THINK IT OVER . . .

It was here with us for a while, but then it abruptly disappeared again.

I'm talking about what appeared to be spring, of course. This must be the last dying gasp of Ole' Man Winter's wrath.

Spring must be just around the corner — at least, the calendar says March 20th (last Saturday) was the first day of spring.

• • We are living in an age of realism — in a time when men and women, both young and old, are becoming more practical in facing the duties and conduct of life's responsibilities. Foremost among these realities, and the chief concern of the family group, the basic unit of our American society, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, is to provide for dependent ones. In order to do this, we try hard to accumulate resources that may be used in emergencies of life, and to make provision in the event of being stricken and/or totally disabled. ♦ • These desirable and essential ends may be achieved through SPJST Ordinary Life Certificates, Twenty Payment Life Certificates, Endowment Certificates, and other excellent plans issioed by the SPJST. These certificates, broad in their coverage, practical in their application, and sound in their saving features, serve well in helping mm and women who recognize, bar-

Multitudes flocked to Bayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had displaced argued angrily that he was no composer at all.

The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the banks of the Hudson to watch.

Wiseacre competitors waggled their heads with mock sadness when Henry Ford announced that he was going to build a $500 automobile.

This has always been the penalty attached to leadership, whether it be in the field of science, art, invention or business; whether it be a great idea, a great work of art, or a product. The widespread recognition from the world at large is almost invariably accom panied by fierce attempts on the part of a jealous few to suppress, depreciate, or destroy. ring war and taxation, the serious obligation they owe to themselves and to their families. such men and women are concerned with the future and provide for the future in this realistic age.

In the old days it was not easy to sell life insurance, because people had to be convinced that life insurance was all that it claimed it was. There were no sales techniques or advertising as we have today, with all the media of communication. The SPJST has succeeded, to a very large degree, in getting itself before the public, and being accepted by the public. There are still areas where communications can be improved. We are becoming known as a friendly, capable organization, that has built its reputation on 67 years of honest dealings and sound insurance plans. This quality service is in the tradition of the SPJST, and is our trademark in doing business. In addition to "Brotherhood, Benevolence, and Humanity," security and happiness are our main by-products. What we have to offer gives the insured and his dependents that inward sense of security and well-being. Protect yourself against the uncertainties of life; join the SPJST. if you are a non-member and find yourself reading these lines, contact the person to whom this issue was sent. The address label is on the front. If you're already a member, it might be wise to make a "timely reappraisal" of what your insurance needs are at this time.

Others still write to us here in West to change a member's address, or want us to put so-and-so on the mailing list. Too many still do not realize that, like any and all newspapers, we MUST have a deadline. For years and years now, that deadline has been Saturday noon. People get a little perturbed when their material doesn't get in, which is rare. We rarely hold over anything from one issue to the next. Too many people wait until too late in the week to send in their contribution. This places an extra burden on your editor and on the printshop personnel on Saturday morning, If an avalanche of mail arrives on Saturday morning, we obviously' can't be as meticulous with it as we might otherwise be. Mistakes are more apt to occur in the rush to beat the deadline. If you start cheating on deadlines, you upset the entire publishing schedule, since everything is timed rather closely.

Some contributors send in their material on what appears to be the last piece of writing material on earth.

They crowd their lines and, to make matters worse, write on both sides of the page. Deciphering is difficult and is time-consuming. Remember, when your material takes more time to work up than it should, you are depriving someone else of that precious "equal time." There is just so much time in which to prepare all the material for publication. e TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Your editor will be attending to an important community function on Sunday, June 20th, here in West. Consequently, it will be difficult to accept any invitations elsewhere on that date.

A survey of the nation's older widows indicates that life insurance is an increasingly important factor in a woman's standard of living after her husband's death.

The sampling of widows aged 65 and older was conducted by an independent research organization and sponsored by the Institute of Life Insurance.

It showed that life insurance coverage has been widening rapidly in recent years. Only 63 per cent of the husbands who died in 1961 or earlier had life insurance, while 80 per cent of those who died in 1960 or later were covered. Among all the widows, 71 percent of their husbands had life insurance.

Wednesday, March 24, 1965 Coverage was much wider among younger husbands than older ones. Of those who died younger than 50 years of age, 34 per cent had life insurance, compared with 59 per cent of those who died older than age 65.

Among widows who consider their current standard of living better than average, only 3 per cent of their husbands were uninsured. Over 83 per cent had $5,000 or more of protection.

Among widows who rate their own standard of living below average, 97-, per cent of their husbands had less than $5,000 of protection. About 28 per-, cent had no life insurance at all.

Of the widows whose husbands were insured, nearly nine out of ten said life insurance was an important factor in helping them get by after their husbands died. Two out Of three said life insurance was "very important" or "of utmost importance."

Following are some of the ways in which they used their husbands' life insurance: —74 per cent of the widows used it to pay last expenses, such as medical bills, funeral costs, and so an.

—49 per cent used the money to live on.

—41 per cent invested or saved some or all of the money.

—17 per cent used it for their children's education.

—9 per cent used it to pay off the mortgage on their home.

Many of the husbands acquired their life insurance decades ago, before the vast improvement in coverage in recent years, and they often did not have enough protection to enable their widows to live comfortably. Little more than one-third of the insured husbands had $5,000 or more of protection.

Less than half had $3,000 or more.

This was in sharp contrast with today's insured husbands, half of whom have over $6,000 of life insurance. And the mean average of their coverage has climbed to over $10,000.

The relatively lower amounts of life insurance among husbands in the survey may be an important reason why one-fourth of the widows said their standard of living declined after their husbands died. Only 3 per cent said their living standard improved.

Among those whose husbands were insured, 84 per cent of the widows received all of the life insurance proceeds and 12 per cent received part. About 13 per cent received at least some of the proceeds in the form of monthly payments, rather than in a lump sum.

