Je sice podoben Ceskemu posviceni —snad proto jej radi nazYvame americkYm posvicenim. — ale nevzalo syfij pfivod v posveceni chramu, nybrZ ve vdeenem srdci hrstky ptistehovalcti, kteri nalezli domov na bkezich noveho sveta. Roku 1620 ptistali u Plymouthske skaly a zaeali. teZai Zivot, neZ jak museli o vice neZ tri stoleti proZivati pionYti, kteri dobkvali prerie dalekeho zapadu. S poeatku jim nebyla ptiroda naklonena, pole jim nedavala hledanou skyvu chleba a do jejich skrovnYch domovfi se ykracial hlad. Sucho nieilo firodu a privadelo je v beznadejnost.

Pak ptiael vydatny deat', pole se zazelenala a ti oda byla zachranena, hlad byl odehnan od; dveti kolonistu. Vdee"ni Poutnici se radovali, modlili, ciaovali a hodovali na oslavu sveho zachraneni.

Avgak tehdejS1 retauratorska technika nebyla jeSte na pattiene vysi, aby toto vzacne dilo neznamYch mistru mobil odkrYt a citlive obnovit. Z vet gi easti byly tehdy sejmuty renesaneni ptemalby s vapennYm podkladem, ale restaurator dopinll retu gi a ptemalbami zbyt ky, ktere 1pely na pitvodnich vrstvach.

Tento hruby- zasah byl znovu upravovan na poedtku naS'eho stoleti. Jak bylo tehdy zvykem, pouZil restaurator ke sve praci kaseinove tempery, takZ'e, 0brazy silne ztmavly.

10 Fred ttemi léty provedl prof. B. SianskY podrobny prilzkuin payodnich maleb i rozsah a povahu pozdèjichdoplñku. Moderni fotograficke metody s pomoci postranniho svetla, ultrafialovYch a infradervenYch paprskit dokonale odhalily skladbu cele hmoty i nanesenych vrstev. Ukazaly moanost obnovit ptivodni goticke fresky bez podstatnYch zasahit. Nastala nekolikamesieni prace, pina napeti a fakostliveho oCekavani.

Prof. Slansky upevnil neldlive barevne a podkladove vrstvy. Sisal ve gkere pozdejSi doplriky, retu ge a tmely. Pod dvema vrstvami ptemaleb narazil na zbytky renesaneich fragmentil, ktere houZevnate 1pely na stenach a je Z bylo nutno jemne se gkrabat. Od podzimu r. 1960 at do lonskeho roku trvala usilovna prace na plo g e 5x2.5 metal, Cile vg ak bylo s Uspechem dosateno. Na zapadni stene marianske kaple skvi se dnes nadrerne goticke malby s apokaliptickYmi namery "Rodici Zena, leti na pouSt' prondsleclo yana sedmihlavYm drakem" a "2ena, sluncem odend" jako doklad vysoke Mo yne Ceske vYtvarne kultury v dobe vrcholiciho stredoveku.

Dalgi naroene restauratorske a konzervaeni prace provedl prof. SlanskY v uplynulYch mesicich na dvou polich nastennych maleb v marianske kapli: obnovil vYjev s andelskYmi chOry a apokalypticke jezdce. Nejthilaitej gi aspojit fragmenty °brazil v jeden kol souvislY celek byl spinen. S pomoci neutralni retuk a velmi presnym diferencovanim barevnych odstina padatilo se restaurovat namety tak, aby pasobily celistvYm dojmem.

Za.roveri byl ueinen pokus o sejmuti novodobYch premaleb na stenach schodigte ye velke veli Karl gtejna. V mistech, kde prof. SlanskY predpokladal, te zastaly zacho yany stare nastenne malby s namety svatovacla yske legendy od neznameho gotickeho mistra, provedl peelivou sonclaZ a chemicke zkougky barev a pojidel. K proslovu u Gettysburgu doSlo v krititke dobe americkYch dejin, kdy narod byl rozdelen na dva cposidni tdbory ideologicke. Na vysledku valky zaviselo jak zachovani Unie, tak i zruSeni otroctvi.

V dervenci 1963 priblitila se konfederadni armada Jihu az na. sto mil k Washingtonu. Tam, v mirne pa,horkate krajine, jinn od mestedka Gettysburgu, stretla se s hlavnim vojem uniove armady Severu. VetSi pa historikit uznava tuto bitvu za rothodnY moment obeanske valley. Konfederadni armada, utrpe ySi ohromne ztraty, ustoupila do Virginie. Mnoho Arneridanil z jihu i ze severu — naSlo posledni odpodinek u Gettysburgu.

THANKSGIVING - 1963 A SAD THANKSGIVING .. .

The following articles about the period of Thanksgiving were assembled and composed before the shattering news of President Kennedy's dastardly assassination in Dallas. I fear there is not much we can say here to ameliorate the grief and horror that decent people everywhere feel during this period. These are indeed times that try men's souls. It will be difficult to equate the President's murder with thoughts of Thanksgiving this season, but some way, somehow, we must extract from this terrible event, some feeling of thanksgiving that more people were not mortally wounded, that the new President is well and has assumed the reigns of orderly government, and that this great nation of ours will and must survive this deep loss. Every American, in his own way, and irrespective of religious affiliation, should utter prayers for the grief-stricken family of the dead President, and, in the same breath, pray that God, in his infinite mercy, will guide and help President Lyndon B. Johnson charter a rightful course in the troubled months ahead.

From these thoughts then, we may derive a measure of thanksgiving.

SO IT IS TRULY THANKSGIVING" From the days of yore long since passed when our founding fathers braved the ever-present dangers and deprivations of an unknown land in the search for the precious freedom to live and worship as they pleased, has today mushroomed into a civilization and symbol of power and peace that engulfs the emotions of freedom-loving people the world over; and whose every name strikes deep to swell with a surge of pride the heart of every man, woman and child wise enough to comprehend its full meaning — America.

THE SUPREME LODGE, SPJST, THE EDITOR, AND THE PUBLISHERS, EXTEND TO OUR GREAT AND WONDERFUL SPJST FRATERNAL FAMILY, THEIR BEST WISHES FOR A BOUNTIFUL A N D MEANINGFUL THANKSGIVING. It would be almost impossible for those living in this generation to fully visualize the unknown elements faced by the courageous pilgrims who landed on our Eastern shores, yet the keen perception of mankind to analyze appreciatively the significance of those thinks for which our forefathers lived, fought and died, shall never perish in the hearts of man.

As we pause today and count our many blessings as a nation, as individuals and as families, we can, well give thanks for the bountiful harvest garnered that is so much a vital part of any nation's existence; and for our family and friends that share the horn of plenty in our present-day way of life, which in itself would have seemed fantastic, if not impossible, and astounded even the most faithful and stout-hearted generations of long ago.

We give thanks for the blessings of today and every day — and the right to think and believe, to work and to play, to plan and prosper, and worship as we please! We can also be grateful within our hearts for the good will of our many friends and neighbors who Together with the many other reasons for being thankful this year, we are grateful for the patient, understanding, and cooperative spirit our readers have shown toward us this past year, sinve assuming the position of editor of your Vestnik. It has been a real pleasure serving you.

