Rok 1959 peel a stal se historii Hledime zpet se zadostu.einenim na dosaZcne dobre vysledky a citime uspokojeni proto, te jsme ziskali nove eleny, povzbudili einnost mlaclete, docilili lepg ich navgtev nag ich sclrazi radovYch i distriktnich a i finanene jsme znaene pokroeili. liledime-li zpet radujenie se s toho, ze jsme pospolu v bratrskern duchu pro dobro Bratrstva na g eno pracovati. — Co dobreho smutneho nas potkalo, spoleene jsme sdileli.

Vzrastu ktery byl docilen v mmuiem roce a co nas deka v tomto roce snadno budeme moci spoleene hlecleti "°pet vstr c. tspech nas 'deka ye svorne praci.

Stojime na pheatku tohoto roku 1960 na prahu na gi Jednoty a vidime pied sebou novy obzor, novy rok v kterem se chceme venovati novYm slutbam v oratrskem snateni. PHletitost jest neolamezeno, a chceme se 46novat akolfm nadg' ene, povzbuzene minulYm aspechem. — Chceme lu gtiti novoroeni resoluce bratrskou slatbou na gim sestram a bratram, slutbou nagemu narodu jako dobti Wane demokratickeho naroda. New Year's Message from the President of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, DEAR SISTERS AND BROTH 1959, has passed and is now history. We look back with satisfaction at the achievement's we made the past year, and they give us a feeling of satisfaction, for we made gooti in the writing of new members, promoting youth activities and the general attendance of our regular Lodge and District meetings, and we also made good gains financially.

As we look back, that which we rejoice over the most is that we work together in a true spirit of Brotherhood, and our Order prospered. The' happiness and the sorrows that, befell us we share together. The growth we have achieved in the past year inspire us and the tasks that await us in the future will be much easier for us to perform.

Standing on the thrcshhold of 1960, we, the members of our Order see before us a new horizon, a year in which we will dedicate ourselvei to'continued service in Fraternal work. We have before us unlimited opportunities and these we shall solve by our inspiration through success in the past Facing the new year our resolution should be to serve our Sisters and Brothers in a Fraternal spirit and to serve our nation as good guardians of democracy. These youth movements in our society in addition to being Fraternal are patriotic and, and civic in nature, They are based On sound, moral, and social principles, so let's all get behind this movement in our Order and help train the leaders of tomorrow.

I wish to thank all of our officers, organizers, youth directors, and the youth and lodge workers and all other for their loyalty and sincere help they have given our SPJST during the year of 1959.

We have had a very productive year in 1959. We have made history in writing members and insurance as well as promoting the interest in Youth activities and social functions in our lodge's as well as in the district's. This year will be long remembered as one of the most progressive years in the history of the SPJST and I sincerely hope that we will be able to continue this record in the years . ahead.

Up to date, Districts number 1; 3; 5, and 7 have reached and passed their quotas and there is a possibility that another District will reach its quota before December 31. The quota for the State was reached some time ago.

We have issued 1,896 certificates for the amount of $2,648,500 of life insurance this year, which is a record we should all be proud of.

With the "Miss SPJST" of 1960 contest getting underway, January 15, we should be able to secure many new members again. So I wish to urge all of you to take advantage of this contest and select candidates for the "Miss SPJST" to represent your lodge and help you write new members.

In closing I wish to thank all of you for your kind cooperation and good will extended me throughout the year and may we work in harmony again in 1960 to help promote the progress of our SPJST Order. With best regards, I remain.

Failure Can Be Stepping Stone

A friend of mine, mother of a preschool child, was standing over the stove cooking breakfast. She asked her youngest to bring her an egg from the ice box. The child fumbled and dropped it.

Frightened, he began to cry.

His mother carefully showed him how to clean up the mess and then said, `'Now bring me another." The answer was a timid "I can't. I'll drop it again."No you won't," said the mother bellderly, "you will be more careful this time." The child brought the second egg safely.

A high school senior signed up for a high school chemistry course. He did badly, and begged to drop the cow ee "I hate lab work; I can never do it." The father went to see his instructor.

On the latter's advice he had the boy take an aptitude Lest. It was clear that chemistry was not among the boy's major aptitudes. The father agreed to let the boy drop the course and substitute something else.

Winners I Statewide Hybrid Sorghum Program From A. and M. College — Larry Johnson, a Parmer County 4-H Club boy, is the top winner in the 1959 Texas Hybrid Grain Sorghum Production program. His yield of 8,840.3 pounds from an acre of TX660 was produced under irrigation and gave him the overall state honors.

The top yield without irrigration was Made by Dan Pustejovsky, Route 2, Hillsboro, with 6,137 pounds from an acre of RX610. Both used anhydrous ammonia before planting and Johnson arade a second application as a sidedressing.

