Activities In 1962 Many of our Lodge Halls have wonderful facilities for staging plays and these facilites are not being used because there seems to be a lack of leaders who would take hold and assemble together the many interested members in the Lod ge to Produce a good Czech play.

While not all of our young members can read Czech, they do speak it, and with a little help they could be coached to meet the requirements of their respective parts.

It takes a lot of people to "put on" a play, and while the Director has the final word, he or she needs many other behind-the-stage helpers to make the play a success.

First the type of play must be selected, the number of men and women ascertained and then the roles assigned to the "type" of personality one is ca pable of portraying. The roles have 'to be typed out if there are not sufficient books.

Costumes need to be made or special wardrobes assigned; the prop man has his job cut out for him for he has to assemble all backdrops, furnture, shrubbery and any other item necessary for the various acts. Too, a make-up man is a very necessary person, for he has to create the facial characteristics necessary; a grandmother with white hair out of a younger woman; a man with walrus mustache; wrinkled, hunched, etc. A beautiful heroine, hero, villan, the comed y team etc. In his skillful hands and imaginative mind, the make-up artist make,1 the characters needed for the director's management.

In visiting many of the Lodge Halls in our fraternal Order, we have commented many times to various members that it was a pity that the Czech Play has sung its Swan Song in most of our lodges, because of lack of leaderShip, or someone who Would give it a twirl; that there are still enough of the older Czech membership Who would travel to great distances to see a Czech play, so that it would pay for itself. Then too, the yOunger membership, while they cannot perhaps speak the Czech as fluently, do understand it and apprecate the situations in the plays as written by writers from the old country. A good Czech play has broUght many a hearty laugh, a sympathetic tear, or burst of nostalgia to its audience. Their songs remained in their minds for many a day afterwards.

Everyone knows how the Womanless Wedding or the Tom Thumb Wedding goes over big with the public. Well, our Czech plays on the whole have a wholesome plot amid the old country Czech surroundings and traditions and superstitions, as the case may be, which provoke mirth no end. Laughter today, is one of the most beneficial therapies for a great many ills in this atomic age and it is pretty rare. People have been laughing at the most impossible situations, slapstick comedy, which is coming back, and our Czech plays portray a type of happy life, slower pace, close family ties, community togetherness, where their religious customs were a part of their lives; where the more imaginative young man or woman had a ball which were the basis for these plays. Smetana wrote the Bartered Bride on such simple basis, which become world famous.

SOKOL ZIZKA OBSERVES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY Texas Sokol Units all converged upon the Dallas unit Sokol Zizka, to rejoice With them and celebrate 50 years of existence in the lives and hearts of Czech Sokols in Texas and America. They came from Chicago, Arkansas, and in greetings from California and New York, wishing Good Luck and brotherly love to their band of Dallas Sokols who have been the strength and backbane of the Texas-Oklahoma Southern District of American Sokol Union.

Saturday and Sunday, January 13 and 14th turned out to be cold but pleasant days to bold this Golden Anniversary, and the Hall was packed. The decor car/Ting the "Golden" motif was carried through even in the china on the tables.

It was a piece of engenious imagination, creating the decorative scheme which many of our artistic lodge members would have enjoyed seeing. Two large, square, one-layer cakes decorated in the Golden Anniversary Theme, rested on their platters with their net ruffing, flanked by two eight-candle candelabra, With floral contributions of golden mums were effectively displayed on he stage.

Place cards helped seat the guest for the planned program.

One wing of the front table seated the current Sokol officers, while the other seated guest speakers and Sokol's Board of trustees. All of the tables were covered with spotless white cloths, comfortable chairs in place to create a feeling of Master of Ceremonies, brother Emil Hrabina, led the Sunday afternoon's program, smoothly and efficiently through its long course.

Mayor Earl Cabell, the City of Dallas Mayor, expressed appreciation at the aims and achevements of the Dallas Czechs, congratulating them on the wonderful work they were doing.

The SPJST's President, brother Edward L. Marek and his lady were recognized and brother Marek delivered his address on fraternal spirit and ideals in which

he stated that no other organization has equalled this Organization in carrying out and perpetuating its high ideals; that are "unmatched." He expressed delight at seeing the training of our Youth of this nation; to bring back and stay with the ideals that their forefathers laid for us: that is — Freedom, love for fitness and in pledging themselves to defend this nation of ours come what may — even with our lives if need be.

