Bratr Frank Hejl, st. byl proptOten z nemocnice a co jsem doslechl byl prijat do naSeho domova odpoeinku, ale co je na torn pravdy nevim. Rovned bratr Jan Gajevsky z Orchard se zotavil tak dalece, de mohl byt prevezen do nemocnice blizko domova.

From The Editor's Desk Christmas Customs Exchanging. Presents: Chrictmas is the season for exchanging presents. If you have ever been alone or confined at Christmas time, you know how empty the season can be. Men in the aemed forces overseas also know how this feels. Only then do you really feel grateful and happy for the Cheer that accompanies gifts or presents given you.

There will be places that need your charity this Christmas season. If you can, don't overlook them. These places include: Home for the Aged, Schools for the Blind, Hospitals, Mental Hospitals, Prisons and Detention Institutions, Children's Homes, Crippled Children's Homes, and perhaps others.

The gifts given by the Three Wise Men are very probably the source of our present-day custom of gift-giving at Christmas. We give to those we cherish.

In many countries, gifts are given on January 6 instead of December 25, such as in Poland, Italy, Russia, Spain, and Latin American nations.

The belief that St. Nicholas brings gifts stems from the legend of the generosity of St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. When he died on December 6th, in the year 345, he was revered for his generosity and kindness, and it became the custom to give gifts on the date of his death. For many centuries, Christians gave gifts on both December 6th and 25th, but the two dates gradually fused into one.

The practice of present-giving was also an old Roman custom called Strenae.

On New Year's Day the people of ancient Rome exchanged gifts of sweet pastry, lamps, precious stones, and coins as tokens of their good wishes for a happy new year. In most countries today, gift-giving has become a part of the actual Christmas celebration. A custom prevailed in Holland whereby children were taught to save their pennies in a pig-shaped earthenware box. This was not to be opened until Christmas, and

was called the "feast pig." From this custom, we have our "piggy banks." In Russia, the legendary figure is "Kolya," who goes about during Holy Night, put' ting little wheat cakes on windowsills to be eaten on Christmas Day. This word referred to a dance accompanied by the playing of flutes. The Romans brought this custom and its name to Britain. A hymn is usually more solemn; a corol is generally festive. The first Christmas hymns were written in the 5th Century, and were profound and solemn. A Latin hymn that became popular and was translated in the 16th Century was the beautiful, "Flos e radice Jesse," (A spotless rose is growing). It was set to music by the German priest, Praetorius. In German it is "Es Ist Ein Ros' Entsprungen" (Lo, 'er a Rose is Blooming). The birthplace of the true Christian carol was Italy, where St. Francis of Assisi was the first to introduce the joyous carol spirit, which soon spread all over Europe. He composed in Latin. A translation of one of his 13th Century carols has become the familiar theme of the beloved "Messiah,"

by Handel.

Nacht, Heilige Naciat," (Silent Night; Holy Night). It was written by a parish priest in the small Austrian town of Oberndorf, near Salzburg, in 1818. It had been lost among the manuscripts of the church choir for some time, until it was found by a music lo-er who brought it to the Rainers, a is tinily of singers, in the Tyrol. They buga•to sing it at concerts, and it gradually became widely used in Austria and ( ermany.

On their American concert to ir, from 1839 to 1843, they brought it wi h them, and within a few short year: it had captured the hearts of all A nericans who had heard it. All over tr e world, it has become the most beloved of all Christmas carols. Here is how it was discovered: On Christmas eve, 1818, the parish priest of Oberndorf, Josef Mohr, was notified that repairs on the church organ, which had broken dow a few days before, could not be finished in time for the midnight church services.

This was a great disappointmei t to the priest and his flock, since the i iusic for the High Mass could not be suag withcut organ accompaniment. To lessen the disappointment, Father Mohr decided to surprise his people with a new Christmas song. He sat down immediately, and wrote three stanzas of a carol, the first of which was inspired by the sight of a baby whose ailing mother he had visited the day before. When he finished the text, he brought it to hi.; friend, Franz Gruber, teacher and anist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. Gruber composed the tune within a fe ,v- hours.

At midnight Mass, the [hushed c mgregaton heard the first perform Ince of Stile Nacht. Today, a modest rnJnurnent in Oberndorf perpetuates the memory of the men who gave us "Silent Night": Josef Mohr, and Franz. Gruber.