The complete list of winners as released by Ben Spears, extension agronomist, included in the irrigated section Jim Shearhart, a Deaf •Smith County 4H boy, with a yield of 8,586.8 pounds an acre — second; Harold Shearhart, Rt. 1 Hereford, third, with a yeildi of 8,452 pounds; fourth was Donald Smithson, a Castro County 4-H boy, with a yield of 8;442 pounds and fifth was a joint entry by Mack and Jack Thompson, also Castro County 4-H members with 8,264.8 pounds.

Following Pustejovsky in the dryland division for Extension Districts 4, 5, 8 and 9 were Paul Sulak, Hill County, with 5,737.5 pounds for second; third was Edd Mikeska, Bell County, 5,418.8 pounds an acre; Carroll Hatter, Sr., McLennan County, was fourth, with 5,331 pounds and Roy Dean Tomasek, a Milam County 4-H boy, was fifth with 4,204.8 pounds an acre. eports From Local Lodges TO ALL MEMBERS OF DISTRICT II GRANtAR, TEXAS Dear Brothers and Sisters: After careful and studied considera tion, I present myself to you as a candidate for the position of District Director of our District II of the SPJST at the coming Convention to be held in San Antonio in June of 1960. It is not only my own desire, but also the wish of many other members of the Order, that I be a candidate. It has always been my longing to serve the Order whenever and wherever possible, and I feel that this is a challenge which must not be passed up. I fully realize the responsibilities involved, but with my many years as a local official of Lodge Komerisky, I feel fully and capably qualified.

At the present time I am the alternate Director of District II, and I assuredly feel that a promotion to a full . Di-, rector is in order.

My own membership in the SPJST dates back 26 years, During most of that time I have been favored With some responsibile office of our local Lodge and am currently serving as Financial Secretary. I have held this same office of Financial Security for the last five or six years. Incidentally, the family mem,bership in the SPJST dates back to its founding on July 1st, 1897.

During the last several years it has been my privilege to serve on the Board of Education of the Granger Independent School District, which Board I am now serving as secretary.

I fell that my experience with the many years of SPJST work, as well as private and public husiness affairs, should qualify and recommend me to the position for which I am now announcing. I shall most certainly welcome your full support and assistance.

District Calendar

The following plans and rules were adopted for our "Miss SPJST" sales promoting program.

1. Inter-Lodge Contest.

A. Each lodge will be entitled to one "Miss SPJST" candidate in the contest.

B. One additional candidate for each one hundred members in Lodge.

C. Candidate must be a member of SPJST at least 6 months prior to January 15.'1960.

D. Age: 16 years and not over 20 years

by January 15, 1960, and single E. Contest starts Jan. 15, 1960 and ends March 15, 1960. All applications must be postmarked not later than March 15, 1960 to count in contest.

F. Candidates will refer prospects to local lodge organizers only, no points wilibe given for prospects referred to and written by Supre.tne Lodge Officers.

G. Candidate with greatest amount of insurance sold will represent her lodge in the District Contest.

Local lodge should give a consolation prize to girls who will be eleminated in the inter-lodge contest.

2. Rules for District Contest: A. Candidates will be judged by impartial judges on the folliwing qualifications: Personality 30% Speech 25% Poise 20% Beauty 20% Talent 5% B. District Officers and Youth Directors shall be responsible for the selection of impartial judges for their district contest.

C. Girls to wear semi-formal dresses in contest.

Each District to give consolation prizes to girls who will be eliminated in District Contest.

The Supreme Lodge will give a bonus of $25.00 to the candidate who sells the largest amount of insurance in her District.

3 Rules for Convention Contest: A. Judging will be done by impartial judges on same basis of qualifications as in District Contest.

B. Girls will wear formal dress in contest.

C. A special committee will hire judges for the contest.

D. Awards and remunerations of expenses to convention to be determined in Supreme 'Ledge meeting of January 14, 1960.

E. Day and time Of contest to be announced at a later date.

The Sick Benefit is due again as of January 1. Last year all claims that were turned in properly with the bills were paid and the Sick Benefit has a small balance left over and did not have to go into the red or have to be paid out of the local Lodge treasury. It is $5 per member a year and you have to be 16 years or older to be entitled to belong and we have to have 50 members by April 1 to have it in effect. You can pay this in the next meeting or mail it to Jay Dee Waggoner, 2107 Ross Avenue, Fort Worth 6, Texas, in case there are not 50 members by April 1, those who have paid will get their $5 refunded to them.

We want to wish a speedy recovery to Brother J. R. Bartek who has been in the Hospital for the past 9 days but is back at his home and is doing fine now, and we hope that it will not be long before Brother Bartek is back to normal again.

