FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK IT COULD BE. THE START OF SOMETHING .

At the Lod,ge 47, Seaton, Christmas party, an event took place that caught my attention, and I'm sure that of others present. I was especially interested in that particular portion of the proceedings because something similar has been on my mind for some time. Even though my ideas on the matter originated with the longstanding practice of TIME magaizine, I think the idea is a noble one and one which I hope does catch fire in the SPJST. • • Lodge 47 president, Brother Frank Ilejl, Jr, on behalf of the membership of his lodge, presented a special plaque to Brother and Sister Bill Sodek of Lodge No, 47. The inscription on the plaque read as follows: "SPJST Lodge No. 47 Presents to Bro. and. Sis. Win. and Elsie Sodek this AWARD FOR, OUTSTANDING SERVICE Contributed To Our Lodge For the Year 1964 Given December 20, 1964" • • OW course, the Sodeks were overwhelmed. Who wouldn't be? It is a tremendous honor to be so honored and recognized by fellow lodge members.

It is a fine expression of appreciation for work in the lodge. For a couple of decades now TIME magazine has given similar distinction to their "Man Of The Year," which has since become a national tradition and as coveted a

DEFINITIONS . . .

Here are some more definitions from the lexicon of human experience that you won't find in any dictionary, but which make pretty good sense just the same: Inconsistency: The only thing in which most of us are consistent.

Diplomacy: The business of handling human porcupines with out disturbing their quills.

Prejudice vs. conviction: The difference between the two is that you can explain the latter without getting mad.

And remember, it's amazing how much people could accomplish if no one cared who got the credit.

tribute as the Nobel Peace Prize or a Rhodes Scholarship. TIME's three million plus readers, including a large segment of the U. S. population anxiously awaits the cover of that publication with the first issue of each year.

(President Johnson appears on the latest cover). Although TIME's criteria may be a little different than what we would be interested in, the idea, generally is an excellent one, and one that any member of the SPJST would indeed covet and cherish, if he (or she) were the recipient of such an award.

A good starter would be for our lodges to star t a srnilar p r o j e c t among their own membership, and then later the idea may catch on for the whole SPJST — an "SPJST Personality Of The Year." So this is something new? Certainly. We used to not have seven districts. We didn't used to have a "Miss SPJST." We used to not have an SPJST State Queen. We used to not have a lot of things we now have. Why not an outstanding SPJST "Personality Of The Year"?

• • Each lodge would work out its own criteria for selecting their "personality" oil the year, and offer whatever they like as an award. Along with this, the Supreme Lodge could work out something similar for a statewide selection.

Any member could recommend another member for this award in writing, stating why he thinks the person is worthy of the award. A committee or group, outside the SPJST, would decide on the recipient, after having

Add to that a $25 or $50 Savings Bond, and yoD'd really have something to shoot for, much desired by ally member a the Order. It would promote work and excellence. Every member would feel that he has a more direct and personal stake in the selection. It would be a great honor. I hope that by January 1st, 1966, the Vestnik will carry the picture of such an individual on its two front covers. We hope the idea catches on throughout the SPJST. It could be the start of something . . .

With this second issue of 1965, our readers will notice the "new look" of two q uoiat pages, adopted by the last convention in Waco. It has involved designing another front page, moving the Entertainment Calendar," the ads, and the ,SPJST Insurance page toward the inside middle of the publication.

There are no technical difficulties involved. It is now left up to the readers and members to see how they like it.

Two issues ago, we paid tribute to two retiring district directors, Brother Cervenka (III), and Brother Skrabanek (V). Brother Paul Sablatura, retiring chairman of the Publication Committee, addressed the membership at the close of his term of office. He now represents District VI on the Board of Directors of our SPJST Rest Home in Taylor.

In this issue, we welcome a new member of the Publication Committee, Brother Hugo, Schefcak of Dallas. It was mutually agreed at the last convention that Sister Frances Olexa would become chairman of that committee.' The third member Of the committee is Brother Rudolph Troubil.

Also in this issue, we are spotlighting the two new directors of District III and District V, Brothers Pokladnik and Hanka, respectively.