Today as we feast on the fruits of America's plenteous harvest, let us not forget the deeper significance of Thanksgiving. Let us send up a hymn of thankfulness for the many freedoms that are ours in this democracy in following the pathway that the teachings of God and the laws of mankind have provided us to guide our destiny throughout our short span of life on earth.

From humble beginnings, we, as a nation have progressed to a glqrious, prosperous present . . . to the place of plenty we enjoy; for the demobratic privileges and freedom of love and worship that enriched our lives.

Thanksgiving can and should mean so much to each of us. Let us pray that within our hearts we will never fail to be deeply thankful for all those riches of life we now have, notwithstanding whatever else the fortunes of fate have seen fit to grant us. No man, regardless of his own personal status in life, is ever completely without that for which he can indeed be thankful ... and in this .. . is truly Thanksgiving !

SPJSTTHE FIRST THANKSGIVING The water was too shallow to land the boat. But the harbor was well sheltered, and it looked like the kind of landing place they were seeking.

"Bring her alongside the rock!" said Capt. Miles Standish.

The tiny boat, its mast split in three places, turned its side to the gray December sea and drifted up against a great boulder. The intrepid Standish stepped over the gunwhale and planted his foot on the New England granite. The boulder was Plymouth Rock.

For the Pilgrims, it was "the end of the beginning." Behind lay persecu-

14 tion, exile — and the momentous decision to seek religious freedom in the uncharted New World. Ahead lay hardship, death — and immortality.

It was four days before Christmas when Standish and his small group of men went ashore at Plymouth. They returned to the Mayflower, anchored off Provincetown, with the good news that a site for the new settlement had been found.

On Dec. 26 the Mayflower. braving (high wintery winds. made a successful passage into Plymouth Harbor.

The Mayflower had set out for America on Sept. 16, 1620, with 102 passengers. On Nov. 19, land was sighted. A few days later the Pilgrims met in the cabin of the ship and drew up the famous "Mayflower Compact," (establishing themselves as a civic body under a government of law. It is one of the great documents in mankind's search for freedom.

The Pilgrims first winter is a tragic —and precious—page in American history. In "The Story of the Pilgrims," the group's sufferings are described.

"Before the winter was over, half the entire band had perished of disease, hunger, and exposure."

The dead were buried on nearby Cole's Hill, and grain was sown over the burial plot to conceal from the Indians how many of the band had died. It was feared that this knowledge might embolden the Indians to make an attack.

Early in March the incredibly cold winter finally began to recede. On March 26 another hopeful event took place when Samoset, grand sachem of the Monhegan Indians, entered the village exclaiming "Welcome!" Through him the Puritans became acquainted with Squanto, and these two Indians played an important role in the history of the colony.

They told the Pilgrims to plant Indian corn "when the oak leaves are as big as mouse ears," and to catch, fish to fertilize the soil. Thus the seeds were sown for the first Thanksgiving harvest.

Twenty-one men and "six large boys," the entire surviving able-bodied male working force of the colony, did the planting. They had no horses or other domestic animals. With heavy hoes they broke the earth, and planted 20 acres of corn. Then they sowed six more acres with wheat, rye, barley and peas.

It was a warm and bright summer, and the crops grew and thrived.

By this time Plymouth. Colony also boasted seven dwellings and a combined church and town meeting hall.

Not only did the Pilgrims enjoy a bountiful harvest, but the waters abounded with fish and the woods were filled with, deer and wild turkey.

Gov. William Bradford and the Plymouth Council deliberated gravely. It was fitting, they thought, to celebrate and give thanks for their good fortune.

The Pilgrims issued a formal invitation to Massasoit, grand sachem of the Pakanoket Indians, to join them in a feast of Thanksgiving. Massasoit arrived with 90 of his followers and stayed 'for three days. There was a great round of entertainment and feasting.

As with all Thanksgiving Days since that first celebration at Plymouth, it was an occasion that combined gaiety with solemnity. The devout Pilgrims added prayers of thanks to their feasting.

The days of suffering, however, were not yet over. Famine was to come to Plymouth again in succeeding winters.

But for the Pilgrims, once they had set foot on Plymouth Rock there was no thought of turning back. They came to build a society of free men in the inhospitable wilderness and this they were determined to do.

In later years, Gov. Bradford wrote in his famous History of Plymouth Plantation": "Out of small beginnings greater things have been produced. As one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone onto many."

He, of course, could not know that the light he helped to kindle would one day shine throughout the earth.

The first prayer of Thanksgiving ought to be a prayer of gratitude for the spirit and mood of thanksgiving itself. For without this spirit Thanksgiving is reduced from a holy day to a mere holiday. "Oh God, make us grateful" should be our first petition, for without gratitude life itself loses its savor.

There is a greediness in all of us, our appetites outrun our capacity, our grasp is greater than our need. There's never enough to satisfy our wants, we no sooner get something we've desired than our eyes are fixed on the next goal and the next. Ambition unlimited drives us from the cradle to the

Wednesday, NoVember 27, 1963 grave. We need the mood of thanksgiving, the spirit of gratitude, which will put a limit on our greed and set a boundary for our ambition. John Greenleaf Whittier said it so well: "The bounty overruns our due, The fullness shames our discontent."

The minute we actually pause to count our blessings, we realize how manifold they are, how truly blessed we have been, and how little it really takes to make us happy.

We have so much more for which to be grateful than those who instituted the Thanksgiving festival. Whet has become for us a time of feasting, was for the Pilgrims a meagre Meal indeed, a few grains of corn, a little wild game, some cranberries pltrcked from wild bushes, and that was about all. It was eaten at a rough hewn table in the wilderness. Almost half of their party was dead, and many more ill. How little they had to be grateful for, yet how gratefully they gave thinks.

But we—our granaries overrun with food, our standard of living, of health, of education, of progress, is the highest in the world; There is no limit to the goods which we produce and consume.

"The fullness shames our discontent."

Let us learn to be grateful. Let us bow our heads at our tables next Thursday and ask God for the spirit of thanksgiving that it may be a truly holy day.

Fraternally, Mrs. Edward Svoboda —SPJSTLODGE WOODROW WILSON NO. 146, GALVESTON Dear Brothers and Sisters: I apologize for not writing sooner to express my appreciation for the attendance and full cooperation you showed us during our District V meeting held in our fair city, but, instead of one thing to talk about I have loads of things to say.

It is with great pleasure that I extend many thanks to the officers of the Supreme Lodge, the District officers, the many out-of-town friends and members, and last but not least, the Galveston members of Lodges 146 and 62, and their many friends. I certainly wish to thank all the youth and adults who participated in the young program to make it successful.

I am looking forward to many more such gatherings.

We had several nice gifts donated: a pair of beautiful wall plaques, made and donated by Bro. Emil Denke and Mrs. Denke; a lovely necklace and earring set donated by Sister Skrabanek. !Sister Maxine .Sercik, the District V Youth Director, donated a transistor radio that was raffled off with, the proceeds donated to our own Youth Club, which is still in its in1aney. We also wish to thank all who donated pastry and aided us in any way.