But less than one-third were over 65.

'Three-fourths were still actively working at the time of their death.

In addition to any life insurance proceeds, 78 per cent of the widows also received Social FSecurity or Railroad Retirement payments or expected to receive them in the future. And 24 per cent were receiving retirement pensions from employers, unions or civil service, or expected to get them in the future.

The widows' average income from all sources during the preceding year was between $1,000 and $2,000. Only 11 per cent of them received $5,000 or more.

• • ABOUT WEDDING PICTURES It has been the policy of the Vestnik that we charge for publishing wedding and engagement pictures of SPJST MEMBERS. The reasons for this are obvious. Charges will cover the cost of having a cut made, plus postage. The cost will depend upon the size, but will range from about $1.90 for a small onecolumn picture, to around $6.50 for a much larger picture.T hese will be pub lished on a low-priority basis, when

there is sufficient space available.

To accompany such pictures, the sender should always indicate which SPJST lodge he or she is a member of, and the writeup should have an "SPJST slant."

Newsbnefs Paul Sablatura, member of SPJST Lodge No. 40, Hillje, and one of the directors of the SPJST Rest Home, was awarded the "Man of the Year" award by the Louise Chamber of Commerce, at a banquet held recently at the Hillje ;SPJST hall. The banquet was attended by several notables from around the South Texas area. Brother Sablatura is president of the Louise C of C. • • Lodge No. 47, Seaton, is letting the local Red Cross chapter use their hall free of charge for their annual Red Cross Supper, in an effort to raise funds for that organization.

• Lodge Slovansky Svaz No. 86, Temple, has disbanded. Members have joined other area lodges, including Lodge No. 87, and 47, Seaton, and 24, Cyclone.

• • An $80,000 nursing home was opened and dedicated in LSmithville on March 21st. The home consists of 15 rooms and has a resident capacity of 27.

LETTERS LODGE NO. 58, HUNGERFORD Dear Brothers and Eiisters, You are all invited to attend a luncheon honoring one of our older, retired workers, Brother Ostoja Muniza.

He served his lodge faithfully over 54 years. The luncheon will take place at 5 p.m., March 28, at the Hungerford Hally. LODGE NO. 35, ELK Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our regular March meeting was held on the first Sunday of the month, instead of the second Sunday, because the District III meeting was held on that date. Quite a number from Elk attended the district meeting.

A number of us from Elk traveled to Houston for their Grand Opening: Mr. and Mrs. Antone Pavelka, president of Lodge 35, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Holub, organizer, and yours truly and my husband. We thoroughly enjoyed staying there. You have to see the new hall to really appreciate it. Our Youth Leader, Sister Ruby Pavelka, announced that she has a new assistant in the person of Mrs. Margaret Jackson.

A vote was taken whether to put up insulation siding on the building, or whether to paint the building. It was decided to paint the building white.

A new propane tank was installed.

Those who installed the tank were Rudolph Vicha, Vernon Wood, Charlie Pavelka, Jean Edward Pavelka, and Freddie Kubitza, Thanks for a job well done!

Our next meeting will be held April 11. We will be looking forward to seeing everyone. Ladies, bring a covered dish that will go well with country sausage and ring bologna. 13ring along something sweet, too.

Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was led by the Flag Bearer, Chris Spence.

A tribute of a minute of silence was observed for the deceased members and especially for Mr. Joe Milan, a prominent member of Lodge 154.

Greetings of welcome were extended

by Vice-President Jerry Milan who is also the President of Lodge No. 154.

Words of response were added by Third District 2nd Vice-President, Rudolph Zalman.

Roll Call was made by Secretary Mildred Baleja, showing ten lodges had representatives present, nine lodges did not.

The minutes were read and approved. Correspondence was then read, including a letter of resignation from the DiIstria Three Youth Director, Inez Zalman.

Sister Mary Renfro, the District Treasurer, gave a complete report which showed a balance of $1,706.84.

Arnold Vrla made a motion that the report be accepted as read. Motion carried.

6 ficers were made by the president, followed by the introduction of the Supreme Lodge C.Dieers present. Supreme Lodge Youth Director Jim Kucera was introduced, followed by Supreme Lodge Secretary R. A. Urbanovsky, and ;Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek, who extended greetings from the Supreme Lodge Officers who could not be present.

Past Third District Director, Robert Cervenka, was recognized.

President Jarma then gave recogniion to Fast Presidents of the Third' District, Queen of the Third District Carol Nesuda, Editor Nick Morris, and to visitors from District. Two. Next on the agenda came the committee reports. Youth Director Inez Zalman not being able to be at the meeting sent a copy of the minutes of the meeting held by the Youth Directors cif the state in Temple. These minutes were read by the secretary.

Brother Arnold Vrla, District Organizer, explained briefly some of the newer plans of insurance now being offered by the organization. He introduced organizers who sold over $25,000, $50,00-0 and $75.000 of insurance. Top organizer of over $100,000 was Sister Anna Milan who was recognized by the members. Brother Vrla announced the quota for 1965, and although quite high felt it could be made and injected the slogan "Come Alive in '65."

Brother Cyrill Pokladnik as Third District Rest Home Director, reported that the Rest Home was progressing nicely and the manager is .doing a fine job. In his report as Third District Director, Brother Pokladnik reported that he had attended a meeting at the Supreme Lodge and learned of the large task of running our organization, and stated he is willing to ,do all he can in perlforming his duties and will aid the members in every way that he can.

President Ben Jarma recognized Sister Anna Hosek. wife of the former Editor of the Vestnik.

Brother Nick Morris, Editor of the Vestnik, was called on to express himself at this meeting. He reported that from his observations he felt that the youth activities were really catching fire and he believed that they would certainly spread. .He elaborated on the making of awards to outstanding members for their work in the lodge. He suggested having a brother of the year and a sister of the year.