In accordance with an act of cong ress passed in 1062 having to do with increases in postal rates, the third of the three stipulated increases went into effect on January 1st, 1065. The law, passed in 1962, called for yearly increases for the following three years

Wednesday, January 13, 1965 as follows: .6 in 1963; .8 in 1964; and is in 1965. For the SPJST, it will amount to about 19 or 20 dollars more in postage costs with each mailing of the Vestnik. The first issue of 1965, for example, cost us $18.01 more to dispatch than the last issue of 1964. This will vary with each mailing, more or less. This increase amounts to almost a thousand dollars for the whole year. It cost $91.80 in postage to send out the !first issue of 1965. It is interesting to note that the law exempts newspapers mailed to addresses within the same county where the newspaper is published. Hence, it costs us only 89c to send 506 copies within McLennan County.

According to the agreement between the publishers and the Supreme Lodge, the SPJST will absorb this additional cost. There's no doubt that these increases seriously hurt small, rural, independent newspapers, who have no alternative but to increase subscription rates. One increase leads to another. Remember the day of the 3-cent stamp, the penny postal card, the 5cent air mail stamp? Is there no end?

BRO. CYRILL (SID) POKLADNIK

Newsbriefs Venzl Zastoupil, Sr., passed away in Dallas on January 5th. Interment was in Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas on Thursday. Brother Zastoupil was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 84 in Dallas.

• • Emil Sumbera, 80, passed away in a Weimar hospital on December 24, 1964.

He was born in Ammansville, but had lived in Borden since 1920. He was a member of the SPJST over 61 years. He was a member of Lodge No. 8 in Weimar.

Joe W. Rippel, 86, passed away December 26th at the Frank. Wagner Memorial Hospital in Shiner. Burial was in the SPJST Cemetery in Shiner.

Brother Rippel was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 45 in Shiner.

• • Guthrie V. Blahuta, 49, well-known Moravia merchant died in Renger Memorial Hospital in Hallettsville on January 3rd. Interment was in the Moravia Catholic Cemetery. Brother Blahuta was a member of Lodge No. 23 in Moravia,. ♦ • Be sure and note the scheduled Texas appearances of the Czechoslovak State Song and Dance Troupe under `(Cultural Notes" in this issue.

BRO. SID POKLADNIK, NEW DISTRICT III DIRECTOR

Upon the retirement of Brother Robert Cervenka of West, long-time member of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, and District III Director since the districts were established in 1952, the delegates for District III to the XIX Convention in Waco last June elected Brother Cyrill (Sid) Pokladnik of Dallas as their new District III Director, His term of office started January 1st, 1965.

Although Brother Pokladnik is quite well known in SPJST circles, we thought it apropriate for the membership of District III, and the entire SPJST, to have a still closer look at his past activities, both personal and in the •SPJST. — Editor.

• • Brother Sid Pokladnik was born in Rudice, Czechoslovakia, October 12, 1912. The folowing year he came to America with his parents who settled in St. Paul, Minnesota, as a starting place for their new life here. Shortly after, the family moved to the small town of Foley, Minnesota, where Sid attended school until the age of fifteen.

He came to Dallas, Texas in 1927 and was employed by Rudolph's Market and attended night school to complete his education.

After working for Rudolph's Market

3 for twenty years he purchased the business and proceeded to remodel it and yet retain the atmosphere which had made it famous. Sid says that he has the only old-time market and sausage factory left in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area.

Rudolph's Market has been a landmark of fine meats and Old World sausage since 1895 and has changed hands only three times since its beginning.

In 1934 Sid married Justine Svoboda Hof Floresville, Texas, and this past June they observed their 30th wedding anniversary. They have two children, John Cyrill 15, and Justine Marie 14.

John is a sophomore at Jesuit; High School and helps his father at the market in his spare time. Justine Marie is a freshman at Bishop Lynch High School.

The family home overlooks White Rock Lake at 3784 West Bay Circle where Justine takes great pride in maintaining her home and flower garden.

Sid remembers that he first became interested in the SPJST soon after he came to Texas. Being a musician he was asked to bring his trumpet and play with the orchestra at Lodge 84.

In January 1929 he became a member of SPJST Lodge Pokrok No. 84.

He was regular in his attendance to their monthly meetings and was soon elected financial secretary, a position he held for several years before the members elected him to be their vice president. He soon became their president, and after serving for 12 years he declined re-election in December, 1963.