I also at this time want to thank each and everyone for the cards, flowers and each act of kindness that was shown me and my family during the sudden death of my rather.

District Youth Leaders Addresses

•'Wednesday, January 0,` 1960 future. So, let's all give them our continued support for in this way they will know they are appreciated.

During the first half of 1960, a con test will be held to select a "Miss SPJST" Each lodge will have one or more candidates from which one will be chosen to represent her lodge Then, at each district'meeting, a "Miss District" will be chosen and go on to the Convention to vie with the other contestants. From this group will be selected the "Miss SPJST" which would be an honor for any young lady. The /nettled by which the girls are chosen will be printed in the Vestiiik.

As many of you may already know, Lodge No. 84 will be 50 years young February of 1960. It is our wish to commemorate this occasion by the celebration of our Golden Anniversary. Everything for this celebration is still partly in the planning stage, but the date will be the week-end of the 20th of February. That Saturday evening, there will be a dance and on Sunday, February 21, dinner, followed by, guest speakers and a program. Watch further issues of the Vestnik for more details.

Because of this celebration in February, there will be no other occasion of this type for the remainder of the year unless otherwise notified. And, in futunre years, our annual celebration Will the, be, held in February instead of in summer as in the past. The reason for this change is that during the • sumfiler months, there are so many other activities, that sometimes these different occassions might tend to conflice And, February was chosen for future annual celebrations for, after all, our own lodge was begun in that month almost 50 years ago.

Three of our members have been on the sick list. They are Henry Kalmus and Diane Baleja. Released from the hospital only recently after a bout with the virus was Alan Baleja. May each of you be fully recovered now and enjoying the best of health. We hope each of you had a wonderful holiday season and our wish for all of you is a wonderful 1900!

Our last meeting in December held on the 13th, was well attended as Santa Claus came to visit the young and old.

First we held a short meeting then at 2 o'clock had a short program. Then after the program old Santa Claus came to visit. He had gifts and fruits-and candy for all the children.

Mrs. Crones and I want to thank the lodge for the nice Christmas gifts they gave us. Thanks again.

Our next meeting will be held on the second Sunday in January — the 10th, 1960 and our Youth Club will hold their meeting too and they also will have election of officers. We would like to see all our youth come to this meeting and those that like to become members come to our meeting as we would like to have more of our youth in our Lodge.

?Arena 17 LODGE, 92, FORT WORTH The Ladies Circle of Lodge No. 92 brings the year 1959 to a close so let's look back and review the activities and projects we nave accomplished.

Our first meeting was held in January 19.59 with the election of officers. The main purpose of our circle is to be social and create fellowship among our fellowmen, visitation to all sick members of the circle and lodge members. A visit to all members in the hospital with a gift such as a ivy plant, always shows a smile of gratitude.

Each month, three hostesses served the coffee and refreshments.

A quilt was donated and the sisters all helped to quilt it and it was used for our money making project, with the money we will buy a new 50-star United States flag, to present to our ledge r t the celebration of our 50th Year Anniversary on Sept. 4, 1960.

Our treasurer mailed "Get Well cards to all sick members and "Sympathy" cards to bereaved families.

A polka number, accompanied by an accordion selection was presented by Sunshine Easley in behalf of the circle on the Father's Day Program. The circle took a vacation in the months of July and August due to hot weather and vacation time for families of circle members.

We want to express our thanks to the Circle of Czech Women in Dallas for the invitation to their Christmas luncheon. We are sorry that more of our sisters couldn't go, those that were there enjoyed the platters and platters of Kolaches, strudel, and turkey lunch, thanks again.

The Christmas meeting of our circa was enjoyed by all present, with the exchange of gifts and we voted to send $10 to our SPJST Rest Home.

Several quilts have been quilted this year for members of the circle.

Our most interesting activity we had was our "Crazy Hat" luncheon. *More were about 30 different styles of hats, such, as fruit, vegetables, real magnolia tree leaves, Christmas bells, birds, bees, "mad money -- toy ten dollar bills" a complete toy gas service station, coy figures quilting a quilt on top of a hat, and many more.

The winning hats were made of a flower garden complete with a spray of water from the apron pocket of Mrs. Margaret Becan, Mrs. Annie Langer made her hat from Hungarian peppers from her garden, Mrs. Inez Krivanek stole the show with a large straw hat with Pampa grass, net, clothes pins.

This occasion will be long remebered by everyone present. A turkey dinner,

LODGE VESEII NO. 14 A Voice From Good Ole WESLEY I have been asked to make a write up for the Vestnik since I became a member. So I must say that I enjoy being a nsember of the SPJST even though it is just a short while. And I also enjoy readin g the paper and especially the reports ft om various reporters and never met before but have known them for a long time.