"We are walking in the footsteps of the men and women who came ahead of us — let us bear in mind that in 1965 the Sokol's existence in America will be 100 years old, while we are today celebrating a Fiftieth Anniversary of ts existence in Dallas; somebody had a goal and unselfish view," declared Brother Marek, "determined to be free men and women — He concluded with a poem appropriate to closing his address.

Brother George Skotak Jr., was recognized as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who stated: "On this memorable day I feel very, very happy to be here. I know that all of our brothers and sisters who are here today feel very proud today celebrating the 50th — the Golden — Anniversary of our Sokol Zizka in such a fine , and beautiful building.

Most all of you, I know, worked very hard, sacrificed a lot of your time this past year but I know it gave you a wonderful feeling to know that working side by side in cooperation is the only way that this can be done. Be the good Lord willing, I hope this year will bring us strength and health that we may work together and be very proud of our achievements. I am very proud to work with this organization and be its member.

As the names of loved ones were recalled, many a work-worn and tired hand groped for a handkerchief, the roster was long, the memories poignant, the moment precious, all deceased Sokois Sokolice who worked unrecognized, unstintingly, years and years to nurse this Sokol baby organization into something which their children would cherisn. To day, most of these past officers and untiring men and women Sokol members are those children of yesteryear with their offsprings chasing each other around the Hall for tomorrow's new leaders. It has been said .hany times that

Brother Mirka Parma, another aggressive young offspring of Sokol parents, addressed the gathering, outlining the background in Europe which prompted two philosophers Drs. Miroslav Tyrs and Henry Fuegner to conceive the Sokol founding based on physical education, moral high ideals, love of country, brother to man, equality, self-discipline, for neither gain nor glory.

Sister Blanche Cihak, Vice-President and Secretary of the American Sokol Unon with headquarters in Chicago, delivered her greetings and well wishes, and compared the founders of the Sokol Movement in Europe with the founders of the Texas Republic, all builders for a better life, in a free land. After the First World War, Czechoslovakia founded Its Republic on those principles upon whcih our own America was founded and this freedom lasted until Hitler wiped out the Republic. She gave a very inspiring message in both languages.

Vestnik's Editor, brother Louis 0. Hoshek, spoke in Czech recalling that he was delegated to initiate the Dallas Sokol Unit into the American. Sokol Union, coming from the Ennis Unit which had already been organized in 1909 as the first Sokol Unit in Texas.

He recalled the calesthenic meetings on the Rezek property, stating that after the workouts, they usually raided goad sister Rezek's ice box.

He recalled many a deceased Sokol who gave of his heart and hand to the Unit all of his life, whose children today are following in their footsteps. As he recalled each name, in our hearts, and in our memories: their spirits answered "present" .to the name, each dead face following the other, our eyes filled with tears, hearts full, for how can mortal man express regret at a loss but to cry.

They were all of modest means; hardworking, thrifty, determined to make something of life in this country, and for the ,generations of children coining after them: they organized; this Sokol Unit.

Brother Hosek, also stated that these men and women were a little more sincere with each other, more humble than we are to each other today; that they truly shared each other's burdens. They were a grand bunch of people whose memory will remain with us forever. -Na Zdar!.

DISTRICT ONE District One will hold its next meeting on the First Sunday in May, 1962 — May 6th — at Kovar, Texas as announced by Brother E. Jakubik of Snook.

District One requests its sister Districts to reserve this date for them and not schedule any other District Meeting on that date. The Lodge No. 38 at Kovar, is located about five miles south of Smithville, Texas.

We certainly had quality, for every body expressed his views on all the subjects which were discussed. We would like for more of our members to come to the meetings to take an active interest in the lodge's doings.

Two new members were admitted to our lodge, namely: Kenny Blaine Kelarek into the juvenile department and Robert Lastovica into the _adult department. Welcome into our lodge. Frank Iflinkovsky Sr. added to his policy and Janette Hruska changed her policy from a twenty year policy to a ten year policy.

We would like o invite all of you to come to Seaton Star Hall on Saturday, February 3 to a Masquerade Dance which will be held on that date. Prizes will be given to the prettiest, ugliest, and the most comical masked . person. So for a good time comet to Star Hall in Seaton.

Music will be furnished by Bob Heisler and his Melody Boys. Don't forget the date and place.

New members submitted were Lester Howard Horton and Steven Ray Duloek, transfer, son of Mr. and Mrs, John Vernon Dulock of Elm Mott. They were accepted by vote to our membership. We are happy to have these new members among us.

by Brother Secretary Pavelka. They were approved as read. Those who helped decorate the hall for the Christmas Party

Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The new 50-star flag was presented to he Czech Choral Group for their participation in the Veterans entertainment.

