Pilvodni sin byla posledne prestavena v r. 1949, a za kratkiich etyrech let -- v noel 28. brezna 1963 -- sin utrpela polarem. Byla apine znieena, a predpokladala se, Ze tomu byly vini vandalove, kdyZ bylo pozdeji videt na,sleciky kradeZe. Ihned ale elenove se rozhodli znovu stavet a s novostavbu se pocalo nekdy v cervnu. Dries na miste, kde bylo videt pozastatky eerneho poZaru, stoji krasna, modern' radova budova jako pomnik bratrskYm snaham souladne spolupraci.

Stony jsou z dutch cihel (heydite) a rozmer budovy je 120x160 strevic, mlma umyvaren, ktere meri 10x38 strevic.

Just as the early day settlers and pioneers of this country set out to charter for themselves a way of life after 'numerable trials, tribulations, , obstacles and reverses, so are the good people of Lodge Tyrs No. 80, Holland, undaunted in spirit, pushing forward in establishing, for themselves a permanent home for their fraternal SPJST activities.

The road has been strewn with many obstacles, none of course, insurmountable. The way has appeared dark and uncertain at times. Misfortune after misfortune plagued the brave members o f Lodge Tyrs, but possessed of the great American spirit of progress and steadfastness, they have, once again, proven that man joined together, can triumph over just about anything.

Brother Josef Belicek writes of the early beginnings of the lodge, in Czech, elsewhere in this issue, and an English translation also appears.

However, the present membership deserves much of the praise, because without their pioneer spirit and hard work, the present accomplishments would not be possible.

When I visited the building site in July with President Marek and Secretary Urbanovsky, we observed firsthand the spirit that moves men to physical toil --- the sweat, the dirt and 'grinie -- hard work in the broiling Texas July Sun. One has to admire people like that — when they are at their best.

The first hall was completed in 1949, ail. four short years later — on the night of March 28, 1963, it was destroyed by fire, believed started by vandals.

Undaunted, the members decided to start to build anew, and now after five months of laard work and many personal sacrifices, a beautiful building stands as a monument to their fraternal efforts.

Walls are of Heydite construction, and the dimensiona of the building are 126x60 ft., excluding rest room areas, which measure 10x38 ft. The floor is concrete, with an oakwood parquet dancing area.

Lodge 80, Holland, our hats are off to you in pride and 'humility. May the years ahead bring you and your fraternal community much pleasure, success, progress, and may you reap the benefits of great fraternal kinship. We salute you

Pokud znamo Josef Felcman byl prvnim neetnikem, dalei jmena, firednikt jsou jen dohady. J. R. Wojtek predseda Martin Martinets mistopindseda, a Mrs. Wojtek pokladnice.

Skromne to byly zaeatky radu, ale presto hned postrehli nutnost pastarati se o misto odpoeinku pro sve drab& Dle skromneho poetu elenstva i finaneni pomery byly die toho. Av'Sak rad se bral hlernyhilm krokem ku predu a preekal do dneSni doby vSecky tak mane: ups and downs.

Lodge No. 80 was organized on bhe 28th of February, 1909. Almost no notes or records exist from these early days, except for scant records here and there. The memories of some of our older members are very hazy after 54 years.

Some of the charter families were: the Felcman family, John Poncik and his wife Veronika, John Mikus and ibis wife Johanna, probably J. R. Wojtek and wife, who transferred from Granger, Martin Martinets, also from Granger, and Louis Stacha form Holland.

These last-named individuals' names appear on the lodge deed, after the new lodge, one year later, purchased property for a cemetery. All of these charter members have long since passed on, except for Bro Josef Felemann, who is living near Sealy in Austin County. Louis Stacha moved away and no one seems to know of his whereaborts,'or if he is still living.

It is not clear who the first lodge officers were, but as best as can be determined, Josef Felemann was the first financial secretary; J. R. Wojtek, president; Martin Martinets, vice president, and Mrs. Wojtek was the treasurer.

The early days of the lodge were indeed modest, but the members saw the need for a resting place for their members. There were almost no financial assets, but slowly and surely,the lodge progressed and grew, and overcame all the obstacles of those days.

Meetings were held at first in the homes of members, and as the membership grew, in the Sons of Hermann Flail in Holland. This hall later burned and meetings were again held in the members' homes. The Sons of Hermann built a new lodge ball, and

meetings were held Wire again, but due to ,dwindling numtbership and in Merest in their organization, their bait was sold and remodeled as a residence.

Meetings were held in the Holland City Hall for about two years. At that time rural school districts were being consolidated with city school districts, and our lodge had a chance to rent one of the rural school buildings, with the option to purchase. Ii; was moved to our present property location, and it twJs twi , e bellt onto. It was no manrion, bni it was our own and the members were proud of it.

The building was used for meetings of other organizations: the RVOS, Volunteer Fire Dept., for various high. school functions, etc.

On the night of March 28, 1963, it burned to the ground. Vandals wer,:, thought to be responsible. This was a terrific financial setback for the lodge, but in the next regular meeting in May, the member,: decided to start building a new hail right away, and insofar as possible, proof.

Today, the building stands e(m-iplet..ed at the same location as the previous building. The price of other sites s •rocketed. Four acres were donated to the lodge by Mr. Herbert Lindemann, who was not even a member of the 'Order (or any of his family) at th-4. time.

Will Dusek served as the sick committee, and Louis Martinets was the guard.

Bro. Felcihman adds that he is not positive about some of his information, and that his memory is failing him at the age of 80 plus. He stated he would be in Holland for the opening, if at all possible.

The American-Czech Festival Committee has worked for a number of years on preparation of the Czech Days at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. The Committee consists of representatives of all the lodges in Dallas who represent not only the Dallas lodges but all the Texas sister lodges.

During the years, a genuine feeling of brotherhood has developed among the member of the Festival Committee.

The various representatives learn to know each oner better, and as a result, the Committee has slowly grown more and more into a force unifying the various lodges and bringing them closer together.

This year, the Festival Committee, very ably led by Cyril Pokladnik, has ventured outside the preparation of the Festival itself into sponsoring Czech classes. After obtaining a promise from two ladies to serve without remuneration as teachers for a fourmonth course, inquiring into the source of good textbooks and securing places to meet, a survey of interests among the children and adults is now being conducted in Dallas. The Presidents of the various lodges have registration blanks and have all the basic information on the planned classes. Mrs. Josie Kankrlik has graciously agreed to serve as the information chairman.

If you are interested and have not heard about it from the President of your Lodge yet, please give Mrs. Kankrlik a call at DA 7-0772. The preregistration blanks have also been given to the American-Czech Festival Committee Members; please ask for them.

DALLAS AMERICAN-CZECH FESTIVAL WILL SPONSOR A CZECH PLAY

The American-Czech Festival Committee, representing all AmericanCzech people of the State of Texas, is sponsoring a Czech play entitled "Ze Starych Mlynu." The Texas Insurance Commission, after all these years, has an insurance man — not only as a member, but as chairman.

In the past, members of the coinmission — who have served with distinction — were lawyers, judges, educators, and a banker.

Governor Connally's choice for the commission was a real outstanding insurance man, William Hunter McLean of Fort Worth.

One of McLean's primary interests ric now is to 'choose a man with broad experience in the insurance field to replace Con-mi. Wm. A. Harrison who has resigned, effective Sept. 1. McLean said the Insurance Board •"will take its time " in finding a successor.