At 11:48 a.m. Brother Pokladnik made a motion to adjourn for lunch and return at 1:30 p.m. Motion carried.

The Youth of Lodge 154 treated the audience to a program of songs, pantomines, and musical numbers. These talented youth were introduced to the audience by Brother Jerry Milan.

Brother Jerry Milan was called upon to read a letter he had received from Congressman Jim Wright in which Congressman Wright sent his regrets from Washington , D. C. that he was not able to be at our meeting to speak as had been planned due to the illness of his wife who entered the hospital that day. He asked that he might be given an opportunity to speak at another time.

Supreme Lodge Youth Director Jim Kucera made an address in Czech and English praising the youth and asking !for continued support and cooperation of the youth and youth leaders.

He then presented Kathy Vrla a check for being the 1964 state winner in the Merit Point System Contest. Kathy Vrla was also presented a trophy for being the 1964 state winner in the Merit Record Book Contest.

Youth Leaders from all the lodges were asked to stand and were given a round of applause for a job well done.

Under unfinished business Brother Pokladnik read from the by-laws of the organization the rules pertaining to the election of the District Director and explained how the matter is handled in the event Of a vacancy.

Under new business a motion was made by Arnold Vrla that the District allow $350.00 to be used for Youth Activity Day. Motion carried. Brother Alvin Nesuda made a motion that the 2nd Sunday of July be set as the date for the Youth. Activity Day for this year only, so as not to interfere with with plans that have been made by some Of the youth to participate in another activity. Motion carried.

Brother Alvin Nestrda, presented as a motion the slate of officers that were recommended by the nominating committee to serve for the next term, as officers for the Third District. The

slate was as follows: President — Jerry Milan 1st Vice Pres. — Rudolph Zalman 2nd Vice-Pres. — Albert Kubala Secretary — Nick Morris Treasurer — Roman Parma, Jr. Flag Bearer — Johnny Pokladnik District Youth Director Carol Nesuda Brother Arnold Vrla made a second to the above motion and the motion passed.

Supreme Lodge President, Edward L. Marek, presided at the installation of the new officers who will take office at the next session.

The next order of business was the selection of the meeting place for the Youth Activity Day. Lodges making a bid fox the site were Lodges 66, 84, and 54. Lodge 54 in West was voted to be the site of the Youth Activity Day. Lodges 92, and 60 made a bid for the site of the fall meeting of the Third District. Lodge 92 in Fort Worth received the majority vote.

President Ben Jarma thanked Lodge 154 members and their president, Jerry Milan, for their gracious hospitality and good food. He thanked the fiftyyear members for their presence. He announced that immediately after the adjournment that there would be entertainment by a band from West.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:08 p.m.

VESTNfK LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON "BLUIMES CAME" Dear Sisters and Brothers: The Blume Orchestra of La Grange invaded the famous chandelier ballroom of Lodge 88 March 13th and played to a large crowd. Leslie Blume the emcee of the orchestra made a big hit with his modern and Czech music.

His mixture of Dixieland music, polkas and waltzes was the key to his versatile balanced orchestra. Gus Lindemann, one of his talented trumpet players, made his debut under the watchful eye of our member, Carl Lindemann. The orchestra was very pleased and enjoyed the special airconditioned stage for the members of the band.

This coming Sunday, March 28th, District Five will have their spring meeting. A delicious sausage dinner will be served. A youth program will be held in the afternoon and the famed Lee Roy Matocha Orchestra of Fayetteville will play, starting at 6 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m.

A nice "thanks" to the many members who have been coming to our lodge, especially on Sunday afternoons, and supporting it during Lent, , FACTS AROUND LODGE NO. 88 — Who is Maxine Manning giving the dance rain checks to? Did the members know that new member Bud Langley is noted for his acting ability on the stage? Fern Lyons, while dancing, seems to meet the whole world smiling, and husband Squatty Lyons is always friendly, generous, and good natured.

Glad to see Lona and J. D. Young having a good time at the dance, but not so glad last week when J. D. bowled a 233 and beat the team I play on.

Wilma and Billie Wallace had a wonderful time meeting many of their old friends at the new lodge. The next time Wallace Manning (past president of the Timbergrove Manor Civic Club) flips a coin for a good dancing partner, he had better bring his glasses along to be sure he didn't lose. John and Tolita Hilsher and Pearl and Judge Ernest Hanka are thinking seriously about opening a breakfast catering company. Egon Tietjen and wife Marian from Schulenburg, paid us a visit to the last dance and left us as OUT true and noble friends long to be remembered. Who was the converted blonde who came to the dance late with laughter on her lips and a smile in her eyes? Did you know that some 105 members attended the last monthly meeting? Leslie Guyton might be appointed as the new good-will

ambassador of our lodge. Thanks to the dine praise about our lodge from our new members, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hassebrock. Many persons were shocked to hear about the dance posters being torn down in the lodge lobby.

We are still wondering why . . . Our good friend and member, Kervin Jacob, who owns Jake's Egg Company, made a long distance trip to Carmine, Texas, so the eggs would be fresh for John Hilsher's breakfast party. Harry Rice a member of the Board of Trustees, and Ed Kadlecek, and Jerry Shank, were elected by the membership assembly to work out the details for the lodge's special club.

In just two weeks your lodge will begin their social night which will be held every Thursday from 8 to 10:30 p.m. There will be free soda pop and cookies for the children, as well as free coffee. So be sure and plan for every Thursday night. The starting date for the Thursday night socials for the membership and their guests will be April 8th. Do plan to come and support your lodge. LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Friends, For the past two months I have been neglecting my lodge because I had a dear niece, Mrs. Marie Suler Hochman of Rosenberg. here in a Houston hospital. She was very ill with cancer, and those of •ns close to her saw that someone was with her all the time.