Brother Henzen is also holding a signed certificate, bearing the signature of Senator Ralph Yarborough, and high Veterans Administration officials, testifying that this flag was flown over the nation's capitol in Washington.

The various committees gave successful reports as usual. Brother Zalman stated this pear's profits were very successful and he thanked all for their efforts as the credit goes to all who worked so hard to make it successful. He also thanked the membership for making the Christmas Party a success.

Brother John Mach thanked all those who helped clean the building and paint the tables, etc. Those who provided their efforts so diligently to perform this duty were: Brother and Sister Adolph Baralek, Brother and Sister John Mach, Brothers Willie Adamek, Willie Mladenka, Johnny Stuckly, Charlie Pavelka, Jim Pavelka, and Rudy Vicha. The good sisters who cleaned the kitchen the day after the Christmas party were Sisters Lydia Vicha.

Willie Mae Pospicil. Mrs. Bob Ehlers helped also to clean the tables and does her share to make our building look neat.

She took all the drapes home and laundered them so nicely. Thank you Mrs. Ehlers for a job well done. They do look pretty.

The new officers of our lodge have been submitted to the Vestnik at an earlier date by Brother Vernon Woods.

Thank you, Brother Woods for sending in the names as this writer failed to get a com plete list of all names of officers at our December meeting in time to be issued in the December issues. I am sorry The meeting was adjournied.

Lodge 35 extends their sympathy to Brother and Sister Ben Pavelka and to Sister Ruby Hazel Pavelka and son Billy Frank at the loss of their father. May he rest in eternal peace and God bless these families. Bill Pavelka died January 11, 1962 at his home in Ben Hur, Texas after a long illness.

I hope all of you had some wonderful holidays; and I also hope that this 1962, to which the whole world is looking forward with such expectancies will be a good one for all of you.

Sister Milberger sent two recipes, one for Angel's Biscuits and the other for Buttermilk Bread.

Angel's Biscuits Five cups flour One-fourth cup sugar Three teaspoons baking powder One cup shortening One package dry yeast Two tablespoons warm water Two cups buttermilk (seven ingre clients).

Sift dry ingredients together cut in shortening. Dissolve yeast in warm wato.' and add with the buttermilk to the dry mixture. Mix well. Turn out on lightly floured board, add more flour if neta',sary and roll to one-fourth inch thickness. Cut, then dip in melted butter and fold over to make pocketbook rote's or you may stack several together and place on greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes.

These biscuits are very good and if you don't want to bake so many at one time, bake as much as you need and put the rest in the refri g erator, it will keep good for a few days and they are just as good as those you baked the first time.

May I suggest that you make a small trial batch for the deep freezer. I believe they would keep in the deep freezer as

Can't you just taste them which all of us put up this summer when with fresh butter and some of that jelly fruit was plentiful. With a mug of coffee or tea, one can have a light supper of it.

Your Editor was cutting back our mimosa and I hauled away the long limbs so that the trashman could pick them up.

We're striving for a bushy, shade tree in pruning our mimosa rather than to have long and sparse-limbed decorative tree.

Dear Members: Our November Meeting was fairly well attended, but still we would like to have seen more of our members attend. Election of Officers was held and all of our old officers were re-elected by acclamation.

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Lodge No. 88 conducted its first meetng for 1962 on January 12 to a large gathering despite the inclement weather. Brother Louis Hanus, the outgoing President, presented the gavel to the incoming President, Brother T. S. Kostom.

As I pointed out n my last letter, I. will list the names of additional committees which were not completed during the annual meeting. There you have them, a capable group of workers with an able chairman. There is no doubt of their success.

Lodge No. 88 is equally proud of its Dramatic Club — Not Only are Czecn plays presented but English plays as well. Club Hlahol was publicized recently in a leadin g Houston daily newspaper as the olodest active Dramatic ClUb Houston and is probably the oldest in the State of Texas — Czech, Enuglish or otherwise. The Directors of this Club are Brother Milo Karel and Brother John ,Sula. They are now planning plays for 1962.