He has devoted his entire business career to insurance. Beginning his sixyear term on February 1 of this year, be b'rought, into the office vast knowledge that derives from his long experience.

A native of Fort Worth (Oct. 1, 1909), he comes from a distinguished Texas family.

His grandfather, Pickney McLean Sr. was a member o he Texas Constitutional Convention and a member of the first Railroad Conimission of Texas. He is the son ofolDr. John H. McLean, a physician and ourceon.

Hunter McLean was educated in 'Texas schools and Virginia Military Institute.

His first employment was in the agency field at Fort Worth ---- at age 18, He was deputy life insurance commissioner of Texas from 1933 to 1943, serving as senior examiner *and in other capacities.

He served in the M< riric in World War II. Thereafter, he and his father founded the American Standard Life Insurance Company, and he was its nresident. He sold his interests and retired from management in 1961.

McLean was a charter member and first president of the Texas Legal Reserve Officials Association.

He was a charter member, director, and official of the National Association of Life Companies, which awarded him: in 1960 its Distinguished Service Award or achievement in connection with work done on the Life Company Federal Tax Act of 1958.

He is a member of a number of Fort Worth clubs, and his contribution in th'e field of civic wark has been notable for the quality of his leadership.

A licensed pilot, his leisure time inrests including, in addition to flying, sailing and bridge.

And a Few Brief Notes

Insurance, one of Texas' greatest industries, has grown .along with the state has contributed to that growth by financing many of our enterprises.

• Just a few short years ago, there were scandals in the insurance business of Texas — it is to the credit of the companies of the commission, that all this has been cleared up. Nobody -questions insurance today; there are many companies of all kinds, and people rely on them for protection. The magnitude of the industry reveals the confidence people have in insurance.

The early history of Texas insurance was one of confusion and turmoil. A great many peOple were bilked by fast operators. There was bad feeling about the Robertson Law, which required foreign companies to invest part of their assets in Texas. When the law passed, many foreign companies left the state. From these troublous beginnings grew the great insurance industry of Texas today.

Dear Sisters and Brothers: A meeting of the Slavonic Mutual Fire Insurance Association will be held on Ottober 27th at 2:300 p.m. at the National Hall on Roberts Cut-off Road.

The main order of business will be the election of officers. Also, we will have as guest speaker, Bro, Jaroslav Kleprlik from San Antonio. After the meeting a light supper will be served and the ladies are asked to bring kolaches, cakes, or pastries.

In August, my husband, Carl, and I attended the SMFSA Convention, which was held in Bryan. This was our second one to attend and each one is more informative and interesting.

Since Carl is the local secretary, we have learned a lot about the insurance and the way the business is handled.

Although I was only an onlooker, I enjoyed every minute of it. It. was also good to see a lot of the delegates we had met four years ago as well as some friends whom we hadn't seen in sev-

eral years. Carl of course is proud and honored at having been elected a director for the next four years.

We want to wish one of our members, Sister Millie Bartek, a speedy recovery. About ten days ago she underwent surgery for a ruptured appendix. She is a little better at this time, but still is in serious condition.

Dear Friends: In our meeting last Sunday. we decided to have a free supper and dance for the members of our lodge. Included in this will be those friends, nonmembers, who have worked for free since our opening. To these friends, cards will be mailed to invite them. tSisters are asked to bring baked goods, pies, cakes, kolaches etc. The supper will be served at 4:30 in the afternoon.

After supper, a free dance will follow for everyone. So invite your friends to this dance.

We have also voted in favor of having our District II Achievement day in our Lodge Hall on Sunday, November 24. All boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 21 are eligible to enter this contest so get busy and show us what you have made. Lodges should encourage boys and girls to enter this contest. All exhibits must be on display by 2 p.m. so that the judges will have ample time for the judging.

Details on this will be in the next issue of the Vestnik, so watch, for them.

Remember that our next meeting will be on Sunday, Nov. 3, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Officers and delegates to the convention will be elected. Come and elect yours. To be eligible to vote, hold office, or be a delegate you must have your lodge dues paid since Sept.

We have selected Aug. 16 as our picnic date so we would appreciate it if our neighboring lodges would remember this date and not have a picnic on the same Sunday.

Dear Members and Friends, We held our regular meeting on October 13th. Due to other activities taking place on the first Sunday we held our meeting on the second Sunday.

President John Krizan called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge of Order were given by the Youth Club members who were present.

There were two new members accepted: ;Stanley Watt and Doris Ann Veselka. Hope you two enjoy being members at our lodge at Cottonwood.

The door prize was won by Herman Drews.

The Youth Club will have a Halloween Party on October 30th at 7:30 p.m. The Club will furnish meats and drinks for members only. The mothers are asked to bring the sweets and meats for themselves. Each Club member can bring a, guest if they wish, so let's all come and have a big turnout and a good time. The members of the Youth Club should wear at least a mask if they don't have a costume.

The party will be held at Cottonwood MTh The door prize was won by Dorothy Pavlicek.

We wonder why there wasn't a writeup about the district meeting in the Vestnik. There were guite a few members who asked about the procedure of the meeting.

Our next monthly meeting will be held on Sunday, November 3rd. Let's as many as can come out to this meeting since there will be a discussion about building onto the hall. We would like to have opinions from the members on what they want and think should be done. There will be a luncheon and a dance at night. This will be our quarterly barbecue, and all the ladies are asked to bring a covered dish. The meeting will start at 4:00 p.m.

Dear Vestnik Readers, Galveston was the scene of the District Five meeting on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Many of the members of our Glee Club were there and we really did enjoy ourselves. The Barbecue was fabulous

All those who attended the Youth Program' in the afternoon must know how proud we are of our singers, Sister Helen Hegwood, Brother Fred Burl, and Brother Tim Kostom, as well as Brother Jerry Pokorny, who accompanied them on the piano.

According to Brother Porkorny the songs were taken from Anton Dvorak's New World - Symphony. Helen ,,sang "With a Song in My Heart"- Then she and Fred sang a duet, "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing." Oh, it was so beau-, tiful! Their rich voices reached out to the audience. The applause was tremendous and everyone cried, "more, more!"

Fred moved forWard,to take his bow as he waited for the audience to silence for his solo number. 'Everyone in his throat" the roomThad; "his heart as Fred sang "Moon River." I wish I could explain the way I felt as I watched and listened to him. He was won derful! After the program many people Came to congratulate Helen' and Fred.

I was able to catch -a few comments here and there. "You were' great . . . you sent goose chills... . we loved It . . fabulous . . " were just a few; there were many more "Going Home," Was the closing mimher which Helen and 'Fred sang together. They were accompanied by Brother Tim Kostom.

Sister Maxine Sefcik, a member of our Glee Club, was Mistress of Ceremony. She told the audience in her introduction of Fred that be had a part in the play "South Pacific" at the Cork Club here in Houston. I saw that play and I believe we have a very, very talented nerson with us.

You can understand why we are so proud of Fred. After you hear him sing, if you haven't already, maybe someday you too will be saying, "I knew him when . . " Let us all hope that Fred takes the right way to accomplish what he wants so badly. And that is with faith in God's leading band and hard work.

In behalf of my fellow members I wish to thank all of the members of the Galveston SPJST lodge for showing all of us a wonderful time that Sunday.