Sid was the first president of District Three, being re-elected for several terms. While serving as district president he promoted closer relations between all seven districts, more activity in youth clubs, district contests. and was active in all the other promotional activities of the SPJST. In 1956 Sid was elected delegate to the State Convention at Temple, where he was elected vice chairman of that group. In 1960 and 1964 he was similary honored by the San Antonio and Taco conventions. At Waco, in addition to being selected to serve as vice chairman, he was elected Director of District No. Three.

Sid has served on numerous committees representing; his lodge on the American Czech Festival Committee, which represents all American-Czech people in Texas. He was elected chairman of Czech Day at the State Fair of

4 Texas for two consecutive years and honorary chairman in 1964. He is presently chairman of the Board of Directors of the RPJST Rest Home at Taylor, and chairman of the Dallas Fraternal Council, Outside his lodge activities, Sid is a director of a Dallas investment firm, a partner in a real estate and investment ,firm, and the owner-operator of a 600-acre ranch where he devotes his time to the raising of cattle and pecans.

He has always been active in his church and the Knights of Columbus, being a 4th Degree night, having served as Ca ptain for two years. In 1962 he was nominated for the Linz Award by the citizens of Dallas. This award is an honorary one given to Dallas' most outstanding citizen and Sid takes humble pride in the .fact that he was nominated. He takes great interest in his home town of "Big D" and is always eager to help promote its welfare.

A Personal Message From Bro. Pokladnik to the Brotherhood of the SPJST: First, I want to thank you for honoring me as you have in making me one of your directors. It is my purpose to so dedicate myself to the discharge of my duties that your faith in me will be justified.

BROTHER ERNEST J. HANKA NEW DISTRICT V DIRECTOR

The responsibility of electing officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge is the duty of the delegates who are the duly elected representatives of their respective lodges. Every four years these delegates meet at a convention, and at the 19th Convention of the SPJST Brother Ernest J. Hanka was elected as director to the Supreme Lodge from District Five.

Brother Ernest J. Hanka was born in Houston, Dec. 24, 1914, and has resided in Houston all his life. He is a attorney by profession and heads his own law firm. In addition he owns the Ernest J. Hanka Realty and Investment Co. Brother Hanka's family background qualifies him as a fraternalist. His

Wednesday, January 13, 1965 Brother Hanka, is also active in the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Assn., and was recently reelected as president of Chapter No. 1, Houston. He also is on the board of directors of various corporations.

In 1941 Brother Hanka entered the armed 'forces of the USA as a private and rose to the rank of captain in the I. G. Corp, and was honorably discharged in February 1946.

grandparents were charter members of Lodge Pokrok No. 88, Houston, and his parents were also active members of that lodge. In 1932 he became a member of Lodge Pokrok 88 and has been an active member, holding various offices, such as vice president, treasurer', and served on various committees: auditin g, entertainment, finance, and board of trustees and has served as chairman of the board at various times. He has held the position of chairman of the building committee for the past two years, and is now eagerly looking forward to the dedication of the beautiful new lodge Pokrok 88, which is now completed.

Brother Hanka, in addition to being active in his own lodge, has been very active in District Five, serving as vice president, 1st vice president and as president until his resignation Jan. 1, 1965, in order to take over his duties as district director.

Brother Hanka is also active in civic affairs; he served as president of the Timbergrove Manor Civic Club in 1962, one of the most outstanding civic clubs in the city of Houston; he also served as section chairman of the Community Chest, and other civic drives. Not only is he civic-minded; he is a dedicated fraternalist. He is also a member of Sokol Houston, Western Bohemian Fraternal Association, Travelers' Protective Assn., Reagan Lodge No. 1037 AF and AM, Sons of Hermann, and other organizations.

Dear Sisters and Brothers, As we enter a new year and for the next four years my duties and responsibilities as director of District Five will begin.

Since my election as director at the convention, and as the time approaches for me to assume my duties, I have lelt like the old turkey gobler that was being led to the chopping block. Directors are the governing body of the association, and upon their integrity fall the responsibilities for the operation of our Order, and also the undertaking of all kinds of tasks.