On Sunday, December 1, Lodge No, 146 will hold its annual Christmas party at 2:30 p.m. at the American Legion Home, 1503-23rd Street (Tremont St.). and we wish to have ALL of our members present for the gala event. Santa will pay a visit to the youngsters, so please make a date.

Prior to the party we will have the election of officers for the coming year.

I do hope we will have a large attendance of our Youth so we can elect officers for the coming year, and get busy and be active. There are a lot of possibilities and potential in Galveston, but we need action. We plan on naming a male assistant youth leader to ,help with and train our boys to be better leaders and "just boys."

SOKOL FORT WORTH Dear Members and Friends: It's time to remind all our members, about our, next Sokol meeting, which will be held Friday, November 29th, at 7:30 p.m., at the Sokol hall. We would like to see-more of our members attend these meetings.

Also our next dance will be on November 30th; music will be furnished by Johnnie Sebetka and the Peppermints. Everyone come out and have a good time.

Everyone had a good time at our masquerade dance. Quite a few came in costume. Prizes were given for the best costumes in the adult group the winners were: first prize of $10 Mr. and Mrs. Paul Flemming; second prize $5 Mr. and Mrs. Robbin; and third prize Mr. and â&#x20AC;˘Mrs. Albert Boenisch.

The children's group: first prize of $2, Alfred Janca; second prize $1.50, J. C. Mason; third prize $1., Rodney Rosenour. Our door prize was a nice turkey, which was won by Mrs. John Bartok.

At this time I would like to thank all of the ladies for donating cakes for our cake walk and specifically Mrs. Josephine Prochaska who took care of the cake walk for us.

I would like to mention also that Mrs. Anna Milan donated $5. to the Sokol hall, in memory of Tom Matejka, who passed away recently.

Be sure and remember our meeting because it will be time to plan our Christmas party. Until next time.

WEST LODGE NO. 54 Dear Sisters and Brothers: We held our regular meeting this past Sunday; it had been postponed for two Sundays due to reunions held in our hall. We had a very nice crowd and the meeting was interesting. Some unfinished business was transacted. and new business was brought up.

The meeting opened by saying the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read, and various letters were read by Secretary, Brother Frank Cocek.

No one is on the sick list in hospitals, although it was mentioned that Brother Ben Vanzura stepped on a nail abdut ten days ago and still is not able to walk as he should. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Veronica Holecek, wife of Lumir Holecek, joined our Lodge. We welcome you among us and hope to see you at our meetings, which are held the first Sunday of every month.

Brother Emil Popp brought with him his Kodak and took several pictures of members who were at the meeting.

At a later date he will show these slides, along with pictures which' Bro. and Sister Popp took while an their European trip this past summer.

A committee consisting of Brothers Robert Cervenka, George Kaeir, and Sisters Frances Popp, Rosie Cocek, and Bennie Soukup were appointed to look into the possibility of entertaining the delegates during the SPJST Convention, which will be held in Waco in June, 1964.

A Christmas party will be held in December; the date will be set at our next meeting, which will be Dec. lst.

Gifts will be exchanged and Santa will be on hand.

As I mentioned before, we had a very nice crowd at this meeting. Let's hope all of you come to the meeting on Dec. 1st. This will be an important meeting because delegates to the convention will be elected, and election of officers will be held. .So everybody come on Dec. 1st at 2 p.m.

LODGE 130, DALLAS, Dear Brothers and Sisters: Our regular meeting was held November 3rd. It was fairly well attended, since our youth hosted the members and visitors from Lodge 84. The supper was free and was deliciously

Wednesday, November 27;1.90 prepared. Our youth are appreciative of the help they received from the adults in their various projects.

A discussion was held regarding our lodge banner, which the lodge agreed to purchase in our last meeting at a cost of $80. All of the members were invited by the president to submit their sketches or drawings as to what they think the banner should look like, ,so that it might appeal to the entire membership, and would represent our lodge, "Jaro," for many years to come.

Our representatives to the AmericanCzech. Festival Committee reported on the very successful outcome of this year's festival, both as to the number of visitors and financial profit, and the situation is a further improvement over last year's. Here is the latest information on the Czech course to be offered here: the first meeting of the first class of students, both young and adult, took place on November 16th in the Great American Insurance Building, 2020 Live Oak, across from the Sheraton Hotel, third floor, where the cafeteria is located. This first session lasted from 10 until 12 noon, and was mostly for organizational purposes.

The number attending was greater than expected, and it was announced that the next class session is to be held on November 23rd, some place, from 9:30 until 11:30 am., provided a number of Mikula's Czech textbooks arrive from the Supreme Lodge, SPJST. If anyone desires any information on the course, they may still contact Sister Josie Kankrlik, 6831 East Grand Avenue, telephone DAvis 7-0772.

Our friends from the Hlahol Dramatic Club in Houston presented the Czech play, "Ze starych inlynu" on November 10th, at Lodge 84. The hall was filled. After an introductory speech by Bro. Cyril Pokladnik, the small children's singing group, tutored by Sister Bessie Valcik, presented a number of Czech songs. I would like to state here that 35 years ago I used to hear the remark that Czech would not be spoken anywhere in Texas after about 50 years, since the flood of immigra tion was coming to a halt. This assertion has been proven to be completely in error, with the efforts of such people as Sister Valcik.

Our long-time member, Stanley Hulovec, left suddenly on a hurried trip to Czechoslovakia. ho had been preparing to visit that country for about a year, hut he received the sad news that his brother is gravel, ill, and for him to come immediately. He

Wednesday, November 27, 1963 will return in about two weeks. We wish him a safe journey there and back.

Eorthers and sisters, we are approaching an important occasion — that of our meeting wherein we elect our officers for the coming year, and delegates to next year's convention, to be held in Waco June 15th. This convention will be a very important one, in my opinion, because several items and points will be discussed, regarding the future growth of our SPJST. We need sharp, reasonable, honest (not selfish) delegates, who look to the future progress of our Order, and for the good of the entire membership, children and orphans — not for their own personal gain. I read in the Vestnik the complaint about some of the delegates sleeping during convention proceedings. I believe someone is making a mountain out of a mole hill. I have been to • six SPJST conventions, and I hope to go to the seventh, and I never saw a delegate sleep through the, entire proceedings — at least, not at the table of delegates representing our District III. When you have almost 250 delegates in a gathering such as ours, even the person in the heartiest of health will be overcome by a touch of drowsiness.

Don't forget, brothers and sisters, and come to our very important meeting on December 1st, and vote for the delegate who has served you well in the past.

Fraternally yours, John Stasa, Secretary SOKOL HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: With winter pretty well on its way, we at Sokol Houston are plannin g our first jaternice (liver sausage) sale on Sunday, December 8th. This will be only two weeks from Christmas and a good time for you to stock up and surprise the family on Christmas Day with a jaternice breakfast, or you could use the sausage as gifts. Remember, our sausage is made at our Sokol kitchen from an old Czech, recipe, using only the best ingredients.

Another date for you to remember will be December 31st, the New Year's Eve dance. We have hired a very popular orchestra, whom I expect most of you will know. I will have more details on the affair next week. You will remember that last year we were quite full and even a greater crowd is expected this year. Make your plans early so as not to be left out.