LODGE SLOVAN NO. 9, SNOOK. Dear Sisters and Brothers: Our regular meeting will be held as usual, the first Sunday- in November, which will be November 3, 1963, and It will start at 1:00 p.m. instead of 2:00 p.m. The reason for this is that this will be our annual meeting and we are 'going to elect officers for 1964, and also delegates to the convention.

After the meeting we are going to have, a little lunch. The lodge will buy the wieners and bread and the ladies are asked to bring cakes, kolaches and salads.

There was also a discussion in the meeting about the front stage and that if lowered the stage even with the dance floor there would be more room for tables, but it was postponed until this meeting. so it is up to the members to think it over and decide what you want to do with it. Without the presence of the members we won't be able to decide on anything. Let us all try to see that this meeting is well attended.

We, the officers, are hoping that there will be just as many as possible at this meeting.

FALL DISTRICT 6 MEETING Dear Sisters and Brothers: Greetings to all: Our Fall District meeting will be held on Sunday, November 3. Lodge Cechoslovan No. 40 is the host for this meeting. The , meeting will be held in `Hillje, in the SPJST Hall; starting time is 1:00 p.m. Hillje is on Highway 59.

It is our wish in District Six that this will be a successful meeting; therefore, we are inviting each and everyone to come and visit with us. It will make us very bappy to have visitors from other Districts, because visitors are always welcome. We will also be happy to have visitors that do not belong to the SPJST. Come over, we will be very glad to have you.

We will have a Youth Program, which I know you will enjoy. Some of our Youth who performed in the State Talent Contest were winners, and first place winners at that! Fraternally yours, Leo Krause, Jr. District 6 President SOKOL HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: On Sunday, October 27th the annual "Sokol Circus" will be presented to the public. A delicious barbecue lunch will be served starting at noon and will include pork, beef and chicken barbecue. The price is still $1 per plate for adults. In the afternoon a free gymnastic program will be presented, which will include a colorful and gay atmosphere of the circus. Following the march of the clowns, drills will be performed on the parallel and horizontal bar, the rings, balancing beam and the side horse. The program will include both men and women and will feature clown acts, mixed acts, and startling gymnastic drills. The affair will be presented inside and a box seat is available for most attendants.

Following the circus will be a free dance with music furnished by the popular Karel Matejka Polka Band.

This is the final program of the season and is well attended. So, come early and enjoy the entire day with us.

Remember, the kitchen will be closed during the circus so as to enable all to see our spectacular program. The circus will start at approximately 3:00 o'clock At present a big push is being made to acquire new members in fulfillment of the Sokol Centennial in 1965. Just last month We at Houston acquired three new members. One of the members has joined as an active gymnast, of which we are always in need.

Our program for October is also dedicated to Child Health Day, 1963 proClaimed by the President of the United States as Monday, October 7, 1963. The President has invited "all persons and all agencies and organizations interested in the welfare of children to unite on that day in observances that bolster our efforts to foster the health of our children." The Sokol Organization is such an activity dedicated to the

Visitors recognized were Dorothy and Joe Nesloni, Ernest Banik, and Lee Gaskamp.

New members received were Glenn Kirkland, Rita Kirkland, David Kirkland, and. Russell Kirkland.

A motion was made and seconded that we accept them as members of our Fraternal Order and Lodge No. 35 of Elk. Other visitors recognized were Frank Lostak, Rosie Woods, and Bill Hand.

Minutes of' She previous meeting were read by Brother Secretary Eugene Pavelka. They were approved as read.

Committeemen made their reports and were successful as usual.

President of Trustees, Vernon Woods, made a report on the water system in the planning of the Elk-Oak Lake Communities.

There were no sick members for the month.

Brother Zalman made a report on the Czech Festival Day at the Dallas Fair that he attended.

Under old business a discussion was held concerning the color of the tables since they need to be painted. One table was painted as an example and a motion was made and seconded that we paint them "that" yellow. Brother Mach also stated that the dance floor be repaired on the east side. A motion was made and seconded that we do so and to let it be handled by the Trustees.

A discussion next on the agenda concerned the voting procedure on election of officers for 1964. A motion was made and seconded that we do not select nominees for officers in the November meeting and that we use the secret ballot procedure in electing officers in the December meeting.

Brother Antone Pavelka made a report concerning the District III Meeting that was held at Cottonwood Lodge recently. He explained the contest on

VESTNIK insurance sales between District III and V, and urged all our members to cooperate as rapidly and diligently as they can with our home organizers.

Youth. Leader, Norma Pavelka, stated that we need to have something for our Youth Club in order to keep up interest among the children and she suggested we have a game night after our next lodge meeting. All members and parents are urged to participate and food will be cerved in the usual manner. A motion was made and seconded to this effect.

Brother Woods stated that we will have pictures taken of all committeemen and a picture of all members and friends present at this meeting. These pictures will be enlarged and hung on the rear wall of our hall, along with the other pictures already there.

A - motion was made and seconded that we bar any sale of tickets unless given permission by management.

Mr. and Mrs. Albin Matus and family arrived to provide music for our entertainment after the meeting.

A three-day conference of the Beethoven Society ended in Piestany, Slovakia, on July 14th. It clarified some questions of Beethoven's stay in Slovakia and its reflection in Czech and Slovak literature. An exhibition was opened in the villa in which Beethoven lived during his stay in the spa town, and two concerts were devoted to his works.

The Gino Neri Orchestra, consisting of 60 mandolin-players from Ferrara, toured Czechoslovakia in July.

Church of Caldwell, with a large host of friends and relatives attending. Rev. Milton Burchwale, assisted by Rev. John John J. Bravenec, a nephew, and Rev. Edwin Schaefer, brother-in-law, officiated. Interment was in the Mound Prairie Cemetery.

Brother Bravenec was graduated from Texas A.and M. College. He served as county judge of Burleson County from 1046 until 1950 and again from January, 1959 until his death.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of which he served on the board of elders, and was a member of the SPJST. He is survived by his wife, Mrs, Katherine Bravenec ; son Stevie, and two daughters, Shirley and Martha of Caldwell; two sisters, Mrs. Tracy Visoski of Bryan, and Mrs. Frances Badgett of College Station; five brothers, Joe John, Tom, Henry, and Frank Bravenec, all of Houston; two halfbrothers, Will Rubach of Snook, and Vince Rubach of Houston, and a host of other relatives and friends.

May our departed brother rest in peace.

Brother Reznicek was born in Moravia, Czeehoslovakia. He became a member, of the SPJST on December 11, 1918. Many years ago, he moved from Texas to Chicago where he was a grocer. May our deceased brother rest in eternal peace.

vEsTNix Cultural Notes WERICH, TRNKA NATIONAL ARTISTS Actor and Puppeteer Honored Two important Czech artists, actor Jan Werich and artist Jiri Trnka, both known abroad as well as at home, have received the highest form of official recognition Czechoslovakia gives its cultural workers: they were named National Artists by the President of the Republic on July 30th.

From the very beginning of Werich's lartistic career, in the early 1930s. he, Jiri Voskovec and composer Jaroslav Jezek through their newly-founded Liberated Theater declared war on philistinism and pseudo-patriotism.

From that point on it was clear what Werich was striving for with his art: He spared no effort to push forward, with other progressive intellectuals and artists, against dictators and reactionaries, against bureaucracy, blockheads, egoists and cowards.

Werich has never been afraid to speak out, for he has a feeling of coresponsibility for the fate of his country to which he is devoted and which helped him develop his remarkable artistic talent. His is a feeling of responsibility for the nature of people's lives; defense of reason; human passions and human rights against those forces which would prepare a new world catastrophe. It is for this humanistic quality of his art that Werich was awarded the coveted title.