Marie passed away Tuesday morning, March 16th, at 4:50 o'clock, She was the daughter of the late Mrs. 1VIlary Suler and Mr. Julius Suler of Richmond. She is survived by her husband, Abraham Hochman of Rosenberg, six children, Joe, Mary Kay, Harley, Stephen, Eileen and Andrea; her father, her brother, Frank Suler of Houston, and her grandmother, Mrs. Frank Krejci of Weimar. The funeral service was held at the Triska Funeral Home in Rosenberg, and she was laid to rest beside her mother and her brother in the Richmond Cemetery.

Marie was a member of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville.

For eight weeks we were at her bedside, and that is when we fully realized how wonderful Marie reall y was. She could be in pain, but she would still smile and say "thank you" for every little thing done for her. And there was sa little we could do for her, but she let us know what it meant to her to have us there. In her suffering, Marie was concerned about the comfort of others! The nurses said she was a model patient, and they loved her for her sweet, gentle ways.

Marie is gone from our midst, but not from our thoughts, and she will never be forgotten. I think the rest feel like Viola and I do — that our lives are richer for having known someone like Marie!

NO. 48, BEYERSVILLE Dear Members and Friends, We wish to take this opportunity to express our congratulations to Lodge 47 at Seaton Hall for an excellent day of events and entertainment at our District II Meeting Sunday, Feb. 28th. I'm sure all present had an informative and enjoyable day.

Our lodge was fairly well represented at the District II Meeting. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Stalmach, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Shiller and family, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Hejl, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Batla, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Turek and son, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gensler, and several others.

Sunday, March 7th, our monthly meeting was called to order by President B. C. Stalmach. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read.

Miss Sharon Shiller, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Shiller, was selected our May Fete Queen.

Miss Ginger Shiller, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Shiller. is our princess.

Congratulations to both of these fine young ladies, and we will assist them in every way possible in preparing for the May Fete.

Just another reminder that our May Fete will be held May 16th. Music will be furnished by the Vrazel Polka Band. Festivities will start at 5:30 p.m.

It was decided to do something about the appearance of the interior of our building. A committee composed of Mr. Charlie Brinkmeyer, Mrs. Gilbert Shiller and Mrs. Richard Batla was selected to obtain curtains. I'm sure this will improve the overall appearance of our lodge and create a more enjoyable atmosphere at our social events.

Important to all members is the fact that April 4th at 2 p.m., has been set for our Easter Egg Hunt and family get-together. Members are asked to bring sandwiches, cakes, cookies, etc., for this occasion. Since this day is the time for our regular monthly meeting, the meeting will be held first, with the other events to follow.

We hope to have several stag barbecues later on this summer and we are also going to have domino games scheduled. No dates have been set for these events as of now. As soon as dates are decided I will advise you.

Our attendance is somewhat improved but there are still many others we would like to see join us. If we can get more of us interested, in the very

VESTNfK near future, we can begin more activities which will be enjoyable to all. It's hard for just a few to have a good time, and let's not forget, the more members we have present at our meetings, the more ideas and suggestions we can get to further improve our lodge. All members please try to be present. All we can do is ask you to attend — the rest is up to you.

We would like to see more of our elder members attend, and also our teenagers. We can't have a Youth Club unless we have the youth present to organize one. Parents, urge them to attend the meetings!

We wish to thank Mr. Eugene Greenless for readying our ball for each of our meetings. Also, our thanks to Mr. Charlie Brinkmeyer for keeping our property clean of rubbish and broken glass.

Happy birthday greetings are sent out to Wanda. Wiesner and Jeanette Batla, Mrs. John Matoska, Sr., was honored on her 70th birthday 'S'unday, March 7th, with a barbecue and family ;gathering. Our sincerest best wishes to her.

Mr. John Matoska Sr., born in Nanceville, Texas, in Austin County, in 1889, is to be congratulated for his 50 years' service in the SPJST. He was to receive his pin at the District II meeting, Feb. 28th, but was unable to attend because of illness.

Brothers and sisters, we will hold a general cleaning of our lodge hall on Thursday night, March 25th. All of you are welcome to come and help with the washing, waxing, and painting. So come equipped with rags, brushes, mops, buckets, etc. After work, we shall have refreshments. Your help will be appreciated.

The District II meeting held at our lodge hall was a huge success. I do believe this meeting had the largest attendance of any held thus far. We wish to thank you for your attendance and support. The kitchen committee wishes to thank all sisters who brought the good kolaches, cakes, and pies that put the finishing touch to the good sausage plates. We received so many compliments on the good food. Also, thanks to all of you who helped in any way in the kitchen, serving line, selling plates, cleaning tables or helping back of the bar. Your help was certainly appreciated. The youth deserve a word of thanks for the good talent contest that entertained the audience. I am thankful I was not a judge because they had a huge job cut out for them in each category.

Our April 4th meeting will be special, because all of the members we have gained since the opening of our new lodge hall are being notified by card to be present at the meeting.

We have gained about 100 members in the twenty months, which is really

good, although we lose a great number as their policies are paid out. An Easter program and an Easter egg hunt will, also, be held with Sister Vlasta Divis in charge. A social is being planned after the meeting, with the new members as special guests.

We are asking the lodge sisters to bring either of the following: sandwiches, kolaches, cakes, doughnuts, pies, etc. It will be up to the old members to bring a little more so we will have enough food for all. We are hosting these new members in appreciation of their membership at our lodge. Hope to see many of you at this important meeting of the year.

CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Vestnik Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 56 held their' second meeting on February 14.

The meeting was opened by our President Machael Majek and followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. George Ann Peters, our secretary, read, the minutes of the last meeting. Then a treasurer's report was given by Mary Ann Hermis.