German mystery plays. One of the most popular mystery plays was the Paradise play, representing the creation of man.

This Paradise play was a favorite pageant for Advent.* It seems fairly certain that the original home of the Christmas tree is the left bank of the upper Rhine River in Germany, where the tree decorations included, for the first time, lights of some sort. The tree was brought to America as a eherished companion of German immigrants in about 1700. It was in America that the custom originated of setting up lighted Christmas trees in public places. The Christmas tree became fairly well known to the general public here about the middle of the 19th Century through German Catholics an.d Lutherans. They run for an hour, and then the spring breaks, and the legs come off, and nothing remains but a contribution to the dusty heap.

But surely that need not and ought not be the whole of Christmas — only _a single day of generosity, ransomed from the dull servitude of a selfish year — only a single night of merry-making, celebrated in the slave-quarters Of a selfish race! If every gift is the token of a personal thought, a friendly feeling, an unselfish interest in the joys of ethers, then the thought, the feeling, the interest, may remain long after the gift is forgotten.

As a preliminary to the outlined business of 1. • e meeting; consideration was first given to some other interesting matters -which were brought up. Sister Bessie Franck tad been addressed by a member of long standing in regard to the matter of death benefits proceeding from an SPJST certificate. The subject member requested that his relationship to i bis Certificate should, be so ae'ranged that the p roceeds whic. 1- weuld be paid upon his death should :,of included in his estate. On first sion it appeared that he was co..ce.. in regard to the proceeds being to ether than his wife, who is the tamed beneficiary. Closer consideration revealed, however, that he probably considered his estate to be of such proportions that even though his wife would be the actual recipient of the proceeds if he should precede her in death, the fact that his estate would be 'charged with the. amount of life insurance paid to named beneficiaries as a result of his directions, his estate would be required, to bear an additional amount of estate tax. In consequence, we agreed Bet this member's matter of concern should be directed to the attention of the Supreme Lodge where the papers arranging for the necessary assignment of control over the certificate in question could be prepared.

Security was passed around. It was decided that arrangements should be made to have representatives of the Social Security Administration come and address our group at an early fortlu pming date, Sister Franck and Brother Kamas will conduct an inquiry into the amount of interest that can be aroused among prospective attendants to a seminar to be held for the purpose of having the Social Security people present.

Our attention was next turned to the Self-Employed Individuals' Pension Program which becomes effective , on January 1, 1963. Our Class M (Retirement Income at Age Ga) should prove to become a most ideal vehicle to carry our Order into tie prospective retirement planning of many members and many prospective members, 'That is something that we decided to give a great deal of attention to in the months to come.

As a wind-up, Sister Franek treated us to coffee and cake, and some of the most delicious pie. She urged ns to do extreme justice to these pies. She said she bad found a way to take the calories out of them. To me they looked as tli'ough they were a special depository of calories, and they were very, vers e good.

Wouldn't it be a nice Christmas spirit if the sons and daughters would call up their mothers and fathers and say, "Mother, today is Christmas and we are calling to take you to the special Lodge No. 88 Christmas Dance, where you will be glad to visit with some of your old friends and listen to some real nice Czech music." All you have to do is get on the phone and call them now, so you don't forget.

The membership, in our past annual meeting, voted to let the board of Trustees go forward in building our new lodge. It sure would be nice to see more brothers and sisters attend our dance socials. The lodge belongs to the members and supporting their activities will make it successful. Won't you do your part and visit your lodge once in a while? Brother Edwin Holub offered to buy two extra turkeys and donate them to the Christmas party. Thank you Brother Ed. Brother Holub stated that he has had difficulty in purchasing Santa's stockings as Santa Claus is really "overstocked" but he's making connections with Santa Claus in Dallas, but whatever Santa brings will be a treat, I'm sure.

Under new business we discussed our sick friends. Brother Edwin Holub, reported his father, Brother John Holub, is still very ill and weak. Sister Annie Pavelka is ill, and Brother Grover Huckabee is in the hospital but improving.

We hope you will all be well and up and around very soon. It was nice to see Sister Polly Vicha back with us again.

Sister Inez Zalman is at home after four weeks of being in the hospital. Sister Helen Holub is out and around, at a slow, pace, but looks wonderful as she has put on a few pounds which is very becoming. Believe it or not she's always hungry and Brother Edwin really keeps the pantry shelves filled these days. All joking aside, we are very ha ppy to see her doing so well as she was very ill a few short weeks ago. But miracles do happen, as it did in her case. Nice to see everyone and do come back to our meetings and let's have a successful 1963.