Jiri Trnka is a modern, subtle lyrical artist, illustrator and creator of cartoon and puppet films, the most recent of which 'have made his name famous in almost all parts of the world. There are few countries where young and adult cinema-goers have not seen his "Prince Bayaya" or "Midsummer Night's Dream" and there are undoubtedly very few countries in which his latest film, "Cybernetic Grandma," will not be shown. Last month this film won the Golden Seal at the Science Fiction Film Festival in Trieste.

• New Farms Films provide a link between the art of the two men. The production "One Day a Cat," in which Jan Werich plays one of the main roles, took second place at Cannes. Trnka is an outstanding illustrator of children's books — many of which are known to foreign children as well — and a captivating artist whose name, especially in recent years,

19 has become known in connection with Czechoslovak cartoon and puppet films of which he is one of the originators.

He aroused attention in the film world as the first rebel against ADisney's sovereignty in the field. In his cartoon films he literally exploded all the artistic forms which had been generally recognized in this field. Some of the Trnka films have set a new pattern, not only for film workers in Czechoslovakia.

Jan Werich and Jiri Trnka are two quite different personalities in the world of art; and it is a mere coincidence that they both were awarded the title of National Artist on the same day and during the same ceremony.

But they have one thing in, common: The art of both helps to make the world in which we live a really human world.

—SPJSTPETER PARLEft OPENS THE GATEWAY TO GOTHIC The way from Prague's Old Town quarter to the banks of the Vltava leads through narrow winding streets which, still retain the charm of past centuries. At the banks of the river, standing like a silent sentry before ancient, stone-built Charles Bridge is a massive bridge tower, richly decorated with Gothic sculpture. The small square in front of the tower is lined with Baroque facades. On one side there is the statue of Emperor Charles IV, King of Bohemia (1316-1378), known as "The Father. of Bohemia" and the builder of Gothic Prague.

Across the river one can see the romantic panorama of the Little Quarter and Hradc any, the Castle quarter, with their tangle of roofs, towers, spires and green Baroque cupolas. Dominating the horizon there rises the proud silhouette of St. Vitus Cathedral with its mighty Gothic tower facing, unprecedentedly for those days, south — toward the city.

Although the man who conceived of these remarkable architectural works was Charles IV, the architect whose genius gave toncert form to his Master's grandiose visions was a simple stone-mason, Petr Parler (1330-1399).

With the return of young King Charles to Prague in 1334, the Bohemian capital became the scene of lively activity.

After eleven years abroad, in Italy and at the court of his uncle, the French King Charles IV, the 18-year-old prince found the Bohemian kingdom inherited by his mother, Eliska Premyslovna, in a state of neglect. Prague

Castle Was fast deteriorating and the royal estates were being occupied by nobles. A mystic, yet an able shrewd politician Emperor Charles was convinced by his dreams that Prague was predestined, under his dynasty, to become the center of a great empire whose heart was to be the Kingdom; of Bohemia. And so he .devoted himself unsparingly to restoring and beautifying Bohemia and its capital. He poured fortunes into renovating the castle along the lines of he French royal residence. Simultaneously, he founded the New Town district of Prague and had many fine houses and churches built. In 1348 he established the Prague University which still hears his name, the first university in Central Europe. The ruler lavished special attention on the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral next to the ancient rotunda where the kings of Bohemia had been crowned and where a forerunner of his, St. Wenceslas, had his final resting; place.

In 1344, the building of this magnificent Gothic cathedral was begun in the inner courtyard of Prague Castle. The blueprints were those of Matthew of Arras, an experienced, elderly architect who had planned many cathedrals in in the south of France. He based the choir_ of the Prague cathedral on that of the chtirch of St. Just at Narbonne. The expressive compact charter of the chapel galery and a severe post-classical linear. style are

the chief characteristics of this master's work. In 1352, Matthew of Arras died, after eight years in Prague; eight of his gallery chapels had been built.

Emperor CharleS now had to find another master to take over the supervision of the work on theunfinished cathedral. It is possible that he was already considering a change in the academic design of the cathedral; perhaps this is why he picked as Matthew's successor the young stonemason Petr Parler.

Parler came from a large family of masons and was a leading member of the workshop building the choir in the church of the Holy Cross at Schwabiseh Gmund. The young Petr arrived in Prague with his wife and family toward the end of 1353. He was then 23, but in spite of his youth he was al.Teadv recognized as a skilled craftsman with a useful knowledge of the architecture of the cathedral in Cologne and of Gothic churches in northern France. He may also have been acquainted with English Gothic. It was the architecture of Normandy, however, which inspired Parler to combine the light pierced window section of the new cathedral with the heavy massive chapel gallery designed by Matthew. The richly decorative system of supports which he ' used is reminiscent of the Cologne cathedral.

Parler quickly made himself at home in Prague; he settled at Hradcany where, in 1359, he bought a house in what is today Loretto Street and later considerably increased his property. A respected burgher, he was town councillor of Hradcany district in 1360. For many years he directed the St. Vitus stone-masons' workshop in Prague, which employed other members of his family â&#x20AC;&#x201D; among them his brother, Michael, nephew Jindrich and his sons, Jan and Vaclay.

The young architect made daring additions to his predecessor's work on St. Vitus Cathedral. Upon Matthew's comparatively massive structure he placed the light, pierced upper part of the presbytery based on patterns from northern France. He filled the cathedral's large windows with picturesque circular ornamentation using, for the first time, flamboyant motifs. The inner section of the cathedral he roofed with a lofty vault ingeniously constructed from Matthew's old oblong travees which he reworked into quadrangles.

The young craftsman was faced with a particularly difficult task when con-

' Wednesday, October 23, 1963 struction workers approached the tomb of Bohemia's patron Saint, Wenceslas.

King Charles had very specific requirements where this was concerned. He decided to donate the new royal crown, made in 1345, to tire Saint who was to guard it. The crown chamber, sealed by seven locks, was to be accessible only by way of the Saint's chapel. This chapel, therefore, was given a highly important state and church function.

Parler discharged his task to perfection. He daringly inserted the new St. Wenceslas Chapel into the original ground plan of the cathedral as an independent cubicle, disregarding the fact that one-third of it jutted out into the southern section of the nave. Inside the chapel he used net vaulting, hitherto unknown in Bohemia, in a quadrangular design and ornamented the walls richly with jewels and gold in the manner of a vision of celestial Jerusalem. The chapel was consecrated in 1366. in 1392 the aging master craftsman started building the massive south tower, according to his own designs. Before his death seven years later, he managed to enclose the large choir with a provisional wall. His sons, Master Vaclav and Master Jan, continued this work until 1406. Construction of the cathedral was halted shortly afterwards because of the Hussite wars.

According to the inscription beneath the bust of Parler in the cathedral triforium, his work includes the stone Charles bridge linking the Little Quarter with the Old Town of Prague. The construction of this bridge was begun in 1357, according to his design and probably according to his model, and continued until the outbreak of the Hussite revolution. In this task. Parler showed himself to be a highly experienced technician; his perfect architectural work with sixteen segment arches rests on wen-proportioned pillars. The Old Town Tower at the end of the bridge is also the work of Parler. In spite of damage incurred ,during the Thirty-Years War and after repairs made at the end of the last century, it remains one of the most beautiful Gothic towers in Europe, both in terms of architecture and sculptured ornamentation. It was constructed by members of the St. Vitus workshop following the coronation of Wenceslas IV, son of Emperor Charles IV, as King of Bohemia in 1376.