We will have all types of problems, and as directors we must have determination to face these problems of today and proceed courageously. Once they vote upon an action, a member may feel that said action was not properly voted on. He is usually told about it in the news medium of the Order, or at his district meeting, or at some local lodge meeting. Sometimes you wonder if it is worth the time to put constituents' welfare before his own.

As the director of District Five, asked the klelegates at our 19th convention to bestow uuon me these responsibilities. I will always be grateful and words cannot express my appreciation to the delegates and members of District Five for the confidence they have placed in me as their director.

We must remember that the office of director belongs to the members of our Order, and as directors we are the servants of all the members, and to work in unity and harmony with all the lodges within the district. It is my desire to visit with the lodges in my district as often as possible.

As fraternalist,s, we must dedicate ourselves to the interest of our Order and we must continue to grow in order to exist, and also have an incentive for our Order to grow. The SPJST has shown a steady ,growth of membership, assets and insurance. This is done by

We must have new members who are willing to sacrifice their time and loyalty to the STPJ,ST, and not members who think of their own selfish interests or personal desire or who join to get what they can get cut of it. This type of members we no not need, because we already have members in our Order who feel we should not write up too many new members.

For the next four years, I will be looking l'erward to working with all the Supreme Lodge officers, directors, and the very efficient office personnel at our Supreme Lodge.

CONC.LUSION The public schools have done much toward Americanizing the Czechs, because they worked in such a way that the Czechs did not feel forced to . accept a new way of life. By bringing together children of all religious and nationalities, a spirit of co-operation was fostered and better relations were advanced among all the groups. The schools also worked to encourage the individual's aspiration to improve the living standard of both himself and society.

A lea ing indication of the literary interest of the Czechs is the amount of reading materials that they publish.

Journalism preceded book literature for - Czech. • Americans because it was difficult to obtain books from their mother country, the source on which they depended. In America, however, the CzechS had an active foreign language press to satisfy their reading interests, The foreign language , press kept the immigrant informed not only as to• local news, but offered one of the best mediums of interpreting America to new and prospective citizens.

The first Czech newspaper in Texas was published at La Grange, Texas by F, L. Gluckman, on February 6, 1879.

Its name was THE TEXAN, and was edited by L. C. Hausild. The paper was published every Thursday until July, 1879, when Frank Lidiak bought it. He ehanged the name- of the paper to THE

The first organization instituted by Czech Catholics in Texas as a fraternal order had its beginning at Bluff in 1879. This was the Prvni-TexaskyCeskoMora ysky Podporujici Spolek. The First Texas Czech-Moravian Benevolent Order in Texas. In 1883, this organization became a unit of the Druha Rimska Katolicka, Ustredna Jednota (The Second Roman Catholic Church Central Society). On March 21, 1889, at Bluff, seven local lodges organized into the Czech Roman Catholic Unit of the State of Texas. This is known today as the KJT. A woman's division was established later as the KJZT. The SPJST grew out of the CeskoSlovensky Podporujici Spolek, a national fraternal order. It was established in Texas on December 28, 1896.

J. R. Kubena, Augustin Haidusek, and Frank Cihal made up its by-laws. C. V. Vanek took Judge Haidusek's place later on and these three made up the executive board. On June 29, 1897, the SPJST held its first convention in La Grange, Texas. At this time it had 22 lodges and 496 members. At this convention, state officers were elected and the VESTNIK named the official organ, to be published bi-weekly.

(Editor's comment: The first official organ of the SPJST was called the "Slovanska Jednota',' first published on September 1st, 1897, by Frank Lidiak at La Grange. It lasted 10 months. A short time after that, Frank Fabian published the "Obzor Hospodarsky" in Hallettsville every Thursday. In October 1899, the title was shortened to "Obzor." The "Obzor" remained as the official SPJST organ of the SPJST until August 1912. On September 1st, 1912, the SPJST started the independent "Vestnik". The first four issues were printed in Hanettsvine; after that it was published in La Grange. In 1914, it was moved back to Hallettsville, then in the spring of that year, it was moved to Fayetteville, where it stayed until 1933. Since that time the Vestnik has been published in West by the Cechoslovak Pub. Co.) At the present, SPJST lodges are found in every part of the state and include every religion, from the Moravian Brethren, to the Catholics, to the free•thinkers. The Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, its translated name, is one of the largest and financially soundest of Czech benevolent associations and has extended its functions to include loans

V.E.STNI.K on property and civic responsibilities, including educating members in citizenship duties.