It is my pleasure to mention and inform you of one of our former gymnasts and member who has made the top in her field of endeavor. She is the very talented ballerina Andrea Vodelldial, daughter of Carrie Vodehnal of Houston. Just last month Andrea led the National Ballet Company when it opened its season in Washington, and she is also being featured in the current issue of Dance Magazine with a biographical summary.

Andrea has overcome many disappointments and undergone years of

17 training to become a leading dancer.

For seven years Andrea trained under a former dancer of the Russian Imiperial School, Alexander Kolchelovsky. After graduation from high school, Andrea moved to New York and trained with the Ballet Russe School, and in 1957 she was accepted for the Ballet Russe corps. In the third season with the company, Andrea received solo roles. From the Ballet Russe she gained more and complicated assignments, joined the American Festival Ballet and then the National Ballet.

Last summer another dissapointment confronted Andrea when she was hospitalized with, acute appendicitis. During her recovery, Andrea visited our ,gym and on numerous occasions worked out with us. It was at this time that I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea whom I hadn't seen for about twenty years, when the Sokols were working at the Stefanik Lodge in Houston. I remember that Andrea performed at many of our programs. She is a very charming, loveable, shy and !interesting person. Although she is still in her early twenties she has made excellent progress in the field of ballet and promises to be one of the nation's leading ballet performers. She is very energetic, persistent in her training, with the will to succeed. We all wish Andrea the best in the future years and we all are looking forward when she will again be performing at Houston.

We have a nice place to have our meetings now, so I hope that all our members will attend the meetings in greater number and we can have our socials and get-togethers after the meetings. Lunch will be served after this meeting. So much for the meetings.

Now I will try to say a few words regarding the opening and dedication of our new hall. (Bro. Belicek made some comments on the celebration in Czech in last week's issue of the Vestnik). I would say it was a great sue-

VtSTNfIC cess. As our Mayor. Mr. Kuhlman told me after the celebration, "Holland never did have so many people at one gathering as this one." It was a pleasure to see so many of you sisters and brothers and friends from different parts of Texas to come and be with us on that day.

I want to take this opportunity through the medium of the Vestnik to again thank the members of the Choral Group from Lodge 84, Dallas, for the wonderful singing, (We are still getting comments on it from members and non-members alike). Our sincere thanks to the members of the Beseda dance group and the party that accompanied them from Lodge 88, Houston, who nhartered a bus to come and perform on our program, and help make the day a happy one. Thanks to you, Sister and Brother Rudy Sefcik and the rest of your group from Lodge 88. To the Supreme Lodge officers, Brother Ma,rek for his dedication address and to Brother Hejny for helping our master of ceremonies for the evening , (and what a hectic evening he had keeping the large crowd quiet).

Thanks to Editor Morris who made several trips there to Holland to take pictures and the nice writeup that he gave Lodge 80; to the rest of the Supreme Lodge officers present that day; to everyone who came to make the occasion the success it was. And last, to our local members, especially to the ladies in the kitchen. I want to commend you one and all for a jab so well done.

I hope that all our members of Lodge 80 will take a real interest in the lodge activities since we built this new edifice. If you will do this we will go forward as we have in the past.

Dear Readers, On November 16, 1963, Lodge Stelanik 142 Youth Club held a dance and turkey dinner. Music for the darcce was by the "Pleak Playboys" It was a great success. Everyone had an, enjoyable evening.

There are a few people we would like to thank. First, Mrs. Anna Kovar who donated a lovely scarf to the Youth Club. Second, our chief cook, Mrs. Emilie Hamala for the wonderful job she did in the kitchen. Thank you very much! Thanks to Mr. Rudy Valentine who donated a turkey to us. Mr. Valentine is always helping the Youth Club. Thanks to the women who baked the turkeys for us; Mrs. Lueckemeyer, Mrs. Recek, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs.. Cerny, Mr. Linhart, Mrs. Melnar, and Mrs. Beyer. A big thanks to the carvers who did such a good job, Mr. Kristoff and Mr. Melnar. Wednesday, November 27, 1963 EXCERPTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE FOURTH REGULAR QUARTERLY MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE, SPJST Held at the office of the Supreme Lodge, Temple, on October 11, 1963 The meeting convened at 8:15 a.m.

All members were present.

President Marek asked all present to stand for one minute of silent tribute in memory of the death of Director Vitek's mother.

It was resolved to pass a resolution of respect upon the death of Sister Terezie Vitek.

Secretary Urbanovsky read t h e minutes, there being no corrections, the minutes were adopted as read.

President Marek handed out his written report and referred to it making his oral report with reference to the number of District Meetings and lodge meetings and celebrations he attended in the last quarter.

President Marek handed out the program of the coining Texas Fraternal Congress Convention, which was held at the Baker Hotel in Dallas, Oct. 24, 25, and 26th.

President Marek read a letter written by Margaret Kutac to R. J. Bartosh, concerning the sad condition of the Slavonic Department at the Texas University, stating that only 9 students registered for Czech courses.

Attorney Kacir commented on Margaret Kutac's letter and referred to Mrs. Patricia Bryan's letter in the Oct. 9th issue of the Vestnik, requesting all members of the Supreme Lodge to forward any historical material concerning the early Czeshs that they may possess to Sister Bryan.

Vice-President Hejny referred to his written report which he handed out in the meeting, and pointed out that during the last quarter we received 296 applications for $692,000.00 of life insurance.

Vice-President Hejny reported that 27 organizers attended the insurance seminar which was held at the Hawn Hotel 19th-22nd of August.

Secretary Urbanovsky read a letter from the American Sokol Educational and Physical Culture, organization requesting our Order to become one of the sponsors of the Sokol Centennial Commemorative Year Activities. The Sokol Organization is endeavoring to get the U. S. Postal Department to issue a postage stamp to commemorate the centennial celebration in.

Inasmuch as Director Skrabanek had an important personal engagement he was excused from the meeting at 2:45 p.m.

Attorney Kacir checked with the Directors on outstanding loans which were committed and had not been consemated.

Director Sralla ireported that he wa v, approached by several members of three lodges in the Victoria area concerning the possibility of merging into one lodge. President Marek was requested to contact the officers of these lodges concerning the merger.

Director Eralla invited all members of the Supreme Lodge to the District Meeting of District 6 at Hillje on Nov. 3rd.

Director Vitek thanked the Supreme Lodge for the floral offering for his mother's funeral and for attending the funeral.

Director Vitek invited all members of the Supreme Lodge to the dedication ofthe Lodge No. 80 Hall at Holland, Texas.

Director Holasek stated that the July meeting was the first meeting that he had missed since he has been a Director of the Supreme Lodge, and that he regretted that he was unable to attend. He thanked Directors Kuberm and Sralla for making the appraisals in his district during his absence. ,

who ,died on Wednesday, October 2, 1963, at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Funeral Services were held at the First Methodist Church in 'Caldwell, Texas, on Saturday, October 5, 1963, with the church filled to capacity. Rev. S. Burton Smith, pastor of the First Methodist Church in Caldwell, officiated. Interment was in the Caldwell Masonic Cemetery under the direction of the HarveySchiller Funeral Home.