His ,nephew Jindrich had been invited to Italy in 1391 as an expert on stonemasonry geometry. Parlor's son, Vaela y, followed him in 1403. The other stone-masons of the Prague workshop spread Parlor's style all over Central Europe — to southern Germany, Cra cow and Hungary. A century later, people were still speaking of the followers of Petr Parler as the "celebrated Prague master of the old art."

SP THE CZECHOSLOVAK INDUSTRY

Czechoslovakia ranks among the pioneers of cinematographic art. Not only because the first film shot on Czech territory was produced as early as 1&16, when Lumiere's cameramen were shooting Passion plays at Horice in the Sumava, bet also because enthusiasts were found in Czechoslovakia who began to produce films themselves two years after the French experi ments. That was the start of the first documentaries as well as feature films.

Apart from Czechoslovakia, only big countries — the USA, France, Britain, Germany — were able to boast of such achievements.

Czechoslovak cinematography, therefore, has a long tradition. Each decade made a new contribution of its own. Mostly, however, the films produced remained only on the fringe of the art. But at the same time, amid the flood of commercial productions, some outstanding works appeared which have earned themselves a place of honor in the history of cinematography, such as the film "Ecstasy" by producer Mach When a rerospective show of Czech films was organized in Venice on the occasion of the International Film Festival two years ago, this film as well as others aroused ,great surprise and an enthusiastic response.

A turbulent development was recorded by the Czech and Slovak eine, matographic art after 1945, when the film industry was nationalized. This put an end to commercialization of the film a r t. Of course, this process was not simple, and it has still not been fully accomplished. The road to true art is devious. It leads through errors and primarily through the will to search and discover. That is why experimentation was emphasized, and also why we appreciate films which have a clean-cut aim.

An enumeration of international prizes and awards would be very lengthy. We have bad successes in most diverse icategories, and we are well to the fore with our animated puppet films. Jiri Trnka and Karel Zeman --- these two names are known all over the world.

But Czechoslovakia has successfully introduced herself to the world also by children's feature films. Perhaps most of the prizes won in this field were awarded last year. From Cannes to Venice, everywhere the juries emphasized the artistic strength of the Czechoslovak films for children and juveniles: "The Cinema," "The Boy and the Roe," "Distress."

Tim prothation of short films occupies an important place, too. Czechs produce about 500 of them annually.

And in the studios at •arrandov in Prague, in Bratislava and in Gottwaldov 30 - 40 feature filMs were shot as well as full-length documentaries every year.

New productions Which rank among the foremost films in the world are created by Czech production groups every year. On the occasion cf last year's "Czechoslovak Film Week" held in Vienna, the Austrian press referred to the selection from Czech productions as ranking among the world's best. Naturally, all Czch films cannot be praised, because the Czechoslovak films of inferior or mediocre quality. films of inmerior or mediocre quality.

In Czechoslovakia, too, there are film producers who ewe be regarded as no better than merely good craftsmen, beside really outstanding directors, such as Jasny, Brynych, Kachyna, Weiss, Vlacil and others.

This year the Czechs have already been able to see several new films of a high artistic standard. Brynych's and Lustig's "'Transport from Paradise" vividly depicts 24 hours in the Nazi ghetto in Terezin. A theme taken from the time of the last war is also 'featured in the ;film produced by Kadar and Kies, "Death Calls Itself EngelaLhen,' whose main underlying idea is nevertheless a very contemporary one. And, to mention a third example, there is a film by a Slovak

producer entitled "`The Boxer and Death," which also deals with life in a Nazi concentration camp. A topical subject has been chosen by the Slovak producer Tiber for his Mai The Sun in a Net." It is a poetical story about young people, a documentary-type study of their mentality and feelings.

'The life of young people in n :own near the frontier is also the subject of young producer Mlikovsky's first film, "The Cucumber Hero." Bat even the historical film produced by 0. Danek, "The Hussite Cavalry," whose action takes place at the time of the Reformation wars, has its distinct contemporary orientation.

A unioue, position is occupied among recent productions by two films directed by a woman, Vera Chytilova. "The Ceiling" was her diploma work at the film faculty, and the "Bag of Fleas" her first professional film. Both are conceived in a very original and fresh way, reminiscent of the most vigorous trends in world cinematography. The heroine of the former is a mannequin, while the latter takes the audience into a teenagers' residential school. The apprentices of a textile factory are the actual actresses. They speak and behave so naturally that one feels they are not in front of a camera, The idea, the form of narration, as well as the camera a pproach all indicate talent and purposefulness.

Most eagerly awaited is producer Jasny's film "When the Cat Comes."

Jasny is a very profound director. His productions, whether poetic. satirical or comedy films, always contain an underlying philosophical idea. In his latest film, moreover, he uses color as an instrument to reveal human characters. Am interesting (though different) experiment with color has also been made by Hare! Zci p an in his ('lot "Baron Munchausen," which was awarded the "Gold Sail" at last year's International Film Festival in Locarno.

Czechoslovak cinematography has an illustrious tradition, and yet it means to remain forever young — young in ideas, expression, artistic approach. It fights with its best productions against mediocrity, which is the greatest obstacle not only in the sphere of cinema, but in the arts in general.

Recent Films Partisan warfare against the occupation troops has inspired the creators of the film "Death Calls Itself Engefchen" 2. The inhuman atmosphere of the

Brother Hugo Shefcak of Dallas recently sent us a copy of a rather lengthy speech inserted in the 'Congressional Record by US Senator Roman Hruska, from the State of Nebraska. The speech contained Senator Hruska's remarks in favor of the test ban ratification. Senator Hruska is one Of our most outstanding Czech-Americans, and has represented his state well In the Congress. We are sorry that the speech is too long to reprint here, and to take excerpts from it, I believe, would not do justice to Senator Hruska or to his remarks. To Brother Shefcak, our sincere thanks.

John Neumann was the first US male !citizen to be declared as blessed by the Catholic Church. Bishop Neumann, fourth bishop of Philadelphia (1852-1860), was born in Prachtice, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

Second prize at the third international film festival in Moscow went to the Czechoslovak film "Death Is Called Engelchen," directed by Jan Kadar and Elmer Klos; a story of the Slovak Uprising against the Nazis in 1944.

Youth Section LODGE '6, COT LONWOD Dear Club Members, Parents and Friends: Here are a few lines to say a few good words about everything that Las happened in our club lately. To me it seems we are progressing just won.derfully so far this year.

We have accomplished a lot in the year 1963 — more than in previous years and I am very proud of that. I hope we will continue to progress in years to come. I know we can and will as long as I get the cooperation from the parents and youngsters as I have in the past. All I can say and express are my sincere thanks to all.

Our regular monthly meeting was held Sunday, October 13, right after the adults' meeting. We had good attendance, despite the lazy autumn Sunday and other functions taking place elsewhere.

A final discussion was held about our 'next party. The majority voted to have a Haloween party at the Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 30, beginning at. 7:30 p.m. and until your parents take you thome. So, you all be sure and remember this date and come, because this is for ALL of you. You must wear a mask, dress as funny as you can or you won't 'be admitted to the party. This goes for all the parents, too. Let's be spookie and funny so we can laugh at each other.