Waco, Texas Dear Brothers and Sisters: Much has been accomplished in 1961 and a lot more can be accomplished in 1962 that will build a bigger and better SPJST. Looking back over the years that have slipped away I can recollect many of our members that were of the opinion that we could not afford a SPJST Rest Home; today we have the nicest rest home anywhere and everyone of us are proud of our Rest Home at Taylor, Texas. Today many of our members era of the ()ninon that we don't need a Youth Camp. This will also become a reality in the not too distant future and again all of us will be very proud of our Youth Camp. We in District Three have made a fair start towards a 'SPJST Youth Camp and as you can see from the report of our District Three treasurer Brother Ben Jarma, Dec. 6 issue of our Vestnik we now have $789.39 in our Youth Camp Kitty to start improving any site whit" we may acquire, this fund has been. building up from Free Will Donations and funds raisin g P roje c ts of ow: lodges in Disitriet Three. This fund is still very small with to start buy,ing a site, but as we look around fol . a site and keep on adding to the fund, we will eventually have enough to buy a site and start improving it.

Talk it over with your older embers of your lodge, ask them to let you raise some money for the Youth Camp and I. am sure that your lodge will work with you to that end. Let's all pUt our shoulders to the task and let's raising every dollar we can and before we know it, we will have, a Youth Camp of our very own.

This Youth Camp will not only serve the youth but practically every member in. District Three, also any visitors that We might have from other districts. We will build 0 Youth Camp to serve the greatest number of our members young and old as well. We want every member to be able to load up the old car and come down to the Youth camp for a week end of fun and relaxation.

There are many things that still have to be worked out before such a camp will become a reality but I am sure that if we put our efforts behind the committees of District Three who are working on this project we will have our Camp and we will all be proud of having shared in helping to bring it about. We still have to find a site that would serve the membership to he best advantage and if any of you members who might. have such a site available that could be developed into a farlip of this type please write to the Chairman of the Youth Camp Site Brother Otto Hanus, 2424 Curley, Waco, and give the committee the location of a site. a.n.d the facillies that may be available -there, The site n.re are looking for should be reasonable in cost, it should have facilities for a lake, or be Located on a stream of natural water or a lake, it should be from 5 acres up in size and be easily reached by car from any direction. It should be fairly centrally located but any site that has the needed facilities will be considered.

Nov: let us all start pushing for the Youth Camp young and old alike and before you know it we will have the nicest Youth Camp anywhere. We will be happy to accept voluntary donations from other districts so if any of you good rnPmbars in other districts would like to help us put over this project, war contributions will be sincerely welcomed and acknowledged, let's all do our best to make this camp- possible.

Wednesday, January 24, 1962 LODGE NO. 88 HOUSTON Dear Members and Friends: We had cur monthly meeting last week Jan. 12, 1962. We had lots of our members to come out to the meeting.

We had the Pledge to the Flag and the minutes and Reports read. After the meeting we had eats and beer given to members who come to the meeting.

Well, the dance on Jan. 13 wars a bang.

Boy, those Sealy Playboys sure can play the music. Boy what a crowd we had. We had people to come for the first time.

Their names are: Mr. and Mrs. Albin Bilski, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Miculka, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Garcio. Glad to see them all. We hope they come back They said they enjoyed themselves and had a grand time. I see Sister and Brother Frank C. Bravanec; Brother and Sister.

Frank Olexa; Brother and Sister Louis Hanes; Sister and Brother J. W. Fusig; Sister Fusig and Sister Vala were busy in the kitchen , and they sure Make good hamburgers and sandwiches. During these past three months I have lived in. a dormitory with girls from far and different places. I've become close to these girls and I will never forget them.

To prove how small thiS world can beta met a girl here- who is from Scion School of Nursing. Her name is Nancy Pavliska and as it turns out we are related to the same people.

The work I have done in New Orleans has been very different from general nursing. My first seven weeks were spent with young women suffering from depression, alcoholism, and other mental disorders. My last five weeks were spent with geriatric patients with senile disorders. These patients were ladies and we refer o them as "Senior Citizens." They captured my heart with their dear simple ways. It is a pathetic thing to know that these old people will never get well.

They are alone in the world with only the care and love of a nurse to brighten their withering life.

Mental illness, I have found, is an illness that is far too little understood by the public. Mental patients are not repulsive individuals and are not to be locked up from reality. Instead they are persons like you and -me. The only difference being that they cannot face everyday problems with sane maturity.

Besides studying and working, I have spent a lot of time enjoying New Orle'an's recreational facilities and night life. The famed old "Bourbon Street," the French Market, and the French Quarters are facinating as well as exciting features of this French City. My Thanksgiving and New Year holidays were made especially happy ones by a very special person from. Dallas. I was fortunate to have spent six days in Dallas at Christmas.