Brother Philp was the Burleson County Treasurer from 1948 until his death. Brother Philp served with the

U. S. Army during World War II as an engineer, and participated in the invasion of Salerno, Anzio, Southern France, Alsace and Germany. He was decorated with seven Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead, Silver S t a r, French Croix de Guerre with one Bronze Star. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, New Tabor SPJST Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Rotary Club, American Legion, VFW, County Treasurers Association.

To the loved ones and to our esteemed and respected long-time member, we wish eternal rest, and may his memory be honored unto eternity. Survivors are his wife, son, and daughter.

He was born at Taylor, on August 30, 1908, and had lived in Manor for the past 21 years. On November 7, 1933 he married Miss Agnes Fronek, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters,Mrs. Louis D. Heimann, and Mrs. Roy L. Steger, of Austin; live sons, John B. Pokorny, of Pflugerville, Edward E. Pokorny of Sall Marcos, Milbert F. Pokorny, Raymond J. Pokorny, and Daniel A. Pokorny of Manor; a sister, Mrs. Frank Michalik of Granger; two brothers, Anton F. Pokorny of Round Rock, and Julius E. Pokorny of Manor, Texas.

SLOVAK ROBIN HOOD LIVES ON

The Liptov district criminal court sentenced Juraj Janosik to being hooked by the hip to the gallows. Thus the most famous of Slovak brigands, who was executed 250 years ago this year died as a criminal. The common people, however, made him a symbol of the fight for the rights of the oppresed and wove a web of legends around him.

In the century before Janosik wandered through the Slovak mountains, ambushing and robbing his victims, a deep change had taken place in the feudal way of life. The nobility ceased to let their land to the serfs, but instead joined these plots into big fields

Thus the villagers were deprived of one source of livelihood. At the same time the landlords asked higher taxes of them, and more labor on the feudal manor; their already low standard of living declined still further. Often the peasants had to spend six days working in the fields owned by the nobility, which left them almost no time to take care of their'own affairs.

They were no longer allowed to pasture their cattle in the fields where their ancestors' cows and sheep had grazed from time immemorial; nor could they gather wood or hunt game in the forests which until then had belonged to all.

The life of the village people had become unbearable, and recourse to the courts and appeals to the Emperor brought them nothing. They sometimes rebelled and left their villages, in the hope that they would find better conditions elsewhere. Imprisonment and torture were the common lot.

No wonder that many sought a way out by taking refuge in the inaccessible mountain forests. They turned brigands and made this way of life their individual revenge for the injustice they had suffered. These Slovak Robin Hoods held up not only the feudal lords and their clerks but the merchants and innkeepers who charged exorbitant interest on the money they lent the poor. The common people honored these brigands as heroes and helped them. They gave them food, offered them shelter, and warned them of danger. The outlaws in return often punished the feudal lords for the wrong they had done their serfs, and they were generous to the poor.

Many Slovak brigands have their place in the memory of the people, but Juraj Janosik has become the central figure, the national hero of popular resistance to feudalism. Imagination has attributed to him many superhuman deeds and endowed him with mystical qualities.

It is said that When Janosik's mother died his father was absent from manorial labor so that he could bury her. For this he was beaten to death, and the story goes that it was this experience which turned Janosik into an outlaw who took from the rich and gave to the poor, whom feudal lords dreaded and who helped make the life of the serfs easier.

According to legend, Janosik was invincible and invulnerable, thanks to a belt which a fairy had given him and

vEsTiNt IC from which he drew such strength, that he could stand up to whole regiment. He also had a Valaska (a longhandled hatchet) which dealt blows by itself when he ordered it to.

There are many tales of how he got the upper hand over the feudal lords and distributed gifts to the poor. He is said to have appeared with his companions in the midst of a mansion banquet, to have fooled the strongest guards and escaped from all snares and traps. All these stories praise Janosik's bravery, presence of mind, wit, magnanimity, inventiveness, his sympathy for the poor, his comradeship, and above all his invincibility.

Because it was known that Janosik ended on the gallows, the poets' imagination had to deal with this fact. Thus we have the story that Janosik was betrayed by an old crony who had yielded to bribery. She advised his pursuers to cut his magic belt and throw peas under his feet. But what about his magic valaska? The folk legends say that the feudal lords locked it behind twelve iron doors.

When Janosik, on the gallows, called on it for help, it cut through eleven of these doors while he still lived; alas, It got through the twelfth one too late.

But it did not remain in the hands of the ruling lords. It jumped into the air, and somewhere in the mountains cut itself into a beech tree, there to wait for another Janosik.

Since then all these stories have been embroidered in cloth, printed on glass and pottery, carved in wood, danced and sung, by thousands of Slovak folk artists. They have inspired modern music and ballet and most recently a feature-length film, just released to Czechoslovak cinema houses.

The first recording of Josef Haydn's "Concerto in C minor for violin, cello and orchestra," which was thought to have been lost for almost two-hundred years, has been issued. A stereo record of the work played by the Prague Radio Orchestra conducted by Alois Klima and Professor Milos Sadlo as soloist is now available. The concerto was discovered by the Prague musicologist Oldrich Pulkert in the archives of the National Museum in 1961. Its first public presentation was given at the 1962 Prague Spring Music Festival by the Prague Radio Orchestra and Milos Sadlo under the baton of the British conductor John Mackerras, a former student of the Prague Conserv-

23 atory. The concerto which was probably written in 1765 is considered one of the composer's best works of that period. The authenticity of the anonymous score has been confirmed by Dr. George Feder, Director of the Haydn Institute in Cologne on Rhine.

• • The Prague Chamber Orchestra has just returned from a 10-day tour in Wales. The orchestra gave concerts in Bristol and other Welsh; towns and on TV. Vera Soukupova, who was soloist at the concerts will give a song recital in Cardiff early in November and will make recordings for the British Broadcasting Company. The Prague Chamber Orchestra is scheduled to leave for a concert tour at the beginning of next month. It will visit the German Federal Republic and later Austria.

• • The exhibit of the works of the Brazilian painter Mercedes Masser was opened in Prague on October 25. The lexthibition shows pictures portraying Brazilian folklore, customs, a n d dances.

Antonin Snejdarek, head of the Modern History Department of the Historical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, left for Italy on October 25. He is the guest of the Italian Society for International Cultural Relations and will lecture an the Munich agreement and recent Czechoslovak history in Rome and other cities in Italy.

• • The first night performance of the Czechoslovak "Magic Lantern," during its present visit to Brussels was highly appreciated by Brussels press. The papers note the extraordinary character of the performance. "Le Peuple" writes on the triumphant return of the "Magic Lantern" artists to Brussels, where they had scored immense success during the 1958 World. Exhibition.

The paper highly appreciates the staging and artistic standard of the performance and says that four pairs of eyes would be necessary to see everything at a time and not miss anything from the beauty of the performance.

• • 25th Anniversary of Slovak Technical University in Bratislava The Slovak Technical University in Bratislava celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding on October 22.