I will not mention anyone by name at present, but am sure some will be surprised to see this writing in this paper as I was when I received the first copy.

My family and I have met a very nice couple through this organization, that I just decided I need more insurance.

So I joined in with the group. They are Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Ewell. They offered us their home to hold our annual meeting there which was on Decerob e l 12.

The ehairman Lynn thisel called the meeting to order. Johnnie Peters gave the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and Ed Vavra, secretary called the roll and read the minutes of the last meeting.

Thr old business was a discussion of sending flowers to cur sick members.

As we had two in the hospital lately.

They are Mrs. 'Rainey Ewell with a heart attack, rho i s one of our organizers, and "1 ine Ed Venra had a major operation Fla() lie secretary's wife.

The meeting was adjourned and refreshments and cold drinks and coffee were served. Many thanks to the Ewell family, everyone enjoyed the fellowship after the meeting.

It was voted to have the meeting once a month. And the first meet i ng of the year will be January 9 in the Kamas home.

Well I see that I am late with my write up for after finally getting time to read my Vestnik I sec that our secretary has already sent the report in. But after making my first write up I certainly will not throw it in the basket.

So will send it in anyway and let the Editor do so if he thinks that is where it belongs. I was very busy before the holidays that I just didn't get this sent off even though I had it written. Now can say that fe had a nice gathering as all our children were here for Christmas, and no one was sick besides a cold.

I want all you members to remember that the next meeting is held at my hcme on Jan. 9 and hope that everyone will be present. As it certainly works better with a lot or our members than just a few so let's have a large attendance. And I wish each and everyone a prosperous and Happy New Year.

My niece proinised us her 1959 Christmas message. This is her second letter and I hope you find it interesting.

Sincerely, Naomi Kostom The Word From Up the Canyon Bozeman, Montana Well — by now the mighty mountaineers have installed all the comforts of home in their hillside hermitage. The roof has been raised - - on one side — to allow for a large up stairs sleeping area consisting of a suite (three little private rooms and one joint play area) for the three little Blairs and a nester bedroom for Mama Blair and Papa Blair: The view across the canyon to the creek is exquisite, and this alternation also gives us the closets, supboards, and bookshelves we need. Further, our life has been simplified by the addition of shiny washday twins — a washer and dryer, it has been economized by the addition of a pint•size Volkswagon to the family stables and much, trout and Venison in the larder, and it has been made more pleasurable (if ;hat was possible) i by the acquisition of a lovely baby-grand piano — the one I played on when I was a little gill. All this and solitude, too!

The girls are growin" ,til flourishing in their woodsy isntatlou. Tresi is three now, and a grub.:7 littV comedienne with a piquant ce a-Mina tion of earthly mischief and waif-like wistfulness. I cay "grubby" because scrubbing and starching keep her spotless for about. two minutes. Like little "Piepen", Charles Shultz's priceless comic strip "Peanuts", Tresi is e duet magnet. She's very vocal and she adores bellowing out her own versions of soni/s as "Wyatt Bup, Wyatt rain!" or -Dis is my muddah, Dis is m y muddah -- I never travel wit--out my inuddah" — a wild swipe from Menot:ti's Amahl and . the Night Visitors. She kept the supermarket in stitches the other day with her carefree caroling: "T, said cia donkey, shaggy and brown, 'I tarried my muddab up hill and down, I tarried Tarolynka t o Let -ahem tow 's' —" while "Tarolynka" buried herself ii. fresh produce and pretended not to know her.

On the other hand. there is five-yearold Cambia, who goes about — not 110a nee on, but encased in — a rosy I vloud la eanvinced she is a puce dis sad everything in life is beautiful or She doesn't iget dirty: even. when playine in sand, mud or paints, she remains untouched by it all — clean

Wednesday, January 6, 1960 and serene. She'd love that phrase, for she rhymes whenever she can, saking for "some lunch to munch", etc. Speech in her presence must always be grammatical, and so she declares that the wise old owl says, "To whom, to whom, to whom" — — Our Vikki is eight, active, energetic, and very competent. Oh, she will be one of the "doers" of the world. Her restless little soul does not allow her contentment in inactivity. The piano is a source of joy and challenge to her, whether she's painstakingly learning to read music notation, or picking out by ear-and-one-finger the melodies of songs she hears, or improvising her vast "tone poems" for two hands. She's an avid reader; she's read almost all of the Americana Children's Series and she loves the poems of William Blake and Robert Frost, the Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde, and anything at all by that wonderful Dr. Seuss. And in her spare time she plans parties — elaborate affairs with decorations, competitive games, and giftwrapped prizes.