Mary Ann announced that we got $25 dollars from the SPJST. We all thank them very much. Then we elected officers for the entertainment and refreshment committees. We voted for Don Hansen, Juanita Foster, and Mary Stefek for our entertainment committee. On our refreshment committee is Jimmy Kucera, Martha Stefek, and Linda Ryhard.

We then discussed our money-making project. We are selling candy to raise money for our club. We have prizes for the ones who sell the most candy: first prize is $1.00; second, 50c and third 25c.

Birthdays for the month of February were Randy Sijansky, Josie Stefek, and Andrew Kucera. We then had a door prize drawing, and Heidi Spencer and Andrew Kucera won the door prizes.

We had 33 members and nine visitors present. After we collected our dues we adjourned our meeting.

Following the meeting we had delicious refreshments and we thank the ladies very much who made them.

After we ate, the small ones exchanged Valentine cards and the older ones danced.

LODGE NO 39, BRYAN Wheelock, Texas Dear Vestnik Readers, How is everyone doing? Hope no one is sick. We got a letter from Ludy, He said he was doing OK..He's in San Antonio at Randolph Air Force Base.

Yesterday, March 9, we all started playing tennis in P.E. I'm sure happy . I got 45 dollars from the lodge. I'm going to get me some clothes and a permanent tomorrow.

Sunday we went to Uncle Ben's and Aunt Albino's. We had a lot of fun.

The seniors at school are trying out for the senior play parts. They say it's going to be real good.

Hey, Aunt Rosie, did you go swimming again in the creek? I guess the water should be pretty warm now. On May 2, at Kovar Hall, we are having a district meeting, and Lodge No 39 Youth Club is having a play for Mother's Day and it's going to be good.

It looked like we were going to be snowed under. But I love it! I always enjoy snow. It was really pretty. When spring comes it is almost time for school to be out. I don't want school to be out never. I love everything about school — doing my lessons, my teacher, and playing ball. I don't have anyone to play with at home. My sister thinks she's too big to play with me and she's always helping mother in the house. Teddy works with my daddy when he's not in school. So me and my dogs play together. That's why I like school.

We are having a meeting Sunday. I hope we have a good meeting. All of you be there and bring a friend with you. We will be glad to have you. It's lots of fun.

I have something to tell our Youth Club members: I won second place on the point System in our Lodge 39. I was very proud; I worked hard for it.

When my sister told me to write a letter to the Vestnik I got mad at her because she told me to . But now I am glad I did. I got $16! I know it don't mean much to some of you, but it does to me. Boy, that's just like $200 to me. That's why I am glad I am an SPJST member. I always have something to do. If not, I can write a letter to the Vestnik. My sister, Kathy Jean won first place. She got $15. She also won first place in the district. She got $30! I am very proud of her. She worked hard for it; I know because she helps me. She also helps mother.

Hello, all you youth members of Lodge 81, Needville! We are going to have an Easter egg hunt at our next regular meeting, which is the second Sunday of the month, April 11, at 4 p.m. There will be three age groups — one will be ifrom 2 through 6 7 through 12; and 13 through ? There will be a prize for each group. The Easter bunny will furnish the eggs and refreshments for all the youngsters.

Be sure and get your mammies and daddies to bring you out to see the Easter bunny and bring your Easter baskets.

LODGE NO. 107, FLORESVILLE Dear Friends and Fellow Members, With great pride I would like to thank my father, Alvin Hrna, for encouraging me to work for our lodge.

I would also like to thank our Youth Leader, Mrs. Elsa Svoboda, and our District Youth Director, Mrs. Maxine Pavliska, and Brother Joe B. Hejny for the wonderful letter he sent me with the check.

Last year, I, worked for our lodge and received second place in our point system. This year I put in even more effort and won first place honors in our lodge, and also first place in the district. Next year I plan to put in even more effort to win honors for our lodge and district.

To win in the point system a person not only brings honor to the district and lodge, but to the Youth Club he belongs to. I wish more people would work for their lodge. Let's have more boys and girls joining the Youth Club here in Floresville.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Friday, March 12th, the public schools did not have school. My father and mother took my sister and me to the Alamo in San Antonio. It was very interesting. They also took us to the Hall of Horns at the Lone Star Brewery. We spent the night with some of our relatives in San Antonio. We got to see their new baby. She was very cute. We came home Saturday and were very tired.

Sunday, March 14th, I went to the SPJST adult meeting and I also entertained them.

Wednesday, March 24, 1965 FROM THE STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR T ALL LODGE YOUTH LEADERS:

In our March 6th meeting, the distt...iet youth directors expressed the desire to have some new outdoor or indoor games explained in our Vestnig. I will try to cover some of these in each issue. If your lodge is located in a town where there is an active Sokol unit, then be sure and get help from the local Sokol instructor. They will be happy to oblige. Keep these games handy for future reference, because it may be some time before this office can publish them in booklet form. We will not be dealing with games played in every school in the land and known to everyone, but rather with the lesser-known competitive games.

ONE DEEP:

Players form a circle large enough to be at least an arm's spread from one another .f acing the center. To start the game the leader picks out two players. One starts running around the outside of the circle, while the other player chases him. In order not to get tagged, the player has to step in front of some other player so that you form two players in the circle. The player that you step in front of must start running on the outside of the circle and repeat the some procedure. The idea is to jump in front of some other player to avoid being tagged.

If a player is tagged before he can jump in front of someone, then he bebecomes the one who does the chasing and tries to tag the player who has just tagged him.

Benefits of the game are physical and mental exercise. The running and the alertness required to keep from being caught are beneficial to the youngsters. Players must not cut across the inside of the circle or miss one or two by passing them inside the circle, This is known as "cutting the butter." Any player caught doing this is punished by having to become the "chaser." You may keep playing this game until the players tire out or your time runs out. After you try it, and if you have a large number of players, you can play it two deep, or three deep, and the last one on the outside circle runs out or gets tagged. The leader must be watchful and not allow any cheating.