I attended our Teen-Agers' Christmas formal and was very happy to be with them ae:ain.

While in New Orleans, I received several letters from my .s p,mT friends, It was wonderful knowing so many of you remembered me. Thank you, Mr. Hosek, for sending the Vestnik to me. My friends read it and were impressed by cur Order and its work. To me it was as if part of "home" came here each week.

I'm looking forward so to the time we can all be together again. I have missed you all and I am eager to get back into the swing of things once again.

Reporf CoL,_ The common cold is as common as ever. Surveys conducted during the past few years indicate that this condition brings more patients to the doctor than any other disease, and that the average adult has about two or three colds a year.

Medical investigators have learned a great deal during the past generation or so. They are learning more and more about causes, although they have not yet managed to develop methods of cure and prevention, But the time is rapidly coming when this situation will alter for the better, when physicians will be able to control one of man's most stubborn ailments.

One of the leading investigators in the field Dr. Harry F. Dowling of the University of Illinois' Department of Medicine in Chicago, recently com pleted a review of current progress and problems.

In the first place, there are no diagnostic tests or objective signs, such as characteristic changes in the nose and throat, which could only be the result of a cold.

A cold is something defined by its symptoms only.

We have come a long way in understanding why people catch colds. Most beliefs of the past are of little help, as Dr. Dowling indicates in his report: "Most old wives tales are probably associated with the cause of the common cold than with that of any other disease.

The night air, sitting in a draft, lack of sleep, nervous tension, fati gue, overwork, improper diet, exposure to sudden changes in weather, too cold winds, or too warm winds -- colds have been blamed on all of these and many other tb ings."

Some of the above factors may play a role in bringing on attacks; after all, anything that weakens us, lowers our resistance to infections of all sorts. But they are secondary at best, however. For example, the Chicago investigator has found through experiments that chilling may increase coughing and sneezing and thereby promote the spreading of colds.

But it does not cause colds in the first place.

Colds are more common in the winter â&#x20AC;&#x201D; not primarily because of chilling but because it is during the winter that we live and meet indoors, with doors and windows shut tight, and pass on our colds. We send our children to schools where similar conditions prevail and there they can acquire the infections of other children. Other tests indicate that

T N Z K--- WEST, TEXAS fatigue, brought about by keeping volunteers awake for one to three nights, does not increase the frequency of colds appreciably.

Viruses are the basic cause of colds. Dr. Dowling and his associates, as well as scientists in England, have produced colds in volunteers simply by using injections of either one of two viruses, known as the "HI" and "2060" varieties.

But this is only part of the story. A number of different types of viruses probably are involved, most of them still unidentified..

Furthermore, a temporary immunity l i.Y1st one type has no effect on other pea, which is one reason why colds recurring. The best treatment at present is to take standard medicines which reduce coughing and sneezing, and to stay at home during the coughing-sneez,ing period, mainly so as not to infect others.

Meanwhile, according to Dr. Dowling, the future is bright, "I believe," he writes, "that within a few years a vaccine composed of many if not most of the viruses that cause the common cold will be .available â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Although booster injections every year or two will probably be necessary, many people will consider this a small price to pay in order to remain free from the world's greatest nuisance, the common cold." â&#x2122;Ś CROP ROTATION GOOD PRACTICE College Station.

Methods of disease control in crops have been getting fancier in recent years, but the practice of crop rotation is still one of the most effective, says Harlan Smith, extension

Continuous cropping of the same field with the same or closely related crops year after year will result in increased plant disease troubles, Sinith pointed out. A disease of only slight importance the first year may carry over in the soil and become more serious each succeeding year.

Many disease organisms, such as those causing downy mildew, wheat rust and tomato or potato late blight, are windborne. Others are carried on or in the seed. All of these diseases may occur On new land. After a disease organism is introduced into a new field it may linger until the infection finally reaches serious proportions. Corn smut is a good example of a fungus that is carried to a new field by wind borne spores, and then survives in the soil for several seasons.

Newly cleared woodland or recently plowed grassland is usually as free of soil-inhabiting plant disease organisms as any land that can be found. Smith says farmers and ranchers should make every effort to keep such soil diseasefree.

A plant disease already established in a field often can be avoided by planting a crop that is not susceptible to that disease, Smith advises. Farmers should learn to recognize diseases, and when they occur, should plant a different or resistant crop for several seasons. Some disease organisms may live in the soil for years, even when a susceptible crop is not grown. Others can be controlled after the land is planted to non-susceptible crops for only a few seasons.