Other Czech organizations were formed during the period from 18481900 also, both Catholic and secular, for both men and women, (though usually separate). For example, in Yoakum an organization of Czech women was founded in September, 1894, the Benevolent Society of the Ascension of Mary. In 1897, the president formed another unit in Hallettsville, Texas, and the two units together formed the Czech Roman Catholic Aiding Union of Women in Texas. Also, at Bryan, Texas, on March 15, 1897, the Statni. Rada Katolickeho Delnika (the State Council of the Catholic Worker) was formed.

The Czechs in Texas also organized into theatrical groups and music groups in order to propagate their heritage. The most popular organizations were the amateur theatrical societies. The plays were in Czech and the proceeds went to charitable causes.

Many orchestras also sprang up among the Czechs to satisfy the Czech people's love of music. The Czech orchestras play folk songs and classical music Of the Czech composers such as Dvorak and Simetana and some Russian composers. It is exceptional to find a Czech with no knowledge of a musical instrument.

One area in which the Czech did not develop was that of politics. A reason suggested was being handicapped by the nature and traditions of the political activities of their native country. However, the basic reasons for disinterest in American and Texas politics was their European back ,ground, their ignorance of the English language, and the remoteness of their rural setting. During the Civil War the Czechs did place their sympathies with the Union cause. This was due to their having lived in Texas only a few years, not having owned slaves, and loving liberty.

The greatest influence on the Czechs politically was Aug. Haidusek. His views were anti-prohibitionist and favored the Democratic party. He also encouraged the learning of the English language and discouraged Czech nationalism in America. In this, he was aided by his newspaper, SVOBODA. Another prominent Czech 'figure in Texas was I. J. Gallia, who co-founded the I. J. Gallia Land Company of Houston, Texas, with Frank Russek. It became a vast enterprise, principally

A tribute to the role of the Czech people in the development of Texas was paid by a report of the Immigration Commission in 1936 on examining 30 settlements of different nationalities for comparison in Texas: "Few rural colonies were visited where the members appeared more intelligent or more prosperous than some of the Bohemian communities in Texas."

They were married on that date in 1939 in the Wallis Presbyterian Church in rites conducted by the late Rev. Joseph Miksovsky. The Zatykas have two chEdren, Denver, 22, and Janice, 15. Mrs. Zatyka is the former Marie Sebesta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Sebesta of Rosenberg, and his parents are the late Mr. and Mrs. John Zatyka of East Bernard. We finally received some rain about two weeks ago and the ,fog really gets bad early in the morning. I think the rain was appreciated by everyone and even the little ones. My boys had fun getting into it just to get a few

sprinkles on them.

8 We all had a ball on New Year's eve at our lod ge hall. We had people to come from quite a distance to our dance and it was deeply appreciated.

We hope that they will come again next year and bring their friends with them. We will be having a teenage d ance on Valentine Day and hope to see all you teenagers come and have a wonderful time.

We had a turkey supper after the meeting and was it delicious! We would like to thank the ladies who prepared the food and worked. They all did a wonderful job. After all the holidays with all the good food and sweets, I am sure that everyone will watch their diet again and loose a few pounds, but it was fun while it lasted.

Our next meeting will be held Sunday, February 7, at 3 p.m. Everyone bring a bite to eat as usual. Wishing everyone a Prosperous and a Happy new Year.

First of all, we wish to thank Brother and Sister Jarda Ctrny for donating the doll that was won by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kaluza. Actually, they had won it and then donated it right back, and then it was won by the Kaluzas.

We want to thank Sister Georgia Beran for taking the time to sell the tickets. Thanks also to Sister Evelyn Matthews for making all the clothes and selling the tickets.

A very special thanks to all our good friends from Houston, who came to our Christmas party. (See accompanying picture). Our president, Leon Sevcik, entertained us after the meeting with music on the accordion. Incidentally, all our members are always invited to bring their instruments along, and we like to have a good song fest after our meetings. It always "perks" things up.

Our next meeting will be held on the first Sunday in February, Feb. 7, 1965.