Now here I must mention Hank. He is not one of the girls, but the girls think he's a handsome prince under a wicked spell. I don't think so. I think he's the King of the Cats. As for Hank, he thinks he's a people. Actually he's a superb male Siamese cat who wandered up here from who knows where, adopted us a year ago in October, and has stayed .. . to the enrichment of the family and the detriment of the mouse population. His regal attitude led us to call him King Henry, but he would only answer to "Hank", so that he is. A most unusual Siamese is he . . . gentle with the children, usually preferring their company to ours, affectionate and faithful, and blessed with beautiful ananners. (He is also a Music critic, for when the girls get too enthusiastic on the piano, he hops on the keyboard, stretches himself out over keys, fingers, and all, and coolly dares them to play another note.)

Living in the woods teaches a person to keep his eyes open to the delights around him, such as clumps of white violets in shady spots around the creek — or a baby robin being taught to fly.

And so one becomes a deer-watcher, a moose-watcher, a bob-cat watcher, and yes — even a bird-watcher.

Summertime brought us the enjoyment of our many precious friends who came to visit us. By this time we were under construction and our visitors were all very good sports about sharing our sawdust quarters with us. (For a short time we didn't even have a roof over our heads, and in a mountain forest, that can be quaint). There was much fishing,

Vt STN1X— WEST, TEXAS boating, water-skiing, and relaxing. We even took a qaunt down to Utah for some warm desert air. And of course, we rocked and rolled a bit with that infamous earthquake. According to seismologists, we still are — every day. Occasionally we do feel a slight wiggle.

At the end of August, my mother and father came out from Palo Alto, California and• stayed with our girls while Dick and I went to Canada for our Company (College Life Insurance Co. cf America) convention. We spent a heaven ly week at the Chateau Lake Louise delighting in the British and French cuisine (herring for breakfast, french pastries for desert), the superb service and charming courtesy of the people, the truly spectacular scenery, and the happy reunion with our dear College Life friends from all over the country. Our most vivid memories include the kilted Scotsman who marched smartly around the grounds at sunset piping the colors down, and riding across the Columbia Icefields in a bright colored snow-mobile, with skis on the front and tractor treads on the back, over ice left from the last Ice Age and getting ready for the next.

In September we came back to home and to work. Dick swung back into his work with vigor and success, working in South Dakota and Billings, as well as here. And it's been worthwhile. This year he's becoming a member of the select Million Dollar Round Table — a most hapy achivement for one in the Life Insurance profession. It means he's sold a million dollar worth of insurance since last January. We are very very proud of him!

Summer was shoved out into the cold in the middle of September, and from then on, the only fall we had was snowfall. Then began the winter cycle of hauling wood and coal and hauling out ashes, digging out of one snowdrift and flopping into another. But it's also the season for fresh-baked bread, the hot soup — pot, sweet snow — cream, crystal cool air, and dreaming by the fire. 'This the season to be jolly . . . So let's!

YOUTH CLUB TEENAGERS OF LODGE NO. RS Houston, Texas Dear Members and Friends: The year 1959 is now behind us and is history to all of us. This year has provided our Youth Club with memories which none of us should forget. It was the year that our club was organized. We elected our officers who led us through, it with various activities. We held dances, raffles, and supported the lodge in all the ways that we could. We attended district meetings, lodge meetings. and annual meetings. We supported all of our lodge's dances. We participated in the various programs that our lodge and district presented, and we also participated in the barbecues that our lodge held. We were able to attend District III's Queen's Ball. This was a festive occasion and none of us will forget the wonderful trip that we had to and from Dallas and the exciting time that was shown to us while we were in Dallas for a few hours that Sunday.

The most exciting event we had the privilege of participating in was Lodge 88's Princess Ball. This was the first one for our lodge, but it is surely not the last. Here is a night in which I recall the suspense and the excitement which filled the air that night in September. I personally will hold this night in my treasure chest of beautiful memories close to my heart. I am pleased and proud that I was so fortunate in being a candidate for the title of Princess of Lodge 88. It is not always the winning of the title that counts so much but the other things you get out of it the new acquaintances that we make, the knowledge that we have done our best, and the feeling that we ourselves have helped our lodge in some small way.

These along with other things that cannot be put into words are more important than the actual winning of thq contest because you come out a winner in

the long run; and your turn will come later to be the winner if it is to be so.

Our Youth Club was also fortunate enough to have the most youth sponsors that anyone could possibly have. Our three sponsors are Maxine Sefcik, Della Kadlecek, and Estelle Kelly. These three sisters of our lodge helped so much that we cannot thank them enough. They have given so much of their time in helping us decorate for dances, obtaining different items for the success of our projects, and helping us to just pro-e mote our club. We can never thank them' enough for helping us get our club organized and on the road to success.

