquially, as is: Od to doby, co. . .; Lidi, co tam byli. .

Jeni is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "kterSi — instead of mui, jehoi znam, we say mui, ktereho znam.

6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nektery nejakY, nekde, flatly; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, ei-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jakjrkoli, kterYkoli; also the prefix lee: leckdo.

Kaic13'7 may be used only with countable objects; fgechen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v gichni does duty for both counta.bles and uncountables.

Ex.: kaidY olovek, kaida iena, kaide devee. fgichni lide, fgechny ieny, fgechny chleby, vSechna deveata.

Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam.

SamY, sama„ same, are used to express an idea of fullness or richness: stromy byly sam kvet: byli tam sami cizinci; na samem konci; u sameho okna.

7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni — is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kterY, jakky, the negative pronoun iadnIti is used before nouns: iadnSr elovek, iadna, iena, etc.