Along with good news, we must have a bit of sad news. Our good member, Bro. Raymond Petrash of La Marque, drowned while fishing on December 22, 1964. This came as a great shock to all of us who knew him. He loved to fish. We want to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved survivors.

Dear Sisters and Brothers: The first Youth Club meeting this year will be held on Sunday, January 24, 1965, starting at 3 p.m., at the American Legion Hall, Post 399, 826 Dwight Ave., South San Antonio. This is the date, so please mark it on your calendar at this time. The date was decided on because it would not conflict with our lodge meeting.

There will be no speeches. but we will have election of officers. We want to appeal to our young members to attend this meeting, and elect their own officers. They like it, we know it, and it is good that they know how to conduct a meeting, because one day they will have to take over the lodge offices.

Do not miss it, children; be sure to come, and bring your neighbors and friends with you. Remember that the Youth Club treasury and all property belongs to you and needs your management.

We especially urge the parents to come to the meting and discuss our plans of activities for the whole year.

We would like to hear your ideas and get your help to make everything possible for our children. Please, be sure to come: we need you.

First of all, we want to thank you for electing us youth leaders of Lodge San Antonio No. 133. We accept with humility the honor you have conferred upon us. We accept it with a deep resolve to do all that we can for the welfare of our children and our lodge.

We are well aware of all the duties and responsibilities we have taken over.

We will try our best, we will assume our duties cheerfully, and discharge them to the best of our ability. We assure you of our desire to justify the confidence you have placed in us.

Dear Members and Friends, A happy and prosperous New Year is wished to all SPJST members and friends from far and near by Lodge 84 members, and may we say we enjoyed meeting you in the past and sincerely hope to get to see a lot more of you wonderful people during 1965.

Our last meeting was held Sunday, December 20 and we were so pleased to see such a great turn out of members.

It was a pleasure having you among us and we do hope more and more of you come to the meetings during the coming year.

We held our annual election of officers and may we express our sincere congratulations to all the officers who were reelected and a hearty thank you for a job well done in the past years.

The officers are as follows: President, Bro. Ben Jarma; Secretary, Bro. Frank Henzen; Treasurer, Sister Carlyn Ondrusek; Financial Secretary, Sister Annie Steiner; Sergeant-at-Arms, Bro. Jerome Rejcek; Flag Bearer, Bro. Allan Wayne Henzen.

There were many other committees appointed, such as Entertainment and House Committees and various other committees which are necessary to run the lodge.

After the meeting everyone had a bite to eat and settle down and enjoy visiting with many friends who don't come out often and it was so nice seeing all of you. The big topic of the evening was a Christmas narty for the

10 youngsters from babes to tots and teens.

Many sincere thanks to all the youth leaders and assistants, Sister Bessie Petr, Sisters Lillie Jarma, Mildred Baleja and Ruth Chmelar, who worked so hard with all tht preprations, the beautiful decorations and all.

The children were very excited waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. Finally, the great moment arrived! The front doors opened and who should drive up in a shiny new red car but Santa himself and to the surprise of everyone lie even brought Mrs. Santa with him.

Mrs. Santa explained that the reason she hadn't come out before was because she would get awfully cold riding in a sleigh with Santa and his reindeer, so this time Santa provided a brand new shiny red car with a cozy warm heater to keep Mrs. Santa's toes warm. We are so glad because we really wouldn't want Miss Santa to get too cold.

Thanks a million, Mn. and Mrs. Santa, and you can bet we all will be looking for you next Christmas.

Now a notice to all our members: our next meeting will be held this coming Sunday at 4 p.m., January the 17th.

The program was called to order by the president Brother Joe Paprskar. He extended a cordial welcome to all present and we were happy to see the large attendance.

Santa Claus distributed 225 snacks of fruit, nuts and candy.