These three sisters should be the Princesses of our lodge for they are the cues who are constantly working and never giving up to keep "the show on the road." They give almost everything they have to offer, always doing somehing behind the scene which contributes to the success of the project but Vnhich to my disappointment some peop le do not realize they are doing. Our thanks go to these three sisters for all they have done for us, but words cannot say enough but you will always be deep in our hearts for everything you have done.

On December 20, our lodge had its annual Christmas program. It was under the direction of our three Youth leaders mentioned in the above paragraph, which is the reason it was so g ood. Some of the teenagers participated in this program also. Some of us organized a small "band." Robert Hilsher and Jimmy Kadlecek both played the clarinet, Larry Pflughaupt played the tiumpet, Jeannette Helcamp played the bells, and I played the piano. We played zeveral Christmas carols which were "0 Come All Ye Faithful," "Joy to the World," and "Silent Night." Robert Hilsher also sang "White Christanas' and I played "Polonaise in A Minor" at the piano. Brother Rudy Sefcik was the Master of ceremonies at this program but he was assisted by two of the teenagers, Jimmy Kadlecek and Larry Pflughaupt who did a terrific job of carrying on the program.

To end the year we are supposed to have a party in which we are all looking forward to. We all believe in ending the year with a wonderful time and therefore we are looking forward to the big New Year's Eve Dance being given by the lodge.

So it is that this year will be one long remembered by all of us for the good times that we have had. We wish to thank everyone who has come out and supported the Youth Club's activities and we, hope that you will again give us

Your letters have been very neat and without mistakes, I thank you — Fanny New Year! ) ° 4. # LODGE 84 — DALLAS Dear Brothers and Sisters, On December 29, 1959 the Mother Lodge of SPJST lodge 84 held a big dinner. This dinner was given for the entertainment committee and their families. Also attending this dinner were the other various caranittees of the Mother Lodge with their families.

Everyone truly enjoyed the delicious meal which consisted of barbecued chicken with all the trimmings.

After the dinner was completed the entertainment committee held a short meeting. In this meeting we discussed the up comming "New Year's Eve dance.

Final plans were made for this event.

After the meeting was adjourned evveryone then got together and prepared to decorate the hall for the New Year's Eve dance. This was no task at all. Everyone readily pitched in and helped and in no time at all we were finished.

I would personally like to thank everyone who helped prepare the delicious meal and also everyone who helped in the decorating of the hal/.

It was at this meeting that the lodge officers for the coming year of 1900 were elected. Much to our joy, the oficers will remain the same as they were this past year. Certainly, they have done a great job and with them as our leaders agin. I'm sure that Lodge 84 will make greater progress than ever before.

We are also very happy that our Youth Director will again be our "Mama Bessie" Petr. Mrs. Petr is the one great link in our teen-age club and without her we would be lost. We only hope that we will in no way make her sorry that she accepted to lead us for another year.

Her Assistant Directoi will again be Mrs. Carlene Ondrusek. We are happy for that, too, and we also hope that Ondrusek will have a happy year with us and I'm sure that we will have nice year with her as Mrs. Petr's assistant.

Later in the evening after everyone enjoyed a "quickie" supper, the annual Cnristmas program was held. Before the program actually started, the teen-agers cnened their Christmas presents for which they had drawn names in our last meeting. Everyone was very happy a ith what they received. A little while later, the program began with the teenage choir taking their places on the pl e Ionia which gave the effect of a golden-piped organ. This year's program was set to the theme of a little girl's dream on Christmas Eve. little Linda Petr was the little miss whose dreams carried her to Bethlehem, to Czechoslovakia, and here in America As the program progressed, the choir sang beautiful traditional Christmas carols and the famous `Little Drummer Boy". The teen-agers who had individual parts in the program. were: The Adarrek Sisters, Kenneth Brown, and Joe OndrUsek. Pat and Cathy played their accordians and, as usual, the au-

VESTNtK WEST, TEXAS dience was delighted with the playing of these two talented sisters. Joe. Ondrusek played the part of Linda's daddy, sang a solo entitled "Scarlet Ribbons". Kenneth Brown also had a solo and he sang the ever beautiful song, "I Believe". We really did not know that We had such gcod singers in our teen-age club. The program was complete with even a Czech choir, comprised of young girls. They sang the beautiful Czech favorites of "Narodil se Kristus Pan", "Nesem Vam Noviny", and "Ticha Noc". This year's program was not as long as the ones have been in the past, but it was very pretty and much nicer. I know that everyone enjoyed it and I'm sure that all of the participants were glad to be in it.

This brought the Christmas festivities to an end for a short time at lodge 84. The teen-age club still has a very busy schedule for the rest of the year, that is for what remains of 1959.