I am again calling on the parents to help me in the line of food, some sweets for the kiddos and yourselves, or the group you bring., The club will furnish the meats, bread and drinks. You can bring friends, we will be glad to have them.

Now, about our District Meeting that was held at our Lodge Hall, Sept. 29th: I am still wondering why there was 'no writeup about the district meeting proceedings in this paper. Was the lodge too small to write about? We had over 250 people present, and, maybe more, later. Everyone 'seemed to have enjoyed it, including the program that was presented.

I think the youth program in the afternoon was carried out beautifully and the !club members wearing their 'newly-made uniforms highlighted their appearance. I would like to say thanks 'to Sister Wilma Nesuda, our District Youth Director, for taking over and announcing the program for me.

This was the concluding number by the Cottonwood youth club members.

Special guests were our District III Queen and King, Frances Miller and Alan Hensel. They were also State Winners, from Lodge 66, Waco. Other guests were Kathy Vrla of Lodge 130, Dallas; Jimmy Strunc, Lodge 82, Ennis; and the Czech Choir of Lodge 66, under the direction of Bro. Nrck Morris.

After the program the meeting proceeded and was adjourned later in the afternoon, followed by a snack, refreshments, and social. We hope everyone arrived home safely.

Our next Lodge Meeting will be on November 3rd, one hour later, because it is our quarterly affair followed by a dance at night for everyone. More on this later from our lodge reporter.

I still would like to say thanks to all those sisters who helped finish the stage and bar curtains, and who helped me decorate the hall. My special thanks go to the mothers who worked so hard making the club uniforms so that they would be ready for the District III Meeting. There were over 35 youngsters wearing the uniforms, and they all looked very nice. I . hope those who did not get to make theirs yet will -lo so soon and wear them to our next

Fall is here; the nights are cool and the days are still fairly hot. We all need a good rain, and I'm sure everyone would be happy, especially the farmers; they need a rain real bad.

It is too dry to plant the winter legumes, and too dry to plow the ground.

With all the homework it is hard to find time to write. I also take accordion lessons every week, so that keeps me very busy.

I was unable to make our last meeting because my grandfather, John Hanzlicek, passed away. Let's all pray for the faithful departed and may their souls rest in peace.

My father, Edmund Marek, was in the hospital and is now doing much better.

I went to the State Fair of Texas on Hill County Day. I had a wonderful time. I went with the Penelope School children.

The Fair is real educational for school children and I think everyone should go every year.

I'm busy with homework most of the time. I study hard to be an A student in school.

I would like to thank everyone who helped and visited my father while he was in the hospital. He is home now and is cluing much better.

My grandfather, John Hanzlicek, passed away September 26th, and I would like to thank everyone, some of the members of the Mother Lodge,and the Youth Club of Lodge 54 who attended the funeral and sent food, or who helped in any way to make the sorrow and pain easier.

We are going to have a Halloween party for our Youth Club this month,

BEEF BY THE SIDE OR THE CUT? Despite today's trend toward smaller packages of food and more convenient foods, the sale of quarters and sides of beef is on the increase, says Ed Uvacek, livestock marketing specialist, with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

In some cases, says the specialist, buying beef in this form can save the consumer money, but he advises them to look carefully at the economics of such purchases. Unfortunately, all the carcass is not steak and roast. A large portion is cutting loss, fat, bone and low price cuts. In making the decision Whether to buy a side of beef, first determine the price of each of the major retail cats at the local food store. These cuts are rib roast, a per cent of the carcass; chuck roast, 19 per cent; ground beef, 18 per cent; T-bone and porterhouse steak, 6 per cent; round steak, 10 per cent; rump roast, 5 per cent; sirloin, 8 per cent, and stewbeef, 6 per cent.

To compute the total cost of retail beef, multiply the percentage of each of the cuts by the price of that cut in the retail market. Then add these individual costs and divide the total by 80 per cent, the carcass minus bone, fat and cutting loss. This gives the average retail cost per pound if the beef were purchased over the retail counter.

To compare this price with the one quoted for beef by the side, first divide the price per pound of side by 80 and ad'd the price for storage of the meat, about 5 cents per pound. To decide if buying beef by the side is really a bargain, compare this figure with the retail price per pound, says the specialist.

Other factors to be taken into consideration when buying a side or quarter of beef are to make sure that the same grade is priced in both cases, storage costs may vary tremendously, and remember that processing, cutting and wrapping is assumed to be included in the original quoted carcass

CONTROL PEACH TREE BORERS If you have noticed wax or gum oozing from the trunk of your peach trees they are probably infested with peach tree borers and now is the time to control these pests, says H. A, Turney, area entomologist with the Texas Agricultural Extension, service.

The insects damage the trees from about a foot above the ground to three or four inches below it, Turney says.

Treatment for peach tree borers is Paradichlorobenzene crystals applied to the infested trees between October 20 and November 15. All weeds and grasses should be removed from around the tree trunk for about a foot and the PDB crystals placed in a circular band around the tree about two inches from the trunk.

A mound of dirt six inches high should then be packed against the tree without allowing the crystals to touch the tree because they will harm it if they do, says Turney. Leave the mounds until spring, then level them back to the original ground line.

Two to three year old trees require about 3/9-ounce of PDB crystals per tree, and four to five year old trees need about 3/4 -ozs. per tree. A mature tree requires 1 ounce of crystals per

Six popular fall foods are particularly abundant, this Thanksgiving month. They make up the U. S. Department of Agriculture's official list of plentifuls because supplies actually exceed our normal needs, as determined `by USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

Turkeys and cranberries, naturally enough, are featured on the list.

Apples, grapes, potatoes and Maine sardines also will be plentiful all month. So look for lots of these typical fall foods, at modest cost. Serve them often.

The marketable supply of turkeys, many from this area, is expected to be about the same as last year's large crop. A cranberry harvest of 1,317,600 barrels, is the third-largest on 'record.

Apple production forecast at 122.2 million bushels is higher than average.

'California's Grape crop of 620 ; 000 tons compares to 578,000 tons in 1962. Fall production of potatoes, estimated at 190.3 million hundredweight, is almost equal to last year's huge harvest and well above average. And current inventories of Maine sardines, the small ones, is almost 50 per cent more than what is considered normal for this time of year.

RATS â&#x20AC;&#x201D; THE BILLION DOLLAR PEST Rats are more than filthy, distasteful pests, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These rodents annually cost Americans over a billion dollars in the food they eat and the property they destroy, not to mention the misery and death they cause each year from rat-borne diseases.

Few farm products are safe from their attack. Rats spoil grain, fish, fruit, meat,, milk products and vegetables, and kill and injure poultry and livestock. Even wildlife is not safe from them. They cause as much damage to property as to products by their gnawing and burrowing, says the Departmentt. Grain sacks, wooden containers, electrical wiring and building foundations are harmed by rats in their quest for food.

The first step in ridding the farm or home of rats and mice is destroying the places where they live by cleaning up old trash piles and rat proofing buildings.

Killing the rats by the use of poison gases or poison bait is the next step in the fight against them, says the USDA. Poisoning is the most effective method of' killing rats but care should be used to keep it away from children or animals. The anticoagulants a r e the most practical bait type poisons and calcium cyanide gas is effective in the rodent's burrows. The Department

Trapping is another method of controlling rats that may be desirable in homes where poisoned rats might cause an odor problem. However, the use of traps is only practical where there are a few rats or as a follow-up to poisoning.