We want to say "thanks" to all of the brothers who come each Christmas to help sack all of these goodies. They have a regular assembly line and also enjoy the fellowship. Thanks again to each and everyone for making this a happy occasion, and we wil be looking forward to seeing all of you at our other lodge activities. PROGRAM AT LODGE NO. 133, SAN ANTONIO Dear Friends, The Lodge No. 133 Youth Club held its Christmas party on December 20th, The weather was beautiful. We had a large crowd and everyone enjoyed the good food. The children really put on a good play. After the program dear Ole' Santa arrived from the North Pole and gave out bags of goodies to the children. The children's names were written with silver glitter and each had a big candy cane on it. The children had the pleasure of taking pictures with Santa. The youth and some adults did a beautiful job on the hall. It was decorated with red and green crepe paper, with big red bells in the middle. Wednesday, January 13, 1965 FROM THE STATE YOUTH LEADER CAMPING OBJECTIVES

Recreational and scenic parks are yours to use and enjoy. There is no charge for camping facilities, where permitted. These parks are for the benefit of schools, churches, boy and girl scouts, campfire girls, YWCA, YMCA, children's homes, welfare agencies, adult groups and other organizations interested in developing character and outdoor recreational programs.

Every group using a camp has a personal reason and purpose for coining to one qf nature's beautiful locations.

However, certain camping objectives are common to most groups. Some of these are: 1. Learn about the out-of-doors and stimulate r a awareness and appreciation of nature's beauty.

2. Provide an opportunity for aroundthe-clock democratic living situations.

3. Open new fields of interest, hobbies, and recreational skills through study, work, play and fun out-of-doors.

4. Develop resourcefulness, self-reliance, initiative and creativeness through basic experiences.

5. Promote good health practices through wholesome environment, supervision, group action and motivation.

6. Give an opportunity for all to share in real and meaningful work experiences.

Requirements

To provide the most beneficial camping experience for all groups, there are certain requirements which must be enforced.

1. Leadership — All groups must have leadership by mature adults.

2. Program — A planned program must be submitted in many camps to the camp director two weeks before the group is scheduled to use the facilities.

3. Insurance — Sponsoring groups must make provisions for each camper to have adequate health and accident insurance. This is available in your home community.

4. Water Front — A qualified life guard must be on duty when your group is conductin g water front activities.

5. Immunizations — Each camper is required to have immunizations against tetanus, typhoid and polio.

6. Pre-camp Discussion — Campers should be !f amiliar with the rules of safety in hiking, Water front activities,

VESTNIK and all other program features, and boundaries in each camp area.

7. Souvenirs — Nothing is ever to be removed from camp property, whether it be roCks, plants, cactus, cuttings, animal skeletons, relics or any other similar objects.

8. Firearms -- Firearms are not permitted on any camp grounds. Any firearms brought to the camp will be confiscated until campers leave.

9. Publicity — All state parks are free to use, and the only expenses or fees paid are for food, insurance, trans, portation, and incidentals.

10. Inspection — Camp site must be inspected by group leaders prior to your departure.

Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, the district youth director was with us to help organize the club. She explained how the point system works and also about the queen and king, duchess and duke contests, and talent contests.

Dear Readers, On December 12 the members of

Lodge 66. had their Christmas party.

The Youth Club and the Choral Club provided entertainment.

The youth taking part in the Nativity Scene were: Mary — Kay Gerlich; Joseph — Johnnie Gaidusek; Three Wise Men — John Engelke, Michael Kutni, and Eddie Mazanec; Shepherds — Janice and Joyce Briggs, Michael and Thomas Galler; Cherubs — Melanie Hanus, Debbie Galler, Margaret Gaidusek, Julie Slovak, Patricia Stanislav and Tana Kutni; Carolers — Cynthia and Kathy Moore, Norma Hensel, Kathy Mazanec, Donna Gerlich, and Barbara Gaidusek.

Our clubs had a Toys-far-Tots drive; we donated toys for children that otherwise wouldn't have a toy for Christmas. We had a very nice collection of toys.

A collection of money was taken to provide food for two needy families at Christmas.

The youth went caroling on December 20 We went to six homes and sang.

Those making the trip were Cynthia and Kathy Moore, Norma Hensel, Donna and Kay Gerlich, Barbara Gaidusek. John Engelke, Michael Kutni and Betsy Bessire. Mrs. Mazanec, Mrs. Bessire and Mr. Kutni went with us.

Remember our next meeting on Jan. 17. We will elect officers to serve during the next year.

The meeting was opened by the new President Sherrie Williams. She asked for the secretary and treasurer to give their reports. With the new business at hand came the plan of having a teenage dance. We decided we may have it on Valentine's Day. Music will be by the Convertibles of Waco.