During that time it has grown from a faculty with 70 students to an ins-

24 titution with four departments and an enrollment of 13,000 students.

Ten thousand of its graduates are helping in the building of Slovakia and Cechoslovakia. Under the socalled "Slovak State" (during the war) it had an avera ge number of 30 graduates a 3 car. Between 1945 and 1948 the number .2.rew to 100 — and now it has reach( , 1 1,000 a lyear. The University is tr be further expanded and the numbcr of students to be raised substant,ally.

A new building which will house the Engineering Faculty of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava was officially opened in. Bratislava on the occasion of the 25th aniversary of the University.

TV TRADE FAIR HELD IN BRNO The first International Film and TV Trade Fair — Film Forum — was opened in Brno on November 4. Eightyeight foreign film companies, more than 120 producers, distributors, and members of film selection commissions took part in the forum.

Its purpose is to collect the largest number of foreign films and show them to representatives of film companies from 26 countries during its two-week duration," said Director of Czechoslovak Film Export Ladislav Kachtik.

During the film trade fair more than 200 full-length and some 300 short films will be shown from the USSR, Poland, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria; Italy, France, USA, Great Britain, West Germany, South America, Japan and Czechoslovakia. The participants will decide on the purchase of films during the forum.

The Moravian capital was chosen for the film forum because its trade fair grounds are easily adaptable for the film review and its pavilions are convenient for housing cinemas, lounges, offices and assembly halls.

Czechoslovak Film Export will present some of its new full-length productions — "Tightrope" by No Novak, "On Something Else" by Vera Chytilova (winner of the main prize at the international film festival in Mannheim) the film version of Antonin Dvorak's opera "Rusalka" and Vojtech Jasny's film "One Day a Cat." (Export of "One Day a Cat" is a record in Czechoslovak film history. It has been sold to practically all countries. Director V. Jasny is now working on its synchronisation in New York).

ELLIS COUNTY GOLD STAR WINNERS ARE SPJST MEMBERS Patricia Trojacek, a 15-year-old member of the Ennis Community 4-H Club and Larry Laznovsky, 18, of the Central High Community Club received the Gold Star Awards at the annual Ellis County; 4-H Achievement Banquet held November 16th in Waxahachie. These awards are presented each year to the county's most outstanding boy and girl 4-H Club members.

The 1963 winners were selected by a committee of adult leaders and extension agents on the basis of their leadership abilities and overall participation and accomplishment in local, disand statewide club activities.

She has been in 4-H work for seven years and has participated in many contests. She has won numerous awards at County, District, and State Elimination Contests. She has won many ribbons in area and county Fairs and Livestock Shows. Patricia has served as Secretary, Reporter, and Vice-President of the Ennis CoMmunity 4-H Club. Larry, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Laznovsky, Route 1, Ennis, has for many years given outstanding method demonstrations at County and District Elimination Contests. At the 1963 State 4-H Roundup at Texas A. and M. College he was a member of the 2nd place Field Crops Team. During his nine years of 4-H work, Larry has received awards for showing beef cattle and swine at local and area-wide shows. He has held the offices of reporter, council delegate, and president of his local club. A 1963 graduate of Ennis High School, Larry now attends the Texas Institute of Technology in Dallas. For many years he has been active in Sokol activities, attending many national meets. Larry is a member of SPJST Lodge No. 135.

The Gold Star winners and their parents were honored at a banquet at Arlington State College, November 21.

LODGE NO. 54, WEST Dear Readers, We sure had a lot of rain here at Cottonwood. We've started wearing coats and sweaters on these cool days.

Thanksgiving Day will be here and then Christmas. I also started taking guitar lessons at Chuck Harding's in Waco, and two weeks ago I started playing basketball. I cant keep up but I'm trying. We had a homecoming game at West Trojan Field. Reicher played the Mustangs and they won.

But we were playing against the tallest kids! I had my hair done for the game, at my aunt's beauty shop in West Mary's Beauty Shop. We took pictures of the cheerleaders, football players and pep squad. There were so many of us that we took four or five pictures.

Our next meeting will be on December first. Everyone please come, because there will be election of officers.

All we can do is just wish they could come more often. We have lots of fun together. We have many parties throughout the year; all kinds of games and surprises. You never know what we will whip up next.

Another reminder to you is about your merit books and points system sheets in the contest. You must have them finished and turned in by our January meeting. Then, I have to send them off for further checking in the District contest, so let's all get busy and do good for a proud showing.

Here is some more good news: Our Mother Lodge is planning on adding to our hall and we are promised a nice quiet room for our club meetings and games. This sounds like we will have still more fun, and better times in the years to come.

Do you still remember that we will draw names at our next meeting, Dec. 1, for our Christmas party, Dec. 15?

THIS WEEK AT THE SUPERMARKET Whatever the Thanksgiving weather, the traditional holiday foods will be in great abundance, says Mrs. Gwendolyne Clyatt, consumer marketing specialist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Typical "specials" being featured are turkeys, beef, pork, apples, rice, cooking greens and cauliflower. This year's turkey crop is only slightly larger than that of a year ago, and prices will be about the same in most areas. Some stores are promoting holiday foods with special prices on turkeys.

Mrs. Clyatt suggests that buyers of turkeys under 12 pounds allow 3/4 to a pound per serving. If birds weigh more than 12 pounds, allow to 3/4 pounds per serving. The actual number of servings depends on the quality of the turkey, correct cooking and carving skill.

SHOP FOR THESE FOOD ITEMS Biggest produce news this week is in citrus fruits, reports Texas A. and M. University consumer marketing specialists. Tangelos and tangerines have made their appearance in local markets, and quality of all citrus appears to be excellent. However, supplies are shorter than last year, so prices reflect this smaller supply.

Another suggestion for holiday menus is cranberries. Apples, grapes, bananas and pears are other good fruit choices.

The production of edible tree nuts is expected to break records this season, with the pecan crop likely to be the largest ever recorded, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture.

Nut prices should be relatively low in comparison with past seasons, and homemakers may want to freeze some for later use.

WILD RICE, COMPANION TO TURKEY A casserole of wild rice is a gracious accompaniment for the t raditional Thanksgiving turkey. Wild rice has long been a gourmet companion for fowl, whether it be pheasant or turkey.

To prepare this epicurean version of wild rice, wash and soak 2 cups of wild rice. If possible, let it soak overnight.

Boil the rice in 1 quart of salted water until almost tender. Drain the rice.

Place it in a casserole.

A 1% quart porcelain enameled casserole with a gray Fiesta design is ideal for this festive dish because it can go from the oven to the table and is fancy enough for the party.

Wild Rice 'N' Mushroom Sauce Add one cup of turkey stock to the rice in the bake and serve dish. The stock can be made by boiling the turkey giblets and neck in water. Bake covered in 350 F. oven for one hour.

About 1/2 hour before serving, mix one can of condensed mushroom soup with one cup of sour cream. Spoon the mixture over the wild rice and bake uncovered for 1/2 hour longer. Serve hot in casserole. This gourmet edition of Wild Rice 'N' Mushroom sauce serves eight.