The USDA adds small terriers, Airedales, cats and small bore rifles to the list of rat eradicators and recommends that neighborhood campaigns be organized to eliminate rats and the tremendous losses they incur.

On the face of each the 20tb, century has etched the lines of its troubles, achievements and failures .— lines of worry over two world wars, a massive depression and a cold war. Some faces show. lines from work on brilliant medical and scientific successes, bountiful agricultural production, and amazing technical progress. This collectively, says Reagan Brown, Extension sociologist, is the face of the Older American.

Intluded in the group which has probably been more closely studied than any other segment of our population during the past 15 years is approximately 10 per cent of the national population. And, points out Brown, included are the faces of three ex-U.S. Presidents, more than a fourth of the U.S. Senators, two of the nine U.S. Supreme Court Justices, about one and a quarter million people living on farms, about two million full-time workers, over 121/2 million receiving social security benefits, over 2.3 million war veterans, and more than 3 million people who migrated to the U.S. from Europe.

Behind their faces are the brains, strengths and weaknesses of the men and women who have had a major part in bringing America into the jet and missile age. There can be no composite picture drawn of the Older Americans; however, some facts are known about him, explains the sociologist. He may be between 65 and 70 but is probably older. He may have an adequate income butt probably not. He may be working but it is unlikely. He may have a high school education but probably doesn't.

He may be in good health but probably isn't. He may snot receive social saeurity but probably does. He would

VESTNfK like more to, do but the opportunities do' not exist. He may collect a private pension but probably doesn't. He may have , adequate health insurance but probably doesn't and may live alone but probably not. How do we know these facts? They have come from the extensive studies of the past 15 years and more is forthcoming, says Brown.

And, he adds, the findings are being used to initiate and strengthen programs dealing with their welfare.

—SPJSTTEXAS LEADS GOVERNMENT PAYMENT LIST Texas and Iowa were virtually tied for first place in the amount of government, payments made to farmers in 1962. The Texas payments totalled $148,461,000, the Iowa farmers received $148,228,000.

An Agriculture Department report showed that payments totaled $1,730,147,000 in 1962 compared with $1, 484,356,000 in 1961.

Payments to farmers for reducing acreages of feed grains under a program designed itei 'reduce surpluses made up almost half the total outlay.

They amounted to 840.9 million. Payments for idling wheat land under a similar program totaled 253 million.

Landowners who still had cropland retired under the old soil bank plan received 304.1 million. Tihey also got 224 million for carrying out approved soil and water conservation projects on their land under the Agricultural Conservation Program.

Payments totaling 53.7 million were Made to domestic sugar growers under a stabilization program and 54 million to wool growers in incentive payments.

States receiving in excess of 50 million dollars in payments last year included: Ohio 59.5 million; Indiana 73.9 million; Illinois 109.2 million; Minnesota 90.5 million; Missouri 102.8 million; North Dakota 72.9 million; South Dakota 53.3 million; Nebraska 101.3 million; Kansas 105.3 million, and Oklahoma 56.3 million.

—SPJSTHISTORY'S GREATEST ROBBERIES What was the biggest robbery of all time? In June of 1945, nearly $10 million in gold was stolen from the German National Gold. Reserves in Bavaria. A combine of U.S. military personnel and German civilians engineerer the operation. A total of 730 gold bars valued at $9,878,400 together with

six sacks of bank notes and 25 boxes of platinum bars and precious stones r disappeared in transit—but none of the responsible has been brought to trial.

Robbery is as old as mankind. According to information supplied by the Shulton Company, the types of things robbed or stolen have run the gamut from beaver hats to airplanes—inculing sterling silver plate and coins — oil from the land and' vessels of gold and even sailing vessels. Throughout history, robbers have been condemned, praised, captured, "sprung," punished and vindicated. Pontius Pilate released the "notable" robber Barabbas, instead of Jesus. According to legend, a pirate captured by Alexander the Great defended himself on the ground that be robbed only single ships, while Alexander robbed the whole world. Sir Francis Drake, English admiral known for his gallantry, was actually a pirate; he once captured 30 tons of silver from travelers. Indeed, many English buccaneers would go back to England to divide the fruits of their robberies with the crown and get royal pardons!

An English "robbery" centuries ago survives today in the phrase "To rob Peter and pay Paul." It had its origin When, in the reign of Edward VI, the lands of St. Peter at Westminster were appropriated to raise money for the 'repair of St. Paul's in London.

The greatest cash robbery ever to be solved was that from Brink's Incorporated armored truck at Boston on January 17, 1950. The total haul was $2,755,397.12, of which $1,218,211.29 was in cash. Considered a masterpiece in criminal planning, the robbery was effected by Anthony Pino and ten confederates who were exposed by an admission by one of the men in prison in January of 1956.

The biggest "inside job" occurred in New York City. Richard Crowe, assistant manager of the National City Bank of New York, removed $833,660 from the premises. He was. arrested April 11, 1949.

In 1953, Seth Ramkrishna Dalmia of New Delhi, India, was charged with ombeidement of over $5 1/2 million from his own Bharat Insurance Company.. The bail set for him was the highest ever demanded by any court in the world: $7.9 million.

Of course money — gold, silver or currency — is not the object of all robberies. Highwaymen in 17th and 18th century England used to demand that victims "stand and deliver"; 'beaver hats were considered great sooty. In the 1st century B.C., inter-

26 reption and robbery of grain convoys by pirates nearly resulted in the starvation of Rome.

Oil has been the object of at least two kinds of great robberies in history.

Most oil wells are intended to be vertical and straight; those that deviate from the vertical are usually crooked, in more ways than one. Prospectors with an "angle" have robbed legitimate oilmen by using the slantdrilling technique. They begin drilling eperations on their own property and end up tapping their neighbor's well hundreds of feet away!

Many robberies have not been solved.

Police estimate that thieves took property worth $570 million in 1960. In view of the fact that one burglary occurs every minute in the United States, according to the FBI, it seems remarkable that police recovered 52 per cent of this amount!

Airplanes have been the object of several great robberies in the past two years. On July 24, 1961, an Eastern Airlines Electra en route from Miami to Tampa, was hijacked at gunpoint by a Cuban-born passenger who forced the pilot to fly to Havana. Cuba handed over the plane to an Eastern Airlines crew 22 days later in exchange for a Cuban patrol boat which had been brought to Key West by defectors.

Probably the heaviest single item ever robbed was a 20,906 ton luxury liner with 607 passengers and some 350 crew members aboard. On January 22, 1961, 24 Portuguese and Spanish political exiles and 6 crew members captured the Portuguese cruise ship "Santa Maria" at gunpoint. The rebels took the ship to Brazil where they were 'given asylum, and the passengers and crew were released. On February 4th, Brazil returned the ship to its owners in Lisbon.

The record for jewel robberies stands at $518,000 worth of gems taken from actress Sophia Loren's chalet in England on May 28, 1960.

Robbers found Lady Luck smiling on them (a crooked grin?) the night they raided the Dover Street office of the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Association in London. They discovered the keys of three other branch offices in the safe, and proceeded to tour the branches, gathering $88,000 worth of jewels, watches and plate, all on one October night in 1959.

No history of great robberies would be complete without mention of Robin Hood, the noble bandit who robbed the rich and gave to the poor ... or Jesse

VESTNIK James, the American equivalent of Robin Flood, who had a reward of $10,000 offered for his life . . . or Billy the Kid, last of the big-time, cattle rustlers.