We will play "Fisherman" next time.

VESTNIK LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members and Friends, Well, I hope everyone returned safely from the District Three Meeting.

It sure was very interesting. I really did enjoy it. I want to thank Lodge 154 for a wonderful time.

Well, I sure am happy we are going to have the Youth Activity Day at Lodge 54, West.

From 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Fort Worth Lodge 154, the Nemec Musical Playmates played. We really did enjoy it.

I hope everyone else did.

Also, I would like to mention that the Nemec Musical Playmates will play on Easter Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m.

We will have eats, drinks, and plenty of music. Come out and enjoy the fun. We want to let everyone get enough sleep, so hope the time fits your schedule.

Once again, I want to thank Lodge 154 for a marvelous time. I enjoyed every minute. I want to also say that I met some very nice friends. Hope we see you again, Well, I will close for now.

56, CORPUS CHRISTI Dear Vestnik Readers, The Youth Club of Lodge 56 had a meeting on March 14th. It was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by our President, Michael Majek. The roll was called by me (reporter), and we had 40 members present. The minutes were read by our Secretary, Georgia Ann Peters, and the Treasurer's report was given by Mary Ann Hermis.

We then announced the winners of our candy sale contest. First place was won by Darlene Hansen; second place

by Allen Novosad, and third place by Mary Ann Hermis.

We also discussed the district meeting which will be held in Robstown on April 25th. Anyone wishing to participate in the program should contact our Youth Leader, Mrs. Judy Majek, or her assistant Mrs. Margaret Majek.

The ones who participate in the program get a free dinner.

Door prizes were then drawn for and Patricia Stetek and Larry Novosad were the lucky ones. The birthday parents for the month were also given out and they went to Jay Kucera and Allen Novosad. Happy Birthday, Jay and Allen!

Our entertainment for the next meeting will be an Easter egg hunt LODGE NO.

for the children 12 and younger. Each child should bring six hard-boiled colored eggs or six candy unwrapped ego. The older ones Will have a "Country Ztore" and a dance in the evening.

The meeting was then adjourned and we watched movies which were taken in Ennis of Georgia Ann Peters, Juanita Foster, Don Hansen and Michael Majek's trip for the Sokol.

Refreshments were served afterwards.

Our next meeting will be on April the 11th, so we hope to see everyone at the meeting.

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Members and Friends, First of all I would like to thank Lodge 154, Fort worth, for the wonderful time they showed us at the District III meeting. I enjoyed the meeting, the food, and the social after the meeting. I met a lot of new friends at Lodge 151.

The Youth Activity Day will be held at our Lodge 54 hall on Sunday, July 11, 1965. I guess we will all be busy getting something to enter in the Arts and Crafts Contest. Congratulations to our District III Youth Director, Sister Carol Nesuida. I am sure you will make a good Youth Director.

Well, the weather is stormy out tonight. The weatherman said there may be some thunderstorms tonight.

The days are warming up some now. I guess spring is on its way.

The ones who attended the District III meeting at Lodge 154 from Lodge 54 were: Mr. Robert Cervenka, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Marek, Rose Marie and Kathy Jane Marek, Mr. and Mrs. Vine Nemec, Jimmy, Shirley, and Darlene Nemec. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kocurek, Bernadette, Robert, Patricia, Marvin and Jeanette Kocurek.

Don't forget March 27, that is our skating night at Hillsboro. We will meet about 6:30 or 7 p.m. at Lodge 54.

Parents are asked to go with their children. The youth leaders will not be responsible for any accidents if the parents don't come with their children.

Our next meeting will be April 4, at 2 p.m.

Remember the Youth Activity Day on July 11, at Lodge 54.

14 Loncg NO. 30, TAITON Dear Friends, Our !family belongs to the El Campo Horseman Riding Club. I enjoy the trail rides very much.

Last Saturday at the Taiton Community Center we had a Riding Club meeting. We elected a new staff. Mr. Lawrence Treybig was elected president. Mr. Arthur Priesmeyer was elected vice president. Mrs. Betty Priesmeyer was elected secretary-treasurer.

Four others were elected directors.

Later we had refreshments of potato chips, dips, and cokes.

Marie Edith Lukasik --L.°JST---- YOUTH CLUB, LODGE, 130, DALLAS We held our March meeting on the 7th at 2 p.m. we were somewhat disappointed at the relatively small attendance at this meeting. After the meeting, we went skating at the Denback Roller Rink.

We intend our next meeting to be a strictly business meeting. It will be held April 4 at 2 p.m. There will be a meeting of the coronation Ball and 'aster Committees after the main meeting.

The Easter party will be held April 9, but details have not been worked out yet. We will serve a casserole supper at the conclusion of the Mother Lodge meeting.

We hope to see everyone at our April meeting.

Many of the children in my class have the measles. It seems this is the time of the ear for the measles. My brother, Kevin, has them. I guess we will all have them soon.

My brother and I had the flu and now mother is getting over the flu. I do hope my father and sister don't ge` it, because you have to stay in bed and take medicine, and I like to be out anu praying.

Darlene Nemec, Treasurer LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Vestnik Readers, On March 14th we attended the spring meeting in Fort Worth. Those who attended from West were Robert Cervenka, Bro. Joe Kudelka, who received a 50-year pin, Mr. and Mrs. Vine Nemec, Br. and Mrs. Jerry Kocurek, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Marek.

Those who attended from the Youth Club were Jimmy, Darlene, and Shirley Nemec, Rose and Kathy Marek, and Bernadette, Robert, Patty, Jeanette and Marvin Kocurek.