CARVING THE TURKEY IN SIX EASY STEPS Whether you dream of being a chessboard strategist, crack shot of the hunt or "master carver" of the family circle, you needn't be resigned to the costly mistake of apprenticeship — if you learn the rules beforehand!

The turkey carving "king," at least, can surely be saved some embarrassing moments if for the forthcoming holidays he is expertly primed with carving instructions. Strangely enough, the first vital lesson in the art of carving begins before the bird ever goes from pan to platter to table. Immediately upon coming from the oven, allow Mr. Turkey to "set" undisturbed 15-20 minutes . . . this permits the meat to firm up just enough for easier and prettier carving.

Then when the bird comes to the table the carver proceeds as follows:

1. Place the turkey with legs to right of carver.

2. Bend back a leg with left hand and cut away from body.

3. Sever thigh from drumstick; slice drumstickmeat by cutting downward.

4. With fork astride breast, cut down sharply on joint which joins wing to body.

5. Where wing was, cut thin slices of white meat working up to breast bone.

6. Repeat same carving instructions on other side of turkey.

MINCE MEAT PIE DRESSES UP

THANKSGIVING MEALS As American as Thanksgiving itself is mince meat pie. From the time this lucious dessert graced the first Thanksgiving feast table over 300 years ago it has led the list of harvest favorites.

Now we come to a modern variation — Gold Crest Pie. The name is derived from the addition of cling peaches in the filling and as a garnish. What a pretty picture for your holiday table — a delicious pie topped with swirls of flavored whipped cream with delicate golden peach slices nestled in the mounds.

Gold Crest Pie 1 can (1 pound) cling peach slices 1 1/2 cups mince meat 1/4 cup granulated sugar 11/2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind lteaspoon brown sugar 1/2 cup whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1 baked 9-inch pie shell Drain syrup from peaches into saucepan. Reserve 6 to a peach slices for garnish; chop remainder and add to syrup along with mince meat, granulated sugar, cornstarch and lemon rind. Mix well. Bring to full boil over medium heat stirring constantly until thickened and syrup is clear. Turn into pie shell; cool thoroughly. Just before serving whip cream with brown sugar and spice; spoon over pie in wide border. Garnish with reserved peach slices. Makes one (9-inch) pie.

Note: For two pies, use 1 can (1 pound 13 ounce) cling peach slices, 1 jar (1 pound 12 ounce) mince meat, and double amounts of remaining ingredients above.

A drycleaner administers professional first aid by using a National Institute of Drycleaning prescription.

First the garment or napkin is drycleaned to remove all oily and greasy substances. The albuminous part of the stain still remains, however. So your cleaner uses an enzyme to digest it.

This makes the albumen water-soluble, so the drycleaner that applies natural detergent and blushes away the remainder of the stain with a steam gun.

Cranberry stains cause a sugar as well as a dye problem. This can be difficult, but your professional drycleaner has a remedy. He will appreciate it if you get your cranberry stains to him promptly before they set, says the specialist.

SPJSTFAMILY BREAKDOWN UNDERMINING NATION "Family breakdown is today eating away at the heart and core of the structure of our nation. Other less important problems are making bigger headlines, but family breakdown, like termites, is undermining the strength Of our nation."

These were the words of Mrs. Edith Deen, Fort Worth author and former newspaperwoman, as she spoke to the Texas Congress of parents and Teachers convention delegates in Austin recently.

Mrs. Deen explained oftentimes there is moral breakdown at the core and added, "This erosion of principle could rapidly destroy our greatness, for nations are built by people of enormous energy and self-discipline."

The author cited causes of family breakdown as: change from rural to urban society; divorce; the industrial revolution; manner of living, with congested apartments in heavily popu lated areas taking the place of homes.

She said recreation has become external to family living; that indifferent baby sitters take the place of grandparents or uncles and aunts; that the younger generations seem to have little uderstanding of family continuity.

Mrs. Deen spoke on the Family Story in Bible Times.

She spoke of the Biblical family's thought of marriage as being divinely instituted, of regard of children as a heritage from God, of 'reverence of motherhood, of the important role of father to family as teacher and guardian to his family's spiritual riches.

"Today, looking back upon centuriee of family worship, it becomes clear that a general restoration of family worship would deepen individual lives and enrich home life," the speaker concluded.

For Your Information: MYSTERIES. OF MEASUREMENT Next time you look at a road map, or walk around the block, or read about a missile being fired with uncanny precision — give a thought to the mysteries of measurement which make it all possible.

Scientists at Keuffel and Esser Co., the world's largest producer of engineering equipment and, supplies, are today working on complex new measuring instruments, which determine angles and distances to incredible acuracies. But ancient man used the most convenient measuring devices available parts of his body: The cubit (20.5 inches) is man't oldest measurement.

It roughly represents the distance between the elbow and the end of the middle finger. and was first used 7,000 years ago.

The names of today's units indicate the rude measurements from which they originated. "Mile is from the Latin mila passuum, meaning "1,000 paces," each pace being about five feet — a double steps "Inch" , is from the Latin Unclia, "twelfth part." "Acre" is from a word meaning "field."

The pound, roughly equivalent to the old Roman libra (from which it derived the abbreviation "lb."), was long defined as the weight of 7,680 grains of wheat. Hence the "grain" is still the smallest unit of weight in today's common systems.

The Romans had standards for their weights and measures which they kept in a temple in Rome. But when the

Empire fell 1,50.0 years ago, these standards were lost. In the Middle Ages, almost every town, and every guild in the town, had its own system of weighing and measuring things.

A good example of the inconvenience caused by the lack of invariable standards is this 16-century surveyor's method of measuring a foot.

"Stand at the door of a church on Sunday and bid 16 men to stop, tall ones and small ones, as they happen to pass out when, the service is finished; then make them put their left feet one behind the other, and - the length thus obtained shall be a right and lawful rod to measure and survey the land with, and the 16th part of it shall be a right and lawful foot."

The English yard was established by Henry I as the distance from the point of his nose to the end of his thumb.

In 1324 the inch was declared to be the length of three dry barleycorns (grains of barley) laid end to end. The "barleycorn" is still used as a unit of length in shoe sizes, which are numbered by thirds of an inch, or "barleycorns," in a system of 13's.

In 18th century Europe, a foot was the length of the reigning king's footso there were 280 different sizes in use!

Today's measuring devices are un believably precise. Using the wavelength of light as a yardstick and interferometric techniques it is possible to make measurements to 1/200th of a wavelength or .0000001 (one ten millionth) of an inch. The smallest measure used by scientists is the Augstrom unit: 1/254,900,0GOth of an inch. But the biggest,the Parsec, measures 19,160,000,000,000 miles!

Advances in the field of optical measurements have had farreaching effects in our defense system — but they've put spiders out of jobs! While Keuffel and Esser Co. was making reticles (a system of lines in the focus of an optical instrument's eyepiece) for submarine periscopes during World War I; and range finders during World War II, it employed young ladies whose job it was to milk spiders for their gossamer which in turn was used to make hairlines on the glass.

In the last few years, K and E has developed equipment that enables it to produce lines on glass reticles as fine as a micron — five times thinner than a spider's thread. Thus the company DOW does all its reticle work on glass, and the spiders are unemployed.