Perhaps the most involved case of robbery ever recorded was that committed by Frederick Emerson Peters, who holds the record for passing had checks. By dint of some 200 impersonations, Peter cashed 28,000 bad checks, which netted him $250,000. He died in 1959 at the age of 73. Among his many philanthropies was a silver chalice .fOr a Mashington, D.C. 'cathedral â&#x20AC;&#x201D; also paid for with a bad check.

DOCTOR SAYS ANY DRUG MAY TURN INTO POISON Warning that "any drug is a potential poison if taken long enough," a physician urged delegates to the California Meftal Association convention recently to re-examine patients before authorizing refill of many types of prescriptions.

Dr. Carl E. Burkland of the Sutter Hospital's medical research foundation of Sacramento, Calif., said: "The tremendous increase in drugs and diagnostic procedures has brought a number of hazards which can be overcome only if the doctor is alert.

"The physician today has a growing responsibility to become acquainted with possible reactions to drugs and diagnostic procedures and with ways of treating the reactions.

"Iatrogenic disease, illness caused by a physician, appears to be increasing in medical practice. This may occur from most any diagnostic procedure of form of treatment. The attitude of the ;doctor, vague conversation or remarks may induce it.

"The more emotional and anxious the patient, the more likely it is to occur. Only about 50 per cent of the ;people who come to a doctor's office have a real physical ailment. The rest come for treatment of anxieties and nervousness which find expression in physical form."

Citing the increasing use of tranquilizers, Dr. Burkland commented at a news conference , that "it costs a lot of money to be nervous these days."

"Tranquilizers sometimes are necessary," he said, "but there are certain dangers which must be recognized. For instance, they tend to lower the blood pressure, If a patient taking tranquilizers has an accident and goes into shock, this could lead to blood vessel collapse.

Wednesday, October 23, 1963 ANIMALS MAY GIVE CANCER TO MAN Cancers in animals, including dogs, may constitute a more or less overlooked hazard of transmission to man, a government cancer specialist said reC ently, Dr. Michael Shimkin of the National Cancer Institute said so in noting the growing research interest in the possibility that some forms of human cancer may be attributed to viruses: In an article in Public Health Reports, a publication of the U.S. Public Health Service, Shimkin said the possible contributory relationship of imam's biological environment to the cancel' problem "has been more or less forgotten until the resurgence of studies on the virus etiology (causation) of cancer."

"Tumors in animals are of interest today," he wrote, "not onl y because they may demonstrate environment factors shared by man, but because some animal species may be vectors (carriers) and transmitters of viruses that may cause neoplasms (maglignancies', in man."

He said cancers occur among cattle, fowl, cats, dogs, fish, frogs, reptiles, and among wild animals kept in zoological parks, Declaring that dogs develop. a large number and variety of tumors, the scientist said: "Dogs are the animals with which many Americans have the closest contact, and in our culture they seem to be considered as 3-year-old children with fur.

"Until now, the possible neoplastic significance of contact with dogs has not been considered, but the possibility is one that deserves reappraisal with modern methods."

He said it's now thoroughly established that viruses are the cause of some cancers in chickens, mice, rats and rabbits, and "less firmly established situations are seen in frogs, squirrels, deer and cattle."

TEXAS FARMERS HAIL INSECTICIDE LAW The Texas Legislature recently passed a new pesticide control bill and it is awaiting Gov. Connally's signature.

The bill, chemical industry and Farm Bureau spokesmen have said, greatly strengthens the control of registration and sale of agricultural pesticides in Texas.

There were reports last year that ineffective crop and livestock poisons Were being sold in Texas, mainly due to the weakness of the state statutes.

Agents of White's department will collect samples of pesticides formulated or sold in Texas and the state chemist at Texas A. and M, College will analyze them.

The Farm Bureau actively supported the new regulation and hailed it as money saver for Texas farmers and ranchers since the new regulation should serve as a ,deterrent to lowgrade pesticides being sold.

by Columbus and his crew, which included men of eight different nationalities, was named San Salvador and is believed to be one of the small islands — probably Watling's Island — in the Bahamas. October 12th, Columbus Day, is now a legal holiday in more tban two-thirds of the states. Another Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci — for whom America was named — was, however, the first to state authoritatively that America is a separate continent and not a part of Asia, as Columbw believed.

--SPJSTCAVITIES, CtIRRHOSTS, PEANUTS Neither between-meal snacks nor meals with high , sugar content make any difference in the number of derital cavities, scientists attending the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) were told.

The statement was made by Dr. Rosario Yap 'of the University of Oregon's Child Study Clinic, at an IADR meeting recently in Pittsburgh, Pa. He drew the conclusion after analysis of a 9year study of the total number of cavities in children's teeth.

He said 20 girls and 17 boys "from a middle socio-economic class having reasonably ,good dental care, living in a nonfluoride community" were examined twice a year. At each exam, 7-day On

food diaries were collected and, once a year, x-rays of their teeth were taken.

No attempt was made to restrict diet in any way, Dr. Yapp said. Every type of sugar-containing food was counted, except for fresh fruits.

Various statistical methods for analyzing the information showed, no relationship between numbers of cavities and sugar consumption, ne reported, Dr. Yap pointed out that there is a characteriStic peak in the number of cavities at age eight or nine and said this suggests that tooth decay is related to( some other factor than intake of refined sugar items.

More long-term studies have been started, he added. o A marked tendency to suffer from cirrhosis of the liver has been noted among men who develop cancer of the floor of the mouth, a New York City epidemiologist observed at the same IADR meeting.

A similar correlation does not exist between cirrhosis of the liver and cancers of other areas of the mouth, lips and pharynx, added Dr. Andrew Z. Keller. And no correlation was found between the occurrence of oral cancers and a number of other diseases studied, including diabetes, generalized arteriosclerosis ar syphilis.

The study, undertaken at the John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health, showed that lip ' cancer is exteremly rare in Negroes, but occurs with unusual frequency among ;white males, especially those living in the South and West. Upper lip cancer occurs much less frequently than lower lip carver and at an older age.

A total of 2,177 male patients treated for oral cancers in Veterans Administration Hospitals in all Parts of the country were involved in the survey.

A peanut is by far the most common foreign object found in the lungs of children between one and three years old, investigators at the Montreal, Canada Children's Hospital have reported.

The problem of children breathing or swallowing a foreign object all the way into their lungs amounts to one in 1,000 admissions to the hospital, they reported at a convention earlier this month of the Canadian Association of Radiologists.

Observations from a 20-year survey showed that most of the foreign

objects were food products, thus soft and not normally visible by x-ray, they said. Then diagnosis depends upon secondary signs, such as chronic coughing and choking, connected with x-ray film evidence of swelling of lung tissue and bronchoscopic findings.

HARIVIGNE THERAPY REGULATES GROWTH Harmone therapy has been effective in regulating height, Dr. M. James Whitelaw of San Jose, Calif., says.

"Under proper, strict supervision, hormonal treatment of excessive height and short stature in the vast majority of children produces good results that have far-reaching psychological effects."

He said the final height of both boys and girls can be estimated fairly accurately when the child is eight or nine years old, adding: "Therapy at this age would be expected to produce far better results than that attempted at the beginning of puberty when little growth potential remains."

Dr. Whitelaw said that treatment of excessive hei ght in girls (those who by scientific calculation are to be five feet, seven inches tall, or more) can be regulated with appropriate hormone therapy if treatment is begun between the ages of 9 and 12.