We sure were greeted nicely by the brothers and sisters of Fort Worth Lodge No. 154. The food was delicious, and we thank Fort Worth lodge for their hospitality, and hope they will come to our lodge for the Youth Activity Day on July 11th.

The winners in the point system are: Rose Marek, 1st place; Shirley Nemec, 2nd place; and Bernadette Kocurek, 3rd place. Congratulations! and keep up the fine job. I hope that every youth member writes letters to the Vestnik and gets some credit also.

I would like to make corrections in my last letter. I skipped Kathy Marek and Carolyn Cepak when I listed those having birthdays. Happy Birthday!

Our next meeting will be held on April 4, if the painting is completed.

At this meeting we will elect a princess and duchess and their escorts. Everyone come.

Bro. John Kostohryz is back in the hospital and Sister Popp is slowly improving after her illness. We wish them a speedy recovery.

We are planning going either to the show or skating. Those who want to go to the show will meet before 7 o'clock at the theater in West on March 27th.

TEEN CLUB Dear Members and Friends, We held our last meeting March 7th and had a good attendance. There were 17 members and 6 visitors present.

The birthdays for this month were Dorothy Pavlicek (March 22), and William Mynar (March 31).

The new business was discussing having another dance. Our last Teenage dance was a great success.

Our Youth Leader, Ruth Krizan, gave us the point system sheets. Everyone please participate!

After the adult meeting the Jr. Youth Club had a. kite-flying contest.

Even though it was for the little kids, we bigger kids got out there and flew too. Stanley Watts won a prize for the prettiest kite. Everyone had a big time and enjoyed it.

Remember our next meeting is April 4, 1965, so everyone please be sure and come. There will be an Easter egg hunt for the young ones.

We also discussed having Teenage dances on Friday nights and babby sitting at the dances.

For our social, we will have a buffet dinner and record dance on Friday, March 26, at Fred Sommer's home, 1903 W. 14th. We will meet at the lodge at 7 p.m. and go from there. If you have any records, please bring them.

We have started a "Name-the-Club Contest," so we can get a good name for our club. A cash prize will be given to the best entry submitted. The entries must be in by the April meeting.

W still have quite a bit of planning to do on our Friday night dances, but we hope we will be able to have them

Our club is going to start taking care of the small children during the Saturday night dances. We will have games and toys for them to play with.

If you have any old games or toys you aren't using. please let us know. We will appreciate very much everything donated to us. This will help us raise money for our swimming pool which we are trying so hard to get by this summer. We will begin our baby sitting on March 27. For this dance the wonderful Danceables will be playing, and I want to encourage all of you to come and enjoy yourselves.

This coming Sunday, March 28, the District V. meeting will be held at our lodge. It will begin at 10 in the morning, and in the afternoon the children from the different lodges in District V will present a talent program. Hope to see you then.

Dear Friends, I thought it was about time to write another letter. With so much field work I hardly find any time to write letters.

I hope the weather holds out so all the farmers can get their crops planted.

A few weeks ago we had a science fair in El Campo High School auditorium.

Many of the exhibits were very interesting. Those who got first and second place were very excited.

Fraternally, Bennie Krpec, President LODGE NO. 4, HALLETTSVILLE Dear Youth Readers, Our last meeting was held on March 14, and we had fair attendance. The adult meeting was called to order by President Ervin Bucek. Victoria Vasek, Vernell Zak, and Sandra Holy led the Pledge of Allegiance. After the adult meeting the Youth Club meeting was called to order by Vice President Leonard Sklar. We discussed our Easter social and Easter egg hunt for our next meeting and chose our queen and duchess for the Youth Activity Day. Our Youth leader handed out the checks for the most points for 1964.

First place went to Anthony Grones; second to Victoria Vasek, and third to Marvin Mikush. and Money Strode, who

15 tied for third place. We all are thankful for the prizes which came in very handy.

We'd like to see more members in our Youth Club. We'd like to see each member bring a new member to our next meeting, which will be held on April 11. There will be an Easter egg hunt for children up to 12 years and a social for the rest.

The door prizes went to Alvin Mikush Sr., and to Marvin Mikush. The Birthday Cake went to Donnie Wojtek.

Fraternally, Anthony Grams, Youth Reporter TEEN CLUB, LODGE 88, HOUSTON Our Teen Club has been progressing at a great rate of speed. We cannot begin to thank all of those who have helped, so I am giving my sincere thanks to all. I have several important dates to announce!

First, we are having a buffet supper and record party for the Teen Club on March 26th, (Friday). Everyone is to meet at the hall at 7 p.m., and the party will start at 7:30 at Fred Sommers' home.

Secondly, our Teen Club will have a baby-sitting service for the Saturday night •dances, beginning March 27th.

There will be a 50c charge per child and they will be kept in the youth room. We are asking everyone to bring books and games their children have outgrown to the lodge. If you have hesitated coming to the meetings and dances because your children get bored and restless, we hope to solve the problem with a game party for the 2-to-12 age group. Since we do not have equipment the babysitting will start at age 2.

Thirdly, our Easter Egg Hunt will be Easter Sunday, at 3 p.m. at the lodge grounds.

Fourth, our talent and queen contests will be coming up soon. Anyone wishing to participate, or those knowing someone with special talent, please notify me at the address or phone listed below. Any girl, age 14 to 21, single, interested in running for queen of Lodge 88, please notify me.

As you can see, our youth program is getting bigger all the time and needs the support of everyone. Any suggestions you might have, I would greatly appreciate.

LODGE NO. 39, BRYAN Dear Vestnik Readers, Sunday we all went to the meeting at the hall. There were 15 of us at the meeting. We all had fun. We played ball for awhile and then practiced our play. At the Youth Club meeting we elected the following officers: Sammy Novosad — President Marilyn Vlinta — Vice President Teddy Manthei — Secretary Reporter Kathy Manthei Refreshment Committee: Mary Laze and Pam Vytopil.