As always, we gave the pledge to our flag, which was said by our president, Bro. Barina. The minutes were read by Bro. Secretary Jerry Stepan and approved. Then Bro. Felix Volcik, Treasurer, read the report from the last meeting.

We made the meeting short. The program started, which was led by Mrs. Dorothy Shearer from Bay City. She has four daughters and they belong to our lodge. Thanks to her for going to so much, effort to teach them and coming that long distrance. The three children of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Pool of Austin also came and they also belong to our lodge. These children are' all grandchildren of Brother and Sister V. H. Barina. Then there was one more little girl, Miss Elizabeth Marie Svoboda. She also is our member. These children gave a skit, depicting Christ's birth in Bethlehem.

They recited some poems in Czech, and also sang some songs.

Then Santa Claus came. He had a big bundle of goodies for the tots, but he sure asked those children if they were good before he gave them their bag of nuts, candy, and fruit. He asked them what they wanted Santa Claus to bring them for Christmas. Bro. Felix Volcik of Smithville, and Bro. James Zimmer hanzel of La Grange donated some of the goodies, together with one other person, whose name I have forgotten. We thank you all for helping Santa Claus!

After that, the Sisters made good hot coffee and brought on the plates with eats. Bro. Kotulan donated coffee.

Hope you all will excuse me. I don't remember if I had written anything about Brother Frank Kruppa who passed away not so long ago. They used to live here nearly all their lives. After he retired they made La Grange their home; but he came back to take his resting place among his old friends at Barton's Creek Cemetery, so you know he liked to live here. He and Bro_. Joe Habrlec built our SPJST Hall, of which all are are proud, and they built it to stay.

We also voted to send Christmas cards to those sick members of our lodge who don't go anywhere any more.

I guess this is my last letter for this year. They always do a wonderful job with their acts and songs and whatever they are assigned to perform. The club leader Sister Tillie Helmcamp comes up with all these ideas, and they follow her instructions.

Something we always look forward to is the annual Lodge No. 88 meeting.

This took place Sunday, Dec. 9th, starting at 10:30 a.m. with a nice attendance.

The day started off with the monthly lodge meeting first, followed by the annual meeting.

Brother President Tim Kostom opened the meeting. Reports by all Committees were given and good reports they were, with progress for sure.

That makes all of us members, feel good and want to Work that much harder in the future. Seems as if everyone is enthusiastic about our future home of Lodge No. 88, and therefore anyone that was called upon to serve as an officer or part of a committee eagerly accepted. That's the kind of spirit you can exp ect to see here at Lodge sa.

Most all of the past year's officers were re-elected to serve for the cornming year. The entertainment committee was increased and we are happy to have them. It has 'been a pleasure for me and my husband, Bill Vornsand, to serve as members of the committee for the past year, and therefore we have gladly accepted to serve again for the coming year of 1963.

Some of the new members appointed are Harry and Mickie Rice, Oscar Helmcamp, Johnny Sula, E. J. Stang, Otto Mikeska and Roselle Ruland. Welcome aboard!

The newspaper's reply was, in part, as follows: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give your life its highest beauty of ofl jay. Alas; how dreary the world would be if there were no Santa Claus!

It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no Childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. Ita,OiLUTION OF SYMPATHY We, the undersigned members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, in behalf of our membership, wish to express our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family on the death of their father and grandfather, and our beloved lodge brother JOHN SRALJK who died in Renger Hospital November 29, ll62, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and :; days. The deceased was born in Johanova, Czechoslovakia, June 24. 1875.

Funeral services were held December 1, 1982, at the Czech Moravian Brethren Church at Vestin, where final rites were conducted at 9:30 a.m. by the Rev. F. J. Kostohryz. Burial was in Vestin Cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, Julius Sralik of Hallettsville and Herman Sralik of Yoakum, Texas; four daughters, Mrs. Julia Roeber and Mrs. Victoria Brown of Hallettsville; Mrs. Minnie Glover and Mrs. Elsie Hataway both of Victoria, Texas. Also seven grandchildren.

Brother Sralik was a faithful member of tlek . SPJST Lodge No. 4 and attended meetings regularly, as long as he was close to his lodge.

In his memory the lodge will send $400 to the SPJST REST HOME in Taylor, Texas. May our Lodge brother rest in eternal peace.