Before the meeting started all the boys and girls who had merit books or point system sheets were supposed to have turned them in. If you are still not finished with yours and you would like to turn it in, you have one week to do so. Before the period is up you can turn it in to our Youth Leader, Sister Ruth Krizan.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our last meeting was held January 3, 1965. We hadd good attendance. We said the Pledge of Allegiance. The treasurer read her report. The door prize was won by Shirley Nemec.

Shirley Zahirniak has a birthday during this month.

On February 7 we will have a cake walk. Everyone bring a cake. We will also have a Valentine party. Everyone bring pastries for lunch.

Nominees for president of the Youth Club were Bernardette and Robert Kocurek. Bernadette was elected.

Patty Kocurek was elected vice president; Kathy Marek was elected secretary; Shirley Nemec was elected reporter; Rose Marek historian and Darlene Nemec treasurer.

I hope everyone does a good job for this year. Come to our next meeting.

10 oz. flour 7 oz. butter 4 oz. sugar 5 oz. ground almonds 2 egg yolks Vanilla Mix all ingredients together on a board. Work into a rather stiff dough.

Cut in small pieces, shape into crescents. Bake at 325 degrees about 20 minutes. When baked, roll them in powdered sugar flavored with vanilla bean. For better taste, keep crescents in cool place about 3 days before serving.

BRO. HUGO SCHEFCAK — NEW MEMBER OF PUBLICATION COMM.

After Bro. Paul Sablatura gave up his seat on the Publication Committee at the last convention in Waco, Brother Hugo Schefcak, of Dallas Lodge No. 130, was elected by the delegates to this committee. In order for the membership to know a little more about Bro. Schefcak, we bring you this special report. — Ed.) Hugo Schefcak was born November 13, 1885 in Velikov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia (at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). He came to America in 1902 and landed at the port of Galveston. After a few months' stay with relatives and an aunt in Granger and uncle Joe Svadlenak near Taylor, he left for Houston to live with his sister, Ruth, who found him a job in a German bakery in the Fifth Ward of Houston, with "Young's Bakery."

Brother Shefcak became a member of Lodge No. 88, Houston, in 1912.

Shortly after that he moved to Fort Worth, where he set up his bakery business, and transferred to Lodge No. 92 in that city. He worked hard and long for the good of Lodge No. 92. He was elected delegate to the Schulenburg Convention in 1920. He then moved to Ferris near Ennis, where he had bakeries. When the Depression hit in 1929, and all small bakeries had to shut down (bread sold for 3 cents a loaf), he moved to .Dallas.

He set up a new business in Dallas, specializing in the promotion and sale of a new type flour for making doughnuts, the first of its kind in the U.S. All the baker had to add was water

and yeast and he had "instant" doughnut dough. He transferred to Lodge No. 130, where he is still active to this day.

He has held various offices in Lodge Jaro; was elected as a delegate to six conventions. In the Hoiuston Convention, he was elected to the Building Committee, whose responsibility it was to purchase new building quarters for the Supreme Lodge, located shortly after in Temple. Of the original seven members of that committee, three have passed away: Brothers Matush, Stehlik. and Siptak.

Brother Schefcak was elected by acclamation to serve on the Publication Committee. The other two members of the committee are: Frances Olexa, chairman and Bro. Rudolph Troubil, manager of the SPJST Rest Home in Taylor. Bro. Schefcak resides at 1267 Harlandale, Dallas 16, Texas.

A Message from Brother Schefcak Brothers and Sisters: I want to say that the Publication Committee is more important than many of you may think. It is an independent body within the SPJST, and is not under the control of any individual or the Supreme Lodge. I assure you I will guard freedom of the press in your Vestnik, and that the editor serves the best interests of all the members. He is responsible to this committee and to no one else. The Supreme Lodge serves as an advisory body only when called upon to do so. Every member of the SPJST has the right to refer his or her complaints to the Publication Committee. Vojtech Hynais za deset let potom presidlil natrvalo do Prahy a stal se tu profesorem na malifske akademii.

Posledni jeho praci byla yYzdoba Pantheonu Narodniho musea. VelkY umelee, ktery po sobs zanechal tato nesmrtelna dila, zemfel v roce 1925.