Your reporter, Trudy Brdecka • 4, e LODGE NO. 84 TEEN-AGE CLUB Dallas, Texas Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 84's Teen-Age Club was honored to have been asked a second time by the Sears and Roebnck Company to provide a portion of the entertainment for their annual Christmas program.

Last year at this time we were asked to dance the Beseda and to sing carols.

However„ this year, since there were others on the program, our teen club did not dance the Beseda, but the choir and a few of our teen-age members performed to the enjoyment of all.

The program was held on December 24, Christmas Eve, at the company warehouse auditorium. While we were there we were given a delicious dinner of tur-

Buena 91 key, ham, and all the trimmings.

The first number done by our teenagers was the inspiring hymn, "I Believe" sung by Kenneth Brown. Th3re followed numbers by various other people and then our SPJST teen-agers came back to the stage t o close the program. The choir began by singing the wellknown, '0 come All Ye Faithful" first in English and then in Latin "White Christmas" was sung and then Ronnie Henzen played a solo on his steel guitar. His numbers were "Sleep Walk" and "White Christmas", The choir again sang. This time the pace of music was changed to one of true Christrnasy joy as "Winter Wonderland" was sung. Then the lovely and talented A. damcik Sisters stepped out into the3 spotlight to perform on their accordiares.

As its closing number, the teen-age choir sang the age-old favorite, "Silent Night", both in Ehglish and in Czeca.

Following the program a teen combo Tommy Hudson and his Savoys, Provided music for a short dancing time.

Lodge 84's teens joined right in with the dancing and had a very good time.

We were greatly honored to have been asked once again to perform for this particular program. Mr. Frank Henze'', our devoted choir director, worked hard with us and I think he is the one who is chiefly responsible for our singin), at these various places. He and his young son, Aleen Wayne, enjoy singing. Little Allen sang a hamourous interpretation of "Rudolph, the silver-gunned cowboy." He is a 'cute little boy and to be as young as he is, he has a nice voice.

Of course, we cannot forget Mrs. Petr who has worked as hard with us She generally has to practice with, us in singing, but when it is time for us to perform, she leaves us strictly to Mr. Henzen. Her heart is really in her work and we hope that she will always be with us.

By now Christmas has passed and everyone is enjoying those lone awaited presents. I sincerely hope that each of you had a woderful Christmas and that you will ha:ve an equally happy New Year.

Preparations for the dance began

Strana 2.11 early Tuesday morning when Mrs. Petr, Mary Ellen Pekar, Nodya Rejcek, James Janousek, and myself came to the hall to decorate. We were later joined by Carole Nemec.

We did not go into a lot of expense for the decorations and we had to make out with what we already had available. However, the hall turned out lookirg like a dream. The foot of the stage was covered with fluffy white . angel hair with read Christmas bulbs set in here and there. A lovely little Christmas tree shining with green lights, stood on the center of the stage. The refreshment table was covered with a white table cloth and on each , side of the crystal punch bowl were two golden candelabras with red candles. Each table was covered with a white table cloth and in the center of each were a red candle and a sprig of green misletoe. The `bandstand" was decorated with green paper and had a back drop formed of red satin. Over the top of the satin was a billowy cloud of white angel hair. Tiny cherub faces were put onto the red satin. Surely you can see that the hail looked real nice and, with all the red and green around, it was really "Christmacy".

A combo known as Mario Dubaub and the Nite-Caps furnished the music for the dance.

All that attended had a very good time. James Janousek and his parents held a dinner, before the dance began, at their home. Their home was festively decorated with. shiny tinsel, small cantas, and the like. A lovely nativity scene was placed in front of their fireplace.

The teen-age club is grateful to the Janouseks for allowing the teen-agers to come to their home and to enjoy a very nice dinner in the midst of all our friends..

We were very pleased to have with us a few visitors from Lodge 66 in Waco.

Margie and Hattie Matus and Leo Rejcek came down to our formal. We hope that they will be able to come to many more of our activities.

We want also to thank the chaperones who were Mr. and Mrs. Petr, Mr. and Mrs. Ondrusek, Mr. and Mrs: Frank Henzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Sid Pokladnik.

We were invited to a formall dance given by the teenagers of SPJST Lodge No. 84. Before the dance, everyone met at James Janousek's 'home at about 6:30 p. m. to eat a buffet supper prepared by Mrs. Janousek. We really enjoyed the food, thank you so much.

Then after the teenagers finished their meal, we all left for the hall. There we danced to the music of the "Night Caps". They sounded very nice and I think my cousin, Richard Sykora, president of the teenagers in Dallas made the most of it. I don't think, I saw one dance that he wasn't out there. We really enjoyed watching him. As a matter of fact, we really enjoyed ourselves and hope all of the other teenagers didn't mind having us there. Thank you once again for inviting us. I am looking forward to seeing all of you on New Year's Eve as I am spending the eek with my sister that week. See you all there.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, December 28 from Triska Chapel from Mrs. Joe Pesek who passed away Christmas Day at the age of 54 The funeral services were followed by a requiem high mass at St. Philip's Catholic Church with the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Julius Petru officiating. Rosary was recited Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Sweet Home.