THE ART OF CHRISTMAS BUYING Gift-buying is an art.

But fortunately it is an art that anyone can master if he or she tries.

For many years we labored under the advice: "Select a gift that you would like to have and it is certain to please the recipient."

This advice works pretty well for little girls who are invited to birthday parties where only other little girls are guests. It also works for boys in a like manner.

But it won't work at all when the recipient is a grandmother and the giftbuyer is her grandson. Or when father is doing the buying for his little daughter.

The very best formula for successful gift buying is to know well the person who is to receive the gift — and then give some thought to the numbers of items available for this special person.

Studying your family and your friends accrues other beiefits beyond selecting a suitable gift. It often uncovers special talents and interests that strengthen the relationship. It is a great deal of fun to sit down with a blank sheet of paper, close out everybody else and concentrate on one individual for a few moments, jotting down things that you know about him or her, • ferreting out what motivates the person, what pleases him, whether he loves attention or functions better when left alone.

With this information in hand, choosing a gift becomes a matter of selection.

Nor can you type your friends. Shorter trips, with an item or so or three or four is easier to do, makes shopping a pleasure instead of a fiasco.

One friend of ours says she's been hinting broadly for years that he loves luxurious perfumed soap, shelled pecans and charms for her bracelet. She almost never gets these things.

Initialing the gift is only one way to personalize it. You also personalize it when you select an assortment of fishing lures for the man who follows that sport, golf balls for the golf enthusiast, a really good book for the fireside sitter, a fountain pen for the executive type (whether he is a real executive or would simply like to be), a set of highball glasses for the host, a monogrammed shirt for the best-dressed man you know (his tailor will be able to guide you), playing cards, a chess set, a pair of gloves, a gift selection of his favorite tobacco (most men like to select their own pipes, we learned), a gift package of food (cheese, anchovies, nuts, olives, pastries).

Or, if the gifted is female, the choice is even greater. If you choose perfume or cologne, she'll most welcome the kind she usually buys for herself or at least the same type of fragrance. Give her anything that makes her feel cherished —an evening bag, a fur, a manicure set, a pair of frivolous houseslippers, a pegnoir (provided you are not the boyfriend, in which case it is taboo), a silk shirt in her own favorite colors, a piece of fine fabric to sew, or the machine on which to sew it, a bright-colored extra coat that shouts "It's Christmas," a necklace, a bracelet, a pair of alligator shoes, monogrammed stationery, a new car of her own.

BE YOUR OWN JACK FROST Usher in the Christmas season by being your own Jack Frost. Whiten your windows for the holidays in an easy manner.

Choose a design such as stars, bells, trees, reindeer, or messages like Merry Christmas, Season's Greetings.

Then cut your .design out in heavy brown paper or lightweight cardboard.

Use a pattern from' some other decoration, design, etc., if you are not able to draw your own.

Make a thick paste with household cleaning powder and a little water, or pour liquid glass cleanser, undiluted, into a pan or bowl. Add food coloring or a nonpermanent dye, if you like, mixing it well .

Tape the stencil to the window, with cellulose tape or masking tape. Take a cellulose sponge, fill it well with your frostin,g mix and apply liberal quantities around the stencil (let the children ,do this if it's not too for them to reach).

If you're working with colors, use a separate sponge for each shade. If you make a mistake, you can wash away the whole thing. When the holidays are done, wash the frosting off with the same sponge, soaked in warm watr-,:.

Wednesday, December 19, 1962 FIRE CAN SPOIL THE HOLIDAYS Babbs Switch, Caribou and Billings can tell you that a. happy Christmas is a safe Christmas.

Babbs Switch is a small Oklahoma community. On Christmas Eve, 1924, about 150 men, women and children were gathered in the frame schoolhouse for the community's figgest-ever Christmas party. A series of incidents â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a Christmas tree branch brushed against a candle, a kerosene lamp knocked off

a table, and a stage curtain thrown on the flames â&#x20AC;&#x201D; led to fire which destroyed the schoolhouse, killing 36 persons and injuring 40.

In more recent years, church fires occurred in Billings, Mont., and Caribou, Mo. In. Billings, an attendant lighting candles a.::ciclentally set fire to a large velvet curtain behind the altar. Fire spread to a combustible fiber-board ceiling.

around an altar in the auditorium of a church fed a blaze.