For our space program, specialists in

27 optics at K and E have designed tracking cinetheodolites precise enough to measure angles to an accuracy of one second of arc (the angle equivalent to width of a dime seen from 2 miles away). K and E electronic autocollimators are capable of sensing angular changes to .05 seconds of arc (the angle equivalent to the thickness of a needle 2 miles away). Complex guidance systems for our Polaris missiles depend upon K and E's optical coin.ponents which enable the missile to be fired "true" from a submarine 50 feet below the surface of the water while a severe storm is causing 'the ship to pitch, yaw and roll in unpredictable ways.

But while these may seem like giant steps in the field of accurate measurement, the real challenge lies ahead.

Most of us know what a slight deviation means to a rocket heading for the moon. The fantastic requirement for accuracy and precision hit home un'der such conditions. The challenge has to do with measuring angles and distances in space, and in relation to the axes of moving bodies and vehicles in the universe.

Somewhere between the production line and perhaps a distant thought in the mind of an engineer, lies the answer.

NEW SCOTT AND WHITE HOSPITAL IN TEMPLE Three of the top men in American medicine stood on a windswept hill in Temple two years ago and thrust spades into the rocky ground. They will return to the same hilltop Dec. 6 to dedicate a revolutionary new medical center started by their symbolic spadework.

Formally opening the new $9.2 million home of Scott and White Memorial will be: Dr. Luther L. Terry, United States Surgeon General, Dr. Leonard W. Larson, immediate past-president of the merican Medical Association, and Dr. Charles W. Mayo, professor of surgery and head of Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Non-profit Scott and White is largely self-supporting but relies also on taxdeductible contributions from the public. Governed by an unpaid board of trustees, the hospital and its integral diagnostic center, research laboratories, educational facilities, etc., are staffed by a team of 56 medical specialists who receive fixed salaries from

28 the hospital rather than fees from the patients.

The new building is revolutionary in that the nursing floors are in a cloverleaf pattern, rising in three 7-story towers. In each "leaf" the nurses' station is in the center, surrounded by patient rooms — each only a halfdozen steps away and all 315 beds visible.

Memorial contributions have made many exceptional features of the hospital possible. The Olin Culberson Medical Research Center, for instance, is a major memorial. The Alexander Nurses Home, a $485,000 dormitory near the hospital, is a gift of Clyde H. Alexander and family of Dallas.

Other major contributors include the M. Tilford Jones estate of Houston and the J. E. Mabee Foundation of Tulsa, $500,000 each. Many of the hospital rooms, offices, laboratories, etc., will be listed as memorials pursuant to wishes of the various contributors.

Scott and White is the site of the University of Texas Post-Graduate School of Medicine, Temple Division, and has trained 570 doctors. The Scott and White School of Professional Nursing has graduated 1,096 nurses.

These alumni are now at work in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and in 10 other countries.

All functions of the hospital will be moved from the present site near ,downtown Temple in a complex transfer operation beginnig shortly after the Dec. 6 public inspection program.

Patients will make the mile-long journey in a caravan of ambulances on December 15, and new patients will be received there beginning the next day.

Beginnings of the hospital and its Scott, Sherewood and Brindley Foundation are traced to 1892 when Dr. A. C. Scott came to Temple as Chief Surgeon of the Santa Fe Railway Hospital. Dr. R. R. White came to assist Dr. Scott at the hospital and in his private practice in 1894. They formed a partnership in 1897.

Scott and White remained a private institution with a team of physicians in private group practice until 1949, at which time it was reorganized as a non-profit foundation with no proprietary interest involved.

In the same building visitors will be shown the Olin Culberson Research Center, educational facilities of the School of Nursing, and the University of Texas Post-Graduate School of Medicine, Temple Division, as well as laboratories, meditation room, laundry, equipment rooms, library, etc. The non-profit institution, 'now in its 67th year, will have its own version of "Operation Big Lift" on Dec. 15 when patients are moved from present quarters into the new building in a careful armada of ambulances.

Wednesday, November 27, 1963 Men who today scoff about milady's ultra-high heels were hobbling about in very similar heels in the days of Louis XIV. They soon gave up the ghost but the Louis XIV heel still is popular with women.

At the tulip of the century, shoes took on a semblance of ease,But it wasn't until about 1920 that fitting techniques were refined enough for shoes to be comfortable. Then the flapper wanted jewel-bedecked contraptions. And we were off again.

Of course, all this doesn't mean comfortable shoes are extinct. The Goodyear women's group, whose parent company makes Neolite shoe products, said most men's shoes are practical and some women's shoes — casual flats and low-heeled pumps — meet the required specifications.

But, pointing to the current creations that raise the heaviest part of the foot about four or five inches off the ground and support it with a spike less than a half-inch, in diameter, the Bureau predicted it will be many, many moons, if ever, before fashion's grip is relaxed and women are able to go out on the town in footy comfort.

---) 0 ( THE U. S. SUPREME COURT "rll take this case all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court," you say.

Chances are, you'll never make it. That court can only hear a few cases, involving those mostly dealing with federal or constitutional questions.

Now and then the Supreme Court hears a case from the start instead of waiting until the case goes through the lower courts. It can hear such cases (1) involving ambassadors and consuls, and (2) those where a State sues another -or the federal government.

But only about 123 such (original) cases have come before 'the Supreme Court in history.

Why the Supreme Court's original jurisdiction? Only three cases involving diplomats have ever come before the Court. As a rule, the State Department prefers to give the diplomat his walking papers, if his conduct might otherwise have to go to court. But only to ,high court may 'hear such cases affecting our relations with other nations, or in fact, our federal and state structure. Yet Congress allows lower courts power to hear cases involving the 50 states. In the past the Supreme Court has helped to promote harmony by offering a forum to adjust differ-• ences among our states.

V itSTNIK What are some of the cases?

California had a dispute with Arizona over Colorado River water rights.

Texas and other states_ claimed tideland oil rights against the federal government. As guardians of the interests of its people, states have sued other states, for example, when the other state lets its citizens discharge sewage to the harm of another state, or allows local businessmen preferential treatment injuring citizens of another state But the court will not give legal relief unless injury is real.

No one has yet solved the problem of how the Court enforces its decisions against a state. Thus in 1793 lawmakers declared Georgia would hang anyone who complied with a certain unfavorable decision. In 1860 Kentucky wanted to force Ohio to give up- a fugitive. The Court would not comply because the Court said it couldn't force Ohio to act.

In 1915, Virginia got a judgment against West Virginia for $15,000,000.

But West Virginia didn't pay. When the Court threatened to enforce the judgment by "appropriate remedies," West Virginia paid. Nobody knows what the Court could cave done, had West Virginia failed to comply.

Sometimes the Court relies on the President or the U. S. Marshals as officers of the Court, as in Little Rock's school case.

Yet, other presidents have not coop.erated so well. One said, "John Marshall (the Chief Justice) has pronounced his judgment. Let him enforce it if he can."

In the past,- however, the Court has prevailed because the people have usually supported it even in its unpopular decisions. For only hard cases ever reach that Court, and people usually prefer the rule of law rather than the violence that would come if the Court was not supported.