• • Valentine J. Janak, Sr. 90, long-time resident of Lavaca County, died at his home at St. Mary's on Christmas Day, December 25, at 10:20 a.m. Funeral services were held at the Kubena Funeral Home December 28th.

VEST Ni X — NEST, TEXAS A blow-out on an abandoned gas well being salvaged by Coastal Salvage Co. of Rosenberg cost a local man the loss of a leg while a crew was at work Tuesday morning. Adolph Slavinski, of Rosenberg had his left leg so badly shattered it was necessary to amputate it at Soutneast Baptist Hospital after he was rushed there.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Omer Davis, Rt. 5, Temple, have announced the engagement and 'approaching marriage of their daughter, Rose Marie, 108 E. Pyron, San Antonio, to Fred Floyd Bucanek, 340 W. Dickson, San Antonio. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Frank Bucanek also of San Antonio.

Wednesday, January 6, 1960 were held, from i,he Trisha Chapel Needville Friday morning followed by Requiem Mass at the St. Michael's Catholic Church with Rev. Gilbert Pekar ficiating. Mrs. Bohac was born in Czechoslovakia on November 10, 1888. In 1907 she came to America and settled in Granger where she married Ignac Bohac.

In 1918 they moved to the Fairchild Community where she resided at the time of her death following a heart attack.

• Granger -- Frank E. 1\ la tincts Sr., 64, who had been county commissioner of precinct 3 for the past 19 years, died early Monday Dec. 28 in a Taylor ho3pital.

He was born near Granger and lived in and near there all of his life. In 1920 he was elected fire chief and served for 10 years. He was also a member of the volunteer fire department for more than 40 years and once served as its presi dent. Other offices he held were that of mayor and city assessor and collector.

Martinets was a member of the Brethren Church and was president of the board of elders. He also belonged to the Lions Club and the SPJST Lodge.

Survivors are his wife, the former Lydia Cervenka, three sons, Dan F. Martinets of Dallas; Frank E Martinets Jr. and Darvin L. Martinets, both of Granger; four sisters, Mrs. Herroina Spacek of Gonzales; Mrs. Bertha Gillespie and Mrs. Henry Holubec, both of Taylor; Mrs. Arnold Wrba of Granger; five grand children. TWo sisters preceded him in death. th.

Three West boys were on TV Tuesday, December 29, on the Johnny Watkins noon program on KWTX-TV Waco.

The boys are William Nors, Eugene Dolezal, (FFA boys) and Johnny Krizan (4-H clum member). The boys are in the top five winners in the Texas Seed Breed ers Association sponsored corn produc tion contest. They were honored by the association along with the other top winners in the youth program, and the adult winners in the norther half of Texas.

The three boys were also the top three winers in the corn production contest sponsored by the West Kiwanis Club of West. The yields were Wm. Nors. 123 bushels; Eugene Mimi and Johnny Krizan tied with a yield of 99 bushels per acre.

Dove, quail and deer hunters report the best harvest in years. Duck and goose shooting was scattered, according to the director of law enforcement of the Game and Fish Commission.

Very often, however this recovery is aaong proeess and it usually places quite a burden on the rest of the family.

Rather than oho, advice for stroke victims to follow, I will pass on a few tips to their fatray.

Any person who has suffered a stroke, no matter how severe, must have the will to recover and the desire to be independent, or improvement will be ex-. tremely slow.

It is up to you, his family, to encourage him to show confidence in his improvement and to let him do things himself as much as possible Be prepared for some changes in his personality. Maybe he will be more irritable, more easily fro-Arated. He might not be able to keep his attention focus ed on any one thing for very long.

Perhaps he v ill laugh or cry without any apparent reason. It might seem that he doesn't particularly care about regaining ,his speech, if he has lost it.

Speech' training, incidentally, should be be g un as soon as possible.

Be careful not to frullate the patient with tasks that arc too difficult.

Don't expect too much from him.

It may take him a long time to shave brush his teeth or even to comb his hair. But if he can do it, let him, no matter how long it takes.

Be sure to praise him for each successful effort. And don't be come discouraged if he fails frequently. He'll make it eventually, with your help.

It is a great boost to his morale if he feels useful. So don't put him on the sidelines and expect him to occupy himself with radio or television.

Make him a part of the family activities, help him to keep in contact with the world as he knew it before his attack. Help him pursue old hobbies or develop new ones.

In short, help the patient to help hi self.
