FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK IT WAS A GREAT DAY!

CLIMBING HIGHER . .

Fabulous! Great! Overwhelming! There really aren't adequate adjectives in the English language to properly describe the two-day Grand Opening of Lodge Pokrok No. 68 in Houston. • The first thing that should be mentioned, however, is the very fine weather that attended the two-day celebration. It couldn't have been better. The favorable weather was responsible for the huge over-capacity crowds that came to 1435 Beall Street 'from every corner of the state. Had the severe icesleet-rain storm hit Texas and Houston 48 hours earlier than it did, the ettflect would have been disastrous, so far as the opening was concerned. The weather has a lot to do with the success of so many things, and in this instance, the gods were smiling and generous.

Climbing higher is a matter of willingness to pay the price. Most of us are willing to give about eight hours a day to our jobs. Up to this point everyone else is in the race. But those who forge ahead put in "overtime." The return for a stan, dard day's work is moderate because competition is so keen, but overtime pay is always high — it goes up in a geometrical ratio. Many thousands have the ability to achieve outstanding success in every undertaking of life — politics, literature, music — if they were willing to give themselves and overtime to one achievement. Getting is the result of giving. When one directs all his energy into one channel, and gives himself wholly to one task, something will happen. —Chas. Flynt

Estimates of the number who attended the Saturday night festivities ranged from 3,600 to'about 4,000. Every seat was taken in the huge ballroom and many were standing. The dancing was mostly of the shuffle variety. About the same number came for the formal dedication ceremonies on Sunday. Buses filled with SPJST members rolled onto the huge lot from Dallas, Waco, Temple, and Taylor. It was truly a magnificent gathering of friends and members of the SPJST from all over Texas. It would be impossible to list all

the towns and communities represented there. The traffic in the hallways was jammed constantly. Passage was difficult anywhere you turned.

• As for the building itself, you have to see it to fully comprehend and appreciate the elegance of it all. Elegance is the word, because it properly describes the tasteiful and exquisite decor and furnishings throughout the building. Our Houston brothers and sisters went "all out," and the results are there to see. No doubt about it, it is

one of the finest anywhere, and they can be justifiably proud of their beautiful new edifice. If you :didn't get down for the Grand Opening, you must make it to Lodge 38 soon. See for yourself. Now that the fanfare and pomp is over, the hard-working membership at Lodge 88 will settle down to the routine and task of edging the lodge toward payment of its obligations and the other many tasks that face any active and progressive lodge. It took much work and energy to bring the lodge to its present posture, and it will take an equal amount of work and dedication to keep it going on a weekto-week business basis. They will do it.

It seems that despite all the advance publicity of the Houston opening. some of the local Houston papers missed the boat on what and who was doing what and where. 'Brother Rudy Sefcik sends us some interesting and somewhat perplexing iniformation from a Houston newspaper. On Thursday, February 11, a Mrs. Maeik (certainly a Czech name) wrote to the "Watchem" column of the Houston Chronicle. Mrs, Macik wantecl to know, in short, " . . . is there 9 German social club called the SPJS1 here in Hoaston?" The vai , of : the column answered Mrs. Macik thusly: "Lodge Pokrok No. 88, SPJST, is a Polish organization at 1140 Robbie St. There are two German social groups here in Houston: the Saengerbund,