We all had supper at the hall.

Everyone listened to the adult meeting. There were about 44 or 45 people at the meeting.

NECROLOGY

I

RESOLUTION OF SYMPATHY We the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge Cottonwood No. 6 at,West Texas. in behalf Of our members, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother, GUS C. DREWS, who passed away March 11, 1965, in a Waco hospital at the age of 58. He had been in poor health for the past two years.

Brother Drews was a native of the Gerald Community, and had lived on Route 2, West, Tekas, for 32 years. He was a farmer.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.

Friday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Gerald. Rev. Bruno Schroeder officiated. Interment was in the Gerald Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Gertrude, of Route 2, West; two sons, Marvin Drews Of Dallas, and Wayne Drews of Route 2, West; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Smith of Fort Worth; five brothers, Herman Drews, Alex Drews, Walter Drews, and John Drews, all of West, and Willie Drews of Elm Mott; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace.

State Capitol Complex in Austin. New buildings are the Supreme Court Building, John H. Reagan Statt Office Building, Texas Employment Commission, Sam Houston State Office Building, Archives and Library, State Insurance Building — all constructed since World War II. Walton Building, formerly Travis County Courthouse, has been abandoned. It formerly housed Land Office and some Agriculture Department facilities.

AUSTIN: HISTORIC PAST, DYNAMIC PRESENT

By Allen Duckworth Political Editor of The Dallas Morning News (Continued) In 1945, most of the state government was centered in that classic architecture of the Texas Capitol, built with 15,000 carloads of Texas red granite, with interiors of Texas limestone, wainscoting of ash, mahogany, oak, pine and cherry woods, roof of 85,000, square feet of copper, clay tile flooring, terrazo, Texas rock aggregate.

Most of the state government was in that great building 20 years ago — Governor, Railroad Commission, the two branches of the Legislature, Supreme Court, Court of Criminal Appeals. About the only ones not represented were the Highway Commission, in a separate building, the Education Agency, the Land Office, and part of the Department of Agriculture. In summertime, bees buzzed the near-lobby offices of the Confederate Pensions Office.

After the war, when state government expanded rapidly, agencies without room in the Capitol building sprawled all over Austin, in rented, leased or purchased quarters. ',Today, things are being brought back together. In the Capitol Building itself, few agencies exist. Main offices there now are the State Legislature —

House and Senate, and the newly acquired private offices for senior members of the House; the Governor, with reburbisbed 2nd floor offices and a new private elevator to his Secretary of State's office on the ground floor, the Treasurer and his supervault, built by acid through solid rock, and the Comptroller of Public Accounts, who soon may be moved to one of the new state office buildings.

A major postwar phenomenon in Austin, contributing to the hiring of hundreds of acres of office space, has been the proliferation of the so-called "trade associations."

Time was when those with special interests in Austin legislation just hired cigar - smoking, whisky-andsteak-dispensing lobbyists of the old school. Now, it is more scientific.

Austin today has permanent offices for trade associations which total 193.

There are 4 international groups, 9 national, 11 regional, 4 district, 165 state.

They include such groups as the American Legion, State Bar, Butane Dealers, Classroom Teachers, Council of Churches, Electric Cooperatives, Lumbermen, Licensed Nurses, physicians of many types oil workers, piano teachers, plumbers, University of Texas dads, veterans, brewers, state banks, state college teachers, dairymen, high school coaches, city managers, insurancemen, fire chiefs, fire fighters, florists, embalmers dry, cleaners, grocers, cotton ginners, locomotive firemen, pharmacists, police chiefs,

Wednesday, March 24, 1965 engineers, various church denominations, public employes, ready-mixed concrete firms, sheriffs, cafemen, tobacco distributors — only a few that make life nice and easy for leasing agents for Austin's office building space.

There is a lot of face-lifting around old Austin, making it the new Austin.

And there are those with nostalgic leanings who deplore it. Landmarks disappear, landmarks are restored, many old native-stone buildings remain, with new, modern faces. Yet, much of colonial Austin remains. There is the Greek Ionic style of the Governor's Mansion, frequently modernized since its erection in the last century. Out on Enfield Road, the old Governor Pease Mansion, which once had a wooden water tower, is now the home of former Gov. Allan Shivers, a man who needs no CARE packages and who spent a fortune restoring, modernizing and expanding it for his fam ily home.

Governments, local, state and federal, have contributed to the change in Austin's face.

A new federal center of' two magnificent buildings, separated by a giant courtyard, is almost completed on the eastern side of the downtown area.

President Johnson will have his Texas office there.

Austin, by the way, is blessed by a sort of municipal socialism. It has so many governmental properties -- local, state, federal, plus the usual school and church lands — that a bit more than an estimated 50 per cent of property values are tax exempt on municipal rolls. But the city must furnish police and fire protection. This is offset, however, by the city ownership of the power and light plant. This facility transfers millions of dollars of profits each year to the City's general fund, thus lessening the threat of a tax rate increase, says Asst. City Manager James A. Wilson, a major contributor of facts for this article.

Most dramatic example of the expansion of state government is the complex built, all after the war, north of the capital grounds, leading eventually to the University of Texas campus• These are the new state office buildings.

Sometimes it is as "dekuju". Dekuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is "dekujeme". It is not necessary to add an equivalent of "you", but it could be done and it is often done. Then, it is "dekuji ti" when we are close to the person addressed, or, "dekuji Vam" if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.

The most common reply to the word "dekuji" is the word "prosim". The English "I am sorry" in Czech means "Je mi lito". The Czech phrase is used in the same sense as the original meaning of "I am sorry," but generally, we can say that "Je mi lito" is used much more sparingly than "I am sorry". The latter can often be translated "odpust'te" or "prominte".
